Review Shamiyana - Edenvale

_______
The best place for Indian food! Don’t let the appearance of the shop turn you away. The quality has always been consistent and the portions and prices are definitely worth it. The food is always fresh and super tasty! I will always be a loyal customer to this store, and definitely understand how they’ve been around for years. Awesome food.

I felt like a good curry and I know of Shamiyana cos of Hodads next door. I ordered the chicken korma mild and my partner had lamb korma mild. Both were delicious and very good value for money. Next time I'll go for the medium though.

I did take out but it's the best North Indian in edenvale and surroundings.

I have been going to Shamiyana since 2012 and I have loved every dish over the years. (I have tried pretty much every dish on the menu) It has been a regular take away and eat-in for myself and my family and we will continue to support this lovely little restaurant. The curries are so full of flavour and always made perfectly. The samosas are incredible and I absolutely love the green chutney! The staff have always been friendly and happy to chat while you wait. Thank you Shamiyana 🙏🏼

My partner introduced me to this place a few years ago and since then, I never buy my Indian food anywhere else, but at Shimayana. They not a fancy restaurant, but the service is excellent and their food is out of this world. They cook with love. If you happen to be around Edenvale you must try them out. I Lovd them🥰

This is my favourite North Indian takeaway! Generous portions, authentic flavours, and great value for money. As a vegetarian, I'm impressed with their variety of dishes which I find lacking in other local takeaways. I highly rate their paneer masala.

Masala Tea was Delicious.

Disgusting!! Found a fly in my boyfriend curry. Called the restaurant and the “manager” was the worst. Not a care in the world and refused to even spell his name for me. Waste of our money and a health hazard

Took a gamble when driving past and ordered the Lamb Biryani. It was very spicy but quite delicious. I’ll definitely be back, but will order mild next time. 😉

Food is amazing, but most times it is a little of a wait. It’s no McDondalds drive through. However it’s quite quality Indian food. The prices are a little higher than other similar Indian restaurants in Gauteng but if you in the area it’s convenient. Based in Edenvale town so not the best areas but convenient.

Ordered chicken briyani via Uber Eats Promo Buy 1 Get One Free. Was supposed to receive 2 chicken briyanis due to promo.Only received 1. Called and the guy who answered the phone was not helpful at all.He couldn't tell me why I had received only 1?Asked for the manager's number and the guy says he is in India. So who is running it?Ridiculous!!The CHICKEN briyani had a very pungent mutton taste to it which is because they obviously used the mutton gravy to make the briyani.Chicken was just boiled-tasteless and not flavourful. No lentils.Wont be ordering from there again. Not my first bad experience. Was hoping their standard had picked up.
Silumko Ramalata
Ordered a Bombay Potato, was terrible, potatoes where cold and the sauce was mild warm. the roti was more like a slice of thick bread. Also asked for hot but was given mild.

Very disappointed in how this restaurant handle such a small issue. We order Uber eats and stated “No Carrots” on the kitchen notes. Made the next note on the next page Please rice because I had a feeling they would forget. As Uber arrived no rice. They guy who answered had three different excuses and one actually blaming himself and responding with WHAT DO U WANT ME TO DO. It’s so sad to see how one person can can bring a name down. People shouldn’t be dealing with customers if they don’t know how to.

Tried Shamiyana for the first time tonight. I had butter chicken, which was really tasty! But the naan bread was really disappointing - was meant to be butter naan but was actually plain naan & it was not fully cooked, kinda like raw dough :( I would give them another try though, reasonably priced compared to others in the area.

Take away shop with a few sit down tables.
Not the biggest menu but a lot of the classics are there. Opted for a chicken bunny. Flavor was good . Asked for a mild next time I will order hot as this one didn't burn at all. Overall a decent bunny.

Got take aways. Got the lamb Rogan Josh and the Chicken Korma. Both mild on the spicy scale. That korma was proper Indian comfort food. It was so heavenly. The Rogan Josh was yum. However, for me to say it wasn't spicy enough says a lot cause I don't like food that's too hot. They could have pumped it up a lil more. Will order hot next time. The naan bread was incredible and it's huge. The pompadom was a waste though. Don't bother with that. I'm giving it a rating of 4 just because how good the korma and naan was.

My number one stop shop when in the area. I have a client about 5km away and every time I’m there I just have to stop at Shamiyana! Honestly such delicious curry! I do recommend the Lamb Rogan Josh! Or actually any curry on the menu! 👌🏻

Not too impressed with their lack of attention to detail. We wanted to try their food this evening however i don't think i will ever be going back there due to their lack of understanding... Our order was Prawn Vindaloo, and 2 Lamb briyani, however when we got back to the place to collect our meal they call out a chicken bunny or chicken dish and i got very angry with them and told them to sort it out at their own cost they had the cheek to ask us for an extra R20 to make up the difference for their mistake... We got our money back and walked away...

Never going to happen.... EVER!!!!

We ordered dinner and once we got home and unpacked our food the order was wrong. We ordered 1 chicken dish and 1 mutton. We got two mutton. I called to tell them they got the order wrong and the guy who answered said I should just eat the food and that its my own fault. This is such bad service. To top it off he put the phone down on me. We will never order there again. First time buy last time buyer !!!

Quite impressed however potato and paneer is not a combination that goes very well...overall the food was above average and flavour was not overpowering

Absolutely delicious chicken korma. I ordered delivery from them and the food portions were generous, delicious and hot. I will definitely be ordering from here again, I would recommend it highly to anyone in Edenvale.!

What to say.......This is that place you would not generally stop and buy something to eat, well we did,and what a pleasure it was. Indian takeaway at its best.We tried the Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken tikka Masala, Prawn Korma. You guys will see us again and again and again....

Really delicious curries especially the butter chicken. Unfortunately they're not always consistent though. Just a warning to always check what you are charged. We have found that they charge you more than what is stated on their menu. They increase prices for items (not annual increase) when they feel like it and add it to your bill. This has happened twice in the last few weeks. As regulars we were really disappointed to discover this.

Tried this place for the first time the other night and I was extremely impressed. Mutton rogan josh was fantastic. The potato fritter type things were also really good. Best curry i have had in Edenvale.

We have been a customer at Shamiyana for over 15 years. Last night we ordered take aways for our family and I was horrified at the poor quality of the food. The chicken had obviously been pre-boiled and then just dumped into whatever sauce was ordered. It was so hard that neither my son nor I could eat the meal. And nothing was prepared according to our heat preference. Very disappointed.

I am torn between giving this place a fantastic score as well as a very poor one. The food is excellent, well prepared, well packaged and available at fantastic prices. We were able to both eat and have left overs on a R150 budget. The service however was extremely disappointing, I would say that a government office is more interested to hear what you have to say than the person who took my order. When I had started giving my order over the phone, I was asked to hold while he proceeded to take two whole orders from people at the register. This I know because every time he said "helo, how can I help", he proceeded to talk to someone else and I was left talking into a phone with no one at the other end. When it was finally my turn, the first order I gave was repeated to me incorrectly, I corrected him but when I asked for the whole order to be repeated back to me at the end, I was told that he does not have the time and reassured me he has the correct order. When I went to pick up my food, two of my side orders were the incorrect size, there is only one size on the online menu but I recieved tiny portions, something that basic customer service and communication could have avoided. This place is not to fantastic on the eyes but for take-away's it is fine. Extreme potential here, I hope the owners can make the necessary improvements.

Shamiyana is a cheap Indian take-away spot conveniently located in Edenvale. It looks quite dodgy from the outside and probably isn't the greatest place to sit and eat.

The portions are decent and the meals are cheap, but not great. The curries don't have enough flavour or heat and aren't very well made. The butter chicken should have been creamier, but the chicken was cooked well. I ordered the chicken madras but got lamb instead, and I really wasn't impressed with it. The meat was chewy and didn't taste right, and overall the dishes were a bit bland.

So for the cold winter nights I usually love myself some curry, and I must say the food from here hits all the right notes. The prices are reasonable and the portions are big. Iv had almost everything on the menu and everything has been extremely flavorful and yummy. I love love love the aloo paratha and raita. This place is a must for Indian food. The restaurant isn't very clean but it will do.

You've got to look past the lack of decor, broken furniture and near empty fridge. Not somewhere you stay and eat. But the take-away a are amazing.

Shamiyana has been around since I was in my early teens (almost 20 years ago) and they have been a key player in the diverse Edenvale food scene. Sadly over the years the quality of the food has deteriorated. I'm not sure if their has been a change in ownership (or even multiple changes) but it definitely isn't the Shamiyana that I grew up with.

Friday lunches are reserved for Shamiyana's as her Mutton dishes will wash away all the week's stress. I usually go for the mild mutton dishes as it has a balanced kick with regards to the spice. The mutton tikka masala is my favourite. It's worth the try if you enjoy curry.

Having a penchant for Indian cuisine it has been an arduous task finding a good curry since moving to Joburg from Durban 7 years ago. At last we have found what we searching for and its relatively close to boot. It's a pity that it is not a restaurant and only a take out but that does not stop us grabbing some dinner from here every other week!

A Decent Indian Takeaway.

Shamiyara looked rather shabby from the outside like most of the Indian takeaways in Edenvale. Their dishes weren't as rich as the others I've tasted and a little too thin for my liking, but the flavours are definitely good. The butter naan I had were very flat and dense and definitely lack the traditional light fluffiness, so I'd recommend just have the dishes with the rice. The portions are adequate for a hungry person with a fair price for takeaways. You can choose between mild, medium or hot for the dishes and I think the spiciness is about the same as Nando's :)

Bottomline: A decent takeaway if you're suddenly craving for curry but aren't motivated enough for a drive.

Pros: fair price to quality and portion, good flavours
Cons: flat naan

Excellent! Best curry ever! Highly recommended! The garlic naan is highly recommended too. We choose plain but there are different options to choose from. Excellent for take away. Restaurant not fancy but trust me you wont be disappointed with the food. We are regular patrons for years now. Never been disappointed.

Not the best decor or look, but if you want an amazing curry, look no further. The mix of spices are legendary and I have seen people from India claiming it to be the best curry they have ever had.

Tried this for the first time over the weekend to cure a curry craving. Fairly extensive menu with a choice of mild, medium or hot on each item. Not exactly the kind of place to go out for dinner although there is seating available.
I had the chicken tikka Marsala which was rich, creamy and delicious, and no complaints whatsoever about the portion size, which for the price is fairly substantial. The naan bread was a little rubbery but tasty. The service is friendly and only about a 15 minute wait for the order.
Will definitely be going back.
We have been eating here for the past 10 or so years, the food is some of the best Indian food you will taste- get past how it looks and just enjoy the food!!!

Went there for the first time the other day, after considering it for a while.
The place doesn't look inviting, but their food is really good!!
Prices are very good value for money and I would recommend Shamiyana to all.

Best is to call in your order and you can collect 10-15 minutes later.

Curry has to be my favorite food, and Shamiyana is the most convenient for me to pop in and get take aways. I've never had a sit down meal here , but it's not really kitted out for sit down dining, considering they have a few plastic tables and the place is lit up with fluorescent lights.

I'm often surprised why they're not busier than they are because their food is really delicious. Prices are average and reasonable -with a wide range of dishes and curry accompaniments.
They're happy to cater for specific "heats" so if you want a extra hot korma they are able to do that for you. Best bet is to phone in your order and go and collect it - or have My Delivery do it if you're that lazy.
