Review Tortellino D'oro - Johannesburg

Jane “JaneyPaney” Schultz
Nice upmarket deli turned eatery. Good atmosphere. Late night service a bit slow and lacking on basics like serviettes and a clean table cloth. The kitchen closes at 9pm, get your order in on time. The main meals have tiny portions, and you might leave hungry. The desserts more than make up for it with MASSIVE (almost excessive) portions. Expensive place!! 5 people ordering only coffee and dessert - expect a bill of over R1000. Good quality food. The ONE toilet is not great, but at least it is clean. We will save up and return for a full dinner. 😊

All round amazing experience, the store manages to be a restaurant, deli, and sell homeware without coming across as overwhelming. The pasta was fresh, the mussels were perfect and the ice cream was delicious. The decor was traditional and not pretentious with fresh roses on every table. Very attentive staff too.

Lovely Italian Restaurant. Booked a business dinner for 8. Received good service and the food was good. Sadly the ice cream was a disappointment

My wife and I eat at this restaurant occasionally and have always enjoyed their exceptional cuisine.

I love homemade authentic pasta, and this place was amazing… plenty of veg and kiddy friendly options. Great portions , and delectable deserts

Our favourite restaurant in JHB. Alec is such a great waiter and the food as always was incredible! We went there for our anniversary celebration and they really went the extra mile!

Everything always goes right here. We luckily live close to the TdO but I would say even a trip from elsewhere is fully justified to enjoy this wonderful venue. Shown are the delicious Millefoglia and Cassata

Brilliant Italian cuisine. Exceptional service.

Very unusual, but interesting set up. It is a restaurant and a supermarket. One can buy groceries over the counter. We had the most delicious orange sorbet, with an olive, whilst we awaited a table; in the packed to capacity restaurant. I had the most delicious salmon starter. My main course was a pasta dish with chicken in a cream/mushroom sauce. My pasta was underwhelming. It tasted under cooked. They were a bit stingy with the sauce. I had to request more, which came expeditiously, in a bowl. My companion, opted for fish. It was delicious kingklip, served with mouth watering roasted veg. Their expresso has the most tantalizing and aromatic flavour. I had two. The ambience in the restaurant was delightful. The waitstaff are exceedling attentive, friendly and courteous. All in all I would give Tortellino d'Oro an 8/10; despite my less than appetizing pasta.

Fantastic Southern Italian dishes, with a calm atmosphere, and attentive, timely service. Would recommend the pasta, and desserts.

Divine food new favorite

Had a great time at the restaurant searved by Oswell he had a very warm and welcoming smile offered us welcome wine and he helped us choose a very delicious pasta i have ever tasted the restaurant was very beautiful and the air conditioning made us stay longer than expected will be back soon

Excellent pasta and very good service, a bit on the pricey side for Johannesburg though. <br/><br/>The tortellini in broth is divine. <br/><br/>Definitely worth it for an occasion.
Jack
Quite overpriced for what you get - only had one experience there so maybe it was an off night, but the portions were very small and the food was very okay.
Radha Chhita-Nathoo
Just good homely Italian food! Really good vegetarian selection. Great wine selection. Fresh food. Service is slow. But food makes up for it.
Ryan Klette
disappointed with the service and management. Ordered a croissant with scrambled eggs and rocket and was charged  R130. Expected a breakfast like this to cost max R90. Admittedly, our mistake was not to check cost of replacing toast with croissant. Will say coffee was excellent and sure food on the whole is good but leaves bad taste in mouth when owner appears to be very unreasonable.

Best melanzane and best pistachio gelato in Jozi, hands down 👌🏼. <br/>Staff are friendly and the venue is pleasant.<br/>A sophisticated wine list to boot! What more could anyone ask for ?

Tortellini D'Oro is a wonderful, Italian restaurant. The owners run the place with so much warmth and love, it shows in their food. <br/><br/>We save our visits to Tortellini for special occassions and we've thoroughly enjoyed every visit so far. <br/><br/>Service could be better but their food more than makes up for it. They use great quality ingredients (which shows in the price) and their food is tastier for it. <br/><br/>Do make a booking before going - they tend to quite busy especially on the weekend.

Great service! <br/>Authentic and homemade Italian pasta! <br/>Gnocchi, cannelloni and angel hair salmon pasta is out of this world. <br/>Dessert is good too- ice cream in an ice bowl! <br/><br/>Make sure to make a reservation- they’re always busy
Foodiart
Always enjoyed Tortellino D’Oro and was so pleased when we decided to dine there again, but tonight something was amiss. The atmosphere was cold and felt soulless. From making the reservation, welcome at the door to the service at our table was cold. <br/>Food was good. Hope our next visit will be better.
Linguini
We visited Tortellino D’Oro for lunch on a Saturday. We had the beef lasagna, the kingklip, and the veal involtini. Both the kingklip and the lasagna were tasty and well prepared. However the veal was tough and flavourless. Portions are ok, but when the flavours are not extraordinary and you are paying R300+ for a main course, you kind of feel that you are overpaying. Service was ok - the waiter didn’t clear the dining setup for the 2 empty seats at our table until we received our mains, and he wouldn’t top up our drinks either. For a restaurant that is empty, I don’t find these things acceptable. The owner was walking around the store bossing everyone around, but not interacting with, or greeting the customers - something I find strange. I think the menu is nice, and they use good quality ingredients but there needs to be more attention to detail with the service. Food wise it was ok, we might be returning... but not in a rush.

This is a real gem. We both had their Kingklip which is superb!! 2nd time we have had it and it was just as good both times. We had booked a table which was in their covered verandah, which had heaters, but it was still chilly. Without us asking they moved us inside as they could see that we were cold. <br/><br/>The waiters are excellent and the place works like clockwork. The portion size is too big though and we always end up taking a doggy bag. I would rather pay less and have a manageable size. <br/><br/>The ambiance is great and the place has a lovely vibe

Amazing Resturant. Food is brilliant and the service is excellent. You have to phone in and make a booking because they are extremely busy. Definitely worth the money.

Was there for Dinner on 3 Aug 2018.<br/>Great ambiance.<br/>Ok ish service (waited too long for drinks).<br/>Nice winelist but very pricy wine.<br/>Best Tiramisu I’ve had- light and fluffy.<br/>Great deli.<br/>Complaints are:<br/>1. very pricy starters (although large portions but maybe too large for a starter)<br/>2. we were a table of 10 sitting at a table for about 6 right in front of the stairs going to the 1 st floor. I had to sit right on the corner with legs on both sides of the corner leg of the table taking the space of my neighbor on the head of the table. This spoiled it for us. If you do not have the space rather state that you are fully booked.<br/>I would go back but not for Dinner. I think lunch would be better as it would hopefully not be so crowded and squeezed in.

Lovely friendly ambience. Service is good and staff are friendly. It is quite pricey but the food is very decent. Starters were interesting. Pasta was incredible. Cost R450 for a starter, a main and then some wine. Definitely will be going back.

If you are looking for an authentic Italian meal in what strongly comes across as a family business then this is your place. The Melanzane is an absolute must! Service on the whole is excellent however we didn’t feel completely welcome with a baby 😳
Chloe Watson
Food is incredible! You can taste the quality in every bite! Portion sizes are perfect and satisfying! <br/>But service is lacking terribly - on more than one occasion, you have to asked to be served
Sue Hardie
Tortellini D’Oro is without doubt my favourite restaurant in Johannesburg. The service and food are always faultless. The food freshly prepared with the finest quality ingredients. It has an authentic Italian ambience, only the fact that it is a bit of a dive for me, keeps me from being a more frequent visitor.
Joshuakadish
Overpriced food, incompetent waiters and clueless owner. Realized why it has been nicknamed “Tort-a-lesson”. Expect long delays for food for tables of more than one person

Professional service, delicious food, and lovely little surprises! I've been trying to get a reservation at this quaint Italian restaurant for ages, and finally tried my luck with a walk in. Having just come back from Rome, it was such a delight having Italian food that matched up to the Roman standard! Plump tortellini in a cream and mushroom sauce, ravioli and fresh pressed orange juice made this outing a culinary delight. we also loved the old school touches of complimentary Prosecco on arrival, and a bread basket with fresh butter, olive tapenade and artichoke dip 😍😍😍

I have eaten at MOST italian places in JHB. often left feeling unsatisfied or that a pasta was not wroth the calories HOWEVER - What a GEM! My family and I had the seafood pasta and the clam pasta. This was by far one of the best pasta's we've eaten. The seafood pasta was packed to the brim with yummy seafood. The owner was very sweet and suggested that we dont order tagliatelle with the seafood dish.  The pride she puts in her pasta , you can taste. This is my new favourite italian restaurant which i HIGHLY recommend,
Lebogang Molwantoa
Italian home style restaurant that specialises in home made pasta and Italian dishes. I had high expectations but personally feel its overrated.<br/><br/>Firstly the owner barely acknowledged us or greet us during our entire meal. She berated the waiters in full view of the customers for what I thought was a minor human error. The service was also average at best. <br/><br/>The good - the pasta was fresh, good portions size and price is not too bad. The starter (bruschetta) was also really good. I had the chicken tortelli with a butter and sage sauce. Pretty much saved this from being a horrible restaurant review. . <br/><br/>

Very Disappointing!!!<br/><br/>Rude Manager, Rude Waiter, Poor Quality of Food & Over Priced!<br/><br/>Booked at table for 20h00 had to wait 45 minutes to get my table.<br/><br/>When asking the manager what the delay was, told me take it or leave it!<br/><br/>Table was filthy and cutlery from previous people were left on table.<br/><br/>Waiter was clueless about the menu!<br/><br/>Cold Food, tiny portions & over priced!<br/><br/>Won't eat hear again!!

This place is a hidden gem. The quality of food is exceptional. Real Italian food made with love. It feels like you are having dinner at your Italian family’s house. <br/>Great wine list too

Delicious authentic Italian food. Service was good and food was awesome. we had the cream and mushroom tortellini, delicious and the tiramisu was one of the best I’ve ever had and I’ve tried a lot of tiramisu around the world, italy included. Will be back

Love love love this little gem! Absolutely excellent food! The best melanzane in Johannesburg in my opinion! They also have a lovely deli with delicious freshly made options.

Tortellini D’Oro<br/>What a little gem, friendly reception and pristine aura when you arrive<br/>Attentive waiters, knowledgeable and on the spot<br/>Proseco was quite nice welcome<br/>Enjoyed main courses<br/>Cassata incredible, must have<br/>Al together a great evening<br/>Worth a visit

Authentically Italian restaurant with the most divine pistachio milkshake! <br/>My hubby had been raving about this restaurant for months as he visited it a few times for business lunches / dinners. <br/><br/>Food was really good just very rich. <br/>My favourite was the porcini mushroom starter with ciabatta. Delish! The sparkling wine and zucchini fries a special touch which also leads to very high expectations. Our waiter Alex was friendly, helpful and on point with his meal recommendations. The owner was friendly and helpful and paid attention to detail to what we offer<br/>We were a party of 6 and everything we ordered was well made and delicious. <br/>The tables are a bit small and the restaurant is very popular hence a bit noisy. <br/>The deli with authentic Italian food is absolutely stunning - pricey but quality products. I will be back probably for lunch. <br/><br/>Point to note: <br/>The service from the elderly hostess (silver bob) is a bit rude. She is not friendly and frankly shouldn’t be in the hospitality industry. My rating of 3.5 is mainly due to her attitude (almost uncomfortably rude with no smile on her face). Her aura was so negative that it almost dampened what was supposed to be a special evening. <br/><br/><br/>
Bulbul Shrivastava
Usually quite busy but welcoming and hospitable. Authentic Italian food. It is a bit difficult to find space should you decide to walk in. Also located in a busy area so parking is hard to find but it is safe. It is a bit loud so sometimes you’re shouting over other people. Great place for breakfast, brunch and lunch.

It’s my second time eating here but maybe I’m just ordering the wrong thing. I do love the atmosphere in the restaurant and that you get a glass of champagne to start but my veal was so bland and previously my pasta too. 🙈 it could be my tastebuds because my boyfriend is obsessed with their carpaccio. So I can maybe recommend that. <br/>I’ll be back though to try another dish.
ZedVee
The rudest owner under the sun! She is purely the reason I will never return to Tortellino and she treats her staff like dirt! I have been going to this restaurant for years but the food is getting progressively more expensive and the owner progressively ruder! Her mother and father were such wonderful souls. Such a pity the restaurant has been left for her to run and possibly ruin with her bad attitude! Also the waitress placing the flavor tags on toothpicks for the ice creams stuck the wrong tag in the wrong ice cream, pulled it out, licked the ice cream off the toothpick and placed the tag in another ice cream! Gross!! Will definitely never return!
Chiara Louis
My classic go-to. Can always rely on torts to deliver delicious, authentic Italian dishes and intimate and unpretentious atmosphere. Embarrassingly here once a week and highly rate the melanzane, asparagus and broccoli pasta, and the cassata for dessert!

Came here with my fellow colleagues and it was great. I like where it is situated and the deco looks wonderful. There were 5 of us and we had all sorts of food to try out. My highlight was the bread that came with different butters. And most delicious was dipping my bread into the balsamic and olive oil mixtures with a pinch of salt. Wow! If you don’t watch out you will end up being full by just eating that. Everyone was happy with their mains. The sorbet was served in an ice bowl or something, now that was really cool. Im definitely making a second and third stop.<br/>Sorry forgot to take photos!!

What a fabulous experience! If you like a true Italian vibe with homemade pasta this is the place for you! Yes, we did find it a bit expensive, but it was well worth (but we couldn’t afford it too regularly). The pasta was incredible and melted in your mouth. But the deserts deserve a special mention... homemade tiramisu to die for and the meringue with berries was the best I’ve had! Delicious!
Harsha
The was amazing and the service excellent! We had various pasta dishes and all were incredibly light and delicately flavored. The venue is elegant and you feel well taken care of. The desserts were out of this world!

From the minute we arrived and were warmly greeted ,till the moment we left and were wished a safe journey home... it was a 5 star experience!<br/>Everything was delicious! I mean, really delicious!<br/>Treat yourself.

Try the clams... the food is sooo delicious.... space is limited but it's overlooked cos the food is just so good... <br/>A real Italian taste brought to S.A....

We decided to try this place after much hype from our friends. We were greeted with a glass each of champagne and expectations were high. For starters we had the beef carpaccio and tomato on bruschetta. For the price we paid, the dishes were average and certainly not much to rave about. We were disappointed but more hopeful for our mains. We ordered a spinach cannelloni in a Napoletana sauce and Mushroom ravioli in butter and sage sauce. The sauce on the cannelloni was refreshing and well balanced. However the ravioli was drowning in butter with not much sage flavour and was rather bland. The service also wasn't great. Apart from taking our orders and telling us what the specials were, I had to ask four times for a glass of water. We won't be visiting again unfortunately and we both felt the food was overpriced and that the restaurant under-delivered. Definitely rated too high on Zomato
Adam Victor
Not at all impressed! Specially phoned through during the day to confirm that it would be ok to bring a bottle of whisky for dinner. Was told that it wasn't a problem and told the corkage price. <br/>On arrival we are told that we are not allowed to open out bottles in the restaurant. <br/>Either train your staff or own your mistake!

Really enjoyed the food. Authentic Italian. Tried the Butternut Ravioli with butter sage sauce and my sister tried the Spinach panzerotti with Papalina sauce, both were really delicious. The setting is intimate and modern. Definitely a great choice for dinner.

What a treat! Food was delicious and the service was great! Pricey but definitely worth it 🍷 we received a complimentary Prosecco on arrival and later in the evening we were spoilt with a complimentary glass of Limoncello. We were well taken care of - never an empty wine glass on the table - the highlight of my evening was definitely the food! For starters we were treated to complimentary fried zuchinni, fresh bread and olive tapenades. We ordered the Caprese salad and the Pear and blue cheese salad - both were fresh and delicious. With such a big variety of pastas we all had a different pasta - I ordered off the special menu. The most amazing butternut and ricotta ravioli with almond, butter and sage sauce! I was in heaven with every bite! Thank you Tortellino for making our evening one to remember! I will definitely be back
Rachel Lowick
Expensive but worth every cent! The best ice cream in South Africa is served here. The chocolate is especially good. The Italian food is always exceptional and the drinks are just as good.
Stacey Murcell
Great service, great decor and setup and outstanding food!! Especially loved that we got a few tasters as we sat down to whet our appetite - with homemade spreads which we ended up buying.Absolutely loved it and will definitely be back :)
Charlene Langeveldt Middleton
Decor - very warm and homely. Staff - friendly / fast and obliging. Starter - was ok, Mains - divine really loved the variety on the menu and thoroughly enjoyed the meal ordered. The rest of the table agreed that the mains was great. Dessert - being a sweet tooth, this was a let down for me as they did not have the chocolate mousse cake i was so looking forward to! Overall would definitely go back as well as to refer to friends and family

Food was absolutely incredible, unbelievably decadent but service was really bad. I had to ask for the bill thrice and order my desert twice. All in all was just bad service but great food.

We had been wanting to go here for some time and it's a cute restaurant on the corner. Pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff who know their food and beverages, however I am the seafood main let me down to a great extent, it was extremely fishy and if you know what I mean, not in a good way. Dessert was not pleasant either. Unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations especially from other reviews that I have read. The price is a little stiff for what you are presented with.
Jean
My children took me there for my birthday. It wS so special with great attention to detail and the occasion. Champagne glasses were filled on the table. We were welcomed like old friends although it was our first time there on a recommendation of a friend. Our starters were so tasty, main courses all exceptional and this was followed by delicious desserts. What an evening to remember
Natasha Lutz
We were taken out for my sisters birthday to this hidden gem. Wow from the minute we stepped into this restaurant we were amazed. Although it was a rain filled night the place was packed, the waiters were amazing without being intrusive and we received champagne on arrival. Our large table were all impressed with our dishes ranging from asaparugus lasagne to porcini tortalini and chicken and veal dishes. We also shared two salads for the table. The owner came a few times for a chat and we felt so at home and will be going back very soon.
Jessica
Lovely setting, and good service. The complimentary drink upon arrival was delicious. The complimentary breads and dips were also delicious. I ordered the gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce and I was pleasantly suprised at how yummy it was. Not everyone gets it right so that was a treat. My only critique would be that your restaurant is crazy expensive
Andres Perez
Hands down on the tortellini, was by far the best I've ever had it was just perfectly cooked, the texture of the tortellini was perfect, the shop has everything you will expect from an Italian restaurant, the owner is on top of her game doing regular checks on meals, waitresses are polite and well trained, wi-fi is offered, very good capuccinos, overall a real Italian experience.
Love.Life.Daley
Cool little spot attached to a store/deli which stays open into the evening, selling local and imported goods.. It's a feast for one's eyes as there is so much to buy - fresh cakes, bread, pre-made meals, pastas etc etc.. <br/><br/>We enjoyed the food and all the little thoughtful extras (complimentary prosecco, battered zucchini fries as well as olive and artichoke tapenade with fresh bread).. <br/><br/>The wine is pricey despite a good selection and the food is above average too. <br/><br/>Definitely good for a spoil though and we enjoyed our evening together!
Johan M
Went to Tortellino a few times in the past but were never really impressed. Food is very average. Ambiance below average.  Last time I was there I felt totally ripped off. <br/><br/>A friend and I met for a glass of wine there and not really hungry for a main meal and selected a few snacks from the deli counter. Thus not specially prepared food. Three thinnish (4mm) slices of cheese came to R90. Three table spoons of olives and tomato slices the size of one tomato was charged at R159. Little bit of cold meat charged separately. Thus the few snacks as we were not hungry came to R300. (Excluding the wine of course.)  And you only get the bill afterwards.<br/>For around the same price we could have eaten a wow meal at the nr1 independent restaurant in Johannesburg, with a great ambiance and had a Seafood platter with prawns, langoustines, calamari, mussels, linefish etc, etc. But as I say we were not hungry.<br/>I will not be back soon.
Jill Nudelman
I come here so often it feels like home from home. Love the attention to detail; the fresh roses on the table; the Italian pastry or profiteroles and some sparkling water when you order coffee; at night - the Spumante that arrives along with the batter-fried zucchini (yum!) and the bread with artichoke paste and olive tapenade. <br/>Come for supper and maybe you'll spot an illustrious son or daughter of Jo'burg, a high flying politician or captain of industry - like we did last night but not telling who... Had the linguine marinara. Was so delicious and I was so full but I couldn't stop eating! Service is impeccable and Mrs Bollini comes around to make sure her guests are happy. <br/>Corkage was R85 for a lovely Warwick Trilogy 2009.

Went with a group of friends on a Wednesday evening, the place was packed. We had booked weeks in advance and I understand why. Delishious fried marrow crisps on the table to nibble at while ordering. Yummy bread with olive and artichoke tapanada while we waited for our food. I ordered veal lemon, it was a huge portion, with veg and roast potatoes. Was so delicious, others ordered grilled chicken breast, and melanzane, a outstanding authentic Italian meals. Will definitely be going back for more.

This Italian restaurant & deli has been around forever. The space is loaded with imported products and ingredients. Classic White table cloths and a neutral color palette make for a sophisticated dining atmosphere. The food has always been lovely here. Homemade pasta, fresh fish and excellent sorbet are among some of the menus highlights. <br/>Run by the same family since it's inception, you can't go wrong at this restaurant.
Claire Frost
Great food and service. I like that the owner is hands on. Starter asparagus was lovely. Such a disappointment that the burnt sage sauce was NOT burnt (x3 dishes in our party which was a shame) - they really need to address this.<br/>Lovely ice cream!

I came here for breakfast after reading the other good reviews. Firstly, the little Italian deli they have on the premises is absolutely worth a visit, they have some awesome things! The service was pretty good but a little tense. The omelette was yummy but maybe the eggs were a bit overcooked. I wanted a strong coffee, so like a couple cappuccino or something and the lady said she can do it, but I ended up being charged R45 for a single espresso + cappuccino which doesn't normally happen when you order a double cappuccino, so worked out a bit pricey and had I known, I would have just had a filter coffee. It did come with a cute custard pasty though :) Overall I think I need to go back for a pasta to truly judge this place.

Norwood is such a gem the hidden restaurants are so unassuming but the food is amazing! <br/>We went to Tortellino during the day for a late lunch! The ambiance is great and service is good, the restaurant is also a little shop with Italian goodies! <br/><br/>Food: <br/>I had the Tortellini which had Parma ham, chicken, mushroom and a cream sauce. WOW WOW WOW! That was a definite 5/5 I couldn't stop eating. <br/>My man had line fish with veggies but my meal was the winner. I wish they had more pasta variety for us who aren't familiar with traditional Italian dishes.
Healthy Heart
I had the chicken salad which was delicious! It comes with some roasted vegetables, lots of chicken and some avo. Their olive bread is definitely one of the best I've ever had.<br/>Health tip: there's nothing unhealthy about this meal just enjoy all the delicious foods in the salad!

Tortellini is a wonderfully authentic Italian restaurant in Oaklands. The decor is unassuming but warm and inviting, the menu offers a good range of starters, pastas and mains and they always have the most delicious ice-cream as part of their dessert offering. My boyfriend and I often pop in just to get some ice-cream on a hot summers day after taking our dogs for a walk at the park just up the road - its that good! The food is simple but delicious and the service is always great. The little deli offers wonderful anti-pasti, dried homemade pasta, prepared pasta sauces and great Italian meats and cheeses.<br/>A meal here can get pretty pricey but it is worth it for the wonderful experience!
Bean
Haven't been for a lunch or dinner in ages as it's just way too expensive...<br/><br/>For convenience I met someone for breakfast a few weeks back, it was real good, again, how good can Poached Eggs, Avo and Toast be? <br/><br/>Well, when the bread is like you can imagine, above average eggs and butter Avo, it adds to a one up!<br/><br/>Of course, wasn't cheap but also wasn't as bad as I was expecting.
Brenna Weaver
Aperol Spritz and the spirit of good Italian cuisine live here... albeit at a price. Gnocchi was delicious but very rich and heavy not to mention expensive. Fantastic service and a true Italian food experience. Works well as a birthday treat or a really impressive date night.
Samantha Tame Whittaker
I really loved this restaurant. <br/>The layout that blends into the little deli is so unique. It's minimal but warm. The staff are exceptional and the owners are engaging, which is especially charming because they're sweet older Italian folk. <br/>I'm not familiar with Tortellini as a dish but I did find it a little dry and lacking in flavor, that being said I believe this is the traditional Tortellini style so if you're looking for an authentic experience you will find it here.<br/>By dessert time, my friend who was pregnant was craving pistachios, there was nothing on the menu with pistachio but she tried her luck with the waitron. When dessert came she was presented with this beautiful pistachio ice cream and biscuit dish which was a lovely end to the evening.<br/>I would definitely go again.
Eddym
Not often one comes across an authentic Italian resturant of this calibre . A most deffinatly northern Italian influence.Food is great, place is clean and service is a no nonsense .Prices are also no nonsense! !but it's totally worth it.
Lizelle Pottas
We had the osso bucco and the tortellino pasta - both dishes were clearly frozen and put in the microwave. Portions were also very small and the place is very overpriced and pretentious. I'd rather go to a down to earth place with good food!!<br/>
Graham Utian
So I just tried to book a table after frequenting this restaurant for many years for my wifes birthday and for 8 people tomorrow night. I politely asked if I could bring a pre ordered birthday cake and was told by an extremely rude owner that I would have to pay R450 for cake corkage - anyone heard of cake corkage. Needless to say after encountering such a rude woman that I will never return to this restaurant. Clearly they have enough patrons to turn down a table for 8...

Tortellino is my family's go to place for celebrations. Upon arrival you are welcomed with a glass of sparking wine. The service is tops and the food is sophisticated and tasty! The Italian family who owns this spot is very warm and welcoming!

Lunch today (30 August 2016) with the family. The food was delicious and the service was great.<br/><br/>To start there was complimentary bread with olive tapenade and butter as well as olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the side. All very nice.<br/><br/>For mains we all had the veal limone. It was juicy, tender, tasty and extremely flavoursome. The veggies were very well seasoned which was so lovely considering vegetables can be so plain and bland at times. <br/><br/>For dessert we all had iced cream. There are so many different flavours that it was difficult to choose. Ended up having a scoop of hazelnut and a scoop of a milk chocolate like flavour. Both really divine. The biscotti served on the side was a nice touch too.<br/><br/>Will be back soon!
Sam
This is definitely an authentic Italian restaurant. Be sure to make a booking as it is quite popular. We were lucky to be seated inside and not in the outdoor section or deli. Although people didn't seem to mind it.<br/><br/>The owner/manager seemed a little rude, we mentioned we had a booking and she couldn't seem to find it. A waiter did and showed us to our table. After we were settled in she came back to say if we didn't have a booking we couldn't sit there. I thought this a little rude as we did have a booking. The table next to us had to leave because the table was reserved. I feel that this is clearly a problem on the booking side and shouldn't be made the customers problem.<br/><br/>I loved that the complimentary nibbles were a glass of Prosecco, zucchini fries and bread with dips. The zucchini fries were cold, bread was okay but I didn't like dips which had a strange oil after taste.<br/><br/>To start we shared the mussels. I loved that they already shared the portion into two bowls for us. The sauce was delicious and the mussels plump like I have never eaten before. We were also given a finger bowl and bibs. Our waiter even cleaned the table afterwards and placed a napkin over a stain so we wouldn't mess our clothes. I have not received service like this anywhere!<br/><br/>For mains I had the summer pasta with pesto and cherry tomatoes. It was extremely salty. I sent it back with no problem. Overall I didn't like the type of pasta or the taste of this pesto. <br/><br/>We also had the spinach and ricotta cannelloni with mushroom and cream sauce. This was yummy but tasted very rich like butter.<br/><br/>Mains were quite expensive at R120 considering there was no meat.<br/><br/>We were unfortunately too full after this to have dessert. The ice-cream served in a bowl of ice is definitely something to try here.<br/><br/>The food was only a 3-3.5 for me. Service here and the lovely touches are a 5 which bumps the rating to a 4.

Saturday date night treat. Like visiting a popular neighbourhood nonna for a bite to eat. From the moment you sit down the experience is always near perfect.<br/>From the complementary prosseco with addictive zucchini fries. To the some of the best classic family Italian dishes avaliable in Johannesburg. <br/>To finish your night may I recommend a frape and espresso to end your evening and dream of Italy<br/>Really well worth a stop

There are very few restaurants which can claim having been around for as long as Tortellino d'oro, and for good reason. The food is consistently great, service is mostly efficient and the atmosphere lends itself so well to lazy summer days on the terrace (with great lighting) enjoying a bottle of wine and simple, light, fresh and tasty Italian food. One of my all time favourite restaurants in Johannesburg. It's not cheap but good food is something worth spending extra on, and it should be something you spoil yourself on, not something simply done for the sake of sustenance. My only gripe is that I wish the menu changed more often or that the specials varied more, but that's probably something unique to me as I've eaten there for so many years that I've become accustomed to the menu. Highly, highly recommended!

Tortellino used to be my favorite Italian restaurant but my last jaunt was rather disappointing. I think there are a number of far superior Italian restaurants out there that deliver in terms taste, flavour and creativity. Sadly, I will not be back.

Snug little gem, with devine Italian flavour. Definitely granmums cooking. Service is great and staff are very pleasant. There's love running this restaurant.

I Love this place!! I love eating here and also shopping from their market. Reminds me of favourite Italian spots back home in the NYC & Philly!

This restaurant needs to be cloned. From the deluxe deli and Gelato bar to the beautiful tables everything is pristine. Family run with passion and commitment this Italian family should be proud. Beautiful setting for an intimate date. Try the artichoke paste and anchovy butter.

I decided to grab some sea food linguine 😁 this is my second time. It's really great. I just feel like it needs some sort of chilli to it! Otherwise, the food comes on time and the owner is very heartwarming. Lastly, the waiters don't seem to be very concerned when taking the order, but overall the food is great.

Great food and excellent service. Its just too bright for me from a atmosphere perspective. I would recommend the lamb snitchel chop, its great!

I am a fool for a deli, and this one is one for the books. Our favourite pasta in Johannesburg. Great date night restaurant, but also a solid choice for family dinners.

My happy place #tortellinidoro. One of the best #Italian spots in South Africa with consistent good wholesome food. Here is the veal masala, (I ate the #lasagna - my favourite) and the #gelato (amaretto and chocolate). The espresso is to perfection with the little biscuit and sparkling water. This is a family run business and the owners run it daily making it the main ingredient to its success. #illhavewhatdimitrihas #yourtastebuds #reviewnotsponsored #ilovethisplace

I only have amazing things to say about this Restaurant. I was concerned with it being so cold and sitting in their enclosed outside section but they make sure it is warm with heaters and even blankets. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The only suggestion would be music as there is none (with the tables being so close you always feel like you are talking too loudly and it somehow takes away from the romantic feel of the restaurant). Will definitely be back for a meal and to visit their deli.

I live very close to Tortellino and have been coming here to enjoy their delicious homemade pasta for years. It's quite a formal restaurant but has an incredibly cosy and homey feel. The staff have always been very efficient and welcoming. I can definitely recommend the porcini mushroom and ricotta ravioli special - it is my favourite. You also have to end your meal off with their heavenly gelato served in an ice bowl. The owner is also very involved and usually checks up on us a few times during the meal. Lovely. Would recommend to anyone in the mood for a hearty pasta, wine and gelato in a cosy candle-lit set up.

Ambience was great. Waiters super-slick and efficient. My melanzane was extremely disappointing. However, others in our group thought their food was great.

Authentically Italian. Stellar service. I felt the love of an Italian mother in my food. We hadn't made a reservation but a plan was made. They were generous with the cheese and that made my heart and taste buds smile. Awesome ambiance 👏🏾👏🏾

Had such an amazing dinner here last night with my friends! We were welcomed with complementary champagne and zucchini fritters (which were super delicious) and some fresh bread which was a lovely way to start off the evening. The restaurant has a lovely cozy and romantic ambience. For mains I had the lasagna which was amazing! All my friends really enjoyed their food and some of their meals included the porcini and ricotta ravioli, butternut ravioli and minestrone soup. The meals are a bit on the pricey side though. To end off the evening I had Italian hot chocolate which was so great! Our waiter was friendly and accommodating especially when we needed to add more and more chairs to our table! Overall a great evening with great food!

Great Italian Food that impressed all at the table. Our waiter Eric was wonderful. My highlight was my biscotti and pistachio ice cream! Can't wait to return. This is the Italian Restaurant you have been looking for

Authentic Italian cuisine. There is true authenticity in every meal they serve, and in true Italian style, do all the 'simplistic' flavours extremely well. Make no mistake, the meals are extremely tasty, but you will get a more authentic Italian mean here, than you would at your average 'Italian' restaurant in Johannesburg. They also make incredible sorbet cakes which can be arranged in advance for functions and Birthdays etc. Excellent restaurant.

Not your run of the mill italian spot. Top ingredients and a high end clientele, with prices to match BUT trading on its reputation these days. Antipasti was wonderful and generous. Veal pockets with Parma etc. were akin to two rolls of overcooked biltong with Chakalaka for R190 ?? Service was inattentive, rushed and clearly incentivized to pour a bottle of wine as fast and as profitably as possible, which really ruins the evening. Pastas good but not spectacular. Desserts very nice generally. Not the place to go if you expect a great experience for more than R600 a head.

Excellent Italian food. Very authentic. The tortellini in brodo was an amazing surprise. Absolutely wonderful. Book in advance. Fast service. Bit pricey but absolutely worth it.

If you feel like homemade pasta, this is the place for you. Always busy and the food is consistent. Whether you feel like sitting down for a business meeting, a date or running in and grabbing something from the deli for dinner - this place has a lot to offer. A bit more on the expensive side but definitely worth it.

Heard about Tortellini and was not disappointed.<br/>Busy for Friday lunch Great vibe<br/>We had figs with cheese and parma ham Wonderful <br/>Mains were the legendary melanzane parmigiana<br/>Really fabulous <br/>My colleagues had veal piccata with marsala sauce / chicken piccata lemon sauce and lastly a generous portion of seafood pasta<br/>Service was professional and obviously experienced - makes a huge difference<br/>Only one issue - very very hot. Standing fans inadequate<br/>Really needs aircon<br/>Overall outstanding

I had some difficulty with this review... It's mixed.<br/><br/>For starters we ordered figs with Parma ham, and deep fried artichokes- while they tasted good and the ingredients were what they were - for the portion sizes I feel that they were very over priced. <br/><br/>Our mains were beautiful - the pasta was light and delicious- and the flavour combinations fantastic. The vegetarian options were lovely. <br/><br/>Dessert was a serious disappointment, the tiramisu was overly sweet and very boozy and the cannoli not to our liking at all. We should have gone with the amazing looking gelato. <br/><br/>The service was attentive, my problem comes in with the staff packing the restaurant up around us from about 9.30pm. On a Saturday night! We eventually left and continued our conversation in the parking lot.

This is definitely a tricky review for me to write as it was such a varied dining experience. <br/>Let me start off by saying that the ambiance, decor and service are all lovely and I have zero complaints on that front.<br/>The Italian wines on offer are fantastic and the menu is a gorgeous classical Italian menu- it took me straight back to my second home, Rome. <br/>The olive and artichoke tapenade which came with the (not so great) bread were delicious. <br/>For starters, the fried artichokes were tasty and the figs stuffed with rich, potent cheese and parma ham were divine. <br/>For mains, the tortellini both in sage and butter sauce and napolitana sauce were very disappointing. The tortellini were hard and tastless. The sauces were nice but couldn't make up for the pasta. <br/>My ravioli stuffed with butternut and parmesan in a butter and sage sauce were pleasant but again somewhat lacking in flavour. <br/>However, my mother's melanzane parmigiano was AMAZING. It is exactly as it is prepared at the best spots in Rome. I have before this been unable to find any good melanzane parmigiano in South Africa. <br/>Desserts were again sadly disappointing. The tiramisu had a soggy sponge and not enough mousse. The ricotta tart was lacking in flavour and the pastry was hard. <br/><br/>All in all an evening of mixed experiences. I WILL be back for the melanzane and a glass of good Italian wine. But for the prices they are charging, I would definitely expect every item on the menu to be fantastic instead of some being brilliant and some being below average. <br/>

I went there for a romantic dinner for 2. We absolutely loved this place! We were treated to a glass of Prosecco and a canape when we arrived. They then still give you bread and dips for the table. We had the fried Artichoke starter. I then had their Tortellini special and my fiancé had the salmon pasta. The food was divine, although my fiancé did mention his pasta could have more salmon in and the service was great. This is sure to become a new favourite!

If this wasn't an authentic Italian experience I'm not sure what is.<br/><br/>Thee most quaint restaurant filled with all your favourite Italian treats, homemade pasta, croissants and sauces.<br/><br/>The meals were incredibly tasty and very different to what we've eaten at other Italian restaurants, previously. We shared meals amongst 3 of us and not one of us were left disappointed.<br/><br/>Tortellino D'Oro definitely leaves you wanting more!! Scott Isaacs

Great restaurant. The food is delicious. The staff are attentive and nice. Nice venue. Really a great restaurant and highly recommend it for the Italian lovers. Go for the tortellini specialities.

Great food, fresh ideas on the menu, and very unjoburg type food. Highly recommended, booking needed, vibey atmosphere. On the negative side it is a little pricey.

If you are a serious Italian foodie fan, then you MUST try the homemade pasta here! This is. . . and I repeat. . . This is the one and only spot that serves up fresh pasta made daily. <br/><br/>My best friend is an Italian woman from New York, and her family has taught me well on Italian food and wine. This restaurant reminds me of her father's (Papa Pezzo) cooking in Upstate New York and Papa Pezzo knows his stuff! <br/><br/>This is the only Italian restaurant in Jozi that I stay loyal to as their beef lasagna (the pasta literally melts in your mouth!), warm tiger prawn salad, fennel herb salad and butternut ravioli are my favorite dishes. <br/><br/>Very friendly staff and the owner is like my "mama from another mother"!
