Review Caffeine - Hout Bay

Rick Spencer
New owner and host, Paul, welcomes patrons and ensures that Caffeine Coffee Bistro remains a choice eatery for a hearty breakfast or lunch at Mainstream Mall. Well-presented dishes, good coffees and munchies.

Wonderful spot to break the shopping spree for some respite and charge up the caffeine levels. A variable menu offering enough goodies for a variety of palates, and you can play a game of chess on a large open air board as you work your way through the assorted menu!

I went to Caffeine this morning for lunch and had a very bad experience the food was very disappointing and the service was terrible. We waited 10 minutes for menus, 15 minutes to get our drinks and over 30 minutes for our sandwiches. After asking for our bill we waited over 10 minutes to pay, eventually getting up and going to the counter to pay. All this when we were 3 of the 6 people in the restaurant.

Caffeine is a modest little restaurant in Hout Bay where we stopped by for a quick breakfast. There was only one lady working on the Boxing Day we went but she was really friendly and efficient. The place is a little dingy (our tables weren't clean and the interior was a bit old and dusty) but at the same time you can see the owner puts a lot of effort into making it a homely and friendly spot for regulars and strangers alike.

I ordered an Avo and Bacon Toasted Sandwhich. I found there was very little bacon and that there should have been at least two sandwhiches on the plate. However the ingredients were all fresh and tasty and they added a delicious side salad which was really nice. My boyfriend ordered the French Toast which was nice and the yoghurt accompanied it very well.

The meals weren't too badly priced either, and it's definitely a good spot to grab something quick if you're in the area.

This unassuming spot serves up some decent food. I popped in for a quick lunch and ordered the chicken mayo, which was very tasty (I loved the addition of fresh, crunchy chopped onion to the mix). I was also super impressed by the mini side salad, which at most cafes is usually a damp splodge of lettuce and tomato. This one was full of colourful beetroot and carrot and drizzled with a delish vinaigrette. I ate the lot. Overall a lovely spot for a mid-shopping-spree refuel!

Very disappointing 'Eggs Benedict' which was actually sort of Eggs Florentine without Hollandaise. Eggs cooked til hard, drenched in melted butter. Not nice at all. The cappuccino was nice and came with a wee bite of chocolate cake.
