Review Holi Cow - Fourways

Lorcan Carlsen
Been here for the cooking classes. Been here for the Madame Curry evenings. And I will keep coming back because the food is so amazing. And at least once a month I stop here to pick up the most buttery, filled unique curried pies (think lamb vindaloo and butter chicken pies) and the tastiest biscuits. A hidden gem in the heart of Fourways.

A Culinary Journey to Authentic Indian Flavors Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) I recently had the pleasure of visiting Yudhika & Company, and I must say, it was an extraordinary culinary experience that transported me straight to the heart of India. This restaurant offers an ambiance that perfectly complements its exceptional cuisine. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the use of an open woodfire, which lent an unmistakable authenticity to every dish. The aromas of spices and roasted masalas wafting through the air set the stage for a memorable gastronomic adventure. The menu boasts a wide array of mouthwatering options, each prepared with a dedication to preserving the true essence of Indian flavors. From the moment the first bite touched my palate, I knew I was in for a treat. The curries, a hallmark of Indian cuisine, were masterfully executed. The depth of flavors and the perfect balance of spices in each curry showcased the chef's expertise and passion. The rotis, baked to perfection, were the ideal accompaniment to the rich curries. Soft and flavorful, they provided a delightful contrast to the robustness of the main dishes. Additionally, the selection of cakes and sweetmeats was nothing short of delightful. These desserts served as a sweet symphony to conclude the savory journey. On this occasion, I opted for the crayfish curry paired with fragrant Basmati rice and soft roti. The marriage of fresh seafood with the richness of the curry was a revelation. The tender crayfish absorbed the flavors of the sauce, creating a harmonious blend of taste and texture. The Basmati rice, with its long grains and delicate aroma, was the perfect canvas for the robust curry, and the soft roti added a comforting element to the dish. I cannot recommend Yudhika & Company enough. It is a culinary haven for anyone seeking an unforgettable dining experience. Whether it's a special occasion or simply a desire for genuine Indian cuisine, this restaurant is a true gem. I am already looking forward to my next visit, eager to explore more of their tantalizing offerings. In conclusion, if you are a connoisseur of authentic Indian flavors prepared with utmost care and love, Yudhika & Company is a must-visit. Prepare yourself to embark on a culinary journey that will leave your taste buds dancing and your heart content.

Yudhika is my go-to for curry’s , sweet and savoury goodies as well as special occasions. Oh … and the essential ginger/garlic and spices. Every year she does a special order of sweetmeats for me and caters for some on my kids fussy needs. She makes the most amazing cakes … this time I had one arranged for my brothers birthday and it was amazing 🤩

Certainly different and also seemingly super popular! I honestly don’t know where to begin but I should start off by saying that by their food is definitely freshly made and is quite tasty. The staff are efficient and friendly which is quite impressive considering the chaotic mess that I had witnessed. You cannot sit and dine in this establishment. It seems as though you have to order in advance but I can’t say how that works because I haven’t seen a menu. Maybe they have different dishes everyday or it’s a set thing, I can’t really say. They did manage to assist us even though we didn’t order in advance so for future reference I’ll definitely do so because it would have been horrendous if we had driven for 1 hour and 30 minutes to find that they had nothing to sell. Pastries are amazing, they taste just as good as they look. We had the lamb curry but for myself personally it was leaning towards more of a stew than a curry in terms of flavour/spice. Uhm, I can’t give a price indication either as I didn’t see the menu. We did get 1KG lamb biryani, 1KG Lamb curry with 8 rotis, 1/2KG Sri Lankan chicken, 4 snowballs, a donut and a steamed sweet thing for roughly R800 plus. So it seems reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend but do order in advance.

All the fresh cream cakes are beyond delicious! I am a fussy fresh cream person and the cakes here are the best by far. None of the items have prices so you have to keep asking.

Great place. Very unexpected. Awesome for take aways. Had the vegetarian bean curry with rotis and some sweet almond coconut filled dumplings. Plenty of parking right in front of the door. Friendly staff. Nice garden.

Really good Durban style Indian food. Quick and efficient service. On the pricey side though

When it comes to quality old school Durban baked treats, this is as good as it gets. The best in JHB. Excellent value for money..

Great spices, excellent cream doughnuts and the mint/nut pickle divine, this is an awesome little establishment.

So I've eaten here before last year and the food was really good. I ordered again on Tuesday and convinced my colleague to order as well. My colleague said that his chicken dish lacked salt and my sugar beans also lacked salt and flavour. Neither of us are salt fanatics but the food lacked in flavour. Felt really bad because I convinced my colleague that this was some of the best home cooking.

Absolutely the best food! From savoury to sweet. It is our family treat to buy and just share all the flavours. My best is the Chicken Korma. Highly recommend Holi Cow!

So after reading about Holi Cow on Facebook and seeing all the yummy mouthwatering pics ...I just had to have a taste..... Went in around mid day .....and as you enter ....you just get aromas hitting you from all directions.....the smell of spices fills the air and actually makes you salivate and then you feel like you have been starving for hours..... I ordered the prawn curry and rice and one snowball. While waiting for my food I started to eat the snowball....it just took me back to my childhood days of eating the Wareings snowballs (anyone remember that) ....I had to order another one to take home. Got home and had my prawn curry....it was delicious.... Tastes just like home food from grandma. Will definitely be back to try more of the food. Would be really nice if we could sit there and eat as well. Looks like such a lovely place.

Your quality of products, authentic taste and value for money absolutely blows me away every time I buy a meal from your establishment. Best tasting lamb curry in Johannesburg (and amongst the top contenders in Durban as well). You should be really of representing Indian cuisine with the high standards of the great food you offer. Love it!

I can definitely recommend Holi Cow. I received prompt and professional service on a concern I had . Yudhika went over and above to ensure a happy client . Goods look and taste amazing . Will definitely be back . Thank you for a great experience

The food is delicious and great value for money. The process is simple. View menu daily on Facebook and order. The only disadvantage is the hours. They close at a fairly early hour on weekdays, 5pm. Some only finish work at this time.
Ewen Bogle
Thanks Yudika - I made your unconscious vegetarian pulao with paneer today. After doing your cooking class I can make a top class curry. I’m booked on another one. Thank you.

Really loved the food, hospitality and service. Holi Cow always is a favorite place for great indian foodie! We had the Chicken Biryani and really love it. We always love the meals and to say we had to get some fresh cream doughnuts.( Which have to be eaten on the day, or you just wasting time) Always love Holi Cow

Spent the night at Holy Cow curry cooking class! What an awesome evening... Yudhika was beyond incredible; sharing her knowledge, keeping us entertained with her sense of humor and 100% hands on. Ingredients were of the highest standard and included prawns and crayfish! Her staff were also fantastic! What a amazing team and we say thank you. We can soooo recommend attending her classes. We will certainly be back...

Bough mielie cakes on Friday. Went back on Saturday for crayfish curry, pies and fresh cream tarts. Everything was amazing. Good quality, good value home cooked food. Will be back for sure.
Marisa Charlotte Wyngaard
Always a pleasure eating from hear. From the quality of the food to the quality of the service. I bought a bottle of Chilli Mango sauce and of course my favourite mielie cake. Was scrumptious. My favourite is also the lamb bunny, chicken kofta whew and of course the crab curry. Wow as for the mango pickle to die for....
Samantha Slembrouck
Yudhika was the most wonderful host and teacher. The Festivities Course was unbelievably practical and informative. I learnt so much and had a good laugh with the wonderful people on the class. Worth every cent! And I will do many more courses. Thanks Holi Cow for a magical taste experience

Thanks for the great cooking class! Such a great evening of laughs and delicious seafood! We will be back soon!
Marisa Lee Pillay
The lamb curry and prawn breyani were good but I would not recommend the sugar beans curry. The beans were undercooked and the curry itself didn't taste nice.
Deborah Pillay
Quality and service is impeccable. Our favorite go to for all our Indian meals . Absolute favorite is the crab curry and miellie cake
Revaj Gianchand
Tried the food for the first time today. Ordered the chops chutney... The taste was great however the chops was really really tough. It made eating it laborious. Will however try the rest of the menu in time.

Wow!!! Yudhika is such a graceful, endearing and dynamic LADY! Talented and passionate about cooking and baking. Her love for cooking is an extension in the taste and quality of her meals. The presentation is a feast for ones eyes, how I enjoyed the chicken korma with roti. The chicken was so tender it melted like candy floss in my mouth and dressed in korma sauce and spices to add shooovav to my taste buds. I cannot fault Holi Cow on anything except to say how pleasantly surprised I was to see the amount of orders coming out the kitchen. Yudhika, you are the Goddess of Korma Love it and we now know where you are albeit far from the east rand.

I have the curry crab at least twice a month, it is so delish, it is with out a doubt the best I've tasted ever. Fresh, spicy, served with rice and roti.

07.09.2019 I finally made my way to Holi Cow. Friends and I have been wanting to join in one of the cooking classes.<br/><br/>This time though we were just after some cream doughnuts on our way home so decided to stop here and see if they had stock. There is an array of goodies in the shop from biscuits to sauces to pies and samosas. We got the doughnuts, some Naan Khatai, Soji and then the variety of pies caught my eye in the fully stocked fridges. As I always see Yudhika posting a out it on weekends. To be extremely honest yes they are very pricy and I was second guessing buying a box of 4 but I decided to give it a try as I usually love pepper steak pies and they had a Peppered Beef Fillet option amongst others. My sister took the Moroccan Chicken one. They have a "flavour" for all taste profiles and some are alot cheaper but I only wanted the Fillet one.<br/><br/>We baked the pies and I can Happily say it was worth the price of R50 a pie. The pie was full of tender meat and deliciously flavoured, not just full of gravy/sauce like garage pies. The Moroccan Chicken one was also nice and the family said it was a pleasant change from the normal pies we eat. Would definitely buy them again sometime and try a few of the other options.<br/><br/>Next time would like to try some of the curries on offer when having that Durban type curry craving.<br/><br/>#TheFoodMusketeer<br/>#TheFoodMusketeerEats<br/>#TFMHoliCow

Have been to Holi Cow a fair amount of times in the past and have really enjoyed the pies, pickles and mielie cakes. Curries have, at times been a hit or miss. Today for example, I ordered a fish curry and chicken korma. The fish was cooked perfectly however the curry lacked a good level of heat and the tamarind flavour it desperately needed, amounting to pretty much a tomato-heavy, non-descript curry that tasted ok. The korma however was a real problem - deviating heavily from an authentic korma, the complete lack of flavour and salt coupled with a very thin gravy resulted in a watery mouth-feel and an overiding 'boiled' flavour that was extremely unenjoyable. Even though the murkoo was delicious and fresh, I wouldn't rush back.

This is indeed the best restaurant I've been to in Johannesburg. The service, the food and the hospitality by the Owner is the best in town. Thank you Yudhika for always making us feel welcome at your restaurant... Consistent and continuously improving.

I visited Holi Cow 4 months ago when I visited SA , and it was a definite go to on my list. Although I didn't taste the food(yet), I specifically went here to order a cake for a joint party for my niece and I.<br/>I had a few requests and the Owner graciously accepted and communicated with me constantly (from SA to Japan mind you!)<br/>For anyone who hasn't tried their bhurfee cake, its an absolute stunner! They created a gorgeous cake for me that was very fitting of the theme. I loved the final touches and bursts of colour. I don't have  a picture on me but Ill post one up later on.<br/>I cant wait to try the food and other sweet treats.<br/>The shop is beautiful too with many things to catch the eye. You can buy other frozen items and also kitchenware. This store has a rustic India feel with a splash of striking modern features eg. the black and white floor tiles against the weathered carved Indian door frame.<br/>The owner is a lovely lady who is always friendly and polite. i plan on popping by again when I visit SA.

We tried a veg dish from Holi cow a few years ago and weren’t very happy.. a few months ago we heard about them again and decided to give it a second chance. We ordered the prawn curry and Durban lamb curry, both dishes were perfect, even better than home cooked! The roti was light and went very well with both dishes. The sweets offering was also pretty great, especially the belgican tarts and snowballs. Well done to Yudhika & her team.
Jillian Nyakane
My colleague had a baby shower here. It was just beginning of Spring and our table was set outside. It was beautiful, the food was alright. I think I was on a no sugar diet and didn’t have the cake although it looked divine.

Our first visit to Holi Cow was to attend one of Yudhika's cooking classes: "I love Curry". We were welcomed with the most delicious Samoosas (potato as well as chicken), they have no liquor licence, but you can bring your own wine. The class itself was a heaps of fun and very informative! We were thereafter spoiled with our own creations and some fresh roti and a delectable chocolate cake. Loved all her pickles and sauces as well as her spice range (which all came home with me!). <br/>She is open for take-aways most days and always have some beautiful sweets. Something to add to your bucket list for sure!

So everyone has been going on about the "Burfee Cake" and last Friday I had one for my Birthday. To my amazement, I was totally impressed. Soft sponge and the cake tasted great. It was not overly sweet and the macaroons were the highlight :) Enjoyed her mielie cakes over the past couple of weekends as well as the fresh cream donuts. My hubby's favorite is the snowballs which are simply divine. To my disappointment I had the soji (which is over priced for the quantity you are getting) and the crab curry(another over priced dish). Curry lacked salt and flavor. Our home made crab curry tastes much better.  Bought the pickles and they are not too bad. Will visit again for the snowballs and cakes for sure.

Finally got to taste the infamous burfi cake. For a celebratory event an order of curries, briyani, dhal, naan and cakes were made. A special request of no tomatoes on the chicken briyani and lamb curry was accomadated and these were both delicious. The butter chicken was average. Portion sizes for 15-20 was more than adequate. The cakes, 3 tiers, a turkish delight, burfi and chocolate hazelnut were all equally delicious and nicely decorated, soft sponges with decadent icing and toppings. Definitely worth it on catering for multiple people. We'll be using them again.

Excellent food with attention to detail. Food cooked to perfection. Authentic Indian dishes. Owner treats customers like her family and is amazing at building relationships. We usually buy take outs but have sat at the restaurant a few times. Her milk tart and donuts are just the best ... made to perfection. And our all time favorite is her burfee cakes! It’s a must!

Had many dishes over a period time. What I love is break away from home cooking. The concept and the passion for food is there .<br/><br/>Some dishes were fantastic the first time round - mushroon and chickpea, Sri Lankan chicken, fish curry, prawn curry etc. However, they do have a problem with consistency.<br/>Sometimes it just disappoints!<br/><br/>The mielie cake is nice, rotis are good. Biryani is below average for me.<br/><br/>Portions are generous.<br/>

Heard of this Deli through a friend staying in Joburg, so it was definitely a must have upon visit! The Deli is a very cute and quaint place, a reflection of the passion and artistry that goes into the business. <br/>We ordered the ferero rocher and the burfee cake. And to describe my experience in three words, I would say- rich, delicious aesthetic. The cake was decorated phenomenally. <br/><br/>However, we felt as if the chocolate cake was very dry. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the chocolate explosion from each bite. <br/>Personally, the macaroons placed on the top of the cake was the highlight of my experience, it was incredibly delicious, and would/could eat it at anytime/ any day.<br/>

Food was most delish, highly recommended. Curries are authentic well spiced and full of flavor. The best Indian food in JHB. Will be going back next week.

I have always read great reviews about this place and the famous burfi cake (I finally got my chance to try it). One word, delicious 😋. <br/><br/>Next time I will try out the curries and maybe even take one of Yudhika’s cooking classes 😉
James Campbell
I've been trying different curries around Fourways area and I couldn't find a single place that did a decent curry. All I got from several places was a bland stew. I found Holi Cow on FB and orderd some Lamb Curry take away from them. The meat was tender and top quality and the flavor was proper Durban Curry Style. I was very happy and will be ordering there again!
Theuns Opperman
Just had my first Holi Cow crab curry takeaway. Awesome! Be warned, though. This dish requires a serious commitment from you. Set up some sharp knives, piles of serviettes or natlappies and lots of wine. (Being naked will help! 😉) Scrape the juicy crab meat onto the fantastic roti. Scoop the sauce on. Enjoy! I also bought some of their date and cardamom jam. Brilliant on bread with lots of butter.
Samantha Moodley
Ordered takeaway lamb curry, orange crab, roti and soji. A perfect reminder of home for a Durbanite! Quality ingredients, freshly cooked and great attention to detail.
Pashnee Naidoo
I have ordered from Holi cow twice take aways and have ordered her burfee cakes for occasions. The owner is very hands on and she sources the freshest products and runs specials on the weekend which she advertises via FB and instagram. I had the vegetable Breyani with dhall and salad. The dhall was prepared in the traditional Durban Indian way with Indian drumsticks which was an awesome surprise. The vegetable breyani has to be the best take out breyani I have ever had in Jhb. I have also tasted the sugar bean curry which is also tasty however the show stopper was the naan bread, so fresh and tasty. Hubby has had the Sri Lankan chicken curry which he rates as delicious. I have also done a cooking class with Yudhika which was also an amazing and tasty experience. She also does her cakes eggless if required which is just as yummy. I will be back to try the other sweet treats and the rest of the menu.
Dale
A bit of disorder within the place and no formal structure but the food itself is delicious and I love the fact that it's cooked fresh everyday. To be safe, rather just stick to takeaways and order in advance.
Sharima Bramannan
I have just eaten the best lamb curry in joburg...so authentically Durban Indian...potatoes were perfectly soft, and the meat was so tender. And it was nice and spicy. I actually went for a barfee cake...which was delicious...barfee, almonds, cream cheese icing on a soft sponge which has cardamon in it. I heard about this place a long time ago...now that I've finally visited, will start to frequent it.
Fuzzy Lojic
Been trying alot of the food from Holi Cow. Very few disappointments. The desserts like soji, donuts and burfee cake are really nice. We loved the crab curry and the lamb curry. Roti is soft and the turkish bread worth a try. I found the breyani to not be spicy enough but loved the salad and dhal accompaniments. The food is a bit pricey but the quality is high. The owner sources fresh and local so it costs a buck. I love how when I stop by a take away, I always get drawn into the kitchen for a chat and owner treats everyone like family. The restaurant itself is in a nicely decorated house. Love the ambience and the experience. Worth a visit.
Carolyn.anne.penny
Seriously amazing curries! Best is SA. We had the Sri Lanka chicken curry which I have never tried before. I would not get a curry from anywhere else now, definitely looking forward to going back! Her cakes also look amazing.
Lesley Donna Williams
Yudhika is a fantastic host. I love the home environment that she creates along with her super friendly team. I've never known what burfee cake tastes like until I came across her delights; now hooked! Also, the most succulent crab curry I've had in my life. Yep; I'll be taking all my special friends over when they prove they deserve it :)
Sheryl
My rating is based only on my customer experience which was horrid to say the least. I arrived at 14h00 for a late lunch and after waiting a for a very long time without being attended to, I went in search of someone to assist. I was shown to my table without as much as a word let alone a greeting. I was grudgingly given a menu and then after ordering a starter was told that no more orders would be taken. I paid and left without eating. There is a minimum etiquette required by owners of restaurants towards their customers irrespective of awesome their cooking abilities supposedly are.  A dining experience is far more than just the food. I refuse to eat when I'm treated badly!!! Fortunately no shortage of good establishments around.
Npikie
Just got in and out in a second. Turned back because they have a private function before their advertised closing time! Yikes, just how we were told as well really sucks :(<br/>
Sathia Govender
Ridiculously overpriced...R180 for apparently what was 750g of mutton curry & roti which was supposed to cater for 3 people but only catered for 1 person as a take away. The food wasn't great at all...won't be visiting ever again!
Foodifancipants
The Queen of Curries lives in this kitchen! Superb products treated with the highest skill offers an outstanding meal.<br/><br/>Their reasonable prices and cheerful disposition will keep us coming back.
Tania Samantha Reddy
Not impressed. The samoosas as a starter were acceptable. The main - lamb rogan josh and prawn masala were utterly disappointing ! Both dishes lack flavour; the lamb was marbled with fat and lacked core ingredients i.e ginger and garlic. Bhurfee was powdery! ..The rustic atmosphere was cool but that's where it ends. The ladies room needs attention, as does the washbasin. And can we have something other than a roll of toilet paper to wipe off our hands with.
Qondiso
Chilled place, with a nice well maintained garden and friendly stuff. I stopped there for lunch, though I was kinda surprised by this hidden wonderful treasure of a restaurant. The food to me was different, but very delicious and incredibly yummy.<br/>This insanely awesome restaurant is good for all ages, and well, before I forget, once you realise that there is such an incredible restaurant in that area, you'll just go, "Hoooli Cow". :)
Daryl Chirnside
We went for lunch on a week day, the owner arranged for us to be shown around, saw the cooking school, and met Mom, who does the cooking, very traditional Indian cooking, done the authentic way. No commercial stuff here. Owner deliberately focuses on cooking school and coffee shop with lunches, and the occasional function. The lunches are limited options, you choose from a small selection of what Mom has cooked. We had the special lamb, and the chicken. Both really well cooked, and in an authentic tasty sauce, spicy but not overly hot!. Unfortunately the accompanying Basmati rice, despite being charged for separately, and heavily, was dry and appeared to have been waiting around for a meal to be served...The starter Samoosas were very disappointing, we think that they were made by the (novice!!) cooking students, as the pastry was overly thick, heavy and not-nice! The chicken filling was average. The ambience was charming, unusual and delightful. We really wanted to taste the food, as the whole idea seemed like a ''winning recipe', and new novel idea. So to conclude,  the mains were good, except for the rice - but NO Naan bread available - really a pity!! The starter  samoosas are to be avoided! The owner was a inspiration to chat to, local TV stations are filming the cooking school here at the premises in the lovely gardens opposite Fourways High School

It's almost sacrilegious for an Indian to go out to an Indian restaurant ... Right? (Well I think so) but let me tell you...this place is awesome. The food is on point and simply divine. That sounds a bit cliche, but no other words can be as descriptive. They have (wait for it).....Burfee cake. The thought alone of the "existence" of a Burfee cake is by itself awe inspiring. For those that don't know "burfee" is an Indian version of a Petit Four (or at least something akin to a Petit Four) made of milk powder, cream, sugar and flavoured with almond and cardamom. It tastes almost like a milky almondy flavoured fudge! #sheerdecadence. <br/>
