Review Happy Chappy - Durban

Shana Rampersaad
The mutton bunny was delicious and was complimented with salad, pickles & vinegar chillies. The presentation was on point, and service was impeccable. I can only fault the location, the area is a bit dodgy, other than that I have no complaints, I am a happy chappy!

This little take away has stood the test of time. They are trading for over 30 years, so they must be doing something right. By chance I happen to cone a cross them this afternoon located at their same spot in Mangrove Beach Centre, North Beach Durban, I order a quarter mutton bunny which a eat on their seated balcony area. I remembered this place from 20 odd years ago. The food was served on a large army mess tray with plenty of salads and over flowing gravy. I dug inn, and enjoyed each and every bite of the delicious bunny with a lovely patatoe. Meat was tender and the spices was just the correct mixture resulting in the perfect gravy. Just a note sitting on the balcony does allow for your food to get cold quicker. On exit I chatted with the friendly owner Jay. And reminisce about days gone by and the changes that have come. He been trading there for more than 34 years and when I told him that he must be doing something right, he was the first to admit that it was not easy and he faced many a difficult days by he persevered. Oh the plus factor is They are Licensed so you can order your favorite alcoholic drink with your delicious meal. Highly recommend.

2022: Tried first time today...amazing service from Fanele..friendly smiles and delicious Mutton bunny... even allowed us to taste the curry before we bought... #winner #foodfantasy #Abcreates #HappyChappy Update Visited 19 Aug 2023: Please note we wanted to go back based on the reviews on Tik Tok for the top Dog jumbo hot dog and wife wanted the bunny chow. Bunny: was not the taste nor quality we expected as previously- very cold bread...little gravy and filling...could be due to us going there around 3pm on a Saturday where the bottom of the pot remained.. I'll go back to try again as this is not the happy chappy usual standard. 5/10 The top dog was simple but amazing and could feed maybe 2 to 3 ... it was an experience to see that mammoth hotdog with juicy smoked Russians, chips, bacon and cheese arrive at our table. Was amazing 7/10 Service was awesome as always 10/10 Keep up the great work and stay as humble and customer orientated as you are. Maybe work on heating up ur serving trays and maybe closing off a bit of ur balcony for the cold and wind.

Came down to Durban for Diwali, and visited happy chappie Absolutely enjoyed the food. Jay is such a cool and humble guy. It seems my wife and jay are relatives. Small world!!!. I’m told he is moving to a bigger place down the road. All the best to Jay and his team. We actually planning another trip to Durban and will definitely visit again. Regards Malcolm & Lucy. Chow is top guys. Can’t express myself more

Always leave here a happy chappy after brekkie. Been eating here for more than a decade and chows are always amazing. Staff are friendly and helpful. Jay has always been the main face of his business and gives you the royal treatment. Yes that is a little bowl of mutton curry on the side #why not 😁

They say in JHB the best place to find a bunny in on the N3 and head all the way down south. That is definitely true and that place is Happy Chappy. This gem of a place has been open for 32 years and counting, located in Durban City. If you looking for a complete experience, look no further. Please note it's unique and I definitely found the entire atmosphere very appealing. From the drive, to the parking, to the second floor, to the entrancex to owner greeting you, to the fully stocked bar, to the balcony over looking ther city streets, to the smell of food from the kitchen and the smell of the city streets with the smell of the ocean and slight humidity, the warm welcome from the staff and owner. This is before I even got the food, 3 of us ordered, 2 veg's bunnies and 1 mutton bunny. This has been the best bunny I have ever eaten, the flAvour, the presentation, it was absolutely to die for. Seriously the food had that wow factor, and the pricing is very reasonable. Seriously if you haven't been here, you should pop pass and decide for yourself. I'm a very much a happy chappy. Thank you

I had a quarter mutton bunny and my son has a quarter beans bunny with mutton gravy. Whilst the beans with mutton gravy wasn't on the menu, the staff were extremely accommodating. Both bunnies were great and very flavourful. Will highly recommend and we will go back for future meals.

I've been visiting this place a good couple of times now over the last two years and I'm yet to be disappointed. The meals are always served hot without a long wait too. On my last visit I had my usual Mutton Curry Bunny Chow and it hit the spot just right. I've had the Sugar Beans Bunny Chow as previously, and that is also a high recommendation. Service is always quick and efficient from the owner himself. A place I would highly recommend if you are on the Durban Beachfront.

Excellent bunny chows and my friend had the most tender mutton bunny πŸ‘―β€β™‚οΈtop of the range... Shouldn't say this but they easily compete with Goundens πŸ€”πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸ‘Œ

The menus have been revamped and new items added. Many favorites on the menu such as the samp and mutton, beef bunny, M4 mince sandwich, Chip, cheese & gravy and the breakfast. A nice secluded area at the back and drop down sails to keep the weather from affecting your experience. Take aways available and a variety of local and imported beers that wouldn't commonly be seen elsewhere.

Excellent bunny chows made to perfection...the venue is small and intermate with a variety of food items on offer... We had the mutton bunny which has to be one of the best around...the owner was very friendly and polite... Highly recommended and I hope to try the other dishes on offer...

My go-to for the most consistent bunnies in Durban. Can be a bit oily at times but that is a quality that makes a good mutton bunny a good mutton bunny. Meat quality and serving is always on point, and pricing is good too. Jay is a great host and it's a lovely spot to chillax. Parking is an issue though.

9/10 rating! Flavour, heat, portion size, amount of meat to the value for money, this place has it all. I make it my duty to try bunny chows at the places people rate as the best in my home city, Durban. Happy Chappy was one of them. I've had many mutton bunnies that were delicious but never hit near perfection. Until now that is. If you haven't tried their mutton bunny, then do yourself a favour and get down there.

Absolutely Fantastic Food and excellent Customer Services. The Mutton Bunny was about the best I have eaten this far. Would highly recommend this place

Really yummy bunny chow. Looks like the place has been around for many years - definitely more regulars than tourists.

Best Bunny Chow of my life!...also happened to be the first one too. I did really like it though. I had the mutton and it was tasty. Quite spicy coming from a relatively spineless culture. Go get yourself one.

Small resturant with limited place to sit down, but don't let that stop you from going in for one of the most devine bunnies I have had in while. It's was Devine and what I love about it was the bunny was not oily or water based. Will definitely visit again to try out the breyani and trotters and beans.

If its heat you are after, then you will get it here. More sting than flavour. Super prompt service. However it was not the best bunny chow I have had in Durban. The gravy was quite heavily laden with oil and cheaper cuts of meat were used. Both my husband and I did not finish our bunnies, which is a very rare occurance.
