Review Spiro's - Hout Bay

Katharine Eve
We had a very pleasant, relaxing evening sitting outside at Spiro's. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and our waiter was very attentive. From previous reviews, we thought we might be overwhelmed with children but the outside area is well designed to cater for all. We had the pita platter for 2 a which was fabulous and even my husband was full!

Often stop at Spiro's as a family on the way back to Noordhoek. Great restaurant for a family dinner. Kids always like it and even though the play area seems simple the kids for whatever reason love it, they also have someone keeping an eye on the kids so you can relax. Service has always been excellent with experienced waiters who really seem to enjoy their working environment.

Super friendly staff with very yummy food.

Typical Greek fare. Staff friendly, good service, restaurant a little old but still very functional. Parking facilities good - music appropriate, smoking section far from the usual patrons, veg options not bad. Prices about average for the area and season. Worth a visit if Greek fare is your thing.

Great Greek food, owner has a great personality and mostly at the restaurant. In the middle of beautiful Hout Bay, few minutes walk to the beach and on the foot step of a famous Chapman's Peak Drive. Best to be enjoyed outdoors sitting area on the nice sunny day that Cape Town offers plenty.

Had a great authentic Greek dining experience at Spiro's. Feels like u at a taverna in Greece and the decor matches.Food is awesome. Nice menu to choose from. Great vibes, staff ever so friendly and attentive. Spiro, the owner takes time to chat to the customers. Thx for an amazing time. Will definitely be back!!

I like going to Greek Street because you get good value for money food - tasty and looks the part too. Service is always friendly and efficient. Nice variety on the menu and options to sit outside, inside or at the bar. Informal, relaxed and has a positive vibe.

Is it possible that the Gyros at Spiro's are better than the gyros in Greece? It's my own opinion, but I believe they are, yes. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is great and the staff are superb. This is definitely a must for the whole family!

My all time favorite Greek restuarant. We go there all the way from the Northern Suburbs. There food is amazing. And the most yummiest desserts. Always feel relaxed and welcome there.

To Spiro and Staff, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you and your amazing staff for an awesome, amazing and fantastic New year eve party. It is one of the best new years party that myself and my guests from Johannesburg have ever attended. From the fantastic food, to your incredible staff, thank you for the memorable experience. To DJ Chris who kept the dance floor pumping the whole nite, you were amazing. You took us down memory lane from the 80's to the present day. Thank you, thank you and thank you again for making our evening a magical, memorable New Year. Can't wait for the next one.

Really good food, albeit slightly pricey. Great servoice, and a very kind and dedicated owner and a great family restaurant. Spiro's is a part of Hout Bay and is a must-visit for anyone spending the day in Hout Bay. 4 stars.

Spiro's is my best Greek restaurant in Cape Town. We were met at the door with delicious smells & invited into a warm, homely atmosphere. After a good chat, much scanning of the menu & a few drinks, we asked Spiro to give us the full 9 yards of Meze & Greek cuisine. We simply could not decide. The spread brought our way was absolutely authentic & diverse as it is in the Motherland. We only left that night because they were closing. I will be getting my Greek Food fix @Spiro's once a month for sure.

Situated in a rather relaxed area this café offers excellent food and a tranquil atmosphere for lunch. It's great for a catch-up with friends and or family, and is also pet-friendly.

Great little place had a lovely chillaxing tapas platter for two

First time last night...lovely ambience, tasty food, amazing cappuccinos, first ‘adult’ restaurant that both my sons loved. Such a lovely treat meeting Spiro, one of those genuine humans x

Spiros has met with my most favourable approval. Authentic Greek food to die for ! Consistently delicious, and always friendly and efficient service. Lots for the kids to do also. Spiros has become our home away from home !
Kim Thorne
Very disappointing. Had a very average meal and very average service too
Steve Belcher
great food, great atmosphere and a great resident owner too!!!!

Stunning in the back area - if youve ever been to Greece, youll think you are there! Greek music and glass of wine and taramasalata and the Greek salad and Greek lamb and tzaziki and I can go on and on..... we love it!

As a Greek, I am in constant search for a good Greek restaurant in South Africa. Normally, I am disappointed. It was not the case at Spiro’s. The lamb gyro open pita was excellent. I would have preferred pork as the meat served (this would be closer to what you would get in Greece). Despite this, the way the food was presented, the taste and especially the accompanying Greek salad was spot on. Closed my eyes and I could have been somewhere in Greece. The desert menu was also very authentic and very very tasty. Would recommend.

Great atmosphere! Staff was attentive and friendly - food was delicious! Beetroot hummus for the win! The Kataifi Ek Mek was amazing. Really great, Greek and fusion food options!

Excellent service and good atmosphere, but the food was a big let down- the schwarma was smallest we've ever had, very little sauce, same with the vegan falafel which was dry with hardly any sauce - and desert (frozen yoghurt with cherry syrup and pistachios- sounded promising...) was tiny with almost invisible pistachio 'dust' sprinkled on a board next to the bowl. To us greek food needs to feel plentiful but unfortunately it really felt like they were keeping portions to the bare minimum

Unbelievably great seafood platter!!! Probably the best seafood I have had in years!! Beers are cold and had a really great Irish coffee for dessert! Good service from Mike too!! Will be back to try other menu items for sure!
I had heard so many good reports about Spiros but got to go there with my wife for the first time this afternoon for lunch. What a lovely , relaxing spot with a great calm feeling sitting outside on a sunny afternoon. The menu is typical Greek! My wife just felt like a salad so she ordered the main GREEK SALAD which came as expected....you can't go wrong with a greek salad and she enjoyed it. I opted for the Beef Gyro with Chips but at R120 I found the pita it came in very small so while it was really good and delicious I feel you get better value at other greek places like Mykonos in Sea Point where for the same price you will literally get almost double the Pita size. Nevertheless I was satisfied and will definitely return as there are a few more items on the menu I would like to try.

Came here with my boyfriend on a beautiful sunny day. All the restaurants were packed with it being holiday season. We got a table and were served with nothing but smiles and efficient service that was not over intrusive.
He had the Biftekia which was out of this world. I had the Lamb Gyro which was also delicious. We shared a Broccoli and Zucchini veg side which is so nicely tossed in lemon juice and olive oil.

Very reasonable prices as well and portions are big. We will definitely be back.

Quality of food was not good. Halloumi was rubbery and chewy. Food served cold. Tzatziki tasted like watered down yoghurt. Service not great. And to top it off the owner argues with me about the food served. Really unimpressed. WON’T be returning.

Nice and comfortable, there is a kind of homey feel at Spiro’s. Food wasn’t bad but not great either. Had to mix with people drinking and dancing while having dinner. However, overall a pleasant experience.

I cant believe that Spiros has a low rating in Zomato. Not only is it probably the best Greek food in town, but the atmosphere, the service and the vibe make it a place to get to especially if you have kids. The place is cosy and inviting while not being too kitch and the food is amazing and what great specials. I would highly recommend the Gyro (pronounce Y-ro) if you want a reasonably priced meal that is packed with flavour. Thanks Spiro and your team for giving us a great place to hang out

Hit and miss at Spiros. A few years back it was incredible value for money and great food. Now it's a hangout for touchy-feely couples looking to spice things up. Food is has gone to sub-standard conditions. Meh.
Joy Termorshuizen
I specifically requested a quiet table ! Obviously a mistake since they gave me the noisiest place in the entire place. My rump steak was tough. That will be my second and last visit.
DeShaigRay
The lamb souvlaki was moist and tasty accompanied by crispy chips and creamy tzatzki. The flame-grilled pork chops, basted with olive oil and oregano was a tad dry and the pork chops was too thinly sliced for the price of this dish. However, the mushroom sauce was amazing.

Visited again and was disappointed with food of takeaway quality at top restaurant prices , think the nice setting under the trees attracts the customers plus the kids play area seems to work as a draw card ? Had my last visit Spiro , locals wanting Greek / Med good can do a lot better elsewhere
Fried Onion
Lived up to everything that the reviews said. Friendly, welcoming staff; the food was fine without being memorable (we had mixed mezze); the only drawback was the numerous and very persistent flies giving us their undivided attention.

Spiro's is most probably my favorite place to go in Hout Bay. Everyone is so friendly, it is so vibrant and the food is absolutely amazing.
We are very regular customers and we will continue to be for a very long time!
There's a lovely little kiddies area with lots of different things for them to do while you enjoy some time out.
The inside is very cosy and authentic and in the evening there is always music in the courtyard. There is also a few flat screens to watch the rugby and other sporting events when they are on.
There are specials from Monday to Thursday and they truly are a great value for money. It's difficult to recommend anything as EVERYTHING I have had has been top quality and absolutely delicious!
I recommend this place to everyone looking for some amazing Greek food!

Been here a few times... Nothing I can say about this place that could be negative. Warm ,happy atmosphere. Staff is very nice ..cute play area for the kids. Nothing better than a sunday drive to Hout Bay and to stop for lunch. Stuffed calamri my ultimate favourite meal.
Barbara Ann Hall
If Greek food is what you're looking for then this is your restaurant! Service was friendly and efficient and the menu offered everything that a lover of Greek food could wish for. Casual, unpretentious and cost effective with indoor/ outdoor seating.
Janet
The staff are Always friendly and willing to accommodate. The food is great, especially their hand cut chips!! Great pub in the back too!!

After having a very miserable experience at a nearby establishment I am very happy to give this review. The service was IMPECCABLE. the food was AMAZING and the margarita was on par with my standards. Will definitely be back with no hesitations.
Chris
Love the authentic food here, favourites are the lamb Souvlaki, which is awesome. I tried the pork ribs on my last visit, which were excellent. They weren't heated through initially but after going back on the grill they were just perfect, pretty close to the best I've had. Our waiter wasn't that attentive, seemed distracted by the cricket on the Tv. There are often a lot of kids around, it doesn't worry me but could be off putting for some. I recommend it.
Christine Buchanan
I have not yet even had a meal and feel like walking out
1. The tables inside and out are sticky to the touch - yuk! The excuse is that they have just been varnished and they are still wet.
2. There are no signs indicating smoking and non-smoking areas in flagrant contravention of by-laws. We had to move tables twice to avoid unpleasant cigarette smoke. Apparently patrons are allowed to.light up outside so we eventually moved inside on a gorgeous summer day.
If they cannot get their act in order they won't be seeing us again. If I could give a minus rating I would. I feel nauseous and my appetite has gone.

The Best in Hout Bay, great vibe, awesome tapas lots of variety. Reasonably priced, best mojitos in the Bay, my regular local hang out!
Kate Grace Dalais
It was my first time eating at Spiros, and the experience was amazing. The lamb pita (gyro?) was delicious and the chips are now top of my "Best Chip" list. Will definitely be heading back to taste all the other tasty meals on their Greek menu 👏

As a family we have been going to Spiro's since they opened. We love it. The service is always 5 star and the food tasty. Great atmosphere especially when there are birthday parties and rugby matches. Wonderful owner who is always bubbly and happy.

So I went to spiros for the first time last night, and it was aweaome. The waiters were really informative and attentive we sat outside in the back the atmosphere was warm friendly and relaxed. I had the moussaka and it was delicious! All in all it was a great dining experience. I urge you if you are in the area to pop in and see for yourself. I saw a few negative comment reviews but I really dont know how you can feel negative about a place like spiros because it really is fantastic.
Tammy
I don't know why Spiro's has such a low rating. We went for a birthday celebration and had an amazing evening. The waiter's were great, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was lovely and plates were even brought out for breaking to celebrate. Spiro is very welcoming and made sure everyone had a great time.

Never eaten at Spiro's before, although the food looks great, often go there for quick drink or two at the back by the bar. Bar staff always very friendly and helpful, always a nice vibe and happy customers, also a good selection of music for everyone
We dined at Spiros for Fathers Day. When I called to book in the week before, I asked if there were any Father's Day specials (because I had heard there were) and was told bluntly no there are none. Anyway, we booked anyway. Upon arrival we were informed by the manager (thank goodness someone told us) about the Father's Day special. I asked to be seated near the fireplace, which we were (sort of) but what bothered me the most was the constant sprinting up and down of children from the loo, play area to various tables around us. It was so noisy and annoying, I couldn't quite settle and the rest of our table were looking at me quite confused as to why I booked at Spiros! I then asked for a quitter table as this was just terrible where we were seated. The manager was helpful and showed us a better table (not drastically better) where we moved to. The toilets are unisex and open directly onto the restaurant, its so impersonal as is to share 2 cubicles with either sex (why have this?) and then you can expect the door to be opened while you are washing your hands/looking in the mirror etc and bang the entire restaurant is watching you! Terrible...
Upon our orders being taken, I found the waiters so unhelpful and useless on their knowledge of the various dishes. If you haven't ordered Greek before, it definitely is going to happen that patrons are going to ask for education on the dishes and advise on what is good to eat! When we did see our waitress we had to ensure we ask her all we needed to know, because we may see her in the next hour again! I eventually just chose anything. My boyfriend took advantage of the Fathers day special and when he asked the waitress what the beer was that came with the steak/ribs, our waitress responded a 300gram beer (really?).
The food arrived and it was tasteless and felt like mass produce. Nothing great at all. All around our table, no one enjoyed their meal! So I really regret ever booking here and I had heard people rave about this place, really? Service isn't good, staff seem uninterested and uneducated on the food that Spiros serves, the food is tasteless (yes I bet Spur serves better food!). Won't ever be back...
Great food. Best lamb chops ever. Love the Kleftiko, Dolmades and don't forget to try the Spanakopita. Great ambiance. In the summer very romantic outside. Great service always.

Had a great lunch with friends today at Spiro's. Food was great but service a bit slow. Kids loved it with great kids room & outside play area.
Great family venue

I've been going to Spiro's for a long while and never felt the need to voice and opinion as it was always great and they are very popular. So during load shedding my boyfriend and I decided to go out and eat rather than wait for the power to return and then cook. Spiro's being walking distance from our home we decided to go there. I had high hopes but of late every time we've been the food quality have gone down. It lacks flavour and that beautiful Greek touch. Really wish they could bring it back up to the old.
Daphne Le Roux
This is not a bad venue but food is not so good.

I heard so many positives about Spiros, so decided to give it a go. Service friendly enough, and the place looks very authentic. The food, unfortunately, was not great. Will give it another go, but there are better Greek offerings not too far from Hout Bay

Kids had an amazing time, dress up section was fun for them and platter for two for us was good value for money and being able to sample different menu items. #zomatovalentine

New Year's Eve Dinner Disappointment - we felt very disappointed with our overcharged meal at Spiro's on New Year's Eve 2014. It was a set menu which consisted of a decent starter, an average main course which had a lot of starch, and a "dessert" of water melon, grapes and a slice of apple - all for a hefty price of R400 per person, drinks not included. Felt completely ripped off by such a small town restaurant.
Michael
Was heading through Houtbay when we encountered traffic. Regrouping we looked around for an alternative restaurant to eat.
Thats when we saw Spiros. No one was sitting outside but given the fact that the wind was blowing we decided to give it a try.
Very nice quite restaurant with that Mediterranean feel. Individual rooms with tables and an outside courtyard out back. One whole room was dedicated to ankids play room with dress up costumes, games and a tv.
We ate off the Meze menu and it was fantastic. we had 6 different ones and i would recommend all of them. Possibly some of the best Meze greek food i have had. The tables around us all seemed to be complimenting the food.
The service was good and we were visited by the owner twice during our meal. It is very child friendly and highly recommended.
Henri Martens
Nice photo's but that's were it stops.

Really bad experience as service is on existent unless you summon your waiter.
Food was horrible in every aspect that is it tasted microwaved and old (Frozen) and was completely tasteless.

I did complain during the course of the sitting but it clearly fell on def ears.
Only when i wrote the complaint on the bill (Waiter probably complained to the manager about the tip) did we see the manager as we got up (The only time he was visible the whole sitting) and he looked really confused as if nothing happened.

I don't really write reviews but hopefully they read this an learn and improve.
I can honestly say I will never go back just purely because of how everything was dealt with.
The no care attitude must really stop in the hospitality industry.
Abe Pieterse
Came here for a late afternoon lunch. Nice looking restaurant but food was average. Lamb chops were no better than home chops and line fish (kingklip) was ok. You can't say the food is bad, it's just not great.

Best Greek food I've had in the whole of SA! Loved every bite! Brilliant ambience and Friday nights rock!
Lee Hartman
Awesome place. A favorite weekend lunch spot. Love the pork chops.

When we heard that there was a Greek restaurant in Hout Bay, we immediately had to try it. Meze seems the perfect style of food, when visiting this quaint seaside town.

However this restaurant doesn't quite fill the gap. Diverse offering as far as the menu goes but everything we tried was average, at best.
