Great clams and calamari 👍👍😊
Saturday night, with live music, the eating experience comes alive. With scenic views of the mountains , the food is seconday but not last. Loved the chicken and vegetarian options . Value for money and great portions .... book in advance
Good food good entertainment it's definitely my no 1 in Clarens! It's the second time I had steak and it's soooo good and the best mash I had! Keep up the good work!
Really good vibe, food and service. The steak literally melted in my mouth and the service was excellent. Live music adds to the ambiance of the place and even though we didn’t make a reservation they managed to get us a table
Awesome food, the set up was awesome. Gosto allowed us to have a surprise dinner and set up a few decorations. They even went an extra mile. And we wouldn't have had this wonderful night if it weren't for the friendly waiters, the chefs and the gentleman exposing us to live music.
Nice setting in Clarens this is a very popular restaurant and you do need to book during busy times. It is the first Portuguese restaurant I have been to that doesn’t have a Portuguese salad, only a Greek salad! The per peri chicken was extremely hot! The olives in the salad tasted like they were from a tin and were cheap. There is live music.
Very good food and excellent service. Had the beer prawns and they were super delicious. Make a reservation for Friday night as they get rather busy.
Best atmosphere in Clarens and the food also good. Nice and cosy on a cold Friday evening. Live entertainment was excellent. Will definitely visit again
one of the best Portuguese restaurants I've been to and possibly the best restaurant in Clarens. A fantastically flavoured peri-peri chicken and the uniquely spicy prawns were nothing short of incredible. Pair these meals with a local Clarens brew and it's near perfect. The restaurant (as quiet as it was) was let down by the wait. An hour (al though worth it) was too long to wait, especially considering there was only one other couple at the restaurant. Great food, a must visit. #Clarens #Gusto #Portugese #periperi
The chicken livers starter was excellent. The peri-peri chicken was very tasty rich in Portuguese flavors. The beef espetada was succulent, cooked to perfection. The vibe was amazing with live music in the background and the service was notably on point.
Wonderful restaurant, been for both lunch and dinner - each time we had a great meal. Fresh good quality food, large portions sizes. Friendly service, warm and cozy place to eat.
Food is delish and has a great atmosphere! Will definitely return the next time I am this side of the world! Had the chicken and it was great!
We went for our anniversary dinner and they made it very special! Glass of champagne on arrival 🍾. Great live performance, very romantic setting and friendly staff. We had clams for starters which weren't great at all (more shell than clam, sauce underwhelmed). I had delicious kingklip for main, hubby had "to die for" prawns. Value for money, great fine dining in beautiful quaint town!
Fantastic service from the staff and manager on duty. The prawns, veggie platter and pork chops were out of this world. Great ambience and seating not on top of each other. Magic evening at Gosto’s.
We recently celebrated an 80th birthday at Gosto, which is centrally located and offers a lovely cozy atmosphere. The friendly staff ensured a wonderful fun-filled evening and the food was simply scrumptious. The prawns, veggie platter and pork chops are definitely worth a try.
Saw a couple of negative reviews here and I need to say.... Don't let that affect your decision. The staff here is so friendly and accommodating. The restaurant itself has a comfortable, cozy feel and the food is really amazing! Try the Espatada, it's absolutely delicious.
Nice vibe good music food was really tasty and good value for money. Made me feel welcome and moved me to be closer to the fire as I was on my own.
Very pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere. Real feel for Portugal. Food was very tasteful and well prepared. Out of the ordinary. Slight wait for the food.
This meal surpassed our expectations by far! I would drive from Johannesburg to Clarens just for the amazing food! Great service! Exceptional food! no complaints! Our taste buds are happy!
Went there yesterday for some Sangria and something to nibble on. The sangria was dissapointing as it was way too sweet. It should be made with dry red wine. It tasted a bit like "aan maak koeldrank". My boyfriend and I shared a starter platter which was lovely! The calamari was my favourite and the steak pieces in sauce was delicious! Portuguese sausage was yum and the peri peri chicken livers also good. Will definitely go back for the food.
We are in Clarens for a spontaneous weekend away and our first mission was finding somewhere to go for dinner.. obviously taking a locals recommendation and ended up at Gosto's.
We were greeted by a lovely hostess who gave us a table and then by our waiter.
First point of interest -ordering some wine. After reading through the list, we asked our waiter for a recommendation and he sadly couldn't give us one. Atleast he was honest in saying he didnt know, we could have well ended up with something crap. We decided on a bottle of the Alchemy Blend. Yum !!
Onto food.
We ordered the King Prawns and then Gosto special, a skewer with rump, prawn and chicken.
My prawns were very very good !!! It came with rice and a small salad.
The Gosto special was also devine, the meat was soooo soft, the chicken succulent and the prawns equally as good.
My only crit would be; some of my prawns had a bit too much peri peri sauce and it was a bit much at times.
Dessert was the affogato, espressos and grappa of course !! Loved the dessert - nice grunchy nut pieces. The espresso was a bit over extracted which made it bitter - pity because everything else was good.
Service was a bit slow. We saw the hostess more than our waiter. But we didnt reeeeally mind too much as the ambiance was great. Warm, homey, friendly and they had an incredible violinist playing softly in the corner setting the mood - he was amazing I must add.
Overall a great evening.
Thank you Gosto's 😊
It is Xmas eve, 24 December 2016. We are staying in Ash River Lodge B&B in Clarens ... and we didn't book for dinner.
Walking around Clarens the afternoon of the 24th, I spot a notice at Gosto ... live music. I promptly walked in and luckily they still had a table for us ... dinner was sorted.
Decor is warm and inviting and a 'glass hut' with Santa in it, had 'snowflakes' falling continuously ... so sweet. The live music was a guy who really had a good voice and knew which songs fit his voice. He also didn't screech and it was just perfect!!!
Earlier I saw Pasteis de Nata (custard tarts) at the door, so I started my evening with a Pasteis de Nata and black coffee. What a way to start!
Steamed asparagus with butter and a calamari starter ... asparagus was amazing. Calamari was sooo soft and tender, except it was a bit 'white' ... they could have just flashed it on a griddle.
A whole peri-peri chicken was ordered for our main. With chips and salad. Sauce was not too hot, chicken was fantastic and service throughout was impeccable.
For dessert I ordered the Ice Cream Surprise, but wasn't impressed ... the ice cream was a bit 'icy' and not sure what the surprise was. Hein had malva pudding with custard and it was good.
What a perfect way to spend Xmas eve!
Food - no frills, great quality Portuguese at decent prices.
I selected three starters on my first visit:
Fig in phyllo pastry.
Beef Trinchado
Flamed Chorizo
All were excellent, but from the starters, the clear winner in taste (despite presentation) was the trinchado. DELICIOUS!
For mains, I opted for the Frango Na Pucana (spicy chicken casserole) which was superb! The chicken casserole was delicious, with lots of flavour - the perfect winter main.
Live music - Excellent violinist with a penchant for a few other unusual instruments kept up a fabulous vibe.
Service - Themba, our charming waiter never missed a beat.
I must be honest in that the only let down in this humble little spot was the interiors. I felt like I was sitting in a barn but behind the bar is where the look of the place kind of lets the side down. It feels like a backdrop of an Italian/French/Portuguese bistro with too much going on. If they can simplify their look and create a no-frills 'Parreinhia' here, I will be back again and again.
*Recommendation: A really festive spot to eat at for a Friday night and an enjoyable meal at decent prices.

Had a nice meal here. They make an effort with gas heaters to keep the place warm. We got a voucher from our B and B for the local house wine (don't recommend it rather pay for something nicer). Excellent live music entertainment.
Very nice evening. Being a Monday it was quiet but the waiters were great. The prego roll was amazing. Calamari could do with being flavoured and seasoned correctly.
You can never rate a Clarens restaurant based on service or speed of service (in my experience). Therefore my rating is purely based on food and setting. Lovely setting. Amazing food. My clam starter was a large portion and very tasty. My husband's chorizo was delicious and nicely presented. His crackling lamb chops were one of the best meals he has ever had - crispy crackling and succulent pork with amazing basting. My chefs salad was divine with a generous helping of bacon (that almost tasted like crackling) and avo accompanied by a tasty dressing. Highly recommended!
We chose Gosto as our final lunch spot in Clarens. The service was very slow to start but got better as the day went on. It's a very relaxed spot and could probably do with a few fans as it got very hot.
We ordered a few different meals, the clams were lovely and not too rich, the livers were also good and the cheese platter was outstanding. It had a great variety and is definitely a special they should keep!
We arrived in town today for the first time. Naturally searching Zomato for our first dinner date.
Decided to try Gosto from the good reviews...it truly was excellent!
We were greeted by the manageress on arrival & seated with constant interaction the entire evening. (She is not somebody that hides in the back & lets her waiters do as they please!) The service, cleanliness, venue, atmosphere as well as starters, mains & deserts were all exceptional & highly recommended!
Our table tried the giblets & livers to start with. Our mains chosen were the Gosto Special (skewer combo of beef, prawns & chicken); Hake; Beef Trinchado; Rib Eye steak. We finished off with Dom Pedros only but the desert menu looked great for those who still have space!
Must visit Gosto when in town!
What a surprise, in a small town to discover a great Portugese restaurant,,.. Great service, Lucky is the man!, the atmosphere is great, the food is worth coming back.. Some of the best prawns ever! Decor, service, food all excellent! Well done!
Great food and fantastic service! Some of the best prawns in a while, and one of the best chickens ever. What an awesome spot! Great food, great service and brilliant ambiance. Absolutely fantastic!
Portuguese Food!! The most amazing evening with the most amazing staff! We had a reservation over the September-Longweekend and even though the restaurant was packed, we received amazing service and the staff was so friendly. The food was served no longer than 20minutes after our order was placed and it was fantastic! We had the perfect steak. We decided to eat at this restaurant every time we pass through Clarens! Go spoil yourself - go to Gosto!
The perfect prawn and chicken combo in Clarens! This Portuguese restaurant is filled with flavour and spunk. Very busy during the weekend evenings so definitely book! For the spice lovers, this is a great stop.
We chose to have dinner at Gosto based on the back of existing reviews and were not disappointed. It was fully booked (generally a good sign) and we both ordered the Mozambican prawns. The prawns were of a generous size and quite possibly the best cooked prawns ever - succulent, juicy and loaded with garlic. Gosto's also served the local Mozambican beer 2M which made for a perfect pairing with the prawns. For dessert we ordered the berry meringue, which was tasty but perhaps a little short on the (homemade) meringue; and the peanut chocolate fondant. Service was however slow, the only thing stopping me rating Gosto's at 4.5 out of 5. Definitely recommended.
For a sit down restaurant gosto was probably the best we visited while in Clarence. I was genuinely impressed overall and with the amount of locals on the joint it's a great credible sign of a quality restaurant.
Like any good Portuguese restaurant they have their own brand of peri-peri, so I had the chicken covered in their secret sauce. It was a little hot to be honest but the flavour was really great. My girlfriend and family had the pork chop which was also pretty fantastic. However I felt like they really helped in differentiating themselves with the dessert. I thought the homemade malva pudding was smashing. The service was also really good with our waiter doing a great job of looking after us. The only slightly down side was the look of the restaurant, it may be my personal feel but it felt more like a completely open room (with attached kitchen) rather than a thought out restaurant setup.
Would recommend to anyone going through to Clarence, but do remember to book. They do get quite full!
With a fire and some serious peri-peri dishes, Gosto was a warm retreat from a cold Clarens winter. I tried some of my boyfriend's peri-peri chicken which, even as a big fan of spicy food, I still found to be very hot - but not in a way that overpowered the taste. I had the crackling pork which was cooked to perfection and I would recommend the caramel and mint crunch for dessert if you have a sweet tooth. Compared to some other spots we tried in Clarens, the staff were quite attentive. Gosto makes a nice change from the usual pub and cafe style restaurants around town and I would definitely recommend it as a dinner spot.
