Review Die Walskipper - Jeffreys Bay

Rob Leal
An absolutely fantastic experience. We were met by the friendliest waiter at the door who went out of his way to make us feel special. This place is next level with the wakes gently breaking a few metres from our table. I had crayfish for the first time in my life and I wasn't disappointed. If you are ever in J-Bay, I can highly recommend Die Walskipper đź‘Ś

What a wonderful experience and host Michelle and Ferdi was like a jack out of a box. Great helping with the menu and just an awesome man serving us. A Must on your List. Thanks with Lindsay Weyer

Not many places where you can eat with your bare feet in beach sand. Might not be everyone’s thing - but I liked it. When we were there it was busy but we still got good service. I would recommend the seafood. Duh.

Wonderful experience! Will recommend Walskipper to anybody. Had a wonderful birthday celebration for my 14year old. Very friendly waitress with great advice and conversation.

I first heard of this restaurant in 2014 when the Late Chef Lentswe Bhengu visited the restaurant on Africa on a Plate. From my home in America, I pinned this restaurant and said "one day I will get there as everything about his experience sold me." Fast forwarding to my one day- This place did not disappoint, from our host Henrik to the amazing platter of fresh food, to the scenery, to the wine pairing- it was perfection. The food was served paella style: calamari, squid heads and prawns were cooked to a golden perfection. The garlic mussels were unfairly delicious, tender, and juicy...and the creamy sauce added a rich depth of flavor to the rice beneath it. And the crayfish- oh it was so rich and buttery...a must for the lobster lovers. The linefish was also delicious, but it lost its way amongst the other delicious things on the platter. This was a perfect 10! I'm grateful to the late Chef Lentswe Bhengu for introducing this wonderful place to me. And the great people behind the brand🥂 Follow our adventures on social: IG/TT: @2ps_outapod FB: Philippe Patrina #whereispoppy? #philippeandpatrina #pandpadventures

The most beautiful view! Lekker vibe and the food was amazing! Roosterkoek and then Hake and Calamari with rice. Will definitely be back asap!

WOW! The food is delicious, the atmosphere amazing, the view breathtaking and the service excellent thank you to Mariesa, our waitress, who gave us just that little bit extra customer service. It's definitely a must visit!

Very good environment, the restaurant is next to the beach and has a sandy floor so it feels like you’re dining on the beach. The restaurant primarily serves seafood but also has some meat dishes. The fish and the meat are barbecued over hot coals to give an incredible flavour and texture. They also have a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, wines and coffees. Service is very good and the quality of seafood is top notch. Definitely recommend. Ambience: 10/10 Taste: 7/10 Service: 8/10 Value for money: 7/10

We had a lovely meal and experience at this restaurant. It was recommended by a friend and we decided to go to J-Bay for the beach and the food later. The restaurant is situated by a section of the beach which is very nice for the kids to play nearby. The restaurant has an open-feel vibe with an outdoor grass section and fireplaces all around the restaurant for the indoors. Their floor is covered by sand so you can put your feet in the sand while you dine. We had very fresh oysters to start with and a shellfish platter for two to share. The platter has everything - crayfish, calamari, crab, langoustines and scallops. It was so fresh that you could taste the quality of the seafood. The meats on the crayfish were cooked perfectly and so soft to chew. One of the best seafood I have ever eaten. This is definitely a proper seafood restaurant that serves high quality seafood. They also serve meat dishes but since you are going to a beach, you have to try their seafood. We had a lovely server, his service was attentive and efficient. We had seafood only so the prices were slightly on the high side but it was so good that it was very worth it!!!

Food is decent, but BLAND. Rather go to a small fish and chips shop they got more taste. .
.
.
.
.
.
.

.

.
....

.

..
.......
...
..... ....(Do not go there)
(Do not go there)
(Do not go there)(Do not go there)

Fantastic setting, friendly service, Good food but overpriced. Bread, pate and jam at R 55.00 is a bit much. My wife loved the prawns, I had the lamb shank which was average and a seriously small portion of veggies. But if you want a spot with a view you cannot do any better.

This is an absolute must when visiting J-Bay! A beach bar styled restaurant tucked away on a private beach. Casual, stick your toes in the sand and enjoy a variety of fire cooked seafood while looking out at the ocean! Service is great, restaurant has a bo-ho rustic look and the food portions are generous, well cooked and delicious! We had a brilliant evening and hope to return!

Was the best ribs ever. Other people also had the prawns and scallops and said it was very tasty. Loved the casualness of the place. The homemade bread and coffee at the end also delicious.

Best sea food in South Africa and service was 10/10 ask for davie what a little champion he is. Just remember to book at least 2 days in advance.

Really good food. Value for money. The service is excellent. Our waiter was super friendly and efficient. The ambience was fantastic. If you in Jeffery’s Bay, you need to eat here. Bookings are essential as you will wait. Davie was our waiter. Really good.

The setting and atmosphere is enough to win me over. The service was great. I loved the calamari and would rather order a full portion calamari instead of a platter as the prawns and kingklip wasn't the best I've had.

Overall a good experience

This is almost the same as De Vette Mossel in Mosselbay. You have to book especially over the holiday season as they are always packed. You will find very tasty seafood dishes and local wines.

Came here for a birthday lunch. My first time being here and I was amazed by the rustic beach look and how we were sitting in the sand so to speak.. Small tin cups for wine was cute and we laughed about it.. when the food came it looked amazing and tastefull but alot of the seafood was over cooked giving it a chewy taste.

Just wow. What a venue and what a setting. You can really not get any closer to the ocean unless you are in it. I love the casual vibe where you can sit with your feet in the sand and just relax. The service is incredible and our waiter was very knowledgeable and we never had to wait longer than 5 mins for anything we ordered. We opted for the shellfish platter for 2 and we should have invited more friends as the portions were fantastic and all the ingredients fresh. I most like how they serve everything in old tin cups and plates...reminds me a lot of my childhood. In the summer I can only imagine it must be a haven to visit and spend some well deserved down time at. A must visit if you are in the area as a landmark setting in Jay bay.

Popped in for fish and chips.

They refused to serve me fish and chips, insisting that I pay for calamari that I did not want.

I finished my coke and left and will never return.

I hope the international guests are sufficient, as this place does NOT cater for local guests.

Ongelooflike lekker kos en atmosfeer!!! Die spyskaart bied n lekker verskeidenheid en hulle is glad nie skaam met hulle porsies nie, dit is wel aan die duur kant, maar hay- met so n view, who cares?

Go for the setting and the views, have a glass of wine, dont waste time eating there. Food is average at best. Service was good, but does not make up for bland and uninspiring food. Jbay has much better to offer

Exceptional venue on the beach! The best view from any restaurant in Jeffreys Bay.

My favorites are their spare ribs and their Mediterranean Calamari!

Location is as good as it gets. Food - even better. Service was 10/10. Could of been one of the best meals of my life. A must visit for anyone coming to Jbay

Great food in a truly unique setting. I'm not sure if you can get closer to the ocean! Ditch your shoes and enjoy the feel of the sand between your toes while eat tasty seafood. The homemade bread and tin crockery are touches that make this an experience you aren't likely to forget!

Had a superb lunch on a very warm winter's day. From the home made bread to the large portions, everything was a winner. Waiter Nick was attentive. The meat was good and the seafood good value for money. The kids also got to play on the beach below - perhaps a few steps to get down are needed.

This is an really nice place of you just want other cut loose and enjoy the beach, sand and the local food. It may look tacky from the outside but looks can be deciving. Make sure you go on pay day as there prices can be a bid expensive

The venue is near perfect, we were there at night on a windy day and it was still great with the moonlight reflecting off the ocean.

The sand adds to the homely atmosphere and the rustic decor gives you a no frills no fuss kind of vibe

Our waiter, Gavin, was great.
He gave us some tips on our road trip and also chatted to us, but was not a nuisance.

The drinks are served in steel mugs which adds to the rustic vibe and is something fairly unique.
The food was fresh and tasty. Wasnt too quick out the kitchen but we also did not have to wait long.
The portions were large and we felt it was great value for money.

I would definately be back, would prefer lunch where you can experience the setting better.
Absolutely loved the food. Shared calamari, delicious mussels in a creamy garlic butter and some good sized prawns was a treat. Super fresh. The view is lovely, the inside of the restaurant is however extremely hot! Was really un-enjoyable.

Barefoot on the beach. Huge portions of fish platters. Thick, glorious seafood sauce. The winner, for me, is the homemade bread with jam and, or, patè is delicious. And what a view!!!
Mariska Visser
Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere, but the restaurant is so insanely hot that we couldn't really enjoy it. Maybe a misting system or something can be looked into to provide guests some relief from the scorching JBay heat.
Leanne Kimmings
So disappointed. Lovely waitress and nice place but manager/owner so rude and was very disrespectful towards us as customers. Definitely wont go back just because of the owner. Food subpar as well.

It’s the perfect set-up for a beachside restaurant – a glorified shed that shelters a bunch of tables and benches nestled in the sand.

Given the location, seafood plays a heavy part with the edibles at Walskipper; with some more meaty options for those that like to eat from the land. The seafood is as fresh as you’d expect from an eatery that’s a couple of metres from the surf.

At the back of the restaurant is where most of the cooking takes place – a long stretch of braais (Afrikaans for bbq), heated by coals that are pre-fired in large metal bins next to the restaurant.
