Review Bona Terra Cafe - Hillcrest

This has been one of my favourite local spots over the years, I've watched it grow and expand considerably. I'm very impressed and relieved to know that the offering in terms of food and good friendly service has been maintained. Great outdoor (and indoor if you would prefer) spot for a cup of coffee and slice of yummy cake (definitely try the baked cheesecake) or a full meal. There are fireplaces and blankys to keep you warm and cosy. The pizzas are really good! It offers a really good outdoor play area and equipment to keep the little people occupied within sight and a huge jumping pillow!

What a gem! Definitely for the whole family, a loved one, or just a catching up with friends. They have a great menu to suit a wide variety of taste buds. They also have a huge playground for the little ones.

It's always great to enjoy a meal here ,let the kids play in the sunshine and trees, and plants. Love this place.

This place is perfect if you have kids, there is so much entertainment. Esthetically pleasing as well. Food was really good, Staff are so helpful. We will definitely be going back!!! Also, there is a beautiful nursery🪴.

We loved having breakfast at Bona Terra Café on a beautiful, warm, sunny, December day. It’s amazing to see how after the flood damage in April the gardens have been recovered and they are even more inviting. There are amazing play areas for the kids and plenty of indoor and outdoor tables for the adults. The delight is to be able to choose which area of the garden to enjoy while partaking in an amazing red cappuccino or a specialty coffee. The carrot cake is also a feature. It feels like a mini retreat to be there.

Had an amazing day here with family. The place has a huge outdoor play area for kids with lots of equipment for playing. The setting is nice and chilled. We were here till late in the afternoon as the kids were enjoying themselves that much!😄 The food was delicious, but I wish they could add more items on their menu, especially for us omnivorous people🤭 if they could have some wings-nyana or a quick steak🤤 we'll be happy. The service is a bit slow at peak times. At one point, the waiter even forgot our request for another round of drinks🤦‍♀️Other than that, the place is great for an easy weekend, especially if you have kids.

An absolutely beautiful place. They have the food, service and atmosphere down to a tee. Perfect for the entire family and absolutely kids friendly. Spacious, relaxing and overall very relaxing and fun.

As a restaurant it is great! Went to a wedding here and it was also great - you practically have to do zero decor work because it already looks amazing with all the plants and raw brickwork. There were only 2 issues I had with it. The first is it is very cold as you can’t close it up completely as there aren’t doors on 2 sides (the need folding stacking doors here). Then the second, they ran out of food for 3 guests. (They quickest whipped up some more chicken curry so was all fine). I think as they are a restaurant they catered per person, but for bulk catering the general rule is 1,5x serving per person which means you won’t run out and allows for seconds. So all in all an amazing night was had.

The food was delicious and service very friendly The atmosphere is just what you need after a hectic week. Calm and winding down. Very beautiful ❤️

Great spot for the entire family. Massive play area for the kiddies and great foot and drinks for the adults. I'm definitely planning to visit again soon!

Honestly 5 star for a hidden gem in Hillcrest. We went on a cloudy , slightly rainy day but was such a beautiful atmosphere. Sitting next to the fire place looking out through metal window framed doors onto their back yard filled with kids play equipment. Cant wait to go when the sun is out.

What an awesome restaurant! We went on a rainy Sunday so there was no line to get in (a miracle). The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was DELISH! I highly recommend the fish cakes. My husband ordered the Swiss burger which he really enjoyed. It’s such a beautiful location too - doesn’t feel like you’re in KZN at all. And there’s a whole outdoor play centre for the little ones. A must visit!

It's a modern country eatery that I highly recommend you visit. You will love the hospitality. When we arrived it was busy but the owner overheard the staff saying we may have to wait 15 minutes or so. I think our sad faces showed and he so kindly tried hard to ensure that we where seated. The atmosphere is very unique and warm. The meals are well presented and beautifully prepared. You could feel the love of the owners and staff. There are lovely facilities for kids to play and relax. Pets are welcome. Near the Cafe is a well cared for nursery with Roses that will surely give your garden an exquisite upgrade. Enjoy the place and please share your feedback. PS. Really great place,I love it.I would highly recommend. The staff were friendly, the food was great, the atmosphere is perfect. The venue is superb,classy,welcoming, has you engulfed in nature as if you've taken a journey down the English country side meets mild rain forest, Simply picture perfect!! Should you wish to get away from the city, without a tedious drive, then this place is perfect. Kid friendly area with loads for them to do. If you're visiting towards the latter of the day, take a jacket.

Bona Terra is a not so hidden gem in the upper highway area. Offering everything from delicious breakfasts, light lunches, decadent cakes and refreshing cocktails. The atmosphere is beautiful, with safe play areas for the kids and even some ducks to watch. The outdoor seating area is wonderful on a sunny day and the indoor area is spacious and cozy on a winters day.

Visited this wonderful place for lunch with my family and well it was incredible to say the least! The staff members are very friendly, especially the manager (didn't ask for her name unfortunately) she's super attentive and she was the first loud friendly welcome we recieved which was lovely! The scenery and location is beautiful and peaceful. The decor of the place so well thought out and is very tasteful. The food is... just... WOW!! Just by looking at the menu you can see that each dish was thought about carefully. I could go on and on about every aspect of this wonderful place but I suggest you go take a look for yourself!! Will definitely be back!

We visited Bona Terra for the first time last week and the breakfast and service were phenomenal. We decided to visit again today to try something from the lunch menu - wow it was incredible. Such a beautiful setting combined with great service and amazing food. The front of house manageress is so attentive and such a lovely, happy person. Well done! Our new favorite place.

Had lunch at Bona Terra today - what an incredible place for adults and toddlers! Play area is amazing with lovely staff but does not detract should someone want a quieter breakfast or lunch! High five to Precious for her great service and 5 stars to Bona Terra for creating the perfect venue on our doorstep!

Came across this beautiful setting by shear chance whilst exploring different stop over lunch venues to the norm. Of course we were delighted we found Bona Terra Cafe and was greeted by friendly staff. The lunch experience was great with lots to offer in the surrounds, kids play area, nursery, antique furniture shop. Heading there again this weekend with my family.

Wow. The service was TERRIBLE. After being the first table to arrive, we ordered drinks which took 20 mins to arrive. The food took over 45 mins to arrive... with the kids food coming last and then waiting an additional ten minutes for the last meal to arrive. Eggs were done incorrectly which is especially awful when you are pregnant. Children's chips were made in a rush (poor planning) and were totally soggy. The waiter then obviously handed our table over to the manageress who totally overdid the apologies and really didn't change the experience at all. Overall, not great. I really hope this is sorted out, this area has such a need for good food and entertainment for children. The restaurant is in a beautiful setting and has such potential.

Sadly your service is terrible with such a divine venue . None of us eat or drank together took a hour for a coffee and a hour and a half for food that was then wrong still . Please try improve on your service as u really have a winner of a venue but won’t be back until service has improved .

Lunch on Eater Sunday was excellent, wonderful service from amazingly friendly staff and delicious food and drink. Totally recommended.

I really like the food but what ridiculous service today! Our waiter checked three times with us on different parts of our order and then still got it wrong. Everyone else got their coffee and 10 minutes later I got mine....I often find service to be very slow here which puts me off coming more often.

We went there for lunch. After 2 staff members told us someone will attend to us...we had to eventually ask for service. Waited for about 45min if not longer for food. Chips cold. Coffee cold. Got tea and no tea cup. Had to ask for one. The food was good (thank you chef) that excludes the terrible chips. Service terrible. It is sad because it is such a lovely place to go with children. Will i go back.....no. Step up your service. Heard a couple next to us moaning about the service aswell.
