Review So Yum - Johannesburg

Lulu
Solo date and wanted some Asian food. I enjoyed the service and atmosphere of the place. Not too packed, staff were friendly and accommodative. I will definitely be going there again. I love that they cater for vegans and vegetarians. Would be nice if their menu had some images especially for those trying something out for the first time.

The location of So Yum is nestled in the heart of the mall where you can just feel a buzz and gets you excited to enjoy it all. The waiters of the restaurant are extremely easy to get a hold of, and are very helpful and attentive to your table. The table and cutlery were clean too. The food quality is seriously amazing! There is a wide choice of Asian food, but of high quality. There is not one negative aspect about it at all. Everything came on time, and promptly. You could essentially taste every ingredient provided, everything was fresh! We also had cocktails here, which were mind blowing in flavor! This is worth your stop, and a return visit for sure!

The food at So Yum was so yummy! The entire experience added to the deliciousness of the food. One can tell that their ingredients are fresh and authentic. We enjoyed the Spicy Seafood Noodles and the Basil & Chilli Beef was to die for. The meal was rounded off with a baked lemony cheesecake accompanied by a scoop of ice cream. Service was swift and efficient, With a lovely atmosphere. I am definitely going back for more So Yum šŸ˜‹

The restaurant always has a good atmosphere. The staff is friendly. There are ladies who offer back massages for a fee at your table. But the most important part of this restaurant is the food. It has always been amazing and they have a great selection of dim sum to choose from.
Jurgita Stasiukaitytė
Great choice for an Asian food lover. We tried their sushi, spring rolls, noodle dishes, fish and duck mains, and curries, and they all were delicious and not too spicy for a Northern European palate. We had dinners over the weekend several times and the service & atmosphere were great!

It is evident that something special is going on here. In some dishes the combination of ingredients somehow deliver a level of taste that is orders of magnitude greater than the sum of their parts. From Dim Sum to mains, every dish was astounding. Whether it was a perfect execution of a well known classic, or a reinterpretation, they manage to strike the right balance and leave you wanting to try everything on the menu.

New location, new menu with a few of the old favorites. Just live this place and the service is amazing. I love the hot duck or beef basil, but the wonton soup is amazing as well. Sushi is good and their cocktail menu is really amazing.

Asian fusion food. I always have the same dish the Crispy Ginger Fish which is fish fillets, ginger, chilli and fish sauceā€¦with rice. They also offer noodles. I love this dish. The other dish is the Pla Chu Chee which is Crispy-fried fish fillet in coconut curry sauceā€¦.also with rice. Iā€™ve previously had dim sum as well. The restaurant tables are partly inside the restaurant and in the Hyde Park walk way. Itā€™s minimalist design suits the character of the restaurant.

I unfortunately did not take pictures of the sushi. It was so great as well! I highly recommend So Yum. Their service was great and the food was delicious šŸ‘ŒšŸ¾

The service was fantastic, but their sushi was really lacking. It was dry and bland and very disappointing for the price
Nthabi Phoofolo
The food and customer service is top notch. I had the fried Lamb and chicken dim sum. While my friend had the steamed spinach and feta dim sum, she also had the lamb & chicken with noodles. I also loved the decor and ambience of the restaurant.

Still one of my favourite restaurants. Visited again last night with the family. Boys had sushi - no complaints there. I had dim sum and the quality is really good with fantastic dipping sauces. My husband had the pad thai and some dim sum. It is probably on the pricey side but worth it.

Duck ramen with egg noodles in a clear broth. A light meal that is perfect to have on colder days as winter is approaching. The texture of the duck was good and the broth was not too salty. Thank you for a delicious lunch, So Yum šŸ˜Š

What a nice Asian restaurant. A bit pricey, but the food was good with flavours bursting in your mouth, seasoned perfectly and friendly service.

Had lunch with my daughter today at Hyde Park So Yum - food was no taste! The food very much for westerner who no nothing about Chinese food - but very expensiveĀ for what they produced! Never go back again!

Excellent since their collab with Hemeljhuis (my favourite spot for breakfast in Cape Town). Really fresh Asian cuisine, which is refreshing. Generally like doing a mixture of tapas: fried calamari, salmon roses, spring rolls - all tasty. They duck and bok choi main with honey sauce is also delish.

Discovered So Yum thanks to the entertainer app. Food and service was really delicious and friendly!
Catch of the day was Kingklip. I do feel that at R165 they should include the rice instead of asking customers to pay an additional R28...
Sushi was yummy.... Presentation and the waiter setting the teriyaki sauce alight was a first for me. At R185 for 8 rainbow rolls seriously hoping they use A grade fish....
Great for a date night!
Had a 15 min neck and back massage at R50 in between meals which was really nice!
Yummy!
Great dim sum, teas , crystal spring rolls, Hong Kong pears.... so much to eat so little space to fit everything. Best to go in a group so you can order to share and try the variety the Resturant offers.
Ktmdias
Really amazing menu with unforgettable Asian dishes! We found the Dim Sum menu variety and quality to be far better than other similar restaurants. The fish dishes like Pla Chu Chee in coconut sauce & Crispy Ginger fish were delectable, not to mention the tasty Duck Ramen soup. Highly recommended restaurant!!

The restaurant has a very neat look and good ambience. The waiter wasn't excellent. He didn't talk much. Didn't even say which Bao was which when he brought it to the table. The food was not as good as I would expect from the price tag. The 4 x 4 was probably one of the worst in Johannesburg. Unfortunately we will probably look elsewhere next time.

Now partnered with Hemelhjuis; a lovely spot for Sunday Brunch. Best choice: potatoes Rosti with poached eggs. Great cappuccino! Canā€™t wait to sample more from the menu.

I went to So Yum a few years ago and thought it decidedly average. Not much has changed. I had heard great things about the new menu and collaboration on the breakfast menu, but it doesnā€™t extend to their lunch menu.
My mushroom baos had a few slithers of the main ingredient and little filling. The bun was rubbery and the price was robbery.
My mushroom pot stickers, a signature dish, were watery and tasteless, with little seasoning save for a chili sauce that would strip paint. The mushrooms had not been cooked properly and, again, they were shy on filling.
My wifeā€™s pepper prawns had a good bite, but were dry.
The service was okay, the waiter seemed a little overwhelmed at times.
The Singha Beer was good, though. In all, R500 not well spent.

We loved it! Clean, great tasting food, quite an extensive and varied menu with dim sums a particular favourite. Service with a smile. Recommend it anytime.
Definitely not the place
To go if you a one person seater as they not keen to seat you. Most disappointing as I have frequented them in their old and new location

Had date night at So Yum tonight, love that they have phone charger space at the table. The service was great and the food even better, amazing quality for using the entertainer app. We love! And will be back šŸ˜

A definite improvement on their downstairs location and menu. We were excited to try the Hemelhuijs breakfast menu but were rather disappointed. My Rosti was very oily and my husbands pap was seriously overpriced for the TINY bowl he got. A while ago we went for dinner and had the noodle soups which were very good. We wanted to pay using the entertainer app but they said that the meals we ordered didnā€™t qualify. Considering there isnā€™t a specific section called ā€œmainsā€ they should specify on the app what qualifies and what doesnā€™t. This is the first restaurant on the app where this has happened.
Vinodhan Selvarajalu
Had another great dinner here, this time focusing on the ever-excellent dim sum menu. Both the lamb and chicken gyozas were mouth-wateringly good and the chicken and sweet potato croquettes were also a surprisingly delicious new addition to my regular rotation.
Meera
Went with a bunch of friends. We shared the dim sum, cashew chicken, vegetarian noodles and green curry. Was deliciously, perfectly spiced and tasty. Would definitely go back

This restaurant had moved location within the centre.Ā Definitely like the new location better.Ā I find all the dishes I had here quite acceptable.Ā My beef and chilli stir fry could have done with a little bit more colour on the beef and I struggled to taste the basil but all the vegetables were still nice and crunchy and the dish had good flavour. The waiter made very sure to mention to me that it was a HOT dish which it was indeed (nice).Ā Ā Loved the stir fried bok choi.Ā My husband had the steak with vegetables and he said it was delicious.Ā I tried the miso soup purely because I had heard about it so often, it was okay, it is definitely an acquired taste but it was by no means awful. Is it an ā€˜authenticā€™ Thai restaurant? By looking at the desserts I donā€™t think so but all and all I will be back to try other dishes. I also find the service to be good, the waiter seem to know the menu well.

Delicious, affordable dining experience. This would easily be my go-to for Asian cuisine. I loved the breakfast- both the traditional and eastern inspired. The teas are delicious and specially brewed in little pots & the juices are freshly squeezed and delicious! I really enjoyed the teriyaki salmon omelette and the potato rosti. Iā€™m excited to come back for more sushi and dim sum. The decor is sophisticated and minimal, with lovely tableware from hemelhuijs. Service was stellar too!
Taahira Kimmie
Visited this restaurant and we were really disappointed. The menu is pretty vast with some exciting offerings. We decided that we were gonna try all the dim sum, pot stickers and wantons, because thatā€™s what they said theyā€™re great at. It took 10 minutes for someone to come and welcome us and take our order (we ordered drinks and mains together) and he wasnā€™t the happiest fry in the box. We waited 20-25 minutes for two non alcoholic drinks to arrive. And then waited another 20-25 minutes for our food to arrive. What a let down. The potstickers were oily and the filling in the spicy lamb was over salted. The spicy chicken was so oily I stopped eating. The only redeeming food item of food was the duck wantons, had they been warm and not cold the restaurant score would have gone up. The food and service is so average for the amount of money youā€™re paying.

For the best dim sum and noodles in Joburg (I fully stand by this) visit Good Luck Club in Illovo or Yamato also in Illovo. Money well spent and a happy belly.

Loving the new location in Hyde park. A great move. Vincent was our waitron tonight and was helpful, keen to give advice and an overall pleasure!

Still one of our favourites.

So Yum is the perfect name for this place!

The food is spectacular! I had the chicken cashew with fried rice and prawn. The sauce that they use to cook the chicken was to delicious that I am salivating as I write this! The fried rice with prawns was amazing and the portion sizes were very good.

For dessert I had the Thai silk (chocolate mousse), which was good but very sweet. It's very thick, more like a ganache than a mousse.

To drink I had the Dragon pearl tea.. It was not that great. It tasted like jasmine tea but with a sharper taste similar to rocket...

This place is great, but they do take a bit long to bring the meals. So it's a great place for a good talkative date.

They have set portions for dessert, so you might not get a specific dessert if the portions are sold out.

The service was great, staff was friendly and accommodating.

4/5 will definitely be going back :)
Michael Baretta
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. A little disappointed with the food however. Sauces were delicious but I think the fish could have been fresher...
FatCake101
To start off with, the restaurant is very fancy. I love the whole setting to it. The waiter was friendly too, and the food was served quickly. But I am not too satisfied with the food, as we specified to exclude onion in the bao especially, but they had still included it. The bao pastry used to be very fluffy and soft, the quality has changed when I went back yesterday. I donā€™t think I will be back again.

The change of position, taking over the old Life / Stephanieā€™s spot has revitalised So Yum. The atmosphere is a lot better now that it is in the mainstream area of the centre. The food has always been good but with the new vibe it just seems better! Very good wine menu and great coffee. Importantly the staff are knowledgeable and attentive.

Disappointing first experience. Waiter brought us the wrong dish and when questioned he made it seem like we requested that dish. Customer service very poor. Definitely won't be back.

Really disgusted by So Yum Hyde Park! This was one of my favourite Thai restaurants in Johannesburg, but now I will never eat there again. My boyfriend and I ordered take aways from Uber Eats this evening - Bangkok noodles and Beef Udon Noodles. When I plated my food (after eating a bit already) I found what I think is a cockroach in my meal!!! This is unacceptable from a restaurant that claims to be high end (any restaurant for that matter). Absolutely disgusting, I only wonder what else I must have ingested from all the other times I ate from or at So Yum!!! I will never recommend or visit this restaurant again!! #PoorHygeine
Ashveer Deepnarrain
So Yum turned out to be not so yum after all. I had the chicken and cashew nut stir fry which was extremely salty and lacked a general helping of veggies to tone the dish. A buddy of mine ordered the spicy seafood food which could not be digested - the look of floating seafood pieces in a very watery soup which was not well stirred in with the spices was not very appreciated. I thought I would enjoy the meal by the look of the stir fry but itā€™s by far one of the worst Thai dishes I have had.
Andrew Tyndale-Biscoe
Itā€™s name is just perfect, it is exactly that! I ordered ā€œbang bang duckā€ and stir fried veggies....they were already being served as i took my second sip of Ken Forrester Sav Blanc. Great meal, great friendly service...fair price...will definitely be back!

Decided to do this place in Hyde park two weeks ago, place seems to be quiet but who knows we only went there for lunch.. We ordered their lamb gyoza and veg spring rolls.. Really loved their gyoza flavourful and the chilli dip was on another level the heat though, my sister was literally crying but she could not stop digging into them.. For mains we decided to share a beef noodle bowl and their pork steamed bun.. It was a great disappointment the buns were too sweet and the meat inside was not there I jus got two tiny pieces of pork the size of my nail plate... The bowl was jus ok nothing much to say.. Service was great the waiters worked effortlessly to keep us happy.. Thanks to Keith even if he brought my wine 20 mins late....

Food:
Delicious with great portion sizes in terms of mains. Fresh quality ingredients spiced and cooked perfectly. Taste is true to its Asian style and vibe with great quality tea options which is a similar style to the tea served in tea houses.
Would recommend a visit.
Can work out slightly pricey but considering ingredients I find it reasonable.
Staff and service:
Excellent and attentive
Ambiance:
Sophisticated Asian, great for dates or catch up with friends
I like that they have non alcoholic cocktails which are priced reasonably compared to just ordering a regular virgin cocktail which is priced the same as the alcoholic counterpart
Recommendations:
Pad Thai noodles
Non alcoholic ginger mojito

Delicious food! The most amazing dim sum and stir fryā€™s! Service was great! The was even a vibe on a Wednesday night. Will definitely return soon!

Sushi was exorbitantly overpriced and not worth it at all. Terrible sushi and spicey salmon handroll was vile. Lacked creativity in their sushi menu. Will never go there again.

The place looks and feels gorgeous..the service was great too our waiter was so helpful..we had the dim sum which were good..haloumi spring rolls were delish.. for mains we had the king fish in honey and soy with fried rice which was good too..i loved the mohitjo..

Had an excellent meal here recently. The Duck Ramen Noodle Soup was exceptionally delicious! Filled with flavour and a perfect portion. The steamed duck buns and sushi is also fabulous. My companions for the evening loved their Sizzling Beef! Our service was top notch and everything was ordered perfect and came in good time. We were also offered massages for R50 at our table :) I cannot wait to return, I forgot how much I love this place!!!

Helpful waiters, great service, nice decor & delicious food. Started with some dim sum & fish as the main. The Hong Kong pear dim sum was something different to try...Fatima Kamrudin Mamod

We've been here a couple of times and always enjoyed the food and the ambience inside the restaurant. However our meal last night was a bit disappointing.
First of all we were seated in the mall which felt like a food court. The restaurant ambience definitely does not translate to the outside tables. The chicken spring roll was dry, thank goodness for the dipping sauce! The veg spring rolls were much better. The pork steamed buns and salmon gau were great but I was unable to differentiate between the 3 dipping sauces. The waiter did not explain what they were. The sizzling beef was very nice.
Unfortunately our waiter was wearing a very heavy musky cologne or deodorant which was quite overpowering and not conducive to stimulating the appetite, rather the reverse. We left as soon as we were able.

Tried this place last night, wasn't very impressed... Firstly the service from the waiter was really good, very friendly too, so we'll done on that! Ordered the dim sum for starters, the spinach and cream cheese lacked cream cheese and the prawn was pretty bland... Also tiny for the price. Main course we ordered the duck red curry and the lamb shank... The duck wasn't that good at all, had a weird taste but the curry was great, my company got sick sometime after our dinner... The lamb shank was good very tender only small, which I suppose is justified by the price but also wasn't served with anything as aside, tried the veggies which were good, but for the price wasn't too impressed either.... Oh I tried the lemongrass, ginger and cinnamon tea which was really good. Sadly I didn't enjoy my experience much here...

Love it. Food was exactly what I was craving. The chicken noodle soup for the table is really good. Great value for money. Very cool vibe. Book before hand

I love So Yum, so it's always a treat to order it on UberEATS when I'm in Joburg for work. My favourite is the Bangkok Veggies. It's actually listed in the sides, but it's a substantial portion of fresh, crunchy veggies, tofu and cashews. The flavour is a perfect balance of spicy, sweet and savory. I usually order it with a side of steamed rice, but it's a meal in itself. I also recommend the summer rolls. So yum!
Janine Howard
Great fusion food and really good service! The dim sum (especially the prawn tomatoes) is fantastic and I would definitely recommend the chicken cashew!
Bhavsha Sudesh Badul
Food:4
Service: 4
Ambiance: 5

Lives up to its name... everything is always so yum... very difficult to get a booking so make so to book in advance... however you are never turned away
Simeon Kyriakides
Just ordered in... Thai green curry was great - only reason it's not a 1 rating. Sushi on the other hand is completely overpriced and "soggy" even the ginger that came with the sushi was "soggy". That spicy salmon thing was terrible - it felt as though I was munching down on sand! Would rather spend my money elsewhere!
Rakhil Sewpersadh
Great Sushi. One of the best on my list. Main course on the other hand wasn't good. The chicken and duck had a stale and couchy taste. The overall taste of the bang bang duck was good and I really think if the duck was fresh I would of enjoyed it.
Joan Collett
Never had a bad meal here!!!
Also have the best neck and massage from the massage lady
Good friendly, quick serve.
Dum sum and spinach wraps always a favorite.
My boyfriend and I had a lovely late Sunday lunch at So Yum. He was graving Ramen and surprisingly very few places serve Ramen in Joburg. We decided to give So Yum a shot.

My boyfriend had the pork Ramen which he thoroughly enjoyed and I also had a taste and was surprised by how flavorsome the broth was. I had the green curry with prawns and egg fried rice. My meal was delicious and I would highly recommend it.

The restaurant was rather quiet so I'm not sure what service is like when the restaurant is busy but we experienced good service.

So Yum is definitely worth a visit for some great food.
Unathi
So Yum in Hyde Park has always been one of my favorite restaurants for fusion food. I love having the dim sum for starters. Almost all the mains are great, and this time around was no exception. Great cocktails too. I will be back next time.
Ilyaas A. Mayet
I really love coming here despite it being in a mall. The staff are attentive and the food comes quickly and is presented well. I've had the chicken basil, chicken cashew, beef basil, sizzling beef and Peking duck. All bar the duck are favourites. The dishes are well spiced and have enough sauce to add to noodles or rice. The duck is nice but just a bit dry. The wontons are generally quite good and the chicken satay is moist with a good peanut sauce. I wouldn't recommend the beef satay as it doesn't have the same kick. Even when ordering through UberEats, the food arrives hot and is still tasty. It's family friendly and well priced.
Elodie Bonnefon
Excellent! Food always perfect, very good service, nice ambience! I really love this place and I'm coming very often for years. Special thanks to the manager, very attentive and his staff.
Wesley Hattingh
One of my absolute favourite spots in Joburg, they most definitely have the best Dim sum in town! The Pad Thai is also a must have, it is so incredibly flavoursome.
Ramani
Their noodles weren't so yummy and had little to no flavour. The speciality and flowery teas were lovely though. It is a pretty little restaurant in Hyde Park but the meals weren't what we expected.
Lauras World
So Yum is a Hyde Park restaurant that has adapted the yum cha concept serving dim sum daily. Yum cha in Cantonese Chinese literally means "drink tea" and refers to the entire dim sum meal. Dim sum is also one of my favorite meal types to eat and I was excited last night to finally eat here.Ā

Situated on the Lower level of the Hyde Park, it is hard not to feel like you are sitting in a shopping centre so I would avoid sitting where us girls were seated last night 'outside' in the mall walkway. The ambiance is probably a lot better inside the actual restaurant away from the noisy shoppers and passers by.

So Yum is a part of the Thai African Restaurant Group which comprises of Kong (Cedar Square), Orient (Melrose Arch) and Wangthai (Sandton). For those of you that don't know, dim sum is originally a Chinese dish of small steamed (or fried) savoury dumplings containing various fillings.

This restaurant focuses particularly on signature dim sum (such as steamed buns, puff parcels, money bags, Sui mai, Gao, Gyoza and Hong Kong Pears) as well as curries, soups, noodles and of course a comprehensive sushi offering.Ā
The dim sum will set you back roughly between R50 - R70 per portion.

On the food side we chose to share:
Spinach and cream cheese Gao (portion of 4)
Hong Kong pears (portion of 3 potato dumplings stuffed with duck,Ā chicken and prawn).Ā
Beef Basil Chilli stir fry
Vegetable Green Thai Curry
Chocolate sesame balls (deep fried chocolate filling dumplings coated with sesame seeds and served with vanilla ice cream).Ā

The best courses for me: Gao and Hong Kong pears. This restaurant is definitely all about the dim sum.
Worst course for me: Chocolate sesame balls that were far too thick and impossible to break open to eat with my spoon. Once I had managed to get some of it onto my spoon, I then found the dough texture incredibly chewy. Not a great course for me.Ā

*Recommendation: Opt to sit inside the restaurant (as opposed to outside in the shopping centre if you can) and try a mixed dim sum selection with friends for a different (and interactive) Asian night out.

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

I first went to So Yum with a friend for Sushi and cocktails on a Sunday afternoon. we sat in the bar area in a corner so we could munch and catch up and it was the best decision we made in a choice of location. The service was great. Sushi reasonable, great quality and and worth every penny.

We had the traditional green chicken curry and seafood noodles. I generally find most mixed seafood dishes are a rip off in most restaurants but this was definitely not The case. They are on an entertainer app as well which is great but even if you don't have the app...still a great place to eat and relax.

I have a particularly strong penchant for any style of Oriental cuisine and I especially enjoy dim sum. So Yum has a really great variety of delicious bite size morsels. My favourite are the char siu bao (white fluffy buns filled with delicious barbecue pork)
On my last trip I had one dim sum starter and the duck ramen for main which had a delicious and flavourful broth.
The only downside to this restaurant is the steep prices, expect to pay a significant sum if you choose to have several dim sum. Although this is to be expected in the Hyde Park area.
The Foodie
True to its name thai food at So Yum never disappoints ! From the sushi to the chicken skewers/chicken satai .. the starters were well prepared & tasty ! For the mains my spouse opted for the Phad Thai which was beautifully spiced ! Prawns šŸ¤ & tofu with noodles and egg combined to give delightful flavours ! My main, the basil chilli chicken was outstanding & highly recommended ! On the whole a vibey atmosphere with good service. If you crave good Thai food So Yum is a must when visiting Hyde Park Corner !

I've been to So Yum a couple of times and I've always loved their food. It was a Friday and I had been wishing for sushi for over a week. I had a look at their menu and ordered my sushi via UberEATS.

I decided to order the 8-piece prawn California rolls and the 2-piece salmon roses. It took about half an hour for my food to arrive and the best thing was that I didn't even have to leave the office. The sushi was fresh and so delicious. They even sent me my sushi mayo in a separate plastic container as well as the extra soy sauce I had requested.

So Yum has got to be one of my favourite Asian restaurants in Joburg. I'd also recommend their dim sum and Thai green curry, which I've had in the past. I will definitely be back.

Omnomnomm
Have only tried the Thai veg green curry but can confirm that it is indeed SO YUM! Fresh, crispy, great variety of vegetables (Red: red peppers, crushed dried red chilli flakes; White: cauliflower, cabbage; green: broccoli, green beans, bok choy, Green peppers, patty pans; Yellow: baby corn, patty pans; Orange: carrots; Purple: red cabbage); enough curry of a consistent texture; the hot is proper spicy hot...lacking good protein (mushrooms, tofu/soy, cashew nuts) but otherwise no complaints! Will definitely try the other veg options.
Nana Serwah
I was underwhelmed. Decor was nice and menu was broad, but the food was disappointing.

The pork buns were very sweet (too sweet?), and while the meat inside was delicious, the ratio of bun/meat was off. I ended up with a plate of leftover bun by the time I was done.

I also had the ginger fried rice and prawn spring rolls. Both bland, and the prawn in the spring rolls didn't taste very fresh.

Wouldn't recommend it.
Leverne Mountany
The shopping centre setting is not doing it any favours but So Yum has maintained a decent following . With dim sum - try the hong kong pairs , sushi an good cocktails. A good selection of cocktails on the menu.
Rhys Hodkinson
Paid a large sum of money and got a tiny portion of dry cashew chicken with no side and slow service. Very disappointed and won't eat here again.
Mak
How do you run out of basic ingredients like spinach? No visible management presence either. Disappointing considering this place has been around for such a long time and linked with Wangthai where exceptional service is the norm...
Philani Manqoba Mzila
First time trying out the restaurant. The food was amazing. I would really recommend the prawn dim sum. The salmon sashimi was super fresh. The service was also really good

The food @ So Yum is "So Yum" I was pleasantly surprised today when we popped in for dinner with my friend . The service is great and efficient food came out fast and fresh .
We had Prawn Dim Sums and sashimi for starters
For mains we. Bang bang duck ; Red duck curry .
The Red Duck curry was amazingšŸ‘ŒšŸ»šŸ‘ŒšŸ»šŸ™ŒšŸ¾šŸ™ŒšŸ¾
definitely would come back for more ...
Loved the garlic rice šŸ‘ŒšŸ»
Very pleasant dinning experience.
Authentic Asian spot !!!
SamuelandJacinta Pather
All time favorite. Service is quick and friendly. Dim sum is authentic. Prawn toast and pad thai are great. Peking is fantastic although you do need to order more pancakes. For casual dining sit outside. For a more cosy and romantic meal request an inside table. Cocktail menus is delicious. Pricey but good value.
My sister and I are dim sum freaks and have always gone to Koi to get our dim sum fix. I came upon So Yum on the internet and after reading the fab reviews I immediately made a booking. We finally had dinner there on Tuesday night and what a gem of a restaurant! We went a little overboard and ordered wontons, moneybags, gau, hong kong pears and steamed buns and then threw in some rainbow rolls when we ordered seconds....hee hee! It was a dim sum feast! The gau pastry is slightly too thick but other than that I would recommend So Yum to anyone that will listen. We are definitely going back to try the rest of the menu as well. Well worth a try guys!
Lionel The Little Fox
My friend loves the duck noodle and the seafood salad. And the people who see my trending photo of the duck noodle all want to know the location where it is.
LorinB
Wow! Delicious. I love this type of food and have limited access to good quality Asian cuisine where I live so this trip to Hyde Park was absolutely worth it. We had some Dim Sum to start- perfectly cooked, not too oily and then I had the Pepper Prawns as a main- it was full of flavour and a generous portion. If you want to spoil yourself with really good food- this is the place.
Sharima Bramannan
I've been a huge fan of So Yum for a couple of years now. They make my favourite green Thai curry...I have it with prawns and rice; they do have a vegetarian & chicken variety too. It contains the typical veggies...patty pans, pepper, etc and i like it flavoured hot....such good aromatic flavours. I had the fish cakes to start...it's served with a sweet chili and peanut sauce and is just divine.
Nicci šŸŒŸ
Always have loved this place and realised iv never reviewed it. Went for dinner tonight and ordered dim sum steamed buns rice wraps sushi and hong Kong pears well it was outstanding as always. Incredible service love the vibe and the sushi is really good. We come back mainly because of the best dim sums in jhb.
Jill Nudelman
If you want a quick meal before your movie, maybe tell them and they'll hurry up. The place was busy; was this the reason the waiter with the menus didn't appear for quite some time? Although the food landed on the table in a flash. Had the stir-fry veges and chicken basil with medium chili and I felt the burn. Food was pretty average and no one came around to ask how we were doing. R125 for corkage felt a bit excessive. Will I be back? Not in a rush. I should have rather cooked the semi-frozen chicken defrosting in my sink.

Stopped by for lunch, service was very good and quick. Everything was nicely set out and clean. Decides to have a phad thai, first impressions was very good, plated well, cooked well with fresh Ingredients. Nice touch of peanut powder and sauces that comes with the dish, like the chili flakes and fish sauce. Only thing that I didn't like was that I could taste the sweet and sour sauce in the dish. It's not supposed to have sweet and sour sauce, and that ruined it for me.

Otherwise great service and food cooked well.

So Yum, the name of this restaurant could be used to describe the Dim Sum. It's amazing! I love the bar selection, intimate and cozy with just a few tables in it. Sadly the space and the experience was let down by exceptionally noisy bar and wait staff. Some of the tables are ridiculously narrow and space in general is very restricted in the main part of the restaurant, especially at the larger four seat tables along the sides. The Beef Basil was truly delicious but I do think that it should come with noodles. It is quite a hot dish but it was delicious! The Duck Breast was really good too, I'm not the biggest fan of Duck but it was tasty. I loved the Bok Choy in it. I'll definitely go back for some more Dim Sum and hope that the bar section isn't filled with as much noise as it was.

Really not worth what you're paying for. Food was a bit bland, and lacked the key Asian flavors that you would expect. The sauces that came with the dumplings were also flavourless, not the best I've ever had. Prawn toAst was okay, same goes for the haloumi rolls. Dishes could've done with some freshness on the side. Fast service though

Even though set in a mall, the decor draws you in to the mysterious, elusive basement floor. Kind of dark, the luminous decor, however, transports you elsewhere. The vegetarian sushi and spring rolls are delectable. And the steamed buns. Omg. There steamed buns. How yum? So Yum!

Asian fusion restaurant offering a selection of spring rolls, dim sum, sushi and curries. The location is not ideal but it's worth a visit - even if it's just for their spicy duck triangles and fish cakes.

Such delicious Asian cuisine, and such a great atmosphere. The waiters were also so on point.

The spinach and cream cheese dim sum, nom nom nom! Also, the money bags. Really was such a great experience! Definitely going back soon to try some other treats that I saw others chowing.

The name says it all

Sometimes you can wait a while for your food but often the massage makes up for that

I suggest the pears and sushi but honestly everything on their menu is amazing

We had a regular dinner accompanied by slow service. The steamed buns where rigid, tasteless and lacking a decent amount of filling. The crispy spring rolls were pale and not flavorful; the halloumi cheese rolls were hardly cooked, hence the cheese was hard inside. The beef noodles were nice, it was the only dish we enjoyed. For desert we had the balls filled with chocolate... You could only taste the sesame seeds on the outside because the chocolate is too runny and watery inside so it does not have any flavour. Overall a disappointing experience, together with an uninterested waiter. We won't be returning any time soon.

Absolutely love so yum. I always have the lamb dim sum to start as well as the tempura prawn California rolls (although this is not on the menu). The staff are always friendly and the food is usually quick. I do not like that it is in a mall - so often choose to sit inside. However, overall good experience! I would recommend it

Really enjoyed the food at this restaurant both when sitting in as a patron and at an event in the centre which the restaurant catered for, nice ambiance

The food at So Yum is literally "so yum". The dumplings are absolutely divine. The chicken cashew nut with rice is another favourite of mine. A friend of mine had this chocolate dessert and although extremely rich- very tasty. Also the service is always good. At So Yum, one can expect consistent food and quality service.

Really enjoyed this unassuming place. The fusion of oriental flavours are really good. Tried a bit of everything from hong kong pairs, dim sum, gyoza, siu mai, gau & wonton. Ā A sushi platter was shared and then the mains were pad thai Ā & chicken with glass noodles. Had no space for dessert but they used to present some dessert with dry ice for that culinary impressive presentation but apparently they no longer do this anymore. Had a flowering tea which was great for show as you pour the hot water into the teapot, the tea seed starts to bloom. This consists of a bundle of dried tea leaves wrapped around one or more dried flowers. These are made by binding tea leaves and flowers together into a bulb and are then set to dry. Another great wow effect for guests that are not au fait with this particular tea. Great place. Dont expect the traditional restaurant setup as its literally in the mall and most tables are in the main walkway so expect general thoroughfare. Thumbs up for the food! :)

I've been to So Yum before, yonks ago, and had a decent - though pricey - experience, so figured I'd invite some friends to join me on the night of the ill-fated Harry Potter Midnight Party. They weren't taking bookings when I called, although that seemed to be because they didn't know what the situation would be in terms of clientele (in my book, if you're not sure how many tables will be occupied, surely it makes sense to take a booking then?).

The restaurant is stylish but cozy, and the waiter was friendly and attentive. The cocktails are inventive - I had a cherry chilli mojito, which was delicious - and the teas are enticing (my friend had the orange rooibos, which was beautifully presented in a glass teapot with two glass tumblers, and smelled delicious).Ā

I'm so pleased that there's a restaurant that not only serves dim sum, but specifies which ones are rice paper and which are wheat. Since I'm allergic to wheat, I don't often get to experience dim sum, especially not fried goodness. I had the Crispy Moneybags (chicken and celery) and chicken spring rolls, both of which were absolutely scrumptious; though at R60 each for 4 small pieces, very much on the pricey side. My friends ordered a variety of other dim sum, which they raved about, and a portion of salmon california rolls to share - fresh and delicious.Ā

There was a bit of a mix-up when one of the delivery waiters gave my friend my chicken Pad Thai and me her prawn Pad Thai - which would have been a problem as I'm allergic to prawns - but fortunately that was sorted out before I took a bite. The portion was huge, and all four of us ended up eating only half our mains, but that was okay, as we took takeaways that were just as delicious the next morning.Ā

The bill was a bit of a shocker - R350 for me alone, for 2 starters, a main, and 1 cocktail - so I won't be eating here all that often. Still, it's definitely on my list of restaurants with great food and good service, so I will be back.

Delicious food! The wonton soup is surprisingly good, and great for a cold winters night and the Hong Kong pears are one of my favourites. The texture of the sushi rice is a little bit different, not like the normal sushi rice...Nevertheless, it was still a great meal!

Delicious Thai food. Love love love the Hong Kong pairs i crave them often and try to go have dinner here. The spinach thing where you add nuts and roll it yourself is also one of my favorites. Only problem is the main courses don't match up to starters wish they had more options that involved...

What a disappointing meal. We had a table of 6 to celebrate a Birthday and school achievements. The waiters brought the wrong food. The meals were mediocre and service very slow. There wasn't a manager on duty that we could call. šŸ˜” We had been to this restaurant a few times previously and thought we would return as a treat. Would not recommend.
Wonderful! Variant, healthy menu & a wide range of teas.

I was amazed at the great service & quick meal preparation. You truly get your money's worth here.

I loved the twist of color both inside and outside this outlet, plus our waitress was very respectful & prompt.

A new favorite!

Good food! The pork buns were great. According to my husband exactly the same taste as in China just not as aesthetically appealing. The Hong Kong pairs were decent just a little too sour. We shared a basil chilli chicks with noodles. By far the best I have tasted in a while. Also love the cocktails and teas here. Decor in the restrictions itself is way too dark for my taste this included lighting. So we chose to sit outside in the walkway. Which is casual and light as long as you don't mind the shoppers walking past constantly. Service is on the ball ... Mostly!

Had a good evening great tasting good however for a cold winter night food temp was not ideal one dish cold had to send back to warm up. Will try them again maybe an off night for the waiter

Saturday nights are just perfect in this restaurant. The mall is nice and quite, plenty of parking. For a Thai restaurant, it's not the cheapest. The food is very good. The service is not that bad either. I would always come back here. Another gem in the city.

So Yum definitely lives up to its name. Delicious Dim Sum and cocktails, plus great service and the food is brought to the table so quickly! Definitely try the beef noodles & the prawn dim sum - so yummy! Really enjoyed it!

Friday night sushi after a long time. This popped up on my list.

The service was excellent and attentive. Seemed all our needs so attended to and even though the place was full they managed to seat us in a reasonable time.

The drinks also arrived in a timely manner and the correct levels of alcohol in the cocktails and a nice wide range of selection on the menu.

The sushi was just delicious, same goes for the dumplings. The options of sides was a delight.

Will return.

What a bad location for a resturant...
You always feel like you are eating in a train station. But still go. The modern dimsum is great especially if you pair it with cocktails.
Bit still if you are looking for a nice chilled night it's worth the stop

We were supposed to have our Restaurant Week lunch at So Yum at Hyde Park today - we were so underwhelmed by the menu we decided to rather order from their actual menu. The Restaurant Week special lunch menu consisted of chicken skewers followed by a fish dish. I wasn't impressed and decided to rather order their dim sum. I find it a bit disappointing that they didn't have an option for each course, even just two each would have been sufficient.

That being said, their dim sum wasn't bad. It arrived quickly. The duck fried wonton was the best, followed by the money bags (filled with chicken). The pork honey bbq filled bun was ok, I have had better.

I ordered some garlic rice for takeaway to have at home later because I had read somewhere it was soooo good. It really isn't. I tried it when I got home and they must have forgotten the garlic.

Overall it wasn't a bad experience, but I wouldn't go back for the dim sum. I do want to give their mains and sushi a try though, what was coming out of the kitchen looked good. Service was fine.

Very interesting tea... The food was super flavorsome and the servings were generous! Affordable and a definite winner in flavor vs price! They have many unique teas and even cocktails... Really really enjoyed it! ;)
