Typical Maderieran Portuguese food made by mamma who is the chef. Lovely setting and people.
Delicious cuisine to be had here. Ive never been to Portugal yet, but tbh when I do go there I am going to be disappointed if the food their doesn’t taste as good as the dishes I’ve had here. The flavors were all so unique and well constructed, some spicy and some not so spicy but still delicious. This restaurant has defined for me what Portuguese food should taste like has become my benchmark. Im anxious to go back, try some of the same and some other dishes too. Well done 1920. Note the flan is excellent too, try it.
Generally a good place.
Had prawns and a peppermint something (forgot if it was a mousse or something else) for dessert. The dessert was woow. The main was good, nothing outstanding.
Got a bit noisy for my comfort.
I could try the place again and see if i get a different experience.
I will definitely go again! Everything we picked from the menu was good! Only downside is that they are so popular that you have to book.
Same great food in a much nicer Dunkeld venue. Highly recommended! And still superb today in 2023!
This was a new discovery for me. It is a hidden gem. The food was absolutely magnificent. The service was great with friendly staff that leave you to enjoy your lunch without asking if everything is in order every 5 minutes. Even though the restaurant was full it didn't feel crowded and I enjoyed a relaxing lunch with close friends. I will definately be taking my family there for lunch or supper, very soon!
I recently had the pleasure of dining at 1920 Portuguese Restaurant, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations. The highlight of my meal was undoubtedly their Chicken Prego. Cooked to perfection, the chicken was tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. It was served on a toasted bun and topped with a delectable sauce that added an extra layer of deliciousness. The portion size was generous, ensuring that every bite was satisfying. The potatoes were also delicious. The overall dining experience at 1920 was delightful, with attentive and friendly staff, a cozy ambiance, and reasonable prices. If you visit this restaurant, do not miss out on the Chicken Prego – it truly is amazing.

Had a fantastic positive experience at this brand new restaurant in Hutton Court on Jan Smuts in Hydepark. Authentic Portuguese cooking and a menu offering you a wide variety of tasty dishes. Service was good and the owner gave us personal attention and explained the specials and some of the other dishes on the menu. Spending time there with friends, drinking Vino Verde in an atmosphere reminding one very much of an upmarket restaurant in Lisbon, was a good fun. We enjoyed the terrace area being even more informal than inside. We will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes. The restaurant is unfortunately not yet showing on Google Maps and they do have problems with their phone lines. Remember to book in advance for they are quite popular. Go and find out for yourself.
We were invited by friends to this restaurant and it was an amazing experience. Portuguese cuisine, portuguese flavors and scents... I went for the traditional "Caldeirada de Peixe" (Fish Stew), It was delicious... and my friend managed to ask for an extra: 3 prawns on it... my wife, my sister in law and my friend's wife they went for the Prawn Curry, it looked very good. My brother in law had the classic "Bife à Portuguesa" (Steak a la Portuguese).
All dishes were prepared while we waited. The service is very good, very good personell, very professional and friendly. One of them actually, from Mozambique, approached the table to say Hi in Portuguese. The Menu is vast and hard to choose... all dishes are desirable... without forgetting the deserts... I had "Arrôs Dôce" (Rice Pudding) a portuguese delicacy. Good portuguese wines, vast choice between prices and quality... The restaurant was crowded/full. I suggest a reservation before you try it. If you like Portuguese food, here you will be home. We loved it, we will go back... Well done.
Friendly service, tasty food and excellent dessert. The mild peri-peri sauce is a bit of a non event, so probably better to get the hot version. Caldeirada was absolutely perfect. Will be back!
Best Portuguese food in Joburg. Manny runs a fantastic restaurant with consistent high standard and high quality. Highly recommended for fresh fish, delicious steak and chicken dishes
Quaint setting with welcoming and inclusive ambience.
Some droning noise issues in upper part of restaurant, however lower area is easier for conversation.
Starters were amazing while mains - espetadas, chicken and steaks were delicious.
Prawns left me wanting as they were quite average.
Nice for casual dinners with date or with friends.
Pricing is inexpensive and service is pleasant and friendly.
Plenty parking and centrally located.
Booking in advance is highly recommended.
The restaurant was very busy, but service was still good. Clam and potato dish was tasty, so was the pasta dish. Nice range of desserts too. A great Portuguese place with a wide variety of dishes for all.
Visited for 199 prawn special. Was fantastic value 10 large prawns .we both decided we would definitely go on a Tuesday again for special . It’s the whole day on Tuesday . Visited first week in July 2023
Cozy environment
Delicious food
Lovely service
Lovely family setup
This is genuinely the single best restaurant in JHB. The food is absolutely incredible. I am not just saying this. I could not recommend eating more. Amazing staff and good location. But the food here is in a league of its own. If I could I would eat here every single day. Well done 1920 family!
What a great place for food that tastes SO wholesome. I had the Portuguese chicken and prawns. It was amazing. This restaurant needs at least a week early booking, but completely worth it!
We’ve been turned away before when the restaurant was fully booked. Today we took our chance walking in. Food was really good from the starter to mains. I had the picanha and the portion was huge. I would prefer regular fried chips instead of the thin potato chips. Service was also good up until the point where the restaurant became full and it was a challenge to get attention.
