Review The Little India Restaurant - Durban

Ishana Sing Rathilall
We were so warmly welcomed by the staff, beautiful restaurant. It's so spacious, neat, cozy. Lovely outdoor seating area. The owner is very friendly. The food was good. The Malaysian chips was lovely and the Manchurian Mushroom was perfectly seasoned...tangy and sweet with a slight crunch from the spring onions. The Naan's were delicious...crispy and warm, perfect to soak up the gravy. Waiter, Nono was so sweet and her menu knowledge was amazing. She made some really good suggestions. Lovely experience.

My cousin took me to their favorite spot.. Now I know why. I gad the prawn and chicken Breyani, beautifully fresh and large prawns were a delight. My niece enjoyed the butter chicken curry and my cousin had the prawn and chicken curry. Everything was delicious, we enjoyed the soji also. Very friendly staff 🙏

Authentic Indian Cuisine. We really enjoyed our meal here. The service was fast and friendly and our food arrived nice n hot. The menu is very diverse so loads to choose from. I highly recommend the Veg Thali - a wonderful array of delicious flavours. I did think the lighting was too bright and harsh. Personally I prefer softer, warm light in a restuarant. This restaurant has bright cool light. Also there were times when people went outside to smoke and didn’t close the door properly which meant their smoke was blowing in.

Little India is a fantastic restaurant. The food is as good as when I was in Kolkata. The portions are huge, and the staff are extremely helpful. Good prices, and lots of vegetarian options. A limited wine selection, but they do serve alcohol. Next time I am in Durban I will come back for sure.

This little gem of a place has amazing food..... But it starts off great from the time of making the reservation! The kindness when you call, to receiving a call on the day you will be going to the restaurant..... A warm welcome on arrival..... Lovely waiters and waitresses including uncle Jaya and the other lovely people. They go out of their way to check on you, making sure your meals arrive timeously.... The food is amazing.... And the desserts are heavenly...... And if you have a special event, like my mom celebrated her 60th a while ago, they went out of their way to make it memorable with a lovely dessert!! And upon leaving you are thanked for your support..... If you looking for a good Indian meal, please go to Little India in Musgrave!! Their Thalis are delicious, and curries are phenomenal

We were only in Durban one night, and it was important to us to have some of the delicious, authentic Indian food that the city is known for. We researched a number of different restaurants, and this one fit the bill in every category. The Rocket Masala Dosai with sambar, tomato, and coconut chutneys was fantastic, and the Broadbean Bunny Chow with a side of shredded carrot salad was equally so. All of the flavors were so incredibly authentic that it made my Indian food resonator go off! We sat on the balcony enjoying our beer and wine after the meal and loved the whole experience from start to finish.

If you are ever feeling under the weather, then I highly recommend trying their rassam. It is so good for when you have a cold / flu and want something to speed up the recovery. Also phone ahead and ask them about their parking area, so you don't have to park on the road.

I absolutely loved every part of this restaurant! The food was incredible, the service was friendly the restaurant itself is very well presented and definitely is family friendly! There is a very well equipped baby change room which makes this a very highly recommended spot in my opinion! The curry was really good and I will highly recommended The Little India to anyone! The only critique I did have was that the incense that they burn in the restaurant is a little bit strong for someone who is not used to the smell, I was however able to open up the windows on the balcony where we were sitting and this helped a lot. So still very highly recommended 🌻

The food was absolutely wonderful. The service was 5 star. As you can see the waitress was helping wash my hands. She was great. I highly recommend the Little India.

Cindy and Rui were excellent from booking to parking to advice on the meal choice to payment and escort to our car. An overall 5 star experience. Delicious!! Do choose them for an unforgettable experience without breaking the budget.

Very good food. We had the potato dosa with bharita, very good mains and when I was unsure of the vermicilli dessert, i was given a tester. Will most certainly go back.

This is a Durban gem situated in the heart of the Berea. The food, service and ambiance are outstanding and the prices very reasonable. The wine list is limited, but sufficient for the needs if you are not too pretentious.

The food was outstanding. The flavors are spot on and this place is a true gem. Good, authentic Indian cuisine. Will definitely go back!

Went to Little India on Musgrave for lunch. Beautiful set up. Food was absolutely divine from the starters to the mains. Wish I had room for desserts. I had the crab curry and my friend the lamb breyani. Both dishes prepared to perfection. The food we had here compared Malis are miles apart. Really feel that I wasted my money at Malis. Just added Little India to my list of favourite restaurants...keep it up guys!

Disclaimer on Review: Based upon a true story. The names were changed to protect the innocent and some events have been modified to create a dramatic restaurant review. Indiana Jones Kingdom of Little Indian on Musgrave Sitting in my room at Marshall College, I was looking for clues as to where I could find mouth-watering curries. Going through my notes, believing real rewards await those who choose wisely, I found what I was looking for. Legend has it; There was pleasurable Indian cuisine so good that when one’s eyes are bigger than one’s stomach, it doesn’t matter, because you are unable to stop eating! Marion and I took to the road soon thereafter... Using my digital compass to find the Kingdom of Little India. Getting a little bit lost, X really never, ever marks the spot and we drove around the kingdom at first. Our first encounter was with the temple guard. We assured him coins would be provided if he looked after my horseless carriage. Upon entering the empire, we saw a beautiful sunset over a waterfall. Walking up the path we were greeted by the gate keeper. He showed us to our table. I looked at Marion and she indicated that she would be ordering the Chardonnay from our friendly server, Chattar Lal. After ordering a list of Indian cuisine, I told Marion: “We ordered too much food”. Marion said: “MAN UP, Dr. Jones”. I could see in her eyes, she didn’t care.. She was prepared to be carried out. The starters arrived; The Paneer Pakoda fried golden & crisp on the outside and soft Paneer(cottage) cheese inside, was appetizing. The authentic thin and golden crispy Masala Dosa with mash inside, was highly pleasant especially with the trio of dips. Our Mains: Lamb Rogan Josh, was rich and spicy with tender, flavourful chunks of lamb. The Chettinad Prawn was flavourful, spicy and delicious with rice/Garlic Naan side. The lamb and Prawn cuisine was characteristically brilliant and we were pleased with the complex flavours of curries. The legend was real in the kingdom of Little India. We finished our dinner. Our eyes conquered our stomach. It was at a cost; our movements were limited. Fortune and glory: We had an elegant experience with delicate, flavourful food and outstanding service from our man, Chattar Lal(Gary). The Indian decorative style was also pleasing to look at and the food presentation and cutlery were beautiful.

I think it's a great restaurant and I can recommend people to go and enjoy authentic Indian food.

UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCE! I have travelled and eaten all over the world and have never experienced such delicious food cooked to perfection. Despite, the incredible food, my son from Cape Town was down and requested a rare indian dessert - which they obliged and prepared especially for him! Although it was a takeout order the food was packed neatly and attention to detail , we will certainly dine there after lockdown and wish Management the best. Warm regards, Mrs. Vijay Naidoo.

This restaurant serves delicious and flavorful Indian food at a reasonable price. The menu is extensive, with a wide variety to choose from. I really enjoyed my paneer tikka masala, which was tasty with a good amount of spice. My parents raved about their lamb korma. Service was friendly and efficient, and I will definitely be returning for my fix of authentic Indian curry.

Whenever we visit Durban, we must have a meal at Little India. The decor and cutlery is not my style. However, everything is clean and neat. AND, the food is always good. Our last visit in May 2019, we had the lamb tikka prepared in the tandoori oven and fish biryani...both were superb! What a satisfying meal.

My family and I had dinner on a Saturday. The service was good. Our food arrived in good time and everything was delicious. We ordered a variety of dishes and all shared. Food prices are slightly high and we were astonished to pay R15 for a teeny tiny bowl of sambal salad. Unfortately we could not have dessert as the restaurant was too cold and it was becoming very uncomfortable. But I will still return - for the food, ambiance and the clean and tidy washroom.

Went with my family and we tried various dishes. All were dishes were very good and delicious. Service was good but not excellent. Would definitely recommend this place and would go back again

Food not so great here today. We ordered Garlic Naan and were given a very dull Butter Naan. Poor customer service even after giving feedback that food is not to the usual standard. 👎🏾👎🏾. Poor!

Best dosa’s in Durban. Lots of variety on offer (Paneer is my personal Favorite:-) )Great place for families to get together. The masala tea is flavorful and comforting.

Had an early dinner as a party of 5. The restaurant was empty on a Thursday evening. We got greeted by the host and seated on the balcony. We had an elderly waiter who didn't know much about the dishes we wanted to order.

I ordered the Vegetarian Thali which lacked salt and did not give me any zest for appetite.

The Chicken Curry Bunny Chow was tasty, with a thick gravy and melting potatoes - just what a Bunny should have!

The Chicken Chilli was really bland and was a really small portion.

I was too unenthusiastic to take any photos.

When the bill arrived I was extremely startled to think that we had all eaten with much dissatisfaction however for such a high price.

Really overpriced for below average food.

Little India have consistently never disappointed, their food is awesome, i can remember going here even during my high school days. Our favourites are potato masala dosa and butter chicken. I would have given a higher rating if it were not for their wheelchair unfriendly entrance. No ramps or access for prams or wheelchair users, unless they are carried up stairs by the staff. Not acceptable by international standards.
Robyn Palmer
Excellent food and great service!
I had the best butter chicken and naan I’ve had in years! Also tried the vermicelli for dessert which was very good, not too sweet.
The restaurant has a warm atmosphere. Jaya is a lovely host and I’d go back any day!
Gabi
We ordered Rogan Josh, Sugar bean bunnies , tandoori chicken and paneer. We also had some plain naan on side. It was AWESOME!! Every curry tasted unique, flavoursome and absolutely delicious. Their hot is hot, more so than in Cape Town, so if ur used to Cape Curry be warned!! We had friendly service and the pricing is very reasonable. Will be back when in Dbn again!
Dorcas Mashudu Lekganyane
I'd give them 10 stars if it were possible. Absolutely amazing! Great stuff, quick service and a pleasant atmosphere. Oh my gosh - the food is out of this world. Best curry I've had in a while!!
Glenda Watt
Great service - very helpful and accomadating staff, and overall a lovely relaxing atmosphere (good for both lunch and dinner). Food was also very good and portion sizes were ample (very filling meals).
Shannon Correia
There's a big selection of food on offer. We had two mains that were lamb based- both were delicious! The service was quick, although our waiter was an elderly man and that lead to come barriers in communication. The dessert was delicious too! Worth a visit.

Really good food. Service excellent.
The idly Sambar was great. Highly recommended.
Good vegetarian selections. Had a fairly large group and all were not disappointed
Carin
Probably the friendliest and most helpful staff. We had a gobi starter (cauliflower in soy and pepper) which was very tasty and full of flavour. For mains we had sugar beans bunny. Also incredible and very filling. I will definitely be back.

I went to THE LITTLE INDIA RESTURANT ON MUSGRAVE on the 11 MARCH 2017
We were in a group of seven girls ,we were seated very quickly we all ordered our drinks which was served in less than two minutes .Then we ordered our meals which was: chicken kurma, chicken tikka masala, mutton bunny, lamb breyani, prawn kadai, chicken kadai which we all had butter Naan served with meals the taste was mind blowing .Then we decided to order puddings which was : chocolate ice-cream with chocolate sauce, cashew nut ice-cream, gulab jamun, sooji, vermicelli pudding, little india signature (mango and peach in a caramelized sauce). Then to end our lovely experience we ordered 3 masala coffee's and the other girls ordered fruit juices. I am truly impressed everytime I come to this restaurant

THE PRAWN CURRY SERVED WITH GARLIC NAAN - AMAZING. If I was rating Little India on food alone it would have been a 5. The let down was the decor and our hostile waitress. Also, my sister who is a regular at the restaurant says it took longer than usual for the food to arrive at the table but it was well worth the wait.

Love the food and the restaurant. I had my 30th birthday there. I drive all the way from kloof for their butter paneer and garlic naan! Also love the butter chicken! Delicious!

Decent interiors..the food was also not the greatest.
Being in durban, our expectations for good indian food were very high. However this place didnt live upto the mark.

Overall the taste of the food was average.

Great service, food was fast, authentic Chefs. Waiter was happy to provide suggestions on something new to eat. Menu has loads of choices. We tried the Lamb Madras and Manchurian Prawn (Indo-Chinese) & Kulfi dessert. Must have veg rice!
Sindhura Gangireddy
Completely unhappy with the experience. We went for an early dinner at 6pm and got the food at 8pm. Had to wait 2 HRS!!! The manager was a sweet guy, who tried his best to pacify the annoyed customers. The owner, also incharge of the kitchen was a very rude person. In the end, the food was just OK. The chicken was rubbery. I wouldnt go there if they gave food for free.
MJ
Really authentic Indian flavours! 8 piece chicken tikke meal was so moist. Butter chicken and lamb roganjosh and korma was succulent. Friendly service!

While am in Durban may as well review previous visits.
Have been here a few times and has to be one of the best Indian restaurants I have eaten at.
Service is excellent
Naan breads are delicious.
We normally share a few curries to get all the flavours going ! Highly recommended !!!

It is quite a mission getting up the stairs but this is a wonderful indian restaurant. It is quite unnoticeable from the road but this restaurant is one of the best Indian restaurants in Durban. The place doesn't really have a vibe which is a small price to pay for a good meal. That said, the meals are excellent, a reminiscence of North India with the decor topping it off. The Little India offers excellent food, a must for foodies!

Very professionally run restaurant in the heart of Musgrave. Food is great and good value. Been there a few times and the experience has been consistently good. Authentic Indian cuisine, great flavours with great service. Recommended if you are in Dbn.
Anisa Hoosen
Excellent Indian dining experience from delectable food and efficient service, to tasteful decor and ambience created for a wedding party of approximately 60guests. Can accommodate more patrons if required on enquiry. Definitely worth a try for casual dining or even a special occasion of note. Highly recommended.
Skulland Protea
Great food. Spicy and delicious. The butter chicken masala is a winner. Try some white sauvignon blanc with the food. The nan is also very good.

Indian food prepared for the individual taste. Old India charm in the restaurant, delicious food, have never walked away unhappy. Peach and mango dessert is their signature.

Horrible experience, they ruined our day...

While reviews say its nice, it was not for us. We placed order to someone and that guy didnt brief our server properly. The order was incorrect multiple times, also the taste was not good. On top of all this our server was exceptionally rude. She was not responding properly and she spoke in such high pitch it made me furious.

I will never step in this restaurant again and would recommend no one ever to eat there because not just they serve bad food they also serve bad mood...

What an experience! Friendly staff and amazing food. The presentation was awesome and we were assisted in selecting our food. I will be returning soon

This is one of those places that you could walk into being full, have one look at the menu, and feel like u havent eaten in days. If you're into indian food you will definitely love this place. Their mouth watering menu is backed up by delicious meals sure to sure to satisfy your spicy craving. I went with a large group of people and since meals are served in bowls and not on your plate we cud each have a little from each other, wasn't disappointed with anything I've tasted.
