Review The Wharfside Grill - Hout Bay

D J
Great fish and chips, excellent service, thank you J.R., you run a very fine restaurant!

Who ever put this place together is a creative genius. Everything from the lamps to the tables are made from genuine pieces of dismantled ships. We got some quick takeaways and were allowed to sit in a private area while we waited. The staff were on it, and they were pleasant to deal with. We were out of there in a matter of minutes. We also got a few off-menu sides, no questions asked!

O wow!!! I was not expecting the Squid Steaks to be so big😲Delicious and the spicy butter was tasty with a pitch of spicy. Perfect meal for one! Friendly staff, attentive to guests and relaxing atmosphere. Thank goodness I didn't order the platter for one🤭 it would've been to big of one person😅

Wharfside grill has been around for many a year and has welcome thousands of tourists. The interior of the restaurant is filled with all sorts of images and information about days gone by. The food looks delicious although we only had the fish and chips, which was quite average. It's definitely worth a visit as Hout Bay is definitely a place to visit.

An absolute must see. The decor is authentic marine memorabilia. There are rooms with a table each that can seat up to 10 peole in privacy for private events or meetings. The view is great. The ambiance is great. We only had deserts and coffee and it was great. The food dishes we saw looked scrumptious. I would recommend the place anytime.
Melani Hougaard
Really enjoyed our visit. Food was delicious and the Manager and waiters was very welcoming and friendly. Beautifully designed and decorated. A Precious part of Hout Bay's history is well displayed. Highly recommend everyone to go there.

Exquisite freahly prepared and melt in your mouth delicious seafood. Worth the price. Fast and friendly service. Beautiful views over the sea. HIGHLY recommend 👌 One of the best pieces of fish I have eaten in my life

I would be sitting there from morning till night. The feeling was as if we were on an open ship contemplating nature. The mountains embraced the light blue sky and the seagulls danced jolly, perhaps smiling at us. Beautiful ships and boats colored the little harbour. The blue water turning into greenish. White sand beach contrasting with brown and greenish rocks. I indulged in a mouth watering fish of the day and my girlfriend into a succulent king prawns with veggies. To complement our meal we ordered a chilled sauvignon blanc. Overall, the food was tasty and well served. A diligent, helpful, friendly and highly professional staff. We spent a wonderful day.

Beautiful restaurant! It feels like one is eating inside a ship. The views over the beach are magnificent. The music is lovely. The classic hake and chips was fresh and tasted very good. It was quite lovely to see the seagulls frolic outside the window.
Jeanne Burns
Oooh so yummy. What an incredible vibe, the decor is so interesting and one feels like you are on an old fashion ship, while you experience the most delicious seafood cuisine. The seagulls are opportunists always waiting for that right moment to steal your grub. I love it here. Stunning views of the beach front and parts of Chapman's Peak. A live and very busy spot. Extremely popular with locals and tourists. I love their menu, it's fun. And interesting, and well designed. Food is good value for money, service is great and just a awesome place to visit.

The seafood platter was fantastic. Every aspect. Best I've ever had. Ever.

Hout bay is a quaint harbot on the West side of the Cape Peninsula. The area has beautiful views of Table Mountain and surrounding nature. The beach is dog friendly. There are numerous fish&chips shops scattered about and a few curious shops woth handmade goods. Big seals come onto land and are fed fish from locals - you can feed them yourself and take photos with the seals for free. You can take a charter from the harbor to the nearby Seal island for R80 - adults, R40 - children.

We had a lovely time. Food and drinks were fresh and delicious. Beautiful view of the harbor. Friendly staff. We were well taken care of.

Being on holiday from Durban, we had to try the fish in Hout Bay. Mussels, baby kingklip and fish and chips, all delicious.
Laszlo Porcz
The atmosphere is cosy and it’s got a great view to the ocean. We had yummy seafood with fresh, fruity sauvignon blanc. We were there in the afternoon but by the time we left, it was getting full, so I guess it’s better to make a reservation.
William Yeo
Loved the food and service enough to return for two dinners in a row. The taste was just right, accompanied by wine well-recommended. See photos of the seared tuna and the massive fisherman’s basket!
Arne Van Heerden
Tempura prawns - couldn't taste any prawn or flavour other than batter. Calamari ok, but had better at their takeaway counterpart below. Great chips and cocktails.
Winston Hayden
Accomidating staff but overpriced. The place is not for locals. Its priced as tourist trap. Quality and portion of the food and drinks is not commensurate for the price.

I love this restaurant as it has magnificent food and views of the harbor.
My family and I always enjoy Sunday lunches at this spot and our all time favorite dishes to order are the garlic butter prawns and sole fish with fries, the seafood is always fresh and tasty.
Apart from the food and location being superb, the service is excellent as well.
I would highly recommend this spot for a relaxed Sunday lunch with the family.
Luis Cruz
Very nice food. But you guys better be careful with your belongings, a friend of my have been robbed and last Sunday (08/04/18) saw two old couple claiming that their belongings were missing! So...

This place has a great view of the sea from the upper deck and as for the food, the seafood couldn't get much fresher. The lemon butter made a very great combination with the squid and fish. and of course salmon rolls which were perfectly prepared. It was very delightful experience and a great hang out place for lunch.

Came here on a lovely warm Saturday. The lunch orders open at 12 but we got there early and was told we could order but our food would only arrive after 12. So we sat on the deck and had a lovely view of the harbour. We did not receive the complimentary bread that all the other tables seemed to get. Not sure why 🤔🤔. That would have helped seeing that we only received our food 45 minutes after 12 (and after people who arrived after us). It didn't make sense as I thought our order would be first. Anyway, I had the fish and chips which was a rather large piece of hake and overall soggy batter. The chips were terrible, tasted like it had been fried in old oil. They were not the least bit crisp. The price was also way too high in my opinion (R120). The Husband had the only vegetarian option on the menu (vegs in phyllo pastry with mushrooms and chips on the side) and enjoyed it. For that reason and the view, this restaurant gets a 3/5.
Adele Ambrose
Overpriced, food definitely not quality or tasty. Paid R115,00 for horrible fish and chips. Fish was soggy and oily. Chips was oily and old. Got sick due to the food.

Havent been to this restaurant in years. It was a beautiful midweek summers day and i really wanted a nice kingklip. Why is the service here so bad. I stood at reception and no hello from 3 waiters . One just grabbed menus and beckoned us to follow. I wasnt impressed. Seriously the waiters here have attitudes.
I had kingklip with lemon butter. The fish was great the chips horrible and oily. My wife had prawns, she asked for half chips and half rice. Nope pay extra for rice. This place is definitely not for us. Its for foreigners and thats quite evident in the prices. I felt ripped off and wont come back. Service horrible. What happened to the good south african waiters?
RaM
Amazing food and service. Highly recommended especially their grilled prawns and calamari. Very cozy place. Good for a romantic dinner. The view of the ocean is breath taking. 👍🏼👍🏼
Sivene
The best seafood I've had in all my years of living in Cape Town, fresh and a the portion are very generous. Only problem was the price tag but then again no fresh seafood comes cheap. Amazing views 👌🏽

Main reason why you should visit this restaurant is the location. The view on the harbor is just what you need on a sunny day in Hout Bay .
Second reason is the decor, beautifully resembling the interior of an old boat. The food could definitely be better. It's way too full of heavy sauces , butter , cream , mayo... Unfortunately all these ingredients cover the flavour of the fish, so my intention of having a light fish lunch was disappointed. Still I would go back, the place is just too beautiful, I'll try the meat next time.

Thursday, 13 April 2017.

My family and I visit Cape Town regularly, as there is so much to see and do, and a visit to Hout Bay is definitely worth the drive - The ocean views along the way are breathtaking! There's plenty of eatery options, and souvenir shops at Mariner's Wharf.

Having spent a few days in Cape Town, we made several trips down to Hout Bay - the first of which being the day we landed!

The Wharfette Bistro never fails to satisfy. If you're looking for traditional fish & chips, this is certainly a must! The fish is extremely fresh, not to mention delicious, and the portion of chips is as generous as it gets. The Wharfette Bistro is always busy so you can be rest assured that everything you order has been prepared on the day. Despite being busy, the service is faultless.
PS. The calamari & chips is pretty scrumptious too.

The Wharfside Grill is an alternative to the Wharfette Bistro. We had visited this restaurant on another evening, for dinner, and we ordered the Calaprawnia, the Kingklip Fillet, and the Mussels Mariniére, as well as the Salmon Roses (sushi).
Every dish was insanely fresh, and prepared to perfection. The flakey Kingklip fillet was served with chips on the side, whilst the Calaprawnia was served with rice. My personal favourite was the Mussels Mariniére, as I LOVE garlic butter.
This restaurant is also extremely busy, so I would recommend that you call in advance to book a reservation in order to avoid disappointment.

We visit Mariners Wharf every time we're in Cape Town, and it never fails to disappoint! I hope to be back soon 🍴.

Delicious calamari and amazing views of the ocean! (Great place to people-watch too) What more could a joburger visiting Cape Town ask for:)
Fernando
Very nice lunch spot when exploring Hout Bay. The place might seem like a tourist trap, but in reality food quality, service and variety are top notch.

Had oysters to start, big meaty oysters, super fresh.
For my main, I took the local kingklip, grilled with a lemon-chili butter and fries. The fish was cooked perfectly and had a very soft white meat. Very tasty!

The service was very non intrusive and the recommendations from the waiter were excellent!

Don't miss it if on a trip on Hout Bay!
Sheryll
This place is all about showcasing delicious seafood. If you visit and have anything but seafood, you and I will not get along.
They have a massive variety of tasty fish dishes and I've only had delicious meals here.
The setting is really quirky, lots of dark wood and marine themed decor. You can even sit at the captains table if there's a big group of you.
The staff can be a little slow at times so if you are in a rush you would be best to go downstairs to the fish and chip shop, but for something a bit more special, take the time and go upstairs
Pedro Leite
Great lunch! Best oysters I had in Cape Town! The prawns with garlic butter and mussels marinière were divine! Great view and very nice service! Highly recommended!
Makgalake
First of all, the views from the restaurant are amazing. The decor needs a facelift. I had the kingklip and veggies. The fish was tasty but the veggies were terrible. They used frozen veggies which were tasteless. The service was a bit slow. There's really nothing much to say.
Peter
A lovely location sitting right on the ward in Hout Bay. We sat outside and it was great. They have a nice smoking section as well nice to have places that cater to smokers. The food was fresh and tasty the oysters were super fresh. We had muscles big and juicy and the calamari was soft and juicy. Not a five star place but really nice food and great waiters.
Claire Atkinson
Came here for lunch yesterday and was very disappointed. Ordered a classic fish and chips, chips tasted stale and the fish wasn't very flavorful. Paid way to much than what we should have. On the upside, the sushi was fresh and the drinks were good. Probably won't go back though.
Gordon Pretorius
Had a great lunch with the family. Tuna steak (game fish of the day) was prepared to perfection, the calaprawnia (prawns and calamari) was perfectly prepared and the starters were great. We had the friendliest waiter and the service was great. We make a point if it to visit here whilst on our family vacation every December.
Donald Stockhall
Had lunch at Mariner's Wharf Hout Bay.
What a disappointment.
At least one of the oysters we were served were off; We brought it under management's attention, so that they could check their stock, and were told that they are spawning and that they are not off. I assure you, that was not the case.
The food was mediocre at best, from starters to mains.
For the prices they charge, there is a certain expectation on quality, and they failed dismally.
When presented with the bill, they had credited one oyster, even after sending the whole lot back.

We won't be back.
Nicola Slyper
We stopped in here for a little lunch after doing a little exploring. We were surprised to be able to get a table considering it was December! The service was friendly and pretty quick.

We decided on some sushi and it was delicious! I would definitely recommend trying it, there is very little that beats very good fresh sushi.

Many years ago I fell in love with prawns thanks to your amazing garlic butter prawns. Have not been in over a year but returned today after my search for awesome prawns only lead to expensive disappointments elsewhere. And boy oh boy was it worth it!!! The sauce was exactly as I remembered, and the chips was amazing. But most importantly, the prawns was fresh and cooked to perfection. Service was friendly and efficient even though the place was packed! A definite must for seafood
Chef Samantha Katz
Firstly Thank you for a wonderful time...
Our Prawn sushi platter was so fresh and tasty- Our Seafood platter was Amaze balls too! Our waitress was helpful and speedy with a very warm and welcoming reception area from the owner to the manager- we were greeted and made to feel at home. Ambience was buzzing and vibrant with the lovely decor and positive energy all around the establishment. Once again Wharfside always lives up to my expectations!
Mark Faesen
Was there last night. Read the reviews on Tripadvisor and was anticipating a super grilled kingklip. Unfortunately the food very mediocre. The service was unusually fast, with grilled kingklip arriving after 5 minutes only! The friendly waiters could not make up for a very disappointing meal
Ulisha Moodley
It's a family favourite but after today we were really disappointed in the service and the food. Our waiter was unfriendly and it felt as if he was doing us a favour by serving us. We all had the hake and chips. The actual hake lacked flavour, lucky it had the batter as that definitely saved it.
Lynne Marais
Not happy. Phoned last night to make a booking. They confirmed. Specifically stated wanted good view table as we are entertaining guests. Only to get there and they indicate they know nothing about the booking
Luckily had a table. Food not great
Miguel Dos Santos
This was a great night out. Came with friends and the food has never disappointed. Although slightly pricey, I think it is value for money as the food is very tasty and fresh. Portion sizes are very good. The atmosphere was warm and friendly.

Every family holiday to Cape Town was never complete without a stop at Mariner's Wharf! Nothing beats eating fresh seafood right next to the ocean, and they have the best calamari you'll ever try. I recently stopped by for lunch only to find the food just as great as I remembered. Usually calamari can tend to be a bit rubbery, but the Wharfside's calamari is melt-in-your-mouth good!
Wez_Undercover
This place is abit up and fown for me. They seat you very fast just to kind of dissappear, the view and restaurant is nice but you pay so much for not that much. If you want to impress the in laws give it a go.
Carien Moolman
We visited the Wharfside Grill as a family (13 adults) for my grandmother's 84th birthday. She's in a wheelchair with a leg that can't bend! The staff really went above and beyond to make the day special & to keep her comfortable. We had lovely views of the harbour and bay and the kabeljou was beautifully fresh & simply prepared. Thanks, Jimmy & Dorothy & team.

I'm a big fish and chips fan. Fish and chips is not a complex dish but so few places get it right. Wharfside Grill however is not one of them. They get it right every time I have been. It is very touristy so expect queues but the fish is fresh and doesn't have that thick skin on the bottom like other places. It's well worth the wait. And the view isn't too bad either
Louise Viviers
Was looking forward to a great Hake and chips and then they were out of hake so I had tuna which was good, but they smothered in in sweet chili sauce which I did not like at all. Its a pity that I cannot give it a really good review as the view is great and the service alright.

Stopped in at the Wharfside Grill on our way back to the airport after a great weekend in Cape Town. I'm a fan of the downstairs take away option but the wife insisted upstairs was better

Even though when you walk into the restaurant it feels like you have been transported back to the 80's, the service is great. The waiters come past your table every couple of minutes to check everything is good and I suspect try turn over the tables quite quickly given the amount of people visiting the place.

I went with the Calamari while the wife went with the Calamari steak. The portion sizes are pretty generous and I felt pretty full afterwards. Food was really tasty as well

My only complaint about this place is that the deck outside becomes a haven for all the smokers that can't smoke inside and you end up gagging on your food with the disgusting smoke smell. My recommendation is to rather sit inside and spare yourself an immanent death! They should really look at having a dedicated glass cage for smokers!

All in all, pretty good day out! I would recommend booking a table just to make sure you get a spot!

A gem of a location with fantastic decor that makes you feel like you are in an old world ship! We enjoyed their #Saturdayspecial #fishandcalamari with a complimentary #spier #wine. The #fish was absolutely fresh and crispy fried..one of the best iv had. The other #seafood dishes seemed a little pricey but quality looked great. Its definitely worth the amazing drive from the city.
Iman Bawa
I'm not a fan of the fried stuff but the taste of the fish was really good and you can taste that it's fresh. The chips weren't crispy but sometimes you just want a chip that is drenched in vinegar so overall not bad
Sumendra Chetty
Wharfside Grill is as unassuming as you can imagine- that is until you have a look at the menu! It's packed full with flavorful, exciting options! My sister decided on the Landlubber's Luck (a delicious phyllo pastry filled with veggies with an exotic oyster mushroom sauce) while I chose the Prawns Kigfisher- delicious! It's pricey, but worth it.
Tiyaarah Cloete
I used to frequent wharfside quite a bit, my aunts have always loved it and as a kid I loved the fact that the butter was shaped like pearls in a shell. The food hasn't changed much but it's still rather expensive by comparison to the other restaurants in Hout Bay, I'd say that everyone should try it
A Foodie Travels
The restaurant has good view of hout bay beach ,the food was amazingly delicious, the service was excellent and friendly and staff seemed to enjoy their work, chefs prepared and presented food with such care ,was worth it definitely, there was a bit of queue to get in though
The Foodie Corner
Good ol' seafood freshly caught from the great blue waters of the ocean. Grill it, serve it up with possibly the best lemon butter sauce in the world, add a healthy portion of rice, chips or a crispy, fresh side salad and you're set up for a spectacular afternoon of wharf side dining! Catering for both young and old, Wharfside Grill is definitely the place to go if you're looking for a relaxing family lunch that offers value for money.

Let me get straight to the point - the bread, the seafood and the lemon butter sauce. Those are the things that makes this restaurant shine out from the rest. The bread is freshly baked seed loaf, which you can actually purchase at the bakery below the restaurant. Moist, fresh and simply delicious, you could literally make a whole meal of just that bread!

We've been to Wharfside a couple of times, and sharing a greek salad for starters is always a winner. Crispy lettuce, chunky pieces of feta and a delicious variety of salad dressings, there's simply nothing I can fault here.

When ordering mains, you basically can't go wrong with any of the seafood dishes. Kingklip, sole, prawns, calamari, lobster - you name it, it'll be delicious and cooked to absolute perfection. Be warned though, this restaurant is definitely more of a seafood kind of place. So if you're more into your red meat, this may not be the place for you. Honestly, their sirloin isn't that great and you'll probably be better off ordering the chicken. Or sucking up your preferences and ordering the dreaded fish instead.

As I mentioned before - the lemon butter sauce... TO DIE FOR!!! Very rich, but well worth exerting yourself by ordering extra. Over fish, prawns... Anything really!

For the sweet tooth, I can recommend the chocolate brownie. Tried the cheesecake as well, but for my preferences there was too much filling and not enough base. And the cream tasted a bit too cheesy for my liking. I'd also recommend sharing a dessert since the portions are quite large.

It's a very busy restaurant, and understandably so - perfect location, great food, nice vibe, beautiful scenery, family friendly... It attracts people from pretty much all walks of life. So of course expect the service to be a bit slow during busy times. But to be honest, they cope surprisingly well under the pressure of large crowds. A special mention to out waitress (Barbara) who took extra special care of us on this particular Mothers Day lunch.

Overall, a good, solid choice of restaurant and a must visit for any seafood lover!
Jaco
Late breakfast at Wharfside consisting of Deepfried Hake for me and the Calamari and Prawn combo for my companion. It is an order, pickup and eat outside kind of eatery, so it is difficult to rate the service, but the staff is definitely not overly friendly. The food is good, but maybe a little pricey. The best part of the experience is definitely the view onto Houtbay, so maybe that is what you pay for. Will rather eat upstairs at proper restaurant (same company, but better everything else).
Samantha Katzen
Went in for a relaxed late lunch. We were seated straight away, but it took about 25 minutes before a waiter took our drink order, or even acknowledged we were there.

Still the food was excellent, I got the mussels, seriously some of the best mussels I've ever had, it was quite a lot so it got a bit rich, may have to share next time :)

My boyfriend got the fish and chips, really crisp and tasty, yummy fries!!

Its quite pricey, but will definitely be back.
Lara
Best food I've had in a while. Calamari was done to perfection, hake and chips to die for and prawns are a little cut from heaven. Even the waiter was welcoming... Definitely coming back...
Megan Brook
Good food, historical building and lovely staff. A great experience. My wife couldn't stop raving about the seafood curry, and she isn't a fan of seafood or curry. So it must've been good!
Martie Vosloo
This is a building of history and passion for perfect food. Its a treat to eat year and enjoyed the interesting decor and amazing food......
Jana Lorraine Pretorius
The Wharfside Grill is probably one of my all-time favourite restaurants, and being there is always a nostalgic experience. The rich seafood dishes, cabin-like restaurant interior, and seaside location all work together to provide a wonderful dining experience perfect for special occasions. A point of critique, though, is that the general quality of the meals has been better in the past (which is a little disappointing considering the price range), and it is often the case that certain menu items are not available. Still, as a popular tourist attraction, it is well worth a visit for any local Capetonian as well.
Ashleigh Rose Wentzel
What a great restaurant. The atmosphere and decor set as the deck of a sailing ship with all wooden furnishing and great nautical theme. Close to the beach means it's a great place for a meal after a stroll on the beach.
Tara Kearley
Overall great experience. Our waitresss was one of the best waitresses I think we have had before, she was so friendly and helpful so I'd say their customer service is top notch. The decor of the restaurant is very interesting with the whole ship effect going on and the presentation of the food is great. I had the wayward wrench cocktail and I got to keep my glass which was awesome. My boyfriend had the fish and chips which he found to be pretty average, but I had the mussels in a creamy garlic sauce and it was a huge portion of mussels and the dish was absolutely delicious.
Christy
The restaurant was very pricey and in my mind our meal was not as good as I expected, great views and friendly staff though! The next time we visited however... The take away below the restaurant although seating was limited, the food was absolutely superb... We were 13 adults who ate a variety off the menu... Everyone of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal, served in neat little take away boxes... I would drive back to Hout Bay just for their perfectly cooked, well portioned box of calamari...
Cameron Jody Robey
Presentation of food and everything else was spectacular , really awesome experience the prawns were delicious calamari excellent. The sauce that was in the prawns had a decent amount of garlic was amazing . Staff are all friendly
Shane Van Der Byl
Dined at wharfside grill. Menu limited and food pricey. Ordered ocean fiesta and I was very disappointed . There was no party in my mouth. The grilled fish was basted with sweet chili sauce which was placed on cut baby potatoes which was an attempt to make fish and chips fancy @ cost of R150.
Temcki_tinx
Very pricey for the locals but the foreigners might not have a problem paying which I assume is their main target.

Good quality food (you get little for what you are paying which is disappointing) which tasted great and prepared to perfection.

The food is fresh and can be enjoyed inside or outside on the deck overlooking houtbay with seagulls flying around.

Great service even for a very busy restaurant. We had to wait 45min to an hour for a table and initially we were quite shocked when we saw the prices but like I already mentioned, you get quality (not quantity), good tasting food. The waiter regularly checked in and made sure we were taken care off.

It was a really enjoyable experience but I recommend you work it in your budget if you think of visiting this restaurant.
Kirsty
Rather pricey for the food quality. Lovely setting and good service. Fish and Chips was not available which was the reason we came here and calamari was bland.
Alan Tucker
Eaten here many times before. Nice ambiance. Fantastic service. Extensive seafood menu. Good value for money. Loads of parking. Will definitely be back.
FredMono
There were four of us and we all had a good meal. I had the chowder for starters it was great just the right amount of spice and seafood pieces loved it. We all had the mussels as a main and were not disappointed. They only had health bread and a nice french bread or ciabatta would have been better to soak up the garlic creamy sauce of the mussels. Great service even though they we filled to capacity thanks to our waitron.
Monet Molman
Went with high expectations... a bit dissappointed. We ordered mussels, fish and chips, calamari and chicken breast. Mussels were amazing, chips were great but the calamari and chicken was very average unfortunately :(
Rashmi Gosai
This place has a variety of dishes. We went for the traditional fish and chips along with my vegetarian dish- it has a divine mushroom sauce which I just could not get enough of! The setting is great, the seaside on the one side and the harbour view on the other.. you have to come here on your next visit to Cape Town
Carl Thomas
Popped in yesterday for supper. At first the menu looked a bit pricy....but they are situated on Hout Bay harbor lots of tourists and of course the view. We had milkshakes to drink and my wife had a champagne and pineapple juice cocktail. The milkshakes were very runny and tasted like nesquik.

I had the fish and chips and my wife had the calamari and rice. Considering I had to pay 99 rand for hake and chips I something better. Portion was very small and the hake batter was bland. It was fresh though. The calamari was also nothing special....note they do not offer grilled calamari. The rice was really bland, in fact we added salt to it which is something we generally do not do.

I am really underwhelmed by this place. Would have been been better to just get take away fish and chips downstairs (half the cost, double the portion and better tasting). In future I'd rather try Dunes or Lookout Deck. Julie-Anne Thomas
Marc Bernitz
This place looks so tacky, but it all makes sense when you get your food. The branding just works as part of the experience, and this place really does need to be experienced - sitting on the deck overlooking the beach, the incredibly friendly service, the freshest fish cooked perfectly. You can really relax and take in the air here. The wine list is well thought out with a few good value gems. Prices are reasonable but not cheap. Best for lunch so you can enjoy the view. Get out of the Waterfront and admire the drive through Camps Bay, Bakoven, and Llandudno on the way.
Victor
Beer is cold, fish and chips hit the spot, service was a tad slow, views were great from the upper deck, everything you would expect from a harbor eatery. Met expectations.
Hugo Van Vuuren
This has been my favourite seafood restaurant for many years. Love seafood and always try new places everywhere I go but I just have to return to Wharfside grill in Hout Bay. Do sit out on the deck in summer. Beautiful view, great atmosphere. They also have quality craft beer on the menu. Love this place!

Trade Day and we ended up in Hout Bay #upsideofjob !!
Meet and Great 10/10
Service 10/10
Food 10/10
I had the Yellowtail and Veggies ( bit too much lemon butter sauce ) however was delicious.
My dining partner aka boss aka pays the bill got a little carried away ....also ordered the Yellow Tail with "extra's" - including Giant Prawns ( mini "lobsters" - french accent ) @ a whopping R95 a creature .....
Hence my rating is not 5 - I know that CT is Euro "befok" BUT it is no excuse to overcharge ......ok he should have asked and he didn't blink when he paid the bill but come on .....it's a bit excessive .....
I will be wary when ordering again - the bill for 2 for only mains and NO wine was R672 ( ouch ) !!!!
Illona Rogers
Fantastic place in Hout Bay to grab a bite to eat. They are very busy so there is always a queue and seating may be a problem so it's best to have one person order while someone else searches for a table.
Their portions are big, the presentation is good, the fish is fresh and their batter is tasty.
When visiting the harbour this is the place to stop!
Darryl Linington
My wife and my daughter came here for dinner; however, after seeing the ridiculously priced menu we decided to stay for a drink. The waiter brought bread, and delivered it to the table... After he heard we were staying for a drink he quickly grabbed the bread and butter and returned it to the kitchen. We found this to be extremely rude and unprofessional. Won't be dining here... Ever! Your waiter should be ashamed of himself.
Ritesh Bhattacharya
Terrific set up and good food are good points of this restaurant. However over the top price makes it touristy trap. Overall good experience and recommended. Please do not miss the Large prawns.
Candice
This was the 2nd time at this restaurant. As coloured patrons there ,we were treated very differently to the white ones. We waited a while for service . And once we did get service the lady couldn't get rid of us quick enough, bringing the bill without us even asking for it . The food was sub par. Brownie with ice cream was nice. Will never go back again.
Charné Banger
The bottom is a take-away and the top is a restaurant. First let me start by saying this place is pricey. If it weren't for my boyfriend and I taking our Korean friends around Cape Town we probably wouldn't have eaten here by ourselves.

If you look past the price *gulp* them you can enjoy the seafood and man this place makes amazing seafood! My boyfriend and I shared the platter for two and it was so delicious. We got the lobster added to the platter even though I'm not a big lobster fan (I prefer prawns) and later regretted the decision because it's just not as great as everyone makes it out to be - I don't get the lobster hype? Just my personal preference.

It's a nice restaurant to take visiting family or friends for an experience but not a good place for an intimate date although the view is stunning and when the sunsets, it's beautiful. If it weren't for the great food I probably wouldn't go back.

Loved the seafood platter here, there was an overload of rice but that's okay, it was creamy and flavoursome. They have the option of lobster with the platter if you want something fancy. Lobster and oysters were pretty great but slightly pricey.

This review is an interesting one to write. Until I saw on Zomato, I had no idea that the upstairs and downstairs were the same restaurant. Upstairs has a balcony and is a bit classier with service from a waiter, whereas downstairs is a takeaway type restaurant with long tables to eat at. We started off upstairs by ordering drinks and quickly realized that this place was a bit pricey...R100 for fish and chips. So, we paid for our drinks and were unfortunately met with a rude response from our waiter. Downstairs we enjoyed calamari and chips for half the price and a more enjoyable vibe. I can't believe that these are the same place...c'est la vie...we got our food and enjoyed the vibe regardless!

We made it at 9pm and they were great even though kitchen closes at 9h30. Great service.ambience was warm despite the chilly evening. Great seafood.
Will definitely come again.

Food, music, beautiful weather and the beach right here!! This place has it all and the food is something to recommend!! Very happy with this service!

This is a nice place with a nice view. We were expecting traditional fish and chips and got way more, at a price! The line fish was incredible..

Hout bay was busy as one would expect on a sunny day. We found ourselves at Wharfside grill upstairs with a beautiful view of the beach. For starters we opted for the chowder which hit all the right notes. Mains was good old fish and chips which was cooked perfectly. The decor inside was all nautical themed and added nicely to the atmosphere. Will definitely return soon.

Pub-style establishment with all the nautical theme bells and whistles. Enjoy fresh seafood without the pretense, with a beer. If you're into that. Sit upstairs overlooking the harbour and bay - great views.

Apart from the view, there is not many good things to say. Service is very bad. The fish and chips is the only good item on the menu. Other dishes are tasteless, overpriced and this is a typical tourist trap.

What a pleasant outing it was visiting Mariners Warf, we were treated with very friendly service and had the most spectacular view of the barbour, the crayfish is mouth watering, tender and absolute someting to try.

Best calamari I've had since I started eating seafood. It's an authentic fisherman's place, awesome view of the sea and some really nice houses on the hillside. You should go there.

Bustling with tourists from near and far, this was one of the highlights of our trip around the Cape. Just plain awesome seafood on offer - in quality and quantity. A must visit.

Such good food, ideally located however inside and not on a balcony and able to enjoy the sunshine. Service was up to scratch and food is value for money
The only restaurant at which I will ever eat fish. Their food is a proper treat, our family has been going for years a day other than some poor service once in a blue moon, we're always impressed with our food. Yummy.

I'm reviewing the downstairs take-away and not the upstairs Grill.

We ordered the calamari and chips and we were in for a treat. The calamari was meltingly soft and the batter that it was deep fried in reasonably seasoned. The chips were piping hot and as another reviewer below said, proper South African "Slap Chips".

A very enjoyable meal with the beautiful clear blue skies, not to crazy breeze blowing and a trio of kite-surfers providing the entertainment.

What a spectacular dining experience. We arrived in time for sunset and sat on the balcony to watch it. Such a sweet spot and the food is out of this world. The mussel starter and the sea food curry come highly recommended!

Great service but average food at big prices. R179 for a surf n turf which you can buy at John Dorys' for R110 and it doesn't look or taste different. Will probably not come here again.

Perfect place for fish and chips on any day!

Even with the cloudy, rainy weather today, my hubby and I took a drive to Hout Bay to the harbour. After a perfect walk along the harbour wall, and a tour at the fish market, we went upstairs to the restaurant.

Even though the decor makes you feel you are on a ship and with all the yummy food options, we opted for the downstairs take-away fish and chips option since it is what you do when you go to the Hout Bay harbour.

The fish and chips(soft, fresh and crispy and what is not to love about vinegar take away chips) were amazing and they have heaters to chase of the cold and with the amazing views it is an amazing option for fish and chips day!

The only negative - my hubby bought a Windhoek light which didn't taste nice and when looking at the expiring date, it already expired May 2014....

We were staying at a lovely service flat right on the bay with a great view of the bay and Chapmans Peak. Its away from Cape Towns crowd and hustle and bustle.Having heard a lot about the Grill and our unanimous choice of a Sea Food dinner we made our way on a rather wet and windy evening to the Warfside Grill. Typical warf side place similar ti that in San Francisco and the V&A in Cape Town proper. It waqs pretty crowded but cosy and a happy ambience.
The starters of Calamari and Prawn tempura got our juices flowing. An assortment of dishes arrived in about 15 minutes. The Hake for which the place is well known was delicious,.soft with just the right texture and flavour. The lobster were meaty surprisingly as they looked a bit small ,but really yummy !!!The mixed grill of seafood and some red meat was a sellout and disappeared fast as we all tucked in.
The menu has interesting and substantial offerings BUT sorry Vegetarians not a place for you !!!All in all a great place and good food by any standards. If youre driving to THE CAPE and beyond a great place to stop ,relax and tuck in.

One of my favourite places in Cape Town.

We don't always eat at the actual restaurant but choose to order from the take-away downstairs, take our food and go and sit at the pier to share my chips with the seagull's...

This place makes the best Hake and Chips in town, the hake is so crispy and tender that it actually melts in your mouth the chips are the most perfect traditional 'slap chips" you could ask for. It has a wonderful touristy atmosphere and on a perfect summers day one of the best spots in Cape Town.

If you haven't been here then you are missing out!

Part of the Mariners Wharf harborfront emporium in Hout Bay the Wharfside Grill is a well known tourist attraction perfect for families, friends and more than friends. Right next to the beach with spectacular views of the mountains and ocean you can expect to sneak a peak of the occasional whale or dolphin in season. The food is amazing serving everything from lobsters, prawns to fisherman's baskets but the real winner here is the hake and chips, they just know how to do it right. The restaurant itself is filled with maritime ambiance and memorabilia everywhere you look. To really enjoy Mariners Wharf I suggest you make a day of it, there is tons to see and do.
