Cheynes is such a little gem!! From the minute you arrive you are made to feel like you are surrounded by your closest friends..the staff are friendly, attentive, smart, very knowledgeable on the food, ingredients and especially the cocktails!'there training is increbioe ans by far the best service of anywhere I have been in Cape Town!
Each dish on the menu is amazing (I have tried all except the fish which my partner has tried and loves!) for such a small mouthful you can get up to 15 ingredients per dish.
Every bite is pure perfection with last nights dinner being the best we have ever had there although it is consistently amazing.
I would recommend the Mumbai Beef, crispy pork and quail eggs, Beef sliders, scallops, short ribs. For a nice finisher to the evening try one of cheynes special Espresso Martini!!

Its beautiful tasteful food and a place we never miss to visit, service is good and we wish them all the best for the quality that never fail
Just had the most amazing dinner at Cheyne's. Very friendly and welcoming staff, beyond amazing food and a lovely atmosphere. We recently moved to Hout Bay and we've just found one of the best reasons to live here! We will be back very soon! (Especially for that peanut butter shake!)
This is an outstanding experience. The food is beyond description & the service is fantastic. I love the 4 dish concept as you get to taste some of the various dishes on the menu
Phenomenal food, great atmosphere and marvelous service (thanks Blessing). You will not find food of this quality at this price in Cape Town.
Will definitely be back!
We had Asian Tapas at Cheyne's. The most awesome food we have ever had anywhere in the world. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
Popped in Cheyne's in Hout Bay for lunch today. My oh my, never a disappointment. The food was sublime and the service nothing short of charming. We had Grilled Prawn Risotto, Grilled Chalmar Beef, Salmon Poke Bowl and Hot Wings. We seriously thought we would continue gorging as the afternoon slipped by but as the food settled we found ourselves replete. Will have no choice but to return to savior more of this ridiculously delicious food.
The best around, with diverse dietary choices at superb value for money. And excellent staff, and oh damn the cocktails... Shhhhhhh...

Thanks to our good friends, we had the privilege of discovering Cheynes last night. Every dish was cooked to perfection, with the most incredible flavours. Well worth the huge bill!
Sensational! The R250 per person summer special allowing the diner to pick any 4 dishes is incredibly fair and generous. Everything top class!! Wow what an experience, one I'll never forget! Thanks to all the amazing friendly staff as well.
The service was super amazing, the food was ALL the above! A great selection of little meals and flavors that are sure to satisfy any and all palates. Definitely worth a visit! A job super well done 👍🏾 An experience of a lifetime
I am so glad I got to experience this dining establishment . I went with family and I was not disappointed. The decor was so unique and interesting and the seating was so comfortable. My family and I decided to do the “tapas” selection where you get 4 dishes for R280. Best decision I made that whole day. The food is outstanding. Not only is the presentation of the food impeccable but the flavours are epic. Although it is slightly pricey, you get your money’s worth. Our waitress, Privilege was lovely and made us feel so welcome. I will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family !
Every single dish was outstanding. Lovely atmosphere and attentive service. Perfect plates for sharing to get a taste of a variety of the menu. Excellent value for money for the experience you get.
Winter special 3 dishes for R150. Outstanding food! Such a perfect date restaurant to share 6 dishes. I always get the spinach pak Choi salad to mix with the other dishes😍 Such a beautiful drive to Hout Bay too
Amazing food. Staff were very friendly. Decor was perfect for a cosy cold night in. We had four different cocktails and they were all really good. The seafood options were very yummy!
The first time I went here, I was absolutely blown away by everything Cheyne's has to offer. From the concept to the presentation, the food and drinks are beautiful. Unfortunately the second time wasn't as good for some reason - maybe it was just not a great night. The main problem was we ordered a dish which came covered in peanuts, but this was not stated on the menu and I am highly allergic! Luckily my friend tried the dish first. However, I would still recommend this place. The service is always good and the food is very unique.
Had a delicious anniversary dinner with my partner last night at Cheynes! The food was super tasty, fresh and delicious as well as beautifully plated! Everything on the menu sounded incredible 😍will definitely be back again
Cheyne’s is an absolutely amazing fine dining experience.
It is a tapas restaurant done right! You wouldn’t believe the food combinations, I would never expect two very different flavors working so well together.
This is definitely one of the best places in Cape Town that everyone must try out!
The only thing I can suggest is share! The food is very rich, I found it difficult to finish my own dishes.
Share the flavors with your friends and family!
I have one word for Cheyne's: LOVE!
Look and feel: Cheyne's has great decor with big, dark wooden tables and classic leather chairs. They also have beautiful artwork on the walls which is actually for sale. The restaurant is generally quite quiet at lunch time, but busy, vibey and cosy at dinner time.
Service: I have been three times and I have had great service every time. The waiters are friendly, well spoken and knowledgeable about the menu. I have no complaints!
Food and drinks: They have some interesting cocktails on the menu for those who enjoy a good cocktail that is a bit different from the standard cocktails. Their pacific rim tapas are absolutely amazing. They have a great selection of seafood, poultry, vegetarian and dessert options. There is definitely something for everyone!
This restaurant is a MUST try!
I visited Cheyne’s during one of Cape Town’s restaurant weeks and I was pretty blown away by the sheer selection of dishes. There is definitely something for everyone! My experience included several tapas dishes for a really reasonable price and I was certainly not disappointed by the food. The restaurant itself is cozy and the staff are friendly, offering good service. This is a place to try if you’re into different foods and tapas-style meals!
Pure. FLIPPEN. Genius.
Had the most incredible meal at Cheyne's in July over their winter special period. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and special in the little restaurant. We were brought a jug of water (on request) with a large piece of charcoal in it, which I really loved.
The food incredible - both my boyfriend and I had our favorite tapas ever there (two different ones: the tuna tataki tacos and the pork 😍) They were actually so good that we ended up paying extra and each getting our favorite dish again. The other food was exceptional too, these ones just stood out to us.
The service was really great, attentive and helpful without being overbearing. The staff are super knowledgeable which is awesome.
We took our own bubbly and then bought some delicious white wine. Would have loved to try a cocktail but we had to leave something for next time.
We went to Cheyene's last night as a date night treat and we were absolutely blown away. First of all their Winter special deal of 3 Tapas for R150 is a steal considering how delicious the food was.
We shared the soft shell crab, chilli salmon, tempura shrimp, duck croquette, crispy pork bao, rump steak and to end the tempura banana dessert. I cannot fault any of the dishes, a difficult choice, but our best, if we have to choose, were the crab and the dessert. And to top it off the cocktails were amazing and the service phenomenal.
What a great experience, we will definitely be returning soon to try out some of the other dishes on the menu.
Hands down my favorite restaurant in Hout Bay. The food is impeccable... look for their specials they often have on. Currently its 150 for three dishes, then you can add on more dishes at R50 each. I highly recommend the Sriracha Chicken Wings, Tobiko beef, Fuji Apple slaw and the potato and coconut dumplings. Also check out their sister restaurant Lucky Bao which serves up asian street food next door. They make the best burger in Cape Town... seriously.
We had a fantastic evening at Cheyne's!
They are running a winter special, where you can order 3 tapas for R150. We were a group of 5 so we were able to all try 15 tapas dishes.
I honestly could not fault any of the dishes- the flavour combinations were sensational!
Our waiter was awesome, super charming and very funny!
Can't wait to go back!
Hands down, one of the best meals I've ever had. Each and every dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. The sauces and garnishes deserve a special mention. They are really spectacular. The Winter Yum Cha special is such good value for money - R50 per dish. The portions are generous too. Service is friendly and efficient - Samson was great and really engaging. Decor is dark and moody, but warm and inviting at the same time. What an experience! Will definitely be back.
Incredible, unbelievable, and delicious! Service, food and ambience, no faults here at all! Got introduced to this place by a friend, we ordered a variety of dishes... And each one was better than the last. You will certainly see me again!
Been to Cheynes a few times with friends and family. Food always amazing , brilliant service and great ambience . Tapas Asian fusion- top draw.
Wow! I am absolutely blown away by this hidden little gem! The staff were super friendly and helpful. The decor and vibe is just so unique, intimate and cozy- they even had the fireplace going on a winters night! But the best thing about this place is their absolutely EXCEPTIONAL cuisine! I have never eaten food with such flavour! Their winter deals are awesome, too! You have to try this place.
Such a great experience. Had a taste of lots of things! The squid, shrimp and potato and coconut dumplings were my favourites. The risotto was also super tasty. The vibe was great. Cocktails also 👌 Service was good too. Really can't complain about anything. I'd definitely recommend it for a special night out!
A quaint restaurant in Hout Bay, away from the busy city. Relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a special occasion or even a casual night out. The menu is made up of tapas - I've been there three times and tried almost everything - all excellent. Top recommendations - the soft shell crab, the duck tacos and the semifreddo. Will definitely go again!
Didn't make a booking but we were accommodated anyway. They have something called Yum Cha dining which let's you select any 4 dishes for a set price. I would have loved to try their Yum Cha dining experience but not everyone at the table was interested and it's unfortunately for the entire table or not at all. Food tasted absolutely great and was well presented. I suggest you make reservations or check availability before going.

Had the absolute pleasure of dining at Cheynes a few weeks ago. The atmosphere, staff and the food were incredible! Highly recommend the chilli beef in particular. Can't wait to go back!
The food is Outstanding!
A well spent Saturday afternoon here. We had the special which was definitely worth it.
R250 and you choose 4 dishes from the menu, Any way you like. 4 desserts, 2 starters, 2 mains.
We decided to go all out and try as much as we could. 8 dishes! Our excitement got the best of us!
The Chilli & Salt squid was mind blowing, the green chilli sauce was honestly the tastiest sauce I have ever had. I ended up dipping my chopsticks into the sauce and forgetting about the squid.
The beef tatake poke bowl was phenomenal. It was seasoned perfectly.
We found that the Fiji apple slaw was most disappointing, the mayo was overwhelming in the dish. Lucky Bao next door has amazing slaw, perhaps our expectations were set too high for that specific dish.
The pak Choi was delicious, I would have preferred a little less soy & peanuts though.
Overall it was a lovely dining experience. I will most definitely be back.
Wow what a cool experience, the service was good. We went a bit early on a Saturday so the vibe was chilled. The food was fantastic we had the special and ordered two extra dishes ( a tad over zealous ) the first dish was the salt and chilli squid which was amazing ! The chilli sauce was out of this world. We had the soft shell crab which was ok, for me it's one of those dishes that always under delivers, it looks and reads better on a menu than it will ever taste.
The beef tatake poke bowl was delicious and had me scraping the bowl, beef was seasoned and cooked to perfection.
The Fiji apple slaw was my least favorite dish, to much mayo ( the slaw at lucky boa next door was phenomenal and that is why we ordered it thinking it would be similar)
The duck fat fries were ok, nothing to rave about, weird texture and needed a bit more oomf.
The ribs were great a little too sweet.
The pak Choi dish was delicious.
My fav dish was the Bombay beef dish, reminded me of a crispy beef dish but the added coconut was insane !! This dish was fantastic.
My dessert was the cereal milk ice cream and miso caramel, at first it was jarringly sweet but when combined with everything else on the plate it was superb.
The whole experience was great and I will definitely be back. My only criticism is the food was a little sweet and I felt some dishes didn't have enough acid to balance out the sweetness and relied on deep frying a bit too much. Maybe it was just our choices and things felt a bit rough on our palate. We did order 10 dishes but the menu looked amazing and had to try everything. All in all a great dining experience.
Outstanding food served at Cheyne's, but what a pity about the service on this particular day - so incredibly slow and inattentive. Otherwise, I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the food and the presentation. Portions were very generous too. Special mention must be made of the deep fried potato and coconut dumplings, as well as the sago pudding - both which were perfection. Highly recommend for the quality food!
We visited Cheyne's for their winter special. Of the nine dishes we ordered, everything exceeded my expectations. Inventive and super tasty. Best risotto I've ever had. Can't wait to return.
We went to Cheyne's a couple of weeks ago to try out their winter menu special (R200 per person for 4 plates each).
We arrived to a very warm welcome and a lovely, cosy ambiance and atmosphere.
We each tried a different dish from the menu. I had the
- chili salt squid, lime pepper and miso aioli (almost like squid popcorn - delicious) from the 'sea' section
- fried octo chicken, garlic, ginger, mirin, soy, peanut and chili cream (amazing!) from the 'land' section
- spinach and pak choi ohitashi, toasted sesame, peanuts and sesame dressing (very light and refreshing) from the 'earth' section
- dark chocolate tonka bean fondant, strawberry and miso ice cream with chocolate sauce (incredible!) from the 'happy endings' section
Everything was absolutely out of this world amazing and the service was fantastic. Overall, we really felt as if the special was worth our while. The perfect place for a fine dining, romantic evening!
The restaurant is usually closed on Sundays but we were lucky; there was a table for 20 booked so they opened the whole restaurant. They would normally be fully booked and with good reason...
The two of us tried the winter special - 4 dishes per person at R200. Every single dish was delightful!
Cheyne's is a very nice spot I must say. The food was outstanding (little pricey if you are on a tight budget) and well presented. Some very nice Asian flavors and combinations. Service was very good and a big thank you to our waiter Privilege for being so kind. Only downside was the fact that it felt a little cramped inside. I liked the vibe and the buzz of people eating and having fun. Loved the fireplace especially now that its winter and much needed. This is a tapas style menu so be sure to share and taste different things. I liked the menu and Im sure you will too. Keep up the good work guys. Highly recommended!
Unbelievable food. We were very grateful to the waiter who suggested the spinach and bok choi from the earth section which provided some balance to the other superb plates. The Korean pork belly and duck are 2 dishes we won't forget! 2 people need 4-5 plates, so rather bank on 250-300 per head with no booze.
This is a tough one to review as everything was so amazing I'm scared I lack enough adjectives! Cheyne's is a complete food experience where every bite you take will take you on an adventure - I kid you not, there was a point where I wanted to cry from the amazingness I was tasting in my mouth. The menu is split into 4 sections, sea, land, earth and happy endings - dabble across all of them, nothing with disappoint (even right down to the spinach). It's difficult to pick but I'd definitely say, do not leave without trying the firecracker crayfish, the soft shell crab and the Mumbai chilli beef. Honestly, the most amazing experience!
Absolutely fantastic - great food. All the dishes where incredibly interesting! We had a vegetarian with us and the vegetarian options were as good as the meat and fish options. Our only.complaint would be that they should stagger the serving so that the food stays warm. All in all - great wine and incredibly interesting food. Loved it!!
I was taken to Cheyne's as a birthday surprise and it was the best experience ever. The food was delicious, every bite was an explosion of flavours. The food is presented in a way that beckons you to indulge yet at the same time you don't want to ruin what looks like a work of art. The staff were attentive and friendly without being intrusive. By far my new favourite restaurant.
Gorgeous setting, beautiful paintings all for sale. The food is as spectacular in sight and taste! My only wish is for a vegan dessert that is not a plate of fruit. Also they often run out of items, which is a good thing as it speaks of the freshness of the food.
The deep fried coconut milk is superb, but the pickled tofu dish wasn't great for me. My sister and mother go mad for their seafood, especially the tempura prawns and soft shell crab.

We were invited by friends, I was a bit skeptical about the menu and wasn't sure if the Hubs would like it, but I really wanted to try it out. Well oh my gosh, to die for! We had the ribs...yum, the truffle and Parmesan chips I think it was...wow, the calamari wow, our table tried most of the dishes and everything was wow!!! A definite must, don't be put off by the menu at all. Didn't take enough pics was too in the moment.
Fantastic food. All extremely interesting and incredibly tasty dishes.
The only reason I have decided not to give Cheyne's a full 5.0 rating is because there were numerous options on the menu which were out of stock and had to be substituted (which I don't believe is on for a restaurant with such a high price tag)
Other than that and maybe a little less than attentive service (Often found ourselves pouring our own wine and water) I would find myself back at Cheyne's in a flash and would highly recommend!
Cheyne's was a very cool experience. We went in quite a large group and shared a number of dishes.
All the food was delish and sophistically plated. There were one or two dishes that didn't suit our taste buds but I am sure that if you have a more pan-Asian palette that they would ring true.
The staff were superb and the restaurant felt very homely.
Truly a hidden gem! I cannot describe my excitement to visit this restaurant and thankfully all expectations were fully met!
The menu is divided into 4 sections, namely sea (seafood), land (meat), earth (vegetarian) and happy endings (dessert, of course!). Since all the dishes are tapa-sized, the idea is that you order a whole bunch of food which you share with your friends over a nice bottle of wine.
I cannot fault even one of the dishes! I honestly think the flavor combinations on each plate is an absolute delight for your tastebuds. No one dish is alike and they all have an Asian-inspired flare to them, which is what gives this restaurant it's uniqueness. The firecracker crayfish is crispy and soft on the inside, accompanied by a delicious dipping sauce. The 5-spice pork belly is an absolute winner, coming with a perfect crackling (my absolute weakness!). The tuna was also amazing! So packed full of flavor and the sauces it came with were top class. I tried the deep fried milk purely because I'd never heard of anything like it before and it was definitely worth it! Totally not what I expected - I could taste hints of chili in it, hidden somewhere in a puffy ball of yumminess. The chicken was also amazing - the soy sauce it was marinated in absolutely made the dish! The chili beef was to die for! Not too spicy, but crispy in a way that reminded me a bit of a strip of crispy bacon. Delicious! Other dishes we tried included the lamb cutlet, mushrooms, edamame beans, fries, squid and pan-fried salmon, all of which were also packed full of flavor. I could go on to describe these dishes, but they were all just so amazing, words would not do them justice!
Finally, we of course had our "happy endings". I had heard that the peanut butter shake was a winner, so we had to try that. And were not disappointed! The shake is so thick, you have to eat it with a spoon. Maybe it's just because I love peanut butter, but this "shake" was an absolute standout for me! We also tried the chocolate fondant and the green tea pudding, both of which were a great way to end a night of feasting on the best Asian cuisine I've ever tasted!
My only disappointment, and the only reason this restaurant doesn't get a 5 star rating from me, is that our waiter was pathetic. After he took our orders, he just disappeared. I had to ask someone to call him for us so that he could open the wine and after opening the wine, we had to pour for ourselves.
This is really an amazing restaurant and definitely worth the drive through to Hout Bay! Come hungry and with a fat wallet, because you're going to be wanting to try everything on the menu!
Top tips: You can bring your own wine, in which case they charge a corkage of R40. I would recommend ordering about 3 - 4 dishes per person plus desserts. The seafood portions are quite small, so if more than one person would like to taste a specific dish from that section, considering ordering more than one. If you're going for dinner, book in advance! They get quite busy. Parking is relatively easy to find. The bill comes to around R280 per person.
Delicious food at a humble little restaurant in Hout Bay. I recommend the Tuna Pizza! Food comes in very small portions but is all carefully crafted and interesting.
This must be the most devine eating experience I have ever had, a fantastic venue serving top quality styled food. A great experience from the pork belly dish right down to the salted caramel and peanut butter milkshake. A must visit venue if you are in Hout Bay looking for something to remember forever.
We dined here as a massive group of 20 people for a birthday dinner while they were still doing their winter special.
It was flipping excellent. The food, the small curated wine list, the service and the ambience.
Will definitely be back to enjoy this gem for a date night or special dinner.

What a little gem! The staff are so friendly and helpful and always have a smile on their faces. The food is absolutely exquisite with every option on the menu being a taste sensation. Your tastebuds will literally explode from all the flavors. Not only that but it is beautifully plated.
The spinach and coleslaw are an absolute must. You won't be the same after trying it.
The only complaint I have is that the food is slightly on the greasy side but other than that, absolutely no complaints. Will be back.
I went to Cheyne's with two friends on a busy Saturday night but the host was more than accommodating considering we were just walk ins. The food was SENSATIONAL!! I cant over state how much my friends and I enjoyed the food. I'll be sure to go back again when im in the area.
So my boyfriend took me to Cheyne's the other day after a botched anniversary evening earlier in the week. AMAZING is all I can say as the food was spectacular. Although tapas and small portions I did not leave hungry. The food was perfectly balanced and presented. All the flavours worked in harmony and it was a very very happy evening.
If you are looking for a little gem this is the one to try! I hate liking a restaurant to another but this is basically pot luck club in Hout Bay!
The menu is similar in the way the courses are designed (earth, sea etc) and all tapas style courses. This is a winner! Just wish It wasn't so far to drive but in hind sight, probably best as I may be tempted
On a daily basis to pop in! Drool worthy food for sure!
Such an amazing restaurant with awesome, friendly waiters! My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal there. The tapas menu is so delicious, making a decision was so hard!
Cheynes is offering a winter special of R200 for four courses. The food is beautifully designed and presented, and the flavours are extraordinary. Be prepared for unexpected combinations which just work. I had the Firecracker crayfish, 5 spice pork belly, fried milk and creme catalana for dessert. The service is professional and courteous. Highly recommended!
Absolutely blown away by this little gem! The service was great, we got our food quickly, but most importantly the food was delicious - I tasted flavours and flavour combinations that I had never tasted before. The crayfish, beef carpaccio and the deep fried milk were absolute winners. Will definitely be back, highly highly recommended.
Best place to go if you are in Houtbay, this Tapas bar is unbelievable, even if you do not like Asian food, you will LOVE this place,I can say that their chocolate fondant and peanutbutter ice cream is the best desert I have ever eaten.
I give the restaurant a 5 star rating. The food is the best food I have eaten in Cape Town. I love the idea of sharing plates. It's pricey but so worth the money. Highly recommend it to everyone!
When we visited Cheyne’s they were having a few liquor license hiccups – which was great for us because we got to arrive with a bottle of ice cold Krone and skip the corkage!
I was delighted and surprised by Cheyne’s menu and food. The menu is divided into Sea, Land and Earth. Each division focuses on food from those sections. Sea includes dishes featuring crayfish, squid, fish, crab and prawns. Land has dishes of pork, chicken, beef, duck and lamb. and Earth focuses on great vegetarian options that shine the light on amazing vegetables and fruits. I always struggle choosing dishes from a menu because I have great order envy. I don’t think I’ve ever struggled to pick dishes so much as I did at Cheyne’s.
Our favourite dishes were the firecracker crayfish, the deepfried milk and Korean pork belly.
I ordered the Yuzu creme catalana with cinnamon and ginger tuille for dessert! This is much more of a twist on the traditional one I’m used to and I loved every bite! This was the perfect light end to an amazing meal.
Cheyne’s really does deliver a five star experience! If Cheyne’s was a spot on Bree Street it would be booked out every night for weeks in advance.
We had an amazing dinner at Cheyne’s! The menu was both a surprise and a delight!
The food as always is exceptional and beautifully presented.
I'm a little sad that the wine selection has changed from what it was but don't let that deter you.
Reluctant to write a review about this place because I don't want everyone to know about it, because that would make it too busy for me to go there!! What a brilliant concept this is - Asian inspired tapas that are all unbelievably good. We did 10 "meals" between 2 of us - I think 9 would be the perfect amount! Would avoid the lamb pie and the truffle fries next time. The beef was a winner, as was the shrimp and the deep fried milk! You will definitely see me here again. Only problem I had was the art on the walls - thought it inappropriate given the atmosphere of fine dining that they are trying to convey.
Seriously, go here.
Absolutely outstanding - best meal of the year - as mentioned on our blog www.sprucelifestyle.co.za . Loved this little spot in Hout Bay - food was interesting (the deep fried milk notably), the flavours intense and the whole vibe of the restaurant relaxed and unpretentious. Love the use of Asian flavours and techniques across all the different dishes - was blown away by it all. Special mention on the dessert selection: the peanut butter milkshake, and apple pie (caramelized and tart at the same time). Can't wait for the next trip to Cape Town to eat here.
This place is absolutely incredible! The food is outstanding, the service is phenomenal and the atmosphere is edgy, cool, but still welcoming. I'd highly recommend Cheyne's if you wish to have a wonderful dining experience
Laura and I love this restaurant. Amazing food backed up by excellent, friendly service. We will definitely eat there again.
Cheyne is currently working through a licensing issue but the enterprising staff offered to, literally, run to Checkers and buy us a suitable wine for our meal. You do not see such dedicated staff often.
One of my favorite Cape Town restaurants. Not the cheapest, but you get why you pay for... Incredible Asian 'tapas style' cuisine.
Unbelievable flavours and presentation. Worth the trip to Hout Bay from any area.
Make sure you book as I'm the only fan!

We had an awesome experience at Cheynes. The food was a combination of beauty, surprise and all round filled with tantalizing tastes.
So much detail was put into every dish, regardless of how fast the delivery of the meals were. The portions are perfect sizes and can be ordered on your own times to satiety. Not too much and not too little. Just make sure to leave room for dessert - perhaps opt to share. (3 of us got to dig into the dark chocolate and butterscotch jelly dessert with banana ice cream).
The menu catered for all tastes from seafood, vegetarian (DO have the deep fried milk) and meat. Unfortunately some of the dishes had run out, so try get there early! The duck is still on my bucket list.
The service was good, with a feeling of camaraderie all round. The downside is the restaurant is still awaiting on their liquor license, but you may take your own wine. Advisable take both white and red options, as the selection of tapas can benefit from either bouquet.
Thumbs up all round from the 4 of us. Thank you Cheyne!
(Excuse the quality of photos - a bit dark)
Went for first time and had really great tapas. Could've had anything on the menu. The specials were awesome too, making a difficult choice even tougher. Only weird thing was that they charged corkage, when they'd asked us to bring our own wine as they were "between liquor licenses". I don't mind paying corkage at all! Just found it odd that it was 50 bucks a bottle when they couldn't legally serve wine themselves. Will definitely be back, though. Awesome food and great service.
A truly amazing experience!! Food of the highest calibre. All the different tastes was like a mouth orgasm... Will definitely see us again.
A fantastic experience, great atmosphere, fantastic service and catering for that special food experience. The desserts are to die for....will definitely go there again at the next opportunity.
A little restaurant in a little town, but by no means can you refer to their food using any word but Delicious !! Firstly, their menu sounded so amazing that deciding on what to eat for dinner was the hardest part of the night ! Safe to say we ordered 3 starters, polished them off and ordered another 3 of the exact same ones ( they were that good) and basically stopped just before you get to the stage of "lick your plate clean" . A definite must when visiting the Bay. The staff are also friendly and very efficient.
A 5.0 rating is a tough one to give out... except in the case of Cheyne's. Last night I had a meal so perfect, I almost don't want to eat anything ever again. The gorgeous tasting menu is divided into categories of Earth, Sea and Land, and obviously we had to try a few dishes from each. We started with the deep fried milk (which sounded too interesting to skip) and the chilli salt squid with lime pepper. Both were bursting with flavour and we lingered over the dishes for awhile, glasses of Chardonnay in hand. Next we moved onto the crispy tonkatsa duck rolls (divine!) and the sticky-sweet Mumbai chilli beef. The latter was actually so large and filling that we decided we only had just enough room left for dessert. (There's always room for dessert). We ordered the yuzu creme catalone, which can only be described as the best creme brulee I've ever had the pleasure of eating, and had the subtlest hint of cinnamon and ginger flavour. Not the kind of people to pass up on cheese when it's on a menu, we also shared the artisan cheese board with fig and melon preserve. Our waiter was lovely and made excellent recommendations, the interior of the restaurant is cosy and candle-lit, and Cheyne himself is fantastic. I'll be bringing everyone I know.
In my previous revue of Cheynes I gave it a 4.5, after my visit last week I have to up it to a 5! Can't stop thinking about, food was sensational, what a privilege to have my 2 favorite restaurants in the same suburb as this together with Katima are easily my favs!! Previous post .... Really enjoyed Cheyne's. Nice different menu. Atmosphere and service was good. Great food and experience. Value for money was also in a good range.
So, one of the best surprises or one of the biggest disappointments? It depends what part of the evening you are looking at. But regardless, Cheyns is a very welcome addition to Hout Bays culinary world and I have the feeling that in the months ahead you will have to book well in advance to get a table. That said they need to sort out a few things if they truly want to become a top class Cape Town restaurant.
Let’s start with some basics:
Waitron service: Very good. The guy that served us knew his stuff. He could explain both the food and wine menus in detail. He is one of those guys where you feel the restaurant is lucky to have him.
Ambiance, perfect setting for this quaint and unique restaurant
Plating, good but tending towards something you would expect to see in the later stages of Masterchef. Been there, done that type of style.
Wine selection, limited but a decent enough spread to cater for the big spender and the penny pincher.
Beer selection, limited with one exception, a rather tasty little experience in a very unique bottle called a "Lucky" beer, well priced too.
Ok, so now onto the confusing part.
Starters, the highlight was the deep fried Milk. A truly inspired dish made with milk and coconut milk, mixed with some flour to enable it to set. This was very delicious! Vera had the Crayfish tempura, it was good but not as good as the milk. Both dishes could have done with some to cut through the oil of the Tempura.
Mains, now this is where the wheels started to come off. “The best Lamb cutlets” were average at best. Very fatty and the fat had not been crisped up enough for my liking. The deep fried potato and coconut dumplings where raw and inedible. The highlight of the dish was the smear of pumpkin puree, very very tasty but it was not enough to rescue what was a disappointing main! The pulled Lamb that Vera ordered was amazing, truly amazing but again served with some deep fried vegetable. Both dishes could have done with something fresh and light to lift the heaviness of the meat and fried stuff.
We finished off our wine and decided to give deserts a skip. Called for the bill and it came with a nice little surprise of two delicious ground coconut balls covered with white chocolate.
When trying to pay, their credit card machine was giving trouble and they tried to fix it for about 15 minutes before I offered to run to the garage across the road and draw cash. At no point did the owner/manager come up and apologies or try to assist. When I went out to get the cash he was sitting outside having a beer and a smoke with some friends. I find this very strange when none of your guests can pay for their bills and your waiters are trying very hard to sort things out. This was a rather disappointing end to what started off as such a great evening.
Will I go back? Yes, I want to try it again and see if they managed to iron out these teething problem. The place is only four months old but had HUGE potential.
A gem of a restaurant! The small plates are all individual taste explosions. My favourite was the forbidden black rice risotto and the chilli beef. Great cocktail selection. Beautiful decor and friendly service.
Went here for dinner, has a really great moody atmosphere and background music. I really loved the aesthetic of the place too.
All the various dishes are visually appealing and have amazing tastes & flavours.
A small side note, all dishes are tapa style so don't expect to dine on large portions or servings.
Every bite is a taste sensation! Each dish is a well planned journey for your tastebuds. Great for special occasions and really cozy in winter. I have been here a few times and have never been disappointed.
This place is amazing. Food was delicious. Customer service was great, wish they had more for kids to do. Drinks were yummy too they have a nice fire place and clean toilets.
If you’re looking for a cute date night spot, this is the perfect place. The menu is tapas so perfect for sharing, as the portions are on the smaller side. There is a good variety of cocktails and wine and each dish was packed with flavour. Service was occasionally a bit slow, but they were busy so that is forgivable. I would highly recommend and look forward to returning.
Asian food is my favourite type of cuisine and Cheyenne’s just ticks all the boxes for me. Just 2 people are all the tapas dishes you see below. I was stuffed but got to taste all the amazing flavours that they are pulling off here. Well done.
This place has been our favourite meal on holiday so far. The restaurant is chilled and wasn't overly busy when we visited. The menu is exciting and different. We absolutely loved every dish that came out. The service was friendly and relaxed
The food was amazing, great service and I enjoyed my dinner! I can’t fault them on anything. Do give this restaurant a try if you’re in the area; you won’t regret it :)
I went for lunch with my partner and we had the most extraordinary dining experience. The food will put any 5 star, fine dining restaurant to shame.
We will definitely be coming back and have already referred friends and family.
I urge you to try this at least once as part of your bucket list.
Great value for money, especially with the 4 dishes for R420. All the dishes I had were exceptional, possibly the best crispy beef I've ever had! The atmosphere is really good too. Will definitely be going back to try the other dishes
