Review Hamachi - Claremont

Chantal Solomons
Food was amazing! Although we were arrived before opening time, we were welcomed inside and could order cooldrinks while we waited for the kitchen to open. Service was prompt and friendly. Was the youngest birthday celebration and the staff did an impromptu song for him!! Well done to them!!

When reviews call Hamachi a hidden gem they couldn’t be more right! How is everybody not talking about this fantastic sushi restaurant?!?! I was delightfully surprised by their delicious sushi and of course their all-you-can-eat special active everyday of the week that includes hot items on the menu too! Be sure to ask for the salmon roses, sticky crispy chicken and bow ties from the menu (all part of the special and all delicious). The wide sushi range convinced me to sit at the conveyor belt because it’s tough to decide what to have! It’s all so good! I like that they have classic sushi as well as more fusion based sushi options. The managers are very hands on and the staff are happy and hard working. Attentive service that makes you feel like a local. Ambience is not too loud and you would feel comfortable enough going solo. Arrive hungry 😊

The sushi and Chinese food buffet special never lets us down! They have great options, unlike some sushi buffets, which can be very limited to what you can get. One of my faves is General Tso's chicken ! Yum!

My godson loves Asian food and because the menu is so vast... we can eat all of Asia in one place... it doesn't have India but Japan specifically he loves. It's his second time there.
KC Davel
A truly fantastic place to come and eat; the decor is excellent, has a great feel, was immaculate inside, and had an element of wow this is cool with a food conveyer belt moving sushi around an elegant bar. The stalf are fantastic their job is made easy by some buffer style eating, but even then they are attentive, kind and flexible in their jobs very professional. There is a great special, not sure if it's always on, but it's R215 for all-you-can-eat sushi now; if you come early, there are loads of black plates which are excellent as the night wears on, there are more blue and green, but I did not mind in the slightest all the sushi tasted tremendous and came for a great price.

One of my favourite sushi spots with friends. The service and staff are always great. Lovely atmosphere. Hidden gem. Their takeaway is just as great. It’s always ready in 20 😄 or less.
William Frost
Amazing place to go for all you can eat sushi! It currently costs R200 a person but it is so worth it! And absolutely amazing, the sticky Chicken and Crispy Sushi is a must try and it definitely is an amazing place to just enough good Chinese food!
Clint Malan
The sushi is lovey so many varieties to choose from and the buffet for R205 is worth every penny. Ample seating nice ambience and they will be seeing me again. Only thing I didn't like is there is no kiddies menu so leave them at home so you can have a great time and eat as much sushi as you can.
Matthew Sheppard
Bottomless Asian food. What more could you possibly want. I didn't say sushi I said Asian food cause they offer a wide selection of their main meals as part of the deal so you can eat all the sushi your heart desires and main meals for a very reasonable price. I didn't have high hopes going in as the friend who recommended the place has a bad track history but this hidden gem needs all the recognition it gets. My only regret was not knowing of it sooner and devouring more of their utter mouthwatering food.

Hamachi is by far the best sushi restaurant around the Southern Suburbs. They consistently have high quality sushi made with the best ingredients. The chefs are amazing too and make sushi with such passion. I’ve been craving sushi during lockdown and decided to get some from Hamachi today. It was definitely a great idea to get sushi from them today. My partner had the Salmon Combo platter and I had the veg platter. Needless to say, my sushi cravings may be satisfied for now but I’m eagerly awaiting my next meal from Hamachi! :)

Good first experience. Fantastic service from our waiter. Will definitely go there again to try other things on the menu. Sushi was great and so was the bill. So worth it. Give the buffet a try. I recommend the garlic surprised from the buffet menu.
Kurt Petersen
Hamachi is one of the best restaurants I have been to in recent years. The menu is diverse, and the vibe is great. 10/10 would recommend, especially the sushi buffet!
Ashleigh Sherwood
My favourite place to grab sushi! Always fresh! Never disappoints! Wide selection on buffet! Always love it here!
Riesna Reuben Audh
Love Hamaci, their sushi buffet is excellent, quality of food is superb - they don't skimp on the fish. Service is a little slow, but with the sushi belt running, you're covered.
Gilbert Carstens
I love this place, first it's really unassuming, location and decor, very plain. Their food on the other hand superb, yiu can have buffet style sushi and limited kitchen menu, or yiu can just order off menu which is quite extensive. The kicker is it's well priced for their portion sizes of everything on the menu. The service is good. I don't mind expensive places. But please give me value for money, this place is definitely value for your buck... Really refreshing, that they training black young up coming sushi chefs too... I'll be back, keep up the excellent work.

Another hidden treasure in Cape Town! A must go to for all sushi lovers. I love the fact that they have all you can eat sushi option. I will go again!
Jesse Van Niekerk
Good sushi, buffet has an incredible selection and the size of the pieces seems to be bigger than comparable restaurants. I ate until I was uncomfortable. Would recommend.
Jennifer de Goede (Jennicorn)
One of my favourite places to frequent as it's a great vibe for friends and family to relax in. The food is always delicious and worth any wait caused by everyone flocking for their great buffet experience! I recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy a casual, fun time and have plenty of food for a great price.

The evening started off great. The ambience was amazing. All I could think was, "Sushi get in my damn belly". That of which, was probably the best I've had in a while. I was stuffing my face with everything on the conveyer belt until... I could feel I was reaching my breaking point, and as much as I love sushi I just had to have one more plate. Upon dunking the first piece of tempura calamari roll in that delicious soy and stuffing it into my salivating mouth, my eyes made contact with a... Wait for it... A damn COCKROACH!!! He was just casually walking across my plate and exploring the marvels of the conveyer belt. The entire evening went to shit, quite literally. I informed the waitress and she in turn informed the manager who insisted that it's because of the boxes they store on the premises. Uh I call BS! There was absolutely no remorse from management. Just a meaningless "sorry". I was utterly disgusted and quite upset. I would most probably return to Hamachi only because they serve the best damn sushi, but please Mr and Mrs Manager, keep your pets at home. Word of advice, fumegate on a regular! FYI, this was Hamachi Claremont, Old Stanhope Road.
Mary Illingworth Banks
Food and service was great. Good tip, always ask your waitron their name and where they are from. Makes a huge difference to the rest of your time there! Had soup, dim sums and rainbow platter. Ordered a good chenin blanc to top it all!
Tina de Villiers
My favourite sushi place at the moment. Good food. Service is alright but can improve. The waiter we had yesterday was pretty good. I recommend Hamachi to all my friends :)
Karen Jill Majavie
Food was good but service terrible. Waiter just dumped food on the table. Right through the meal he never came to the table to check if everything was ok. Our wine was finished and not once did he come ask if we would like something else to drink. Needless to say, he did not deserve a tip
Brendan Widan
Always have a great meal. Staff know our orders. We don't even need to say anything and the food just arrives. Always fresh, always tasty. You might need to wait sometime, but it's made to order, so its appreciated and expected.
Joy Pughe-Parry
The best sushi I've ever had. Lovely waitress, lovely restaurant, fabulous, fabulous sushi!
Anthea Bissolati
Had a wonderful evening at Hamachi last night! Fantastic sushi and such delicious hot meals! Nandipha was our waitress and she was amazing! She looked after us so well. Thank you for making a family birthday super special! The whole family will be back really soon
Shanco Wilson
This could possibly be the best sushi we have had in CPT by far!
Vanessa Kindo Miller
This place has always had good food but was ruined by the shockingly bad service. A large group of girlfriends recently invited me to join them so I decided to give Hamachi another chance. They have truly upped their game wrt service. The buffet is awesome value for money
Hayley Fredericks
Loved the variety of sushi. Special was great - eat all you can for R159 included a hot meal sashimi and 3 portions of salmon roses. Will definitely go back
Jasmina Licina
We had a really great time at Hamachi! We enjoyed the "all you can eat" for 149 R from the conveyer belt. You can have everything from the belt, which offers you already a great variety. In addition, you can also order other stuff from the menu and it's included, so amazing! And as you order, you watch the chefs preparing your Sushi, everything is fresh and of high quality. We're coming back soon!
Gill Jones
Friendly service and great value sushi. Relaxed modest setting, with a modern sushi belt that is alive with fresh bursts of passionately made sushi. Loved it last night whilst in Cape Town
Liz Biggs
Love, love, love the Sushi. Nice laid back Asian restaurant that never disappoints. Once we've had bad service there but the many other times we have been, the service has been good.
Carol Ann Rudling
Your General Tsao's Chicken - The most famous Chinese Chicken dish in the world!!! Crispy fried with a spicy sweet sauce. Our meals were totally amazing!
Jade van Rhyn
Staff are friendly and the buffet menu is nice and diverse.
Martin van der Merwe
Always a treat. Fantastic food great service lovely staff.
Calvin Gentz
The food is really good and the chefs are always friendly, but, the waiters have a non chalant way of ignoring customers and the wait between meals is slow.
Mark Pitschlitz
Biggest rip off I have ever experienced . R75.00 for sweet and sour chicken NO RICE that's R15.00 extra and plus minus six balls in batter. Slow service as well.
Vicky Lucas
This has become a favorite go to for sushi buffet, the portion sizes are great because you are able to have a variety of different types of sushi. The service is alright, not 5 star but definitely not terrible. It has gotten a little bit slower s they have become busier in the recent months.

1 disappointment that I have is that they frequently forget to place orders for certain items and after waiting a while for the food, I usually don't feel like sticking around. They could definitely hire some more staff to eliviate this issue.

Despite the waiting, it is always worth it when the food gets to the table. I will continue to frequent here in the future as Hamachi is definately great value for money and very conveniently located.
Jennamea
It’s was delicious and an amazing experience
Helbor
A spacious hidden gem tucked away off Main Rd with ample parking at night, a sushi conveyor and dim sum! Who could ask for more? One of the most decently priced drink menus i’ve seen in a long time including hot sake @ ZAR55/ jug.

Favoured by students for the sushi buffet, Hamachi’s menu also offers a selection of Thai seafood dishes and curries, all very decently priced. It would be perfect if it had vegetable tempura, although the shiitake gyoza makes up for it.

Conveniently open till 21:30 7 days a week it’s the perfect Southern Suburbs sushi hangout. Will be back.
Francois Van As
Great selection of sushi (fresh, traditional and deep fried), amazing special, affordable drinks, friendly staff, fresh decor. No oily smell.
Fazlin Hoosain
We went for the all you can eat sushi everyone is raving about. Well, i was very dissapponted. Deep fried tempura, thats exactly what it was... deep fried batter! I couldnt find a trace of prawn. Salmon roses of which you can only have 9, wrapped with barely there salmon and too much rice. What a waste of a good R169. If you want quality over quantity, this is not the place for you. I'd suggest Best of Asia on Kloof street, they offer all you can eat as well.

See images of tempura prawn roll... no prawn!
Zee
Great fresh sushi! I’ve been here more than 3 times and every time I’m impressed with quality and service. Only reason I don’t visit as often is because I moved to the northern suburbs but when I visit the south I’ll def make a stop again

Whenever I'm in Claremont, Hamachi is always my go to for sushi. They're not too expensive like sushi in the CBD but they're fresh! They have quite a bit of variety which I love. The sushi chefs are friendly but the waiters could definitely use some training or rehiring. Generally when you go to a sushi restaurant (especially ones with a sushi belt) it's more self service than anything else, but having to ask for my glass of water 3 times is a bit drastic.
Melanie Du Toit
A friend of mine had mentioned fairly recently that his favourite place to get sushi in the burbs was Hamachi, so I decided to give it a try a few weeks ago and I've gone back multiple times since. My go-to rolls are the Snowflake Roll and the Hamachi Roll.
Dayne Williams
Had the sushi buffet last Friday. Was really good as it always is. R169 is worth it. The belt sushi is fresh and tasty and you can order a la carte which is speedy and also tasty an added bonus is you can order from the Chinese menu but we found it quite dry and tasteless. We had the sweet and sour pork, spring rolls and egg fried rice. Went straight back to sushi after that...
Jess Styles
After reading some reviews we went in expecting good sushi but not the best service. Thankfully we were pleasantly surprised and had great sushi and great service. We tried some new and interesting types of sushi that we'd never had before and really enjoyed them. At the end of the evening I did order a hot chocolate that was definitely the worst hot chocolate that I have ever had in my life, it tasted like one spoon of hot chocolate added to a glass of hot water. I'd definitely go back and just skip the hot chocolate next time.
Yajna Gold
This place is amazing value for money. The sushi was up to standard and delicious. I ate till I was sick. The atmosphere and the service was a little dull. Don't order Chinese (wasn't great) stick with the sushi buffet.
Emma Divaris
We go to Hamachi often because of the fresh sushi and excellent customer service. Their Samurai Platter is delicious - would definitely recommend!
Sarah Thatcher
Heard about Hamachi on Uber eats and was looking for something cheap and quick and was surprised by the freshness and deliciousness of this affordable sushi spot. Sashimi melted in your mouth it was so fresh and the flavours of the rest of the sushi I ordered was very satisfying. Highly recommended for a sushi take out.
Sash
I had such a nice time at hamachi. My brother and i went for the buffet today with a friend. R169 is so worth it with handrolls included. The salmon and avo was very fresh. The place is huge but very cozy. The service was not bad at all. Our waitress was very friendly and nice and helped my friend who was a newbie with sushi. The beef chow mein was really delicious. All in all it was a great first time at hamachi and will definitely go back very soon!
Mikhail Hathey
I ordered Hamachi Claremont via OrderIn and I was not to happy with the Sushi I ordered.

I had the 4 Piece California Prawn Tempura and I was expecting the Prawn Tempura to have more taste.
Food Guru Snapper
For me this place is one of the best sushi joints to get sushi stoned! Whenever we go here, we opt for the all you can eat buffet at R169 pp. I love sitting at the conveyor belt, for me personally it’s just the best spot to sit. They offer a huge variety of sushi items including all the classics as well as some chef specials. One can also order off the buffet menu if you don’t see what you desire on the conveyor belt. There is limit of 9 Salmon Roses and 9 Sashimi pieces per person. They do serve alcohol here. Only reason I did not rate them 5 is because their service levels are not that great, however it is bearable and that is why we always come back as their sushi rocks.

Hamachi - Claremont

Popped in at Hamachi for a late Sunday lunch with the family. This is my go-to sushi place. You'll find fancier sushi places with all the bells and whistles but I'm not a fan of all that.
We opted for the all you can eat buffet which costs R169 per adult and R89 for children under 10 years. It's really good value for money if you go there hungry or hankering for serious sushi fix.

The fish to rice ratio was perfect, the rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the fish was fresh and overall the sushi was delicious. Often places do not get the ratio right and you get filled with mostly rice, places also don't get the rice right which is the foundation of good sushi.

Two problems though, the tempura prawns were a bit too heavily battered and a bit oily and the service was great until our waitress' shift ended and a new waitress took over our table.

The service here has never been great but the tasty, good quality and reasonably priced sushi keeps me coming back for more.

Ordered take away the other night ,staff were friendly, didn't wait too long for my order and the sushi was great!Really good value for money !
Sharna Solomon
Fantastic! Definitely my new favorite sushi restaurant. Can't wait to go back! 😆 The sushi was fresh and delicious! The waiter was friendly but they did take quite a while to bring our food to the table. Other than that, it was great!
Shamera Daniels
The service was friendly and attentive and the best part everything we ordered was really good. If you looking with Sushi with some vegetarian Thai on the side this is a must
Miguel Dos Santos
Definitely a good place to have sushi. Very fresh and well made. Prices are good too. There was a lot of variety which is also really good for a sushi place. I think the only drawback was the slow service. Perhaps a little understaffed for a busy night. All in all a great evening.
Aletha Jeftha
The sushi buffet is great value for money, but I won't necessarily be rushing back. It's fairly average and there are better places to have really good sushi in Cape Town.
Vera Leven
It was ok. The fish in the sushi was still frozen.
The waiting staff is very friendly but a lot of our orders were lost in translation.
Next time I'd rather pay the little extra and go to Active Sushi.
Georgie Elliott
Loved the freshness of the sushi.

However, I was highly disappointed by the service. Very dismissive waitress. If a customer asks "Please can you bring the wontons first and the noodles as mains after (so second)? " then as a waitron, you should say "I'll ask the kitchen" or " yes sure" NOT "no, I'll bring them together" - completely shocked - and she laughed at us patronizingly when we asked for another menu as we sat down.
Nicole Whitehorn
Absolutely incredible sushi! Never disappoints. Just had takeaways for lunch and their quality and price are tough to beat. I keep coming back!
Alley Himmy
This is mainly for students and those on a budget for sushi. It really is a great spot. The friendly staff and subtle Asian ambiance gives this restaurant its character.
I recommend going between 11am and 1pm for lunch or between 6pm and 9pm for dinner. The sushi buffet is the best value for money because it includes other Chinese food.
I really enjoy this restaurant.
Blader Hanzo
I asked for a glass of water and received a bottled water instead; I was fine with this and accepted it. Upon paying for our meal our total was R170. This included the tip and tax. As we were about to get in the car the waitress came running after us and said she couldn't take the R100 note we gave because it had a little tear in it. I went to the manager and tried to explain that we are students and that we were not working and had no other money on our person. The manager kept insisting the same thing. That she didn't want that note and we had to give one without tears. There was no compromises and no alternatives they made. ( and this was in front of all the other customers) after trying to tell her that I would go home to fetch a note with no tears she kept insisting the same thing. I told her that was the only option and told her i'm leaving now and I placed the R100 with a tear on it on the table in front of her. ( very embarrassing in front of the other customers) The manager and a chef came running and screaming after us and the chef stood behind our car screaming at the top of his lungs. Things continued in this fashion untill the manager said just go and never come back before giving us the middle finger.Never have I experienced such utter disrespect and unprofessional behavior , they made us out to be some sort of criminals. 0 customer service. DO NOT SUPPORT THESE PEOPLE.
Rayne Alexander
Absolute favourite sushi buffet special in CPT and we regularly drive the 30 minute drive to Hamachi for their creme brulee! So worth a try.
Laura Son
Great sushi. Love the variety and portion size. The restaurant itself lacks ambience and the location isn't great. We've had a few meals from their 'hot' meal section and were very disappointed. I wouldn't order anything off their menu other than the sushi.
Kelly Webster
We ordered take aways, the thai curry was extremely tasteless. There was very little chicken or veg and a whole lot of watery sauce. The chow mein also mostly noodles with only a few pieces of meat. Both overpriced for what you get!
Mosa Mashati
Ive had hamachi quite a few times but not on a sit-down basis, of which I've beeeeen meaning to do .
It's definitely located awkwardly in Claremont , and I low key love that because it's one of those hidden gems you take your special people to.
It looks very cosy, candlelit tables and looks like it is visited by regulars mostly ,
Definitely worth a try. Oh and they are very very very affordable!!
Eleni
I am a sushi lover and have heard about this place non-stop for months now. I decided to check it out with my boyfriend since he is a regular there, and absolutely loved it. The sushi chefs are really accommodating and are really passionate when making their masterpieces. Their sushi is of great quality and the service is rather good too.
Direshan Pillay
Don't be fooled by the buffet. Unless you are super hungry just pick a combo and share with a friend much cheaper. The sushi is modern western sushi, but made reasonably well. The pink plates are what to target for cheap servings. Go here for sushi, the Chinese and Thai food have better varieties in Cape Town. Good ambience, nice place to go with a good size group. Chefs know regulars and can get a little extra when they know you.
Michael Ryder
excellent value and quality...had the buffet for r159...first class sushi and a choice of dishes...general tsaos chicken was excellent. japanese chefs and a lovely ambiance made this a real "find"
Charlie Shang
I come here every week for my pre leg day carbo load.

Sushi here is amazing quality for the price and definitely worth it. The chefs and waitrons are friendly and polite.

My only issue is that when you order the Chinese food dishes from the back of the buffet menu, the kitchen takes so long that you are already full from the sushi by the time the food arrives.

Other than that, this place is gr8 and 8/8 can recommend.
Jayden Lilley
The sushi was okay, but I ended up paying R400 for two people for the buffet and one bottle of water. The restaurant was completely empty when we walked in, but 10 minutes after we sat down they informed us that the kitchen had closed for their two hour lunch break (at 3pm) and we could no longer order chinese or dim sum, even though we were paying full price for the buffet. There was no one before us (we asked our waitress), not like they needed a break just as their first customers sat down.

We live in South Africa and I have never experienced such bad service in my life, which is honestly saying something. Our waitress was sweet but lacked even the most basic of waitressing skills. Very disappointing.
Direshan Pillai
One of my monthly regular restaurants to snack on tasty sushi with original takes. The venue is quite large with a dedicated sushi belt and ample seating. The buffet or platters are a good bang for the buck if you are feeling quite ravenous. The buffet includes select chinese dishes.
Sunil Osman
Came back to South Africa looking for a good sushi place and stumbled across Hamachi. Chose the conveyor belt and buffet option, which proved to be a good choice selection wise and great value for money! The service is okay...The waitrons and bar staff need to be educated on how to approach people at a table, but at least she checked in once in a while to see if everything was okay and also corrected the drink order. Two sushi chefs were not wearing any head covering...They didn't have long hair. It wouldn't have stopped me in any case. With a 3hr buffet time limit and wide selection, nothing would.
Sara Krunic
If you're going to Hamachi then definitely go for the all you can eat sushi, it's worth it. I haven't tried the other food on the menu but the sushi is of a good standard. The service is rather slow though but still a great place to go none the less
Elle Mbadaliga
I enjoyed the Sushi. Went on a quiet Sunday afternoon. The service was quick and the staff were friendly. The restaurant is very clean and quiet.
Simira
The sushi chefs are super friendly and the sushi is always top quality. There's also a wide variety on the belt and if you would like to order more "traditional" sushi, you can.
Definitely on recommendation.
Mikaela
Hamachi's all-you-can-eat sushi deal for R149 is definitely worth your money. The sushi is not particularly amazing, but it is good and Hamachi offer tons of variety. For R149 you can also order a few of their Thai dishes, which I would definitely not recommend. The portions are small and bland. The chicken I had was also quite rubbery.

Whenever I've been to Hamachi, it hasn't been very busy but the service is still quite slow and most of the time is spent trying to get your waiter's attention. If you're craving a cheap sushi fix definitely give Hamachi a try, but it doesn't have much else to offer.
Johnny Jol
Pretty decent sushi served in a very spacious restaurant. Menu offers many options and value is good too. A go-to place for my whole family.
JotterJo
Housed in the old Sake builing in Claremont in a quiet street with ample parking. The restaurant is very large inside, tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean.

This restaurant offers the best odd both Japanese & Chinese cuisine in an extensive menu. Unable to decide? Have the R149 buffet and have it all!
The chef likes to try new and interesting sushi combos and then adds them to the menu.

The menu also offers dimsum which is fresh - not frozen and beautifully made. There are a range of delicious dippng sauces to accompany the dimsum. The shitake & veg dimsum was outstanding!
All dishes are made fresh and you can really taste the difference.
We will return.
Crystal Espin
If it’s a great all-you-can-eat sushi and Chinese food deal you want then Hamachi, in the southern suburbs is the place to be. For R149 you can eat as much as you like from the sushi belt and a special sushi ‘buffet’ menu which offers a wide selection of sushi favourites as well as some unusual, but delicious, ingredient combinations. I paid a visit to this casual spot last week and loved it. Sure, it’s not the best sushi in Cape Town but it’s delicious and well worth it when you do the sushi buffet. The all-you-can-eat special also allows you to try some other goodies from the menu including vegetable spring rolls, Chicken Chow Mein, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Oyster Beef, and Cashew Nut Chicken. I love that the Chinese food options are brought to you as smaller, tasting portions so you can really get your fill in instead of ordering a large meal and not being able to try anything else on the ‘ buffet’. I also tried quite a few things on the sushi menu but my favourites were definitely the Salmon Gift (salmon, avo, may, caviar), Bamboo Roll (cucumber wrap, tempura prawn, avo, chilli bean mayo sauce), and the Same Size Love (prawn tempura, tuna, avo, cream cheese, mayo, onion).
Alex Sanan
I have such a soft spot for Hamachi! My boyfriend and I discovered this hidden little treasure about a year ago and it has been our go to for those days when your only solution is all-you-can-eat-sushi. Although the location of Hamachi isn't ideal, I really don't have a bad thing to say about the quality of the sushi. It doesn't quite live up to Sushi Box, but the sushi buffet completely satisfies my cravings each and every time. There is always a wide variety of beautifully prepared sushi plates to choose from and as a complimentary addition to the buffet option, you can also order side dishes from a set list which includes spring rolls and sweet and sour chicken. The buffet is now priced at R149.00 per person - I do think this is quite expensive but I can almost guarantee you that you will eat over and above that and get your monies worth.
Go on, give it a try!
Jaime Iglesias Hu
So decent for all you can eat, not your typical "cheap sushi" when they add tons of rice and keep the fish low key... Basically it's hella lit, well done.
Nicole O'Neill
Hamachi is alright! If you are craving some quick sushi, it's a good meal. The sushi is certainly not outstanding, but it's good. They have some different options. They have a special one (most of the time?) which is something like R130 you can eat - I think that's fairly expensive. I think there are better place to eat for cheaper. That being said, I only ate here once and that was with the all you can eat. I am not sure how much I would have eaten and what the bill would have been if I had eaten off the all you can eat menu.

The service isn't the greatest, but I can be patient when it comes to these corner sushi type restaurants. It isn't a fine-dining experience, so don't go there expecting one.
Tessa Brown
The sushi is made fresh, which is really great. The dumplings are particularly delicious. The duck is also a great option! The owner is a friendly lady who cares a lot for her customers. Recommend this place!
Jamjar
Every time I walk into this restaurant, I am greeted by the polite and beautiful owner, who despite my young face and shallow wallet, treats me like her favorite customer. It is one of the few places I don't feel like I am viewed as an insignificant and meddlesome student. Im terms of food, I have yet to try their other meals (which I have no doubt are top quality) the sushi is always of exceptional quality and so fairly priced. I know this, because prior to discovering Hamachi, the price of sushi resulted in my cutting the food group from my diet altogether. I get the sense that the owner is so passionate about her cuisine, and holds the restaurant close to her heart, that she insists on perfect quality, perfect service, and fulfilling customers wishes no matter what. It saddens me that the location doesn't scream "come in, we are open and ready to make your day" but I will always recommend this hidden gem to friends and family.
Johnelle Olivier
Went for an early lunch. Excellent sushi and they even cater for younger sushi lovers as well (R80 for buffet for under 10). Well priced with good variety.
Chanel Pillay
Very underwhelmed with Hamachi. I was craving sushi and decided to try their sushi out. I walked in and none of the waiters were interested in addressing me. Eventually I had to ask for a menu and the waiter gave me a menu that was wet from her wiping it. Eventually the nice sushi chef helped me by the sushi bar.

The sushi is very affordable and there is lots to choose from. I was disappointed that the avo on the sushi turned brown (you can see in the picture below) and the tuna didn't taste very fresh, which is all very off putting. The salmon on the other hand did taste fresh.

While paying my bill, I asked the waiter if they get busy and she said no, most times it is just 4 or 5 people dining there. So I wonder, with them preparing a whole conveyer full of sushi what happens to it when only 4 people show for dinner. Is it then served the next day ?
Meera Naik
By far the worst "Thai" food I have ever eaten. My vegetable curry was nothing but salted boiled vegetables. The rice was stale and sticky. Not a pleasant experience at all. To make it worse, the service was terrible. Will not be going back.

Love their sushi!

Very reasonably priced and sushi is always fresh. Service is good- have been here many times and have always been greeted with a friendly smile.

Highly recommend.

Food: below average. Service: horrible because there was only one waitress while the owner (?) sat on her gat. Other people walking around, not helping waitress at all! Would never go back.

Went there for the sushi all you can eat, as a group of 7. the Sushi was good, but not over the top. But it was nice to have a running sushi bar. The service was good, the interior a little unlovely and not very cozy. Nice for a bite, but dont necessarily have to come back

We went to Hamachi after reading the reviews on zomato and a few other sites. We eat a lot of sushi and this was probably the worst sushi I've had in a long time - more rice than anything else. To top it off the service was terrible! I ordered a glass of water twice and never received any, had to flag our waiter down countless times for assistance and we were left unattended to for about an hour. Eventually we ended up standing by the till in order to get the bill. Not worth the price tag.

We have been going to hamachi/Hong for many years, but unfortunately this evening will be the last. The buffet is filled with 90% rice and we were 'forced' to eat the sweet and sour pork which was completely over cooked and had clearly been cooked in dirty oil! Despite the almost instant food poisoning, the highlight of the evening has to be the manager who treats her lovely staff with such disrespect it's almost laughable. My only advice is to avoid at all costs!!!

We enjoyed the fried dumplings and veg sushi platter. They have some innovative sushis that you dont get at other restaurants. Our friends also said their salmon sushi was fresh and delicious. Definitely worth a try.

We came to Hamachi on New Year's Day as we were desperate for sushi.
We ordered take always and waited for over 30 minutes for what was very average sushi and honestly the strangest dim sum we've ever seen.
The fish didn't seem very fresh which is always a bit off-putting and the pork dim sum was less than desirable.

We popped in here last night for a quick post shoot dinner. M had the all you can eat buffet which is good value for money. You can have three portions of salmon roses and a portion of sashimi included in the buffet and order any other sushi off the menu.
I had a prawn ha still and Tom yum soup ( my faves) and both were pretty good. The Tom Yum was probably one of the better ones I've had and not too oily ( as they can be), fragrant and had lovely FRESH vegetables in it.
Nice spot for a mid week quick supper.
The sushi here is not so bad. Decided to try it out this morning and it's quite alright. The portions are quite big compared to the other sushi restaurants I've been to so definitely a plus.

This has become a regular haunt of mine. Their sushi special platters are great value for money and win me over every time so I haven't actually tried any of the other dishes on offer. However, friends say very good indeed.

Good but not great – although there is some interesting sushi on the menu. This seems like the type of restaurant better suited to a group gathering than a dinner for two.

This place is to die for,the decor is modern and sets an awesome relaxing feel to the place. The sushi is great, give it a go. No disappointment

Amazing. There sushi is to die for and they have never once been disappointing! I have yet to come across better sushi! the staff is amazing and always friendly.

Probably the best sushi in Cape Town, this place gives Willoughby's a run for their money! The sushi is absolutely delicious, and with a R139 all-you-can-eat offer, all day every day, it's hard to leave Hamachi without loosening your belt a notch.

The service is nonexistent, but sit at the bar and grab sushi off the conveyer belt as it passes you. You won't be disappointed! The sushi chefs work like robots, and are meticulous and clean, and even if you're not a sushi fan, it's worth sitting at the conveyer belt just to watch the precision of the chefs at work.

Definitely my favourite sushi in Cape Town!

So good, I am going back tonight ;). All you can eat sushi for R139.00. Such a win! The dim sum is really good and I love their Jasmine tea. My wife and I have a huge history with this place. It's the old Sake House which we went to for 6 or 7 years while dating. We were seriously part of the furniture and with the amount we spent we should have invested in the place ;). We had some great date nights there, sharing our hopes and dreams for the future. I was also going to propose there but plans changed. Chef Eddy and Ignace (old owner and floor manager respectively) are two great friends who we are still in touch with from Sake House days. Chef Eddy had just renovated when he sold so it's basically the same vibe, which I love. The sushi bar is a new addition and I dig it. A great place to eat well priced sushi without that mass produced buffet feel. It is all made fresh. Time to make new awesome memories at Hamachi. We love the place and are so glad to rediscover the love and passion for sushi which is now Hamachi. They have a Stellenbrau craft lager on tap for the beer lovers like me. They also have some awesome hot Thai dishes. This one is worth a try if you have not yet been ;)

Been here a few times now and service isn't great on average, so I thought I would just add that to this review. I like been as fair as possible to give my most realistic opinion of a spot to eat out at.

Will be back soon to test service once again...as I enjoy the sushi.i

LOVE this place. Of all the sushi places I have tried (and there have been many), this is the best value for money for sushi in my opinion. Everything is fresh, delicious and different, not just the standard 'run of the mill' sushi. They also do many different Asian cuisines as well. Dim Sum is delicious, and the Thai curries are very good. I love the decor of this restaurant, and even though the atmosphere is nothing like some of the other top sushi restaurants, this place really is a hidden gem. More of a word of mouth kind of place, so take my advice and give it a try!

These guys do all sorts of sushi. You're sure to find something you like. They include a few Chinese food items with their sushi buffet so you can try a bit of both. I also enjoy their salt and pepper prawns (these come in the shell) .. Wouldn't recommend the sweet and sour prawn though.. It is just too sweet and the flavour of the fish is completely lost in there. Sweet and sour pork on the other hand is quite yummy.

Nice food, some awesome service, lovely atmosphere. There is a great buffet too. Definitely worth a try if you are ever in the Claremont area.

This is truly the best sushi and Chinese restaurant I know. I've eaten at so many places, but I always return here, with a really good result every time. I'm never disappointed, and I'm never hungry when I leave. Pricing very good, sushi quality outstanding. My only comment is that it doesn't attract newcomers too well as they don't put a lot out on the belt in order to avoid wastage, however, if you're new to their menu, you won't know what to order and you may rely on what you see to build your impression of the restaurant. Because I have returned so many times, I can say with confidence that it is consistently excellent and, unlike many sushi restaurants who offer hot plates as well, their hot food is of an equally high standard. Best value meal: all you can eat for R139, which includes entire sushi and dumpling selection on menu as well as some hot plates. My personal favourite signature dish: seared tuna sandwich - amazing!

Been a frequent visitor even before the name changed from Sake house to Hamachi, sushi is always top quality, however the belt sometimes lack variety.

Staff is always friendly & welcoming however the service can be on the slow side at times.
Love the sushi here. Look, the atmosphere is not great but the sushi makes up for it. Great for a work meeting over lunch or a relaxed dinner with friends or family.

Had a great Saturday night out pre-load shedding & no kids. Good service and nice wine list. Enjoyed desert too. Liked sushi so much we got the groupon special & took kids the next week. Downside...we should have got 2 vouchers for my 13 year kids since they can eat much more than a shared 48 piece platter! But mid-week still good service, great selection of sushi & well priced wine. Next time = buffet!

Not fantastic - have been on two occasions and neither time was I blown away. The sushi is average but what lets them down is the complete lack of atmosphere (like sitting in a warehouse) and the incredibly slow service. Both times were Sat nights and the restaurant empties out by 845/9pm...dud I miss something. ..is it a breakfast and lunch place? We're usually one of only a handful of tables anyway...perhaps herein lies a story.

I decided to give this place a try after I read the reviews, oh my gosh!!! How I was not disappointed...the only reason why I can't give this place a 5 is because the service was a little on the slow side but the food is superb! The sushi is done so differently and you can taste the freshness and the spring rolls were divine as well! They have a buffet special that they run which is definitely value for money! Give this place a go!

I love Hamachi! Since I found this not-so-secret hidden spot, I've been back numerous times, on dates and with friends. Lovely environment, conveyor belt and it's open on a Sunday. The sushi is fantastic quality and the bigger pieces are neatly cut into perfect mouthfuls. Fresh, fresh, fresh and unusual things to choose from.

Quick service, fair prices, and an all-you-can-eat special is available for hungry guests. This is my load-shedding favourite spot.

Good sushi not too much rice with decent amount of fish. great variety with the buffet. Dessert included on the belt also. Just be careful when getting the roses its not included in the buffet price if you want extra.
Conrad Jonck
Been there for the all yiu can eat sushi. The quality of sushi is very good, find a seat at the counter and take a few intimate friends with.

One of the best midweek sushi getaways in the southern suburbs.. friendly staff, awesome chefs and the sushi is consistently awesome! Value for money
Mathew West-Russell
I came here for the all you can eat sushi special. The sushi was great as we could choose what we wanted from the conveyer belt, so you could choose exactly how much and what type you wanted. The sushi was decent taste wise, but the service was poor. The fact that we were getting up and getting our own food it would be expected that we would not have to constantly call waiters over for drinks and other orders. Otherwise I good evening and will be back for the special I. The future.

Finally I got in the car and drove all the way from Table View to Claremont for Sushi and boy was it worth it. We had some dim sum to start, although very limited selection they were delicious. 3 of us ordered the Samurai sushi platter and we were all very impressed. I will definitely go back. Fish was deliciously fresh, staff friendly and a very pleasant atmosphere.
After finding this place on Zomato we decided to go for some sushi. Hamachi is situated in a quiet culdesac opposite Bmw. The place has a very deserted and lost feel to it. Some people might find it quaint and offbeat.

I decided to risk it based on the reviews. We ordered the Hamachi Rolls, Tempura Prawns and Same Size Love.

The tempura was cold. The rice tasted like it was refrigerated.

I was not impressed at all and even left some that I couldn't finish.

O my word - I only recovered now from one of the most amazing dining experiences I have had in such a long time - we visited Hamachi on the Zomato recommendations.
They are running a buffet special - which is one of the best I have ever experienced - it includes all sushi on the conveyer belt & cooked / sushi dishes on the prescribe menu list.
The amazing part was that everything is freshly made to order and anything on the conveyer is still so fresh that it wow'ed our sox off.
The tapas portions of the cooked items on the buffet makes for great sharing.
Loved the food & attention to detail.
Will definitely go back.

By their own description Hamachi is; Thai, sushi and dimsum. In my description they are delicious. Being a lover of tuna crunch, that was my first go to order second was some veggie dimsum. The dimsum came first, arriving in a very strange looking square pancake, they were good and reminded me of veggie spring rolls. The sushi came next and rivaled that of the greats, it was crunchy on the outside and tasty on the inside. (I even got an extra two pieces, shhh) The best sushi I've had in awhile. With friendly staff, delicious food and decent prices it's a wonder they aren't full booked every night, the best kept secret of Claremont.

Went for the first time today after I spotted it at BMW. So glad I did! Wooh my new favorite sushi spot! R139 all you can eat so worth it. Service was descent. But the sushi chefs were amazing so friendly and helpful telling us what diff dishes were and letting us sample things, the sushi was delicious and fish so fresh! Really all thumbs up can't wait to go back!

I eat at Hamachi frequently because the food is delicious and very reasonably priced. The buffet is a real bargain and the sushi chef is always willing to make 'special requests' sushi. My favorites are the teriyaki seared tuna sandwich, the tempura prawn Californian rolls and General Tsoa's chicken, in fact I would drive there just for a portion of the chicken - it is so delicious. The staff are very friendly and obliging but can be a bit slow with big groups but when asked to come to the table more often they will do. When in a small groups or at the conveyor belt, then there is no problem with service.

Recommended by Candice Bresler, I knew I was in for some seriously good sushi. We took full advantage of the R139 sushi buffet, which includes as many spring rolls and hot meal tasters as you like. My personal favourite was the Same Size Love sushi roll, but even the simple fashion sandwiches were fantastic. Although the service was underwhelming, I loved that we were served chewy heart-shaped mints at the end of our meal - the perfect accompaniment to a couple of bow ties (which were sticky, sweet and perfect!)
Kate Coulson
Konnichiwa! Delish sushi and a lovely ambience. The service was a little slow but I will definitely be back! For 139 bucks you can get a great buffet including hot mains as well as sushi. The spicy calamari dish was a little chewy and bland but for the sushi-lovers the tuna crunchy roll was fin-tastic!! ;)
Travis
The fish was fresh and sushi, full of flavour. The restaurant was very quiet when we arrived and so the turnaround time was quick. Will aim to make use of the all you can eat buffet option next time.
