Review Portugalo Restaurant - Fourways

Subramanyam Pratapa
Our go to place for hanging out with friends. There is something for everyone here. You see all age groups of people. So many beautiful restaurants, casino to play, movies, food courts, arcade, bowling, laser tag, plays, desserts, shopping, everything. This place is also quite safe that we haven’t heard of any incidents that we are aware of. The false ceiling and the fountains give it European vibe. You will take loads of pictures here. A must visit for anyone

This is definitely a must go place for those who've never been there, the place is beautiful and it's warm inside so there's no need to overdress. Amazing activities to do inside if going as a group also an amazing place for a date with amazing restaurants and bars. I've been there four times this year that's how I've fallen in love with the place. NEXT TIME I'M GOING TO THE CASINO🤞

It was an awesome place. I visited last week here for Rugby final match. CASINO is also very good here. Overall I would definitely recommend this place for hangout.

I was here at Montecasino merely to meet and greet with our President that visited SA for BRICS Summit. From the outside is a nice and fancy place. Not sure how does it look inside the room an all other facilities as I was only outside and at the Reception inside area. I am sure its a great place as couple of Head of State was staying here.

Superb place for a hangout anytime of the day in Johannesburg . It feels like you have come to the tuscany region of Italy. The place is a huge indoor air conditioned place full of lovely restaurants, bars, cafes , shops, games and movies and theatres. Every nook and corner of it is insta worthy.

I had the privilege of attending the 2023 Rugby World Cup finals at the Monte Casino Boktown open fanpark, and it was an unforgettable experience. Thank goodness i made advance bookings an got my arm bracelet to gain access on the day. The venue's atmosphere was electric, with fans from all over the world coming together to celebrate the sport we love. The outdoors big screen TV provided a larger than life view of the game, and the picture quality was top notch. It felt like I was right there in the stadium, cheering for my team. The seating arrangements were comfortable, and there was plenty of space to move around and interact with fellow rugby enthusiasts, and also plenty of space for dancijg and jiving when we scored points. What truly set this venue apart was the incredible sense of community. Everyone was there to support their teams, but there was a mutual respect and camaraderie that transcended rivalries. The staff was friendly and efficient, ensuring that we had a great time from start to finish. The food and beverage options were diverse, with a wide range of delicious snacks and drinks to keep us energized throughout the game. The cheers, chants, and the collective roar of the crowd during pivotal moments in the match were spine tingling. In conclusion, the Monte Casino Boktown is a rugby lover's paradise. Watching the 2023 Rugby World Cup finals there was an experience I'll cherish forever. If you ever get the chance to attend an event at this venue, don't miss it, you won't be disappointed!

Excellent venue to host an event especially the Ballroom. Variety of restaurants makes the place vibrant. The environment is very secure. The security personnel are vigilant all the time. ATMs are readily available in the casino area. Various hotels present a variety of choices.

Fireroom was awesome !! The fillet on the bone and bang bang chicken as well as sushi on fire were absolute hits. Not so much their dessert as it was very dry, plain and simple.

Beautifully designed with an Italian ruin vibe. Good service, many cafes for brunch, lunch and dinner. Try the Malt as you unwind after work.

It was my 1st time there but everything was amazing and the food was top notch.

We had dinner at the Fire Room last night. The food was outstanding and the service great. We shared the Fillet Tataki to start followed by the Fire Roll and Tigers vs Dragons. My mouth is still watering!!

What a beautiful experience I had! I recommend it! There's no entrance fee. Just a lot of fun things to do and restaurants to eat from.

👌🏽👌🏽 Very clean. Perfect for the whole family. There's a cinema, casino, games (arcade, bowling, etc) and lovely restaurants. The overall design is awesome, it has an Italian feel. Sort of feels like a night out in Italy. You will understand it once you get there. So go go go 🤭

Saw The Nutcracker : Joburg Ballet, on Saturday 10 December. Magnificent performance, wonderful Theatre and very helpful ushers. A person in our group misplaced his phone and the usher hankfully retrieved it. Thank you. Overall, getting into the parking area and main entrances was fairly smooth.

The restrooms are squeaky clean, the office spaces look like a little heaven and the area gives you so much peace. Ate breakfast at La Rosa which was wonderful (could not take pictures because I spent most of my time talking). Very beautiful. Heading there again sometime soon.

What shocking food from start to finish. A real embarrassment in my book to proper Portuguese food! Starter: calamari “ LM style”. Unfortunately there was nothing LM about it. Tasteless, and nothing at all what you expect LM style to be ( and I have been to Moz and eaten fantastic prawns and calamari there). My wife ordered Prawn Rissoles and they were totally overcooked and like a rock. Off to a bad start....<br/><br/>Ok, let’s move onto Main. We both ordered 12 Prawns, LM style. R198 a plate each. OMG they were probably the worst I have eaten in my entire life. They were floury and fell apart just trying to get them out the shell. Even worse, the basting sauce they were done in was terrible and watery. I threw my sauce away off the plate and tried to add some bottled peri peri I found to make them taste like something vaguely edible. My wife gave up on hers and just let the waiter take the plate away. Informed manager how poor the food and prawns were, he said he would speak to the “chef”. No offense but if there is a chef in the kitchen I would eat my hat. It’s probably the guy who mops the floors too. <br/><br/>We knew we were on a hiding to nothing, but weren’t footing the bill, so we thought well let’s carry on... next in this epic failure was dessert: <br/><br/>Wife had the Portuguese custard tartlets. They were the only decent thing we ate. You get two small ones on plate for R50 or so. Nothing else. I had the chocolate mousse, passable but not great, very stiff with a boudoir biscuit thrust in the middle of it looking very out of place I must say :-) <br/><br/>Then I ordered the ice cream and chocolate sauce and I didn’t expect much. That’s exactly what I got. Mediocre Vanilla ice cream with a puny amount of the the most awful “homemade chocolate sauce” I think I have ever eaten. It didn’t even taste like chocolate, and was so runny it was actually almost pink in color. OMG disgusting. <br/><br/>Sorry guys, I rate this quality of food as much lower than the Sp*r, and definitely below what anyone should get as a restaurant meal. I won’t be back and I can’t recommend you to anyone. I would rethink my food totally if I was the restaurant owner. Ouch, embarrassingly bad. Real Portuguese people would absolutely cringe.

Only acceptable starter was the calamari. Mains were cold, dry and bland. Sent food back to receive the same food back... cold. Fish main was undercooked, pork and clams was a serving of boiled, tough pork with tasteless gravy. Steak was cooked correctly, but again it tough and chewy, the port sauce... tasteless... Very disappointed with the food at this restaurant, I would rather recommend going to Beira Alta for a 5 star food experience at the same cost.

Worst trained staff ever. Could hardly speak English properly. Got the drinks order wrong. Got the meal order wrong twice. Had to be reminded to bring cutlery. Had to come back and confirm our order for two Kahlua coffees and then still brought us Irish coffees... The food though was very good.. But unfortunately the experience was terrible.

Overall, my experience at this restaurant was nothing more than okay.<br/><br/>Sat down and ordered the rump, egg and chips and from ordering to where you receive your meal is a lengthy process. Once I started eating, the waiter came to the table to check if everything was still alright and if I was enjoying my steak and I informed him that the steak was bad so he insisted on changing my meal which I appreciated but when the manager came to the table he explained how they made the steak and why one would think it doesn't have enough flavour. I've had enough steak during my lifetime to be able to identify a bad piece of steak based on taste, quality and tenderness. Let me tell you, this steak was tough!<br/><br/>I replaced it with the pork chops and potatoes as I was not informed that the steak came with crispy chips which I am personally not a fan of but for all intents and purposes, they were okay.<br/><br/>Generally, everything else on the table was okay, nothing to write home about, ironically, but if I had to face the question of would I go here again or go to Spur rather, I'd most likely choose the latter.<br/><br/>Thumbs up for the friendly waiter, good location and killer pork chops but the rest of the experience was a fail.

Disappointed for sure. Our waiter was good, but food took forever and when it did come out ofba table of 8 4 peoples meals were so fry and overcooked. When we asked for the manager, he wasnt really interested in helping and spoke to us very rudely. He questioned my friend saying have you ever eaten this before maybe thats why you think its dry.<br/><br/>We had to tell him what to do coz he wasnt even sure himself. Not a great experience and wont be back

Amazing new chef! Food was excellent! The seafood was flavorful, ignore previous reviews. Definitely worth the trip. Authentic Portuguese cuisine packed full of flavor.

Good combination of Portuguese & Mozambican food. Really loved the Bacalhau bake & so happy that there is Sumol on the menu. Good decor & good service.

12.04.2019 Pre show dinner and a catchup with my friend. I couldn't believe how quiet Monte Piazza was, considering it was a Friday night. Think everyone stayed away due to the storms.<br/><br/>We sat "outside" enjoying the fresh air, yet just covered enough to avoid the rains. Our waiter Malusi was fantastic, he knew we were taking our time with ordering in between all our chatting.<br/><br/>Lovely setup inside and out and they have a vast variety of food on their menu. For starters we ordered the Pan fried Prawns in a beer sauce, Prawn Rissoles and the Flamed up Chourico. My prawns needed a bit of spice so added their chilli sauce to it. The Chourizo was nice, not too tough to chew.<br/><br/>For drinks I had to try their Sangria, I haven't had one in a long time. They sell a 500ml for just a mere R45... I mean seriously that's a steal. 2 people can easily drink from it. Be aware of the fruit after a while, it has a kick.<br/><br/>When we told Malusi we going to the show, he showed us a separate menu that they have for people attending the show, so it's alot quicker to order. I think that's a brilliant idea. We ordered the Prego rolls, 1 Beef and 1 Chicken to share with round cut chips. The chips were delicious, the chicken prego was juicy and tender but needed more sauce. We were both not keen on the Beef one, it tasted different and was slightly chewy to eat.<br/><br/>We didn't make it to dessert due to time, but there is definitely a few options to try<br/><br/>Heard they have a new store opening.<br/><br/>Keep an eye on social media pages for more info.<br/><br/>#TheFoodMusketeer<br/>#TheFoodMusketeerEats<br/>#TheFoodMusketeerDrinks<br/>#TFMPortugalo

In Monte casino, Fourways, convenient good location. Food was good, service was good, decor above average. I will definitely visit again. If you like Portuguese food go try it out.

Great venue but there is no love in the food at all. Very basic, you can cook better at home. Not worth the money spent. Wont be coming back.

An enjoyable dinner. We ordered half chicken & chips and a chicken prego & chips. The chicken was a little on the small side but it was delicious. The chicken prego was tender and full of flavour. The thinly sliced potato chips were fresh and thoroughly enjoyed. Not fast service but service with a smile. It is not fine dining but an enjoyable meal out...

Visited Portugalo today, a sunny and particularly hot day. We sat on the side next to the Teatro entrance. I’m very sensitive to the sun and asked if we could move the couch and table into the shade. Staff were more than accommodating and even moved other tables so that we had sufficient shade. All done with a smile! I’m not into crowds and found it quiet and relaxing on this side of the building. <br/><br/>We ordered the beef croquettes for the table - lovely. Main orders were: Pork ribs, chicken and chorizo pasta, prawn & chicken curry and a prego roll. Happy tummies from all and meals were beautifully plated. <br/>For dessert, orders were: poached pears and cinnamon ice cream, strawberry cheesecake and the chocolate mousse. All highly recommended and perfect portion size. A great spot for a relaxing lunch! :) Will be back.

The service was great. We had the chorizo and prawn pies for starters which were perfectly done. I highly recommend the bacalhau com natas for mains! This was truly an authentic Portuguese experience. Well done!!

If you looking for true Portuguese cuisine, this is the place to go to! The food is excellent. The service was outstanding and the staff are friendly. I will definatly be back.

Went with friends from England. Ordered fish pie that was served uncooked and then took 30 mins to be brought back to the table after returning to waitress.
Joyce Keung
Service was a bit slow. It took the waitress around 15 minutes to come to our table to take down drinks and took even longer to take down our food. <br/>We ordered a variety of starters to share. My favorite was their calamari. I loved their chips as well! <br/>Their chocolate mousse was amazing!

Very disappointed, such a nice place and atmosphere, and I was very hungry, ordered rabbit stew and got 2 cold rabbit legs with the sauce which reminded me cetchup with water and garlic. Do you call it stew? My husband ordered pork&clams, theey brought him the dish with the same sauce which I had on my rabbit... The chef is not even Portuguese, for that price they must serve real Portuguese. We should of just returned our meals. Our friends ordered eshpetada and Prego, they were happy with their meals.

I'll be brief,<br/>The atmosphere was great, love the decor and the vibe;<br/>The staff were friendly and helpful;<br/>The food was... meh;<br/>We had the calamari tapas (starter) which was good, not mind blowing but it was the best thing we ate...<br/>I had the grilled cod fish (bacalhau) which I had high hopes for as I ate it occasionally as a kid growing up in a Portuguese-ish home. It was well cooked but a bit bland really...<br/>My wife had the chicken/prawn curry which again while the meat was cooked well, the sauce tasted honestly like it could have been a packet of Denny...<br/><br/>Maybe we should have ordered a prego roll or prawns, but I was really hoping for both authentic and tasty Portuguese food. I think we'll just go to Beira Alta next time...

Hello all, sorry for the hiatus.  A very Happy Holiday season to all readers.<br/><br/>This is a delayed review of this meal that took place on the Sunday before Christmas as I was a total slob over Christmas :P <br/><br/>On that sweltering day, I arranged to meet my friends for lunch at this restaurant.  On some background, this used to be the Ciao Baby Cuccina and the new restauranteurs have renovated the space and imbued it with elements of Portugal, eg the blue glazed tiles which were really lovely.<br/><br/>We were conducted to the upstairs section as we all wanted somewhere cool.  We were the only patrons of this section and despite that our waiter was always on hand to assist us so kudos to him.<br/><br/>Of the 2 friends with me, one is a real deal Portuguese who happens to be a chef too.  So we relied on him to give us his frank opinion of the food served.<br/><br/>We started off with 3 starters to share - Portuguese Style Calamari, Spinach & Garlic Croquette and Tia Mari's Green Beans in Batter.  The food was a little slow in coming but the sparkling conversation we shared made the wait bearable.<br/><br/>Of the 3 starters, I enjoyed the croquette most.  The calamari was decent but not wow.  The Green Beans dish was nice too but according to my Portuguese friend isn't done the traditional style.  Now a little nugget of information, not sure if the readers out there are aware that the Japanese Tempura style dishes are actually an homage to the Portuguese fritter style of dishes.  The green beans dish we had on that day was delicious but just done differently.  IMHO, the dish verily reminded me of the Vada of Indian cuisine.  <br/><br/>For mains, we went all out Portuguese.  I had always been told of signature "Bacalhau a Braz" dish by my friend and this was the ripe opportunity to try it. Though it is listed as the "Plate of the Day" ie the specials fo the day, I was pleased to hear that the Kitchen is able to prepare it.  Our other friend had the Kingklip and the Portuguese Chef settled on his favourite ever (according to him) the Pork Loin and Clams.  <br/><br/>I was really excited to be finally trying the Bacalhau a Braz dish as my friend has been telling me about it all this time.  So when our mains were delivered by our waiter, we were all ready to dive in.  My Bacalhau dish was an absolute winner.  It was decently seasoned and not over powering fishy as I had always worried about the thought of "dried salt cod" being as such.  The string cut potatoes and egg mixture which makes this dish what it is was very well done. Though my Portuguese friend commented that he would have cut the potatoes to even more "matchsticks" size.  <br/><br/>The kingklip dish was nice too.  The baby kingklip was fried and then the tomato onion relish on top didn't smother it.  The fish was still nice and juicy under the well fried skin.  <br/><br/>Unfortunately, the pork and clams dish was a total let down for my Portuguese friend.  The sauce was a sadly gloppy looking and some of the clams were not cooked through.  My friend was very disappointed with the dish as he tells us that it is not the way that how it is done back home in Portugal.  <br/><br/>We commented about the dish to the waiter when he came to clear and he called the Manager who came through and had a long conversation with my friend in Portuguese <br/><br/>All in all, I was very very satisfied with the dishes and wouldn't mind coming back to try the other bacalhau dishes and also the seafood cataplana sounded very delicious.

Have been dying to try this place out ever since it opened. We went to the Christmas Market on the public holiday, 17th December so decided to pop in for lunch.<br/><br/>It was relatively busy, so we had to wait a while for a waiter to take our drinks and food order. The food came out in a decent amount of time but we did notice a few people leave while waiting for someone to take their orders.<br/><br/>We ordered the meat platter and once it arrived, we tucked in. However the fritters were extremely oily, the livers weren't spicy, the chicken wings were very dried out and the rest of the bits and pieces were average. The best thing on the platter that I would definitely go back for was the olives. Was disappointed but have a feeling it might have just been a bad day. We sent back almost half the platter and paid our bill and left.<br/><br/>Will give it another try sometime and perhaps update this review.

Portuguese Burger - Best burger I've ever had. Those days you think to yourself when making proper homemade burgers, that nothing trumps ... well these guys have dialled your homemade burger to 11. If we as a species have progressed, this would be our proof.<br/><br/>Also, their Mariana Red wine is simply terrific. Comfort food for the soul.
Tania
Sooo delicious. Restaurants decor is stunning and service is very good. Between 5 of us we had the prego rolls ,Portuguese burgers and chicken livers . Wow all the food was well presented and delicious . Will definitely be back

No vegetarian main options available. Only 2 small tapas options or a plain salad. When I asked about vegetarian options, I was told there is a veg if the day - which is a side. Please consider to add one or 2 veggie options to menu.<br/>Waiters were however friendly and overall good service.
Carla Role Du Plessis
Be sure to get there early on show days as people enjoy grabbing lunch or dinner beforehand and the wait can get a bit long. However, the food was worth the wait! We had the prawn pasta with linguine and the beer battered hake with polenta, which were both excellent. The staff is very friendly and attentive.
Dini
Friendly service. Food was mediocre. Tried the Portuguese Chicken, expected the waiter to ask spice preference. He didn't. The peri peri sauce was not peri peri at all. Desert was good.
Sesh
The newest portuguese spot at Monte. Nice and spacious taking over the Ciao Baby spot.<br/><br/>We started with the flamed chorizo and grilled calamari, followed by the peri peri chicken and grilled prawns. As far as flavours go, it was average. Portuguese is usually for me spicier and saucier. Prawns marinade wasn't punchy enough and the round cut fries were odd. Chicken cooked well but here I needed more sauce.<br/><br/>Good wine, cocktail selection and service was attentive. I will go back as I went in on early days, I visited in late August.

Recently, we ended up at this authentic Portuguese restaurant in Montecasino and were pleasantly suprised with our experience. <br/><br/>Service: 4/5<br/>Food: 4/5<br/>Ambiance: 4/5<br/><br/>On the food side, as it was a cold day, I selected their Cataplana De Peixe Mistos. <br/>A stew-based dish with white wine, seafood, smoked bacon & chouriço.<br/><br/>An enjoyable meal and a restaurant that I would return to!<br/> <br/><br/>For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza
