We just love this restaurant, we have been going there for about 2 years now. The sushi is always perfect and we often do takeaways too. The restaurant is generally quiet, and has a lovely peaceful zen to it with its bamboo decor and wallpaper. Always our only choice for a meal out at Canal Walk :) Located by Primmi and Tashas, not in the food court. Come on give this small business a chance :) Buy one get one free on Tuesdays :)
One of our favorite restaurants. Sadly they have closed down. I first thought it was for renovations as most shops and restaurants around Akiya closed to renovate, but we went for sushi at another place in the center only to be served by our regular Akiya waitress and she told us that they closed down.
One if my favourite intimate little Asian spots with attention to detail and tasty food. Sushi is beautifully made and really fresh. Service is very pleasant. Coffee is STRONG.
Really good service, kind waitress they go the extra mile to please the customer, I.e gave me a bowl of warm water to wash my hands when I asked.. sushi was amazing I asked the chef to choose for me and I was super impressed. For an authentic sushi experience I would recommend this place.
Decent food and reasonable prices. Yummy dumplings (not as good as the ones from china but still some of the best I've had in CT). Service was great. My udon soup was delish!
Hi I am from Dubai. I have been twice to this restaurant. The restaurant food was excellent. I tried their sushi and fried rice it was really good. The place is very simple. The stuff we're friendly but I felt that they are not professional. The way they were bringing the food and handling it were below my expectations. Overall good experience.
Thanks
In a busy shopping mall filled with many interesting shops, is a quaint little restaurant serving authentic Asian food with flair and flavour.
The restaurant is simple yet elegant and is a perfect place to ditch the noisy crowd from the mall. The staff is always friendly and very accomodating if you want to substitute something from the menu.
Their sushi is freshly made and beautifully presented. The Deep Fried Californian roll was flavourful and well seasoned with a spicy fish and avocado roll, topped with a sweet chilli sauce for an extra kick in flavour. My favourite was the Creamy Tempura Spicy Tuna roll wrapped in sushi nori and topped with a delicious creamy rock shrimp tempura.
The Deep Fried Wontons are crunchy and crispy, filled with delicious prawns and served with a sweet chilly sauce. Who can resist good prawn toast? The combination of the minced prawns with spices and bread works well. The addition of sesame seeds gives it a mild nutty taste along with extra crunchiness.
The filling of the Shrimp dumpling is actually tasty and yummy. The Shao Mai are small bundles of joy deliciously filled with ground meat. Nothing beats a good Char Siu Bau. The bun is fluffy stuffed with BBQ pork goodness.
This place is ideal for a shopping-break lunch or an early dinner.
Great sushi with quality wasabi. The Dim Sum is also very tasty but a bit overpriced. The atmosphere is relaxing and they serve good tea. Definitely worth a revisit.
Excellent sushi!!! Fresh and tasty!! Service is also very friendly. It is nice and quiet even though it is in a shopping mall. Will definately come again even though it is a bit pricey.
We've been here a few times and their food is pretty good. Always quiet but on the last 2 occasions they were packed. They have a good selection of sushi and dim sim. They also serve a selection of tea but i have yet to try it.
Best Maki I have ever had. Sashimi was brilliant. Excellent place for a quick, delicious & intimate lunch. Service could have been better but the food definitely made up for it.
Had a massive sushi/dumpling craving. I live in the area so I thought about giving them a try. Sushi was delicious and they swapped tuna for salmon without hassle. Had pot stickers and they were yum too! Quaint little place. Servers can be a bit noisy at the back though.
I walked into a super busy Akiya Sushi this afternoon to grab a quick take away. I assisted by friendly staff who took my order. I ordered a selection of Salmon Sushi (Selection 2) which is my all time favourite and a portion of vegetable spring rolls. I enjoyed both the sushi and spring rolls, the only downside was the container where they place this soy sauce into was so tiny I couldn't fit my sushi pieces into it.
Service was slow. We waited quite a long time for a menu and to be greeted. However, it doesn't take away from the food - which was good. Fresh sushi, great dim sum, and nice to run away from the crazy festive mall.

Little oasis in the middle of chaos. Loved the sushi, deep fried wonton & soup. Everything was fresh and delicious. My only criticism, the waiters are really absent minded and slow
I don't like shopping centres! however work next door and needed something to wear to the xmas party, on Thursday, yes this Thursday!!! by the time I walked past Akiya, very hungry and my sushi craving intense! still had plenty of shopping to do, ordered a quick salmon roses and a glass of wine ( shopping makes me anxious) fantastic music selection what shopping? omg salmon roses!!! (temp. was just right, brought out the flavour!) I stayed 2 more glasses of wine, ordered a tuna salad, always a favourite and oh my it had the sesame secret I've been looking for since returning from the UK. Oh dear Shops are closed. I'm happy and taste buds are satisfied. Recommend you to try! I will return!!!
Sushi is way better than some of the top 10 in Cape Town and more affordable too. Good atmosphere for in a mall. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Quick service.
I've been to a number of sushi places and this spot is amongst the priciest. The reality is however that the pieces are really well made, tasty and well presented. If I had the funds to support a sushi habit I would not hesitate to eat here more regularly.
They do not have a conveyerbelt and every piece eaten is freshly made. They are also open to requests, so if you want to add or remove something they are willing to cater, which is refreshingly appreciated.
On account of the price, the place is frequently empty which essentially means you get personal service from the staff who are friendly and obliging.
The tea they serve is tasty and genuine, presented very attractively. The decor in general is picturesque, and the seating comfortable.
If you're taking a girl on a date before a movie, this spot would be ideal for conversation without needing to shout, service without needing to beg. Just be prepared to pay for it.

A gem in the hive that is Canal Walk.
Pro:
- astonishingly good sushi
- prices are very competitive, particularly when considering its competitors (Willoughby's etc)
- its fairly quiet, a respite from the maddening mall.
Cons:
- service is slow, your sushi is made to order, by great sushi masters. Don't be in a rush, chill and enjoy it.
- the waitress can be attentive at first and then drop off a bit, some people may prefer this.
I highly recommend this great little underrated place.
It's on the more expensive side, but there's a decent variety of sushi on offer, and was quite enjoyable, especially the sashimi. A good selection of teas for dim sum. Manager lady was friendly and helpful. I'd definitely go again the next time I visit Cape Town.
Small Asian restaurant in a busy mall. The restaurant is small so don't expect much, but it's great to come somewhere quieter to enjoy some sushi, Dim Sum or other Chinese and Japanese dishes. Service was a tad bit slow, but it's expected with only 1 waitress.
All that said, the food is tasty and the sushi is fresh. I'll be back here again!
Food ordered:
Starter - Prawn spring rolls.
Sushi - Salmon roses, temari balls (salmon and tuna) and creamy tempura on spicy tuna roll.
Mains - Chicken udon soup.
Ask for tap water if you don't want to be tricked into buying a bottle of still water; otherwise service was good for the one waiter servicing the quaint restaurant. The decor was simple and clean, food presentation was excellent from the spring rolls served in a little hand basket to the well prepared sushi.
However, the featured temari ball's presentation outshined the unspectacular taste. The udon soup fell short for the price, it was smaller than we expected and the broth was quite bland (not to mention the tiny soup spoon).
Overall, the price matched the effort in presentation but the flavour was nothing special. We would most likely forget about this restaurant because there's not too much to rave about.

Dont know why the previous review was so bad but ending with a 'Steers' burger says a lot. Akiya has foreign waitresses so its understandable that they have a language gap, no need for judgement. The sushi is excellent and well prepared, we have never been disappointed and go there once a week, highly recommended. Small and quaint its a quiet place to enjoy some good food. Far better than steers ;)
Loved it. Super star menu/food and service. Our waiter was incredible, we were a table of 8 and he made sure we were taken care of. The food was fresh and delicious. Wonderful restaurant for casual mid week dining or celebrating special occasions. The owner was also hands on, being a lovely host to all the tables in the restaurant. Definitely worth visiting this place more often. They have a large sushi menu and hot meals menu with Chinese and Japanese dishes. Lots of vegetarian options too.
Flavourful fresh wholesome meals, surprisingly after reading many negative reviews, we felt extremely satisfied. The restaurant was full, and all the meals that had been served looked amazing
Meals are large and can easily be shared.
Waiters friendly.
Waited a bit for our food, may have been due to staff transportation after taxi strikes.
Lovely time with family and friends - highly recommended!
The desserts and tea was extra special!
Some of the best sushi I've ever had! It's a great location with a beautiful view of table mountain.
This isn't a budget dining experience, but the sushi is definitely worth the steep price point. Prices range between R145-R175 for 8 pieces. But they did run a lunch special while we were there.
They serve bubble tea ranging from R45-R80 in different flavors.
I give the restaurant a 4 star rating, because the service didn't meet the quality of the food. The waitress was unfriendly and seemed irritated with us, even though we were the only diners in the place. They also had loud conversations at the front of the house, laughing and socializing. This took away from the relaxed, plant-filled atmosphere that is the restaurant's interior.
Went for my birthday as we love Asian food! My boyfriend had the seafood hot pot which was very pleasing to look at and tasted nice, but we couldn’t find the scallops as stated on the description on the menu and considering the price it was a bit of a let down, I had the Miso ramen which was nice. Service was slow and waiters weren’t very attentive so we waited very long to order. When we received our food we the waiter put a plate of noodles next to the hot pot which we thought were supposed to go in because we didn’t order it extra, suprised to have been charged almost R50 for such a small plate that we didn’t eat from or ordered
Overall still a great experience but staff could definitely improve on service
What a great spot, staff was friendly and the food is great. Definitely try the Hotpots, it's amazing!!
Ramen is soooo good! Some dishes are spicier than you'd expect but still soooo delicious 😋😋

Went back to try their Japanese hot pot and it did not disappoint. I definitely recommend it... I had the kimchi one and it comes with lamb. It was super flavourful... priced just over R200 but its more than enough for 2 people to share so quite reasonable per person.
Food is exceptional, service is excellent . Thank you to the owner Phil who made me feel very at home entering his restaurant, will definitely be indulging in your food soon
The small hotpot is great for 2 people to share. Bubble tea also delicious
Really cozy shop to enjoy some ramen. Service was great and they offer many tasty options to choose from.
Staff is not always great, but food has always been good. We have had their ramen, buns, sushi, bubble tea, all of which were very tasty. Just be prepared to wait a bit
An amazing place - great food, great service, good location
