Review Pop Up Society - Durban

Wayne Puckree
Nice and relaxing place to hang out and socialize. Menu is a bit on the pricey side. Worth the experience though. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Always good to see the basics being done properly. Would recommend people to try Pop-up society. I enjoyed the atmosphere.

This is a very nice vibe area to hang out in. The food here looks good but all I've ever had are the shakes and they don't disappoint. Very friendly staff.

We walked past after we saw the milkshakes , and stays for lunch, the milkshakes are huge , the burger was huge , loved the cream cheese sauce and it was honestly the best lamb patty I have ever had, lots of mint and tasted spectacular!!

My strawberry daquiri was like a 2. ( from american standards) but from what i tasted in south africa so far about 4/5. Reason why i gave this spot a 4 wad the milk shake my wife ordered she said it ..........sad the best 1 .she ever had. She plans on visiting the place again just for the milk shake. So they are getting 5 stars for milk shake. Customer service was cool nothing extraordinary but we went during a dead time period.

Pop-up Society is the place known for its 'freakshakes' and after all this time, they still dont disappoint! While a bit on the pricier side, their amazing menu and friendly service make this Glenwood staple worth a visit if you are in the area. They have a great selection of burgers to satisfy any craving and being dog friendly, with a menu for them too, means that your companion can enjoy a tasty meal with you. A great place to take the kids, enjoy a cocktail or have a date night, Pop-Up caters to a wide variety of people with their great atmosphere, good menu and efficient servers.

Great service, good food, and lovely time had at the milkshake festival for our daughter
Linda Wiedner
Cute alternative restaurant with good burgers and heavy, impressive milkshakes. Very quick service and well priced.

What an awesome place to host birthdays or just hanging out. It's my favourite spot for cocktails in Durban.

Called ahead to reserve a table just for the milkshakes.excellent service and great milkshakes.

Friendly staff, good food, hidden gem in glenwood
Clarissa Konar
Great milkshakes, but have to wait a while to get a table because they are always busy/full.

We hadn't made a reservation, they were fully booked and extremely busy, and yet, the manager had given us a table withing a minute. She was really friendly and willing and able to assist us even in peak hours. The milkshakes are amazing and the food is fantastic. Service was brilliant and friendly and fast.

Best place to chill with friends and family. Good food. The service is AMAZING.

The milkshakes are to die for, truly an awesome experience that one should really go for. The burgers, I would say about average when they came to our table they were a bit on the cold side but besides that the flavour was about average. The milkshakes is where this place really shines.

Note: Always book a table before going to avoid disappointment! The staff at here is very friendly with the owner doing everything she can to make sure we are happy. The milkshakes definitely one of the main attractions here and the are nice and light, not too thick so you can even start your meal with one without ruining your appetite. Definitely gonna stop here every time I am by the coast.

Went here for lunch and received attention immediately. Wait time for the food was shorter than the wait time for the milkshakes and both were great tasting. Prices are on the higher side but not outrageously so as portions seem to correspond to that price. Decor is really charming with bright colours and DIY-esque vibe. Would definitely return again. One downside is the fact that it's in town which means there is no parking but other than that I have no substantial negatives.

Really don’t know what the hype is about.
Milkshake was not wow like everyone claims.
Overrated venue. Never went back.
Try 4 types of the milkshakes and everyone was dissatisfied.

The milkshakes are nice but honestly i had way better ones, this place seems to be getting alot of likes but i honestly dont like it, the food is not nice and their service is really bad, it takes a waiter ages to get to you even if you waiting for something really simple like a straw.
I wouldnt visit again.

I’m not really sure how this place has a good rating. Their milkshakes may look amazing, but the consistency is very thin and watery. Food is oily, and doesn’t seem to be prepared on site. There are far better options in the area for a nice meal out.

We really had a good time thank you, the burger was aaaaaawesome and the service we got from our waiter was very fantastic unfortunately I forgot his name but it was a white guy..I'm definitely going back very soon.

Good outdoor setting. Very relaxing. Popped in for a snack. And the options were limited. Opted for baked goodies and we were not amazed. It looked so appealing but did not taste so.

Excellent service and the Pop Up Society burger is honestly one of the best burgers I've ever had!!! Left a lasting impression on me- I need to have it again!

I visited Pop Up Society three times. I was disappointed two times and extremely satisfied once. The service is consistently lovely. The waiters are very kind and always smiling which makes the experience nice. The food, however, is very inconsistent. I am not sure why this is so because the one time I had a good meal it was absolutely amazing! I ate all my food which is pretty rare... I normally have it boxed to take away but that day I ate every little bit and was beyond satisfied. The other visits were very different. The food was bland and not memorable. I have yet to try their milkshakes. I am hoping those will live up to the hype.

Pop up society is in the most colourful little building oozing with personality. From goldfish in a tub to doors as tables with little sayings on it. I absolutely loved the individuality about this place.
Parking was an issue, but aside from that the desserts we decided to try were lovely. The presentation was unique and full of surprises. The waitress was extremely helpful and patient as we decided what to order, she was friendly and greeted us when we walked in.
This place is a little gem, worth a visit..and revisit.

Good location and outdoor seating. Its a place you will probably go to once or twice at the most. Great looking, fun, artistic milkshakes - but that's about it really. The food looks good but had no taste at all- lack of salt and flavor. Oily chicken coating - expected it to be crispy. Waiters are random, we never got the same waiter throughout our meal.

I absolutely love their milkshakes! The service wasn't too bad but the milkshake is out of this world! It's so tasty and not too thick. Definitely a must try

A fun, funky burger joint with decadent burgers including lamb, ostrich and beef. I love that you can trade your chips for a green salad with feta, tomatoes, cucumber & a mustard dressing without an extra charge. The burgers also cone with 3 onion rings- those could have been a bit crisper but were a nice thick cut. Its a good treat when you want to spoil yourself a bit.

The first time I went to the Pop-up Society Glenwood, a kind sorceress (under the guise of "manager") informed us that all cocktails were half price as it was their first birthday! This was great news to me, having went along to lunch with the group knowing full well that I had only 20 bucks in my handbag. My long island iced tea packed a punch. I immediately thought "this is my kind of society".

The 2nd time going to PopUp ended up being more on the gluttanous side of life. One word. Freakshakes. I had a...wait for it... Amarula Milk Tart Shake. And that miktart placed on top of that shake tasted like it was made by the MilkTart Gods themselves. The vibe, like before, was light, happy, colourful, JOYFUL. Number one place to go when the munchies kick in.

Great food! Great vibe! Pop Up Society is one of my absolute favourite little Durban treasure! The staff are always friendly. The burgers are just enough to satisfy your hunger and when paired with their indulgent milkshakes is a heavenly combination! This place is a must visit!

So. Let's get this out of the way first, the death by chocolate milkshake didn't even put me in a coma. Maybe if it wasn't named that I wouldn't have had expectations for something super chocolatey- the actual milkshake that is. However, the red velvet milkshake was pretty good. Neither of them deserve to be on the Best Milkshakes in Durban list- sorry.

For dinner I had the garlic lamb burger which was okay, average really. And the fries were more like the fries from those old school fish and chip stores that wrap it up in newspaper, which I'm not a fan of.

Other than that, the restaurant is situated in place with a cool vibe and the waiter was attentive and friendly.

Good heavens, this milkshake and burger was bigger than my face!! I think I've just ate enough for the next few days, I'd recommend having lunch here if you're preparing for hibernation. Really good burgers here👌🏽 I think there was the right amount of cream in that milkshake to stop my heart for a minute.

Not impressed by the set up, feels a little make shift...perhaps that why it's called pop-up? The naked ostrich burger topped with cheese sauce and accompanied by battered onion rings and salad was surprisingly good. There were so many elements on the plate the prices seem unbelievable. Highly recommend for an unpretentious night out with a group of friends.

Came here for their freak shake... ended up having the best 'fall of bones' ribs. I had a burger and mrs had the ribs. Burger was a 2.5 / 5 at best. Only giving this a 4 as the waiter had as much personalilty as rock. Went back a week later for the shakes and wasnt dissapointed. Mediocre service again though.

Finally tried the much talked about Milkshakes. By far one of the very best I have ever had. Tried the Death by Chocolate one and I would recommend that to any one any day. Even though the place was almost full, we got our food in no time. Very reasonable pricing and perfect for enjoying a meal with friends and family especially on sunny day :)

My second time at Pop Up Society and just as expected the food was divine. My girlfriend and I ordered milkshakes - she had death by chocolate and I had bubblegum bliss. I especially enjoyed the cone on top because it meant I could remove it, scoop some of the ice cream into it and voilà, a 2-in-1 deal. The flavour was awesome. Reminded me of Wicks bubblegum which brings back good childhood memories. We also had a strawberry cheesecake. I was allowed to eat all the strawberries off the top since she doesn't like them. I didn't complain. The cheesecake was smooth and delicious and that's a big thing considering I'm not the biggest fan of cheesecake. All this sugary goodness was thoroughly enjoyed to the sounds of live music and a very lively atmosphere. 10/10 once again :)

Milkshakes were awesoooooome! Food was OK, the general vibe and service is excellence at its best. Will definitely go back again for the death by chocolate shake..
Very young, hip and funky restaurant. The food that I ate was not excellent, wouldn't go back. The waiter was new, the food tasted nothing as I expected. It's a great spot for drinks, period.

The place to be. Pop up society makes me wish i lived in Durban again. They have created a great welcoming atmosphere. The highlight are definitely the designer milkshakes.

Listen, we don't usually start with dessert but THOSE MILKSHAKES ARE WOW. I live for Turkish delight and the milkshake was the best of the three. The strawberry had Strawberry Lips in it and it just wasn't my kind of thing. The chocolate one was also great. These shakes are filling so you might not have space for food.

I made space.

I went on two separate occasions and on both visits I had the Pop-up society 'platter' to share. On the first occasion the food took too long, the fish was underdone and the onion rings were great. On the second occasion the fish was done well, the lamb was succulent, the onion rings were bad and the food still took a while to arrive.

On both occasions they were out of the craft ciders which was disappointing. I am, however, thankful for the bar there.

I enjoyed trying the place out. I like the playful artsy decor. Great spot that is family and pet friendly.

So I've become SUPER OBSESSED with the little treasure that is 'Pop Up Society' !

Even though I still haven't had their bomb delicious milkshakes, I still love the restaurant !

The WiFi there is GREAT just like the food ☺😊.

The best part about this place is that it's pet friendly. Pets are given the royal treatment and I really appreciated that. The service was brilliant.
Although very visually appealing, the food was nothing to write home about and the milkshake was not as thick as I expected it to be.
Still a cool hangout for some drinks and cheesy fries with friends.

The best thing about this place is Chelsea - amazing server !!!
The milkshakes are very average considering paying R65. Fake bottled chocolate sauce , cheap strawberry syrup. All looks , no substance. The donut was tasty. Presentation wow. Ingredients need improving.

Best milkshakes ever! Loved the feel and ambience of this place. Owners have done a great job in making guests feel welcome and comfortable

I went the on a Friday afternoon with a friend. I had the Pop Up burger and I absolutely loved it. There is room for improvement though, but I loved it.

Decided to try it out as we work close by. I have seen lots of pics online and their menu looked impressive. To be honest you go more for the experience. It was ok not outstanding. We ordered the Death By Chocolate milkshake. It was very runny, not thick or creamy. I had the lamb burger. Again, it was ok. The bottom bun was soggy! The only solace was the service from from waiter to owner.
Dani
Was on holiday here and wanted to try out there milkshakes as they are R45 compared to R110 here in Jozi

We were put in a little room near there bar which was very quite and we were a but forgotten there. So atmosphere wasn't great
The milkshake was nice but not outstanding
The chicken was so spicy I felt like a fire breathing dragon
The vegetarian salad was so spicy as well
Eish my tongue was on fire the whole time
Don't think I'll be back in such a rush

Everyones been talking about the gourmet milkshakes so i had to try it for myself. The death by chocolate freak-shake was my favourite with a cute little dark choc cupcake was yum . Disliked the strawberry shake, it needed more strawberry essence 🍓 and the doughnut 🍩 was stale. Nice set up overall.
Simone Naicker
Nothing is better than a burger and milkshake. Pattys are homemade and theres a carb free option called the "naked" burger. The milkshakes are the highlight no indulgence spared - you can even add alcohol to it.

I visited Pop Up Society on Friday afternoon with my cousin and dad. We went especially for their much talked about gourmet milkshakes. I was impressed with their child friendly, pet friendly atmosphere and colourful atmosphere that really attracts many customers to them. It was recommended that we try the death by chocolate milkshake. The milkshake was Devine! It was topped with cream, Oreos and cupcakes. I enjoyed that it was too rich and heavy even though it looked like so much was going on. For mains my cousin and dad both ordered the pop up hamburger and my dad swapped the lamb patty for a veg patty. I ordered the feather duster burger which came with an ostrich patty. Onion rings, chips and a side salad accompanied our burgers. The burgers were good however I would prefer if the buns were toasted. The chips were crispy so I enjoyed that. My dad asked for chili sauce and the only one they had was the chefs chili sauce that you have to pay extra for. Since our waiter mixed up our side orders he offered it to us on the house. Despite them being super busy the service was good. Enjoyed my experience and looking forward to visiting again.

The Gourmet milkshakes are amazing definitely worth it and value for money! Pop up society brings a unique atmosphere to Glenwood a restaurant worth the visit.

Milkshake heaven - seems to be the best way to describe this spot. The chicken is also really good-quite affordable and comes with delicious sides. Good craft beer as well..

Specialists desserts are the main attraction here, a great location for one's weekly cheat meal. I enjoyed the atmosphere, service was impeccable and the food on offer caters for a variety of tastes. The alcoholic selection was however lacking with no draught beers being available. I will however visit this destination again, the plus point being it's really close to home

While their Death by Chocolate Freak Shake was great, their Red Velvet Gourmet Shake failed at its name. The Snack platter was pretty average and while the menu announces a sauce, we did not receive any. A small little restaurant with room for improvement.
