Review Urbanologi - Johannesburg

Andrew Thornton-Smith
Very nice place, great upmarket feel. Service was great, Thabiso was very professional and efficient. Good selection of beers, ciders etc. Food was really good. The beer battered fish was epic! with the mushrooms in firm 2nd place. Dish sizes are a bit small, so order two. Decor is really well done, The place gets busy too. So always a good vibe and nice background music too. Definitely recommend it. They also brew their own beer their too. Did I mention the fish was good? :) Will be back at some point.

Located inside the Mad Giant brewery at 1 Fox Street, this tapas restaurant is a worthwhile visit for tourists and locals alike. The menu is somewhat seasonal, and caters for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Each menu item is paired with a recommended house beer (some of which have been named/awarded the the best beer in Africa title). There is also a beer tasting option which allows you to try out 100ml of each, before picking your poison for the day. The kitchen is open to the restaurant, and you can see the delicious dishes being prepared. Since it is tapas, the plates are small, but I found the individual servings to be of a good size. Depending on your appetite, 2-4 dishes would make for a filling meal. The interior is a sight to behold, with its high ceilings, exposed brick walls, murals and installations. Light fittings and furniture reminds you of red, life-sized Lego /Meccano pieces. Textured wood surfaces, polished cast concrete, and the massive stainless steel tanks (for the brewery) completes the contemporary look and feel of the space. The staff is courteous, friendly and well informed. They're always able to assist you with menu options & details. It's best to make a booking in advance, since the venue is popular for events, and you may be turned away when arriving without a booking, or be disappointed by a rowdy bunch, celebrating in the shared space.

29.10.2019 I went to Urbanologi as part of a vintage wine tasting event I was invited to. I've been wanting to come here since they opened but never had the guts to drive to JHB. Finally conquered my fear and attended this event. Loved the place, the setup and the vibe. The tapas type food we received was delicious and makes me want to come back for a full on meal experience. We ate the following: •Yakutori Chicken with Urbanologi Chimichurri. Juicy tender pieces if Chicken, perfectly spiced. •Compressed Watermelon, Olive Tapenade and Feta •Tempura Enoki Mushrooms with Smoked Garlic Relish and Nori Salt. Best dish ever. Light crispy batter and full of yumminess •Beetroot Dauphinois, this for me needed something extra. •Lamb Belly, Roti with Harissa paste, pickled red peppers. Amazing. Melt in your mouth amazing. •Pork Fillet, Potato Puree, Candied Bacon, Brussel Sprouts. Again, delicious and cooked perfectly. Could have left put the brussel sprouts 😂 Lastly was a Cheese Board – selection of local cheese, Preserves, Rye Croute and Seed Crackers. Everything went well with the 2 white wines and 4 red wines we got to taste on the day. Great friendly service from all the staff. Really excited to go back sometimes and experience more. #TheFoodMusketeer #TheFoodMusketeerEats #TheFoodMusketeerDrinks #TFMUrbanologi

Great spot with delicate flights of delectable goodies and a micro brewery on site to keep you oiled with craft brews. Do go in a group of 5-6 and share as many of the plates as you can, you will not be disappointed (make sure you try the seaweed emulsion that accompanies the potato wedges). Cocktails were restrained and tasteful, and beers were legit - I tried both the house porters and they were excellent. Dessert was slightly less exciting but couldn't take away from a great meal! Service was very good starting with reassurances from security upon entry (take that as you wish, this is Joburg).

This was a surprise with super trendy decor and a fantastic waiter. We could order small portions to sample more. Ingredients are farmed no more than 150km away from the restaurant.

Urbanologi is an urban legend! Going in, thanks to its ridiculously high ratings, expectations were ridiculously high. Urbanologi delivered. From the moment we stepped out of our cab, we were warmly greeted and assured of safety in the urban environment, to the moment we sat down, the service and professionalism was unmatched. But most importantly, the food was what we came for! The tapas style at Urbanologi caters for all tastes, from spicy to crisp fried deliciousness and healthful cured goodness. My only recommendation is to order a spread across the menu and savour the inventiveness of every style and technique. I loved that the chefs presented gorgeous plates balanced in taste, texture and style. This restaurant is uber chic and uber delicious, a must try urban legend!

We went to Urbanologi as part of Restaurant Week 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Each of the six courses were beautifully presented, exceptionally tasty, and justified the "not cheap" price charged. Staff were efficient, helpful, and the kitchen accommodating in dealing with a seafood allergy. I look forward to celebrating future special events at Urbanologi :-)

Exceptional food at reasonable prices. Tapas restaurant in a industrial style brewery Great ambiance, friendly staff and very safe area. Private parking across the road. You can take your children but not much for them to do A typical night out will cost you between R300 - R500 on average per person

Amazing food, beautiful place. Definitely a winner for work lunch if your office is in CBD - it will be difficult to match the experience like that in the area. And lunch time during work week it was empty. We tried almost everything on the menu and all was great! Even simple things like potato wedges come with a twist (seaweed emulsion in this case). Desserts are also very good - we tried them all - on the light and more healthier side so you would definitely have a place for them.

Urbanologi is a vibrant inner city eating experience where special little details surprise you on a gigantic scale. This eatery prides itself on locally sourced ingredients, witty waiters, and enormous vats of beer. It is, afterall, inside a brewery. Having opted to drive myself, I can't comment on the entire selection of beer, but their Super Session Cannabis Ale was pretty damn impressive. Having opted to drive myself, I can comment on the safe parking lot, and amazingly friendly car guard on duty... so, if you were wondering if parking your car in central Jozi in the middle of the night was prudent: It is! But damn, do I wish I ubered instead, just to drink the beer. Back to the food! Don't expect to order your own plate of food to wolf down like at your annual birthday excursion to Spur. Urbanologi is suited to a more tapas-style experience. Most of the plates are easily shared between four people, so get a selection of flavours a nibble away. It is delicious and fun in a strange Afro-Asian-pub-fusion sorta way. If it is on the ever-changing menu when you go, I can highly recommend the Beer Battered Fish (on a spectacular thick tartare) and the Sweetcorn Daltjies (with a spicy Vietnamese chilly sauce).
Lynda Carnal
Food is great and well presented. The meat tapas were very good, the desert was a bit soso. The place is lovely and well decorated. Try the house beers as the restaurant is in the brewery.
Luke Mckend
Cool urban space, exposed micro brewery, smaller tapas style dishes. Every dish tasty, although the sirloin kebab was pretty tough. Stand out dish was the aubergine and bone marrow..
Pierre Staude
Really good. Actually deserves the 5 star rating. Food was really good. Only craft beer so that wasn't very good but the food made up for all the weird tasting beer. They also didn't have the craft beer that sounded the least bad, but as mentioned the food was good enough so I could live with the fact that they only had craft beer...
Jason Moss
Nice fun vibe. Good tapas menu. Cocktails are very pricey. I paid R70 for a Margarita! Craft and imported are the only kind of beers and ciders they serve. It’s a great night out with friends. Right next to China Town in the JHB CBD. Kids are allowed in the restaurant area.
Shruti Deshwaal
Love the tapas, have tried 7 different ones so far and they all are really good. The service is excellent as well. Simply Delicious

This trendy restaurant in Johannesburg is worth a visit. Their Asian inspired menu has its dishes grouped into different preparation styles (i.e. raw, cured, steamed, etc.) which is quite interesting. The portions are small and made for sharing, and are very tasty and beautifully presented. Although they are a bit on the pricey side, I recommend that you order dishes out of the different categories to get a fuller experience - it is worth it. The dining area has a vibey atmosphere with graffiti against the walls and the open kitchen that adds to the excitement. It also shares a space with the Mad Giant Brewery, that I reviewed separately, which means you can go order their delicious drafts on tap. I would recommend that when you go, that you make use of Uber (or a similar service) - it's not in the best area, but they drop you off right in front of the restaurant so you do not need to stress about parking.
Heinz Huysamen
Great tappas style food with their own brewed beer. Something really different for Johannesburg. We will be back more.

Amazing! Went to Mad Giant and was in awe of the place. Food was amazing, staff were attentive and its just a must see place!

I am just in love with the whole design of the eating spaces. Its contempoary and different to anywhere else that I have ever eaten in my 26 years of existence. The food is incredible. i have never sampled any delicacies like that before. The staff were welcoming and they almost treat you like you are the only important person there. I need to recommend this place to people who live in any direction of the JHB CBD. This place is most definintely woeth coming to with a group of friends or work colleagues. Well done to the founders and curent managers of the business!
Stanley Kichenbrand
This place is amazing. Anyone who rates this place under a 5 is in my option mad. From the minute you walk through the doors you can feel the energy of a great time. The food was out of this world. We had 11 dishes in total and every single one surpassed our expectations. Our waiter was so patient and friendly (because we were first time guests) even though we were so indecisive about what dishes to have. Urbanologi I'll definitely be seeing you again in the near future. Thanks for a great and memorable time.

The food is exceptional!!! I've been to a good many restaurants in the JHB area recently and nothing comes close to the food taste and quality! The staff are we'll trained and extremely helpful and enthusiastic to please! As an end note, the noise level (music) was high and when approached, the Manager was only too pleased to turn it down, something you don't come across every day . Very definitely a place to visit if you are fussy about quality dining, and want to charm your better half or best friends .

Great atmosphere, great service, great food. Really love this place. Looks wise this is a stunning place. Really enjoyed our visit here. Will def be going again and take more people there. Adrian is the best waiter! Very informative and caring. Love the fact that this restaurant does a good job at wasting less and caring for the environment.
Johan Yssel
A must see when you're in Joburg! The restaurant is very trendy and modern, giving off an industrial chic vibe as you dine between the Mad Giant brewing plant equipment. The food was spectacular (Highly recommend the Black Pepper Pork Belly) and the service exceptional.
Dudu Lenzie
I loved the ambiance, their open plan kitchen just does it for me. The service was on point, from the car guards outside (especially Lucky) to every waiter/waitress inside. However, I found the food disappointing, their spider steak was just too bland for me and I was not particularly chuffed by the pork dumblings- I also missed my apple cider drink
Deborah Spazzoli
Wow! What a lovely lunch we had this afternoon. We had quite a few of the dishes on the menu and it was difficult to say which one was my favorite. I also really enjoyed the beer from Mad Giant. I can't wait for my next visit to try some more of the delicious items on the menu!
Ashlee-Anne Kelly Dowding
Honestly the most amazing food I've eaten in a couple of years, actually...possibly the best food I've ever had. The service, the people, the food, the setting- everything is absolutely amazing!!! Thank you Urbanologi- you guys rock
Clinton Groome
What a great experience. From the moment you arrive until u leave. All employees are friendly, and helpful. The service is outstanding! Maybe it's because the restaurant is a destination spot and do not rely on foot traffic, who knows but hats off to you all. The setting is unique and open. Love an open plan kitchen that faces the entire restaurant. The young dynamic chef knows how to put flavours together that had us guessing all night. Well done! Highly recommend this unique gem in the heart of Jozi CBD.
Pascale Marie Bargehr
Our large group tried many dishes- not all were my best as it could be opinion based, but the majority were really good. They have unique and exotic flavours added to all. The arty decor, space, originality, atmosphere and vibe is what makes it. The performer who played the sax, drums and DJ'd this last Friday night was phenomenal and got the whole crowd going. Thanks for a great time out.
Brandon Bothma
WOW! Bowled over by the food. Highly recommend trying as many different dishes and share. Just so much goodness - Flavours are epic! Well done Kitchen

The atmosphere, food and service was incredible. Each meal is well balanced with tons of flavour! The staff are friendly and supper efficient and the menu is very well priced! I will definitely be back!

A wonderful evening , sharing and tasting 15 of your dishes and still talking about them , great company , good wine 🍷 and 🍻 beer and wonderfully prepared different food makes for a excellent evening out in the heart of Joburg

A 5 star experience from arrival to departure. Great service, Rose was attentive and always kept the beer flowing. Great beer, delisious food and amazing atmosphere. Neo gave us a super brewery tour for dessert. Cant wait to come back ASAP.

Amazing beer and even more amazing food......the place is excellent......if you haven't tried it you are missing out!!! It's an absolute jewel in Johannesburg......

I live 10mins walk away from here and they never once disappointed me. Staff is super friendly, music is great and overall it's just a great space.

Rather late than never! Urbanology was the definition of experience dining. The ethos of the restaurant really stands out for me, and the changing menu is exciting! The aesthic is truly stunning with a very edgy feel (I definitely recommend capturing some photos!) and the presentation of the food match this feel perfectly! They definitely serve items that are more unique but look and taste amazing. I can't wait to check them out again!
TheGirlWithTheBlueHair
The food is absolutely amazing 😭😭😭😭 Definitely going back! Love the vibe too!

Really HORRIBLE service and tiny portions of food.

Despite making a reservation - they couldn't find my reservation and insisted i didn't make one. I had to show the staff on THEIR computer where my reservation was. Because they forgot my reservation, there wasn't a table large enough for my group of people.

Waited ages to get a menu, place orders and to actually get our food. Portions of food where minuscule - even for tapas.

What an amazing place with great beer, my wife and I had heard a-lot about this place from friends, so when my mother visited us from England I thought lets give it a try, Oh my word beautiful restaurant, I had testing of their beers also, killer hop and the legend were my best two, the food was amazing though it took a little bit longer than i expected for a place of such standard never the less the variety of tapas dishes made up for the time.

As for the service this was probably the most excellent service I have ever had in my 30+ years of dining, Thabisu was out of this world very friendly and super intelligent, it was the first time i have ever seen my mother leaving a restaurant without complaining about anything, he took very good care of us, we will definitely come back, I highly recommend this restaurant

What a great combination of flavours. Absolutely divine. The food is on point and paired with their beers, just fantastic. The tables surround the brewing tanks creating an industrial feel. This restaurant is a must. Do it.
Douglas Lorimer
Food was okay but uninteresting and consequently overpriced. Service didn't make a mess of anything but needed some reminders to bring things and was mostly absent. Dessert was a bit of a disaster. I used to enjoy this place, but it wasn't up to scratch this time.
Elin Lorimer
Disappointing, and not what it used to be. The service got increasingly inattentive and the food didn't wow - it was generally okay. Switching on the lights at the brewery tanks also ate a bit of atmosphere. It was was pretty quiet too, to be honest. We'll try another spot next time

Used to be amazing. Went there for restaurant week and food was poor at best. Waiter never around and mains cold. Cutlery not even changed between courses. Sadly won't be back. What a pity

4.9 rating in Joburg? Okay you have my attention!
Let’s say Urbanologi lived up to the hype. Dining here was an experience. My partner and I shared 7 tapas, the waiter was helpful with recommendations. The spider steak is the most delectable, mouth melting steak i have had. The duck bao was also a favourite and the chicken was a lovely asian inspired dish. All the dishes were absolutely fresh as their menu suggests that most ingredients are locally sourced.
I also loved how creative they were with their cocktails. I’ll definitely be returning!

Wonderful place. Great vibe!

Maybe I had too high of an expectation hence the disappointment. The decor makes up for the pricey substandard food. Definitely won't be visiting that place again.
We absolutely loved Urbanilogi, the flavor profile over all the tapas is amazing. If you love good food, in a place with a great atmosphere. This place is for you.

Incredible dining experience, with beautiful decor and energy, + an interesting beer making tour 🥂
The staff are friendly and helpful.
Every plate was unique with exceptional flavours.
Definitely worth a visit !

One Fox has plenty great bars and Urbanologi to mesmerise your tasting senses. The service is pretty laid back but pretty engaging. So if you are the one who wants quick bites and very impatient, this is not the place for you.
I had the tapas style menu so if you come around at lunch and see that the price is lower than you think, that is because the portions are small.
I started off with a cocktail called the Streets - A cinnamon, lime and mint fused with Johnny Walker black. I mostly tasted the cinnamon, mint and lime and not much alcohol which makes this a very pleasant cocktail.
The pea soup was pretty much a melt in your mouth experience with the colours blending well together. The bread which accompanied the soup was soft and lightly toasted.
The fish croquettes had a bit of a zesty lemon flavour and the red cabbage (or maybe it was beetroot) was not acidic and vinegary. This made the dish was delicate and edible.
The duck breast pancetta- this was the playful dish that tricked me. Initially, I wanted to deduct a star for deception as there was no duck breast but after a few mouthfuls, I realised that the duck breast was used to make the pancetta. Nevertheless, the pancetta and promegranate complimented each other well. The parsnip were crispy and complimented the dish well.
The ciabatta was freshly baked but the butter was the unique point as it had the peppery and sour flavours.
The rice pudding was very citrusy and the cinnamon rice crisps combined quite well.
Well, I was wowed by this experience.
We've been twice and had consistently excellent food. I'm amazed at their inventiveness and their ability to turn seemingly ordinary ingredients like roast carrot or gem lettuce into unexpected, complex dishes. Great service as well.
Trevor
Great setting Superb decor If you are looking for something different- go here
Complimenting the decor is the ambience Simply put a great different venue
Menu changes often We had cannabis infused beer and a espresso martini
Mostly tapas so we shared a selection of very interesting and divergent dishes
Real festive setting outside as well
They offer beer tastings
Very good service just added to pleasure of the afternoon
Safe secure so don’t be afraid of venturing downtown
Chereen Williams
Tried urbanology for their 'local is lekker' approach. As always the food did not disappoint. Food was delicious and a great beer selection. Only comment: if you make use of the service of zapper, trust the app instead of asking customers to hang around until payment reflects on your system. Manager on duty should also check in on customers. Otherwise a great evening with flavour packed food and great beers.

Had the most amazing food today. Love your new menu(please update on Zomato)
Love the idea of sourcing produce from local suppliers. Your waiters are amazing.
The ambience is great

I visited this restaurant about 3 weeks ago, and was very excited as the reviews were amazing.
Looking at the menu, my group and I were intrigued by the Duck sandwich and someone in our party ordered the fish.
When we received the fish it was 3 of the smallest pieces I’ve ever seen and was consumed with Garlic.
The duck sandwiches were an even further let down, all that was in the sandwich was over cooked duck and sauerkraut. The sauerkraut did not for the meal and even with it, the sandwich was completely dry.
For R80 each plate, I truly feel it was a let down and I don’t plan on returning soon.
Chantel Ronaldson
Valentines lunch absolutely loved it. Stunning restaurant stylish yet uncomplicated food... love love love. We will be back ... again and again and again .. local is lekker

A must try!!! This restaurant is most definitely worth the travel!!! The foods and flavours are on point!!! Please PLEASE PLEASE MAKE AN EFFORT AND GO!!! I PROMISE you won’t regret it!!! (If you go, use uber!!! It is the easiest!!!)

We have been here a few times but not for about a year as we had a bad experience the last time we went. We had been hesitant to go again especially after reading some of the reviews, but we decided to go for lunch today and really enjoyed it. Stand out dishes, salmon ceviche style salad, the tempura mushrooms, and the broccoli. Battered fish and sweet potato were nice but nothing special. Only thing about going for lunch on a Sunday is that it is quiet so not as good a vibe as the evening. They have changed the configuration of tables so that there are tables next to the kitchen now, we will choose to sit there next time.

Yesterday we went to urbanologi. We were really looking forward to this experience so much. We had a vegan in our party and stipulated that in our reservation a month back. Unfortunately they could not accommodate her at all. If this was not possible, why were we not told after recieving our booking? Further more we have been to a chain Italian food restaurant recently that had multiple options on the menu, further more the waiter was obviously trained on how to handle this sort of customer as he was recommending dishes that could be veganised. That was a truly amazing experience and the service was on point. Urbanologi was a big fat let down. We are foodies. Everyone I know is a foodie, international and local.. i will make sure they know that vegans are not welcome in urbanologi.
Mwila Ndhlovu
I was soooo excited to come here. Heard alot about this place from colleagues. Came here on Sunday 23rd Dec. Waiters are nice and thats sadly about all the positive comments I could give. Food was not filling at all and way overpriced. We had 9 dishes among 3 people, Don't understand the 4.9 rating was so excited. And I'm still hungry.
Nicolene Louw
Tasty, exciting, creative dishes. Friendly service. Great atmosphere. Craft beer is top quality. A nice outing to the inner city for a date or with family.
Fuzzy Lojic
Had the most amazing tasting experience at Urbanologi. A complete sensory overload of delicious smells, tastes and dishes that were so beautifully plated. Coupled with Chef Jack's funny banter and the equally fabulous beer pairing. I really can't pick a favorite dish. Each dish was delicious and the flavours were just so perfectly balanced. Absolutely amazing!
Fatima Kamrudin Mamod
We had their 6 course tasting menu. The setting and atmosphere is very trendy. The service was great. The food came at perfect intervals. My favourite dish was the tempura battered fish and coal fired broccoli 😍😍😍 The raw milk gelato with honeycomb was delicious, velvety, creamy and sooo good. Definitely a must try restaurant
Marian
Overpriced . Over rated . Not worth it . Wine at over R105 per glass . Will not return. This needs to be over 140 characters , but how much worse can I say?
Great lunch today at Urbanologi! Interesting tastes, awesome venue and our waiter Ralph was fabulous. Top dishes for me were the broccoli, pork belly and yakitori chicken while friends raved about their sweet potato and steamed brioche. Tried a few deserts as well...all interesting but the lime frozen yoghurt (that came with the churros) was so good, a friend asked for a takeaway! Definitely going back.

Finally got to try Urbanologi after wanting to for a long time. Due to the hype, and mostly positive reviews, my expectations were high😂. There was a secure parking lot and reservations are definitely recommended.
The setting is an industrial microbrewery. Since we don’t drink beer, I can’t comment on that aspect. The menu we were handed by our waitress was more limited than the one displayed online and we were told that the duck pancake had been substituted with pork - which was also rather disappointing - but better to learn before we ordered.

The menu is tapas style, and out waitress recommended 5 or 6 dishes to share.
In the end we settled on the venison, yakitori chicken, mushroom springrolls, snoek toast and steamed brioche. The definite winners were the yakitori chicken which had delicious smoky favours and an interesting take on the traditional chimichurri. The mushroom springroll was our least favourite - the flavours didn’t blend well together. The dishes are quite small but about 5 did manage to fill us up. The steamed brioche with a truffle flavoured filling was a delicious end to the meal. We decided to skip dessert as none of the options looked all that appetizing. The service was average, even though the restaurant was not full.

In conclusion, I would say its a great setting with potential to be better. I’ll likely return to try the duck pancake next time.
Alet-Mari Geldenhuys
Had high expectations but most dishes were just a total miss for us. It is totally over priced and just not great. The brewery vibe is nice but the food next door at the market was better 🙈
Kyle
I absolutely love Urbanologi. The vibe is awesome and the food is great. It is really something different to the usual restaurants and it was an absolutely great experience. The mad giant beers are also very good.
Shaun Gunning
This is some of the best food I have ever eaten in my life. We ordered 8 different dishes (starters, mains and desserts) to share and not a single one disappointed. I'd love to provide a review of each dish individually but what's the point? They were all spectacular!
Wilhelm Nauta
Took two international guests to Urbanologi. We tasted the beer selection on offer (100 ml each) and ordered several of the tapas dishes. I can honestly say that each one of the dishes was delicious. The ambience is trendy but professional. Pay them a visit.

Date night with the wife Georgia Yannoulis and thought of Urbanologi as I had see it was exceptionally rated and food looked superb... and the fact That there was a Dj playing that night just made it seem like a super idea.
1. Decor and atmosphere on point.
2. Vibe picked up as night went by and Dj played his deep house👍🏼
3. Choice of drink was difficult and went with waiters suggestion of tasting the various beers before ordering... not such a great ideas as each taster cost us in total close to R100 (we were not told it was going to cost us)
4. Loads of exciting things on the menu bit with the high expectations we can with... food was not all that great tasting, lack of seasoning and taste (I did notice that the chefs where not tasting the food they where preparing and that was probably part of the issue)
5. Although the meals where tapas style, they are quite big and not more than 5 would be suggested.
6. Loooooooved the dessert. ON point

Don't think we will be back in a hurry, but would recommend the try for someone looking for something different in Joburg.
Anton Du Plessis
Great ambiance, excellent food and all well priced. Will definitely recommend this place.

Tapas type restaurant. Generous sized portions at reasonable prices.

Definitely worth every cent.

Urbanologi is a Beautiful restaurant, trendy decor and atmosphere. It is part of a brewery, the big beer drums are a part of the decor. The food is Asian inspired with very interesting flavors and combinations. The area is not too great so I would not recommend driving there rather Uber, but once you are in the restaurant it is totally safe. All in all a great experience.
Kamogelo Mthoke
Great ambience and atmosphere, the decor and design is so beautiful I was however a little disappointed with the food, the waiting stuff were excellent and the service was really good
Tam Loves Food
Was slightly disappointed with the quality of food as I had come with very high expectations. A lot of the menu items were not available (no duck dishes for example) and I found some of the dishes to lack seasoning.
Excellent presentation however, and a very cool setup. Would come again just for the ambience!

We picked Urbanologi for a lazy lunch and were not disappointed. Set in the mad giant brewery in JHB CBD, there is a convenient parking lot right across the entrance. Decor inside is industrial but modern- very cool. Drinks venue has a nice variety of wines, beers and other drinks. I opted for a carafe of Rose and my husband for beer tasters. Food menu is divided into the means of cooking or preparation- raw, steamed, fried etc. we opted for a selection across the board- oysters, duck pancakes, crispy tamarind pork belly, calamari and chicken yakitori. Everything being delicious, our favorites were the chicken, duck and oysters. Awesome location for an outing with friends or something than a usual meal out.

After everything I have heard about this place I was very excited when my partner let me know we would be dining here for my birthday. We had the following:
Pork dumplings
Chicken
Calamari (chokka)
Duck pancakes
Deep fried potatoes
Pork belly
Ginger Malva

Every single dish was mouthwatering and the flavours were such a great surprise. My favourite was definitely the duck pancakes, the pork dumplings and the pork belly.

The malva had great accompanying components. We couldn't get enough of the popcorn soil and the lime ice cream.

The only let down was the service.
Definitely would recommend

Flavour, flavour, flavour!

Food was well seasoned and cooked! Enjoyed all my selections! Will do this again!

Loved the vibe and atmosphere on Friday!

The deco and setting of the place is really cool!

Enjoyed the Mad Giant lager and Weis! Awesome taste

For an awesome Saturday night, I decided to try Urbanologi in Marshalltown. The place was surprisingly quiet (after seeing all the good reviews) but the atmosphere was traffic. The warehouse vibe, aesthetics and music really made the place feel modern and chic.
On to the food, the dishes were tapas style meant for sharing. I ordered the crispy dropped black pepper pork belly with a great tamarind sauce on the side and a duck wrap. Both were presented stylishly and tasted awesome with perfect seasoning. The tamarind sauce was spicy and salt and worked wonderfully with the crispy pork. The duck wrap was fantastic. I would highly recommend both and I am waiting to go back to try the other dishes. The service was efficient and the staff was quick to respond to requests (though it was a quiet night). Would definitely recommend anyone to visit Urbanologi.

I was looking forward to visiting Urbanologi for a few weeks, not only from checking reviews but also hearing reviews from friends.

It is sad to say, I wasn't blown away (NOT saying I didn't like their food, merely saying I expected more).

We had one dish from each category and the only one that I enjoyed properly was the one chicken dish (pic below, can't remember the name).

I also ordered a lemonade and received a tumbler glass of which the lemonade didn't fill.

I will go back one day and try something different.

A midweek visit for a business dinner, which made for an exciting change into what is the oldest part of Jozi CBD. Now the modernized Mad Giant brewery, ordering all varieties of their beer is a must do, also recommended are their cocktails! The entire menu was ordered with a sharing feast commencing. Hero’s were the tender melt-in-your-mouth chicken dishes, the herb seared venison, and sublime dumplings. Service was warm and knowledgeable though slow, especially for a quiet eve. Interesting eye-catching bathroom decor too. Next visit will be on a weekend to enjoy the last of summer hopefully listening to live music and to enjoy some downtown street culture.

The location is great, parking was safe. Very well thought out restaurant. Food is outstanding. All their menu items are small portions which allow you to try a few things. Desserts outstanding. Cocktail menu is different and really good. Will definitely go back.

Quite disappointed at my recent dining experience on Valentine’s Day at the restaurant. Firstly, they did not inform patrons that it was a set menu nor were our dietary requirements requested. Food was served in small tapa style plates - portions too small and left me hungry. Was not impressed at all by the entire menu and all in all, it appeared that they were hiking up the prices for that night by serving a set menu.

The food is amazing & very unique. I loved the meat dish with the truffle. The calamari as well was great. The presentation was great & the service was good.
Dionné Annandale
Oh my word! That's all I can say the best food I've ever tasted. The combination of flavours are amazing. I absolutely love the pork dumplings definitely a must try.
Jolene
Honestly the best tapas I’ve had in a while. The pork dumplings were the BEST, but all of the dishes we tried were amazing. They also had a great variety of drinks such as gin for non-beer drinkers. I am so glad I finally stopped by and they are definitely worth the rage.

My Lord What A Wonderful Place to eat and chill the beer is good that tamarind dressing had me trying to find the recipe and take it home with me

Definitely need a new rating scale as 5 doesn’t do this place justice! From the decor to the food and service, everything was on point. We sampled practically everything on the menu and everything was tantalizingly scrumptious. Unfortunately due to the enjoyment factor we didn’t get many pics!

This is an exciting place. Imaginative decor in a vast area. The food, 'new age' tapas, is like the place exciting and unusual. But not all our plates were well cooked. The tempura mushrooms were cold and seemingly overcooked. If you like craft beers, unusual food and a terrific environment I recommend you visit Urbanologi and the Mad Giant bar.

Diner here this past Sunday, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. You’ll find this joint at 1 on Fox Street tucked away inside a Beer Brewery.

Their drinks menu is extensive and the food is organised and arranged according to the way it is prepared.

We tried their take on Pork Belly which is served with a citrus dipping sauce, the Calamari (which unfortunately was over cooked and rubbery) as well as their steamed pork buns.

For dessert we tried their Ginger Malva with Lime Sorbet which I found to be light and refreshing, as well as their Banana Melt which was incredibly rich and decadent
Natache Iilonga
These guys are really pushing taste boundaries. You will literally be pleasantly surprised. The waiters are always more than happy to help further explain each dish to detail, which for first timers is valuable. The food experience is better experienced, for words are in sufficient.

Really awesome vibe and the food was amazing. The desert is to die for!! Very unique and intriguing design. Even going to the loo was quite an experience I must say!

Our experience at Urbanologi was in a word, fabulous.

We booked our office year-end function with them and even during the planning stages, it became clear that they pay extraordinary attention to detail. We were not just booking a meal, but an experience.

From decor to drinks, everything is beautifully executed. The food is a treat to look at and even better tasting, paired perfectly with their fine craft beers and superb local wines.

The service is outstanding. The waiting staff are clearly well trained, attentive and friendly.

A big thank you to Roger, Myron, Jack and Lovemore for making our time with them an experience to remember. Highly recommended.

Very disappointing. On arrival we were told that their vodka was sold out. Whilst the food was good, we waited over 45 minutes for the meat dishes and when we asked to order more, we were told that the chef had already ‘gone home’.
Miguel Dos Santos
When going to any restaurant, you always want to leave with a smile on your face. This place does not disappoint. From the food to the service to the ambiance, it is just a great experience. Food is really tasty and fresh. Went for a mixture of options and all of them had their own unique flavor. Great service which was attentive and helpful. Amazing experience
Always something special when I come here , so much so that I forget to post / review it! Was here with my best last night and tried the other dishes on the menu that I usually ignore. No disappointments, not surprised! They had a dj yesterday , he was cute . Back to the food , the dessert was a ginger and lime malva pudding sensation that you have to try before you die. Enjoyed my lamb , was avoiding the pork belly that I didn't order on this day - it's really not a hit with me . It tastes more like basic crackling for me. But that's the only item I would personally skip! Everything else , including the ambience of this spot is exciting and keeps me coming back! Love it.

As the name suggest this is surely the best logical place for urban food lovers.Really appreciate the food combinations here and the flavours indiced. The meat here is tasty, wedges crispy and the sauces are too tasty.
Viantha Naidoo
Perfect. We went in a group of 6 and every plate of tapas that arrived was exceptional, creative, considered and provocative. Wine list is great, with wines and beers available to purchase from their in-restaurant store. Attentive service. One of the best meals I've had in Joburg.
Mariska Van Niekerk
Amzing experience! Well thought out dishes with wonderful flavor combinations. Try something from each section! The pork belly was really good! And the beer is top notch!
Kylie Jade Botes
My taste buds haven't experienced food like this in a long time. Everything is perfect. The meat is perfect, the wedges are crispy the sauces are beyond tasty. There is zero need to add any salt to this food, the flavors are something I haven't quite experienced before, so much natural flavor. The vibe is fantastic, the DJ was great. I can't wait to go back. May just be my new favorite restaurant.
James Coetzee
Such great food, and a bunch of great beers too! Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the vibe is great.

I wish I could leave shorter feedback than 140 characters.

Interesting meal in a great setting. We ordered lots of Tapas to share with our American visitors. Food was nice, flavours good but really very small portions. The lamb was very chewy, had to send it back to be cooked a bit more. Don’t think we will return. I expected a WOW lunch but we were disappointed.
Melanie Meyers
The only way I can describe my meal...a flavour explosion in my mouth! Wow! So impressed...sustainable fish, own veggie garden and the friendliest service! The chokka was delicious...never liked it before I tasted your way of preparing it. The steamed brioche buns❤️, actually everything was a perfect balance of deliciousness!

Yasmim Tuxen
Fantastic food, great service, wish I could remember the name of the waiter :)
My favorite was the tempura shimeji
Marentia Van Kasterop
We visited this venue by accident....and wow!! And wow again! Situated inside the Mad Giant Brewery at 1 Fox street.

Attention to detail is unbelievable. In the way the restaurant is decorated as well as the taste and presentation of the dishes.

Even the service fits. Definitely on a higher standard compared to what we have experienced recently.

You have to go and see for yourself 😁😁
Janetr87
My second visit and I was really looking forward to it as the first had been great. Sadly not as good. The food was average, apart for dessert, which was lovely. Service also needs attention.
Tamara Reddy
Visited The Mad Giant and decided to have lunch at Urbanologi. While indulging in delicious tapas you can order a beer tasting ( six craft beer tastings for R80) which made for such an incredible dining experience.
Their dishes have the most unique but absolutely mouth-watering combinations. The Yakitori Chicken has to be one of the best chicken dishes I have ever tasted.
The service at Urbanologi is top notch, with knowledgable waiters and waitresses.
I definitely recommend a visit to Urbanologi when visiting The Sheds at 1Fox.

A friend told me so much about this place last year, had very high expectations spilling from what I heard, so took the opportunity to bring some friends from overseas with me, Firstly I must say I was totally impressed by the decor it is amazing the way the brewery is in the restaurant the whole concept is just out of this world, however the down side is that some of the dishes were disappointing which explains the low pricing, the Deserts were even worse you cant really compare the place to marble as it has been, it is by far behind. On your visit here do not expect to any type of vodka or cocktail apparently this is an attempt to force you to drink craft beer even though you do not want beer or you not a beer drinker, drinks limitations are terrible. The restaurant was empty so booking is just a waste of time it does not seem like an in-demand place to be, unlike other fancy restaurants in the north here you can just walk in anytime you decide to pop by and its open everyday of the week, Service was awesome forgot our waiter's name but he was excellent although one could not help but notice everyone seemed down, i felt like i was walking through a sweat shop with angry and sad looking faces, our waiter did try to fake a smile or two for us though one could tell in was not genuine. However overall experience it was just okay great restaurant with below par standards for a high end place would visit again only if I have to impress a beer lover, otherwise the place did not meet my expectations given that it has been compared to some of the best restaurants in joburg
Kevin Barrie Levy
Wow - what an experience! The restaurant has a buzz and energy all of its own...craft beer is crisp and fresh (and brewed in house) - tapas style food is delicious - a #KevFavFood first - Pinotage infused coffee and saki 😇 what a fab lunch indeed! The final accolade - impeccable service from everyone, from start to finish! 5* truly achieved and highly recommended to try before you die! So many incredible dishes but the stand out ones were - steamed brioche bread with almond butter and spring salad to start - then the calamari and broccoli dishes and the chicken and lamb rump with the cured beetroot - we will be back for sure!

I tried a little bit of everything and what I've eaten so far was yummy!!! The location isn't ideal but the experience was worth the drive. Love the alcohol selection. Great service.

Urbanologi is such a gem😍😍😍😍 its perfect. I really really love this restaurant, this establishment knows its story. I can't fault it in anyway.
Vince La Muzika
Amazing place ,The food is really beautiful, price is reasonable,we had a great waitress call Tshidi who always made sure everything was well and suggested us to try the chicken yakitori which was great
Carmyn Schoeman
In the times we live in it is too expensive for a tapas style experience it seems. We had the following:

The anchovy and chicken skin combination was smack of the sea and overwhelmed the taste for me.
The oyster; perhaps because it's a warm dish; I didn't like the texture and the taste.
The pork belly is definitely a huge winner; its slivers of pork in a tempura batter with the most amazing butternut sauce droplets.
The tempura mushrooms ; I assume you can't really get a mushroom crispy (?); it lacked taste and the sauce it came with was very sour.
The broccoli dish was super spicy but a lovely idea behind the sauce.
The chicken yakitori was deliciously soft chicken pieces and a sauce with a bite.
Didn't enjoy the beef cheek texture although it tasted nice.
The mosbolletjies was ok.
The first item on the dessert menu was a tiny piece of banana bread (I assume) with a teaspoon of ice cream and a sprinkle of halva; it lacked taste.

The bill came to almost R900 for 2 people including beer tasting and 2 glasses of Boschendal Chardonnay

Knowledgeable Staff thats knows the menu top to bottom, rustic industrial feel. Taste explosion and well paired beverages. The emulsions are well blended.

Went through for dinner last night with a couple of people and I was thoroughly impressed. The location may put people off but they would be missing out because of it. The brewery on the location is impressive but the food steals the show. A mixture of small portion modern tapas offers customers the ability to try a variety of different dishes, many of which have contrasting tastes that blend together to produce something better then the sum of its parts. I loved the pork and butternut along with the chicken teriyaki but I can say all our dishes were top quality. Very well priced and a great spot that I can see myself becoming a regular at. Congratulations on a great new Jozi venue
Mark Sham
I just have to say that I love everything about this place. The food is on the pricey side but totally worth it in my opinion because everything tastes absolutely amazing and the quality is out of this world. The craft beers from the Mad Giant side are also straight down my alley. And then finally, the atmosphere and setting is world class. All in all, this is a place I go to at least once a month and everything is on point.
Nixie
Wow where do I begin! This place is a food explosion. Fantastic service, awesome layout, family friendly and the food is way to good! I will def be back...the calamari was insanely good!
Aimee Lloyd Fowler
The food, service and value for money were all 10/10.

Our waitress (I forgot her name unfortunately) was sensational. Witty and offered us great advice on food and wines. Her service was efficient and she was always available when we needed her.

At first, I felt the venue was very large and a little canteen like, but as the evening progressed and the space filled up, it grew on me and the industrial hipster vibe was actually pretty cool. A variety of large murals on the walls caught our eye as did the massive indoor beer brewery which is housed in the same space.

The food itself was unreal, each and every item we ordered was remarkable and delicious.
We particularly enjoyed the Pork Belly, the Lamb shortribs and tempura mushroom thingies which came with a mind blowing tamarind sauce, but each and every item as I said, was amazing.

Highly recommended, we will definitely be back!
The Great Diner
1Fox Street magic. Hidden in the Mad Giant beerhouse, this gem is totally sparkling. Decided on this spot for our anniversary. Loved the interior, with the huge mural behind the bar being a stunning centrepiece of the restaurant. Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. Took us through the menu and the explained the different beers to match. We tried the crispy pork belly, calamari, beef cheeks, heirloom carrots, potato wedges with matcha mayo and the chicken yaritoki. Everything was amazing. First time trying beef cheeks, a bit rich for me, but overall satisfaction. Beautifully presented. Only downer, was a long wait between one of the dishes. Not sure why.

New Menu is fantastic ! Service to go with the food, excellent !! Well done ! Compliments to the chef this time around , the sweet potato dish should have one the pellegrino award , amazing !

So starting off I would like to make it clear. The first time we went to Urbanology we were blown away and loved every dish.

The second time. Not so much. One of our favourite dishes (steamed truffle cream brioche) was removed from the menu and replaced with a boring, tasteless, ball of dough sprinkled with dukah on top. Now there is the real possibility that others may disagree with me and love this new addition to the menu. Or perhaps our favourite dish was too costly to make. Who knows.... Anyway, enough rambling..... We also found that the chef seemed to have picked up on recent food trends and over did the beetroot (including in our chocolate desert). Probably our fault for ordering it. We both love beetroot but in this case we were sorely disappointed. So we're not being biased. None of the dishes we had, had the same flavour or quality as our first visit to this restaurant. Our pork even seemed old as if it had been sitting there for some time.

I'm writing this in the hopes that urbanology will see this post, and compare themselves to the first few months they were open. Something has changed. Whatever that may be, it isn't doing you any good.

Please don't become complacent now that you have a good rating on Zomato and your tables are fully booked. I hope to visit your restaurant again, I believe everyone deserves a chance. Hopefully i will be just as happy as the first time. In which case this review will be promptly deleted and another one created.

This restaurant is another hidden gem that I have not heard about. It is located on Fox Street with an art gallery close by that just enhances the atmosphere surrounding the restaurant. I came here for lunch and it has the perfect ambiance for a meal out with friends or a special occasion. A must for the beer lovers!
The food was super tasty. Quantities are small and they advise you to order about 2 dishes and see how it goes. It is great to order a couple of dishes and share it as it is worth it to get a taste of everything. My favourite dish was their chicken.
Presentation is excellent, you wouldn't want to eat it. Staff are very friendly and service was surprisingly very quick. Definitely worth experiencing.

Urbanologi has a nice tapas selection. It was great to try out and I know the menu is changed often so gives you a chance to have different dishes each time. One of my favourites was the sweet potato served with teriyaki sauce. I wasn't too happy with the amount of beets in the dessert but it was worth a try. The steak and pork dishes were delicious.
Clinton Milne
Fantastic set up here at 1Fox. Urbanologi is the restaurant at Mad Giant brewery serving tapas style food. Portions are small but they pre warn you and suggest that you order about 3 dishes. They bring the dishes out in sections from the lightest to the heavier dishes. Food is really well presented and gives you a flavour explosion in your mouth. Well paired with the beer. If not up for the small dishes then you can have a burger in the beer garden. Staff knew the menu back to front and service excellent...

We booked a table for 2 on a chilly winters afternoon and it was well worth the effort.
Service was friendly and professional.
The atmosphere was relaxed and the setting is unique in the Mad Giant brewery.
The food was fantastic and we especially love the fact that high quality dining is available in such a casual setting.
We had - Anchovies, Chicken, Lamb, Pork, Mosbolletjies, Tuna and Ice Cream.
Absolutely amazing :)

What an amazing place to spend a Sunday lunch!! The food is absolutely fantastic and pleases the belly!!
The atmosphere is super chilled and the service is brilliant!!!
The beer is tasty and some decent craft!!!
If you haven't been you have to go !!!!

Cannot comment on food. Just the staff's competency in taking a booking. I do not seem to have much luck when it comes to a restaurant's staff.

This is still by far the best place I've been to. The price you pay is definitely worth it :). I absolutely looooved the seaweed emulsion with the potato wedges. I've never had a sauce better than that. The Tuna was good, pork belly isn't really my thing but they really topped everything off with this perfectly cooked chicken. Tender and tasty!
Julia Louise Domanski
Well wasn't THIS meal worth the wait! I have been wanting to come here for months, and a voucher from Zomato finally gave me the final push I needed to make a booking.
We walked in on a quiet Friday afternoon and I was immediately blown away by the stunning decor. The warehouse vibe is chic and bright with lots of natural light and warm tones of red and charcoal to make the space both airy and intimate. The open plan kitchen is amazing, as is the brewery backdrop.
The waiters are superbly trained, and we had a few different guys serving us who were all equally friendly and efficient. Let your waiter tell you about the various dishes and potential beverage pairings before you dive in.
Between my mom and I, we ordered 6 plates of food plus one dessert and we were full to the brim by the end of the meal. The portions are very generous for tapas and good value for money in my opinion.
Now onto the food: we tried the beef cheek, pork belly, yakitori chicken, lamb ribs, miso aubergine, deep fried potato and finally the banana ice cream dessert.
The key thing that stood out for me was the excellent use of texture in all the dishes. Smooth reductions and purees are paired with crunchy nuts and batter. The balance of flavour is also very skilful.
My favourites were the lamb ribs, yakitori chicken and the pork belly. I HIGHLY recommend these three.
The deep fried potatoes were essentially potato wedges which were nice but not amazing (I didn't enjoy the seaweed emulsion they came with but others might).
The aubergine was interesting in terms of texture but was a little flat in terms of flavour.
The beef cheek was perfectly cooked and I loved the cauliflower puree it came with. I'm not a huge fan of this cut of meat generally but if you are, definitely give this a try.
Finally, the dessert was absolutely gorgeous. The beer / hops flavour permeated everything without being overwhelming and the banana ice cream is a revelation.
I cannot wait to return and try everything else on the menu :)

A while ago myself and the boyfriend made our way to Urbanologi - finally !! And all i can say is wow.

As you walk in you greeted by the smell of amazing food, the Mad Giant brew house and the fresh, industrial urban chic look.

We had an amazing waiter and asked him for some recommendations.
He suggested the pork belly, egg plant, steak, tuna, chicken and some other incredible dishes. Being the gluttons we are we ordered everything he suggested - much to his surpise. Yes people I can eat !!

AMAZING. There are literally no words. Everything was to die for. Its very seldom you come to a place and try find something to fault them on and find NOTHING.

We then ordered some desserts (also our waiters recommendation). Sadly they didnt have grappa so we opted for the Japanese whiskey (yet another recommendation).

I can honestly say that the team at Urbanologi are very professional and exceptionally knowledgeable and should be proud of their establishment and in particular their food.

Yum yum a million times yum.

Well done guys.

We had amazing service and food was mind blowingly good. I booked a table of ten and at a few hours notice the manager was so accommodating to change my booking for fifteen people. On top of that our waiter, Albert, looked after us in terms of drinks and menu. It was my birthday and the first time we had all been there so Albert just ordered for us and brought us amazing dishes. The place gets full quickly so I'd recommend making a booking and not just turning up. The decor is modern industrial and I loved it. Great vibe. We are definitely coming back for the mushrooms, the chicken, the pork belly, the beer and the sorbet!
