What an unexpected positive experience.. this restaurant would hold its own anywhere in Jozi, upon arrival the chef himself came over to our table to welcome us, we ordered the full chicken and the vegetarian platter, the chicken was cooked to perfection, it could have done with a bit more lemon but now I am nit picking and at last a chicken that is worthy of the title "large". The vegetarian platter was one of the best ever had and we would return just for that....we will be back to work through the menu because its that good. Oh yes the chocolate brownie pudding was magnificent.......

Hands down the best restaurant in Norwood! The service is always fantastic, and the MEAT is to die for! Terrance (the owner, I think?) is a great host, and has made up some special platters for my boyfriend and I on a few occasions. This is a great place to have your birthday or other fun event! 10/10!

Fireside is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in the whole of Johannesburg! We get food from there at least once a week and it never disappoints! Terence is the most amazing chef and is always so generous and accommodating! I can't rave about it enough! Try it for yourself!

Awesome cooking by fire. The real deal. Great knowledge about African game meats. Springbok was incredible. Smokey, succulent. Squid gets charred on a skillet over the same wood fire. I'll be back every time.

One of our favorite spots - especially in winter when the fire makes for a a warm and cozy night out. I had the most yummy medium rare fillet on Friday evening. Well done Terence. The staff are also great and he service good.

I've wanted to go to this restaurant for a while, then we ended up at it twice in one week. What are the odds. We started with a Thursday night quick bite to eat, which I had bolognese which was stunning. Later ended up at fireside for their Sunday all you can eat lunch. Lamb on the spit, delicious salads paired with buttery Chardonnay. Very very good lamb, cooked to perfection. Service and ambience is great too. Worth the trip out.

Fireside has a homey feeling. I went on a coldish spring evening. I was attended to almost immediately and seated very close to a heater which is where I wanted to be hahahahaha.

I had the chicken salad with the Parmesan and it was scrumptious. The portion size was great too. I’m definitely going back.

I met friends at Fireside Bistro on Friday night and was so impressed with this restaurant and quality of the food. After looking at the menu I thought that it was a bit pricey, however, once I ordered I realized that the portion sizes are massive and definitely value for money. I ordered the chicken thigh kebab with half veggies and half salad. The kebab was massive with 6 tender juicy chicken thigh pieces, a whole blue cheese salad and vegetables. My friends had the deboned baby chicken, which was also incredibly tasty and a large portion size.

Our waitress was friendly and attentive and the ambience is very cool with the open flame fire. This is an a great place to visit in winter as it is warm and cozy.

I am definitely coming back to try the Sunday lamb on the spit.

I’ve been 3/4 times now so this review isn’t based on a single experience.

Fireside is on of my favorite restaurants in Johannesburg at the moment.

The food is excellent, you can’t go wrong with any meat dish. The marrow bone starter in particular is very good.

I find that it is good value for money considering the quality of the meals.

The setting is also great, with the open fire where the chef cooks and often meat hanging above the flame.

The service is also friendly and efficient.

A very good an original place. Great concept and very delicious and flavorsome food all cooked on a wood burning grill.

The smoke is an issue though and they should try to address that. Would go back again for sure. One of the best burgers I've ever seen (and eaten).

Long ago, in a previous lifetime there was an esteemed italian restaurant on louis botha called la rustica, in those days it was deemed the best authentic italian around.

Chef Terrance cut his teeth and honed his italian at la rustica and a few years ago opened up his own restaurant on grant avenue called fireside bistro, here he cooks every night but monday, behind an open flame for all to see. There's no hiding, you can watch a man do what he was born to do in the firelight.
Fireside is a steakhouse with Italian leanings and flair.
We visited again on friday night. Spur of the moment stuff and we got there around 8.
Here's the thing about eating in norwood, especially if you're seated streetside, you're bombarded by guys selling their wares, drunken carguards and the homeless... nothing like a bit of reality to make you appreciate what you have ey? Here's another thing, people still smoke in norwood, anmd they smoke on the "outside area"... if you're sensitive, sit inside. If you're not into reality sit inside.
We are greetet by melissa, she offers drinks, i say water, she says "ice n lemon?" I concur. Note, she did not push a bottle, good. I'm good. And you know what... she replaces it with a fresh one when its empty!! Fantastic. The service is generally very good,she knows the menu, and is just attentive enough without being annoying.

The menu is good, lots of options on there, partner goes for 2 starters, marrow bone and asparagus parmigiana. I go for a classic, calves liver and onion. The prices are mid to high end jhb. Mains from 150 to 200. Starters around 100.

The marrow bone is huge, and rich, with a caramelised onion accompaniment. Its not served with any acid, or capers, or anything that cuts the richness. It gets a bit hectic.
We barely touch the asparagus but it too has a pool of butter, its nice, its a well thought out dish.
My liver arrives a little overdone, just slightly. Served on a few polenta fingers. The sauce is delicious, sage and white wine, but its also a bit oily, when it cools its overbearingly oily.
I'm a bit sad. I want so much to rate this place highly, the mood,the service, the idea, the menu, the chef, all great, all top quality.
Complacent? Something. Why so oily? Why not liver pink? Why no capers or something with the marrow?
We have a piece of cake after, its great cake but its chilled, as in out of the fridge, the ganache is hard.
That sums it up, it could be great, but the details aren't being looked after.

I'll try it again. I really will. I hope it was just an off night.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our meals at the Fireside Bistro so much so that we've visited every month for the past three months! The food is incredible and all prepared on a fire. The steak is amazing and always perfectly prepared and my dad loves the lamb made on the spit. The chocolate cake is SO yummy 💖 The service is pretty average but it is a definite must try!

This restaurant lives up to it's name...you can literally sit next to the fires that gets your food cooked. Had the blue cheese salad as a starter, the dressing was tad bit much. The fillet steak baguette was brilliant, so was the chicken thigh kebab. Big portions. Parking might be an issue rather uber here on busier nights.

I heard some good things about Fireside and I figured it would be great to check out. I really like the setting because it's very intimate and I really like that in a restaurant. The food was also pretty awesome and they give massive portions which I found really cool. I just had a problem with the Halloumi starter, which was tasty yes, but I don't understand why I got actual jam with it. Like when you go to a restaurant you expect something that is made in the restaurant, especially when it comes to sauces and stuff. So I was disappointed in pretty much getting jam out of a can. But I will say that I had a great time and that I recommend it. Especially try the meat dishes. They are cooked to perfection.

Fireside Bistro on Grant Avenue in Norwood (Johannesburg) is one of those eateries where ambiance, service and food are always inviting and seldom disappoint. Rated one of the Top 50 restaurants in Joburg on Tripadvisor and the menu changes regularly to include seasonal produce. Most mains are prepared on the warmly welcoming open wood fire at the heart of the bistro. Diners clamour for the warmest tables in winter while pavement tables are packed with customers in summer, blending into the Bohemian vibe of Norwood.

Terrence, the head chef and owner, is always around chatting to customers adding a personal touch to this bistro experience.

Starters are portioned perfectly and if one was forced to make a recommendation, without a doubt the prawns would be my first choice.

Mains are bistro fare with Terrence’s personal twist of spices and sauces to enhance the flavour of each dish. The choices for meat are beef, lamb and venison. For me the 200g beef fillet is always cooked to absolute perfection and well priced. The trout is a popular choice for my pescatarian friend, while the oven roasted salmon and tuna are additional choices for non-meat eaters.

All mains are served with oven roasted veggies and potatoes or a side salad. Terrence's famous oxtail makes an appearance on the winter menu, and is not to be missed.

A small selection of tasty pastas and hamburgers are also on offer. By the look of other patrons enjoyment, these items can be recommended.

Fireside Bistro is open 12:00 till 22:00 and closed Mondays, and Tuesdays lunch.  It is advisable to book your table at 011 483 2060 / 076 469 9958.

Absolutely delicious food, I have no complaints in that department. My boyfriend even said he thinks it's the best fillet steak he's ever had in his life.

The reason that I give this place a lower review is because of the lack of ventilation in the restaurant! We were all sweating and fanning ourselves the whole meal, it made for a very unpleasant experience (even though we were sitting in the outside area)
In addition, the service was fairly average.

I will definitely be back and highly recommend but maybe in winter!

Every Sunday for the rest of your life, you should wake up, have some pronutro (coz breakfast is important obviously), maybe watch some PVR'd WWE and then go to Norwood for lunch.

Oh my lord.

Fireside Bistro have been doing this lamb on the spit thing for ages. And they will continue to do it because you will be going there to have it each Sunday.

As an aside, the mint jelly was the only mint jelly I ever enjoyed. Oh, and they do the lamb so well that the skin almost becomes like crackling. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

So

Next week, go here. Order the house pinotage (or be fancy and get a more expensive bottle), get the lamb on the spit, take some selfies with the lamb, and revel in the fact that you're living your best life.

Some REALLY good food at this place. I'd been debating going for a while but just kept putting it off for no specific reason. Tonight was the night and I was very impressed! We ordered the full deboned peri peri chicken. Perfectly cooked, full of flavour, succulent and mouth-wateringly delicious! The wine was perfect. The service was spot on! The music playing in the background was exactly to my taste. The lighting, decor, fire in the background. I have nothing negative to say about this spot and recommend everyone gives it a go :) The owner is also extremely friendly and I ended up chatting to him for a while. Great guy who is passionate about what he does! I sincerely hope that this review encourages others to visit because this place really is way above average and deserves more recognition :) 👍

A group of us decided to go for dinner , service was excellent and Terence (owner) very involved in the cooking, chicken very good , but the standout was the fillet , grilled to perfection , slightly crisp on outside , full of flavour and juicy. Done on the open wood flame grill. All in one of the top fillets

Went to the fireside for a quick family dinner and enjoyed it thoroughly! Had the ribs (yummy!!!) but the veggie platter that was also ordered looked (and tasted) superb... the helpings are enormous and would have shared just to get the chance to try a desert!

What an amazing above average street side bistro. Walking past one might give the place a miss but do your self a favour and stop.
Judging by what was served around the table it seems the game steaks were perfectly done and tasty.
If you love good ofal my I recommend the Calfs liver.... Which was way above average perfectly rare with a great seared finish.
Deserts were the only negative, soft profiteroles, and a bland chocolate peanut cheese cake.

Coffees were way above average and really tasty.

All in all way worth a stop

It's been months of "we should try that place with the fire" until we finally went for dinner tonight. I love the fire and the open plan of the restaurant. The service was good and the manager came by to ask if we need any help with the menu.

Other than salad there is two vegetarian options which isn't a lot but was enough to satisfy this picky vegetarian. I had the Panzerotti butternut which was pretty good- very flavourful with the hint of butternut rather than the sweetness of the butternut over powering the dish.

The menu isn't huge but there is a variety of different meats and meat dishes which gets prepared on the fire. The waitress told us that on Sunday's they have an all you can eat lamb spitbraai for R200.

This unique restaurant was such a treat last night. From the moment we entered, we were greeted by the friendliest faces. The place is very clean and exceptionally well managed. The waiters are super attentive and the manager could be seen in the background the whole evening.

Now the food...we had sirloin on the bone and the lamb cutlets with veggies and potatoes. The meat is of such a good quality and soo tasteful. The two sauces (mustard and mushroom) were freshly made and very tasteful. For dessert we had profiteroles...which was mind blowingly delicious!!!

Everything was delicious and topped my expectations. The fact that they prepare your food in front of you, makes you feel "included" in the preparations. I will most definitely be back very soon!!

Stopped by at the Fireside Bistro for lunch in a chilly afternoon and really appreciated the warm fire that had been lit! The menu isn't very big but there's enough variety to keep it interesting. I liked that they had quite a few fish dishes on offer. I ordered a baked kingklip with vegetables and my friend ordered a steak with mushroom sauce. My fish was cooked perfectly but the stars of the show were the vegetables which were perfectly roasted! Enjoyed them immensely. The mushroom sauce has an unusual flavour that was nevertheless delicious and I was a bit sad there wasn't more of it! The only downside is that the extraction of smoke in the Bistro is not the best and the smoke became a bit too much. My eyes were burning a bit and we had started coughing.. Definitely not a place to come if you've got asthma! Still, the food and atmosphere was lovely and I'd recommend this place.

I met a friend here for lunch a few weeks ago. There lamb on the spit looked amazing but we decided on steak instead. My steak was cooked to perfection and so was my friend's. I then chose to have a spoil and have the profiteroles which were really yummy. I would recommend coming here if you like your meat done right.

They are making a solid effort on the ambiance score with the fireside thing, but the space is quite large and feels somewhat cavernous. The food is great though...Steak, fish, the usual works, and they have a fab desert menu.

We took a father's day take away lunch today to have at home,we ordered steak,chicken,borewors,calamarie it came with veggies and Potatoes. It was amazing far better then having a braai. The food quality was beyond exceptional and service excellent.will come back and sit down soon

Excellent restuarant with a chilled atmosphere. Mussels starter was excellent, lamb chops main was outstanding. Wife had a haloumi salad , and loved it. Other good meals at the table were the beef ribs, and the seafood soup. Service was also good.

Visited Fireside Bistro for the first time tonight and were treated to a fireside table. Quite simply, these guys know how to braai meat. Both our cuts (T-bone & rump) were perfect. Desserts were fantastic (flourless orange & lavender cake & Ice cream). Service is quick, efficient and above all else, friendly.

A lovely, but very limited restaurant. Limited meals, limited drinks. The food we did order was fantastic. The oxtail was the best we've had, the chicken was great and the ribs were solid. The coffee was good too. The chips were terrible though, so go for the roasted veggies rather. The service and ambience was average. Overall, I'll probably be back.

I absolutely loved my first visit to Fireside Bistro. I had been wanting to try it for a while, and it was definitely worth it!

The service was friendly but professional, with very well-trained staff. What's great about this place is that you literally sit by the fireside, which I can imagine is lovely in winter. There are tables further away from the fire that don't get the much of the heat from the fire, for those who don't want it. All the food is cooked on the open flame right in front of you by skilled professionals, and the aromas are mouth-watering.

My black mushrooms starter cooked in garlic and red wine sauce was divine, and my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed his chicken livers starter. For mains I had the boneless half chicken in lemon and herb flavour, and it was honestly the best chicken I've ever had! My boyfriend had the T-bone steak and he said it was delicious.

The only downside I saw to this restaurant is the toilets, which you have to go through the kitchen to access. They're outside and there's only one male and one female toilet. It must be a pretty chilly walk there in the colder months.

All in all, I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants a more eloquent, yet not overly-exorbitant night out.

This is an establishment where every effort and expense is devoted to the preparation of outstanding food. In its workmanlike, unpretentious restaurant everything is centred around the wood fired grill and oven where all the cooking is done. The service is friendly and efficient , the food superlative. The fare is simple, the ingredients super fresh and the cooking brilliant.

We had been waiting patiently for the restuarant to open its doors again in 2016..and happened to choose to eat here on one of the hottest days in Jozi in years!

The main courses selected were fillet and grilled trout..both were sublime and we were using our fingers to lick the remnants of the meal off the plates. If my boarding school mistress had seen that we would have had a switch across our knuckles.

Feeling switch free and grown up we chose to share a dessert and that's when I fell in love..

Those profiteroles need a warning sign, "Beware of contents of plate. Known to cause sighs and sounds of Meg Ryan proportions"

Will definitely be back but probably in Winter so that we can sit by the fire as its name suggests..

I visited the Bistro for the first time on Tuesday night. It was bustling with people and smelt absolutely delicious as we walked in, which we soon saw was down to the sizzling a steaks and chickens being basted and cooked on the fire. I ordered the calamari and my Uncle ordered the T-bone steak. They were both delicious.

The choice of veggies could be a little better, and they could be a little less bland; but overall a great meal and a great vibe!

The supernatural ice cream was also divine, I tried the popcorn flavour recommended by our waitress.

Wonderful decor, friendly service and good food.

For starters my BF and I both ordered the Springbok Carpaccio, it was delicious and so wonderfully presented.
My BF ordered the half portion Deboned Chicken with the lemon basting. He had been wanting to try it for a while as he had heard from others how delicious it was and it didn't disappoint.
I wasn't so hungry so I had the starter Calamari Tentacles with a side Greek Salad it was all great and a very generous portion.
My favourite was the dessert. Something I haven't seen anywhere else and so delicious, it was the Profiteroles, 3 salted caramel and 3 chocolate covered balls filled with fresh cream. They are like miniture chocolate eclairs that I really do recommend you end your meal with.
We had a wonderful waitress called Nelly serving us which makes all the difference. The gum ball machine adds a very nice touch and is filled with all sorts of my favourite sweets and I'm sure everyone elses.

Sunday lunch is superb. Unique, small and intimate but the portions are incredible and it's a taste bud bender.
Lamb on the spit with roast veg and tatoes is superb in quantities to make your eyes water.

Fireside Bistro drew us in purely because it looked so cosy and vibey and I love a good wood fire on a cold winter evening. I thought it was a great touch that we could see the chefs at their work on the fire. We just had dessert but I can't wait to come back for a dinner. The profiteroles were the business.

I took family, including my British nephew, to Fireside Bistro and with a huge braai in the middle of the restaurant where most of the dishes are prepared, it made for a unique South African experience. My nephew tried the ostrich steak which he enjoyed. I had the lamb cutlets which were good, but a little fatty. The portion was massive with four sizable chops, as well as potatoes and veggies, so I would recommend going with an appetite. If that's not an option I can vouch that they made for a good lunch the next day.

This is such a different experience,like being at a proper south African braai except you're in a cozy sexy little restaurant. The food is superb, the chef is friendly and happily goes to have a good chat with the tables,our waiter Dumi was incredible... we thought it and brought it... Chef i don't know where you found this guy but hang on to him ! Starters, mains and dessert were all very good and can't wait to go back. 💪meat is power ! I don't know how much we paid cos the men do that at our table but there were no complaints and grumbles after the bill was taken care of so that's a pretty good sign. My man loved the food so much he cleaned out his own and everybody else's plates and YES...I was the one holding a doggy bag on the way out and the doggy will be me at lunch tomorrow.

We sometimes find it difficult to go out for dinner because we have a young baby at home... Fireside is our perfect solution: our take away orders are always beautifully prepared and scrumptious. Finally made it to Fireside Bistro! Chef Terence - previously at La Rustica and who subsequently furthered his training at Prue Leith - cooks only using wood burning fires, either on the braai or in pizza ovens, to prepare the most delicious meals! He certainly knows his way around sauces as both the mussel starter and our main, 200g fillet came accompanied by the most superb sauces. The fire warms up the restaurant making it the perfect place to spend a winter's evening. A bit pricey but worth it.

This is the new kid on the block in the area. All round everyone was extremely impressed. From the service to the quality of the food the evening was very enjoyable. Everything except for the deserts are prepared on an open flame or in the pizza oven. The only downside was the desert which in sure will improve with time. I will definitely be visiting this place in the near future.

A welcome addition to Norwood. In this cold weather the fire inside was fantastic. My rump was soft as butter and very tasty. The veg were delicious. My friend has a fillet with mushroom sauce which she was very happy with. Dessert was fantastic. I had my standard creme brûlée and it was served perfectly. My friend had the Malva pudding and next time that will be my choice too. It is a bit pricey though.

So thrilled that we discovered this amazing neighborhood bistro. An awesome team of staff here. Cooking done in an open fire with a dynamic chef who by his smile and general demeanor clearly adores what he does! Great quality food, but a dessert that was so awesomely presented and was so delicious, I was tempted to lick the plate!!! Can't wait for a return visit!

I really love Fireside Bistro. Sure it's not your conventional restaurant, but the atmosphere is great and the concept very unique. The food is delicious, it's like eating a meal in a braai masters house. Brings wood-cooked to a whole new level! They also make the best muscles and calamari I've tasted in a long time and the Sunday lamb on the spit is out of this world!! Really lekker spot and I highly recommend you give it a try...

I visited this restaurant on freedom day, which Zomato shows as closed. I was glad that the Sunday menu of lamb on the spirit was also available. I hose the boerewors starter and found it mediocre. The main course of 1/2 boneless chicken sounded delicious and I opted for it. It was definitely enjoyable. The waitress somehow absent and also management. Pity ad the assistant was extremely attentive. Would love to see how they survive the Gauteng winter as little consideration is given to the cold weather. Good luck to the team as they grow.

Been here 4 times already. Never disappointed. Steak beautifully grilled over a wood fire. Grilled Chicken excellent as well. Can't wait to try the Sunday lamb on the spit!

Great food. The chef knows what he is doing. Managed the old La Rustica and the kitchens at the Grillhouse. I am here the 4th time and not disappointed. Try deboned chicken and steak.

This place is really great in terms of the food and service. My only gripe is the occasional smoke from the fire pit right in the middle of the restaurant. That cool a lot of their meals on this fire. They have a good menu and the food is constantly good. Parking on the street can be a bit of an issue when it’s busy but it’s really worth the trouble. I would go back over and over again!

Honestly one of the best restaurants in Johannesburg. Food cooked on a beautiful open grill creating a tranquil ambiance and beautiful smell throughout the restaurant. The food is incredibly delicious and their selection is broad. Service is friendly and the manager is constantly ensuring your evening is perfect. I truly recommend the beef ribs and their fillet steak will be cooked to your absolute desire - very tricky to find a place that can consistently cook the perfect medium rare but this place nails it. 😎 and there chocolate Ferrero rocher cake... beyond incredible

This restaurant is spectacular!! We had dinner here after a wonderful day of touring and couldn't have been more impressed. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The best part however was the food! Meat/mains are prepared on at open grill at the center of the restaurant. It was fascinating to watch Chef Terrance work his magic. Our server Renée did a marvelous job at attending to our every need and making sure we felt completely welcome. You absolutely MUST make a visit here as frequently as you can!!!

A fun spot, having the fire is awesome and quite impressive. Food was good and very "real", cuts out the fanciness to leave a bare bones homely meal which is a nice change. My steak was a little more cooked than what I ordered but was still tasty, albeit quite salty. I would recommend a visit here as something different and something "real", but don't go with the highest of expectations and you should be pleasantly surprised.

Owner run with excellent service, Fireside Bistro is a real gem. The menu boasts a variety of meals, which is great when dining in a group, while also being a very romantic setting for a more intimate dining experience. The food was fresh, portions are huge. Highly recommended.

Lovely atmosphere and food was great. The fillet with mushroom such was definitely a hit. They also went out of their way to help us out, even specially helping us to organise some sparkling wine for our special occasion. Definitely would recommend.

Great steak, big portions, lovely service (thanks Carlton)... Only mark down is for smokiness from the charcoal BBQ, which is what made my sirloin on the bone taste so good... Loved the blue cheese dressing on the salad and roasted vegetables too. Loved the rose, pomegranate and Turkish delight ice cream

Nice warm cozy place to have dinner on a cold day. Best part is this is one of the few places where they DON'T put BBQ sauce on your steak! Love it. My meal, a T-Bone steak was prepared to perfection!
