Review Fat Fish - Durban

D Moods
Good quality seafood platter for 1, generous portion, well priced. Good service. Small, clean, neat setup. Will visit again to try out other items on their good looking menu offering a variety of seafood and other dishes. I've been back since to try their fresh fish of the day, which was Red's. It was done simply to perfection on a bed of spinach served sizzling on a skillet. Hence my reason for the 5 star upgrade.

Fish from fat fish Westville was awesome. Its flaky and so tasty. The prawms with the side sauce were also great. I will definitely buy from here again. I bought fish curry today it was also very tasty, especially the salsa.

Very happy with my 2 hake and chips with a side of tartar sauce. Ordered a starter fried squid heads which was very big also with a sweet chutney sauce. Like the presentation in pizza boxes and wax wrap, good value meals.

One of the most desirable dining experiences in the area. After sliding through the door you are greeted with a warm feeling, a friendly feeling. The staff are aways smiling and making sure you are in great care. The small restaurant personally made me feel at home, with the twist of better food. The food was fresh, even for seafood that is. Same can be said for the little fish store, neatly kept to the side in its own element. My dining experience even lasted a little past closing, due to patient and hospitable staff. Making sure we savoured as much of the experience as we could. Would love to be a regular. Highly recommended place for those who love a cozy dining experiences.

Really enjoyed my creamy muscle pot and fish of the day meal, fair price for excellent quality-I know good food takes a little time to prepare so I wasn't too stressed with he wait, helpful staff for recommendations. Clean and organized. An old favourite so I will be back.

What a beautiful experience! Pre covid we could never get a table here either on a Friday or Saturday...food is amazing! Lungi was delightful and such a food host. Will def return...

We felt like fish. With limited options in Hillcrest area we wanted to try somewhere different. Google research and we found Fat Fish. Took a drive and was pleasantly surprised. Starter was 3 cheese prawn tails - thick and juicy prawns. Squid heads for my daughter. Generous portion. Mains was line fish (fresh Kingclip) surprise and i had the thermador which came with more prawns and muscles too... All in all fantastic. 5th 🌟 - cause its under new management and the owner is super keen to up the ambiance and extend the menu offering.

Our new little gem in Durban. Fresh, tasty seafood, friendly and attentive wait staff, good company is all you need for a wonderful evening out. We will be going back and recommending to our family ❤️

The owner is friendly and welcoming, the food is phenomenal, I've had sit down and take away, the hake is succulent and perfectly cooked, the chips are fresh, and the service excellent. Only have a pic of the take away, with my hand in so you can see how big the portions are, ( and I have big hands 🤭) and I had already eaten half the chips (was hungry 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Small, cafe style, fish specialist restaurant. Had a shared table salad, together with 12 prawns. The salad was delicious, and I'm not normally a fan, and with the prawns was really great. Staff very helpful and friendly. I believe you can take your own wine, if that's your thing - not sure if they charge corkage, they should.

This is a quaint neighborhood setup - perfect for a mid week date. Food is fresh and cooked home style. I had a very delicious red Roman - caught by the owner that morning. Be sure to ask what the specials and recommendations are. Also be sure to make a booking. Homemade Malva pudding for dessert was a winner

I had the Kings Combo special today which was a combination to King prawns and Yellow Tail Salmon. Food was brilliant. Subtle spicing allowed the flavor of the fish to shine through and dishes are kept simple. Please bear in mind that menu is basic and you pay separately for sides but food this good is well worth it. Portions are excellent and the food is always consistent.

Went through with my mom for early Friday lunch.

It is a small restaurant, with a basic set up and they do also sell fresh seafood on site.

Service was friendly and efficient. The fish was fresh and well prepared. The fried calamari was definitely the winner over the grilled though.

Worth a try if you're in the area.

I went to The Fat Fish for the first time and I was blown away by the quality of their produce.

I had the hake and prawns and it was amazing! I had a side of slaw , tartar sauce and chips but I felt the chips lacked imagination perhaps a seasoning option on the chips should be offered like a lemon and garlic which will pair well with the fish or even a chilli salt option but something along those lines.

But with that said I have no issues in recommending The Fat Fish.

Honestly one of the best seafood places in Durban! Very laid back environment where the owner is happy to recommend and gets it spot on! Delicious!!

Good fresh food, perfectly cooked and a totally adequate, casual setting if you want to eat in. Essentially a take away and fishmonger, this is becoming a really popular eatery day and night; you might want to secure seating by way of a reservation.
The Fat fish in Westville!!!

This is my joint after a hungry stomach after school.

The fish burger is the best possible fish burger, its not dry but occupied with a sufficient amount of veggies mixed with a coleslaw texture. You will finish every bit of it!! Go there hungry.

I had ordered on another day a plain fish, which was tasty and my sister had ordered a platter with rice, fish and calamari.

Its a good seafood restaurant to try out. Do not forget to make a booking before you go, my family forgot to make a booking and they had accommodated us.

The service is good and I good place to go for dinner and lunch!!!

We had 3 x Calamari and Hake combos, we were charged R58 x 3 for the combos as per the prices on the board, then a further R19 x 3 for the medium chips(We did find out later that chips don't come with meals and are extras) and an even further R32 x 3 because we wanted grilled Calamari instead of fried, then to top it off we were charged R65 for a starter we didn't have, and had to inform the waiter twice before our bill was amended and the starter taken off. The quality and service would have been worth the money if we had paid R174.00 as advertised, definitely not close to the R327.00 we ended up paying! Wont be back!

Menu prices advertised on here compared to when I collected my order was hugely different. Had to pay almost R50 more for my order. Not very professional.

Very well priced, little restaurant, situated in Westville Central. The food is incredibly tasty, with generous portions. The restaurant feels homely and is great for a quite dinner. Definitely, would recommend all to give it a try.

OMG OMG OMG what a gem! This place is amazing! In DBN on business and it's hard to find a good place to eat so I turned to Zamato and up popped The Fat Fish. It looked small and more like a take away place so I decided to take a look but had a back up plan. WELL, I walked in and instantly felt at home. The owner greeted and offered me a glass of wine, within 2 minutes I placed my order for the Salmon as it the house speciality. WOW, is all I can say the food was beautifully cooked and so fresh. The owner Frank is an awesome man that has so much passion which comes through in his food.

By the end of the night I was invited to a table full of local ladies and the rest of the night was blissful, home away from home. I have never experienced such welcoming and open people in my life. Truly an unforgettable night, great food, great company and most of the best seafood restaurant I have ever found.

The funny part is that all tables were locals and when they asked me how I found The Fat Fish I said Zamato..........they asked what's Tomato lol, I corrected them and it progressed to Shamato. A place like this clearly does not need Zamato to bring in the customers. Go........Go Now! Definitely go back and back and back

Lovely quaint seafood restaurant where the owner, Frank is hands on and even catches some of the fish himself! Located at Westville Junction on Westville road in the heart of the burb. Known to be the best seafood restaurant around.
Sit in, takeaway or buy fresh/frozen fish for later. Fish is getting great reviews and fast becoming a regular spot for locals. No corkage on wine.

Take out ...Grilled tuna done nicely. Centre slightly pink.... just the way we like it. Calamari tubes and prawns combo also good. Lightly seasoned keeping that fresh seafood taste. Served with Greek salad . My husky enjoyed the fresh chips ... his cheat night .... lol
What an awesome little find. A completely unassuming little place in Westville that has the biggest flavor in town. Brilliantly cooked fresh fish, with the coolest guy running the shop, who could ask for more.
I can guarantee you would have never walked in and I bet you never thought you would eat such great food.

If I lived down here this place would be my local

Sit down; take a away - you HAVE to try! Amazing Squid salad (taken off the menu but if you ask nicely) they willing to do it. Jam packed with coriander, mint, red onion and deep fried (grilled can be requested( but not the same)). Fish is always fresh and options range from stuffed calamari starters, to chicken & prawn curries. Bring a cooler box with your booze of choice (you can buy there) and pay a R40 corkage fee. Sit down or take away you won't be disappointed. Ask for Frank (owner)- really hands on and takes pride in his establishment and open to suggestions. Give it a try, you won't be sorry!
