Review Africanswiss Restaurant - Hartbeespoort

Always a favourite restaurant to visit in the Hartebeestpoort Dam area. A casual, mostly outdoor dining area, relaxing atmosphere with delicious German food all freshly prepared. The host and one of the chefs, Michael who is Swiss and together with his South African wife, they own and run this restaurant. There is a bar available with a play area for younger children. A great place to while away an afternoon.

Had the Seabass today. Was one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. The owner made us feel at home. His passion for the dishes he presents is totally worth the try. Will recommend to family and friends!

This is not my first time at this restaurant and it's still the same awsome place. You feel at home and relaxed. The owners who is also a professional chef is friendly and explains the menu to new customers and then chat a little just to make you feel at home. The have some nice beer on tap.

A rustic, tranquill, amazing place with wonderful hosts and delicious pizza's. Thank you to all, it was a lovely morning and lunch we had there

This place delivers, the food is great, the place is beautiful if you like nature and humble settings, our waiter was clueless and didn't bring us anything we asked for but Mike makes up for all his staff shortcomings, he is a brilliant host and always welcoming with a smile on his face. The accomodation is very spacious with beautiful views of the dam and surrounding. The best thing about this place is pet friendliness, so you can bring your dogs with...

This place is so beautiful and locate between mountains and very close to the Haartbeestpoort Dam. The food is delicious and the staff is superb. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. The rooms are also clean and it is self catering but there is a superb restaurant as well.

The pizza was out of this world! The beers were ice cold. The hike was interesting. Seriously a great little find! We'll definitely be back.
Garry Oldfield
We stopped here after a hike at Hennops and it was exactly what we needed! We were met by the owner who was very graceful about how dusty and sweaty we were! We sat outside although there is ample indoor dining. The waiters were young, but so friendly, helpful and attentive - well done ladies! There are a few resident dogs on site who don’t pester you one bit and are super friendly. We ate pizza 🍕 and burgers 🍔 and were VERY happy with the food! Our burger patties were slightly overdone, but we are food snobs and enjoy medium rare meat and burgers - HOWEVER, they were packed with flavour and “home made” as opposed to patties from Checkers or PnP. We also had the best lockdown coffee ever!!! We will definitely be back! The owner takes a keen interest in this restaurant and it shows. Un-related tips: the drive from Hennops to the restaurant was at most 14km, past NECSA (government owned energy plants) - just be aware of the potholes on this stretch of road and drive slower.
Natasha Rizzo
Awesome pet friendly place. We only stopped over for a drink on the way home. The staff were excellent. Great service. Nice outside area, very relaxed vibe. They even have a hiking trial. We just came back from one so didn't get to use it but will go back to try it sometime. I know it's a German Swiss restaurant so my point not really valid but only suggestion if I could make one is just to add a few more vegetarian options on the menu. Would have stayed for lunch if there was something I could eat. No fault of the restaurant, as I say, it's German and it's meant to be meat.

Thank you for serving us sourdough pizza this afternoon, oh wow, it was just amazing! The crust was perfect and the flavors delicious. Compliments to the chef. Die pizza war sehr lecker!

Best Eisbein in the North West...Crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Cheese Fondue was also a winner. The owner Mike and his wife are really passionate about their business. Service was excellent!!
Rob smith

Lovely place to stop by, ribs are fall off the bone, German sausages are hand made with care. Goes down well with an Erdinger. Just an all round lekker place. Some good options for gluten free peeps.
Daleen Swanepoel
Cosy setting next to the mountains on your way to Harties. German cuisine prepared to perfection. Owner so friendly, making his rounds to al the guests. Staff friendly and attentive. A must visit. 🤤 🤤
Brenda-lee Kinsey
Peaceful and the best part is the owner actually visits your table and engages you in conversation. Theres also an interesting 800m hike up to the lookout tower where you experience the most amazing views.

As a vegan I do not generally expect to find anything I can eat outside of urban areas, but at this restaurant the manager organised a pasta dish specifically for me, and it was the best pasta I've eaten since becoming a vegan. My mum (not a vegan) also loved the food. So much that we stopped there again on our return from holiday. The manager was kind enough to go and personally purchase some items so that my vegan-friendly dish could be recreated. So the service is excellent, the food is delicious, and it will definitely be somewhere we take our international visitors for a great local experience.

Great experiences to stay and to visit this place, a stone throw away from Hartbeespoort dam. Wonderful accommodation an ideal place for a peaceful gateway, events and private functions. But I have to say the food here! Delicious, homemade desserts compliments to the chef, a place to visit when you are in the area. Oh just to add you must try the Sunday lunch
Kristi Kirstein
Best ribs I've had in a very long time!! My boyfriend had the lamb shank, which was also lovely! Very friendly staff. If you are looking for a chilled place with great food - this is the place to go. Don't expect a 5star restaurant scene, but you can expect 5star food for sure!
Johanna Pillinger
A truly African "bush" setting, very relaxing atmosphere. Friendly staff, and Michael, the German Swiss owner, cooked us a special meal to cater for dietary requirements. It was very tasty. Thank you, Michael and staff, for two very special lunches! Johanna, Johannesburg.
Laetitia Coetzee
Excellent food and beer and a lovely setting and atmosphere. The veal dish and Weis beer are my favourites.

Good wine, amazing food and a beautiful setting. The owner Micheal is an awesome guy which added to the great experience.

I have already spread the word to my friends ,the food was so delicious and everything that they do, they do with love. AfricanSwiss Restaurant is a best place to be with your family. I love it

This is by far best Restaurant in SA!!! Infact, my Wife and I just came back from a month in Europe, and we tried all the restaurants (20 or even more)... let me tell you all, NOTHING tasted closed to Mike's food at AFRICANSWISS Restaurant!!!!! Bravo Mike.... your food is absolutely marvilous!!! The 5-star is an under rating! We tried his new dish...vitello veneto (veal with a tuna patee)...WOW!!!!!! Amazing!!! Mitch & Cisca

Short and sweet. Been coming here for more than 10 years. Never had a bad meal. Always good to see my old friend Mike. Every dish is great. Ambience excellent
Werner Stoltz
My wife and I had a great experience at AfricanSwiss! We were met with a warm welcome, enjoyed great food and enjoyed the company of the owner, Mike. We will certainly be back soon!
Kim Myers
What an amazing little gem in harebeespoort. The authentic food is fresh and the personal attention and staff are incredible. Great for animal and nature lovers
Annetjie Griffin
Mike and staff are the greatest hosts ever. Great conversations with Mike and great rustic atmosphere. We will def come back. The food eisbein, potato . We loved everything, thank you Mike wish you all the success.
Amanda Sikisiki
The owner is very friendly ❤️ I loved our experience. The ribs were great and massive, loved them! Definitely coming back
Anle Pelster
Lovely hosts, would definately go there again for the creative gin cocktail priced R35. The wild oysters (pricey at R30 each) but INCREDABLE! The beers is also an experience with the added German snaps. Outdoor African ambience and can do with an update. The food was a dissapointment, salmon overcooked and we were especially sad with the famous eisbein which was dry and lacked flavour. Drink yes, food only oysters
Denise Le Roux
Mike specially prepared a Veal Schnitzel that was way above average. One cannot get this anywhere that I know of. Great to experience food from the Heart and traditional. Oysters to die for as well. Highly appreciated and I would highly recommend.
Attie le Roux

We were a group of 11 people and the friendly owner Michael suggested to prepare a platter with all the different cuisines he has to offer. It was a great experience and we will definitely be back. The food was tasty and fresh. Thank you!
Andre Keartland
Lovely Bavarian/Swiss style food. We had a German family platter, so we had a chance to try a variety of the grilled meat dishes. Everything was very tasty, although not fancy. The owner, Michael, is a delight - very passionate about his product. I would heartily recommend this venue.

This beautiful rustic piece of Africa is simply a lovely place to chill.
You turn off the road towards Harties and in a moment you in your own beautiful piece of Africa.
Place for kiddes and nice hikes.
Mike the owner and his lovely wife, Lizzy, are lovely hosts and very hands on.
I have been enjoying AfricanSwiss for the past 6 years, and visiting Jhb would not be the same without a few visits to them.
The food is excellent, traditional German European cuisine, but also with a splash of Africa. The food is fresh and good value for money.
It is certainly not outdated, it has captured what the bush is like without getting lost in technology and latest trends.
It is what it is. And it is lovely.
Just relax and take in the beauty of the surroundings as you enjoy some really good food and hospitality.
Gio
0765094590
Delicious pork belly with cracking skin and very large pizzas at reasonable cost. Owner, chefs and waiters friendly. Easy to access on R512. Children friendly.
Carin
Nice restaurant, with awesome german/swiss cuisine, and also some pizza's.
Schnitzels are very good, and the sausages with potato salad
Pork belly and the goulash 👌🏻
Nice stop for a quick lunch
Ugnidoog
The food is very good. Tasty and fresh. But the dogs walking in between the tables (one looking like it needed medical attention) did not do it for me. The setting is good but the PLACE IS RUN DOWN AND DATED!!!
TRICIA
The Food is amazing and not pricey, however the place is in serious need for an upgrade.. Overall, its not a place to host a party or so.. The manager is hands on and the stuff is fast and well trained
Ivan Marais
Good- Food, general service, manager and setting.
Bad- Took 45 minutes to get our first drinks, more than an hour to get our food. The restaurant/dining areas looks warn down and in need of some desperate TLC.
Lauras World
Although a little run down, I thoroughly enjoyed our stop at this rustic, African bush setting over the long weekend.

I took a quick walk around and there it was.. Erdinger Weissbier!!
This Hefeweizen style beer brewed by Erdinger Weissbräu in Erding, Germany is in the top three of my favorite beers from my trip to Oktoberfest in Munich!

Mike the owner, was both attentive and friendly to us making recommendations about our beer choice and despite this not being fancy or upmarket by any means, we enjoyed our first visit.

The menu boasts both traditional Swiss and German food, but more importantly CHEESE FONDUE!! One of my favorites!!!

*Recommendation: If its delicious German beer and food you are craving and you don't mind a no-frills venue that needs a little TLC, I would definitely recommend stopping by for one of their Erdinger Weiss beers.

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

This place has potential but is definitely lacking something at the moment.

The good... the service is great (very friendly staff) & the food is fresh & reminds me of a home-cooked meal. The prices (& portions) are also very reasonable.

My husband had the chicken curry & although it was "good", it wasn't anything special. My friend had the German pizza & although the dough was good & the pizza was properly cooked in a pizza oven, there was nothing "German" about the pizza, especially the sausage which seemed to be boerewors (or something similar) if I'm not mistaken. I had the pork belly which was very nicely cooked (crispy crackling) & the sauce it came with was delicious. It was supposed to come with sauerkraut but that was not sauerkraut, just plain cabbage.

The bad... now & then you get a whiff of a sewerage-type smell & the bathrooms are not on par, there wasn't even running water.

I think on a summers day this would be a good option if you are looking for a beer garden vibe with pub food.
Nelson Fernando Borda Beltran
beautiful food amazing service and great atmosphere... big sugestión for come. the best eisbein I've had in SA so far...by Far..we were attended by the owner himself...
Candice Mcleroth
They served us the last bit of beer from an old keg and mixed it with new beer. After we requested fresh beer as we saw what the barman was doing, the owner came over and was incredibly rude. The sewerage smell that wafted over every now and then didn't help. I'm super disappointed as it sounded great and we were looking forward to coming here. We won't be back here. Pity.
Byron Fraser
The manager was super rude, the keg was finished, when we asked them to not mix the quarter filled old beer, that had been sitting there for 5 minutes, with the new beer. After we requested that, the manager came and made us feel super uncomfortable. We most certainly will not be back.
Stephanie Oechslin
Outside seating only. Limited drinks available. We visited the restaurant at 18:30 on a public holiday. When we asked if we could order pizza we were told they would have to check the heat of the pizza oven and get back to us.Some of the pizzas were cold when they eventually arrived. When the pizza was brought to the table we were informed the other meals would only now be cooked as only one person was cooking .4 meals were presented on plates and one on a tile, despite us being one of two occupied tables in the "restaurant". Tried to order calamari from the menu but were informed there was none available.Food overpriced. Would definitely not recommend this restaurant.
Ralph Tendai Kandiwa
The food was great , Loved every bite and service was unorthodox BT a wonderful variation to ur normal diner experience. Lastly the beer is awesome . Going back for more
Carmen Horn
Great lunch experience, we had the Bavarian platter to share and everything about it was perfect. The pork belly was crispy and juicy, the frikkadel flavoursome and the bratwurst was authentically German. Don't forget the Erdinger Weiss draft on a hot day, it complimented our meal and we'll be back for more.
Sam Van Der Walt
What a gem on the Harties road. Casual garden dining, with the most fabulous German food! Mike insisted that we try fresh Weiss beer & he was right, it's great! We had the Bratwurst, potato salad & kraut. & the Caesar Salad. I thought my husband was going to fight me for the last of the salad! :) It's been a long time since we've had such good German/Swiss food!
Jo
African Swiss is a true gem- their Eisbein was the best I have ever tasted in the world- the crackling was sensational and the meat so tender, I will be dreaming of it for a long time! We actually went there specially for the Raclette and Cheese Fondue-and I'm so glad we did. The cheese in both of the dishes was so more-ish, we finished every last drop
. And the fondue had just the right amount of Kirsch in it. The chocolate mousse cake for dessert was so creamy, it tasted like pure chocolate. All homemade by Mike the owner- very impressed! And our waiter Prince deserves a mention too. So efficient and a great, gentle sense of humour to match! Definitely worth a drive out- which only took 45 mins even in traffic!
Sonia Pita
Super awesome restaurant. One of the very best restaurants I've been to. I highly recommend it. Such fantastic tasty food and friendly staff
Corne Sassenberg
Absolutely good quality food and good service.Prince was our waiter and a pleasure. Their Eishbein and Pork Belly was out of this world.A definate must.☺
Karen Christene Van Wyk
This was an awesome place. Our waiter, Marko, was extremely friendly and very helpful. We had a chat with the owner as well who was also very friendly. I can say, hands down, that not only the ribs, but all the food was absolutely delicious. I ratw the food 5 stars in my review, only because the 10 star option is not there.
All in all, well done boys. This restaurant was amazing. Thank you.
Jane
This evening's experience at African Swiss was exceptional! The atmosphere was warm, cosy and relaxed, the service was friendly and the food was out of this world. We would recommend it to anyone!
Foodster
While this is not quite the upmarket restaurant it used to be, Mike remains a great host and the food is always superb. We went there on Saturday and ordered a family platter. When we expressed our disappointment at the volume of food presented to us, Mike promptly offered more at no extra charge and we had more than enough (really good) food to eat.

The service on this particular occasion was a bit slow, but this hadn't been a problem thus far so I'll write that off to this specific waitress.

Dish cleanliness rating 6/10 - had to send back a glass and two forks to have them replaced with clean ones.
Nicola Scott
Just had the most brilliant long lunch at Swiss Africa - the attentive service, relaxed atmosphere and exceptional food made it really outstanding. We had Eisbein, Pork Belly and Goulash as mains and they were the best our party has ever had - both in and out of Germany. The accompanying mash potato and the potato salad were heavenly. Topped off with an excellent apple strudel. Thank you Mike, we will be back soon!
Chad Mellis
Had a lovely winters afternoon in the garden sipping on wine and listening to music. The food was good and the waiter was even better. Well done! I would recommend if you keen for a relaxed a afternoon.
Jes
Outstanding. Delicious food using ingredients of exceptional quality. The bush setting is unbeatable. Brilliant service and the food came quickly. Huge portions!
Stuart
If you have not had the pleasure of the "African Swiss" food experience and that's not to mention the delightful and entertaining conversations that are compulsory with the owner Michael then you are missing out
Tracey Smorenburg
Can't rate them as they couldn't even put together a cup of coffee. No service, no management - absolutely diabolical service! It's not that difficult to give a client a menu!!!! We left after being ignored for 10 minutes and there was no one else in the restaurant!
Beckerj645
Its been, I think, about 8 years or so since my last and latest visit, and I was very glad to find that African Swiss had retained all the things that made me love it the first time. The food, service and atmosphere are great and accurately reflect the owner, Michael's, insistence on his guests have a truly memorable visit.OK, the service does not have the speed of a McDonalds, but then, I don't go to African Swiss as part of a "speed dating" process, but rather to enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings, the quality of the food and the pleasure of Michael's unique charm flavouring the entire experience. When you go, if possible, engage with Michael, he is a well travelled guy, with a diverse background and a life full of eclectic events and wisdoms learnt. My advice, go twice, once for lunch and then again for dinner, where you are truly eating under a million stars.Michael, thank you, I will try not to let it be another 8 years before I'm back - Jonathan

Absolutely lovely! Great rustic atmosphere and great food! Owner and the staff members super friendly. Kids loved it as well and the pizzas were absolutely divine!
Andre Wynand Van Niekerk
We are regulars at African Swiss and will most probably remain regulars for the rest of our lives. I have to say I remeber the first time I stepped into African Swiss I was a bit hesitant but to my utter delight we stayed and fell in love with this rustic, comfortable restaurant.

I am going to make a statement now that I say with great trepidation. I do believe that African Swiss does make the best Pizza I have ever had. The fermented sour dough base they use is simply amazing and one can taste the absolute freshness of the ingredients used in the base sauce as well as the toppings. I love the fact that they do not have standard pizzas but that you have to build your own out of a selection of beautiful and tasty toppings.

Truly a restaurant for every season and occasion. Their barman makes excellent cocktails and their food is always good.

I am extremely proud to be a regular patron of this wonderful establishment.

Found this place on zomato, so decided to try it out. The most authentic african experience with German home Cooked food it all takes a bit long because!!! It is all prepared as you order no old pre prepped food amazing!!! And beer is guaranteed fresh we will be back. Oh and ps an awesome outdoor projector!
Johan C Botha
This must be one of the most awesome hidden culinary gems. Been coming to the venue for at least 2 years and always diving into the amazing pizza. Today I decided to be more adventurous and went for the Bavarian Platter. What a stunning experience. Tastiest platter I've ever had and the pork belly does not have it's equal in SA. The owner's involvement really makes the difference and the friendly staff just rounds off everything!! Fantastic discovery!!!
Zoë Dorothy Brentano
Good food, decent prices and very friendly staff. Stopped off here for breakfast before going on the hike they have. Would recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful relaxing breakfast
Martie Van Vreden
Awesome atmosphere, suburb cuisine and brilliant service. This is an absolute must visit restaurants if you are in the area. I realy enjoy African Swiss.
Sydney Pillemer
Amazing food and brilliant service. It's so uncommon to have an owner that enjoys chatting to common patrons but this place welcomes you with open arms and a welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely come here over and over again.
Gordon James
Try the Oven Roasted Pork Belly. Well cooked, melts in your mouth... looooooooord!!!! The Buitenverwachting completed the process. Mmmhhhhh
Wande Makalima
They make the best rids in town and they melt in your mouth.Michael the host keeps you entertained before and after the meal. The in the background music is on point 👌
Anastasia Natasha Trataris-Rebisz
The food was sublime! The fondue was so amazing we had to remind ourselves that we were in public to keep ourselves from licking the bowl! The prawns were phenomenal! Highly recommended! Hubby and i give it 4 thumbs up

Waitress looked six months pregnant tight fitting t shirt. The table was dirty and was cleaned with what looked like one a t towl it was so filthy it was black with filth. Needless to say we didn't eat paid for drinks and was assumed that change R 33 was keept by sane Waitress had to ask for change and didn't get all of said change. Wouldn't put feet back in premises ever.

Don't let the informal setting fool you... The food at African Swiss is of a very high quality. We dined there tonight. The owner was welcoming and engaging and nothing was too much trouble for our waiter, Pecs. My husband, daughter and I shared a platter as a starter (I think it is named the Biergarten Platter). Having been to Germany, Switzerland and Austria, I can safely say that the Bratwurst on the platter was as good as anything served in Europe. The "frikkadel" was excellent and the pork belly tasty. The potato salad served with the platter was a typical German potato salad (no mayonnaise). It also comes with sauerkraut. My husband had the Wiener Schnitzel for mains and thought it was excellent. I decided on a dessert rather than a main and was not disappointed by the chocolate mousse cake (any chocoholic's dream) served with berries. In short: This restaurant is worth a drive from Pretoria/Johannesburg just to sample their very well prepared and authentic food. Erdinger weissbeer on tap, straight out of Bavaria. (Also a kiddies play area.)

Found this stunning garden restaurant on our way back from sun city. Great German food with friendly service and great value.
Even worth an afternoon trip from jhb.
Brian Duguid
Lovely meal-will definitely be back!Very welcoming host and staff-Also close to Pecanwood-the menu is broad and food is incredibly well prepared !
On our way back from Haarti we veered off the road to AfricanSwiss.
Tucked away amongst the trees we enjoyed the casual ambience of this African afternoon away from the four ways and sand of the city.
The menu is a 1 (one) pager but filled with home comforts from lamb shank to beer battered hake and your classic steaks.
A must have is the pork belly, served with a mushroom sauce and fresh veggies.
The cocktails are full shot, full spirited long tasters that that enhance the experience.
Overall great venue for an afternoon away, toilets need some attention.
Rynhard Van Der Westhuizen
I am a senior chef at Escondido Tapas and Wine and I was fortunate to work in St. Moritz in Switzerland. So it was really like I was ding Swiss in South Africa. The food was absolutely divine. Soft tender veal with a delivate white wine sauce, served with crispy soft delicious rosti. My fiance has been nagging me to go here for their Gorgonzola Gnocchi. And African swiss did not disapoint. The rest of my family very particular when it comes to food, loved the food specially the smaller elements on the plate like to potato salad, mash and sauer kraute. The ambiance amazing and relaxed. Great place to have a sunday drive to. Thank you very much. Merci danke viel maal
Annuska Meyer Bodenstein
Had REALLY REALLY GOOD CALIMARI SNACK - Fried and grilled. Staff are very friendly. Had a nice relaxing evening at the bar. Will definitely book accommodation and a Spa treat soon.
Rufus Andrew
I'm sitting here with my wife and kid and waitingfor ever for our food. Mike the owner isn't here and the staff seems totally clueless. Wont come here again for a long time.
Jan
Stopped by for a family lunch, immediately shown to a table, waited quite a while for a drink order to be taken, and also for the table to be cleaned after the previous patrons. We then ordered and this is where it went horribly wrong, nearly an hour an a half wait, and never a waiter in sight. Eventually found someone who was either the owner or manager and queried the waiting time, he was extremely rude and said they were having a busy day. The food eventually turned up, and was beyond disgusting, the Weiner schnitzel was tough, my pork belly was inedible, the mixed vegetables, cauliflower out a packet was ice cold and the fries were oily. The children had burgers which they didn't like either. The owner / manager came by to ask how our meal was and he didn't like the fact that we complained and said it was terrible. While sitting waiting, 2 people got up and walked out the table next to us were also complaining. Lovely setting, but the owner needs to be a bit more hands on.
Ilinda Du Preez
So difficult to rate this one. Want to give it a 5 and then other times a 2. Mike the owner very hands-on. Love the dogs strolling around and the outside bush setting. Hate the open kitchen where you see the flies and bugs sitting on the food. Love the thin crusted pizzas with interesting toppings hate the extremely long waiting period. Such a good menu, excellently prepared but if you are squeamish...... don't look at the kitchen.
Ria Fraser @CityFlavours
African Swiss has great wood oven pizzas and the rest of the food is also good. The decor is simple, it almost have a tent like feel to it with a warm fire going in the Bush.
Francois Marais Van Zyl
Exquisite Swiss and German food in a beautiful bush setting. Kids friendly and homemade original wood fire traditional pizzas that the kids can prepare themselves.Best chicken livers in Jozi.Owner, Mike always on hand to suggest the following course.Nice gluhwine for those cold winter days and a cozy firepit to relax around and kuier.

Just had the pleasure of great hospitality
from Mike and his team and the best food ever! The lamb shank and pork belly we had was exceptional. Unfortunately you only allow 5 stars instead of 6.
Jacques Coetzer
What an awesome little place. My wife and myself stayed here for our aniversary, and what a treat. The food was excellent. My wife had a pizza and I had the eisbein. The best we ever had. Thanks Mike for your hospitality. A definite must.
