Review Artist's Cafe - Clarens

Absolutely loved the place! The food was great we had the best lunch, took a piece of cake home and had very good breakfast the day after. They have a lot of choice on the menu and everything we had was absolutely delicious.

Our breakfast was absolutely devine!! Best cappuccino in Clarens by far! A must visit in Clarens!

Excellent food, good value meals that don't compromise on quality. One of the best burgers you can have. Even the vegetarian quiche was mouth watering. The accompanying salad was a full meal on its own. The service by Patric was superb. Very novel way to bring you the bill in Old cigarette tins. Also on the wall an advert painted on tin that has a reference to the old South Africa which could belong in the Apartheid museum. Unfortunately, not user friendly if you get caught in torrential rain, unless you manage to go inside quickly.

This place is always busy! Good service, good food, good cappucino and pet friendly 👌

Visited with a friend and our children, what a lovely experience. Waiters were attentive and made good recommendations. Both my Chicken salad and my friend’s Hangry Burger was really good. Loved the kids playing outside.

Loved our lunch at Artist's Cafe. Ordered the Ploughman's and it superceded our expectations. Great value for money.

Rustic, themed restaurant with a very interesting menu. Menu does contain the typical staples but it has quite a few interesting and novel items to choose from. Portions are big and food quality is good. Waiters and staff are attentive and eager to help. Inside is cost and comfortable for a cold winters day.

We arrived 15:22 after hiking the entire day... Were surprised when the friendly staff allowed us to order even though the kitchen closed at 16:00. Food was fresh and salad dressing was delicious. Great sitting in the winter sun with a cute play area for kids. Also good value for money.

The place is so lovely and warm. The staff is very awesome and the service was great. The food was very delicious. I grabbed my lunch there. I hand their ribs, they fell of the bone. They even have a little play area for the kids outside. I would definitely recomend this place.

Great place for breakfast and lunch! Delicious food and an awesome place to take your kids. The playground keeps them busy for hours so that you can enjoy your meal without rushing!

We had dogs with us, and the staff was friendly towards our dogs. The food was delicious and quick. I would highly recommend their Roosterkoek!

Clarens is a wonderful place for a Saturday morning slap-up breakfast. It’s clear that this is where the region hangs out. And the best way to tell. Whether the breakfast is good. Is by the number of families at the tables.
Simon
Nice café in the middle of town, with lovely pressed juices and well cooked breakfasts. All cooked fresh so be prepared to wait 25 mins.

Excellent service. Great milkshakes. Delicious food and serious value for money.

Best food and service we have experienced in Clarens by far. Been to numerous restaurants and we will definately be back to Artists Cafe.

Clarens - Artist's Cafe .... when we visit Clarens, I just want their roosterkoeke!!! These roosterkoeke are just AMAZING!!!!! Served with a whole little glass container of strawberry jam, grated cheese. Pure heaven! Hein ordered boerewors with pap and eggs. Yum. Lovely Americano served in these mugs (you can buy them for R40) served on an ivy leaf. Hein Pretorius said it must be Adam's pants he left behind.

Was a really wonderful place to eat. Friendly and fast service especially considering it was so busy. Food was really good. Would definitely recommend this place.

Had an awesome meal with my family. They have fantastic friendly staff. I will recommend this to anybody.

Had fantastic chocolate cake and coffee. Came back for coffee again! Lost a very sentimental expensive necklace but was picked up by staff and handed in. Thank you so much to management and staff. Not often that we come across such honesty. We will most definitely be back.

It's our umpteenth time back at Clarens. A jewel on it's own. And we visit the Artist's Cafe every time. Nice food and drinks. Friendly staff.

Our lunch was very good and service was excellent. Our waiter was helpful in telling us where to visit in our local area

Lekker om net rustig te wees. En intresante winkels. Geniet die tyd saam met Dianna, my suster, dogter en kleinkinders, Bernt en Amoré

Really enjoyed the roaster kook. Found the waiters to be very friendly and polite.
Francois Du Toit
Very average for the price. Sloppy presentation. Slow service. There’s so much better to choose from in Clarens.
Thomas Kemp Wakeford
Good cofy. Breakfast was devine. Friendly waiter. Highly recomended.
Jaco Meintjes
I enjoyed the Boere Breakfast (just the way I imagined it would be) and a nice Cappuccino with cream. Service was nice and quick even though they were quite busy.

Food was good, staff very friendly and attentive would recommend for families as the play area is great. Nice place for a light lunch had the chicken schnitzel which was delicious

Nice sunday morning outing, with the family. Service recomodation, not at all. All the waiters arrogant, and they dont want to work. Food after all not to bad, but for a place in centre of teh free state attracting lots of visitors , they can do much better.

We were looking for a Sunday breakfast and were drawn by the buzz and good view offered by the Artist’s Cafe. The restaurant is centrally located, has some unique menu options as well as the trusted old favorites. Our meals were tasty and the service, friendly. Our toddler enjoyed the old tractor and slide. All round good experience.

We were looking forward to a nice breakfast, but unfortunately it was not meant to be.
The eggs was over done for easy over. The breakfast just looked a bit miserable on the plate.
The white hot chocolate was very nice.
Not exactly what we had in mind for a Birthday breakfast.
Staff was not very helpful.
Marc Schmidt
When visiting a restaurant (a special experience) to me, it doesn’t matter how pleasant the setting is, how friendly the staff are or how much effort has gone into the decor, if the food is miserable then the entire experience is miserable!!

I actually don’t know what to say

, so perhaps its better I say nothing before I regret it. The picture of my “easy over” eggs says it all !!!
They promised to bring me a replacement to correct these crispy burnt eggs!!! I’m still waiting for it to arrive!!!!

My daughter accidentally spilt some milkshake onto the floor under the table. We apologised to two staff and asked if they could get it cleaned. NOTHING was done during our entire meal.

Worst of all is that they ruined my daughter’s “Birthday in the Mountains” breakfast!!!!!

We stopped there a few times before for breakfast. Good breakfast, some served with mieliepap and Sheba, good old South African breakfasts
Good coffee!
Also the roosterkoek with a filling, and the pancakes are very nice
Kids can enjoy the old tractor and playarea
Definitely worth going!!

We had lunch at The Artist Cafe.
We had excellent service, super friendly and fast.
We chose to be seated in a quiet private area and enjoyed all the arty things standing around.

We had lattes which was very delicious. Our salads could have been plated with a bit more imagination but it was tasty and the choice of salad dressings was numerous.

Overall a pleasant experience.

My husband and I decided to give The Artists' Cafe a shot on Saturday morning, around 10:45 and it was a disappointing experience from start to finish.

We had to wander around trying to find someone to seat us, and when we eventually got seated at a table, we proceeded to wait 10+ minutes for a waiter to even acknowledge us. We then had to wait an additional 15 minutes for our drinks and the Americano was possibly the worst iteration of my favourite coffee that I've ever had.

I'm not entirely sure who our waiter was because the person who seated us, gave us menus, took our drinks order and eventually brought our drinks out were completely different people. After having to flag down a server for our food order (this was around 11:15), a very rude waiter, as uninterested as can be, scoffed when I asked about the selection of cakes.

Once I placed my order, my husband then attempted to order a burger (since there was nothing remotely appealing on the breakfast menu and it states that lunch is served from 11:30), the waiter rolled his eyes and informed us that they're not taking orders for lunch yet. Interesting - how can one only order from the lunch menu from 11:30, but even before we'd arrived (we spent some time walking around the Square) there were four tables that were already drunk and rowdy with big glasses of beer in front of them? Since the service is so slow, I'm sure we'd only have received the burger at 11:45 or later anyway.

We then placed an order for a slice of marshmallow cake and a slice of carrot cake. The marshmallow cake was mediocre, while the carrot cake was an atrocity. It was rock-hard and seemingly old. We then had to pay our bill inside since it was unlikely that we'd have been able to catch a waiter again.

Thoroughly disappointing. Would definitely not recommend.

Delightful place for a big brunch. I really enjoyed the food served. I had asparagus and eggs. Biggest asparagus I’ve ever seen. Really yummy. Thanks

Whenever I come to Clarens, this is a MUST. We had breakfast there yesterday morning (14 October 2017). It was fabulous.
Tasty, fast & cozy!
The blankets outside add such a cozy atmosphere.
Lesley
Artist cafe consistently good every year - Great food , good portions, value for money and friendly service. Will be back again next year. One of best places to eat in Clarens .
Wihan Van Der Bank
Loved the food and atmosphere. Friendly staff and delicious farm style breakfast. Clarens has a lot of different restaurants within walking distance of each other and with stiff competition I would recommend the Artists Cafe to anyone.
Carice De Jager
Had a very pleasant breakfast here. The omelet was full of flavour and filling. The coffee was very good quality. The portion sizes are also generous. What you see is what you get!
Mario Jv Resnburg
Good location right by the town square.
Service and food reasonable to food . Nice indoor and outdoor seating with a fireplace inside for colder days.
Noluthando Lushozi
I absolutely loved having breakfast here. We ended up going 2 mornings in a row, I had a veg omelette 😍 We also had the same waiter & he was so sweet 😀 Food took a while to come out, I think because they get so busy but honestly worth the wait.
Björn Luciano Salsone
Yum and totally awesome! From the vibe, scenery, food, flexibility and overall experience. Thank you and well done! I'll be back for sure. Totally recommend inside or out. #welldone

Went for breakfast on a chilly weekday morning. The staff is very friendly and professional. Had toasted sandwiches, was yummy. Also enjoyed the atmosphere, warm and cozy.
Bianca
This is a cosy little spot. Although I only had cake here the waiters were quick and friendly. I had two (generous) slices of cake - baked cheese cake and lemon meringue... Yum!

We waited over an hour for our breakfast , when we politely questioned the manager she very rudely told us to pretty much deal with it. When the breakfast eventually arrived the eggs for overcooked, the mushrooms were canned mushrooms. Absolutely horrible
Jonathan De Magalhaes
Don't waste your money here.

Very disappointing quality of food, with poor service. There are lots of other places to eat in Clarens. Don't be fooled because of the central location - this is a below average restaurant.
Laura Brewer
The service here was great but coming from Joburg we expected something a bit more exciting when it came to the menu. We don't eat meat and struggled to find enough options on their menu so ended up going with two spinach and feta options only to be told that they had no spinach. They happily replaced the spinach with mushrooms but then proceeded to cover both dishes (pancake and baked butternut) with mounds of melted cheese which looked very unappealing. Would perhaps try a salad next time but only out of the need to find a meal without meat in a small town.

Out of this world! Quirky decor ... 2 books stacked on each table, topped with a tin cup & saucer filled with sugars, decorated with pearly beads.

Service was excellent and I ordered the 'moerkoffie' and rusks. It came in a pot with coffee bags and the saucers have ivy leaves on. So cute. Rusks were lovely, unfortunately I'm not a fan of chicory in coffee bags, so I swopped with Hein.

Hein had the Boerie breakfast ... a big portion of stywe pap topped with tomato relish with boerewors, bacon, eggs, grated cheese and toast on the side. He loved it.

I ordered the 'roosterkoek' (griddle cakes) with jam and cheese. OH MY GOODNESS! Don't order anything else!!! It was crispy on the outside and soooooo yummy!!!! 2 of them and I nearly had them both, but I couldn't ... it was absolutely smashing.

We had lunch at this place and it was very disappointing. First of all we had to wait for almost half an hour and than the food was of poor quality. The fish and chips were tasteless, fish came out of the freezer and was watery. The lamb stew was full of bone and not warm.
Not a place to return to.

Place is nicely situated in town. Had a Cafe Mocha which I enjoyed. The French Connection (French toast) was not value for money. For R60 you get the below (see picture attached). Waiter was friendly.
John Strydom
Very good service and friendly staff. Food was excellent and service was fast. Best family restaurant in Clarens by far. Try the Roosterkoek, Artist Cafe Burger or Curry and as a coffee snob the coffee is very good.
Jaco
Horrible service, had to call waiter 4 times to order food, drinks took forever. Waited 30min to be told they are out of stock!!! plenty of other places in Clarens to visit this is definitely not one of them
Noni Demetriou
Nice local breakfast spot. Had the roostekoek with jam and cheese which was nice. All meals seemed ok. Service was a bit slow but they were very busy.
Andre Venter
Atmosphere is pleasant and warm, kids have place to play and you can keep an eye on them. Food was nothing special though. The Artist's Burger was good but the rest was rather plain.
Yentl Frederick
If you're looking for a nice breakfast and you're not in a hurry, this is the place to go, as the service is quite slow. The only thing really that stands out is the atmosphere, which is full of hustle and bustle, and does get you in the mood to go sightseeing.
Dt
Nice, vibey place, where one can do nice breakfasts!

They have favourites like 'Kamp Koffie' (coffee with condensed milk), Moerkoffie (traditional boere koffie), and other nice warm drinks!

The food is good!

You can even take home a 'artist cafe' mug for R30! Nice!

Worth a visit!

Beautiful Lil spot in the centre of town . Great for families. Lovely variety of food - great halomi that was not rubbery . Service good would definitely go back .
Roslyn Hellström
Greatly positioned. The service is good. The cakes are good value for money and large. The lemon meringue base has a lovely tangy lemon biscuit base. The filling is well balanced however the meringue itself lacked crispness and tasted like egg white. The peppermint tart was rich and creamy.

Artists Cafe is ideally located smack bang in the centre of town. The restaurant gets quite busy, especially over weekends but there is ample space to accommodate all the traffic and one has the option of sitting inside or outside.. The menu is extensive and dishes are fairly priced. The cafe has a rustic, vintage ambiance which matches the old school charm of Clarens. I would recommend going there for breakfast or if you're travelling in a group.
Justin Griesel
We came across Artists Cafe walking up the main road. It is situated on the bottom of the town square. We were greeted by the owner who was very friendly. I had the savoury pan cake which was delicious and reminded me of when I was a kid. The ambiance and decor is great and their is a fireplace so it must be quite cosy in the winter.
