Review Roma Revolving Restaurant - Durban

Samukelisiwe Zulu
I hosted my sisters birthday dinner @Cargo Hold Restaurant and their service was absolutely AMAZING. Chef Warren and some staff members helped me with my decor setup without even having to ask. They went out of their way to make sure that everything was perfect(and exactly the way I want), before the birthday girl and other guests arrived. Even the ladies at reception were very welcoming, including the rest of the staff as well. The food was absolutely delicious, everything was just, 10/10 minus NOTHING!

Quick response received when we requested a reservation. We were warmly greeted on arrival by the host. Our waitress seemed lost but she did request assistance from the chef who was extremely accomodating. Chef Warren meals were delicious. The knife went thru the beef sirloin like a knife thru butter. The haloumi was absolutely soft and warm with a crisp batter. Pasta was well seasoned. The tank makes the experience at Cargo Hold a delight.

Cargo Hold is situated next to Ushaka Marine inside the ship. The interior where you can see a huge shark/fish tank is amazing! The pasta was a little overpriced but the atmosphere was good. Good for the experience.

Dear Warren and Team . Thank you for the amazing seafood platters and Lamb Shank. The views of the aquarium were spectacular .The entire team was so welcoming and professional, and all our expectations were met. We'll come back every time we're in the area. Best Kingklip I've ever had !

Very nice location and very nice decors. Lovely aquarium inside, which the kids and the adults will enjoy.. The only thing is that the food is ok.. With that great location and great decors.. I can only rate it for a forcing 4/5.. We had a great time there. Improve the food quality.. You gonna ge a 5 stars restaurant in Durban.
Cathy Hodges
The Stars are for the view. The food was what you would expect, good. But the prices are CRAZY and OVERRATED. But for the fact that I booked 2 weeks in advance just to get the best table by the tank, which i never landed getting. The only thing that was SUPER AMAZING and ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE was the tank. Cant remember much else. So, would i go again, yes but only for the view.

We visited for a pre-birthday dinner on a Saturday evening. Cargo Hold is renowned for the amazing aquarium dining experience, and being seated next to the fish tank is a one-of-a-kind experience. We ordered the aphrodite platter (seafood) which was fresh and wonderfully prepared with a garlic sauce, and the pork ribs which was average, and the chocolate volcano for dessert which was good. The service was slow, which was later explained that they were short-staffed that evening. All in all it was a unique and enjoyable dining experience.

Wow! I lived in Durban my whole life but only visited Cargo Hold in May 2022 with my person and then with my Fam in December 2022. Took my person there to celebrate our anniversary. I booked a table near the tank in advance. The views and food was absolutely amazing, the service was great. My person loved the lamb shank, couldn't stop talking about it. I ordered the prawn platter, absolutely no regrets 😍 When I went back with my Fam, we ordered the lamb shank, steak, seafood platter, chicken liver and halloumi starter. Definitely no regrets.

Watch the fish swimming by while enjoying delicious food!

This place deserves a 10 star rating. Nothing better than dining while watching fish swim right next to you. The food is absolutely delicious. A must for anyone visiting Durban

What an amazing experience. The head chef was so friendly and so accommodating. The food was "The Jobs"👌👌👌 The drinks and the dessert were even better. Thank u. We will definitely be returning.

Had my wedding at the restaurant. The staff are so accommodating and friendly. The food was amazing! It was an intimate wedding that was absolutely perfect! Thank you Cargo Hold.
Dirk Johannwerner
Service was a little on the slow side, and the restaurant was pretty loud, but the aquarium right next to the table was a killer, and the food was good as well.
Roylene Buchanan
I would recommend anyone to go to the Cargo hold, it was tranquil and inviting. The tank set up is so stunning and when the lights go off its something absolutely gorgeous my only nit pick would be for them to tank the music alittle as it felt one song played whole night but that's just a preference not a problem. It really was a wonderful experience

Cargo Hold Restaurant in Durban offers a unique dining experience with its stunning location in the old cargo hold of a ship. The ambiance is truly exceptional, surrounded by ocean views and a captivating underwater world. The seafood selection is a highlight, with fresh and delicious options. The service was attentive and friendly. A memorable dining spot for special occasions or a romantic evening.

Absolutely fantastic! Sitting at the fish tank is so relaxing, perfect for marriage proposals. The seafood platter was gorgeous with a delicious garlic sauce. The wine selection is good. The service must be worked on though, the staff member setting up at the door did not greet us, the waiter was also a bit condescending, however we held our own. My score is based on the food, fish tank, atmosphere and background music.
Arne Van Heerden
From beginning to end it was an amazing experience! The atmosphere relaxing and view stunning. Wonderful food and brilliant staff. The manager comes around to take your order and we received great recommendations from him. From starters through dessert not a single bad dish, all delicious (Me and my husband's dishes were (Starters) 1. Smoked chicken pancake 2. Calamari (Mains) 1. Lamb Ossobuco 2. Sole (Dessert) 1. Tiramisu 2. Cheesecake). Well worth the price. Our server Gordon also fantastic and friendly. Will definitely be back on our next visit to Durban.

Friendly service
The city of Durban looks really nice especially at night. Food was good, from starters to dessert. It was a great experience indeed.

I been to the Roma Revolving Restaurant several times but I am always in awe. The slowly revolving restaurant is classy and sophisticated as you view Durban town and the Indian Ocean. Perfectly located. The staff are efficient friendly and polite. The food divine.
Lynee Pillay
I promised my 6 year old son a visit to the revolving restaurant and he was fascinated with the view. Food was as good as it was 5 years ago. Waiters are on the ball, especially the ones that have been there for more than 20 years. What I love about Roma is the freshness of the food. They create a kids meals or half portions.

Food was sumptuous with fantastic views. Great food, great service from the legendary Gino, Tony and the professional staff. Will definitely be back many times again and again.

In one word: Excellent!!!
Best waiter ever: Brandino!!!
We will come back next time and always!!!
Great view on the entire city. You turn around and you have new picture from the window. Excellent!
Our waiter, Ravi, was extremely well mannered and helpful. The view was pleasant, and I would recommend to stay through the night. The food was good, al dente.

Succulent and saucy lamb chops with nicely seasoned fries. Tasty and soft fish with a side of lovely mash. The food here is lovely. The major selling point here for me though is the breathtaking views of Durban City. One minute you're overlooking the gorgeous harbour and sea and the next you're overlooking the pretty bright lights sprinkled across the CBD. We went there for supper so our view was pretty much light light lights and I loved it. Very romantic place to spend an evening pigging out and gushing about the fantastic views every few minutes with your special someone.
Jakki Bousfield
Wasn't wowed by anything besides the view. Service was below average, food was okay but nothing too special and the decor is very dated. The view is truly something special but the motion (while very slight) did make me feel quite nauseated after a while. They add a ten percent service charge to your bill automatically which felt like a bit of a cheek considering that we were disappointed with the service. I don't regret the experience but can't say I'll be back very soon
Kevin Lightbody
The food - OK, no wow factor. Service non existant. Was suppose to be a special evening for the wife but wife was deeply disappointed. Strange part was that the restaurant was full. Would it be safe to say that the theme exceeds the net worth of a good dining experience and that the food and bad service is mitigated by the theme. Been there done that - won't be back.
Carlétjie Van Eck
What an amazing experience! Great food excellent service and it was such a special evening. Will definitely be back here when I am in Durban.

The stunning 360 degree view of Durban at night including the harbour and the CBD with all the lights on, make for a lovely experience, from 32 floors high. With you slowly rotating doing a full revolution in an hour gives you a spectacular view of the beautiful city.

The service though is slow, but the waiters are friendly and chatty, but trying to get your waiter can be a bit of a mission. Food, in my opinion, was average and takes a while. The lasagna, well that was just plain old lasagna, but nothing wrong with that. The steak was just ok.

We were given a bill at the end of the evening, which included items we did not order, but that could have been a genuine mistake, but make sure you check yours thoroughly.
Yuvthi Harrielall
Lovely restaurant and food. Beautiful views of Durban.
The waiters need to be more alert and faster

Had the duckling a la orange - loved every bite.
My boyfriend had the spaghetti pescatore. It was slightly sour but still delicious.

It was interesting how the desserts came on a tray. I liked that the desserts were brought to you and you could eat with your eyes first.

Food: 1
Ambiance: 1
Service: 1

The only thing great about this place is the dessert trolley and the view... not the grandest menu and set up... needs a revamp badly!
Simone Naicker
Well I was impressed when my husband made a booking here - born and bred in Durban and I had never been. Zomato has many mixed reviews. Well here’s my take - the Italian boss guy and the matradee avoided only our table but we were ok with that - we like conversation to be uninterrupted . Our waiter ravi was great - helpful and attentive. Experience was good but food average. Go for the experience 😊
Pallavi Bhogal
Awesome view! Next time I come I'll remember to bring my own food. The menu is very basic but despite this, the quality of food seems to a problem at Roma. Our waitress was basically MIA for most of the night. Definitely not value for money inspite of the amazing views.

I have been here twice and i really enjoyed the experience... the food was great indeed.. I like the setting of the place...especially the carpet floors and velvet curtains giving you sort of that elite feel of when the place originally opened 45 years ago. i feel its elite of old school and i am an old soul so for me the place is excellent.

My experience from they steak at once and the prawn the second time was nothing short of perfect.

I have been to durban many times and never heard this place this time, on my 10 year anniversary I googled romantic places and came across this beautiful revolving restaurant and the bonus is its Italian my favorite cuisine 👍🏽❤️.

I browsed there there menu on line and felt happy no pizzas but not problem Italian flavours.

I booked my reservation for the lunch as that part of durban can get a bit dodgy at night and you need to park in a alley way.

I arrived at the restaurant 15mins before my time and my first site was a employee in a muscle t shirt drenched in sweat, none the less I awaited for someone to approach me and seat me, while my wife browsed around, eventually some one approach and asked if i would like to take a seat and Escourt me to my seat and handed me a menu and also most instantly ask what would a like to drink, I paused and said let me check menu he replied drinks are not in the menu but you want wine or cocktails, i asked for no alcoholic options and he said coke or fanta, i asked if he had mocktails he recommended strawberry daiquiri i order it, i then placed order mushroom chesse starter and the asparagus, and mains veg lasagne, napolitana and princess sole with prawns.

We were given stale bread sticks and to slices of bread that smelt like cardboard and two tubs of first choice butter in a beautiful butter dish.

Few minutes later the started arrived greasy greasy greasy nice flavor but asparagus spears yellow, after eating the starts i then waited for mains, i waited and waited and eventually received my mains also greasy and buttery to the max the prawns were actually tiny shrimp in a chowder sauce, my napolitana tasted ok but just greasy the lasagna i did not even eat just ask them to put it straight in a doggy back and the dishes were old school cafeteria style... i was not really worried by the 1970 styling and lack of decor and maintenance as i am more focused on a great plate of food, I promoted not to have desserts, the bill arrived and came to R700 with a forced 10% service fee of which was not exsisting none the less a paid it and game all food back to them as it was not worth taking home R700 for 6 pieces of asparagus with chesse and mash and one mushroom with chesse and half a glass over sweet strawberry daiquiri. Done..... Never in my life again and never to be mentioned.

The revolving floor is really amazing, a truly wonderful thing to experience. However the decor and food is stuck in 1973 I felt like I was in a time warp!
We went out for our anniversary for lunch the views were spectacular but that’s it we got out of the lift and was met by a gentlemen in a vest no one came to welcome us seat us or anything not characteristic of a fine dining establishment.
The menu was not great everything contains cream we had the mushroom and the asparagus starter which both had the same cheese sauce and mash thing sort of slapped on this tired crockery. The plates were hot the waiter served them to us with a pink Mr Price torn piece of face cloth that smelt of bleach.
The uniforms were old and untidy the place had a musty stuffy smell, the blinds were broken. The only good thing was the flamboyant Italian owner who has also not moved on since scareface!
We had main meals of line fish and a napoletana pasta the plating was shocking not fine dining at all just food slapped in a white over used and washed plate. The manager, staff and owner really need to go out and see what’s out there South Africa’s culinary world is moving so fast and become so amazing that there isn’t room for this unimaginative tired places.
Really the worst 600 ever spent we waisted all the food as you just can’t eat in a place where you not comfortable! The thought that crosses your mind is if the dining area is this bad imagine the kitchen and suddenly your stomach starts churning.
There were random not uniformed staff or cleaners 🤷🏽‍♀️just like walking around doing things.
I couldn’t stand to be there a min longer and left without desert or even ordering a second drink!
PLEASE DO NOT EMBARRASS DURBAN BY SENDING PEOPLE HERE.

Roma has been a family favorite. However, I haven't returned for a few years. I'm so glad I took that break as I was welcomed to a different, fresh and exciting experience. Valentines lunch was superb. For starters we ordered calamari rings which we enjoyed. Mains included prawns which we thoroughly enjoyed. Seafood appeared to be a selection for most today. Lastly we were treated to desserts from the trolley: a slice of cookies and cream and chocolate mousse. Whilst this appeared to be from Chateau Gateaux, it was delicious nonetheless. When the bill arrived it was fair given our meals, service and the experience. The waiters were friendly. Although the restaurant was fairly busy ,We had no long waiting periods. The view was by far the best. I will definitely return to Roma for yet another great experience.
From my experience:
1. Best views
2. Friendly and helpful staff
3. Wonderful food (very good italian food)
4. Loved the desert table. Their pastry chef has worked for them for nearly 40 years.

Incredible.

I am so surprised to see this place does not have a 4.5+ rating.

So I decided to read other's reviews to see why.
Main points they complained about:
Not vegan, not vegetarian, no ample parking and one person even complained that the owner didn't make a fuss of them.
In all likeliness these people need a reality check.

Thanks Roma for a wonderful time!

Outstanding food. Outstanding service.
10/10!
Definitely a must go to!
Food was excellent and waiters and waitresses very friendly.
Desserts also excellent!

I went to the Roma for the first time this past Saturday for lunch to celebrate my birthday and I was disappointed. I chose the Roma based on good feedback from older colleagues and family of mine. I am sad to say that it was a disappointing experience and a far cry from what I was told the place was like in its heyday. Service was slow and cringe-worthy at times. Some of the younger waiters really need a lesson in etiquette. The view is exquisite though and was the highlight of the afternoon.
The owner didn't even bother to acknowledge us or check up on our table, instead he choose to entertain the table of tourists seated close by and made a big fuss over them.
(puzzling to say the least) Are the locals not good enough for some common courtesy?
Our food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. My duck was mediocre and lacked flavour and the mashed potatoes didn't taste fresh. I had much better duck in other establishments in Durban. My brother had better luck with the fish. My mum said her chicken dish was average and so was my dad's lamb. Some of the side plates given to us were dirty!
On Saturday, the restaurant was more than half empty at lunch time (this should have been a warning sign) so there was no reason for slow and sloppy service. We had to ask for our bill twice and that too from another waiter because our waiter was nowhere to be found. (beware that 10% is already added to the bill).
The decor needs a serious revamp. Yes, I get that they were going for the retro theme but some of the stuff is really tacky and belongs in the 80s (and this is from a guy who loves 80s memorabilia). The restaurant also needs a good and thorough cleaning. Parking is atrocious and I was constantly worried about my car despite the car guards. I rarely travel into central town and this trip reminded me why.
The Roma has loads of potential to be a good restaurant. It has amazing views over the city which is the reason many of us choose to visit in the first place. Management needs a complete overhaul in terms of service and food to reclaim its glory days. I don't plan on going back any time soon.
On a side note, it would be great if someone opened a revolving, high rise restaurant in Umhlanga. Great views would be guaranteed and it would be safer.

I have frequented this restaurant many times in my life. It has always been a family favorite, but I feel that is partly as it has a memories of times gone by. We went this last Saturday, and I was not looking forward to it. The last time we had been there, the curtains seemed as though they had not been cleaned since the 80's and the bathrooms needed A LOT of attention. At least this time around, the curtains looked clean. As always, I had checked the menu beforehand to see what I would likely order in that evening. Their vegetarian options consist of what is probably 1 bland salad and then 1 pasta dish. While they may believe that their menu is quite classic, it is very outdated, I'm sure a re-vamp would do them no harm.
The waiters were quite aggressive in the beginning when taking the drinks orders, and were then nowhere to be seen for the next 20 min or so. We were eventually served by the Maitre D, I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a special touch - it wasn't. After placing my order with him, the Napoletena pasta, with no parmesan - he told me that he would not be able to sleep if that was all he had to eat. This was uncalled for and quite rude.
The food also took a very long time to arrive, and we had not ordered complicated unusual dishes (Steak, Fish, Lasagna, Pasta). The serving sizes were average. The presentation could have done with a lot of work, chips and veggies were just slopped onto the plate it seemed, and of course the crockery is as old as the restaurant itself with their emblem. I can only speak for my pasta dish, which was quite tasty, I am still however waiting for the side of chilli. Everyone else seemed to have enjoyed their meals. So, the food was good, worth the price? debatable.
The cherry on top however, was when the bill came. The waiter who brought us our bill, we had not seen the whole evening, he just appeared, and then stood there while we checked the bill - did not move. Just stood there waiting for the payment, which was a little odd, and rude. We payed, and not 1 min later did he return and ask us to please leave if we don't mind as they had to prepare the table for the next guests. This now, was totally unacceptable. I could stand the tacky decor, the cheap comments from the Maitre D and vacant waiters. This is a no. Perhaps had they been more attentive when we first arrived, and not just gone missing, we would have not been there so long? I made my disdain for this matter quite clear. I honestly hope that this is the memory that stays with my family and we don't have to go experience "The Roma Revolving" ever again.

Once in a lifetime experience, one of a kind in Durban. I especially love the duck. The service was great. Book in advance. Very good ambience, charming decor. I was dissatisfied that there was no set dessert menu and that the waiter goes around with a trolley of desserts especially if someone has already picked the desserts that you want.
Otherwise good

Went there after years a little while back and the food coupled with the great service and awesome view made for a wonderful date night. We shared starters, mains were delicious and the epic dessert trolley was all delicious..

This is a great place for a breathtaking dining experience. The views, especially at night, decor, music selection and old fashioned styled waitress make for an experience. The food however is very average. The maitre'd was rather condescending when I was trying to get clarity on a few dishes. The service was practically non existent. I had 3 courses. The most outstanding was my crayfish soup. My mains was dissapointing and the 'hand made pasta' turned out to be vermicelli from a packet. Definitely not fresh. The dessert trolley cakes all looked like they were from chateaux gateaux. The cassata was average. I tasted some of the seafood pasta from my mum in law and it was great! I think the more average priced dishes are ordered frequently and are well prepared.

Visited this place over the weekend. Customer service is really bad here. Being a vegetarian, there isn't many veggie options on the menu.

I ordered the veg ravioli from the menu. My food was served in a small dirty plate (with hard brown dirt) with only about 7 pieces of ravioli. Take note of the pic attached with parmesan cheese sprinkled on top before the food was sent back. About 5 to 10 mins later, I got back my ravioli in a different place with different garnishing and the sides slightly harden. If I didn't know better,I am very sure that the food I sent back was just put into another plate and placed in a microwave to be heated. Gross!

The ravioli was not good at all. To top off the bad service and bad food, the 10% tip is forced on you.

Old school as it comes! You find very few restaurants anywhere in the world like this hidden gem. A classic menu which I bet hasn't been changed in decades, reading the menu took me back to my memories of the long gone restaurants I was treated to as a child. Yes the service is a little old school, yes the wait between starters and main course was a little long. But that's the quirkiness that has almost become a distant memory from another era.

I mean where can you meet a professional 30 year veteran on a desert trolley , serving classic recipes only your grandmother could have made, I presumed lost to the new generation of chefs a long time ago. But unbelievably Roma has survived and I am very privileged to have had the chance to dine in another era.

These businesses in my opinion deserve our support more than any others. stop eating cheap factory produced franchise rubbish, save up a little extra cash for a real meal and good glass of wine at establishments like Roma before it's too late.
Londiwe Buthelezi
Went there last night. First of all, the prices are higher than the ones here, add about 20 - 30 % to them. The food was absolutely delicious, the portions are small but surprisingly filling. The waiters are absolute darlings, I get why they have old people as waiters.. It goes with the theme of the restaurant, it's all about class. The food takes a while to get prepared but I guess it's because they want us to enjoy the view. You honestly feel like royalty.
Megan Penguin-Leigh Swarts
Great experience, stunning views.
Parking is not the best but there are security guards.
The staff are super friendly and their coffee is delicious. Good pasta however the restaurant has old fashioned decor. We only stayed for one rotation because we started getting motion sickness.
Veroshka Narayadu
Very Bad Service Received. Was there for almost 2 hours and all we had was a drink and a starter. Waited 40mins for a waiter to take our drinks order and after receiving the drinks another 30 mins later we had to stop a waiter that was walking past to take our starter order as we were very hungry. While having the starters we asked for the main to be taken to which we were told they not allowed to take the order they will get someone to take the order. We waited for more than 30 mins and no one attended to us. We thereafter asked for the bill and left.
It was my husband's birthday dinner and we left hungry and angry.
This was the worse customer service received.
The little food we had was good.
If it wasn't for the scenery we would've been out of there sooner.
Fred Van Hulten
We booked for 19.00 and got our main meal only at 21.30. We ordered Chataubriand with bearnaise sauce. The bearnaise sauce looked liked it was bought at the supermarket in a packet and microwaved. Certainly not the creamy sauce we would expect. Just in case we did not like the sauce we got a pepper sauce as well ??? Lost the plot here. The fillet and the views were worth it but overall a disappointment. It would have been great if I just had a spaghetti bolognaise. Therefor the Roma Revolving is great for a simple meal and the view.
Megan Batty
Absolutely love going there. The service is outstanding very friendly and very professional. They are very informative about their food and the food is just outstanding. Lovely view and outstanding food. Definitely a must go back.

We went to Roma revolving restaurant to celebrate and it was a great evening! The views are worth the price of the food and it's a real novelty! The Italian owners are absolutely delightful and so friendly. The bread sticks started us off on a good note and I thoroughly enjoyed my pepper fillet with delicious pepper sauce and vegetables. The butternut was really tasty. My fellow diners had veal and fish and both really enjoyed it. We then shared a creamy three chocolate mousse and a really yummy tiramisu. I recommend the tiramisu as I enjoy anything coffee flavoured!
All in all, worth a visit and enjoy the warm Italian hospitality.

Firstly, no parking. The parking lot below only has ten spaces allocated to the restaurant, therefore you must either park in the street or down a dark alleyway, where more parking is available but with no security.

Our reception was good and we were seated promptly. Our drink order was taken in about 5 minutes so that is not bad. But that's where the not bad service stopped. Drinks came about 20 minutes after that. At about the 1hour mark I requested bread sticks as I was getting hungry no one was taking our order they came about 15minutes later and to my surprise our bread sticks were actually 4 pieces of stale bread.

Having now requested to order twice a waiter finally came and took them. A further 30 minutes passed and we got what could pass for food. Ps. Still no second round of drinks have been offered at this point. We eat and they clear 10 minutes later. The manager comes by and he offers us a round of drinks. Naturally, I declined as this would mean a further 30 minutes before we could order dessert.

Waited another 15 - 20 minutes to order dessert. No one came. So I called the manager and exclaimed that for an establishment that chargers so much for what they call food the service is really terrible. Give him exact times for everything. He looks sincere when apologising and tells me he will find the waiter and they will both be back.

10 minutes pass and our waiter arrives to kindly offer us our dessert. I decline and ask for the bill. Within a minute he brings that (amazing). He then argues with me after hearing from the manager that he did bring us drinks. (Remember the first round, about 2 - 2:30 hours earlier) and that he was told to apologise. Great really. Even after this completely terrible service. I give him a tip of 10% which isn't even appreciated.

Do not eat here, also if you do all listed prices are wrong. Even on their OWN WEBSITE. Add 20 to 30 % onto those prices.

Ruined what was supposed to be a great date for my girlfriend and I.

FatElla
I think this restaurant only gets this rating for the very friendly and funny italian owner (I'm assuming) that comes around to talk to us and sometimes personally takes orders. The thing that people go to Roma for is, of course, the revolving bit. I have to admit that that's the reason I wouldn't want to go back. At one point they turned the speed up. Gosh. I was so dizzy. I just wanted to get out of there. The artwork on the wall is stunning and I really must recommend you try Fillet a la roma. It's served with the most sublime brandy butter sauce. I just love it.
Shantha Padayachee
My all time favourite place. Been here so many times over the years and the quality of food and service remains outstanding. My all time favourites are the chicken pancake starter and the Old Man Steak. Will continue to go back. Have many beautiful memories made here which are very precious to me. Well done Roma

What an awfull experience!! On our arrival 17:55, we were told to go to the upstairs bar because they only seat people from 6pm. We climbed dirty stairs to the bar...a non existing bar... a waitress was sitting there smoking not offering us anything...dirty walls and very tacky seats.. looked like no one has been up there in ages... Went down to sit..very confusing...not even the waiter knew whether he was coming or going. Then for the shock of my life...our fish came...looked like someone vomitted on my plate...salad was dead old. Our veggies came,4pieces of pumpkin and beans apparently from bangladesh?? Thought it was an italian reataurant..
Horrific!!! Could not wait to get out of this dirty old place! And not even 2 mention how bad the area is.
Definitely not going there and would not advise anyone else to go there. DIRTY, CRAPPY FOOD AND VERY UNSAFE
Really great novelty but novelties wear off and what's left thereafter is substance, good quality food and excellent service. This is unfortunately not what my experience had in store unfortunately. When I entered I was so in awe of this place I felt transported to Rome and was truly pleased. There was some confusion before we were seated and thereafter we waited forever for another server to take our food order. Half way through having our starter I started feeling unwell, as we waited for our mains I was feeling horrible at this point I had to excuse myself at which point I started throwing up, I continued to do so until we left. I had a horrible headache and I was just generally unwell. I have a strong constitution but the combination of bad food whilst rotating was just too much for me. I can't see myself going back.

Amazing place. The view is incredible and the staff are very friendly. The food was great possibly the best Italian food in Durban. We were treated like royalty. A definite must. The dessert guy AkA the Cake Boss has a huge personality and great cake.
Britt Meugens
Such an incredible restaurant. The view is unbelievable and the atmosphere is great. The only major downfall is that there was no aircon last night. By the time we had finished our mains we were literally sweating from the heat that we didn't even want to stay another minute for dessert. Not a nice way to end such a lovely evening.
Nicholas Bell
Went here recently for the first time to celebrate my anniversary. It was such an enjoyable experience!

The view really does add to the whole vibe of the evening! We really enjoyed the food and the service.

My girlfriend had the calamari starter (her way of measuring restaurants) and said that it was possibly the best she's had, which is saying a lot.
I had the chicken livers which were good. Then I had the lasagna for the main which was nice, but didn't quite live up to my expectations. Steph had a seafood dish was absolutely delicious.

We didn't do any dessert, but they looked nice.

Only thing I can add is don't order the house wine, it's poison.

I'm a regular here whenever I go back to Durban! Love the view and the food, honestly the seafood is definitely a must and dessert is to die for!

My mum took my fiancé and I out to dinner. It was such a lovely experience. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. My choice of starter was a smoked chicken pancake which was covered in a creamy sauce, for mains I had the ravioli dish which I found pretty average. The ravioli was chewy and tough but the sauce was delicious. Dessert was brought on a trolley for us to choose from. We chose the chocolate mousse, red velvet cake and a pecan nut cake.
The view of Durban is pretty amazing and such a lovely view to have dinner.

We had a friend's dinner party there, absolutely beautiful.

It was our first time, so everything was exquisite.

We were served by the owner, which was quiet an honor and he made some great recommendations for us. Enjoyed my generous veal casserole portion greatly.

The girls enjoyed their meals too, we loved the decor and ambience.

We enjoyed the dessert trolley - cake is a girl's best friend.. The service was good, we didn't really have to wait a long for our meals - we ordered our starters and mains at the same time which made it easier with receiving our meals.

The 360 rotation is absolutely amazing and the background music was lively, and kept the conversation flowing. Will definitely go again..

What an old school gem. Loved the waiters. Some of which have worked there since 1969 !!
Although the portions were on the smaller side , the flavor and quality is 5 star.
The view is of course like nowhere else in Durban.

Incredible panoramic 360 degree views of Durban City Centre, Coastline and Harbour. Good vegetarian pastas. Un-intentionally retro. Revolving still fascinating for all.

I'm being generous here. Had a booking for 6:30 but we arrived 15 minutes late. Could be the reason for the atrocious service. Our order was taken at 7:15, starters arrived an hour later. The calamari was nothing to write home about. The chicken pancakes were fantastic. The problem is our mains only arrived an hour later. We were starving and to make matters worse the waiter forget to order 2 platters of prawns.
First he offered to split one platter while they made another, 10 minutes later he arrives with both platters. He apparently stole someone else's order.
When we finally ate,the meal was mediocre. The rice was drowned in garlic butter and greasy. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. The decor didn't add to the ambiance. It needs a serious upgrade. It reminded us of the 80's. We were stuck in a time warp. Most embarrassing of all was that we went with friends and we were looking forward to a wonderful time. For one of durbans landmark restaurants it was a let down. I won't be going back anytime soon. The only thing that could redeem it was the beautiful sights of Durban.!!

A pleasure from start to end. Had to move my booking twice, and they happily obliged even thou the restaurant was full to capacity. Well experienced and friendly staff kept us entertained throughout the night. The food was amazing, fit for the special occasion and prices weren't bad at all. For such at old establishment the deco is still amazing and the furniture in decent shape although it's showing some age.

Starter: crumbed calamari (2/5) - would have been good if it wasnt for the weird fishy after taste and being over chewy (also found fish bones????)

Main: Monrey (4/5) - cheesy steak fillet which was very good

Service: (1/5) - sooooo much of confusion amongst the waiters and they take forever to do anything...

Would have given a higher rating if it wasnt for the poor service....

Quality of food = Nothing special
Service = There when I needed them
Ambience = Quiet and Reserved, Romantic, great view
Reservation = Must make a reservation
Parking = Difficult to find
Neighbourhood = Felt vulnerable at night
Kid friendliness = Not really for children
Dress Code = Smart Casual
Cleanliness = Adequate

CONCLUSION = Worth a try

I went to Roma recently for what was my 2nd time going there! I was reminded of why i don't go there often, terrible service, making a book is rendered useless because even when u arrive on time we still have to wait 30min for our table to be set, waiters are off putting and lethargic! The food isn't great, the decor is absolutely atrocious and outdated, it looks and feels dirty, which is sad considering the amount of potential it has to be DBN's best eat-out with stunning views! I was extremely disappointed, the amount of time between my first dining experience and my recent experience at Roma was exactly 5 years and nothin has changed!

Hearty food👌
Passionate service (a little slow though)👍
Decor could do with some modernization....
But all in all, your palate will be well pleased 😊

Beautiful, elegant and something one should always experience! The restaurant spins slowly while you enjoy your food. The food is prepared well and made to perfection. The Chef is dedicated to such perfection. I enjoy going there it's completely unique and a place for special occasions.

We spent new years eve at roma. The service is very professional and the food is very good. I will say the decor needs some updating and maybe a good clean but other than that a very unique place to eat at.
The Taste Buds
The food at Roma was really really good. A group of 18 of us went up the 30 something flights to eat and drink merrily. The one thing we noticed was that all the meals had amazing sauces. That got us thinking. Do they just leave the sauce to simmer while the restaurant stirs it as it revolves... hmmm... amazing idea...

Tired and worn out interior. The food was a disappointment, steaks were bland and lacked flavour, the prawn starter was okay, the deshelled prawn dish was very spicy and rather expensive R 199 for about 12 prawns. The setting for our luncheon was great with fantastic views. The owner seriously should invest in an upgrade and improve the menu. Great service by the waiters. There is only so long that the scenery can keep the place alive for...

Friendly staff on arrival. The view of Durban harbour at night is mind blowing!!!! The atmosphere is created by the view. The deco is outdated! No complaints about the food as it was yummy!

Food was overpriced as is to be expected, but delicious nonetheless. The carpets are not ideal and the decor outdated. The duck d'orange was to die for. Lovely service and friendly professional staff

So very excited we are on our way. What a welcome. Friendly staff.... but im afraid thats where it ends. The menu is good but old, starters are main course size. I had the smokes wildebees carpassio which was killed with black pepper? "Dont know why the chef would put pepper on if the waitron offers at the table?" The smoked salmon and avo where nicely served with a dollop of caviar ,luckely since the avo was unseasoned and tasteless. The pancakes was the stater to order, it looked amazing but watsh out the plate are piping hot only to find out after you touched it since the waitron do not think it is important to inform you. Then we thought lets hope the mains are worth it. Very overpowering sauces. No garnish and clearly noticable that the food has stood under the pass for ages. But hey here comes the veg. The promised cream spinage was replaced with aubergine ragout and sweet "baby" carrots was sour😣. Okay never the less im very excited to experiance the flambe of dessert, "the finale of silver service" we decided to order the strawberries only to find out afterwards flambe are only done for 2. All good we where informed it will take 10minutes. Silver service are worth waiting especially if you are working in the industry you will know the effort time and prepperation that goes into this, so we waited, and still waited, and still waited, untill we waited some more. After a half an hours time of waiting we experianced some greatness about the "Revolving", and yes the dessert was the highligt sorry to say. At the beginning of the evening i would have loved to bring my sister from Germany to experianceI this restaurant in August when she visit but im avraid I will not return.

Whatever reviews I have read about this restaurant about the service being too slow, waiters not friendly, place dilapidated and food not good quality contradicts everything I experienced at lunch today.

I booked via email. They were very quick to help with bookings and extra information. When we got there the entrance was beautiful with statutes and artwork. The waiters who assisted us (and about 3 of them) took such good care of us. They spoke to us about the restaurants and made good suggestions with regards to meals. The food was delicious! Nothing could be complained about. The duckling ala orange is a must try. For someone who has never eaten duck before that leap of faith was well worth it.

The view...the view...the view...absolutely amazing. Seeing the harbour and watching the boats go in and out and the beautiful ocean there is no comfort compared to watching such beauty.

If you are thinking about visiting Roma stop thinking and go. You will never be dissapointed! We also had an opportunity to meet the owner who was incredibly kind and very passionate about what he does! Make sure you go on the roof top aswell to take in more of the beautiful views. Well worth the visit!

This place is simply amazing. For locals, you have to experience it at least once. And if you got any foreign guests this is a must. You view the whole of Durban in an hour of sitting there. The experience is phenomenal. The food is incredible. Proper Italian dishes made authentically. The decor and service is also of a high level.

A beautiful restaurant with a beautiful view. It is more fitting to go there in the evening. I was impressed with the starter (I had a prawn starter) for the main I had a sea food pasta which was good..The service was great, its a beautiful place! loved it!

I feel that this place could be so much more. It is an icon in durban and one of the last truly revolving restaurants. The food is very good and the service is ok but upon walking in you feel like you're in a casino hotel from the 80's. The same 'elegant' drapes still line the windows as you revolve around the bleery Italian murals that have faded along with the romas glitz. Even the fish in the foyers tank are screaming to be set free of this monotony. Sad considering the potential it has.

Best time to go to Roma is dinner time. The view is stunning. The restaurant takes about an hour to revolve. I have been there twice and I tried the pasta which was average and the next time I tried the duck which was good. Overall experience was really nice. Setting was intimate so would be good for a romantic dinner date.
Mayuri Reddy
Good experience as the novelty of a revolving restaurant is great! But the service was terrible. Not sure if it was just an off day, but one and a half hours to bring a menu is enough to raise some eyebrows.

In reading Roma's reviews, you'll notice that there are two opinions: it's either loved or loathed. It comes down to expectations.
For me it is a treasure, a remnant from the sixties/seventies. If they ever want to refurbish, I would like them to keep it in the same style, with the same old fashioned feel. On entry, you are transported to an earlier era -from the wellcome by the maitré to the red velvet window drapes and the old fashioned hotel style crockery.
The retaurant is 32 floors up and revolving slowly with breathtaking views over Durban and Durban Harbour.
Service is leisurely, with two head waiters taking all the orders. Most of the service staff have clearly been there for years.
To start with I had the Lobster Bisque. Creamy, savoury soup with good colour and a fair amount of fresh lobster nuggets - a nice surprise.
Fresh Yellowtail with a lobster sauce and mash potato was the main cource. The fish was perfectly cooked and very fresh. The sauce divine - creamy, glossy with good ballance of flavour.
Desert is served from a desert trolley. I must confess that the trolley itself is not aestheticly pleasing - puddings like tiramisu and peppermint crisp tarts are served in stainless steel pans, straight out of the kitchen. Plating of said deserts leaves much to be desired!
Crepes Suzette are prepared at the table - quite a show, but it's only available for two or more persons. I settled for Tiramisu.
Plating was poor but it tasted good! It might have been the best Tiramiso I've ever had!
I would go back any time!

The views are breathtaking. I have never experienced such. I went with my friends. We wanted to have a formal dinner and thought this would be a great spot. Lets start with the service. It was horrible. Some of the staff rude. The cleanliness of the restaurant could improve as I went to the loo and it was extremely dirty and disgusting. Then the food came. WOW. I had their Orange Duck. I wanted to have seconds. Amazingly delicious. Cooked very well. Tge food did not disappoint me at all. If they can just try and fix the other issues, its a place not to miss. The views are to die for. You get to see all parts of Durban. I would advise you to go during the day if you really want to see Durban and at Night if you want to have that romantic night for two with a lovely ambience and decor.

Roma is unique. In many ways it reminds me of the seventies and eighties - relaxed dining taking time to savour the delicious meals, being greeted by one of the maitre d' and thoroughly professional waiters. The service is deliberately slow so that you enjoy the ambiance and the slowly moving view of Durban Harbour and Durban city.
The menu is expansive and everything we have savoured was top draw.
For desserts the crêpes suzette is a must. This is one of the few restaurants in South Africa that not only still offers this classic but does it justice by preparing at your table with all the theatrics.
If you do not see the same part of Durban at least three times through your window, you have been too hasty!

Very old decor and the slowly revolving room left me with a slight bit of nausea. Waiters were delayed despite early telephone booking. Food was lovely despite having an abrupt waiter. Average experience with lovely views and food.
Sheryl
Went for dinner and enjoyed the slow pace revolving of the restaurant which allowed one to appreciate the tranquility of the Durban Bay at night as well as the city. We found the service efficient and personal and the various dishes ordered (which included pastas, seafood, chicken were well prepared). The dessert trolley was extensive and tasty. Although the decor and design is in need of urgent repair making the atmosphere unpleasant.

360^ degrees view of the Durban coast, amazing food. Romantic Resturant to impress your partner. Resturant revolves with amazing views and delicious food. Must go place

The views were amazing as always! The food unfortunately was not great! It was my second time to the restaurant and it seems as though the food has just gotten worse.
We were a table of 6 and despite all the tables in the Roma not being taken, service was hardly given. We had to wait an hour for the bail to arrive. And with 2 managers on the floor, we expected to atleast be asked if everything is okay.
Their Rump steaks are over tenderized and thus changing the entire texture of the steak.
Worst experience at a premium restaurant.
Over priced for average to below Average food and service.

Great views. That's what you go for and it always impresses. Food is great. I would recommend the Duck. Service is not what it used to be however. Very slow.
One of Durbans main attractions. Amazing atmosphere with the best view of Durban. Have been here a few times and have been dissapointed with either the food or service on multiple occasions but if you looking for that perfect ambiance this is the place to be.
Yuvi
Food was superb. That together with stunning views of Durban cbd, the harbour and Moses Mabhida stadium just made up for the lack of good service. With such an amazing asset of a revolving restaurant one would expect top notch service. That was my only disappointment.

This place is great. Getting a panoramic view of Durban while enjoying a great meal is unparalleled.
The service was great.
I highly recommend the fillet old man which is fillet cooked in brandy with creamy mustard and mushroom sauce served with noodles. Another great meal is the veal.
I enjoyed myself here but have to say the decor and general appearance of the roma is getting tired and in need of some redecorating ASAP.
Joshua Sehoole
Epic experience to eat on the 32nd floor while you're treated to an amazing view while you revolve. The food itself however is average. The complimentary bread basket was stale, but I enjoyed my spinach and ricotta cannelloni (however got no parmesan to go with it) and my girlfriend enjoyed her veal. The service we received from our waiter was below standard. But we ended the evening off on the bar on the deck, and overall, had a great time.
