Review The Eatery Wood Fired Grill - Claremont

The Eatery has served as a reliable restaurant for hosting meetups and birthday events for years on end! With a lively vibe, beer and food specials as well as food challenges, this joint is the perfect place for all sorts relaxed but tasteful experiences. The have an amazing Tuesday special consisting of a burger, chips and drink (beer or milkshake for 2 for R222.

This was a lovely restaurant experience. We half didn’t expect the play area to be there because it looks like a very “grown up” restaurant from the front. The play area itself is a bit small but it’s enough to keep little kids entertained. They also provided our kids with some colouring pages which was great. The only down side would be that the kids can get quite rowdy and the big kids tend to be quite mean towards the younger ones. There is a board stating children need to be supervised at all times however, so that might be a failing on our part as parents. The tables are however close enough to see the play area. The food was delightful. We had small meals which were quite satisfying. Our drinks were good. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Overall a lovely dining experience.

Loved the food. They honestly make amazing burgers here. I had a drink called sex on the deck and it was so delicious.

Loved our lunch experience! Great burgers that are full of flavour! And a wonderful beer & burger special that is currently running at the moment.

was served by excellence this evening- Queermafia 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🤞🏽🫰🏽 honestly, if you're not here for the positive energy (nevermind the amazing food and the inevitably perfect service) - then i dunno 🤷🏽‍♀️ dinner has never been sweeter ✨

As I arrived, the owner welcomed me and walked me to my table. He was very friendly and gave me a short story about the place. Beautiful setup, and I enjoyed the atmosphere. My breakfast treat and beverages were delicious. The staff on that shift was very helpful and friendly. It's a nice place to be enjoyed by the whole family.

The Eatery in Rondebosch is great place for families, kids and business lunch. Staff is very friendly and I have to say that they have great choice of food and good draft beer. I had Loaded steak bowl and I definitely recommend. Also, we ordered poppers, wings and tacos...just perfect size for appetizers. Enjoy.

Update review: Still great service and atmosphere at The Eatery. Kids enjoy the play area and the special kids menu/coloring sheet. On the food, I was slightly less impressed than my first visit. Food is still good, but chicken was overdone, and the steak was tough. Hope it gets back to the level I am used too

Best local restaurant in the area! Service is extremely attentive and their lunch club is super interesting and well executed. The owner Marius is an excellent chap and his range of Hot Sauces will keep you forever on the edge of your seat! The only restaurant in the area which has a true passion for their craft and it shows in the execution! Fun for the whole family or working folk taking a break for lunch or dinner. A must visit!

THE EATERY WOOD FIRED GRILL:

A FOOD FRENZY FOR YOUR TASTE BUDS

Everyone has a favourite hangout and we are no exemption. The Eatery Wood Fired Grill in Belvedere Square is our “go to” restaurant and it never, if ever, disappoints. The staff are always friendly and the food is always good. Except for their vegetarian burger, “The Veganista”. Whatever happened to the huge brown mushroom in place of a patty? Or better still the chickpea and mushroom patty? Beetroot is a side salad or a garnish not a meal on its own, and even though it included quinoa, red kidney beans and barley all you could taste was beetroot.

I have recently changed my diet to pesco-vegetarian so the Squid Salad was my choice. Delicious!! What more can I say. Fried squid tubes and tentacles in a mountain of broccoli, tomatoes (I had mushrooms instead) red onion and fried capers. My hubby chose the Managers Special burger which was a chicken fillet with goat’s cheese and avocado. Yummy Deluxe!! We were offered a Pinotage house wine to try and I simply rolled out. Ha ha ha!! I am in a wheelchair.

Let’s talk accessibility then. Easy enough as there is a ramp, yet whoever designed the bays for car parking failed to allow space to get your wheelchair to the ramp if the bays are all occupied, so alternative scenario is go to Colcacchio’s in the same complex where there is no accessibility problems. Strike that, rather get one of the sexy waiters to carry you in. I must stress though that this is not The Eatery’s fault, all blame is on the complex management. Another inconvenience is the toilet. As a rule the restaurant itself doesn’t need to cater for the disabled so I am not going to complain.

So go to The Eatery and indulge your taste buds in a food frenzy. Sate your thirst on a multitude of grape sins and you will not be sorry…..you will be well looked after by knowledgeable sexy waiters (ours was Keagan)……the next time it could be Armani….or Andre….or Matthew…….crikey did I leave anyone out? The ladies are lovely too but I will leave it up to my hubby to comment. The owner is Marius and is always willing to stop at your table for a chat. This is a family of smiles and great service in a bonhomie atmosphere.

We always enjoy ourselves and will return again and again.

When we arrived, the lady infront (must be the manager as she does not wear uniform) was so unfriendly, didn't greet when bringing our menus. Just put it on table and walked away. We waited so long for our food, yet the people at the table behind us recieved their food within minutes of ordering. (The restaurant was not full). The food was EXTREMELY bland and the sweet potato fries seemed like it was in the freezer for a very long time. We asked the waitress why I food took so long and the people behind us was so quick her response 'thank you letting us know'. She didn't even say 'I'll inform the manager or kitchen staff' we will never be returning. Worst experience by far.
Alex The Entertainer
---ENTERTAINER ACCEPTED---- The place was amazing, more than just the vibe the staff is like being served on a first class flight friendly and top notch assistance, I highly recommend booking a table as the time myself and partner arrived there was only 1 seat available and the evening for myself personally called for an outside meal, highly recommended and the meals are decently priced makes you feel guilty to entertain...will return definitely

The food looked and tasted good! I had the espetada, and it was cooked to perfection, but a little tough. Rump can be sometimes, so I don't hold it against them.
It seemed everyone that dined with me also enjoyed their meals, although no raving reviews were given.
It was awesome to get discount from The Entertainer app, so that's a big plus for those who use it!
The atmosphere was okay. It could have been much better had little kids not been stomping up and down the deck all night, but I guess that's what you get when you're seated near the play area.
Service was good. Overall we had a pleasant evening and our bellies were satisfied.

Popped in here for a quick lunch with my daughter. Very nice venue. Quick friendly service with a good knowledge of the menu and meals recommended were good. Both the chicken and the sirloin were tender. Bonus that we could use entertainer :)

I must say, this is a real hotspot in Claremont/Newlands area. So much so that all I saw when I initially walked in, the tables were full of reservation signs and even locals recommended it. Service was excellent in terms of efficiency and friendliness. The fish gujons I had started the experience well. The batter was light and crisp and the fresh fish was just the perfect way to the tone. The Argentinian steak was not bad at all. The chimichurri sauce was just what a normal chimichurri sauce tastes like and steak cooked perfectly although the steak had parts that were burnt. Overall, this is a great place if you are in the Claremont or Newlands area.

Promising from the outside, friendly staff, but unfortunately the menu at The Meatery is by far the most vegetarian unfriendly one i've seen in a long time. Hard to believe the city is Cape Town, and the year is 2019. If you're a non-meat eater, your options are beetroot salad, or beetroot salad. You may not have a starter. I pity non-meat eating guests who are invited to The Meatery and have no escape route.

The service here is really good, waiters are quite friendly and the food is mouth watering. I'd definitely suggest popping in for a bite to eat instead of driving past and missing out!
Karl Van Straaten-Addinall
Food , simple menu , reasonable prices and value for money ! Atmosphere is great , service is good , no complaints ! It’s a easy going family restaurant, kids enjoy themselves with play area close by !
Ronald Addinall-Van Straaten
Their full rack of ribs are divine. Love the local relaxed vibe it has. Waiters are friendly and on point. Wholesome eating without pretentiousness.
Matshepo Motlanthe
The food was excellent...even for an early start to the day. Enjoyed breakfast and enthusiastic service from the staff. The cleanliness of the restaurant was something refreshing to see on an early morning as well. The menu is well-priced and the portions don't disappoint either. They have daily lunch specials, so that is motivation to come back and try their cuisine.

The service was really good! I felt well taken care of from the moment I walked in right up to when I left.
The ambience was casual- lots of moms catching up after fetching their children from school!

The food was good and I found their lettuce to be crisp and fresh which was lovely and worth mentioning in my opinion.

I’ll definitely return, should I find myself hungry and around Claremont!
Three Pensioners Plus Our Attorney
We had our October lunch at the Eatery Wood Fired Grill in Claremont. We had a new pensioner join our lunch group – CH’s brother MH. JT had the Ostrich Burger which he said it was excellent. CH and MH had the Hake and chips which the both thoroughly enjoyed and I had the Steak and Egg which was cooked to perfection (medium rare). Sunshine our waitron provided us with excellent service.

Food is amazing. Their grilled calamari is so tender and delicious. If you feel for a burger then any of their burgers will definitely hit the spot. I've tried ostrich, beef and chicken and all if them are amazing! Friendly professional staff that are always available and helpful. Love this place. Always a good experience here
Robin
I've been here three times in the past year and have had nothing but great experiences. The burgers are generous and the grilled taste is extra tasty. The food is fresh and they have great lunch time specials. The service is quite good as well, with attentive waiters and not a long waiting time for the food. Great, small spot for a quick bite and even for dinner. I'd recommend

My husband and I visited The Eatery for the first time and had their Monday night steak (300g rump or sirloin) and chips special for R99 each. The steak really is wood fired and is marinated with a delicious rub rather than the usual barbecue basting. The chips are delicious too. I ordered a cracked black pepper sauce on the side which was a bit disappointing - strangely sweet and not very peppery at all. Just tasted like a watery cream sauce. Besides that, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening and will definitely be back to try one of their other specials. Our waitress, Dom, was lovely and friendly and offered us a loyalty card. The only other comment is that the restaurant tends to get quite hazy and smoky from the wood fired grill, so it may be an idea to install an extractor fan but otherwise great food and great value for money. My husband is something of a steak connoisseur and said it was one of the best steaks he's had in Cape Town. High praise indeed!

Very friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and great food. Something for everyone.. And the prices are reasonable.
Great experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

We searched Zomato for a cosy place near Rondebosch to have Sunday lunch on a cold winter day and came up with The Eatery in Claremont. Surprisingly the establishment's own website does not give their address.

When we walked in I was immediately disappointed. The place lacked ambience and was certainly not cosy. The big pile of wood featuring in the advert would appear to be for the wood grill which in any case is out of sight for diners. In fairness we were offered blankets by the very friendly staff but a log fire was what we had hoped for.

We had starter calamari and peri peri chicken livers which were both delicious but ... cardinal restaurant sin ... our mains arrived while we were still half way through starters!

I had pork ribs as a main. Expensive, a little dry and too sweet for my liking. My wife had chicken salad and my son the hake and chips both of which were pronounced good.

Altogether a rather ordinary experience offset by friendly, helpful waitresses.
Claudia Ludwig
Their New York Cheesecake is SO good 😊😊

Totally pleased my cravings 😅

And such friendly staff too!!

I will definitely be returning 👌🏼
Cptboytjie
Real men rub their meat. No basting but really great rubs that goes on their ribs and steaks. Done really well over the coals. Combined with a good red wine from their selection and churros for dessert
Jonny Murray
Really simple solid meal. I had the Sirloin steak which was really good while my friends had the R99 burger and milkshake special which looked like the better decision. Great value for money.

I first ordered from The Eatery on UberEATS and vowed I would go in physically. As a person that goes for ribs and chicken wings in a wood fire restaurant I was glad to have chosen the Lamb rump.
Ambiance:- warm and family friendly especially on Sundays. The music is deserving not to loud and enough for one to hear good music while others have a conversation.
Drinks menu is great! They offer happy “hour” from 5pm-9pm but then I love my wines.
Service:- it’s wonderful. The patron kept on checking up on me and alerted me on my food. They know when to come to you so it doesn’t seem like they disturbing you. Always reliable.
Food:- where can I start??? The Lamb Rump was divine- medium well recommended- and it was with a side of grilled veggies. I suggest when ordering this dish one should salt their meat cause it is accompanied by this chummichi* sauce that brings out the taste in the lamb. The lamb juices make it better. Also the lamb that I was sourced with had this fat that made the rump better as the juices of the meat were around it, talk about heaven on a plate.I also partnered my food with the Peacock Merlot and surprisingly it went well. My drink highlighted my food and I am glad.
Desert:- I had the New York Cheesecake and I would say it was average. Noting special about the one they made but it’s great to have something sweet after scrumptious meal.
Overall I would give this place 4/5 cause of the dessert. It would’ve been nice if they have a special dessert but their dessert menu was mediocre.

Think upscale version of Spur- crowd pleasing, good food, great for groups, doesn't break the bank, but still a rich, warm enough environment to stay on long before and after your meal for drinks and table banter.

I went to the Eatery Wood Fired Grill for a zomato meet up and tasted a fair portion of their menu offerings:

On average, their starters were fantastic- Good range, well made, delcious and well presented. Their calamari really stood out for me! Would recommend.

I tried the line fish and the steak with chimichuri, and both were good at most. I didn't give the ribs a try myself, but have heard they are fantastic-they certainly looked it!

For dessert, I gave the churros a go since I haven't really seen them much in SA, and wasn't quite blown away. They were moreish- but mainly because anything with both dough and copious amounts of sugar is.

Although perhaps not a foodie haven, I'd certainly return to this spot if I'm looking for a safe place to take a slightly larger group, or perhaps try them on UberEats one day when I'm feeling lazy!
I was invited to the most spectacular Zomato foodie meetup a few weeks back. The eatery wood fired grill is tucked away in belvedere square in Claremont, and to be honest I'd never been there before! But boy oh boy , am I glad I got the chance to visit this restaurant. Its got a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and super friendly staff to match.

We were presented with a platter of various starters to try. For me, the babotie spring rolls was the obvious winner (and points for creativity of re-imagining spring rolls in such a local way!)
with the calamari taking second place.
I found the bruchetta to be a little overpowering though; too many acidic elements in the dish.

For mains I ordered a steak with a mushroom sauce. Wow, you guys, that mushroom sauce 👌😍. Such a weird thing to rave about -but it has to be one of the best I've ever had. Steak was cooked to medium rare as requested- always a good sign when everyone has beautifully cooked steaks! I tasted all of the sides on offer, and you can't go wrong with any of them, but my personal favourites have to be their onion rings and their cauliflower mash.

I also got to taste some of JotterJo and Simone Hasselbach 's shared mains; line fish and ribs. The former fresh and delicious; the latter smothered in the most moreish basting sauce.

When it came time for dessert, I joined in on the sharing train, with 3 of us having the cheesecake, brownies and the churros. Now who says you can't have your cake and eat it too?!🍰😉
My favourite has to be the baked cheesecake. The brownies were delicious, but oh so rich (maybe a good idea if you haven't had starters and a main!)
The churros provided a lighter ,less heavy option. However, I did find the actual churro to be a tad undercooked.

All in all, a fantastic evening with amazing food. Will happily return to the eatery. Oh, and they have a play area for those with tiny humans. Bonus!

Huge thanks to James Hobbs and Nick Mavridis at Zomato for organising this lovely event.

I've been to this restaurant before and I really like the warmth and the way it smells. It's really cosy. It's a really accommodating menu with plenty of safe options.

The restaurant is small enough to ensure that the service is really attentive and on ordinary occasion the kitchen will not make you wait.
It's not necessarily a place to impress some guests
but If you are out looking for a place to grab a something that's going to give you variety and a warm easy evening, I'd definitely say this is it.

Thank you so much to our restaurant hosts and the Zomato team for an equally warm evening!
Simone Hasselbach
What an awesome foodie meetup last night at The Eatery! And what amazing food! My initial visit to The Eatery was when they first opened in wynberg and had the byob concept. I enjoyed myself then and i enjoyed myself even more in their new location. So much more to offer patrons now with heaps more space than before and a kiddies play area!!! Plus plus plus.

Their calamari and chicken wings didn't disappoint but i was once again very impressed with the chilli poppers and my new favourite babotie spring rolls! They are ammmaaazzzzinggg!!!

I had their steak before so was keen to try something else. JotterJo was kind enuf to share ribs and fish between the two of us. The fish was fantastic. Cooked beautifully, flaky and full of flavour. On the fence with the ribs though, mine were a bit tough and dry.

Jo was kind enough yet again to split dessert with Francesca Favero joining in on the sharing. All i can say is that each one was perfection on a plate. I am not a fan of choccie desserts but those brownies were sooo good. Arguably one of the best baked cheesecakes in town and light and fluffy churros to boot!

Rolled outta there again - its definitely a foodie meetup standard.

Have to mention the La Petite Provence red wine - was pretty decent.

Thanks for the invite James Hobbs and Nick Mavridis!!

My first Zomato meet up with great food, wine and company thank you Zomato. We had a platter of starters and I gravitated towards the bobotie spring rolls, calamari and chicken wings which burst with flavour and soon disappeared . I regretted not taking the pork ribs as a main as soon as I tasted the sauce on the ribs, My steak portion was good but unfortunately not well seasoned I wanted to taste some more flavour. The chocolate brownie dessert was spot on in layering, creaminess and the coating of the chocolate sauce. I'd definitely come back for a cosy dinner with my dad or boyfriend especially for those RIBS !
Nicol Miller
Wow! What a great foodie meetup we had! Thanks to Zomato, a few foodies got together last night to wine and dine at The Eatery, and we were treated to a feast. The interior is warm, welcoming and very cosy, and would make for a great meal out, especially for families. To start, we shared platters that included Bobotie springrolls, salt and pepper calamari, bruschetta, bacon wrapped chilli poppers and chicken wings. The chilli poppers were spicy yet extremely tasty, and the calamari was succulent and well seasoned but my favourite was definitely the Bobotie springrolls. Such an awesome twist to a familiar eat. For mains, we had a choice from a few options, but I opted for the BBQ pork ribs, which was by far the best choice. They were well seasoned, juicy and the meat fell off the bone. And if that wasn't enough, we got to choose a dessert(refer to the menu in my images) and I opted for the NY baked cheesecake, which was the perfect way to end off. Thank you to The Eatery Grill and Zomato for organising such an awesome event!
Catherine
Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. I had the chicken salad, which was a generous portion of chicken and sald, and not just a collection of lettuce leaves. The others had burgers and steak, which were quickly demolished.
Good selection of beer on tap and delicious milkshakes (the Wilson's toffee flavour is potent)
Will definitely be back
JotterJo
We can't get enough of this excellent little restaurant in our hood. Every meal has been perfection. From starters to desserts there is such love and care in every plate presented.

This is also where I first feel in love with chilli poppers. Theirs; wrapped in bacon, cannot be beaten.

Another fabulous item is the bobotie spring rolls. Creamy & flavourful bobotie wrapped in crispy, yet delicately thin pastry. Perfection!

I had the chicken livers which were absolutely delicious - tender and pink in the middle and lounging lazily in a rich, creamy, peri peri sauce.

Hubby had the bacon and cheese burger which was a good size portion and their chips are lovely. He also had an oreo milkshake which was scrummylicious.

I had their baked cheesecake for dessert and it blew my mind. The best I've had in a long time!

BigJoe

Second time in a row the food was really terrible and inedible, I will probably never go back. Not sure how they think it is acceptable. Pity the kids like the play area.
Darla Dates
Not bad....not fabulous....but good.

After speaking to 3 waitrons we finally got the front of house to accommodate us. Granted it was for a fully booked outside area but we promised it was just a quick bite before we left for the cricket at Newlands.

Service is erratic, from appearing nervous, uncertain, to friendly, to not listening, to being present then not. All pretty confusing.

I enjoyed my starter peri peri wings and really loved the sweet potato mash but my husbands steak salad was nothing to write home about. It was a steak salad at a hefty price.
.
Enjoyed the chilled vibe though...so maybe we will bring the kids for their happy hour on milkshakes

The manger has no people skills and it's so appalling to see how he shouts for the waiters across the dinning area. Shocking to see that the level of managerial etiquette is so poor at an established restaurant. Definitely my last
Munier Barden
This is our local steakhouse. Been many times since they opened. Always good service and meals. Was rather dissapointed last night when I ordered the prawns. Was nothing like it used to be before yet still the same price. They used to be large prawns..a bed of them with a great smokey sauce. Now they are much smaller ones on a skewer. Not cool at all. I felt cheated!
Julian Springer
Great vibe for a great date! Our waitress (Nicole) was friendly, helpful and attentive. The manager was also ever present to make sure we were doing okay.

My date and I both had the Sir Loin as part of the Monday special, with an added sauce. For the price you are paying, it was outstanding. Steak was cooked to perfection and literally melted in my mouth.

We also ordered the Piggy Poppers as a starter. Probably the best bacon covered Jalapeno poppers i have ever tasted (I have tasted many. It's a thing we do). The no corkage fee also helps balance the price.

Wanted to try somewhere new for supper lastnight so my boyfriend and I decided on The Eatery. We arrived pretty early, around 6, the place wasn't too busy but the staff were busy setting up for the dinner shift which we didn't mind too much. The moment we walked in the alluring smell from the woodfire grill hit us instantly so we had high hopes for the food.

I had a the chicken wings starter, while my boyfriend had a steak. Both were really good. My wings were extra spicy, just the way I like it and the steak was surprisingly tender considering my boyfriend orders it medium-well. My highlight however was dessert. We both had the churros to share. It was to die for, can't wait to go back for more. Price wise, the food is rather expensive for a casual grill.

The set up is decent for the most, during the day there isn't much of a vibe and there were way too many flies inside the restaurant. I'd hope that things are much better later in the evening though. Service was good and our waitress was really friendly and helpful. Overall it wasn't too bad and I wouldn't mind being back in future.
Shelley
The food was tasty, but this place is crazy overpriced for what you get. Our waitress was really great though, her service was perfect. Unfortunately the quality of the food didn't match up to the prices that you are charged.
Ray
Went there for lunch on a weekday, I had the burger and milkshake special, decided to take the cape towner burger and triple chocolate milkshake, the burger is probably one of the best burgers I've had in a really long time and the milkshake is also one of the better tasting shakes I've had. Mom had the lunch special, she chose the sirloin and fries, which she enjoyed and is really good value.. Will definitely be revisiting in the near future.
Wayne De Lange
Certainly good food and don't be mistaken, the wood fired grill angle is a good one, but I think our mates talked it up a bit to us, so I felt ever so slightly let down. The Steak - I had the Argentinian - was average. A good meal for sure, but the prices are quite high, so perhaps our expectations are raised. Ribs particularly expensive to my mind.. But as the waitress declared - 'homemade' & they certainly tasted as much. Not a huge amount of heating going on, for some reason, we also expected something cosier...
What with it being the middle of Winter! We may go again, we may not. Though I'd like to say it will be the former, in which case I'll be trying a burger.
Jessica Stromin
Seriously good steaks here - they make the most of the meat and don't complicate things too much. I had the Sir Loin which was great, simple and tasty. My boyfriend had the El Hipster Loco burger which he loved. Service is friendly, and it's a nice relaxed vibe for a good meal close to home. Keen to go back for one of their shakes!

UPDATE: Came back for a quick weeknight dinner with my mom. She had the Sir Loin this time and I had the Cape Towner burger. All good! It was a Tuesday night so I scored the burger special - R99 for burger, chips and a milkshake. I was super stoked, it's good value. Milkshake was thick and creamy, the best!
Ruby Bunjun
Great food, can get a bit busy though. Had my husband's 30th birthday here and it was fantastic. The staff was super friendly and helpful and went above and beyond. The food was amazing! We haven't had a disappointing meal here! The burger special on Tuesdays is especially good value for money.
Lynn Boffa
Hmm it was ok. The lamb kebab I had was super tough. Took forever to get served & it was so cold outside. The chilli poppers were nice however.
Kirsty Watts
Delicious food accompanied by very friendly staff. The manager was very helpful and informative. One of the best Creme Brûlées I've had in a long time! Do doubt that I will be back! Thanks team 😁
Andrew Treu
This restaurant has become a regular haunt since the closing of their Wynberg branch. They have an excellent special on Tuesdays of a gourmet burger and a milkshake for R99, which never fails to disappoint. The burgers are always perfect and the milkshakes are wonderful. The staff is friendly and efficient and help to create a good laid back dining experience. The only thing I don't like is the outside deck area: in the evenings it feels a little stark and cold. My advice is to reserve a table inside, and you will need to make a reservation as it is always buzzing.
Shnapple
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and deliciously made food coupled with tasty milkshakes all make for a worthwhile experience. Definitely recommende!

Ambiance: 3.5/5
Food: 3.5/5

What a great neighborhood restaurant. They have an outside area at the back which is protected from the wind and the noises of the road. The flavor combinations are interesting and I must say I appreciated the some of the names. Our waitress (Nicole) was awesome. She was very attentive and fun and she knew a lot about the ingredients in the different meals. Definitely a new favorite meeting place.
Claire Forbes
A great eatery! Friendly waitress, recently opened so everything is still fresh and new... Lovely vibe and atmosphere. Start with the baby squid... You won't be sorry!
Mary-Anne Williams Wakefield
Went in about 9pm and I thought they would be closed or orders for the kitchen would be closed but there weren't, which was a good start.
For starters we had the piggy poppers which were really yum and the peri peri wings also good.
For mains we had the BBQ belly ribs, also really good with chips, the chips were wow, must be hand made, and my Husband had the 500g Sirloin with onion rings and garlic and Parmesan sauce. His test is always how his meat is done and rare it was, so it was perfect. I did a taste test and it was really great, the spice/flavor alone on the steak was great and the sauce was an added extra.
I would definitely recommend them.
My pics aren't great, but you get the just of it.
Russell Wilmot
We were pleasantly surprised by The Eatery, awesome freshly made food presented very well. Staff are friendly and service orientated.
We will definitely come back to have more than just a burger.
Bryan Vally
Great to see more local options appearing in the southern suburbs! The Eatery provides a good alternative to Col Cacchio as solid - if unspectacular - take-away or "quick" dining. The service seemed a little inefficient for the number of staff, although the little venue was full for most of the evening. The food was good - especially the Calamari starter! - and whilst I would have no problem going back, I certainly would not rush either. Going for any of their specials would, however, make me a happy customer as the value for money would be more in line.
Dustin Johnson
Possibly the best swordfish I've ever tasted. Tender, juicy and flavorful. Only thing better is the service we received from our attentive waitress, absolutely amazing!
Claudia Penny
This is a newish little gem in Belvedere Square. The burgers are delicious, especially when accompanied by a milkshake for their special. I love the fact that ostrich is a burger option. BYOB.
Meegan Kieffer
Ordered my favourite Argentinian with chimichurri with a side of cauli mash (the best in town). My hubby ordered the pork belly ribs which he allowed me to taste and it was yum. Tender and juicy. Food and service always top notch!

I like the vibe of this place, I visited it today for lunch.

Their mocha was delicious and they use actual dark chocolate pieces to make it. It was a lovely treat. For lunch, I had the grilled cheese sandwich with chips. By far the best grilled cheese sandwich I've had. Some truffle oil would have made it even more divine. My boyfriend had the fillet with grilled seasonal vegetables which he really enjoy but the real winner was the roast garlic and parmesan cheese sauce.

The waiters are very friendly and attentive. The prices are also very reasonable and affordable.

We finally got our butts into gear and visited the new Eatery in Claremont and it was really, very lovely. Great outside decking area for the warmer evenings, fantastic vibe, delicious steak, chips and salad with garlic sauce and to top it all off – awesome specials.

We ordered the sirloin steak special – R99 for steak and a side and we ended with a portion of crispy churros with warm chocolate sauce… oh my WORD! So good!

Love that it is right down the road from home. New local for SURE.

Oh – you can take your own booze with you (no charge)

Walked in without a booking, shock horror disgust! Got the last table. Ordered some lamb dish. Started eating and the world melted away. Jokes aside, fantastic food, prepared to perfection. Be aware, no liquor licence at that time.

I have eaten at The Eatery about 25 times and have always enjoyed myself. The service is really good, the manager (Richard) looks after his customers and the food is always delicious. If you're looking for a relaxed meal in the Southern Suburbs, I'd recommend this place.

We went for a quick mid week meal. The restaurant is cosy and the service is good. We both had burgers, which were tasty, but my biggest compliment goes to the caulimash. My oh my, that got that one right! Creamy and piping hot, with just the right amount of seasoning. My son also enjoyed one of their delicious milkshakes - a meal in itself!
Klutz In The Kitchen
The Klutz in the Kitchen's Straight Talkin' No Punches Pulled Restaurant, Bistro, Cafe, Pub, Food Truck, Street Food & Take Away Grub n' Cooking Maguffta Reviews

We visited the Eatery around a month ago prior to falling rather ill with this blerry awful flu virus that’s been doing the rounds. It was a spur of the moment thing as the Klutz in the Kitchen really felt like a good burger. I’ve wanted to visit the place for a while as we were itching to find out more about this wood fired grill venue.

After some difficulty in locating the place, not well lit or signposted in the parking area, was given a warm friendly greeting in the bustling little dining room. Having had time to look around the place and asked what wood they used, rooikranz was told by the friendly and accommodating manager Richard. He also added that their patio dining area would be opening soon thus easing the congestion problems. They were pretty full and said that we’ll wait for a table, didn’t wait too long and finally was seated at a large table for six which became available. I said should they have any other folks who needed to be seated we did not mind them joining our table.

Ordered something to drink and checked out the very simple menu typical of the average steakhouse. Now we were there for a burger, but on seeing the M a se Bobotie Rolls on the starters side of the rather grubby menu, which was a unexpected surprise, so naturally placed an order for it being a major bobotie nut. The burger ordered was the Cape Towner, which came with Emmentaler cheese, Bacon, Avocado and BBQ basting sauce. The sides were hand cut fresh chips and onion rings which the Klutz was happy to see, none of those horrible frozen things one sees all to often these days.

The starters arrived and looked really delish, then a problem arose. The menu stated sweet spicy bobotie wrapped in crispy pastry, oops, pastry is was not but rather samosa wrappers, which were hard to bite into, literally a tough nut to crack. Once we managed to chip through the outer covering the bobotie was very nice and tasty .The second disappointment it was served with Mrs Balls peach Chutney rather that an Eatery made one.

The burger arrived, looking very good, but sadly another disappointment was the wooden board it was served on, knife cuts and all. The chips can in a separate side bowl, again was disappointed, as they were very greasy and quite sloppy. I believe that the oil temperature was wrong and somewhat old too, which is the cause of this problem. The burger was tender, but was heavily over seasoned with coriander, which killed the beef flavour of the meal. Don't know why chefs have to do this, keep it simple all that is needed id a little salt and pepper in the burger mix. The coffee after the meal was acceptable. The dessert selection was very minimal and was not inspired at all, the menus prices were very reasonable and ideal for the family.

All in all it was a really disappointing first visit despite the warm and friendly atmosphere. The Klutz did, as he usually does tell the management of the concerns and was assured that all problems would be looked into.

The Klutz will visit The Eatery again in the near future to see if those few problems were attended to.

The Klutz in the Kitchen’s Grub Rating for the Eatery
★★★ = Middling, tolerable, almost acceptable to adequate, could be still better

Popped in here for lunch last Sunday as we live down the road & had wanted to give it a try. We ordered the poppers, chicken wings and the Brie & fig burger. The poppers & wings were very tasty (albeit the poppers being slightly overpriced) but the burger was a bit of a let down. The beef patty was lovely & juicy but the Brie & figs were quite scarce & couldn't really be tasted. I feel that if ingredients are listed as the main components then they should be prominent.

Waitress was very friendly & service was great. Nice setting. A little pricy overall.
This was one place we had been saying we were going to give a try and it had been long over due! Especially being steak lovers and all! Oh and we love down the road too!

Fantastic service, the waitresses are polite and very helpful! We had a few glasses of our vino (its BYOB) before we had a look at the menu and decided to have the Sir Loin (we love our sirloin). It was a great choice, I absolutely loved my steak and so did my boyfriend! Except my sauce I really did not enjoy (it was the pepper sauce), it probably was the worst pepper sauce I had ever had! And I am a pepper sauce fan! Thankfully I had the option of pouring it on my steak, so I didn’t have it. My boyfriends sauce, however, the mushroom, he enjoyed thoroughly! Great evening! They don’t have their liquor licence yet, so you are welcome to bring your own booze! Quite awesome!

The wife and I popped in for lunch. The place was empty though they did confirm that they are fully booked every evening.

We both ordered the Ranchero burger and Triple Chocolate Dream milkshakes. It came with serving of fries and 3 large onion rings. For R89, this is a great deal.

The burger patty was juicy and very well prepared. I really enjoyed the relish as well. I could have done without the onion ring batter, but maybe because I hadn't experienced that type of spicy batter before.

The milkshake was delicious and thick, though, due to the thickness they may want to get more heavy duty straws.

I very good experience.

Small and cosy so make sure you make a booking to avoid disappointment. Great steaks. Pork belly ribs lacked the smoky flavour that I was expecting. Roasted veg was delicious. Cheese cake R42 is good but it doesn't beat Hello Sailor's in Observatory. 400 gram sirloin with mushroom sauce and chips R169. Chips were oily so this could be improved. - Lamb espetada was done perfectly - melts in your mouth served -with chimchiri sauce which was delicious. Coke in the bottle -yay.... Total bill for 3 adults R589 excl tip. Warm welcome as you arrive - friendly staff and really good service. Look out for their weekday specials. Tuesdays burger and milkshake deal at R89 sounds like a good option for date night.

What can I say. Discovered this place by accident but I'm addicted. Best chilli poppers in Cape Town. What it lacks in floor space it makes up for in charm and taste. My life goal is now to try every item on their menu. Simply an amazing place.

Went with 10 of us on a special digs dinner with the girls in our lives. Brilliant burgers and milkshakes on the tuesday night special and to top it all off we were allowed to bring our own cooler box of booze to keep the thirst adrift!
