Review Gourmet India - Claremont

Naz Alexander
Cnr Dreyer and Warwick Str,(cavendish square) Claremont. Whenever I feel like really great prawn curry then we will drive all the way to Gourmet India. My husband always buys their lamb curry with butter naan. Delicious every time!!
Lorraine Kleyn
We always buy the Chicken Madras. Very delicious curry! Like always, very good friendly service from the cashier to the kitchen guy. Thank you for the good service. You will see us soon again
Prashant Ramlakan
The only Indian restaurant in Cavendish offering tasty and very economical authentic Indian dishes made with love. You will not be disappointed
Yusuf Amod
Nice Indian restaurant in a good mall. Service was friendly and efficient and all the dishes bought were up to standard. Recommend the butter chicken, chicken tikka Marsala and chicken boti.
Imraan Adam
Love the roti rolls. Curry is tasty and portion size is decent. My only complaint is the spice level. The mild is too mild while the medium is too spicy.
Inathi Ndyalvan
I don’t often leave reviews but the food is 10/10! I may have found my new favourite food spot. I was nervous about trying out a new food spot but I’m so glad I did. AMAZING!
Janet Cunningham
The food was so tasty and the portions were a decent size. I would definitely recommend this place!
Raeez Manuel
Love the tandoori chicken with naan... Even kept wrapped in foil so that it retains its heat longer

This is my favourite Indian food takeaway in Cape Town. The food is deliciously spiced with ample of flavour and enough heat for those of us who like it hot. The panjabi samoosas are not to be missed and come with a delicious dip. The chicken tikka is authentic and the portion size is fantastic. I'd also highly recommend the lamb korma and lamb kadhai. Fantastic value for money.

One of the best Indian food place in the southern suburbs. Their chicken biriyani is one of the best I've ever had. It never disappoints. The butter chicken curry is also almost always perfect. Overall, good value for money.

We always enjoy the delicious Indian food prepared at this restaurant. My husband had their Tikka chicken and I enjoyed their vegetable samoosas. Both dishes were very tasty and delicious and well priced! In this day and age when eating out is an expensive venture, Gourmet India still provides cost effective dining to suit everyone's pocket and no loss of quality or flavours. Try their meals you won't be disappointed!

The food is good and value for money. Food tastes like a home meal. This is my go-too place when I cannot cook. The price is acceptable Ambiance: you sit in a food court so eating with hands is a bit awkward. If I can offer advice, bring along wet wipes and its not always easy to eat Indian food with Cutlery
Wendy Mbili
I’m disappointed in the butter chicken. It’s soupy. I don’t think it’s worth the price considering that there are other spots that make better butter chicken for lower prices. I was just desperate for Indian food.

The staff let this establishment down. The cashier is extremely unfriendly, they get your order wrong often and the quality of the curries have deteriorated to watery mush with not more than 6 little pieces of meat. They also doctor the time on their receipts, they’ve set them to 10 mins behind the actual time. You will actually feel ill after eating here because the staff are so untidy and a glance into their kitchen will take you over the edge. Never again.

When my cousin and I usually sit down and eat by the food court, we have no issues at all. We always order the lamb roti roll.

The chicken or lamb bunny chow is good too. Their tandoori chicken with chips and naan bread is tastey as well. And I’ve also tried their chicken tikka. Any of the ones mentioned above, i would definitely recommend. And their prices are very reasonable if you’re looking for something filling but also affordable.

So the butter chicken is really tasty but there are two major issues: 1) there's barely any chicken per portion, and 2) the portion sizes are tiny. Also, if you're into more tomatoey butter chicken you'll love it. Otherwise, order something else.

I ordered the dal makhani with garlic naan. The naan was really tasty and made to perfection and the dal makhani was a good consistency and fairly tasty but had no bite at all and I would not classify it as gourmet either. Would order from them again in the future. Order was placed via UberEats so I cannot comment on the staff but order took a long time to be prepared (+-45min) and 10min for the delivery

Update: A family member of mine had some terrible food poisoning after eating one of the curries. Really unfortunate.

Had a quick lunch here in the food court after a bit of shopping. Luckily for us it was a Sunday so the place wasn't full and the food arrived quickly and the servers were really friendly. Went for the Rohan Josh with rice. Delicious!

Bunny Chow was great and everything was super fresh and tasty! Lamb was soft and well cooked. Will definitely be a recurring customer. Thanks!

Had a quick yet delicious early supper here after a bit of exhausting shopping.

We ordered a garlic naan which was enormous and easy to share. We nibbled on garam flour coated and fried potato vada filled with braised onion, fresh bright green peas, fresh chopped cilantro and seasoned with turmeric. A vegetarian delight!

Our mains were chicken Korma - chunks of tender chicken covered in an exquisite thick coconut & cashew gravy. The lamb Rogan Josh was a showstopper. The best we've tasted in quite a long time. Succulent & flavourful lamb coated in a rich sauce of kashmiri herbs and spices. (I'm going to dream about this for a while). Served with basmati rice that wad a little on the dry side.

What a gourmet meal indeed!

So my experience wasn't too bad. The food was decent and didn't take very long to come. Only criticism I really have is that the service came with a bit of attitude when I asked for recommendations... Oh and the presentation is not very 'gourmet' like the name suggests.

I've ordered food from Gourmet India twice and I didn't enjoy the food both twice. My friends who have ordered meat dishes however usually enjoy their food. The first time I ordered the paneer and it was terrible. On the occasion we ordered a portion of chips, a chick pea curry and the chicken sandwich. The chips were nice. I found the curry to be very average and the sandwich was not what I really expected it to be. It was cold and not very tasty.

First and last time I visit this place. I should have looked at the Zomato ratings before I ordered but anyway: ordered a veg bunny for takeaway, and when I got home I discovered they used last week's stale bread (you can even see from the photo how stale it is). The actual veg inside aren't great either, basically some beans in a bland tomato sauce. I can't even comment on getting good customer service.

Worst take out food ever! This evening we felt like some curry and ordered the Lamb Rogan and Butter Chicken. The flavours were beyond artificial with an unexplainable amount of surgery sweetness! We actually threw the food out as I would not dare give that to someone who was desperately hungry.

Warning: Do not eat there. There food is far from Indian aromatic cuisine.

On more than one occasion gourmet India has failed dismally. Their butter chicken and chicken tikka was just not tasty - the butter chicken was mushy and lacked flavour. The chicken tikka was quite burnt and also lacked flavour. Giving them a 3 because on my last visit I had the naan stuffed with chicken which was tasty and very reasonably priced. This definitely redeemed them however all in all though they still to up their game majorly.

I oredered the butter chicken and naan as a takeaway. The maan bread was nice, and the chicken tender, however the sauce was completely overboard and did definitely had colourant added. I thought it was qiite pricey for what I got - I was still hungry after eating, and I received no cutlery or serviettes, which made eating my food incredibly difficult.

I actually had a better meal than the reviews suggests. I really enjoyed the tandoori and the curry was flavorful. The naan was actually really nice too, the butter chicken was yummy and the vindaloo was awesome in my opinion.

Good food at good price that sums up my experience at gourmet India. We ordered a selection of dishes for the table and and all of them where flavorful. I'm exited to return when the need for India food arises.

What I adore about this place is whenever I do order from here its always consistent. I am yet to experience a bad meal from them. Their meat vindaloo was really good but their garlic naan never disappoints.

Found chicken pieces in my poorly prepared vegetarian food - cashier said I should expect cross contamination & advised me not to eat out because I'm vegetarian - LOL.
Gourmet India, its staff & owners are a joke. Never going back.
Refilwe Nombuyiselo Mathamelo
As a vegetarian it's difficult finding good filling food. This place has exceeded all expectations. Their curries are too die for and their naan bread is incredibly fresh. You can expect a waiting yime of about 30 minutes for your order.
Meera Naik
I always look forward to a well prepared Indian meal, but Gourmet India probably isn't the best place to look for this. As I do at every Indian restaurant, I ordered their naan and paneer. The naan was made really well, but the paneer was just salty and food colouring was definitely used. A friend of mine ordered the lamb burger which was apparently very tasty but just took very long to prepare.

We decided to get Mr Delivery to bring us two butter chickens and two garlic naan ... it arrived on time and warm.

However ... for R79 we did expect more than 7 miserable pieces of chicken floating in an oily quagmire of sauce.

Never again ... and its not the last they going to hear from me!!!

I have no idea why this place has received such dismal reviews. They changed their name to Passage to India, and after that and the mini makeover I've never had a problem with their food. I usually order the half tikka (pieces) not on bone, and it comes with chips. The chicken is succulent and moist and the best tikka near me in Claremont (there are not many places to begin with). I hardly ever order the curries, but have in the past and they were tasty too. A bit high on the sauce:meat ratio but good enough to mop up with some extra garlic naan.

Mutton biryani with no mutton - a rip off & tasteless - worth finding a place that does food properly . the wait of 30 minutes did have us hoping. Crap foid
Jaynisha Patel
I cannot say I will be going back. Ordered a mutton biryani and masala chips which took over 30 minutes to be ready. The masala chips were literally just normal chips with no masala. The mutton biryani had almost no mutton.

Butter Chicken and Chicken Korma are awesome! Great take away meal. I've never had a bad experience and I get take always all the time from here.
Suitcases And Lattes
I really like their chicken tikka. They are a lot slower than the other takeaways in the food court but they usually warn you if what you ordering will take a long time. I find them to be expensive. I ordered a full portion chicken tikka for R72 and this was what I got. Some carb - less alternatives would also be great ( like roast veg ).

Visited Gourmet India today and had the most disgusting service. When we got our food it was totally cold and when we complained, we were told that they could not find the table we we sitting at. A chubby girl called Allicia told me they would reheat the food as it was my fault. I then refused to accept it. She had a disgusting attitude and mumbled under her breath. She was more interested in texting on her phone than helping customers. I will never support then again.

Average food. Didn't have a good service experience the first time. Thought I'd try it again, service still bad. The managers of the establishment don't seem to care that customers wait for 30 min for take aways, and don't seem to want to help the single server taking orders and delivering food.
Aldine Bronkhorst
Staff was unfriendly. When I got home with my takeaway I realised that they didn't to put my rice in the bag. My curry was not bad but wont really go back. Quite an average experience.

I think 3,5 is fair. We got take away from Cavendish Square. Good korma and garlic naan. A decent Indian fast food vibe. Pleasant service across the counter always complimented by a lovely smile. My wife had the palak paneer which I finished because I am a fatty, it was nice. If you want Indian on the run I'd say yes. If you have the time to relax, rather go to a lovely Indian restaurant. There are many in CT. Peace!

Service was bad , we waited 45 minutes for 2 lamb roti's roll and when it came it certainly wasn't worth the wait. You could literally count the pieces of meat and there was more potato than anything at the price of about R40 each. For the type of meals served the place they are situated is not ideal. Eating a curry/roti with plastic knives and fork is not ideal.

This is a takeaway in the food court of Cavendish Square. After I ordered I read the reviews and it had me a bit worried.

I ordered Lamb Vindaloo with rice and plain naan with a 500ml soda drink. It all came to R97 which I think was readonable. The portion of rice and curry was also reasonable.

Service was friendly and not more nor less than can be expected. They warn you on the mdnu that yhey prepare their meals fresh and must expect to wait 25 minutes. Come on .. you cannot cook a curry in 25 minutes from scratch!! I waited about 15 minutes ..

Will I return .. hmm .. yes if I'm looking for a quick curry takeaway ..

Gourmet India used to be my go to for affordable Indian food from the time it was still called a Passage to India. However, my past few experiences have been, well, awful.

Twice now I've ordered chicken tikka masala and have received everything I expected except the chicken (read: there were 3 pieces). Oh and most of the taste was missing too.

I sincerely hope the owner turns it back around to the standards they used to have.
Mel
The most horrid Indian food in Cape Town! Instead of a veg curry you get a bowl of tomato paste with over-cooked veg!

Don't waste your time and money here. There a plenty of good Indian take away restaurants in Cape Town.

Very disappointing.

Hi, I've been eating at passage to India since the day they opened and still am today even after their named changed last month. First I started with the chicken tikka and I've now moved onto the tandoori chicken, my favourite and can compete with the big Indian restaurants. I can also highly recommend the butter chicken. This is two of my favourites.
Izzy Dagg
I tried the tandoori chicken from this joint a while back and that was decent so last night I decided to try the lamb rogan josh. it was not decent..the lamb did not taste like lamb and the curry was very watery and simply put, it did not taste nice...
Sam Parker
The food gave me terrible stomach cramps and was very salty.
The Paneer Curry also had only 1 piece of Paneer and a 1/5 of a potato.
James Hickman
So I don't often feel like a curry but when I do there is nothing that will suffice except a curry.

We went to watch a movie and thought we would just stop at the food court for a bite afterwards.

Never Never again! I got oil, not curry. Disappointed beyond belief. It was not even nice tasting oil.

Service was ok but hey it is a takeaway joint, you can’t really measure it against much.

Bottom line, that was my first and last experience of Passage to India
