Review Ton Hoi - Durban

Dan Moodley
A well established restaurant in Glenashley. Family owned and run with warm service from Jenny who runs the front. My pics show multiple pics of my favourite dish here, Peking Duck, served the traditional way with pancakes and veg condiments and really tasty hoisin sauce. So far this is the the best duck dish I have had in South Africa on multiple occasion’s. The consistency is a just ideal. Crisp on the outside, while still juicy on the inside, with a tasty hoisin sauce and good pancakes. Please call ahead to book your duck, its best that way. All the other dishes here are amazing too. The salt and pepper prawn, the Singapore noodles, the mixed fried rice are great and just some of the highlights. They even have a secret chinese only menu. Ask for it, if you can read it. This is my only go to Chinese restaurant here. Always a safe bet when in Durban.

This is an old time favourite and classic Chinese Restaurant that has been going for many years. Although the decor might be a bit dated, the place is clean and the food is great. Although some of the individual dishes may be a bit pricey, if you take a menu combination, you get great value for money. Whenever I go with my father and his late sister's fiancee, they always go for the crispy prawns. On this occasion I had a a set menu combo with the aforementioned. My cousin was not feeling to strong and at first she only wanted a soup, but then changed her mind for a different set menu. Food as usual was great and the place was pretty busy for a Saturday night.

Food was good and owners were friendly and accommodating. The pricing was a bit expensive but the portions were of a good size.

Fantastic food. Full of flavor. Had the beef flank wontein soup. Meat was soft and super tasty, broth was addictive just the noodles were abit spaghetti like. Had the stir fried duck with oyster sauce. Man it was yummy yummy. Definitely worth a revisit.

Absolutely the best sushi in Durban, possibly South Africa and maybe even the world! Love this amazing restaurant and would recommend it to absolutely anyone! Brilliant service!

Great Chinese restaurant - friendly welcome, fast service from knowledgable waiter - wide variety of authentic foods as well as several set menus so lots to choose from. We had several different meals & all had some of each - good value for money.

Great western Chinese food. The owner will make you traditional food now on the menu if you ask nicely...well worth a visit.

Best sushi and spring rolls! The family that owns it, they’re really nice and always polite. The food is authentic and so is the mayo, sweet chilli etc which is a huge problem with a lot of other Asian restaurants bc they just use Nola.

Quality Chinese food, family owned and run. Blessed to have this family restaurant in the community of Glenashley. Such a treat to get authentic Chinese food whenever the urge is there! Definitely a good place to take visitors. Very unique vibe.

The food was delicious however the menu on this app is outdated. Ordered takeouts and my bill for 3 meals came to R100 more than expected according to the old menu prices. But can highly recommend the food, just check prices on ordering

What an excuse for sushi, literally just opened the box to find the most sorry excuse for sushi. Even at half price of R120 this is pathetic. Only wish I had opened the box before I left. The one is supposed to be salmon roses.

Probably the best sushi, nice and big and full.
Compared to Bamboos small pieces and half filled.
Sort of friendly people at the desk, Chinese lady

A friend had a hankering for Salt & Pepper Prawns for lunch, and even though I’m not wild about Chinese food, that sounded appealing. And since the portions were quite big, we didn’t even bother with rice or noodles.

When the prawns arrived, I was a little intimidated by the amount of garlic. Not so much Salt & Pepper prawns as Garlic Prawns, if you ask me. But after scraping most of the garlic off my first prawn, I got over myself and tucked in with relish! In for a penny; in for a pound.

Needless to say, this wasn’t the most elegant dish, and it was a case of fingers were made before forks. At R138 a portion, they weren’t a bargain, but they were rather good.

I ended the meal with a bow-tie and ice-cream, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The bow-tie was light and crisp and the ice-cream was exactly what you’d expect.

The Ton Hoi doesn’t offer much in the way of décor, ambiance or service, so if the prawns hadn’t been good, it would have been a bit of a waste. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a long, lazy dinner, but if you're a fan of Chinese food, it might be worth investigating.
