Review John Dory's Century City - Century City

Approaching 9 p.m., the senior manager graciously permitted us to dine, even though the kitchen was on the verge of closing. We selected items from the menu, enjoyed outstanding service, and relished the delectable food. Highly recommended, with affordable prices.

The person who gave us our menu very unfriendly did not smile. Bur our waiter Givemore made up for it, he was super friendly and helpful. A bit of a noisy venue. I had the grilled hake and veg - very good. 😊

It was not crowded and good and sharp service at this venue . The wait staff was attentive but not overbearing and even though the food took some time to arrive, it was well-prepared and tasty. The sushi belt was well-stocked and they have Wednesday half-price sushi specials. Some of the soft bench seating was in a state of disrepair and there is not bathroom in the restaurant itself. It begins to fill up after 6pm.

Always so nice to visit your store. Very friendly staff, clean shop and service excellent. That's why I will always go there and highly recommend them. Keep it up team.

I went for supper with a friend. It was a bit busy for a week day but the service was excellent. I ordered a prawn and cream cheese spring roll which was good but unfortunately no chicken spring rolls. XO Prawn spring rolls would be a great addition to the menu. The spring roll came with a sweet chilli dipping sours which was good I ordered the prawn bomb poke bowl which was Delicia and I would highly recommend. It even have mango which I love. My friend ordered fish and prawns which was a really generous portion and was amazing. We ordered and watermelon strawberry mocktail which was delicious. Maybe not for people who don’t like sweet drinks. The service was good, the food came out pretty fast. We were welcomed with a complimentary bowl of popovers. Food was delicious. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely come again and recommend John Dory

My first experience at john dorys. Top class food and value for money with excellent service.

I had John dory's delivered to my work for the first time ever for lunch and honestly I was not expecting what I got. The fish was so fresh and so good. It literally melted in my mouth and the sushi was bomb. Like a literal burst of flavour in my mouth. Fortune cookie brought me good luck so that was an extra. Definitely my new favorite fish and chip restaurant.

My family and I prefer going there at least once monthly for some delicious seafood. They have a kid's menu with a playground area while my kids are waiting for their orders. There's an option of fries or vegetables while there's an option of your seafood or grilling it. Their desserts are divine and they also offer a variety of beverages.

Last Thursday , my husband and I had a quick supper here as we were staying at one of the hotels in Century City. The restaurant was still open and we could order The food and drinks were amazing and at good prices. The atmosphere was good too. Will definitely visit again.

Staff are amazing, Managers are present and engages with patrons... food is exceptional with decent portions, well prepared and prices are reasonable. an all round amazing experience... keep it up...

Waiters were friendly and we were helped immediately. The sushi was lovely and fresh , grilled prawns and calamari was also lovely . The strawberry cooler is great and contains nice Chunks of actual fruit such as strawberries and mint leaves

Food was great, really nice peppermint tart, but service was lacking, because she was more worried about helping clean up and putting everything away, rather than leaving that to waiters who had no customers.

Excellent place for seafood and sushis. The place is very nice and cozy. The menu choice is great. The service is great - you will have a manager checking on you every now and then. The waiters are great as well. We had a seafood platter, sushis and some very nice prawns. The prices are also very good and by 18.30 the place was almost full compared to other places So definitely recommended !

The food was amazing. Waiter was very accommodating as i am a wheelchair user. Food was served fresh and on time. Hardly had to wait. Will definitely be coming back

Ordered a Mr D delivery from here. The fish and chips were some of the best I’ve had. The hake was so fresh, the batter crispy and the chips were hand cut and a mixture of thick and thin which I really liked. It also came with ample lemon butter sauce. The sushi and prawns tempura were also good. Food arrived hot but it would have been nice if they sent cutlery with the order.

John Dory's was where I had sushi for the first time and their prawn avalanche used to be my absolute favourite.  It was half price sushi last night (Wednesdays) so one can expect it to be busy, but the wait was longer than necessary. We were seated right at the back, close to the kids play area so will suggest sitting at the belt to just grab your sushi if you're hungry and not playing around. We had the prawn and cheese spring rolls which were good, but the sushi was just average.

Food was good and we really enjoyed it but the waiters definitely need to be sent for customer service training. <br/>The waitress brought the kids food, no drinks were brought prior receiving the food. We had to request cutlery after receiving the kids food. We had to remind the waitress twice about 2 drinks that was not received (15 minutes after receiving all meals). Not sure whether the waitress had a bad day or not but her service was of the worst we’ve received to date from any restaurant. <br/>It was quite disappointing!!!<br/><br/>Not sure whether John Dory’s CanalWalk would be seeing us again...

Ordered the platter for 2. Chips and rice portion could be abit more since it is for 2. Prawns were really delicious, the spices used made it 👌🏽. Calamari strips were okay. The sole fish was also nicely spiced and cooked. I usually don't like ordering fish but that I enjoyed. Mussels were alright. As for the sushi, it kind of looked like egg yolks but it was really nice when dipped into the soy sauce mixed with a bit of wasabi(yum)

The food here is delicious and well prepared. A bit too close to Ocean basket if you're looking for affordable sushi, but overall tasty experience. <br/><br/>The waiters need customer care training though. Our waiter sat on a chair chatting to his mates instead of bringing the bill like I asked, and he discarded my takeaway instead of bringing it to the table. I wish it was only one time, but on my previous visit I asked for change to purchase a can of fruit juice, and he said he never had change in his pocket. I don't care ... do your job, go to the till and make change!

Great service from the moment we entered. <br/><br/>I ordered their 12 piece sushi platter and my friend ordered their Strawberry and Cream Pudding(Sushi) from their vegetarian menu. I had a taste of my friend's sushi because I was intrigued by the combo and it wasn't bad at all. Tasted more like strawberries and cream mixed with rice than anything else :') <br/><br/>My sushi was good. Definitely not something to write home about but good nonetheless. <br/><br/>I also ordered the Meander Platter(Prawns, Calamari Strips, Basa Fillet and Mussels in a Creamy Garlic Sauce) to take home and I must say, I was really happy. The Mussels in the sauce were the best part of the combo with the Prawns following right after. Everything else was just okay.<br/><br/>It was my first time a John Dory's franchise before and I wasn't disappointed.

Did not have the best experience here. Ordered a prawn and calamari tube combo with chips. When my order arrived I had rice instead of chips - they changed the order once pointed out but then my friend had cold food waiting for mine to arrive again so we could eat together. <br/>The calamari was purple and pink, not cooked properly and still raw, my prawns were not cleaned properly before being cooked as the poop chute was still inside two of the six prawns. <br/>When speaking to the manager she replaced my calamari and the second lot was much better. <br/>Waitress was unable to tell us what was in the cocktail mixes as she said they are premixed and thrown into the glasses from a bag - very uninformed. <br/>Poor service from John Dory's especially for my first experience. <br/>Only positive was the manager on duty who was so helpful and accommodating. <br/>Won't be back again.

Went for the Tuesday special, which is two fish and chips (or veggies or rice) for R70. The meal is worth the price, however the size of the fish is tiny, the slice of lemon on the side was nearly the same size. I opted for the veggies and it was really good, the fish was flaky and well seasoned as well. They have a huge seating area. Just a pity the fish portions were so small.

Excellent service as soon as you enter. The place has a nice vibe to it - vibrant, busy and great decor. My family I were craving sushi so we sat by the sushi bar. The sushi was good - not the best -but still hit the spot. I would suggest you order a portion of crispy California prawn rolls - when ordered fresh they are crispy and simply delicious!

Had the 1/2 price Wednesday special at John Dorys and I must say for a special they don't skimp on quality. Waited less than 15 min for my sushi once I ordered. Worth the special as I paid less than R100 for my 11 pieces.

I have been here once and there is just too much going on. Too many specials, too many menu items and too many different types of food. I don't think they hit the nail on the head with their fish options. I think there are other fairy priced places that pack a better punch with regards to flavor. The service was good and efficient but I didn't enjoy my sushi because the rice wasn't up to scratch and my fish was bland. It's okay overall but they could do so much more with less.

First time going to this John Dory's last night and the sushi was really good. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our food. Only thing they could improve on is keeping the prawn avalanche hot! But I do understand its busy at peak time on a Wednesday. Thanks guys!

The most random decision ever to eat here, walked pass and I saw the 1/2 priced sushi on Wednesday and I just walked in. <br/><br/>The sushi was okay. I don't have complaints. I like the fact that they weren't shy when it came to their salmon like most places are. <br/>Their fried sushi was not good at all. <br/>My partner don't eat sushi so he has hake and calamari which was really nice and fresh. <br/><br/>Not sure if I'll go back but my experience was basic.

Popped into John Dory's after an early movie, we were seated and had to wait a good 10minutes before getting a waiter to our table. <br/><br/>The restaurant was not very busy, we ordered a bottle of wine between the 3 of us. <br/><br/>Once we received the wine we waited another 5 minutes before he brought us glasses and ice. <br/><br/>30minutes into or dining experience we ordered sushi. <br/><br/>We waited about 20 minutes for our sushi and another 5minutes before we received wasabi and ginger. <br/><br/>The rice was hard and sticky, it tasted like the sushi had been out on the conveyer belt all day and now being served to us. <br/><br/>The manager walks the restaurant handing wet wipes out to the customers and just smiling saying enjoy the meal. Not giving you much opportunity to say something. <br/><br/>Below average dining experience.

If its seafood or sushi you craving, john dory's is a great place to visit. We just popped in to fix a sushi cravin and wow what great food quality and service.

Wow! We haven't been here in a while and my my oh my what an experience. The service is prompt and friendly, the food is absolutely scrumptious and excellent value for money. We had the lover's platter which is more than enough food for 2 people. It's such a pity that there aren't more John Dory's branches.

I have bean here couple of times and my experience so far is good. Sushi are especially well crafted.Also kajun chicken and hake are a not be missed. A friendly service and good ambience.

The Tuesday special, 1/2 price hake & chips and pay R17 for a flying fish beer is a real bargain, the waiter that served us yesterday was really friendly :)

So disappointing! I'm really not impressed with their sushi - in all honesty, I'm just not. The fish isn't as fresh as I'd have liked it and the rice just had the strangest texture. Atleast staff was friendly

Went for sushi today and the service was fair and the sushi was decent. Wish that the sushi pieces were not that large, but other than that I can't say anything negative. Was an average experience that I guess once done is enough.

Nice venue with a very contemporary feel but really crowded. Service and attendance by waiters are below medium pace. The food is OK, nothing super special. We ordered sushi, a seafood platter and grilled (bloody) medium steak. The bill was just under R300, not bad.

Why oh why did I allow the kids to sway me to come here. 😐<br/><br/>Terrible, uninterested service from the waiters. The only time they swarmed around us is when we walked in and they all vied for us to sit in their station.<br/><br/>My main came before my starter....my sole tasted like it was in the freezer for a very long time and tasted very fishy with brittle bones. Granted management swopped it out when I complained but my new piece was exactly the same.<br/><br/>BUT the worst is when we were waiting for our food a waitron walked past empty tables into the kiddies play area....digging in his mouth with a toothpick and trust me his hand was pretty deep in there as well....then went directly to serve tables...I felt ill😳<br/><br/>Told management and granted they were gracious enough to apologise and said they would rectify matters and for this I'm giving the 1.5. But too many other things went pear shaped and we won't be back.

John Dory's is laid-back and relaxed - a perfect family restaurant that caters for young and old. <br/><br/>They are well known for their seafood with a variety of shellfish, calamari, fish & sushi. If fish is not your thing then they also have chicken and beef grill options to choose from. If you still can't decide then you can have the best of both worlds. <br/><br/>Food is tasty and good, but nothing too over the top plus the portions are generous and great value for money. Their menu also caters for kids. <br/><br/>A great place for a family outing with delicious seafood and great atmosphere. <br/>

This is a family friendly seafood restaurant located upstairs in the canal walk food court. We decided to visit the restaurant to take advantage of the sushi special on Saturdays. Unfortunately both of our orders were messed up, but we were so hungry by the time the food arrived that we didn't send it back. I think I'd stick to other seafood restaurants for fish and other seafood dishes, but you might want to try the sushi special if you're in a big family group.

I don't usually review (or visit) franchises, because my kids are grown and I prefer to stay away from rowdy restaurants now. But this one needed a special mention. We visited due to lack of options and yes, rowdy it was, but the food was surprisingly good. I had the Hake and spinach and my husband had the calamari and steak. Both were tasty and actually quite well cooked. Don't know that I would go back - due to said shouting, clattering and banging, but I can't say I had a bad meal.

John Dorys is our go to place for amazing half price sushi specials on a Wednesday. Their sushi is always fresh. Service can be a bit slow but on other nights It's not as bad. There are also many other great specials throughout the week on the rest of the menu.

It was a Tuesday and I was lazy to cook so I was looking for Tuesday specials online. That's when I saw the John Dory's Tuesday special. Its two hakes for the price of one. I've never had John Dory's before so I thought why not try it. We arrived in the evening and the place wasn’t that full. My friend and I decided to sit outside as it wasn't that cold. <br/><br/>Our meal arrived very quickly, (it took less than 5minutes) and we were bit sceptical that the meal wouldn't be fresh. It surprisingly was! I enjoyed the chips and the hake could have been less crispy but that is just me and my preference.<br/><br/>There was only one sauce on the table (peri-peri) which was horrible on its own but worked with the chips. To drink we ordered two Hunter’s Dry’s and when the order arrived we didn’t receive ice, straws and lemon slices. We weren’t even asked if we would like ice or not. <br/><br/>I’m not sure if I was hungry or not but the meal didn’t last long nor was it very filling. I wouldn’t order this meal on an ordinary day. Our waitress Lydia, who seemed very nice, left us with much to be desired. She seemed very tired and ready to go home. I know it’s a risk sitting outside in a restaurant as you’re most likely to be forgotten by waiters/waitresses but this was just unacceptable. (We didn’t even get mints with our bill!) <br/><br/>It was also weird that even though we were seated outside, it was still a non-smoking area. Maybe this is a restaurant policy or a shopping mall policy.<br/><br/>All in all it was an okay meal, nothing to write home about, especially regarding the price. There are probably more exciting meals on the menu.

Who can say no to sushi specials?<br/><br/>The waiter was super friendly, but the service was very slow. This is probably a given when you go on a busy night & there's a sushi special! 😜<br/><br/>The food was so good, fresh and super cheap! I definitely recommend the Bar One milkshake! It is so amazing! I thought about it for days! 😂

What a lovely meal we had at John Dory's. It's such a shame that they have a low rating. Whenever I eat here, my standard order is the fried calamari or prawns. The calamari is always fresh, however the prawns can sometimes be very tiny - but for the price, it's still a solid meal.<br/><br/>The service is wonderful. The manager has came around to our table on every occasion that we've been there. The waitresses are friendly and helpful. The peri peri sauce (found on the tables) is delicious! Their desserts fall short, though. There's nothing special about mud pie and soft serve anymore. Of course, not John Dory's fault though, being a franchise. They have some decent sushi, but I've tasted better. Stick to the prawns, calamari and fish in my opinion :)<br/>

Went for the 1/2 price Saturday Platter special... I love bargains!!! 😋 it was lovely, waiting period was a bit on the long side but it was all freshly made so worth the wait.

I've only had sit down sushi here everytime, but it's fantastic! Really decent sized portions and the quality is fantastic. <br/><br/>It can get extremely busy, especially during the day, oddly enough, so try and go for an early lunch unless you enjoy a crowded house. When I say 'busy', I really mean it. It becomes a maize to get to the other side of the restaurant and makeshift seating really becomes annoying, fast.<br/>Not much they can do about it, understandably.<br/><br/>The waiters - love them! Smily, joyful people that learn your face pretty early on. It's very likely they'll recognise you should you visit again. <br/><br/><br/><br/>

This place is what it is. Difference is the wonderful service and tasty food. Great place for a quick bite after wandering the mall for hours.

Popped in here to pass some time while waiting for wife and daughter. I noticed they had an sign outside promoting a sushi platter and cocktail for 99 rand. Went inside and Sat down and ordered a strawberry shake. I enquired about the special and the waiter told me that they have no Friday specials. I told him about the add and he said the special was finished.<br/><br/>I then looked at the sushi menu and noticed that they only had individual items. I asked the waiter if they had any sushi platters on the menu to which he responded yes and looked through the menu. After realising there weren't any he told me the menu changed, I must order individual ones. <br/><br/>He was really clueless. <br/><br/>Also the sushi prices are ridiculous. 47 rand for 2 piece salmon nigiri. I paid for my milkshake and left. On the plus side the milkshake was really good.

My girlfriend and I went to John dorys Canal walk for supper, what a big mistake. We usually visit Ocean basket for seafood but I suggested we try something different. Spent close to R500 for the worst service ever. Our starters came at the same time as our main meal and my starter was on the same plate as my girlfriends starter. Already adding to my frustration was the loud atmosphere in the place as they had some half priced sushi special. I stopped eating way before finishing my meal and my girlfriend said she will go to the bathroom. She stormed out of the bathroom after less than 10 seconds saying lets get out of here. I do not think I want to go into the details of but a couple was being indecent within the toilet facilities. I regret taking my girlfriend to that restaurant and will never go to John Dorys again. Poorest standard with regards to any restaurant I have been to.

Went for date night with hubby. The food was ok...but the service was not great. The waiter barely spoke and looked like he didnt want to be there. I must be honest, I won't go back...

Good atmosphere, food was great.. I recommend the Mussel pot as starter and Portuguese steak as main.. Prices is affordable and meals are generous.. A great choice for your local seafood restaurant, being with friends or family, kids friendly..

I had lunch at John Dory's and everything tastes great. The portions are big and for what I paid for I would happy pay it again. <br/><br/>It's a bit far from where I stay otherwise I would be a happy regular there.

We ordered the calamari main and starter and the kids ordered pizza. It was absolutely delicious, well cooked and well presented! <br/>Staff were friendly and attentive, and service was fast. I love the Sunday special where kids get to eat for free with every main ordered!

John Dory's is always good for fresh seafood at good prices. Their staff is friendly although The service can get a bit slow during busy times. The sushi, although not gourmet stuff, is always fresh and tasty and the Wednesday half price deal is good value for money. My only complaint is that the standard California roll is made with too much rice and the wine by glass options are very limited

I tried John Dory's for the first time last night and I was very impressed. The restaurant is a nice size and tables are large and spaced nicely apart so you don't feel as if people are sitting on top of you. Their sushi was really really good but would be better if it was cold (it was room temperature). The fish and calamari was amazing and the portion size is very generous. I found that the waiter could've paid more attention to us but overall I had an awesome time and their food is seriously good - not to mention really reasonably priced!

Good service and delicious food. Was bit disappointed to see my prawns was not cleaned properly ..but otherwise all good. At least the shop is clean and does not smell as fishy as their neighbours :p

Always have great food here. I had the muscle pot, though I must say banana jam's is better tasting. A new addition which is really good is the calamari and chorizo pot. A bit disappointed the specials they used to have are no longer avaiable. Service at this restaurant is absolutely terrible ! Hence the 3.5. Barely get service to begin with so you need to ensure you order one time otherwise you going to wait for service once you have your food.

I love their sushi special and their sushi is so good. They have a massive conveyor belt. If you sit at a table then you wait a while for your food but the staff are friendly most of the time.

I came to John Dory's for lunch with my work colleagues. The sushi was fresh and big - and half price on a Wednesday! 😊 Prince was really great at looking after us!

For my first time eating here was pretty happy. The service was good and the waiter was very friendly. Our sushi selection was delicious and very fresh.

On our table stood flavorless prawns and flavorless calamari. And it's R100 per meal? Very disappointing! I won't be eating there again. I feel like I got robbed. Really flavorless.. Even the creamed spinach :(
