Finally got to sit down at the new venue after enjoying take outs with Kung Thai. As always the food is great. Authentic Thai flavors and the service was as good as always. The venue could do with some extra decor to “warm” the space but otherwise was a great evening. The banana dessert is a must - best shared as it is rather large.

AMAZING FOOD We had the crispy wontons which were delicious, the filling tasted super fresh (not fishy) and the sauce served with it was so delicious. We also ordered the I also had the paa chu which were donut shaped tapas with a prawn and crab filling as well coated with panko and deep fried. They were also very crispy, cooked to perfection and seasoned well. For mains I had the vegetarian wok fried dish with the bamboo shoots, basil and mild chilli. The bamboo shoots were absolutely fantastic, I enjoyed the textures and the veg were cooked perfectly, none were overcooked. The broth was lovely and thick and the best I've had from any Thai place so far (I mixed in some of the sauce that came with the wontons and that took it to the next level for me by adding a bit of sweetness). I had it with the egg noodles. The veg noodles had also had tofu which I hadn't had before so it was exciting to be able to try it. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are well worth it. Will definitely be back to dine here.

Amazing authentic experience! Food is as good as you would get in Thailand. The Managers are so helpful and accommodating and I think we got food that is not even exactly as in the menu. It was amazing and the “little” dessert 😲 can’t be described... u have to go try for yourself & take someone to share.

Never disappoints! Year after year we come here the food is exceptional. We did miss the ambience of the old location. The new location feels a bit stark. But the food was excellent. Angry curry with crispy fried duck is definitely the best.

The crab and prawn donut was exceptional. Taste of my prawn wok was really amazing. A must if you in Durban North and you love Thai flavours.

Fresh and flavourful food with a nice mix of textures. Flavours are well developed. If it says garlic expect to notice it. If it says chilli, be prepared. Most of the meals have the option for you to choose the protein, the starch and the sauce so get creative. My personal favourite was the Kung Thai sauce. Let's face it, its named after the place, it's got to be good. Mildly chilli but I have also enjoyed the "Bun Mee" sauce before which is extremely chilli. Staff are friendly and attentive. The lady who served us was very good to us, a friend arrived late, midway through our meals, the waitress took her order promptly and also rushed it in the kitchen without us asking, within 10 minutes we all ate our meals together. There's a fair amount of vegetarian dishes on the menu. I sampled some of my friends food and found both of the days orders to be quite enjoyable. Food prices are a bit steep, expect to pay around R250 per adult inclusive of a few drinks. Both times I ate here I didn't mind paying this because I was so satisfied with the food. Portion sizes are also good. Wish I had taken photos of my food before we started eating. Below is a photo of the dessert we shared.

It has been eons since I’ve considered to post a review on any venue, Lo and behold, KUNG THAI is so deserving of the absolute praise I wish to convey. I’ve tasted authentic cuisine from my visits to Thailand and actually thrilled to find the true flavour available at KUNG THAI. The staff are ever so friendly and attentive to the customers needs, be it from the serviettes to the final takeaway provided. I must commend the Chef who is easily visible at kitchen dedicated and working her magic to insure that only quality and delicious dishes are served. Also the gentleman owner took the time to greet each guest and enquire about the meal chosen. This restaurant is truly a gem that shines so magnificently and I wish that they continue with the amazing dishes and wonderful service provided. Khop Khun Khrap, KUNG THAI. Ahaan aroi maak maak.

Food was well prepared. Service is excellent from the management and owners who are constantly checking to ensure you are comfortable. Seating is limited, so peak times can be a challenge to be accommodated. Booking is best. Parking a huge challenge.

Friendly service. Delicious, flavour filled food and a nice atmosphere for groups and families.

The most delicious vegan Thai food I have tasted, outside of Thailand, of course🙂 The tofu stir fry was magnificent. Vibey & laidback. Chilled atmosphere & the owner is so friendly too. Staff were attentive & responsive. All in all, a beautiful experience.

Kung Thai has consistently been the best Thai food we’ve ever had: A delicious fusion of flavours in every dish; fantastic, friendly service; and a warm, inviting space.

A very good restaurant, great food and ppl. A little bit rushed tho on a special occasion but the food and service makes up for it.

This has been my favourite restaurant for years...hadn't been in a while and was so happy to see that it was jam packed last night. The food never disappoints in terms of flavour whatever you choose from an extensive menu...and the service is always attentive without being overbearing. Well done Kung Thai you deserve 5 stars Thank You

We stumbled on this gem while visiting friends in Durban. The server/manager was fantastic. She suggested dishes and was quick to accommodate our preferences. The starters of puu cha (prawn & crab donuts) and shao mai (dim sum dumplings) were hot, fresh, and delicious. One highlight, suggested by our server, was the crispy duck. The skin was crispy, sauce was a pleasant mix of spicy/sweet. After many disappointing duck dishes in our recent past, Kung Thai exceeded expectations. We were pleasantly surprised by Kung Thai and look forward to going back next visit to Durban.

I love Thai food, and Kung Thai doesn’t disappoint.

There’s a great outside deck area, which is perfect in summer, thought in winter I prefer to sit inside. The owner is invariably around keeping an eye on things and occasionally taking an order.

Last night he recommended a new item on the starter menu, Pulled Pork pancakes. We shared these and the Crispy Pork Belly to start, and both were excellent. The Pork Belly is also available as a main dish. Friends ordered the Tom Kai Gai (chicken soup) which was delicate and delicious.

Usually I don’t get further than the curries. The Red Thai is a particular favourite and if you like hot food, the Angry Curry is great, but be warned, it is seriously hot and if you’re not a chilli fan, don’t venture there. But last night we opted for the Crispy Chicken. Their non-curry dishes come with what might seem a bewildering choice of sauces, most of which sound appealing. I once asked them to bring me a tiny taste of 3 different sauces because I couldn’t make up my mind and they happily obliged. Last night we had the Chu Chee sauce which has a mild chilli and isn’t very sweet.

My only criticism of Kung Thai is the dreaded TV. No matter how hard I try, if it’s in my eye-line, it’s not easy to ignore. But then again, if you choose your seat well, you can usually get around this.

I had the Kung Thai duck and it was perfection! Highly recommend the crispy fish with Lahu sauce, although it's very hot! Efficient and friendly service with a lovely atmosphere. Quite pricy but definitely worth the indulgence.

I find the Durban North branch much nicer than the Umhlanga branch. I've been coming here for many years and although I've had a few meals that didn't reach my expectations, overall I really do like this place. The chicken phad Thai is one of the best I've had and the Kung Thai duck is incredible.

Food is great, a good mix of non authentic and authentic items. It is a bit on the expensive side but it's worth it! There are many things I would recommend on the menu but I wouldn't recommend the chicken satay as a takeaway as it gets a bit too hard.

We get to order lunch for the office every Friday and it was my turn to choose, and again I chose this place hoping it would be better this time if I explicitly asked for what I wanted. We ordered the Honey Glazed duck with steamed veg (not crispy), Fillet with jasmine rice and another honey glazed duck with noodles. We collected and paid R458 ish in total. When we got back to the office I indeed had rock hard "crispy" duck and they didn't include the jasmine rice which was charged on the receipt. I called and informed them of this and instead of letting us return it for the correct meals were told they would discount us the next time. Fine I dished out my food onto a plate and as I was about to take a bite of the duck noticed something odd. FEATHERS!!!!!! They had not cleaned the meat properly and had included feathers in my food! I immediately sent an email with images and still haven't received a response or even the discount voucher. Absolutely horrendous experience and it sadly isn't the first!

So my cousin was feeling for Thai one night when we had come to visit. So she decided to take us to Kung Thai and swore the food was amazing.. The waitstaff seemed friendly enough but weren't all that attentive. We ordered starters and those had to be the highlight of the evening, we ordered the fried crab and prawn rings and dumplings, we also ordered a side of fried spinach (which was really good). For mains I had their raved about Beach Garden Salad. It came okay-ly presented but smelled horrible. The minced chicken on top was just awful. The entire dish just didn't do it for me, the only thing relatively good about it was the friend spinach. My brother also didn't enjoy his beef noodles which just looked bland and the beef seemed to be overcooked. I certainly won't come back.

Hidden away in the busy area of Durban North, this little place didnt blow my expectations. I thought the food was average. I would give this place a 2.5 rating but I wasn't happy with the staff. They were particularly friendly and seemed abit lost. Unfortunately I ate at SIAM so your food rating goes down by two stars :(

I have been to Kung Thai so many times and it never fails to impress me, this place makes me the happiest person. The quality of the food is consistently good coupled with great, friendly staff!

Favorite restaurant in Durban (along with the Umhlanga store). Their Chicken Pad Thai is without a doubt the best I've ever had - in the world. Although it is a bit expensive the portions are generous and all their food has been amazing and delicious. They do, do take-aways contrary to what this page says as this is our Sunday night dinner every Sunday.

We went for our company lunch. Everyone was impressed from the starters to our mains. I ordered crispy duck - delicious. Love the dumplings. My friend ordered the crispy chicken, she still speaks about it.

I have very good memories at Kung Thai...had the tom yum soup, crispy prawns, beef green curry and lastly the deep fried ice cream. Everything was absolutely fresh and flavourful. The service was really good. Its quaint atmosphere made it quite the romantic spot.

My girlfriend and I went here recently for our date night.
I ordered the chicken and noodles in a red thai curry, my partner ordered a thai green curry. I have to say both meals were delicious. The service was excellent!!! Initially the thai green curry was way too hot but the waitress very kindly sorted it out and made it much more edible.
Has a great authentic feel. Meals were averagely priced.
