Review Medeo Restaurant - Fourways

Vanessa Moodley
Had a lovely dinner date on my birthday. Ambience was perfect - lovely romantic setting, table was well selected, private with a view. Food was delicious albeit a bit expensive. One would go to this restaurant on a special occasion and not necessarily on a normal night out unless willing to fork out double the price they’d pay at a decent Mediterranean restaurant. Arrangements can be made for special occasions at a cost. It’s all about the experience though and the team takes pride in making it one of the best. Our waiter was lovely and well versed on the menu and the specials. The manager popped by to check that we were enjoying the evening. In general, it was a pleasant evening. The venue is also a wonderful place to take couple pics afterward.

The high tea was lovely. Would definitely visit again.

Absolutely loved this restaurant. It made me feel like I was a heiress visiting South Africa. Definitely try the high tea, it's worth it.

An absolute dream to experience. Everything from the ambience, the decor, the staff and of course the food was excellent. Lovely indoor and outdoor seating. I give the Medeo 10 out of 5 stars 👌

Opulent “ High Tea “ with style and steeped in old British tradition. Time for the family and friends to celebrate our mothers 80th birthday.

I was invited to try out some of the new menu items at Medeo Restaurant @ The Palazzo, Montecasino along with a few other special people who i get to call friends. Prosecco on arrival and some delicious breads to get the evening going, so glad we came hungry 😋. Executive Chef Gareth Jordaan took us through the menu and his thought process when developing these dishes. Starters: "Salmon Ceviche" Ginger infused Salmon, Citrus Supréme, Liquor compressed Watermelon, toasted Ciabatta and Avocado. This was paired with the Altydgedacht Estate Sauvignon Blanc. Personally the fruit over powered the Salmon, and the wine paired well with the starter. Mains: "Lamb Noisette" Grilled Artichoke, Shiitake Mushrooms, Mint Pea Mousse and Seared baby leaks. Mains were served with the Guardian Peak Merlot, which i am not a fan of. The Lamb was a bit tough to cut although i enjoyed the taste and also found the Mint a bit too strong in flavour in the Mousse. Dessert: "Crème Brulée" Lavender Honeycomb, Shortbread Nuggets. Chef definitely outdid himself on this dish. It was absolutely faultless. Beautifully plated, tasty and satisfied all the senses. Thank you to As Seen By Lloyd and the Montecasino team for a fantastic evening and great service. Always superb spending time with amazing people. #TheFoodMusketeer #TheFoodMusketeerEats #TheFoodMusketeerDrinks #GottaluvMonte #PalazzoMonte #TsogoWine #TFMMedeo

Stunning Hotel in the heart of Fourways. We enjoyed a romantic birthday dinner at the Medeo and some drinks at the bar near the foyer while the piano was being played. Our Table was decorated beautifully with rose petals and the staff were very friendly. The food was amazing but don't expect large portions - food is cuisine. They surprised us with a beautiful birthday cake after dinner which we enjoyed in the lounge Upstairs. It is on the expensive side but we had a wonderful experience that I can recommend for a fine dining experience.

Had a very pleasant dinner. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. Had lamb shank which was cooked to perfection. Beautiful setting with a lovely view. Really had a great evening. Would definitely go back again.

The place swept me of my foot as soon as I entered it. To this the food was so good that I absolutely fell in love with this place.. recommended 100%

We did a breakfast buffet at the Medeo Palazzo restaurant. The food was good. The service was excellent. Good spread. Salmon was fresh. Overall ambience was nice.

Great cocktails but the stuff forgets about the customers

Really friendly staff, the pasta Nero was fantastic, and oysters incredibly fresh. The pollo parpadelle was on the salty side but the pasta itself was cooked to perfection.

A very stylish restaurant. It is has a sense of calmness to it. Beautiful decor as-well. I recommend this for anyone looking for a stylish, over the top experience. Both outdoor and indoor seating are great, if you are in the mood for a more fine dinning experience I recommend sitting inside.
I recommend the mojito, very delicious. Can’t wait to return

A little revamp has happened and the menu has also been updated. I've been here a number of times most recently August 2018 and was disappointed in their high tea and wouldn't recommend it at that point. However being here today, watching the management and staff being fully attentive and friendly, it seems things have changed.

Today, on a sunny Sunday we opted to sit on thr outsidr terrace overlooking the gardens and koi pond, beautiful setting.

The lunch menu differs from dinner but I was happily accommodated with the seafood risotto off the dinner menu. We started with some cocktails then moved on to wine. They have an excellent selection of wines and a number of by the glass options too. We shared the crispy calamari as a starter which was absolutely delicious served with goats cheese, olives, aioli and slightly blistered tomotoes. Mains I had the seafood risotto, which was loaded with shrimps, calamari topped with some mussels, crispy calamari and a queen prawn. It was a tomoto based risotto that hit all the right flavours. The kingklip fish and chips was average in comparison. Service was excellent. A nice way to spend a chilled lazy sunday afternoon.

I was particularly impressed that they would make almond milk cappuccinos as part of the high tea.
Each of the little treats to eat was beautifully decorated and tasty. Definitely not a generic “cucumber sandwich”.
Highly recommend high tea here.

Soothing ambience, not over crowded, amazing setting. Every thing about the food was droolworthy. The staff are very polite, warm and friendly. Wonderful experience!

We booked a large table here for my Father’s birthday and it was a fantastic evening with amazing service. Our waitress was so talented at remembering all of our orders and topping up our drinks all night. She was always around if we needed anything. It was tip-top service! There were too many of us for me to review all of the meals so I will only be reviewing two pescatarian meals. For starters I had the seared tuna and my sister ordered the salmon Ceviche, both were plated beautifully and had loads of flavour! Mains we both ordered the risotto, one Beetroot and Goats cheese and the other seafood. So delicious but the portion sizes were a bit large after starter. Not saying we didn’t end up finishing them the next day. Overall it was an incredible meal! Highly recommend booking here for a special occasion.

Was invited for a birthday celebration, high tea style .

We sat outside, we loved the ambience and service was great .

The dainties were fresh and refreshing, a big variety of the sweet goodies, only thing that was a bit dry was the baguette with cold meat , guessing it was in the oven for too long but it had a lot of flavour .

All in all , I was super impressed.

We went for the high tea at the Palazzo today which is R260 per head. You get served a sweet and savoury platter. The eats were very tasty, probably the best pastries we’ve had at a high tea. However the service is less than desirable. Very long wait for coffee and tea. Drinks were forgotten and table rarely cleaned. No menu (I screenshot the menu from their website so we knew what was on offer). This is unfortunate but at an establishment like this you’d expect more. Perhaps more of a staff training problem. No manager to check on tables or service. Nice selection but very mediocre overall experience.

Dessert- Out of this world
Location- Beautiful
Service- Great
My overall experience was pleasant, would definitely opt for a meal next time!

Lavish day out with the girls at The Palazzo. Indulged in the new winter High Tea menu which did not disappoint. The manager was so on point with checking in, making sure we were taken care of. Everything was well explained to us and then the eating began! Delicate portions of well made sweet and savory delights came on 2 trays, 1 sweet and 1 savory tray. Overall it was wonderful. I was not a fan of the Moroccan pie or the quiche as it got cold quick, but every piece apart was stunning. The drinks in the high tea are a wide range of teas, coffies and hot chocolate. Much enjoyed by all at our table and definitely calls for another round back. The price is still 1 of the most affordable available and u also get beautiful pictures from the picturesque setting of the Palazzo gardens and pool.

We had a high tea at Medeo today and it exceeded our expectations! Every bite was delish! Worth every cent! Beautiful restaurant and friendly staff.

I will never forget this place, Had my girlfriend's birthday here, and that night she didnt just walkout one year old but she also walked out as a fiance. The staff was so beautiful they set up the table with roses and all these beautiful deco in our table. I popped the question at the beautiful garden outside her reaction was priceless. Happiest day of my life. Staff Perfect, Food Perfect, Look and Feel Beyond perfect. We will never forget this place. Thank you Medeo restuarant and staff.

We went to Medeo, at the Palazzo hotel for Valentine’s Day. The setting was absolutely gobsmackingly beautiful. However it’s downhill from there. Their set menu for the day was disappointingly devoid of any flavor. It felt as if the meals were prepared in bulk and just dished out clumsily Not worth the R1300 bill.
Shanice Gounden
The food at Medeo was good, but the highlight was definitely the dessert. It's amazing! It's the perfect spot for a quiet date or drinks outdoors with a beautiful view. The staff are some of the best I've come across, they made the experience amazing. We went for dinner just before the ballet at Monte and they stuck to our schedule and even provided a golf cart to get to the theatre. The experience is worth it

From the welcome to the serving, you feel at home with all the smiles and fantastic service. The parma ham starter was fresh and light. The duck main is probably the best I have ever had. The grilled salmon was great. Overall a good night out and I can highly recommend this restaurant.

this was definitely a great restaurant without a doubt. the food was amazing we had the oxtail and the lamb shank it was definitely a great experience and I wouldn't mind going there again. the waitress was very attentive to all our needs.

Made a reservation a day before which was confirmed and we got there to no reservation made for us!!! The menu was not the menu advertised here and the staff and service was damn incompetent!!! Never again!! Waste of my damn time!!! NEVER AGAIN!!

Came here for a tea party! What a perfect venue, you'd never say that you're in montecasino, I loved the special attention that waiters gave to us and the ambiance was great! A lovely place for Sunday lunch with the family

One of the best parts of my stay at The Palazzo Hotel was breakfast at the Medeo restaurant . From the service to the food, everything was superb !
The staff at the Medeo are absolutely wonderful -.they cater for your every need with such grace and are all pleasant .
The food was amazing !!! The spread every morning was unbelievable 😍. I was absolutely in my element .

I would definitely drive to the Palazzo just to have breakfast there

Been here for a high tea party last month. Service was very good and the place is beautiful! Presentation of the cakes picture perfect. The only downfall is that the taste of the cakes could be improved. However a lovely experience. Will be back to try the breakfast.

Beautiful place, but was very much average my lamb buger pattie was not cook well. (raw) Server kept disappearing. Keys to the celler were no where to be found had to wait 30+ minutes for a drink.
John O'Brien
Beautiful place and John our waiter was great but the lack of service due to no management interaction and clearly understaffed kitchen was terrible and the food very average. It took atleast 10 minutes between orders. The milkshakes and Don Pedro's were inedible and we sent them back.
Melanie Meyers
Stunning breakfast buffet ....meat and cheese selection divine with homemade preserves. Freshly baked breads ....loved the pretzel sticks. Hot breakfast prepared perfectly and incredibly friendly staff and manager. Will definitely stop by again!
Charmaine
Beautiful restaurant and lovely ambience, sadly the food and the service lets them down. We had the lamb shank and pork belly for mains, food was very average. Our waiter was rather inattentive and kept disappearing.
Shamira
Booked a table for a baby shower...beautiful venue..bad services and a limited menu..the high tea spread wasn't to my taste so I opted for a salad and substituted the cheese with avocado, it was delicious. Although we paid for 7 people we only got served food for 6, we had to ask for an extra portion, they had no hot beverage menu and the waitress didn't seem to know what they could offer, she went back and forth about three times. I would suggest a hot beverage menu to avoid this, the waitress didn't communitcate that the teapots where ready, we waited for a long time before we noticed them. The spread, warmth and service at La Patisserie is so much better, the owners are amazing. I wouldn't recommend the Palazzo high tea, I wasn't impressed.
Stelios Chasou
The atmosphere and ambience was the best thing about this place. The service seemed very slow on a Wednesday night. I had the sole and it was rather disappointing. The rest of the table had pasta which looked quite good.
Deeregie
The food, the service, the ambience awesome! Gets me every time. I especially love how perfect the desserts turn out every time, great place.

Celebrated my birthday with baby sis and my friend this morning at The Medeo, had Champaign breaky😋😜🍽 it was awesome 😍😍
The waiters and managers on duty really made my day they were awesome and the selection of the food from the buffet was also fresh and tasty , beautifully decorated table for the treat with some rose petals 🍾💝💝
For the hot breaky we ordered : Eggs Benedict, Omelette and Egg Salmon scramble , all the dishes were on point 👌🏻👌🏻
Thank you to the team before the lovely cake as well it was indeed a lovely morning 🍾🍰💃🏽

Loved the view, overlooking the garden.
Good service, I need to try more on this menu.
Beautifully served Solomon.
Highly recommended.
I will return for a fact, as I know the wife loved it.

Set in the Palazzo hotel at Monte Casino, this place oozes opulence. The decor is exquisite, and the lavish surroundings offers a hint of old-world charm. We arrived without a booking, however although all tables were reserved, the kind hostess offered to personally clear a recently-departed table for us. We headed upstairs to the bar for some drinks while our table was being readied. The bar was busy (private function) however we were promptly served and took a table nearby. The bar stocked some significant whiskies to our surprise, and the host was very accommodating. We headed back down for dinner, and were greeted by a very well trained and hospitable waiter. The evening was great, and the food exceeded expectations. The restaurant also boasts beautiful terraces, which we would love to experience on a follow-up visit for a Sunday lunch or high tea - looking forward!

I was lucky enough to be invited to a birthday dinner at The Medeo Restaurant recently and wow, what an amazing experience it was! On arrival, we were welcomed by our waiter Themba who was fantastic and made our evening that much more pleasant. The table setting was exquisite as was the restaurant and the stunning gardens outside. We were the first people to arrive and Themba ensured that we were well taken care of by offering us drinks and serving us complimentary breads.

While waiting, I had a look at the menu and had my heart set on the mixed forest mushroom risotto which is what I ended up ordering. I had never had a risotto before but from watching many Masterchef episodes, I know it's the death dish and very easy to mess up. The risotto was well cooked, beautifully seasoned and really delicious. I also had a taste of my sister's prawn and pumpkin ravioli which was equally delicious and had a great combination of flavours. Themba was kind enough to warn us that there was another large group of people who were going to be placing their orders and tried to get our order in first. The food arrived quite quickly considering that we were also quite a large group of people. A lovely touch at the end of the main course was when Themba brought in the chef who introduced himself as Collen and asked if we had enjoyed the food that he had prepared.

For dessert, we shared the chocolate brownie with ice cream, meringue, pecan nut praline and a crumb. This dessert was just divine and left me wanting more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dining experience - the service was impeccable, the food was delicious and ambience was warm and inviting. I would definitely like to go back!

May is a month of celebration for us, and this particular occasion was our friend’s birthdays. Medeo was their restaurant of choice. The restaurant set up a fantastically laid out table which was semi-private. The menu had a wide range of menu items to satisfy all dietary requirements. My eyes were automatically drawn towards the lamb dishes, and specifically the lamb burger. My wife ordered the prawn and pumpkin ravioli and my sister in-law had the mushroom risotto.

The lamb burger was perfectly cooked as requested (medium) and was served with a tomato relish, pickles, topped with swiss cheese, and sides of both chips and salad. The burger is actually the best I’ve eaten to date. The prawn and pumpkin ravioli was fantastic, and the mushroom risotto was well cooked and delicious. Dessert was a no-brainer and we ordered the Chocolate Brownies served with home made espresso ice cream and a pecan-nut praline, and was absolutely delicious!

A special thanks must go to our waiter, Themba, who made the experience all that more special, as well as the Chef, Collin, who came out to check that we were enjoying the dishes he had prepared.

We were invited to a birthday dinner for our friends who are twins and we were the first to get to The Medeo. I have been to Monte Casino many times but never to The Palazzo Hotel. I must say, it's a stunning hotel. The table setting was beautiful and we had time to look at the beautifully manicured gardens and fountains. Our waiter Themba was an absolute delight. He was so polite and attentive, bringing us bread while we waited for the other people to arrive. The menu was simple yet comprehensive. We waited a while for all the guests to arrive so we ordered quite late. Themba was kind enough to tell us to order to get our food quickly as there was another big table that was about to order. I ordered the Prawn and Pumpkin Ravioli. The food arrived quickly. I can't begin to describe how delicious it was. The Ravioli was cooked perfectly and the flavours of Prawn and Pumpkin blended so well. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal. I would love to visit again to try the other dishes. Themba even brought the chef, Collin to our table to ask us if the food was good. 3 of us decided to share a dessert. I ordered the Chocolate Brownie with toffee caramel and ice-cream and it was mouth watering. All in all a fantastic evening with amazing service and delicious food.

What an outstanding venue! I had a work breakfast here and I was absolutely impressed - the service was great, the venue is stunning and the food was delicious. We had the buffet breakfast, the muffins and crossoints were fresh and tasty. There was a lovely selection of cheeses, breads, cold meats, fruit - what a treat!

Went for a breakfast this morning at the Medeo and it was excellent. Great staff and service accompanied by a very nice breakfast buffet. Served both hot and cold breakfast with a variety of pastries as well. Worth the time and the money for a great start to the morning.

I'm coming from Australia to South Africa for business trip. I have been eating food in casino for the whole week and so tired for those food in there. Then I was attracted by the photos in Zomato for this restaurant. It is inside the PALAZZO HOTEL, an 5 star hotel in this Complex. We had a bottle of red for R230, much much cheaper then Australia, and the wine was nice. I enjoyed it!! Lobster bisque was my starter, I assume there would be good sea food in an 5 star hotel.... But it was very fishy..... Although, I had a few bad experience in South Africa for seafood, I still want to give it a try.. But after this time, I totally give up trying any seafood in here. I order an confit duck for my main, it was quite good I like the texture, But not salty enough. And also the dessert was good too. Overall, I very vey enjoyed this night, dinning in front of the garden was very very relaxing!!!
Amanda
The Signature dish event was amazing, the complimentary relationship between the food and wine DIVINE! The coffee was smooth and mouth watering.
Thank you to the Palazzo Hotel Chefs Gareth,Gerard and Beverley, as well as Miguel Chan our great Sommelier.
Bon Appétit Annie Hodes Justin Griesel

Love love love coming to this beautiful hotel, one feels like they have stepped into a palace in Tuscant. Chef Gérard is accommodating and talented and I find myself here more often than not because of it for work functions and meetings. The Scottish salmon is beyond delish!

I met the girls at The Palazzo for afternoon tea and the classic elegant surroundings welcomed us in all the style the Palazzo is known for. The staff are very friendly and helpful and made us feel right at home.

A gorgeous jug of water arrived at the table followed shortly by cappuccinos and tea. But the main event took our breath away. Two three-tiered stands arrived heavily laden with amazing treats!

In particular the Lemon Meringue and Opera cake was the tastiest while my friends said the meatpies were really nice.

All in all the food was way too much for us to finish despite our best efforts! A perfect way to pass an afternoon with good company in a wonderful location.

We requested an outside table that we were unaware was the smelly smoking section - we were re-seated in the outdoor deck which was not as lovely as the smoking area (which had a stunning view of the gardens) so I wasn't that impressed. However, it was definitely quieter.
My sis in law and I shared a lovely bottle of red wine and the gents both had beers. We skipped starters and went straight to mains - food was good in general. My duck confit leg was divine and the mash was incredible, however my duck breast was rubbery. The pork belly main was ok (fat was not rendered down properly and the skin was not very crispy); the chicken sous vide was good and the prawn & pumpkin ravioli had hardly any prawns.
The March menu had a chocolate board which was listed to share and we should have listened! It was very rich with some good elements and some average. The berry dessert was divine and the berry macaroon was amazing.
Decent experience.
Marie
A decent place for a romantic date, absolutely beautiful and elegantly classy.

The service is slow and unwelcoming. We were sent from pillar to post to be seated. We first seated ourselves at the outside, we were told there was no space (although there clearly was at we had already been sitting there). I followed the host inside to which she stated that since there was no seats inside we should wait by the bar until a table opens up.

This was unacceptable as we were hosting guests. We insisted on keeping our current seats and were then served as per normal. There was definitely no reason for the run around.

We proceeded to sit inside when a table was open and had a lovely meal.

The menu is consize and classic with nothing out of the ordinary. They also have a great wine selection.

Breakfast in the mornings are exceptional. Mostly due to the fact that there is no service. There is a vast food selection that I would definitely go back for.
Jo
Had a very good experience here - solid menu, nice selection and a good wine list. Staff were attentive and the restaurant had a nice setting and mood. Would go back.

Tried to book for a 60th birthday celebration. First time at 14h50 i was told the lady who does the bookings was unavaikable, and to call back the next morning. Trued three times the next morning, but the phone was unanswered on 2 occasions and was cut off on the third. So much for 'luxury dining' - I won't be trying again.
Anandie
Sadly I was not made feel very welcome when I arrived asking for a table outside on the patio. The hostess even asked me why I am here because they are setting up for dinner (which only starts at 18:00). I felt guilty for asking to be served and guilty for asking for a menu. Is this how patrons are treated?
Lucky my waiter had slightly better manners, proceeding to at least bring my drink and Palazzo salad promptly.
Caroline
Lunch menu was barely comparable to the dinner menu, however the service and atmosphere was lovely. The tiny portions were very overpriced.
Samantha Katzen
It was my first time at this restaurant, I was very excited to try it out. We had a table outside which really was beautiful :) It was a 30th birthday and we were told on the phone that he would receive a glass of bubbly and a slice of cake, the bubbly never arrived and we had to go inside and ask for the cake.

The service was extremely slow. We must have waited 25 minutes for drinks and 40 mins for starters.

The food was pretty terrible, I got the lobster bisque, which to be honest tasted like canned soup with a slight burnt taste, 2 other people also ordered it and couldn't finish it. The sweet corn soup wasn't bad and the steak tartare was good but portion was tiny.

Then to the main courses, we had the chicken which was dry and tasteless, 2 of us got the salmon which was in an oily watery liquid, the burger wasn't bad and the fries were the only good thing I ate that night.

Needless to say we didn't stay for dessert.

It was my worst restaurant experience of the year.
Yasmin
If you're looking for very fine dining for a romantic date then I'd definitely suggest this restaurant. It is very classy and has really great food to go with it.
Natalie Lazaris
Beautiful settings in the middle of Fourways. Sitting at this hotel, you really could be anywhere in the world. A buffet lunch on a Sunday allows you to enjoy the heat of summer, sitting in exquisite gardens and having an array of meats, salads and devine desert. Wonderful for those early lunches that last hours, siping on a crisp chardonnay and enjoying the beauty of montecasino. Service is great too!!
Rose Marie Pereira
Went there for an anniversary, be prepared to pay! Food was visually very pretty but lacked flavour was expecting more! The restaurant itself is very beautiful and you feel like you in an Italian palace.
Georgette Brook
My first time having dinner at The Medeo and the food is out of this world!! It's a stunning place to have a romantic dinner and the dessert is even better! It's definitely a place to visit of you looking for excellent quality food.
Sachin Ram-Asary
Quality of the food was excellent and so was the ambience. Staff couldn't find our reservation and the waiter was incompetent (argued about sides, mixed up order, didn't confirm anything, poked around the table at inopportune times, brought cold food and breakfast menus instead of dessert menus). I'd rather go elsewhere for 'fine-dining' thanks. The service was atrocious even if the rest was good.

This place exudes sophistication. The Medeo Restaurant is situated at The Palazzo Hotel and just as magnificent as the hotel, so to is the restaurant. The restaurant overlooks the hotel's exquisite garden. Even though I was not a hotel guest, I could not resist the urge to walk around the whimsical garden. You hear the cascading water from the fountain which sits directly opposite a sparkling blue pool. Nonetheless, due to the beauty and tranquility of the hotel and its garden alone, I was mesmerized. The Medeo offers you the option to dine inside or outside on a deck which has spectacular views of the garden.

As I went there for a special occasion, I received complimentary champagne. Their staff is naturally very formal, but still greet their guests with a warm and welcoming smile. The food is served gourmet style in terms of its portions and presentation. Their wine list will satisfy any avid wine drinker. If you are looking for elegance and fine dining, this is the place to go!
Rod Walker
Lovely setting outside. Disappointing Osso Buco. Meat needed longer and sauce was bland so not the rich falling off the bone expected. Gremolata forgotten and had to be asked for. Good waiters and helpful and efficient young manageress. Maybe tired Sunday evening staff in kitchen.
Andrea L
Absolutely loved this place. Beautiful setting, amazing food and fantastic service.

I had the chicken and my boyfriend had the steak. Both were so beautifully presented and were cooked to tender perfection. Their desserts were also to die for!

Our waitress was so efficient and friendly. I was very impressed!

I'll definitely be back!
Bryan Cassel
Unfortunately the food didn't live up to the hype. The fish was slimy. Having said that everyone at the restaurant did everything they could to fix the issue. Including taking it off the menu. Can't really ask for more than that.
Nondumiso Khumalo
I really enjoyed my birthday dinner with my friends at the Medeo Resturant. The food was delicious and well presented. Gift Ngwenya our waiter was amazing; always around and willing to assist. I am definitely going back.

We also had the pleasure of sitting next to the Springboks after their game, as they were also having dinner at the Medeo.
Bronwyn Esterhuizen
I have yet to eat a meal at the Medeo, however, I have been there on a number of occasions for drinks and once for high tea - the latter upon which this review is generally based. Our high tea experience was simply lovely. We were served generous platters of bite sized treats to suit every sweet and savoury craving. The high tea was well priced and the service was competent.

My children spoilt me with the most wonderful dinner birthday surprise. The setting is stunning - words cannot aptly describe how beautiful it is. Our waiter was excellent, attentive and made us feel most welcome. The food was superb and the restaurant surprised me with a delicious happy birthday cake. I would love to come again.

This incredible hotel restaurant has it all - ultra-attentive staff to the most delicious food platted to an art. This is truly a very intimate and special restaurant - perfect for a romantic dinner. KevFabFood can highly recommend the chicken liver starter and sea-bass main. Give you and your loved one a treat and enjoy a special dinner at this incredible restaurant today!

The Medeo Restaurant at the Palazzo Hotel is one of those places that has been on my 'Try before I die' bucket list for a while now and last night I am excited to say was the night that my dreams came true - I was invited for a Wine Pairing evening here. As I walked in, it was hard not to notice the impressively high ceilings with gorgeous chandeliers and fresh orchids everywhere.. and as I descended the stairs to see the view of a terrace overlooking these Tuscan-inspired gardens, I almost felt as if I was in Italy itself.

Classy, elegant, luxurious and everything that I think fine dining should encompass! Now onto the service: Sommelier, Miguel Chan ushered us through the evening with a gracious smile and a hint of a french accent that he carries so well in this five star establishment.

Gerard Vingerling, the Executive Chef even came out for a brief meet & greet to explain his inspiration behind the dishes that he would be serving and pairing over the course of the evening. I really was impressed with his signature style, special touches, professionalism and felt like we would all be in good hands for the evening whilst we were tutored during our Chardonnay wine pairing evening ahead. And on this particular evening, the showcased Estate was De Wetshof whose chardonnays did not disappoint!

And so we began our evening with some of the history behind the De Wet family by none other than third generation family member, Johann De Wet (in charge of viticulture and marketing for De Wetshof), who had specifically made the trip up to Johannesburg for this pairing evening with his soil samples for all of us in tow. I was first suprised and then proud of the history behind De Wetshof, and how the family risked going to jail for its part in introducing this grape to the country of South Africa. An endeavor which
changed the face of South African wine history!

Onto the food & lovely wines: Our 'welcome' drink was the Limelight and it eased us into the evening.

1. Roasted carrots, cumin and orange chevin, taragon pickled carrot.. paired with De Wetshof Estate Limestone Hill Chardonnay 2014.

2. Little neck clam chowder, Irish scallop, potato hash paired with the Finesse Chardonnay 2014. This chowder was my favourite course for the evening - creamy yet not overpowering like some clam chowders can be and so many different flavours that I cleared my plate in no time on this course.

3. Pork belly with potato vetkoek, shimeji mushrooms, lentils.. paired with the 2009 & 2012 Bateleur Chardonnay*. I have to pause her to point out that I actually loved that the saying "age like a fine wine" rings true and it applies here - the older the wine, the more complex the tastes.

4. Taleggio cheese, watermelon preserve on ciabatta paired with the Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2014. 5. Avocado cheesecake (yes you heard me), chocolate fudge, burnt orange and white chocolate ganache paired with a tantalizing glass of the De Wetsof MCC Brut 2008 to finish off one of the most interesting and informative wine-pairings that I have ever attended!

*Recommendation: Find out about these wonderful monthly pairings and book yourself one! Perfect for a friends night out or a romantic date night!

Not a bad spot for lunch. Service can be a bit slow but it is friendly enough. Good menu selection and a very pleasant experience. Definitely could be better though.

This place got one star because I didn't have the option of rating it zero. Went there for lunch today and was left alone for an hour because my waitress went for lunch. A first time experience for me. Between the non existent services and the constant little flies all over the table, I'm pretty sick to my stomach.

Would strongly suggest you save your money for a proper fine dining experience!!!

An absolutely pleasant experience. I'm pretty sure that the prettiness and picturesque -ness of the place actually amplifies the taste of the food... But all in all- I enjoyed both the place and the food... We had opted to have breakfast at this elegant establishment and it was quite nice. We opted for the buffet category and the spread available was worth the cost. My favourite : Eggs Benefict with salmon, which I had followed with the Camembert Cheese roped with honey glazed macadamia nuts and other assorted nuts drizzled with cranberry syrup. Delish!!! I could have eaten the whole wheel! definitely on my list of "places to frequent"!... Nice!
Went for Sunday breakfast, elegant venue, outdoor table, sunny day. Great food both a la carte and buffet. Champaign flowed freely. Friendly, polite yet incompetent service staff. No supervision to guide them. Not good enough for a five star hotel.

Lunch and dinner at the Medeo Restaurant was a real treat! The service is very good and the decor is stunning. The smoked salmon is a must. They also have very nice cocktails. Good idea to try out this restaurant before watching a show at Monte casino.

A comfortable and pretty venue. Our food was good, but didn't blow us away (Thundergun has better steaks for half the price) and small annoyances took a star away from my review. Eg the waitress, while sweet and friendly, forgot to bring me water twice, and forgot to bring my man a beer. There were also quite a few flies buzzing around though we were inside, not too classy!

Oh my! I love this place! Beautiful elegant outside area and you have never eaten breakfast, up until you've had breakfast here! It's not really buffet, it's heaven, from green figs to sushi & champagne for breakfast! I will do breakfast here every week-end if it was possible!

Had a business breakfast this morning at the Medeo.

It had a nice spread of pastries and bakery items, cold cuts, hot breakfast buffet, selection of fruits and juices.

It also had a nice sparkling wine offering which I had with Orange Juice to make a Mimosa :)

I ordered the Eggs Benedict with salmon which was nicely done. My friend had the open omelette with toppings on a foccacia bread.

Generally a pleasant experience sitting on the outside area.

The downs to the experience was the birds that flutter around the area and the cappuccino is not in my opinion the best quality coffee.
