Review Starlings Cafe - Claremont

A nice place with an easy menu . Please not that they don’t serve alcohol heheh ..was hoping for a mimosa with my meal . The food was nice and the waiters were good . One thing they could improve is to laminate their paper menus so that it doesn’t get more dirty

Very cosy. The outdoor area is very relaxing with a mixture of sun & shade streaming through the trees. Indeed a charming place to meet for a cuppa & a treat. The salmon quiche and salad was amazing. Thanks to our server who was very friendly and so patient with us. I definitely recommend a visit.

Gorgeous garden area making for a wonderful little escape in suburbia. Good and coffee where great. There's no signage on the road so you going to need Google maps to find it. Definitely planning on visiting through summer.

Life is better with coffee and breakfast under the trees at Starlings. This small restaurant is exceptionally popular, so don't be too surprised if there isn't immediately a table available. Good news is... it's worth it. Their aromatic brews and concise, expertly prepared breakfast menu has, in all our visits, never been a disappointment.

A secret garden with an idyllic setting and good food. If nobody told you about the place, you might not even see it. Perfect for a tea time treat or incognito rendezvous.

You can park at the entrance of the restaurant, but it's narrow and there's not enough space, so park by the side of the road. The food is delicious and plentiful. The coffee was good, too. The staff were kind. The bathroom was clean, too. There is also an outdoor table. All right, but there may be bird poo on the chair, so please take a good look.🤪 It's a good restaurant I want to visit again. There is no play area for children.

An old favourite, a little gem in the suburbs with the shaded outside area offering the correct mix of dappled shade and sunshine, while you sip of your drinks and enjoy well prepared light meals. Great breakfasts and lunches - generously portioned. Service is friendly and never disappoints.

This place is 10/10. One of the best burgers I have ever had and the side salad was amazing. It is a great setting, good service, and great value. Highly recommended,

The service was not so good, the latte was amazing, the food was ok I different like the sauce though smelled too much of eggs ,I think they should musk it with some vanilla extract, it would be perfect. The atmosphere is great when you are outside, but inside is too much traffic 😑.. but it's a cool spot I'd definitely come back to try the brunch menu🥰😱

Well done to the owner and team. They’ve done a great job, customer service is awesome, a little bit slow. The look and feel is fresh. The quality of food was great. The Wi-Fi wasn’t amazing. It’s not kid friendly. Don’t know if it’s dog friendly.

Absolutely beautiful little hidden Gem. It feels like you are sitting in an enchanted forest. They were very accommodating to my diabetic needs. They didn't have low carb toast but my breakfast wasn't lacking at all. It was perfect.

Love, love, love the garden setting at Starlings! Great coffee, smoothies, and baked treats 😁 Winter months spent indoors while the fire is going is also amazing! Attached are a few pics I took while building an app-based marketing platform for coffee shops!
Mpho Makhetha
A beautiful hidden gem, started off with the berry smoothie, it was super thick and delicious and I ordered the French toast- there were two options, I ordered the one that comes with bacon and banana, and then my friend ordered the eggs Benedict with bacon, absolutely scrumptious but the service was okay a 2,5/5.
Dan Stillerman
Great experience all round! Loved the outdoor section under trees. Food was fresh and delicious. Great service. Great coffee. Will be back soon for the carrot cake! Back in April 2023 - even better than I remember it! Had the chicken wrap - world class.
Camila Beatriz
The atmosphere is amazing. I could listen to the birds tweeting and the environment is really calm and cosy. The service was absolutely brilliant. I ate French toast with blueberry compote and it was delectable. In my view the food was good value for money. I really was impressed with the restroom because it is completely quirky. The decor is spectacular.

Lovely vibe and great staff! Stopped by for a quick coffee catch-up with a friend and ended up having a super yummy chicken mayo toastie too. Perfectly cozy and a good spot for remote workers or for a quick business coffee. Highly recommend!

One of my favourite places for breakfast or lunch in Cape Town. Friendly staff, fresh tasty healthy wholesome meal options - the beautiful garden and ecclectic decor makes it a real hidden gem in the ‘burbs. I always love the flowers in the bathroom...
Nadine Carroll
I love everything about this quaint and vibrant café. Excellent food - the Salmon Eggs Benedict were to die for! Friendly service in a lovely outdoor setting. We waited for a short while for a table and were given freshly squeezed orange juice - so yum! Will be back to try lunch for sure. Food is fresh, tasty and homemade. I recommend this place to everyone, whether you just want a coffee and cake, breakfast or lunch.

I usually don´t have favorites. But Cafe Starlings is my absolute favorite breakfast spot. The service is outstanding, not only friendly but also much less robotic than elsewhere, warm and genuine. The quality of the food is consistent, the menu is short and sweet, every meal is a winner! Not only are the flavors on point (you have to taste the livers), these guys sell truly free-range eggs and real bacon without any antibiotics...Excellent coffee from Origin! There´s so much love at Cafe Starlings. Must visit, a true gem <3

Most disappointing experience and frankly shocking. 2 of us for lunch at 2.15 pm. On arrival waited until we called a waiter. Lots of free tables and several waiters moving around. Ordered a glass of water and a coke. After 2 attempts and calls for our drinks they came. Small water in glass. Coke in can, no glass or straw. Requested a glass. Then told no wraps, no salmon, no aubergine so chose a curry and a sandwich. Saw several people flagging down waiters and it was quite weird. Lots of excuses continued. Meal took ages to come. Ordered 2 cheese cake to take away. Bill came without the cheesecake on the bill. Requested it to be added as it WOULD create another delay. Paid and then walked to exit to pick up cheese cake on way out.............still packaging and waiter at kitchen was being delayed by a kitchen staff member cutting the cheesecake.............at least 6 mins ? whilst we overheard a dissatisfied customer talking to owner. Sad considering my guest was new to CT and said she had hoped to bring her daughters here. What has gone wrong here ???????
Nick Palmer
Extremely disappointed with the attitude this morning. I was there at 7:30 for a quick breakfast in the garden. I was told that I couldn't take a table outside and had to sit on a group table inside. There were maybe 15 customers in the place and loads of tables available. I lived across the road until a few months ago for years. Being treated in that way is completely unacceptable. Just gives the idea that the owner is purely money grabbing. I would have been gone in 30 mins, now I'm gone forever!!

We were so excited to finally eat here but were so disappointed by both the food and the service! We arrived at 12h20 and after being seated were told we needed to wait before we could order while they finished their breakfast orders. The burgers were dry and overcooked and while taking a bite a piece of mouldy cheese happened to fall off onto the plate. Not very appetising! After informing a staff member about this were told that cheese can get mouldy and they just forgot to cut it off. For me this is not a good enough response. Very disappointing.

We have been going to Starlings almost every weekend for breakfast for about 4 years and we absolutely love it. Consistently good food, friendly hospitable service and a beautiful setting. It's a busy place on Saturdays (for good reason) but they run a tight ship.
Lisa Fullstone
My Favourite Hidden Gem. I am amazed at the consistently excellent coffee, food and service. I think it is a real feat to be so consistent. My favourite breakfast is the veg omelette and the homebaked wholewheat bread. A friend and I shared a chopped salad and risotto for lunch on Saturday - a winning combination. Generous portions and the freshest ingredients, keeps me happy and coming back for more.
Linda Thompson
Best breakfast in the Southern Suburbs. Thank you for the amazing food, friendly service and beautiful setting. A gem in Cape Town.
Bonny Johnson
It is certainly one of my favourite places, with amazing food and precious tranquil space. I do wish inside during winter time was a little bigger...
Wendy Daffarn
Outstanding - 10/10! Delicious food, excellent coffee, friendly service, great vibe!
Clint Kildaire
A revelation. From street level you would not recognise this coffee shop.Exceptional breakfast abandoned coffee.Hidden away little gem.
Xabiso Damba
It was actually my first time there but all I can say there will be next time....The breakfast menu OMG it took me a little while to make up my mind ...I am so loving the garden set up.
Leston Sylvester
Good food. Excellent service. Amazing atmosphere. I would recommend this gem to everyone!
Annette Miller
My all-time favourite coffee shop and second home. The cosy fire and warm welcome, pitched with great service and food, make it my "go to" and "return to" place
Ian Bean MacLean
Had an incredible breakfast here on Sunday.. staff accommodated unexpected extra guests arriving during peak time with ease, decently priced delicious food, generous portions, and fantastic coffee, will be back!
Rolene Laing Ressel
Was there this morning for the first time and will definitely be back soon !
Brandon Holmes
Best eggs benny I've ever had, and have never had anything else based on that fact. Great coffee.
Rene Gilham
I miss you guys sooo much during the lock down...

I visited this place for my sisters birthday about two weeks ago. We mananged to snag a seat at the back in their courtyard which is absolutely beautiful. <br/><br/>The ambience is lovely, as it is small, quaint and rather close to where I stay. It's perfect for breakfast and coffee. We went for lunch and I had the chicken and pesto wrap. It was delicious but quite dry. My father had the meatballs with cous cous, which my father said was delicious. I think it may have needed a bit more sauce too. My mom and sister enjoyed their open sandwiches which came with salmon and poached eggs. <br/><br/>All in all it was a pleasant experience but in my view, their food was overpriced for the portion sizes. I would definitely come back though but to try their breakfasts. They also have vegan options
Amber Kneisel
Starlings used to be one of my favourite breakfast spots. A magical hidden gem behind the hedge :). I went there this week on a Friday morning and the service I received was quite disappointing . We waited 30 min or longer for just two coffees, while many new customers around us received their drinks AND meals in that time. <br/><br/>Their price range for their breakfast menu is quite limited and rather expensive, there aren’t any “affordable” breakfast options. I suppose their menu is targeting their up-market southern suburban clientele, and not my freelancer budget / students in the area/90% of the South African population. <br/><br/>The atmosphere is cheery and enchanting with their garden setting, food definitely a win (just horribly pricey), but their service could definitely use some work.
Dana De Barros
Starlings Cafe is one of those places that you just think about and go &quot;ah&quot;..I go there every few months and every time it just keeps getting betterAbsolutely love it!
UThingolwenkosazana
What a dainty cafe!. Absolutely loved it. Had chicken livers with poached eggs. The chicken livers were juicy and tasty. Their portion was also quite generous and I enjoyed my very berry tea!. Can’t wait to visit again. The fire place and blankies were an amazing EXTRA!.
Damian
What an amazing hidden gem! Excellent service, good coffee and the most amazing chicken livers in all the land! One of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots, no doubt. Parking usually sucks, and have to wait for a table most times, but so well worth it!
Eleanora Bresler
I had been so looking forward to visiting this restaurant but was quite disappointed. It was very busy and vibey but unfortunately the outside area was completely full which may have made the difference. The staff were very pleasant. The biggest shock was the price of the food. Really nothing out of the ordinary as we looked around at orders being brought out but a lot pricier than other places.  The cakes on offer were also not inspiring so we decided not to order food. We ordered a coffee and a smoothie. I was shocked at the price for the smoothie and for what it was. Just a sour berry thick something....
Mbo Sibanda
I enjoyed the wonderful setting of this place. I enjoyed the freshness of the tea and the breakfast was delectable. I ordered the French toast <br/>With bacon, banana & cinnamon syrup. The banana & cinnamon compensated the French Toast perfectly.
Jacinta Hadskins
Slightly cramped, but good service. Lovely place for a lunch date or tea and cake with a friend or loved one 😊 great vibe, just a limited on space. Quite a busy place despite being quite hidden.
Jessy Da Silva
Lovely morning at Starlings cafe sitting in the garden having breakfast! I had a cappuccino and my husband green tea. We had the poached eggs with parmesan and pesto and the French toast with banana and bacon to share, the food was tasty and delicious! I love the decor and service was great!
Nati Celliers
I really love the atmosphere here, it’s just beautiful to sit and have coffee... that’s all you should do. <br/><br/>I wasn’t impressed with their pesto scramble with Parmesan? The waiter didn’t ask how I liked my eggs, but the description said scramble... and I got 2 very under cooked poached eggs. Personally runny yokes are nauseating. Also, this is a pretty sad site for a breakfast your paying R80 for. <br/><br/>Will still go back, for coffee and atmosphere. But food is way too expensive.
Nazneen Ahmed
I’ve driven past Starlings so many times, without realizing that is was such a cute little breakfast spot! <br/><br/>The menu isn’t too big. I ordered avo toast with pesto, which is just that: toast with avo, pesto, grilled Rosa tomatoes and cream cheese on the side. <br/><br/>I like the spot, just wish the breakfast was a bit better and more variety.
Grant
We had breakfast at Starlings - tasty food and great coffee. I had booked a day in advance, asking for a “cozy corner” table. Unfortunately, on a cold and windy day, we were given a table next to the outside door, which the waitrons needed to go in and out of. fair enough, yet over and over again - and despite request- they would not close it, leaving us to the chilly draft.
Chris De Klerk
Having waited 1hr30 for food, it arrived cold, with no explanation for the wait and very poor service. <br/>Usually enjoy starlings, but not this time.
Kaitlyn Williams
Really cool concept, like the ambiance. Food was tasty and a really large portion. I have a chicken and basil pesto wrap with a delicous dipping sauce. They were quite busy around the time we came (lunch) so was quite disappointed that they ran out of their freshly pressed juice. I was a bit confused about who our waiter was since it seemed no one had a specific table and that made it difficult to get our order through as we were overlooked quite a few times.
Candice Hemingway
Absolute treat of a place. Cannot fault anything. Food was perfect, service was impeccable and the venue is absolutely exquisite. My grand vegan meal was absolutely delicious. My eggs Benedict was delightful. Can highly recommend x
Andile
A fav!<br/>Other than being super busy, rightfully so, I cannot fault Starlings on anything. In the Summer you sit in the garden under a pear tree enjoying your meal, once an actual pear fell into our food, it doesn’t get more natural than that
Gemma Scholtz
Absolutely delicious food, cosy atmosphere and lovely staff. Had the vegetable tart and it was divine. Cheese cake also to die for however a bit over priced I’d say... apparently the eggs Benedict is like no other, looking forward to trying it 🙌
Melanie Du Toit
What a cute spot! I'd been wanting to come here for quite some time as I'd always heard there was this secret garden cafe in the SoBurbs and I finally got my chance a few weeks ago. Theodora Lee and I took our pooches for their first meet-and-greet and decided Starlings would be the venue. We got a really lovely spot outside under the trees, ordered juice and brekkie (eggs benedict for me) and enjoyed the convivial atmosphere. Can highly recommend this place and their staff!
Sibyl Wong
Am told that there is a hidden gem, turns out that this is a very popular cafe, hardly get any parking and seat. Mince curry on toast, what a heaven bite. #mocha is a bit petite portion though... @ Starlings Cafe
Mukhtar Dharsey
So didn’t have the best experience at starlings. Service was not that great. Waiter didn’t know some things we asked and also gave the wrong tea which I ordered. Ordered the salmon scrambled egg for dad and vegetable scrambled egg for myself. Vegetable scrambled egg was very watery and the Swiss chard included was chewy and tough. Salmon scrambled egg was rubbery and salmon was old. I did however provide the feedback to management who managed the situation effectively. Pity, the setting and decor was really nice.
Emma Divaris
A little hidden gem behind the hedge! Love their food and hot drinks, and love the quaint garden setting even more. It's a perfect spot for breakfast or lunch - and they have something tasty for everyone. Service can be on the slower side but it is quite a relaxed space, and there are definitely worse places to be waiting for food!
Nicholas_Jon_D
Absolutely love this place. Such great food and a lovely atmosphere, which is why getting a table can be super tricky, but well worth the wait.
Colleen Kalimba
Came for a brunch today and loved it. Very quaint and rustic with a nice atmosphere. Our waiter was nice and the food was great. I had the courgette wrap which was delectable. All the ingredients taste very fresh and the wraps taste & feel like a hybrid between wrap and roti. The berry smoothie was decent, although definitely overpriced in my opinion. The iced coffee was delicious though.
Nina Formanek
I love the garden atmosphere at Starlings Cafe. They make a goooood Eggs Benedict & the coffee is great too. A perfect Saturday morning breakfast treat!
Fazlur Phillips
Good food. Great venue. Amazing ambiance. The cheese cake was amazing. Service was slightly inattentive, the turnaround time for food arrival was slow.
Michael Cheney
My absolute favorite place to go for breakfast, a light lunch or an incredible cup of coffee. The staff are great and see to it that you're checked in with often enough that you aren't waiting. The coffee is the highlight for me but anything in their menu is delicious. I am particularly partial to their wraps for a light lunch. This is a good spot to get some work done away from the office, with free wifi and a beautiful garden to either look out onto or sit In. The decor with the glass wall panels and full wall mirror add a sense of openness to what could feel like a very cramped space. Always busy anytime I go it's worthwhile booking a table if you want a seat overlooking the garden.
Jessica Semple
I've been here once for a late breakfast with a friend. You'll want to make a reservation as it gets insanely busy. The staff are very friendly but as it is so chaotic they were a bit sloppy (e.g. forgot to bring us cutlery). The coffee was delicious. I highly recommend the lentil breakfast bowl. Stay away from the granola with yoghurt and fruit: it really wasn't that great at all. Lovely atmosphere though and the decor gets a 10/10.
Tim Nel
Beautiful little restaurant, brilliant service, simple but delicious menu, had a great experience every time I’ve been here. Highly recommend it.
Sarah Herrington
Almost every aspect of this beautiful café makes it well worth a visit. The outside sitting area is highly recommended (weather-permitting), as you are surrounded and sheltered by luscious vegetation, giving a lovely 'secret garden' atmosphere. On cold Winter days, you can cosy up inside with blankets and the heater on. The food and coffees literally come within minutes of ordering, and the service is impeccable. <br/><br/>The highlight, though, is the delicious and fresh food - the eggs Benedicts are tasty, beautifully presented, and not too rich, with the roasted tomatoes being a particularly flavorful addition. Their berry compote French toast is also divine, but very sweet and rich - only order it if you have a big sweet tooth. This is by far my favourite place to come on Saturday mornings to start my weekend off the right way. I’ve also recently tried their lunch menu - the walnut and mushroom tartine was so flavourful! I did feel like their lunch portions were much less generous than their breakfast ones, however.
Ayabulea Tutuse
They have a lovely outdoor setting. And food delicious. But they don't have a comprehensive beverage list and sometimes things turn out to be pricey.
Chad Marks
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in all of Cape Town, situated just a stones throw away from home. This place has it all, quaint decor, wonderful atmosphere and excellent food as well. Nevermind boasting the best brownies I have had yet. All in all, one of my personal favourites and I will always come back
D
Came here after a recommendation by a friend. Had to follow the sound of clinking cutlery as there is no sign indicating the cafe. Love the homey feel of the place. Had a caffe latte and their herbed scrambled egg with salmon which was alright. I initially wanted the eggs Benedict but they had run out of hollandaise sauce. I will try their breakfast menu again and see what else they have to offer.
Lauren Niekerk
Starlings is one of my favorite breakfast spots in the Southern suburbs! It's hidden behind a hedge in Belvedere road and street parking is a bit of an issue, but the food here is great so it's worth the mission to find it! <br/><br/>My go-to and favorite breakfast dish of theirs is the eggs on toast with salmon and hollandaise sauce. The portion/size is great and the sauce that they drench it in is spot-on! I also make it a point to check out the cakes and pastries and take some home as a treat before I leave. <br/><br/>The outdoor garden setting is lovely, tranquil and SO relaxing. I've been here many times and have never had an issue with service - the servers are friendly and (in my opinion) the timing is good considering how packed the place gets. On weekends especially, there is always a queue so get there early and try to stay patient as you wait. And once you've got a table, sit back and enjoy the sunshine with good company and good food!
Supervundu
The menu is alright - often have the mince and eggs for breakfast. Good coffee and cakes. Atmosphere is alright, but it's a bit of a nightmare getting a table for weekend breakfast (go early). Pricey too, but the ingredients are all organic and locally sourced.
Tupac Shakur
Best spot to eat in the Southern Suburbs! From breakfast to lunch everything is perfect! Beautiful decor and garden area. Always will come back to this place!
Emmerentia Du Plessis
Lunch with Shalina :)<br/>Hidden gem in Claremont, you'll walk past it without knowing it.<br/>Great selection of lunch times treats, will definitely be back to try the legendary breakfasts!<br/>We had flat whites, the aubergine bake and Orange cake (which is so big, you have to share). Was kinda bummed we missed the cheesecake which was only brought out to the dessert counter as we were leaving.
Sara Lohmaier
Love love love.<br/><br/>We ended up here after asking google for breakfast spots close to us. Starlings was in walking distance, and I had seen some good reviews.<br/><br/>We took a walk and walked right past this restaurant twice, before realizing it was in a house.<br/><br/>It is a very quirky little spot with mismatched furniture and colourful coffee cups. We sat in the garden which was really lovely.<br/><br/>I said I wanted poached eggs with salmon, and while I was in the loo my friend told my boyfriend that's what florentine meant. I got back and they had ordered for me, when the food arrived my "salmon" was kind of green and spinachy. We all had a good laugh. I stole a piece of bacon from a friends plate, but wasn't at all sad about the lack of salmon with my eggs, the florentine was delicious!<br/><br/>They also have a beautiful display case of cakes, which I didn't taste but they totally look lie they're worth another visit.
Gina Botha
I always enjoy visiting Starlings. Food is always very good and the sweet treats are to die for! Staff are friendly. Service is good. Atmosphere is very nice and cosy.
Casey Lange
With an outside area from Alice in Wonderland, amazing service and fantastic food, Starlings whisked my wife and I away on a fantastic journey.
Claire Victoria Henderson
I didn't even know this amazing little spot existed until I took my better half there for a meeting. Such a cute little cafe serving up tea in delightful metal pots and their coffee has amazing artwork. We never ate, but their menu looks absolutely amazing and the aroma in the cafe was delightful. We will be back to eat very soon!
Lucy McGhie
Very disappointed! Waiter wasn't very interested in us didn't even greet us and sort of shrugged us off, luckily we got a new waiter and kind of made up for it but forgot my friends water but brought my drink🙄 I was also quite disappointed that they had run out of juices and had limited cake selections it wasn't even the end of the day it was a perfect time for some tea and cake.<br/>I had the brownie and it was very delicious but disappointed in the service <br/>Love the area and the vibe of the restaurant but really need to work on hiring friendly waiters
Claire Atkinson
Absolutely wonderful place! Such a quaint setting with a very laid back atmosphere. It was so busy we had to wait for a table. It was definitely worth it though, and while we waited we were given the most delicious complimentary green juice. This is going to be my new Sunday brunch place. <br/>I highly recommend the eggs Benedict. 7/5

Tried breakfast at starlings in claremont. Nice and cosy on this monday morning. Service always friendly. Manager/ owner always welcoming. Had poached eggs with basil pesto and a cappuccino. I always find it strange that the waiter is only able to bring one cup at a time. Is it too difficult to carry 2? By the time mine came wifey had finished hers. Service does need attention. Food always good

Since my original review I have been back to Starlings Cafè. I didn’t really enjoy it the first time around but my friend wanted to try it. <br/><br/>Wow... was I surprised! The welcome was super friendly and the service was attentive and efficient. The quality of the food was superb and the portions absolutely perfectly sized. <br/><br/>I’m happy to report, that I can now understand exactly why this business is so popular. I’m changing my 2* rating to a very positive 5*

As someone who is forever on the hunt for the perfect burger, this one from @starlingscafe was one of the best. A simple beef burger with aioli, cheddar and pickles, all of the ingredients are of such good quality that this classic take leaves you wanting nothing more.
Hamish McCready
Tranquil outdoor seating area with lovely trees and plants. Hot drinks served in la creuset crockery is a very nice touch. Service was a little bit slow and our drinks did not all arrive simultaneously as one would expect at a table of only four.
Nicola Slyper
A friend suggested we come here for a little lunch during the week. We sat outside, it was lovely. The staff were friendly and the service was quick. <br/><br/>I ordered the chicken wrap, it was tasty but quite rich. It was a little oily as well. My friend enjoyed the salmon tart, the crust was very soft which was a bit unfortunate. I'd like to try their breakfasts next time.
Fatima Abrahams
I finally got a chance to visit this picturesque spot for breakfast! The setting is very simple and so stunning. We had to wait a while (approximately 20mins) for a table but I didn't mind too much. We were eventually seated at a cosy spot outside under a beautiful tree, it was a bit breezy but we received blankets from the waiters. For breakfast I had the poached eggs with, basil pesto, parmesan and rye toast which was delicious. I highly recommend it for pesto lovers . My other suggestions would be the eggs benedict or the herbed omlette with salmon. To drink, I had a Mocah which was lovely too. My only criticism is that if you don't like waiting avoid peak times such as 10am on a Saturday morning.
Gabriel Stein
Awesome atmosphere and amazing staff. <br/><br/>Although the portion of the salad was amazing, u felt that my burger was pathetic, especially for the price I paid, R110!!! That's more than any gourmet burger place I know, and all it had was cheese and bacon. It was tasty though. <br/><br/>Im rather upset I didn't come for breakfast as I've heard that's amazing, also I should've tried their cake or dessert, but that's for next time!
Mishka Latib
Favourite breakfast spot in the Southern Suburbs. Lovely environment, great food, and great service. Sometimes they can be a little full, but I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for a table. Go through to the back and sit outside- it's lovely!
Jenna Rodd
My absolute favourite breakfast spot in Cape Town. The poached eggs are always perfection. Sitting out in the garden is always such a treat too. It feels homely and is small and quaint. The coffee here is also some of the best I've ever had. There is a great attention to detail in the food and decor in this restaurant. The fresh juices are also a must-try!
Janine Thomas
My favorite breakfast joint. The vibe is truly refreshing and something you want to be around early in the morning. The food is always timely and tastes magnificent. I would order any of the options on the menu
Elzanne
Fantastic. Never knew it was there. Fantastic eggs Benedict. Good service, lovely decor and ambiance. Couldn't get a seat in the garden so will be back to try lunch too and check it out. <br/>
Popsi
So good! Yummy food, lots of veggie vibes, lots of goodness. Beautiful garden and friendly service. So much still to try on the menu. I'll be back.
Ruqaya Gabier
Always great service and yummy treats. my favourite is the almond flourless cake. Hidden gem 😊 can be quite full at times and you have to be put on the waiting list. But there's a cute waiting area with seating and the manager always gives on updates the waiting time. Today we were offered to try some of the new juices while we waited (for +- 10 min). Absolutely love this place!
Monique
The breakfasts are average but cost more than average. Breakfast for 2 people including a tip came to R410. Service was also slow and inattentive. Not worth it. There are many other breakfast venue choices that offer far better breakfasts and good value.
Gert Hofhuis
A 20 minute wait to get a table at 11:00 am mid week tells it all!! And the fact that there's no signage outside! From the welcoming FOH to the top-class attentive service and the exceptional quality of fare and value for money, this is a definite favourite. Located in an old residence, this beautifully restored and furnished building is complimented by a tranquil garden setting. The numerous variations of egg dishes on the breakfast menu were all excellent, and the poached eggs were prepared to perfection. Will we be back - for sure!!
Shaheel Garach
Fantastic atmosphere and great vibe. Loved the food, service was excellent as well. A definite must for anyone who is in Claremont, Cape Town
Dayne Williams
Went for breakfast this morning after looking on zomato for a nice place to try. Great coffee, rocking eggs Benedict, top notch French toast and friendly and efficient service. Also really beautiful and unique atmosphere and garden. Quite possibly my new favourite breakfast place.
Kgothatso
"Awesomeness" just describes this place.....definitely a hidden Gem, when u come to CT please make sure u stop by. Food is yummmmyyyyy!!!! Service is the best ever.....very attentive from waiters to managers!!! Tx to my cousin who brought me here.....my 2nd time in one week!!!!
Hano Jordaan
Great food, attentive and friendly staff, off street parking, awesome place to visit! This is truly the hidden gem it was portrayed as and I'm glad I found it.
Tanweer
Extremely cute hidden gem. The restaurant itself and garden is beautifully maintained and has a real summer feel to it. The food is more expensive than your average café and does not entirely warrant the prices. Friendly service from the manager and staff.
Andrew Raeburn
A hidden Breakfast Gem! A real serendipity in a low frequency road of franchises and small industry. It's definitely a leafy suburbs housewife haunt, where family gossip and first world problems ring loud. However, the service, food and coffees are phenomenal. <br/>Eggs florentine , French toast stack, and deli pastries where exceptional. They have Banting options, but the "bad" foods are so damn good, it's worth cheating! PLUS it's noticeably less expensive than all my other favorite breakfast favorites !<br/>
Sanelisiwe Sani Sibanyoni
very very cute spot & beautiful setting, wow (totally love it actually). i ordered the Thai green chicken curry with cauliflower rice(which was great) but i honestly didn't like the chicken, there was way too much coriander overpowering. nevertheless maybe if i ordered what Mosa Mashati did because she loved her chicken wrap haha. i'm going back soon soon❤️❤️💫
Mosa Mashati
We got to starlings around 12pm which for me was a bummer because it was time for lunch so no more breakfast menus! (I thought they served all day breakfasts btw) I was looking forward to their famous eggs benedict or florentine. :(<br/>Anyway everyone was welcoming when we entered and walked through straight out to the garden where the vibe was just lovely!! It gets chilly there with all the trees, but they have everything well prepared ,there are tiny blankies on the chairs to make use of! <br/>Argh the setting is lovely and so is the ambience. <br/>Their lunch menu didn't have a wide variety of food and they also didn't have a drinks menu - you just had to know what you want to have which was v annoying for me because I was in the mood for a hot beverage & good breakfast that day and as I hardly have hot beverages - seeing a menu with everything they have would've made it all the more fun for me and the decision easier. <br/><br/>Anyway I ordered the chicken wrap which had chicken, caramelised onions( HIGHLIGHT of that meal) , rocket, homemade pesto mayo and I forgot what else. All in all that dish was superb I swear!!!<br/>My friend had the chicken curry if I'm not mistaken , she didn't enjoy it much and took it for take away mostly because her mind was already set on expecting an all day breakfast as well but I had a taste and the flavors there were good, there were coconut and ginger flavors which tasted so good together and the coriander topping was a bonus . They also offered sides of banana with coconut and salsa to go with it.<br/><br/> I'm definitely going back for the breakfast and that exact wrap!!! <br/><br/>Loved it!

Always have a great time at starling. The breakfast menu is limited but exceptional. The eggs benedict are so good. The chicken livers taste homemade and the omelettes are just gorgeous. Love the pretty teacups. The garden is my favourite place to sit as its filled with mirrors and lots of greenery. Coffee is good. Fresh juices are fab! Service always make you want to come back

Love Starlings. Food is always consistently yummy. There is a bit of a wait for a table some morning sue to how busy they are, but service is excellent!
Barbara Ann Hall
Excellent choice of restaurant for breakfast or lunch. This place is very popular and can get rather busy and noisy. The venue is lovely though with a constant buzz. Sit outside under the trees in the garden. <br/>Quality of food is commendable, as is the service.😙

Been here for breakfast a few times. Excellent coffee, beautiful setting outside in the garden and fantastic food! Portion sizes are nice and big, and avo servings are generous which is fantastic (and rare)! Excellent bread served with breakfast as well, as many breakfast places serve very difficult to eat sourdough - not the case at Starlings! Oh and the orange juice is incredible..
Julia Van Der Riet
Absolutely delicious food - my favourite meal being the mushroom risotto - and a lovely, relaxing little garden to sit in, tucked away from the traffic of the road outside.

having been there a few times in the past this was my first in over a year, my friends tammy and ingrid loved to go here but since they left cape town i hadn’t been back. i recall once being upset about the lack of french fries when i wanted to have a burger but i’ve never been dissatisfies with a meal. my breakfast today, however was simply phenomenal - i had what is essentially an eggs Benedict with salmon (on sourdough as opposed to the traditional english muffin). the salmon was fresh and flavourful, and the portion was generous for the price, the tomatoes were perfectly roasted to bring out their sweetness and just bursting with flavour. i’m always a bit skeptical of hollandaise as it can easily go wrong but this was a perfectly silky hollandaise light enough that it wasn’t overpowering while still maintaining its flavour - a quite sumptuous treat and i can’t wait to go back.

Lovely spot for some breakfast/brunch. Quaint and idyllic cafe with helpful staff, who manage to cope even on a busy weekend morning. Cute and chic decor make for a lovely atmosphere and vibe. The food is delicious- I've had the French toast with bacon! The portions are also very generous and totally worth the money. I don't drink coffee, but my friend had to wait a while for hers to arrive when it was busy, so be prepared for a little wait- just shows how popular it is! Will definitely be back!!

I absolutely love the atmosphere and warmth this cafe has with lovely decor inside and stunning outside area. I told my friends to try this place and they loved it, the food really great whether its breakfast or lunch. The desserts are also really good and this little hidden cafe is really nice an busy - hence great food and service 👌😃

This hidden café is 300m from my place, I've passed there a million times and only recently found out it's Starlings. I heard good things about it and decided to check it out. It was really packed, I was alone so I sat at the sharing table and didn't have to wait. The setup is beautiful and cosy with the option of sitting outside and enjoy the sun when the weather is great. <br/><br/>The waiter who helped me took my tea order(Lemon & Ginger Rooibos), moments later a different waiter brought me a cappuccino and I told him that's not what I ordered. The very friendly and helpful manager came and I told him what had happen. He apologised and explained to me that the tea I ordered is no longer available and reccommended what I could drink instead. Mistakes happen especially since it's so busy.<br/><br/>For my meal I had rye bread, poached eggs, mushrooms and lamb sausage with Rooibos cappuccino. I'm not sure if the butter on my bread was supposed to be such a tiny block/slice. However, I throughly enjoyed the food and it was very filling. I found the food to be affordable as well. I will definitely be coming back soon.

I have only positive things to say about this restaurant. My brother and I arrived early to make sure we got a table (definitely a good decision as there was sudden influx of people shortly after we arrived). <br/><br/>The food was incredible. I had the 'eggs florentine' on sourdough bread. The poached eggs were some of the best I've ever tasted and the portion was surprisingly large. The flat white was full bodied and rich in flavour. <br/><br/>The atmosphere here is beautiful. It's so quaint, low-key and unassuming. Even the bill doesn't have a 'gratuity' section on it. Definitely coming back.

First time at Starlings this morning, for breakfast in the sunshine. The place was absolutely packed to the brim, and is clearly a local favourite. I ordered a flat white to start off with, and smoked salmon and poached eggs on wholewheat toast. My friend ordered a flat white with a croissant and preserves. Strangely enough, the coffees arrived 15minutes after the food, which was really odd, and we sat without a full set of cutlery for a few minutes. Other than that, the food was tasty and filling but the coffee was milky and weak. Overall, the setting was beautiful but the service fell short.
Johnny Jol
I always look forward to going to Starlings. I know my breakfast or lunch is going to be delicious, and I know the service will be solid and friendly, and the atmosphere cozy and charming. I've never heard a single gripe about them.
Diane Forster
Difficult to go wrong when popping in here for a bite, be it breakfast or lunch. Great fresh ingredients & run by people that really care and have high standards. When in Claremont, out of all the restaurant choices, Robyn Forster and I love it there.
Stephanie Courtnage
Lovely garden seating and delicious food! Frances and I shared a yummy wrap followed by cake. The chocolate cake was good, not the best I've tasted but very enjoyable.

You can't get much better than Starlings! This place it literally a hidden gem. Deliciousness is found beyond the green hedges that you might mistake for a resident's garden. Inside, beyond the pretty fountain, lies a house and a courtyard done up tastefully in country/ shabby chic decor. <br/>During peak times, you will probably have to wait for a table, because even though it's a hidden gem, it's not so secret anymore. But the wait will never be longer than 15 minutes. <br/>If you can, try and sit outside. You'll feel like you're dining in a pixie garden!<br/>All their dishes I've tried are great - home cooked food style - and the service is really good unless you get a trainee. But I mean, that's the norm. <br/>Make sure you order coffee. It arrives in a beautiful Le Creuset mug! <br/>Bring friends, family, loved ones or even enjoy a table to yourself with a book. <br/>You'll leave happy.
Catherine
Starlings is an awesome little spot in Claremont - whether you're inside or seated in their gorgeous garden, you are site to enjoy yourself. Their food and drink is fresh, well -made and tasty, and their service is top-notch. You may have to wait a little for a table, but it's well-worth it. Love going there.
Taste_buds_sa
All we can say is WOW! Starlings Cafe is a beautiful hidden gem, with great service, great coffee and amazing food! <br/>This quaint cafe has a lovely homey feel, with a stunning back garden - during the summer you can expect to be sitting in and amongst the pear tree and beautiful rose bushes, whilst in the winter you can expect to be huddled up indoors, keeping warm and toasty, with a view that overlooks the beautiful garden.<br/>We highly recommend the eggs florentine for breakfast (tip - select the wholewheat toast - fresh thick slices of soft, farm-tyle wholewheat bread). This dish is absolutely divine - the eggs are poached perfectly and the hollandaise sauce is just right - one of the best we've had in Cape Town! <br/>The only downfall is that you can't book, however the managers are always efficient and make sure you have a table within the next 15-20 minutes.<br/>We do suggest you get there early for breakfast on the weekends (+-9am) if you want to avoid the busyness and hussle and bussle (although it does create an enjoyable atmosphere). <br/><br/>Love place! Thank you Starlings Cafe. :)
Chetna Black
Tucked away little spot in Claremont, and it is such a gem. Great service and fresh food. It can get busy but going early for breakfast over the weekend is usually a good time to get a spot. The coffee is amazing and the food really tasty ! If you were thinking of heading to Cavs for breakfast , rather take a walk out the mall and visit Starlings:)
Kendall Law
Very few places get a great rating for breakfast from me. It's not something that one can really mess up - bacon and eggs simple. But somehow Starlings Cafe elevates even that. I had their breakfast burger and it was something special. It comes with some amazing tomato jam / preserve. Lastly the coffee - I love my coffee and this place gets two thumbs up. I'll have another one now please
Lukeconorbolton
This little gem never seems to disappoint. We sat in the garden, it was such a great atmosphere. everyone was highly attentive and the service is good. I had the burger and it was fantastic. Would definitely recommend it for a quick lunch. The portions aren't huge, flavours are simple but delicious. <br/><br/>Lekker lekker

Sterlings is a really cool place , it's open area is perfect for summer but on a coldish morning the glass doors make it worth staying inside while enjoying a great breakfast. Friendly waiters and most importantly great food!
Chanel Pillay
Starlings is such a cute little rustic spot a bit difficult to find but worth it. My mom and I had a great breakfast there. The cappuccinos were good which is expected as they use Origin's roast. The food was fresh and prepared perfectly as you can see in the pictures attached. The service was good and even though they were very busy, the staff tried their best to keep everyone happy which I appreciated.

Starlings is a cute little spot that offers wholesome food. I've had their chicken Thai green curry which was delicious and their orange cake. The most divine thing, it was so good we ordered another slice. The service is friendly. Will definitely be back to try out their breakfast.
Rachel
Starlings is one of my favorite places to eat. They offer fresh and flavoursome meals that are truly to die for. The fact that they have such quirky decor also makes the whole eating experience enjoyable. Today I ordered the harissa on wholewheat along with a lovely and creamy cappuccino. This sandwich is my favorite along with their Aubergine bake. Their carrot cake is also really good: moist and filled with pecans and fruit- the cream cheese icing is also really delicious tasting like a vanilla bite of creaminess!
Sasha Vaughan
Had a one of the best chicken wraps I have yet tasted for lunch today and my mom had their salmon quiche, which she found to be a bit too rich. We finished up with slices of orange cake, with a dollop of cream which was pure heaven. Waiter service can be improved though.
Talia Lee Cohen
This restaurant is so well hidden that you almost don't see it, and once you do, it doesn't look like much. Yet, as you step through it's doors, the inside is enchanting! The garden has an almost whimsical air about it! The staff are jovial, and there is a mix of healthy goodness and alluring treats to pick from! <br/><br/>Ps: the chicken quinoa salad is a win! 🤓
Deee
This enchanting cafe is a wonderful spot for a relaxed breakfast with friends. Their red cappuccino, chai tea and hot chocolate are my favourite hot drinks; while the eggs benedict and the vegetarian pesto, avocado, roasted tomato and toast were the stand out meals. I will definitely be back to try more of their menu items and soak up some sun in the back garden when the weather is abit better.
Zanel
Why has it taken so long for me to go try Starlings?? If you haven't been just look out for a massive hedge and they will be hiding behind there.<br/><br/>We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table (which I've never experienced for brunch before) but the wait is worth it and that just shows how popular they are. The garden looks lovely for a sunny summers day, but we were cosily tucked inside between all the quirky decor.<br/><br/>When a plate of the french toast passed our table I made up my mind on what I would be having - 4 slices stacked with bacon in between and syrup on the side. Also had a really good flat white that made me smile inside :) my friend had the eggs florentine and raved about the hollandaise sauce.
Miruthini Naiker
I recently visited Starlings on my trip to Cape Town. I thought this place would be awesome due to the rave reviews on Zomato. However it did not meet my expectations. I ordered a freshly squeezed orange juice which arrived in a glass with a nice big red lipstick mark on the rim (A bad taste to start off our lunch). I then ordered the mushroom risotto with artichokes which had no flavour what so ever. The only good thing is that my husband and brother really enjoyed their burgers.
Lauren Kim
One of my FAVOURITE coffee shops - the best kept Cape Town secret behind the hedge! Their food blows my mind every time - my favorites include their egg hollandaise breakfast with zero carb bread, their chicken salad and any soup that comes out their kitchen tastes magnificent. But my biggest weakness at Starlings is their orange chiffon cake 😱😍❤️ you haven't lived until you try it. Summer is bliss sitting outdoors in the garden and in winter the blankets and hot coffee make it wonderful to still enjoy fresh air outside or sit inside and be nice and cosy! Can't express enough how wonderful this place is
Kriyanka Naidoo
Definitely my favorite breakfast spot thus far! The restaurant has a cosy feel to it with both a homely inside ,and a scenic outside seating area. We tried sweet and savory dishes with both dishes delivering in terms of taste, presentation and portion size. The only down side, really, is that they don't do reservations which can be a bit of a hassle if you're in a big group. This spot is perfect for a relaxing...

Hidden from first glance, this restaurant is definitely worth a second look. From its tranquil water feature, to its outside garden area, the mood and ambience is set for a good relaxed breakfast. Good food, good service and a smile upon arrival seems to be the norm at starlings. I've been here a few times and have never had a disappointing experience. The bacon and eggs with hollandaise sauce is definitely a fave of mine, and the flat white isn't too bad either.
Chloë
Definitely my favourite place to go for Eggs Benedict. The cappuccinos are delicious followed by a generous portion of hollandaise sauce to go with your meal. It never fails to disappoint! I'm clearly not the only one that thinks so - so if you go on the weekends, make sure you go early otherwise you'll be waiting for a table!
Waseem Dawood
this is a go to for a light breakfast or quick coffee. its a quaint restaurant found between loads of shrubbery along an unexpected little road in claremont. it has indoor and outdoor seating. their food is simple with clean flavours. always enjoy my visits there.
Chesney Boshoff
Nestled away behind an unassuming house one enters through a hole in a wall into a secret garden. Wonderful breakfasts and friendly service. I almost wanted to give it a bad review so that this little gem remains a secret!
Cptboytjie
Absolutely amazing. This place is Def a hidden gem. It doesn't even look like a restaurant from the outside. Service was great and the food was even better..Def a uncommon decor setup which is great. Makes you feel at home, literally

I've always loved Starlings. I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon than in the Starlings Cafe courtyard, sipping on one of their delicious cappuccinos.<br/><br/>Starlings poached eggs are perfection, which make this cafe the perfect spot for breakfast! The lunch options are not very extensive, but they cater to a variety of diets. The food itself is always delicious - I've never tried something at Starlings that I didn't like!<br/><br/>The cafe is a constant buzz of activity, but a free table can always be found. During winter you can even get a nice spot by the fire.
Kerissa Naidoo
Decided to try Starlings for breakfast this morning . They were very busy and we waited around 10 minutes to be seated but the service was great,we were even offered tasters of fresh pressed juices to try out while waiting for a table. Great atmosphere inside and the food was delicious . Definitely a great breakfast spot to try out.
Lynn
Out favourite breakfast spot without a doubt. Always back for more. Great food because of great ingredients. Amazing friendly staff, just need to step up the game in training some waiters/waitresses. Once that's in order you're definitely a perfect score
Lara
A quiet, yet vibey little place hidden away in the beautiful streets of Claremont. Food is super yummy. Breakfast chicken livers are a perfect alternate to eggs and bacon, although even the eggs and bacon are super yummy. Couldn't find fault. <br/>PS. Definitely try the juice of the day. 👍🏼
Meera Naik
Starlings café is a little gem tucked away behind a hedge. Had a lovely Sunday breakfast here this morning. The only juice that they were serving was apple, pear, cucumber and mint - it was very refreshing but I don't think that I would order it again. The veg omelette was delicious. I was just a bit surprised that they didn't serve it with toast. My favorite thing about Starlings is the unique, almost rustic set up.
Trevor Pols
I heard about this place hidden away in kenilworth/Claremont that make great coffee and breakfast, so decided to give it a try.<br/><br/>At first we drove up and down the road wondering where it was as it isn't clearly visible from the road (looks like a house). And once we found it, we were pleasantly surprised with the style and theme of the layout and decor. <br/><br/>We were met with smiles and shown to an outside table below beautiful green trees. <br/><br/>I ordered a freshly made juice of the day and cappuccino, which were both very average, but no complaints. Then for the breakfast, the menu is very small and limited, but the food was great! I made a few small adjustments to my order and rate my plate a decent 7/10.<br/><br/>I would definitely go back if only for the outdoor experience and ambiance.<br/><br/>Enjoy!
Jessica Hazell
Incredible service, lovely food and the most beautiful setup! Every time I have been here I have left with a happy heart and a satisfied stomach.
Nicola Kotze
Went here with my friend for breakfast and got simple scrambled eggs on rye which was very tasty! They give you a big potion of eggs at a very good price! I also had their red cappuccino which was equally as delicious. Waiters aren't very personal with you, and because I was outside I didn't receive that much attention and waited a bit for the bill. I also had to get my own blanket because it was very cold that day. Over all it is a very beautiful setting with well priced, good food and a good spot for lunch, breakfast or coffee, or as a date or family lunch. Would definitely go here again.
Teresa Ulyate
I visited Starlings last week on the public holiday Monday, it was packed! Parking was a nightmare but once I was in it was lovely. We had a nice table in the garden, and our waiter who was run off his feet was very friendly and obliging. We all enjoyed various cooked breakfasts and there were compliments all round. The food took a little while to come which was understandable, but when it did it was hot and cooked perfectly. I had soft poached eggs with carb free bread - so delicious! Besides a bit of a wait for the food and drinks I couldn't fault it. Great place!
Sunil Osman
When my mother said she had never been to Starlings, I knew I had to take her. I have been taking fellow Actors, Comedians, friends and family to Starlings Cafe for quite a while and I have never had one bad experience. The food is always fresh and organic, the service is always excellent and there are often awkward silences because of the flavours and pleasure given to one's tastebuds.<br/><br/>The breakfast menu and all their menus in fact, are not complicated and you are definitely getting value for money. The menu tells you the basics and the most common reaction has been the surprised look when the order is presented to you so wonderfully.<br/><br/>The juices are fabulous and always fresh and despite being a small natural setting venue, the service is faster than expected even on busy days like public holidays.<br/><br/>If you like your organic food, you love quality in your mouth and body then Starlings Cafe is for you. Hey...My mom loved the place and I rarely give a place a 5 rating. Carla Lynn Apolles

Popped into Starlings for a quick bite to eat yesterday morning! As always the food was good and the service was very friendly. Unfortunately they were quite busy and as a result everything took a while to make its way to the table. Nevertheless a good dinning experience🍴
StuieMic
This tucked away restaurant and coffee shop is an absolute gem!!<br/>The barrister has amazing coffee, beat in the area by far!!<br/>Their food is fresh, seasonal and absolutely amazing!!!!!!<br/>The restaurant itself is a hotspot and very rustic with the right amount of class!!!<br/>What a place!!!
Brent Allan Black
Starlings is an absolute gem! Absolutely everything about my experience there was fantastic, from the ambience and service to the food and tea. Perfect place for weekend brunch, though get there before 10am when it starts to get busy. The food was divine and impeccably presented - I ordered the special (The Fermented Plate) which was smoked salmon, fermented beets and cabbage on wholewheat bread and covered in hollandaise sauce and was not disappointed. Cannot recommend Starlings highly enough!
Hannah T3
Oh wow, this place is a gem in the middle of residential area, I would never expected a cafe there as I drove pass it so many time! There is no signage at all! I guess it just shows how good they are. The decor is simple and homey, such a tiny place but good use of space. The menu is a bit small, but it was enough for me to take more than 15 mins to decide because I just want to have everything on the menu! Perfect breakfast & lunch spots.
Paul Gregory
Great service and friendly staff. A gem hidden away. Food was great and received exactly what we ordered. I would recommend this cute little place
Heath Webb
Visited for an early morning weekend breakfast! The atmosphere in this quaint little spot is really buzzy, service quick and attentive, and the breakfasts amazing. The coffee it pretty potent too! Well worth visiting again.
Peter
No signage and hidden behind a cute little water feature, honestly we felt like we were walking into a strangers house, that's until we were greeted by friendly staff and a hidden enchanted garden. A garden so enchanted and beautiful that my fiancé wanted to scrap our idea of a wine farm for a wedding and rent out starlings for the big day 😊 The menu itself was small but every item required careful consideration as everything on it sounded tantalising. Finally we settled on what to eat, and what a pleasant feast. There is no possible way to find fault in their food, as every bite was a journey that enhanced the joyous occasion. Amazing breakfast and coffee, what more could we ask for.
Simone Hasselbach
Parking is a bit of a schlep but this truly is a hidden little gem. Pretty courtyard setup with friendly staff. Had the eggs benedict followed by the orange schiffon cake (their speciality) and baked cheescake. Definitely worth another visit!
BT
Unequivocally the best breakfast spot in the Southern Suburbs. Always a pleasant experience eating a special eggs Benedict in the outside area. Regular visitor and that will not change anytime soon👌
Lauren Waller
A really great spot for breakfast in the southern suburbs! The outside area is a fairytale garden scene and it's beautiful to sit there on a sunny morning. They're often very busy but handle it well. Waiting for a table is a pleasure when they bring you a freshly squeezed juice sample of cloudy apple or pineapple (yum). I really enjoy the avocado, pesto and sundried tomato breakfast, however their eggs are also a good option, they're done to perfection. Lovely ambience, great food and great service. Do it!
Charné
Edit: i had the chicken wrap and it was by FAR the best wrap I've had in a long time. There was so much chicken and the pesto sauce was just delicious. <br/><br/>Starlings was absolutely buzzing today. Despite the business the restaurant is calming and cool, with little fountains and trees in the courtyard. The food was absolutely delicious, I especially loved the eggs Benedict. The berry French toast was also yummy. This little restaurant is an absolute gem.
Ross Michael Trow
This place is the most gorgeous hidden paradise I've had the fortune of going to. Service is both friendly and helpful coupled with healthy food and reasonable value for money. <br/>Not even mentioning the stunning little back garden and makes you feel at one with nature
Hershey Kiernan
The best place to sit in Starlings is in the courtyard. It is beautiful with flowers and trees all around you. The waiters/waitresses are pretty attentive. The menu has a variety of really good breakfast dishes. My personal favourite is the Eggs Benedict. The place can get quite busy so try and get there before 10 in the morning if you want to sit in the courtyard. There is a parking area at the side of the restaurant for Starlings patrons but that fills up pretty quickly. I've never been able to park there  but there is ample parking on the street.
Kim Stavropoulos
I decided to pop into Starlings during the week - early morning, to avoid the crazy rush. I've always wanted to visit. I had the Eggs Benedict with Banting bread and it was the best I've ever had. The coffee was good too. There's a beautiful outside area that was full up but it's worth your while to stand in line for a table - they don't take bookings. Breakfast Heaven for the foodies :)
Jami Priessnitz
Yum yum breakfast time, loving my eggs benny at starlings in the garden - and what a perfect summery morning ♡ one of my most favourite breakfast spots in Cape Town !
Sihle Ck Mkhize
On A rainy morning Starlings Cafe was the scene for what I hoped would be a lovely brunch. We were seated outside in front which gave us a nice soft environment for our meal. The staff were very friendly and accommodating lowering the panels to prevent the rain hitting us which was greatly appreciated. I ordered the Vegetarian omelette with Feta. Which unfortunately was slight burnt on the outside. There was nothing that really excited me from the meal and I felt a bit disappointed. My partner had an eggs on toast with hollandaise and salmon which tasted lovely. All in all it was a good experience besides the meal. I guess it was just the my unlucky day at Starlings.
JotterJo
Exceptional breakfast in a picturesque setting served by a friendly & competent team of people! Generous portions, deliciously fresh & tasty nosh. And by far the best no-carb toast I have ever tasted compliments of Alisons Bakery. What a delight!
Jaynisha Patel
I have always loved starlings for breakfast. The garden setting is great for a summer morning and the seating inside is cosy and warm. The service varies from friendly to average. <br/><br/>The menu has a decent variety for vegetarians, and I usually enjoy the eggs Benedict. On my most recent visit, I had the coconut toasted muesli which was a large portion and really yum. My sister had the avo toast served with an exceptionally delicious homemade basil pesto. <br/><br/>Overall it was a great breakfast as per the usual standard. We did wait a quite a while for service which was a bit annoying. The coffee was good and the teapots are cute.
Jenna Espley-Jones
This hidden gem remains one of Cape Town's best sources of deliriously rich chocolate cakes, light and airy orange chiffon cakes, and other delicious baked goods. Another big plus is the fact that they stock Soya Milk! <br/><br/>Starlings offer an assortment of heavenly breakfasts and lunches. It is a tranquil space for work or to meet friends.
Suitcases And Lattes
We had a great experience at Starlings. There was about 8 of us. We got a seat in the courtyard. Service was pretty on point. The food was great. Big, hearty portions of well seasoned food. They did not rush us to eat quickly even though the place was busy. <br/><br/>The only criticism was that the coffees were not too great ( bunch of coffee snobs). Otherwise, it's a great breakfast spot. <br/><br/>See the previous review on www.suitcasesandlattes.com <br/>
Saarah Survé
Hidden behind a hedge in Rondebosch, Starlings is a real gem, with good food and great coffee! The portions are generous too - especially that of the chicken caesar salad! This café has a lovely atmosphere; it's delightful to sit in the garden during summer and soak up the sun, and in winter, you'll be deliciously cosy, because of their fireplace! The staff are friendly!
Saadiqah**
This is my absolute favourite breakfast spot. Food is consistently amazing and the setting is perfect winter or summer. Its always packed for a reason! Staff are extremely friendly and service is great. You can order anything off the menu and will not be disappointed with your choice.
Aashiqlatief
All time favourite breakfast spot. Saadiqah** and I absolutely love it. Never been disappointed. Oooonly recent thing is the coffee, is it Origin or not?? Or can it be the milk? Tasting a bit funny lately..
Laura-kim Le Roux
I love visiting this restaurant when I am in Cape Town. They have such a healthy menu and every meal I have had has been divine. I had the chicken Leland on my last visit - so yummy
Genevieve Law
Busy busy busy. This little cafe is so popular so you need to be prepared to wait for seats. It's looks like it used to be a house that's now been converted into a cafe. Outside there's lots of greenery and there are a lot of nice touches with the decor. Unfortunately the service was a bit poor. Our waiter was lovely and kept informing us of where in the queue our orders were but the place was just so busy. Our coffee arrived only well after our food was delivered and well finished. We also saw other orders for other people that we didn't see on the menu so I think we were missing a section on ours... Or everyone else is just a regular. I would like to try this establishment again when it's less busy because of all the high reviews it's been getting.
Christine Buchanan
As always Starlings never fails to come up to expectations! The quirky ambiance, the helpful and attentive staff, and the menu that is not your typical brekky menu yet caters for all tastes, keep us coming back (all the way from Joburg!). Oh, and hot food is served on hot plates. That attention to detail is so important.
Lindsey Rayner
Without a doubt one of my favourite spots in Cape Towns southern suburbs. Lovely garden breakfast spot; exceptional coffee; and owners who really care about your experience. A must visit!
Jessica Barraclough
Very busy brunch period on the last day of the year. Staff were very accommodating despite the lack of open tables. Excellent service. Lovely atmosphere, charming presentation of food.
Jess Gamble
Best iced coffee I've had in a long time, and love that you can create your own breakfast. Make sure you get a table outside - beautiful garden
Vaughan Coulson
If I could I would give Starlings 6 out of 5. Wonderful setting, coffee and service. The only downside was the lack of signage outside - we couldn't find the place. Once we did though, it was worth the hunt !
Megan Rajah
Innovative setting. A little house and courtyard converted into a pretty cafe. Very very busy, a bit too much hustle and bustle for my liking. Food was average for me, unfortunately.
Kristen George
Lovely breakfast spot tucked away in the busy Belvedere Road. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Be prepared to wait as they do not take reservations. They also amazing cakes and pastries.
Wynand Viljoen
The Pros<br/>- Excellent food. Wraps are fresh and very tasty.<br/>- Outside shaded seating is great for a warm summer day.<br/>- Well priced @ R205 for two wraps and two coffees<br/><br/>The Cons <br/>- Parking can be a problem in peak times as you park in Belvedere road. There are 5 parkings in the back. Just drive in where the green hedges grow.

The setting - a beautiful, simplistic home with outside seating in a lush garden is a pleasant surprise in the middle of a suburb. The food is superb - from traditional eggs and bacon (or salmon), to peri chicken livers or mince with a poached egg (fav!). The service can be slightly slow and you can wait to be seated but it's worth the wait. They have freshly squeezed juice on offer and a selection of freshly baked cake on display - a large slice of soft vanilla cake with orange cream always goes home with me.

I was standing in my friend's kitchen complaining how I hadn't yet found a great eggs benedict in Cape Town, when both her and her roommate just blurted "Starlings"! Naturally, I had to give it a go, and I am so glad I did!<br/><br/>As soon as you walk in the door, Starlings gives you this tea-garden-meets-woody-but-contemporary-coffee-shop vibe, and surprisingly, the contrast works! The manager was friendly as he got us a table (it was pretty packed for a weekday but they found space), and from the get-go we had a kind and attentive waitress. <br/><br/>I ordered earl grey tea, and interestingly, they offer tea leaves as opposed to your usual bag. Whilst I love my Five Roses Earl Grey, it was a nice change! I knew what I was going to eat even before I came, and I'm so glad I didn't change my mind (their menu can be quite diverting). So this was the best eggs benedict I've ever had. Yup, yup. And it wasn't even a salmon one (say what?). I've eaten my fair share, but honestly this one 👏🏼👌🏼. For those of you who enjoy eggs benedict, you'll know that the hollandaise sauce can make or break it, and needless to say, this one made it. It was divine. Divine. Combined with the bacon, rye bread (they offer other types, but our waitress recommended it) and tomatoes, it was simply stunning. <br/><br/>I'm usually very reluctant to give a restaurant 5 stars, especially when I've only been there once, but there was honestly nothing that could have gone better. And if that doesn't deserve a 5 star, what does?
Emma
I thought that it was brilliant. Lovely scenary and good quality food. However one of my friends had her poached eggs over cooked and the sponge cake was a bit dry for them compared to usual which put a bit of a dampener on things for them. But I still really enjoyed it. Great little spot :).

We had a late lunch in this amazing place, by all accounts the risotto,  green curry, aubergine bake and chicken kebab were amazing, but the chocolate cake was the absolute best and the coffee delicious. We sat inside as it was a little chilly in the beautifully decorated garden - Trish , I can't believe we have not visited your wonderful café before.
Laura Bergh
Consistently excellent quality of both breakfast and lunch menu offerings. Breakfast portions can be a little on the small side but you can taste that the food has been prepared by someone who loves what he/she is doing. The lentil salad and mushroom risotto make this a destination worth visiting. Love the intimate atmosphere and garden seating. I'm always greeted with a big smile when I walk in the door. A firm favourite.
Claire Shaban
Lovely garden spot. If I remember correctly, they cater for gluten free. My favourite time to go is lunchtime. Simple food, pleasant setting.

Never had a bad meal here. The food takes a while but is oh so worth it. There is no sign outside so it is a bit hidden. Trust me. Find it!!!
Foodster CT
Great little place to have lunch (or breakfast.. But beware, they do not poach eggs to order. It's soft or nothing). The food is good and the garden is better. Get a table outside if the weather is pleasant as it's a bit cramped inside. The aubergine bake we had was delicious and a generous portion. The burger is really good and comes loaded with cheese and trimmings. The bun is rich and toasted and the burger is served with sweet potato chips (more like crisps really but totally yummy). They also have a few salad options. Vegetarians will find a few good options at Starlings. They could make better coffee but hey... you win some you lose some. Peace!

This review is for the new Starlings Locale in Newlands. We had brunch. Eggs Benedict R65, Poached egg on toast R35. We liked that we could choose our breakfast breakdown. Total bill for 4 of us including teas and coffee R246 so price is average. Tea cup was dirty - they then just rinsed it and brought it back dripping wet. Service could definitely improve. Starlings in Claremont has better ambiance and service. Cheesecake is good but doesnt beat Hello Sailor in Observatory.

Majestic atmosphere. Very cool set up with good tasting coffee and a simple but scrumptious menu. French toast with bacon is amazing! Defs worth popping in!

STARLINGS (Claremont, CT) |☆☆☆☆| 4.2<br/><br/>Im just the average food lover on an adventure to find The Best Eggs Benedict & Coffee Combo (EBCC) in SA, Iv started in Cape Town and my journey is still young, but Starlings has been my 6th place to try out so far, and it is holding No.1 so far on my list with a 4.2 of a 5☆rating.<br/><br/>VENUE:<br/>A rad little place, I like the fact that there is no signage just a gate in a hedge, which makes it feel like a secret surfer spot. It has a tight inside, but on a sunny day, the garden is perfect.<br/><br/>SERVICE:<br/>Starlings in general has amazing service and the time from order to munching is fast with no sacrifice to quality.<br/><br/>PRICE:<br/>Really good value for quality and quantity.<br/><br/>● Coffee<br/>R22.00 ( standard size cup )<br/><br/>● Eggs Benedict<br/>R75.00 for a large portion( 2 eggs, 4 bacon, 1 large toast)<br/><br/>*You can ask for a second slice of toast.<br/><br/>AVAILABILITY:<br/><br/>**Breakfast is not served all day<br/><br/>Weekdays seem busy, but there are open spots. Breakfast ends at 12:00<br/><br/>Weekends seem very busy, with a moderate waiting time. Breakfast ends at 12:30 on Saturdays and at 1pm on Sundays.<br/><br/>*** STAR RATINGS ***<br/><br/>■ COFFEE | ☆☆☆|<br/>I always go for a cappaccino as my choice, they use Origin: Spring Blend Beans and has a fairly good taste without sugar and works well with the EB. I would say its more of a Flat White, to those who are specific about their foam. The coffee does not clash with the EB for taste bud attention.<br/><br/>** Not a 4 or 5 star because I have had better, but 3 is still worth it.**<br/><br/>■ BREAD | ☆☆☆☆ |<br/>You have a few choices, I have had the homemade whole-wheat and the the sour dough, which are both very nice. I haven't tried the rye yet.<br/><br/>** The bread is slightly over toasted for me and can be a bit hard to work with, so ask for slightly toasted if hard toast is not your thing.**<br/><br/>■ BACON | ☆☆☆☆☆ |<br/>Tasty and varies between normal to slightly crispy.<br/><br/>■ EGGS | ☆☆☆☆☆|<br/>Well cooked and reliable to how you ask for them.<br/><br/>■ HOLLENDAISE | ☆☆☆☆ |<br/>It tastes like it has an English Mustard touch to it, with a good thickness and an all round tasty flavour.<br/><br/>OVERALL:<br/><br/>The Good:<br/>I keep going back, because it's just that good.<br/><br/>The Not So Bad:<br/>I work freelance hours, so I rely on having a breakfast option anytime of the day, but sadly they don't due to the kitchen being fully used for the awesome lunch menu, which is understandable. =)

Delicious reasonably priced food with excellent service . This cafe will have me as a regular for a long time , and remains a perfect breakfast treat .
Claudia Penny
Once you've had one Starlings breakfast, you will find yourself constantly craving their most incredible scrambled or poached eggs. My absolute favorite is the pesto and Parmesan poached eggs, but their other food is equally as good.<br/><br/>Their coffee is amazing, the barristers really know what they are doing!
Esna Beattie
Absolutely love Starlings! We have started frequenting it about once a week - and the waiter now knows our orders off by heart and exactly how we prefer our orders, attention to detail like this is what earns our loyalty! Most delicious food and exquisite coffee. Definitely one of Cape Towns Gems!
Ceiran Megan Vd Westhuizen
The food was simple and very tasty. I loved the breakfast I had. Very quaint, lovely set-up. A nice place to go for a 'cutesy' breakfast date.
Jessica Stromin
I love Starlings. It is my go-to breakfast place on a Sunday morning, and it always delivers! I've tried nearly everything on the menu but my favourite dish is the Parmesan and pesto poached eggs with an extra side of avo. The eggs are always cooked perfectly, the Origin coffee is always delicious and the service is always friendly! It can get very busy in the mornings but it's really worth the wait!
Saskia
The perfect location for a coffee date, a beautiful hidden little spot; and the food is lovely. Just note that Starlings does not pay it's waiters, they live on tips alone, so tip well guys!
Lisa
Love love love this place! Their orange chiffon cake is light and delicate. Food is fresh and service is good! Will always make time to visit!
Nikki Lincoln
Gorgeous venue. Superb menu. Wonderful staff. I would absolutely recommended this eatery to anyone I know. The southern suburbs needs more places like Starlings.
Tiyaarah Cloete
One of my favorite little gems, just around the corner from me. It's a nice place to relax (get a little sun in their garden) grab a light meal and chill out
Dale Bedford
Hidden behind an impressive hedge with no signage, you're in danger of missing it altogether. Great breakfast options, and poached eggs and hollandaise worthy of 5 stars. Lunch menu looks amazing but this place is usually full so be prepared to queue!
Robyne Stephenson
Such a great little hidden place to go for breakfast! My boyfriend and I went for breakfast on a Wednesday morning and it was pretty full! We thought this would delay the service but it did not at all! Coffees came quickly and breakfast too! Coffee was superb. Our waiter was so lovely and had such a great vibe about him- wish I got his name! The kitchen made a mistake with our order, giving me my boyfriends toast and him my zero carb toast but our waiter apologized as he brought out our meals, realizing and returned two minutes later with some more toast for me as my boyfriends hollandaise sauce was all over the other. I had their zero carb toast with house made pesto, roasted cherry tomatos, avo and rocket. It was delicious! Very generous with portion sizes. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting a good breakfast. Sitting outside in the sun is definitely recommended during summer :)
Kelly Rae Gifford
Starlings is such a wonderful hidden gem. If you feel like a nice little lunch/breakfast or fantastic piece of cake, it is a super spot. I particularly enjoy sitting outside the back in the garden. Would certainly recommend it,for a outing
Angus
It wonderful when someone can take an ordinary plain residential building and turn it into something quite special, with ordinary furniture and a mish mash of cutlery and crockery. Yet this is what the owners of Starlings have done. The result is a charming warm and cozy casual restaurant with an equally simple but charming small garden with extra seating. A couple of fountains and boxes of fresh produce for the kitchen add to the flavour. <br/>I've only had a standard breakfast there but it was perfectly prepared and very tasty. Also their coffee is great... Really fresh and strong- I would go back just for that!
Nbebentley
Best eggs Benny in CT! The iced chai latte a must have. Awesome staff and homely atmosphere. Wouldn't go anywhere else! Spring is here and the garden is lovely.
Lutfiav
Orange chiffon cake to die for. Hasn't been available recently though. Banting options good. Bit pricey Very friendly staff. My favorite local hangout.
Cassey Toi
Great coffee, but the food is highly overated. Over priced for what you get. The service is spotty. On one visit we had a wonderful server, on the most recent one it was as if we didn't exist.
Gabrielle Meyers
What a great little spot. I had the risotto for lunch, followed by a slice of the chocolate cake. This place is honestly amazing. Good food, cosy vibe and a guaranteed satisfying meal.
Jeremy Jenkin
This is probably my favourite spot in Claremont. The coffee is delicious, the food tasty and the service on point. I frequent this place for their delicious breakfasts, Eggs Benedict is a must. The homely style inside, creates an ambience perfect for a date, meeting or just a catch up. Their cake selection is decadent but oh-so tasty.
Brandon Ellse
This is a hidden gem. They have a simple menu but the food is outstanding. It's a bit out of the way for us otherwise I'd go more often. Really nice sitting outside in the garden during summer. I had a really excellent curry the last time I was there.
Vinolin Naidoo
I like the setting. It's in a garden with some beautiful potted plants and a pathway. The place was rather busy and the food took a while to get to us. I think my love and I were still on a high from having The Larder the previous morning.<br/><br/>The bacon was good though!
Amy Blaine
Amazing divine fresh homemade food. So enjoyed the setting in the secret garden. Had a lovely double expresso americano with 2 perfectly poached eggs on sour dough bread finished with basil pesto and parmesan cheese. Very well presented... Will be back.
Coral Le Roux
The hedged front yard belies the cosy, warm and inviting interior. The secret garden (as we named it) has a wonderful air about it. The food is fresh and tasty and very well presented. The service is efficient and friendly. Certainly a hidden gem...
Michael Collins
From the unexpected and hidden gem spectrum.  Food is very good healthy and maybe a bit too self conscious.  The pricing is steep, service professional.  Good work spot if you want outdoor and vibey.
Georgie Lockwood
Ready for a Tim Noakes approved; Rhondebosh Alice in Wonderland treasure hunt, hipster garden tea party! Starlings is a popular hidden gem that unless you know where it is... you will get lost. Love the decor and the vibe chic and warm. Food is very wholesome and healthy. <br/><br/>
Huw Richard Forbes Jones
Lovely little hidden gem with a beautiful outside area. Great breakfast, coffee and chocolate cake. It's never too early for chocolate cake 🍫🍰🍳
Jana Lorraine Pretorius
Starlings is a real little unexpected stumble-upon treasure-trove between Rondebosch and Claremont. From outside, it looks rather plain and unassuming. However, its warm and quirky interior makes for the perfect tea party experience, worthy of Lewis Carroll's Alice stories. The mix 'n match interior decor as well as crockery keep the eyes and imagination occupied, and the fragrant teas and freshly baked goods keep the tastebuds singing. Overall, it offers a wonderfully fun and wholesome dining experience, which is becoming increasingly popular with time. Get there early (or outside of foodie rush hour) to secure a cosy spot.
Cassy Hsu
To be fair, I haven't tried their food yet so it is not about the food. Their operating time was not correctly updated on Zomato. So my boyfriend and I drove all the way to the restaurant and only found out that they are closed for renovation (BTW, will open again on the 9th July). Not only for the inconvenience they've caused, the sign of the restaurant was hard to spot too, so we drove around and around looking for the restaurant. First timers : call to find out their location and confirm reopen date ahead for safe side.
MelbourneLops
Super cute hidden gem! I absolutely love this place. Great coffee, breakfast and setting! A definite girly-date-must! It's always packed so get there early or be prepared to wait a little bit for a table!
Nicky
A catch up with the ladies? Lunch with your friends? Birthday celebrations? Starlings is the place to go. Although the prices aren't low it's definitely worth it. Wholesome, tastey meals and delicious cakes and coffees.
Lori Claire Cape
This is one of my most favorite breakfast spots in Cape Town. I love how it is decorated and I love sitting outside in the garden. The staff are always very friendly.
Instaeatscapetown
While Starlings serves the best coffee in the Southern Suburbs and their food is absolutely delicious the space is way too small and the staff are not attentive to waiting patrons. The place gets crazy busy on weekend mornings and the staff and management don't seem to be able to handle it
Adri
Starlings is the best! They have my favorite breakfast ever, poached eggs and salmon and I love that you can add tomatoes and mushrooms too
Jenny Sarah Coulson
You will most likely have to wait for a table, but it's worth it. The courtyard is adorable and I much prefer it to sitting inside (which can be cramped). The eggs benedict is a definite winner, and the bread they use for toast is DIVINE. I've also had some pretty amazing fresh juices here. I don't like that you can't book a table, though - that's put me off from bringing big groups of friends to Starlings before. It's much better for a "tea for two" kinda outing. Nevertheless, if you haven't been - make a plan!
Daniel
What a fantastic discovery...quite by accident, after the restaurant we were supposed to go to nearby, was closed.thanks zomato for the useful info re.alternates in the area! The reviews are correct, this place is tops, outstanding food, outstanding service, outstanding attention to detail...a small menu BUT ...when everything on it is fantastic, it really didn't matter. This was my first visit, but it definitely won't be my last.
Olivia Carolissen
So i parked my car and started to follow the breakfast smell ..if you have been here before it would be needless for me to tell you...I ended up asking the car guard where it was ! ...situated in a old house now converted to a restaurant this is truly a hidden gem ...with a lovely courtyard in a very cosy setting this makes a perfect breakfast spot anyday of the week .Breakfast was really good and yes we had baked cheesecake after breakfast...yes we did ....why not ...try this spot #hiddengem
Lauren Arendse
This is one those spots to keep on your regular pop in places; whether a quick breakfast, lazy lunch or afternoon tea.<br/><br/>Delicious, simply menu that adopts per season to keep variety. All meals are fairly larger portions made of fresh ingredients. The range of sweet dessert, no matter the option, are so tasty and prefect with one of their coffees or teas.Personally, really love the garden setting so warmer days with some sunshine are better but for colder rainy day it is cosy and warm inside. The details of the finishes and the decoration make you feel so at home.
Jemal
I just couldn't wait to write my review. First time at Starlings cafe and it is absolutely amazing! It's an enchanted little gem and not to even mention the most amazing omelette I've had with a very cute ginger & lemon tea...served so cute! I would definitely recommend this place and I want to go back to taste more of their health selection of goods. The best place I've come across for brekkie in a long time!!! A definite MUST if you're in the area!!! Service is friendly and great too. Small selection of goodies, but all so delectable. I cannot wait to go back. Well done guys!!!
Kate Coulson
Home away from home! This gorgeous restaurant serves delicious home-cooked meals in big portions. I recommend you sit in the garden, under the trees, and order the eggs Benedict and a cappuccino. The staff are friendly, the food a-m-a-zing and the setting is cosy.
Catherine Steere
Starlings is one of those old faithful spots that you know will always be good. I love the decor and the place is always vibey. The food is delicious and the menu has some great variations on the classic eggs and bacon.
Ryan Mulders
This hidden gem is basically invisible from the road but once you find it and get inside you are treated to a great experience. The ice coffee will blow your hair back. The ambience is lovely and I like the outside area alot.
Brendan Pramjee
Definitely one of my fave breakfast/brunch places in Cape Town. Fresh ingredients and great combinations make this place a winner every time !
Tiger Bax
Top breakfast spot, delicious food, lovely outside seating area, breakfast date heaven! Great pastries to top off any one of their delicious meals.. Always worth a stop, friendly if not always efficient service, only because of popularity, worth it.
Foodhunter
Divine little breakfast spot! Beautiful to sit outside in the garden on a sunny morning & lovely, cosy inside for those colder days. Delicious, generous breakfast, yum coffee, a great selection of cakes. The lunches are delicious too! <br/>
Megan Thomas
Don't expect quick service, but expect what you order to be worth the wait. Every time. You go to Starlings for the experience so I can't imagine why you'd be in a hurry anyway! Sit in their beautiful garden hidden behind the shrubbery on Belvedere road and treat yourself - while some complain there's no signposting and that its hidden... I'd say it's one of Cape Town's best kept secrets (well... Not anymore... Oops!) I've gone to this restaurant just about enough times that I could probably list half the menu to you. Off the top of my head, you will never go wrong with the: grass fed beef burger, lamb curry, any tart, cheese cake, salmon omelette (my breakfast this morning) or the lentil and goats cheese salad. And don't forget to order one of their ice teas to go with it!
Heather Charnock
I went for breakfast and ended up eating a slice of the most amazing Orange chiffon cake...paired with the perfect Cappachino it made my day. ill definitely be back, especially during winter to enjoy the indoor fire place. Thanks guys keep up the good work
Shahima August
Firstly, the place had no name on it...and therefore we drove past the place😂we managed to find parking in the busy Belvedere Road but the venue does have a parking area on the side.the landmark to look for is very high hedges...the only ones in the area.we were seated and served quite quickly.you have to pass the kitchen area as the seating area is in the back.lovelly indoor as well garden area.the food was served quickly.its a very bustling Saturday morning place, with waiters doing everything frenetically...but most likely will go back
Sydne Beaumont
Super cute little cafe... Perfect for a relaxed lunch with a friend or some afternoon tea! I had their salmon tart with a side salad that was delicious... Their menu is small which is perfect because too many choices can make it complicated
Ashley Young
Wow, what an amazing little place! It was crazy busy buy the food and service was top class! I have already recommended Starlings to my friends!
Lisa Botha Gibbon
This little place was well worth the drive from Seapoint. It's not easy to find, being cunningly camouflaged behind a thick green hedge! We sat in the charming garden, and enjoyed great cappuccinos followed by curried mince on toast, and soft poached eggs with bacon. Delicious. Service is friendly, but you need a little patience. Even so, it was well worth the wait. On my list of best breakfast places in Cape Town for sure. The coffee beans are origin, and the barista performs some magic with them.
Gitan Naki
An absolute gem! Can't believe i never knew about this place and I live down the road. Had such a refreshing breakfast here (see pic). The pesto was to die for. We sat in the quaint garden, such a great way to start your day :) will def be back!
Zulfah Albertyn
The outdoor section was great even on this chilly autumn day. I had the fried egg, Parmesan and basil pesto with sourdough and 2 flat whites ?- it was a great breakfast. The surrounding and service contributed greatly to the experience. I'll definitely recommend Starlings for breakfast, although I wish they had mimosas ?.
Christine M
What an absolutely charming little spot! The Starling Cafe is the definition of a hidden gem - unassuming entrance, but quaint interior and gorgeous garden setting out back. The restaurant was packed mid-morning on a Friday which just goes to show how fabulous it really it. The service was fantastic, the food was delicious and reasonably priced. We picked from their list of "make your own breakfast", had some of their homemade bread and paired our breakfast with great coffee. The homemade pork sausages were an absolute win. It was an incredibly yummy and beautiful way to start the day - I would definitely recommend paying this little spot a visit.
Edgar Lutaaya
Fantastic hidden gem. Parking may be a bit tricky for the newbie but once you step into the cozy setting, smell that great coffee and sample their nurtured plates, it's well worth it!
Maria Christodoulou
Great garden setting. Great service. Fantastic food and coffee (Origin, of course). A definite must, whether it's for breakfast or lunch!
Robyn Rainier
What a divine little place!! This is the perfect setting for a lovely breakfast as the little garden is so peaceful! A friend and i came through for breakfast, where I had the poached eggs with basil pesto; it was absolutely delicious, with the poached eggs having been done perfectly. Service is a little slow when it's packed but still friendly! I suggest booking beforehand because it's very popular.
Tim Sibben
a great setting in a hidden house that does not even look like a restaurant.  friendly wait staff that serve good food.  i had the livers with poached eggs and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Michele Fry
Lovely quaint restaurant. Although I've only ever had breakfast there, I've heard that everything is great. Try their tall orange cake. It's made by angels. (I had it for breakfast)
Danielle Schwormstedt
This quirky restaurant based in Claremont is one worth visiting. The breakfasts are to die for. The food is good quality and the portions are rather generous. Also the scenery of the beautiful garden is a bonus.
Tanya Heathcote
I absolutely love this little spot! The back garden is so quaint and is the perfect spot for a quick cup of tea and a catch up or a long leisurely lunch under the pear tree (just watch out for the very heavy falling pears!).<br/><br/>The breakfasts are excellent here with very generous crispy bacon portions and lovely fat porkies. The bread selection is wonderful - the wholewheat and rye always super fresh and tasty.<br/><br/>On the lunch menu my favourites include the Caesar salad or the really tasty veggie salad option of lentils, goats cheese, roast tomato & avo. The burger has a beautiful, thick grass-fed patty and a very tasty aoili.<br/><br/>Although service can, at times, be slow here and clearing takes a while it doesn't detract at all from the lovely ambiance and good, wholesome food.
Michelle Parkin
I had heard of starlings cafe so many times but somehow never managed to get there. You know, it being in the other end of the earth if you are from Cape Town! <br/>But now, having been, I can tell you it is well worth the 15 min drive from the CBD. <br/>It was so good that I went twice in one week!! <br/>First time round I had chicken thigh skewers with steamed broccoli and green beans tossed in a light vinaigrette. Just perfect!<br/>Second time round I had the steak & salad which was perfectly cooked.<br/>Both times we had perfect coffees ( they don't serve alcohol but I think you can brig your own?).<br/>Thanks starlings, you are now one of my favourites!
Shamera Daniels
Excellent coffee coupled with good food and attentive service ... If you wanting to chill with friends and need a good catch up session this is the place
Bryan Vally
Repeated visits to Starlings have convinced me to abandon my quest to explore all of Cape Town's breakfast spots as this place is simply unbeatable! The setting, vibe, service and especially the food (Eggs Benedict is my favourite) are all, in my opinion, perfect.<br/><br/>UPDATE: I visited Starlings yesterday after a long time (and a few more breakfast spots under my belt). I absolutely stand by this rating. Superb food, good service and the best breakfast setting in the 'burbs.
Emily Kate Smith
An awesome spot for a chilled afternoon lunch with the girls. Great coffee and delicious salads. Their vanilla Chiffon Cake is to die for! Actually all their cake is good. Beautiful shady garden out back is perfect for a hot day. Service is attentive and friendly. All that is missing is a glass of ice cold vino! (They don't serve wine)
Natasha Kim Dreyer-Coleman
Perfect hidden gem. I keep coming back to this spot. If you are looking for a relaxed spot with a bit of a twist then this is the place. You're guaranteed fresh, delicious food and good service. I love their breakfasts. Two poached eggs with added extras and their brioche french toast with fruit compote and cream fraiche are worth a try. Although, their lunch time lamb curry is mouthwatering.
Tarryn Bento
Starlings gives new meaning to 'hidden' gem - I didn't even see a sign for it from the road, and the entrance is rather odd and dingy. However, once you're inside, it's delightful! <br/><br/>Sit inside at shabby chic tables, or outside under towering trees and among beautiful trinkets hanging from the branches or scattered on the ground. The tables are decked with cutesy table cloths and the serviettes have birdie stamps on them; it's all wonderfully charming. <br/><br/>The cappuccinos at Starlings are really superb and comes in mix 'n match Le Creuset cups... such a treat! We tried their chicken, leek and bacon pies, with cauliflower mash and garden salad on the side: they were a little light on bacon, but very tasty and satisfying.<br/><br/>Overall, Starlings is very laid-back and great for a chilled morning/lunchtime vibe. The food was a little slow in arriving but our waitron was very sweet and attentive.
Jess Douglas
Best breakfast place I have ever been to...the service was fantastic. They treated us like gold. The food was scrumptious and I love that they source organic free range ingredients.I will be back there time and time again...the grain free bread option was the "icing on the cake"
Jager Sisters
Always a great breakfast spot that we’re bound to visit when the folks are in town. <br/><br/>We recently tried their carb free bread and it is probably one of our favourite varieties of this type of bread. Their simple poached eggs with either avo or bacon and slow roasted tomatoes is a delicious and generous breakfast that won’t break the bank. They serve Origin Coffee and we've had consistently good coffee there as well (coffee quality is a deal breaker for us when deciding on a breakfast place). There are many other tasty breakfast options like eggs florentine and the french toast with fruit and creme fraiche is incredible. <br/><br/>Their lemon chiffon cake is also delicious if you go for afternoon tea - so light and fruity. <br/><br/>The garden setting, eclectic decor and friendly staff make Starlings a spot we are always keen to visit, and one we will often take friends to as we know they're consistent in maintaining high standards.

If you're looking for an elegant, healthy lunch spot in the Southern Suburbs, this is it. Delicious coffee, tasty baked goods and a pretty garden add an extra level of pleasure.
Kyle Kapital
Starlings is a gem tucked away in the suburbs. The menu is "efficient", but leaves all tastes catered for (Banting included). Food does take a while, because the cafe is popular, but the food, service and atmosphere more than make up for it. <br/><br/>
Kate McLean
The orange chiffon cake from Starlings is just about my favourite thing ever! But that's not to say that everything else in this amazing cafe isn't wonderful, too. From salads, to burgers, or a warming curry, there's something for everyone. The service is always friendly and efficient. The decor is quaint, and there's a shady spot in summer and their fire is always welcome on a rainy Cape Town day.
Dawn Gottgens
Delicious food on a limited menu but something for everyone. Banting meals available and really yummy. Gorgeous to sit outside in the garden - inside can become quite noisy if you want a quiet chat.
Shak_Van
A true testament to the new age level of cafes! A really charming place, hidden away in Claremont with quirky decor and a lovely outdoor area. I quite liked the bathroom- a window sill filled with flowers! Swoon! But I think that's where the good ends... although you are given fair warning of the wait, waiting about an hour for food is ridiculous by any service standard. Tea's and coffees were cold by the time the food arrived. The French Toast I had was not great but my mom's eggs were delish! All round quite a temperamental experience but worth another shot.
Sarah-Lee Tinney
Such a pretty little tea place. I've had everything from burgers to eggs Benedict and tea and I've never been disappointed. Also, for a sweet tooth, the brownies and cakes after a must have !
Doron Dusheiko
My favourite breakfast spot in CT. Quirky, Alice-in-Wonderland garden with strange wait staff, ridiculously delicious food, intentionally mismatched cups and sauces and a real Madame Zingara feel to it (although it's not one of their restaurants yet).
FoodQueen
Great hidden gem. Coffee well made on a 2group la Marzocco GB/5. Menu succinct but varied enough to be interesting, JUST enough vegetarian/pescetarian options. Nice decor, elegant yet comfortable, compact yet many seating options, outdoor garden area and jet master fireplace inside. <br/><br/>To get there, don't rely on your eyes alone -no signage so ask the helpful parking guy in the area where 'the cafe' is (hidden behind a big hedge & looks like an ordinary house). Extremely helpful staff, concerned, attentive... sweet. In all, def worth the drive from wherever you are.
RhiannonForlee
Cute little cosy venue.. perfect for summer days or the winter months. Had the most delicious chocolate cake today, and my friend had the delicious tart-ine with walnuts, mushrooms and pesto. Delish !
