Review Windmill Country Stop - Howick

Was pleasantly surprised by the stop over on the N3. Lots and lots of parking, warm atmosphere and friendly smiles greet you. The pies are phenomenal and freshly ground coffee, who can resist 😄.

This is a must stop for anyone traveling to and From Durban and Johannesburg. The freshly baked goods are delish especially the freshly baked cheese stick. Its doggy friendly and even has a separate poo parlor for your doggy.

We always stop in Harrismith despite having seen the big Windmill sign previously...this time we decided to stop and I'm so sad we didn't find it sooner. An amazing place to visit. Don't even know where to start...the food - 5 Stars (huge variety and very fresh), the bathrooms - 5 Stars (spotless and are cleaned as you walk out), kiddies play area - 5 Stars, the gardens that cater for pets - 10 Stars. Thank you to the owners for thinking of families travelling with pets. You made us feel very welcome and we love the Doggy Poo Parlour. Stopping at this rest stop was the best part of our trip home. Definitely recommend it and will only stop here in the future. Bravo and a well-deserved 5 Stars!

Ideal pitstop. Sandwiches are enormous and between 2 people you can share. Quite delicious 😋

Safe place to stop. Freshly baked food but no healthy alternatives for take away. There is a restaurant too if you want the healthier option. Great place for dogs to go potty👍

Country stop with bakery, general store and restaurants. Playgrounds for kids and pet friendly. Enjoyed the delicious pies and coffee.

Home made fresh pies, croissants, freshly baked breads, mosbolletjies and more. Pet friendly and loads off parking. Highly recommended. An absolute must pit stop when you are on the N3

One of the better places to stop on the N3. However the prices of the food is high - but the quality is good. Nice area to sit outside (even noticed a pet toilet area!). However the overall experience was spoiled somewhat by (My pet bug bear!) a bathroom attendant in the gents leaning on his mop doing nothing, with his plastic “tip bucket” out. I can’t believe that the facility managers condone/allow this - surely the guy has other responsibilities rather than to stand around expecting me to pee and pay? 😮

This place is everything it promises, and I enjoyed a wonderful and swift breakfast. I would recommend stopping here along a journey. They have quite a variety of vegetarian and vegan options. I've tried the Spinach pie with chips and gravy, which is pretty delicious, the Cauliflower burger, and the bunny chow, which was fantastic. The Mediterranean Breakfast Plate is wholesome and tasty. I also really enjoy the chocolate croissants and the farm bread.

Delicious French toast and fresh juices to name a few. We always enjoy stopping at the Windmills and the pies are a must have. Might be the best in the world!

Love the food from the garage shop to the restaurants. Nice flow from the entrance when you order and to the cashier. Would love to see more local products from the area for sale. Really cool place to stop.

What a stunning farm stall! The pies and croissants were amazing. Could not resist the mosbolletjies and sourdough bread, still warm, as we walked in the door. The staff were warm and friendly. Will be back

Coffee were super. Very very great I loved their pies but the day we were there the pies were not nice especially the pepper steak. We are always making the Windmill our stop for their pies but not again

Georgous country stop with all of your favourites to pick from. Freshly baked pies, farm baked bread with wholesome fillings of chicken and mayo and lots more. Lovely coffee station with delicious cage coffees and also has a small biltong bar with hand made flavours of biltong for those who love this iconic South African treat. They have lots of deli goodies on offer too like home makes shortbread biscuits and much much more. Great stopover. There is also a fuel station to fill up your vehicle for a nice long and enchanting journey.

Best place to stop when you need a coffee to wake you up or just to stop for a freshen up. There is ample seating and a store that provides things like pies, rolls, pastries and your everyday snacks, sodas, coffee and juices. Toilets are also safe and clean. Also a good safe place to stop and play in the snow if you have kids. There is also a small dog park for pets to have a bit of a run.

This is by far one of my FAVORITE restaurants ever! Whenever we go on holiday to the south coast we always make a stop at Windmill. The food is AMAZING! The scenery is spectacular. And their new gardens...WOW! I'd consider moving to Howick just so that I can visit the Windmill regularly;-)

The Windmill should definitely be your halfway stop from Johannesburg to KZN on the N3. They have a diverse menu of food to choose from with ample seating in the restaurant where you have a beautiful view of the planted vegetable garden and surrounding hills. They also have a dedicated doggy patch where your furry friend can recharge. There is a pantry with freshly baked goods. The coffee and pizza were really good.

This is a must see. If you are travelling on the N3 this is definitely the stop for you. They claim they have the cleanest toilets in the country and that's a fact. Place has been upgraded well and looks very appealing. Food here, whether it be take away or in the restaurant, is absolutely amazing and resonabily priced. Great stop for the kids to. Staff are very friendly and make you feel at home. Plenty of parking for those pulling trailers or caravans. Coffee is also the best here too. Can't miss it signage on the roads very clear.

The place is nice. the service is the worst I have ever experienced. Waited 20 minutes for coffee. When it eventually arrived it was ice cold. Asked the waitress if I may have a hot cup. She was not happy. I then got a hot cup of coffee. Probably put it in the Microwave. Don’t end hear. Had to get the Manager so that I could order a basic breakfast. R70. Bit of a rip off. Would expect that at the Hilton Hotel. Anyway. Asked for soft eggs. I asked how long would it take. He said about 10 min. Well 37 min later my breakfast arrived. It had to go back. Eggs like a rock. Well must say in less than 2 minutes the plate was back with soft eggs. Oops. The did not put the toast back on the plate. So on it went. All I can say never again.

On Monday we stopped for a quick coffee and sandwich. Firstly we were served after a while. The restaurant wasn’t even busy. The coffee arrived after a long while. Waited for 20 minutes and no sign of the sandwich. Called the waiter to cancel. Not even an apology or an indication that the sandwich was on its way. No one cared that a customer was dissatisfied. Service was much better when there was one restaurant.

Was there saturday and i loved the place, the whole different kitchens and the friendly staff, and the whole environment is awesome. The only pointer i would add is could you please add pictures to your menu, it helps when you wanna try something new out, although your staff did well in explaining to us, your Instagram page did wonders in helping us decide

Diens was power, ons het kerrie disse geeet en daar was chillies in en geen smaak van kerrie nie. Net die roomys was die moeite werd. Ons sal nie weer daar daar stop nie. Sorry.

We did Nottingham Road Parkrun then had breakfast here. Wow! Excellent cappucinos, yummy Parkrun special breakfast with coffee (R30), toasted sarmies and a full breakfast! The service was good (jug of water brought without asking when they saw we were hot, tired runners!!). All round good experience - with takeaway pies for supper 🖒 Thank you!

1/4 Mutton - R70 1/4 Beans - R55 Mutton curry rates amongst the worst curries I’ve ever tasted. No flavor, less salt, stale bread, fatty meat, massive bones in the bunny literally 50% of the bunny was bones and fat & the rock hard potatoes... The beans bunny exactly the same only that had 50% rock hard potatoes... Best things were the sides without the sambals and atchar without that the meal would be inedible... — eating bunny chow at The Midlands Kitchen.

Waiters dropping a otherwise great concept and great food. Standing around chatting and forfettung to bring the juice and water that was ordered

Lovely place, great coffee. Absolutely horrid pizza! Ordered the Genoa. It was not an artisan pizza more training needed.

Today we had the most amazing experience at midlands kitchen. The food was exceptional and our waitress Sne was excellent!!! I must tell you that the manager Paddington caught our eye the most. He greeted us when we walked in and seated us and didnt stop running from that moment on... from assisting clients to serving food, to helping tidy up all with the biggest smile... He is a super star in your business and if I owned a business I wouldn't let him go EVER! You can see he loves what he does..... well done to everyone Midlands Kitchen! Thankyou for the best time we will definitely be back!!!

Great restaurant conveniently located near the N3 and in the heart of the Midlands. Love the concept of the menu catering to diverse tastes. Will definitely stop here a again when traveling to Durban.

The place is not ready for the seasons rush. Nowhere you are told that you have to pay and order at a central point. Nobody delivering a service at the different delivery points where you can give in your order after paying. The claim that it takes only 15 to 20 minutes is a lie.

Great food (breakfast) , friendly staff, good service. A must stop.

A beautiful restaurant with beautiful scenery & yummy vegan options I really enjoyed the Walbur Casserole. Looking forward to coming again and trying the other food on the Vegan menu. Thank you Midlands Kitchen for catering for vegans! It is really appreciated!
