Review Market - Durban

Nola Gaillard
Yesterday's outing to the Market was a first time for me. We hosted a bridal brunch. The venue is beautiful, different and unique... I really liked it! Definitely a must to host a party 🥳 The food was great but the service needs a bit of attention. It's not bad but it's not great! It would be amazing if the waiters were trained just little bit more to give it that extra special something... and then it would be wonderful. I'm not nit picking, I'm just being honest. I'd definitely go for another visit though.

Hadn't been in a few years, and I am glad I went. Albeit my meal was initialyy wrong, the manager was gracious enough to take care of it himself. Food was delicious; set up chilled, and atmosphere just a chilled vibe.

I've enjoyed coming to this gem of a place for years now. I love how it seems to look and feel better with each visit. A big plus is that it is located in Morningside, and so easily accessible, yet away from the hustle and bustle of Florida Road. It also means parking (on the street) is easier to come by than on Florida Road! The fact that it has an open air section and a covered section means that it will suit your mood on the day (as well as the weather!) The menu is varied, the food tastefully prepared (I always enjoy the pasta) and the staff are friendly, attentive and helpful. I gave the place a four star rating because there's always room to improve, although I can't think of anything specific that needs improvement at this time. I highly recommend this venue.

This place has great atmosphere. It is set in a perfect location which is easy to locate. The staff is friendly and professional while providing great customer service. The food is great, however it takes time to get to the table and the portions are a bit small. I enjoyed lamb chops and vegetables they were really good and juicy. I'll definitely go back there again and will recommend the place to others.

This is one of my favorite place, to eat. The choice of food offered is wonderful, the setting, and the service is 5 star. It's definetly value for money. The prentation and the rustic ambiance is second to none

love the atmosphere. particularly impressed with the poofy pillows. they look stylish, yet supportive. the malva pudding reminds me of home in a mysterious yet familiar way. i hope some day to visit and get deeply lost in the symmetrical drizzle on that salad

Food menu was excellent but the food did not match the expectations and the hype of the menu. The cappuccino bean was burnt and you could taste the bitterness in it. We were disappointed with the stale ciabatta bread. Overall the service was average and was disappointed that the chef only apologized to one table about the stale bread but neglected to come to our table to apologize. The setting was beautiful and very rustic.

Very nice, relaxed atmosphere, My friend and I spent nearly the whole day catching up, and boy this was the right environment for that, enjoyed the breakfast, the platter we had was not that good, we did not finish it. Friendly staff and amazing space for those Instergram pictures.

Impeccable food quality, service and attention to detail. Definitely one of Durban’s gems that have maintained their standards over the years.

Market [Cafe/Restaurant] - Hi Guyz, my better half and i had brunch at this restaurant yesterday and we were very impressed, nice quaint setting, friendly staff and management, but the food,,,wow, relaxed atmosphere with fine dinning at its best. The food was exquisite, the flavours in every bite will make your taste buds dance, i would say a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine or a Gin cocktail and enjoy a nice meal.

So yesterday, the Mrs and I decided to have breakfast at the Market restaurant. Someting that we did not regret. My wife is vegan, so she had a lentil sesame burger. Packed with awesome flavours. Just one bite and the look on my wife's face was like she went to heaven and back. I am Vegetarian , so I had poached eggs on a bed of potato rosti, with haloumi topped with a spicy tomato relish. The eggs were done medium as requested. Flavours again was on point. Service was excellent and our waiter was very informative about the menu..We will definitely be frequent visitors at Market.

It was my mum's birthday celebration choice. The food was great & tasty. I got a little annoyed regarding 3 small details. When requesting a extra glass to partake in sharing the jugs of water... I waited & waited. I'm not 100% if I asked twice. But I didn't receive desired glass. Another was the clarity of the pizza of the day. I may have heard incorrectly - but I thought I was to treat myself to a calamari & chorizo pizza. Once presented, I saw only chorizo. The live music was splendid & the ambience chilled. Clearing of the table could have been slightly faster, as I still had my coffee cup sitting from before & after my main meal. ( I had finished it before enjoying my main) The waiter ( unsure of name) did take names & dishes corresponding to requests, yet I got my mothers plate instead of mine ( even though we are both brunettes - or possibly confusion with assisting staff) So not 5 unfortunately. Still a fantastic spot & highly recommended for menu items. My mum still had a memorable event with family at The Market.

I had booked a table for 15 people for my girlfriends birthday on the 30 December 2017. When I made the reservation far in advance I advised I would like to use separate Bills as per family so everything will be covered for a big table and waiters can get their tips they deserve. When I arrived I spoke to a waiter who advised me once again this was possible and not a problem. 20 mins later a gentleman was speaking to my guests advising them this was impossible and not even addressing this with me as the host of the evening. I felt this was very rude to have done since I was the one requesting this and he made a scene at the table explaining that if they do the separate bills, then there is always money missing at the end. Which made no sense. It's usually when the bill is set altogether then money is short somewhere somehow on a big table. Never the less we had no option and continued the evening. I had to ask 3 times to have my whiskey in a short glass waiting 20 mins and then being told they don't have short glasses. Bear in mind we were a table of 15 and only 4 people had short glasses on the table. The restaurant at Themis time only had 3 tables at the time. When the food was brought out one of my guests had a hair in her pork and advised the waiter. She was told that is must be one of the guests in the restaurant since the fans are on. The option of taking it away and replacing the food was not offered. I think my guests were so taken back at the service at the restaurant and I had to apologize profusely and the evening became tainted. When the bill arrived, every person added in their share with added tip. Only to be told we were R350 short on the bill. After having a look at the bill we were told an extra 10 % I'd added on for tables more than 9- this figures why the manager refused to split the bills at the beginning. I didn't know why this was an issue as the regular 10 % tip service fee was already added in from our side. I have eaten here before and found it delightful but my latest experience has left a bitter taste and to add on this, I have sent an email request stating that I had very bad service a day ago to their email and I had asked for someone to please please respond and I have since not been contacted or even had an acknowledgement of my email. I felt really embarrassed to have hosted a birthday party here for 15 people and can say this is not a restaurant I will ever no my guests ever go to again.

I have just returned home from a disappointing experience at Market. I met 3 friends for lunch and ordered the butternut pasta - one of my favorite meals - after fifteen minutes I was told that the butternut was not ready and that if I wanted to continue with my order I'd have to wait 30 mins for the butternut to be ready. My friends were quite willing to wait as we were happy to catch up but nonetheless we were still a bit peckish - we called the manager and asked if there was anything we could have to tide us over while we waited...olives or Bread or something...The Manager was not willing to even consider that and basically intimated that I needed to really order something else. Which I did reluctantly. After our meal we decided to have coffees and dessert. At this point the waiter spills the coffee into my lap - I had to ask for napkins and a wet cloth to clean up the mess - which I did myself with no assistance from the waiter. I then had to wait for a replacement coffee - at which point I had lost my sense of humour and had to ASK for a replacement. All of this I find unacceptable at an establishment of this repute. The irony is that I had been asked to book for a supper on Wednesday night for a group of friends but nothing today at lunch convinced me that I should return. The Manager offered to take off the coffee off the bill but I insisted that I would pay the bill in full as that was not my intention for voicing my disgruntlement. The reality is that you have a manager who does not manage and serving staff who are not trained to deal more effectively with issues. Indeed, after paying the bill the bill the waiter showed no remorse and the Manager was no where to be seen to make any attempt at amends and ensure that I return as a customer.

It was just the four of us. The duck shld have been crispy not just FAT hanging. The presentation on the starter - was poor. The chefs burger , no excitement , expected something exotic , different, presentation did not do anything. The waiter was efficient. On ordering dessert - 45 mins later , as we wanna pay n leave , he appears with the dessert, apparently another waiter served our order to someone else. Ambiance great. Outside seating wonderful. Music at good level. Not too well advertised. The prices for the food is a little heavy .
