Review Pick A Pancake - Hartbeespoort

Amazing vibe and great for a breakie and and super amazing waffles and pancakes

I ordered the Oreo waffles and it was extremely good, the waffle was so nice and fluffy. When we first got it, the ice cream used consisted of mainly ice but the waitress was friendly and immediately switched it out for a different one. The waitress didn't adhere to COVID regulations as she wasn't wearing a mask. Overall a satisfactory experience.

Very nice and we enjoyed our waffles.

Great food and vibe.. Can't go to the harties area without visiting this little dime of a restaurant. Situated on one of the main roads makes it slightly tricky to find parking but there's a little market right next door to walk through and find some local gifts. Best pancakes and waffles around and definitely recommend this place before your trip home

Loads of variety and good food. Get there early or you could wait a while for your meal which is worth the wait !! Elizabeth was great. Other reviews say it is dated in appearance and they are right but I think it adds to the ambience of the place. As a techie, I saw working CRT computer monitors for the first time in 8 years. More concerning, they still use Windows XP!! Please update your hardware - you are so at risk!!

Julia... Thank you for the best service. This place is great, friendly staff, very clean. It was sooo cold. Julia even offered me a blanket šŸ˜€. I will definitely recommend Vovo Telo

A nice vibe. I love the wall decor. Damn fine waffles. A nice menu. Great prices.

I fondly recall having a kudu pancake here 15 years ago, but the current menu option was somewhat limited by comparison. The menu did say the downstairs and upstairs kitchens serve different variations, but the waitron told us it was the same (and our food seemed to be prepared downstairs but served to us upstairs.) Everything was delicious, and the old wooden building is interesting.

The wait is not bad. Rmember they sear 170 odd people and everything is fresh. Well done. The best pancakes ever.
Ian Sanders
Pancakes and waffles were great, service was fine. We were told they did not have credit card facilities. There was no cash float so the waiter could not give me change. That made things much pricier. And soured the experience somewhat.

Terrible customer service. Food disappointing. Ordered pancakes and a Prego burger. Pancakes arrived 20mins later, only to be told then that there were no breadrolls left for the prego roll. They said they could put it on bread. We asked if it was already cooked & were told that they had already put it on. After waiting and my party having almost finished their meals, a steak on brown bread was placed in front of me. It wasn't even toasted or buttered. After cutting into the steak, i found it was completely raw & just coloured on the outside to look cooked. The waitress took the plate to the owner. The owner was no where to be seen. They should have firstly come to apologize for the lack of breadrolls, but definitely have come to us after being shown that the steak was raw. Never going back there again. Even the pancakes were disappointing. They were thin & not like they used to be.

The ice cream was quite melted already and the pancake itself looked a bit burnt as well as the apple was sour. Few of the orders came late. A wrong order was given. The cordial in the drink was too much. I ordered a strawberry milkshake and it never came. The place is hot as well. The staff looks confused. And it wasn't busy. Would not recommend coming here.

We had savory pancakes with bacon and cheese with muschrooms and mushroom sauce on Saturday. The mushroom sauce was a milky, floury and unflavoured sauce with no mushrooms. The bacon was horrible and precooked and set in little pieces. The cheese was a cheap orange processed cheese, the pancake was unflavoured. Was a tasteless mess. Overall We left there feeling nauseous and unsatisfied, will never return. The only good thing was the waiter being friendly.

What a disappointment. I ordered the pancake with bacon and cheese with avo pulp. It was dry, the cheese looked like feta, but was tasteless and the avo was black pieces. Not pulp. They used to serve the pancakes with salads, but sadly not anymore. To top it all off ....... it was very expensive. I am sorry to say that I will never go there again.

Super friendly staff, food not bad. A quaint South African vibe.

A lovely little place with an interesting menu.

They take way too long to serve your drinks, then they gove you dirty broken glasses. No wonder they are never busy

Will never return to this restaurant! The food may be nice but the service and attitude of staff is miserable
Tamica Ching
Very very disappointed food was pathetic and service even more so

The Pancakes were delicious... our waiters name was Agreement... his service was amazing, he was able to anticipate our needs and was super friendly.

Slow service but food ok, seating dusty and dirty but they clean the chairs with a feather duster before you sit

Visited Siunday 29 May 2016. Took 10min to be served and another 55 mins for 3 pancakes. Service very poor. Waiter took order twice and still got it wrong. We got incorrect coffee and pancakes were returned as incorrect. When they eventually arrived were ice cold and cream was not fresh but an artificial substitute. Will not recommend them to anyone. Appears to be no supervision present. Wanted to complaint but couldn't find a manager. Worst pancakes i have ever had.

Good food, good service and good company. What's not to like ?

The pancakes are AMAZING. We stopped over for something small and ended up with biggest pancakes I have ever had. Prices are very reasonable. Ice cream is good quality and prices are exceptionally reasonable.
Very very impressive little place.
Coconut sugar pancake was my absolute favorite.

We had such a welcome receiving by the waiter! The service and food was next level, and we were a crowd of 12 ladies. I love the place! Will definitely visit more often!
Simply the worst hamburger ever. Processed cheese covered the Rump steak. Not good at all!
Burger was removed from the bill.
Wonā€™t be back soon!

Loved the tranquility of this unique decorated gem in Harties. I frequent this lovely restaurant whenever I get the opportunity. Great value for money with a menu fit for a king. Food was very tasty and well presented. Service was excellent considering that the place was full to capacity in the upstairs and downstairs area. The waiting period for our meals did take a good 45 minutes but completely understandable with the capacity they were catering for at that moment. Anyway, time flew by while we enjoyed the good company and lovely setting. This by itself can only proof that this venue is very popular for many reasons. Our waiter was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable and you could feel the pride and confidence in their work. I have to add that this venue and the menu was always great but we can certainly see the improvements made over the last couple of visits. Menu even bigger and better than before, meals even tastier, all around cleanliness certainly upgraded and staff properly trained and informed. Highly recommended for the whole family.

What a treat. The savoury pancake was beyond divine. Full meal all in one. Friendly service and tasty food. Wish I stayed closer to visit more often. Make sure you are hungry before visiting them.
Dani Fonseca
The savory pancakes we had were raw, bland and inedible. In addition, the service was extremely slow as our meal took 40 minutes to arrive. This was a poor dining experience.

This little place brings back so many memories. Itā€™s truly a reminder of my youth. Itā€™s as though nothing has changed and itā€™s been forgotten in time.
Both the sweet and savory pancakes are lovely.
Iā€™m a sucker for the classics , so for mains I had a bacon, avo & feta pancake and for dessert a classic cinnamon and sugar pancake.
The portions are huge and the pancakes were perfec. A lovely spot to go to reminisce about the past.

Pick a pancake is situated in a wonderful tranquil spot near the Harties craft market. The treehouse atmosphere delivers a quiet out-of-the-city experience. The menu in terms of sweet pancakes is quiet limited then you would expect from a name such as ā€œPick-a-Pancakeā€ ... there are no fresh fruit or seasonal berries to accompany your meal. I settled for the original cinnamon and sugar with cream on the side. Have to admit - this was quiet tasty! I also ordered a cappuccino with cream - it was like warm when it had arrived with the cream almost diluted. Perhaps it was kept too long before it was delivered to me. Overall, the pancakes were good.
Claudio
Pancakes were overpriced, particularly considering that they are pretty much tasteless, plus the banana was not ripe. Wouldnā€™t recommend it. We had the Oreo, Astros and Banana Caramel pancakes.

This is an amazing place to stop for something sweet or savory. The service isnā€™t as good as the sweet pancakes, but if you keep in mind that most people enjoy a cruse around Harties, it really is understandable. The live music from the market behind the restaurant makes for a chilled vibe. This was a good treat!

Pick a Pancake / Rooftop Burgers is one big disappointment after the next.

Food is very expensive on the menu, but in reality when the food comes the taste of cheap ingredients fill your mouth. I order the "Rib" burger only to find the "rib" is some form of processed meat which I'm not even sure if it actually was Rib, sure didn't taste like it. This is however the 2nd time we make the mistake of going... will not be returning very soon ..

Wanted to have a quick bite to eat before my meeting and I knew Pick a Pancake wasn't all that bad. Hmmpf....service was actually okay'ish, but leaves huge room for improvement. The milkshake is so last century with the ice cream and flavor sauce mixed up. Like who still goes this artificial.

Now for the pancake. I ordered the billtong and cheese pancake. I guess I got exactly what I ordered. A pancake with billtong and cheese "smothered in a cheese sauce. Let's start with the so called cheese sauce. It was bland and totally floury. The pancake filling. Well the cheese wasn't even melted because the food was that cold. The pancake was rock hard in parts that it wasn't fit for human consumption.

I couldn't wait to just pay my bill and get the hell out of Dodge.

This place is a tourist trap, but be warned not to fall for the trap.

I have been coming to this place for years now, and itā€™s the best way to just chill and spend some quality time with loved ones on an early Saturday/Sunday morning. ! And it will remain a favourite for years to come. Every single pancake is perfect! Their portions are ridiculously generous and you never leave disappointed! I have pretty much tried them all! But I particularly enjoy The Buffalo Bull and The PiCOWsso.Ā

I donā€™t have a sweet tooth, so I have never ordered from the sweet fillings menu ā€“ however I have tried them from otherā€™s that have ordered, and itā€™s really good!

Word of advice: COME HUNGRY and donā€™t be silly and order anything BUT a pancake!! If you want a burger ā€“ go to a burger joint. Here you come for the pancakes!!

Great food! Friendly staff! Loved my biltong pancake! BUT.... please inform your waiters about the importance of bees (which are endangered) to our environment and ask them NOT TO SQUASH THEM. We will be be back.

A pleasant surprise!!!

The service was good and we had a rather charming waitress.

We had the filter coffee, cappuccino, iced coffee, chocolate milkshake, scones and pancakes. The iced coffee and milkshakes were absolutely delicious. The pancakes were tasty. We initially received a rock hard scone but this was subsequently replaced by a warm, tasty gigantic scone.

The restaurant has a cow themed style and is rather quirky.

Overall, a pleasant Sunday afternoon!!!

Fantastic little place! Friendly service and great food! The pancakes are amazing, you HAVE to have a pancake when coming here. Brilliant way to end the day.

Picked up some pancakes here on the way to sun city.
Im not the biggest pancake fan but these were not so bad... The sweet pancakes were filling but had too much ice-cream in comparison to the topping which you select which didnt do it for me !!

Service was absolutely the worst! Got in about 10AM only customers in the shop, wait over 20 min for two coffee's and two hot chocolates. Ordered x2 breakfast pancakes two sweet pancakes. We waited another 30 min for this. We should have realised then to run!!! My sons breakfast pancake had a cockroach on it. It was well cooked, so it leaves the mind in doubt as to the cleanliness of the kitchen. When I brought this to the attention of the manager, an abrupt "sorry" was uttered. We left immediately, and were presented with the full bill, bearing in mind we did not eat the clearly contaminated meals! I would suggest to drive past this one. It is not worth the aggravation the the health risk!Ā Looking at the reviews below I am not alone!!

This spot in Harties is a very cute place with a variety of pancakes to choose from. Homey and warm atmosphere with good prices and friendly service.

The setting is calming, My friends says the pancakes are great, yet the service delivery sucks, We has to wait a good 15 minutes for a soda and beer and 35 minutes for one tramezzini, not to mention before I got there, My friends had to wait for a very long time for pancakes, by the way: there were a handful of customers in the restaurant at the time. So no excuses.

Slow service - the food definitely was not worth the wait. Rather expensive for what you get. Terrible spelling on the menu is at least worth a chuckle!

The last time i was there i was disappointed its like they now know they are "famous" so they no longer have to do the extra effort. The decor is fabulous but im here to eat. Nice to see a nicely decorated place but my plate must be the same. Wont go back.

My second time here, and was really disappointed by their bar one pancake. It sounds great, and when you see it, you start salivating. And then you taste it... Not So great. Not sure if they used the savoury batter, but the actual pancake really wasn't sweet. And I expected the bar one sauce to have more cocoa AND more sugar. Especially to make up for the pancake. But nope. Really one of those moments where I realised I could have done so much better at home.

Cute little place to grab a pancake if you're in the area, however do think this venue could do with a little updating and upgrading. The cinnamon and sugar pancakes were quite tasty. The bacon, cheese and mushroom pancake had a lovely filling but the mushroom sauce served along with it wasn't great. The service was a little slow and unfriendly which negatively impacted on the relaxed atmosphere. Also the place could use a good cleaning!

We've been coming here for years but somehow I never noticed the upstairs seating.
So it's clearly not as small as I remembered.

The service is as slow as always, so don't be in a hurry when you come here.

Savoury pancakes were pretty good (and big) but drenched in cheese sause.

We were quite disappointed with the chocolate milkshakes and the chocolate ice cream filled pancakes which were unfortunately very tasteless. Possibly it's due to the ice cream not being as sweet as we're used to.

The scones were well...interesting but still tasty.

Toasted sandwiches & burgers were pretty good.

Disclaimer* - I was here a short while ago and have taken my time getting around to writing this review but, I had a wonderful Bar One sauce, vanilla ice cream and nuts pancake from this spot!

There is a valid reason that 'Pick a Pancake' is always full on a Sunday morning and it really is an old faithful when it comes to a Harties Sunday road trip and all things kitsch (cow figurines everywhere - check). Although it may not be fine dining - it lives up to its 'Pick a Pancake' reputation and I really enjoyed the experience (and sugar overdose). I actually felt like I was eating my breakfast in a tree house. (I will find the photos and add them soon).

*Recommendation: Another plus for me is the fact that this spot is both pet and kid friendly. There really were a lot of young families around!

Old and dated. Service varies. They have some interesting pancakes on the menu but I find them thick and doughy. Eat the filling and leave the pancake.
