Review The General Store - Cape Town

Wow I love this small shop so much. Perfect for breakfast or light lunch. White coffee tastes amazing with somehow sweet burnt sugar scent. Moroccan meat ball was delicious. I will definitely go back for patisserie.

On a recent visit to Cape Town from Ireland we discovered this little gem on Bree Street , it became one of our favourite places to eat . Beautiful , healthy, delicious array of foods , the menu was different every day , really high quality and exceptional value for money, the owner and staff were wonderful, always smiling, happy and helpful . 5 stars to everyone involved.

Super good option for tasty and healthy food. Good coffee too. Was next to our hotel and was the best discovery of the week. We had breakfast once, I order coffee another time and got some take away food 2 days, even though I arrived late and they had ran almost of everything, got to try delicious lemon chicken with salad and pasta and another time breaded chicken with pasta. The magic of apparently simple stuff. Super nice the girl at the counter.

Stopped in for breakfast. Delicious croissants with eggs and bacon! Coffee was excellent, too.

Delicious, healthy and great value. Attentive and friendly staff. Fantastic coffee, beautiful food cooked with care and high quality ingredients (their granola is nicely balanced with lots of seeds and nuts and not too sweet, served with a generous portion of fruits and their avo toast is generous and delicious). We came here for breakfast every day during our stay in Cape Town and wish we had this place near home!

The best lunch downtown. The selection changes everyday so I'm not sure if I should describe my lunch in detail. There were 3 protein choices and about 8 salads. I had sumac chicken and the stuffed aubergine, a Greek salad, sauteed potatoes, and a lentil salad. All excellent. The carrot cake we couldn't resist was outstanding!!!!! Leave room for dessert even if you have to share.

The General Store is an institution, for exceptional home cooked food! Lots of fresh ingredients, vegetables and goodness! Each dish is made with love! Highly recommended for lunch! They have sharing plates, where you can share three veggie dishes! Absolutely delicious! 🌿🌿🌿🌿

Lovely food, creatively combined salads. For us, the meat selection was limited. Mostly a takeaway facility, with very restricted seating. Having said that, I feel it is perfectly placed to service the centre of town offices.

Incredible breakfast and brunch. We had the avo toast and the granola bowl and both were perfect. Service super kind. Came back twice.

The General store from outside is a place you may have just walked by (like me). It’s a gem. My colleague took me there for lunch once and I have been a fan since. The food speaks - Healthy does not need to be boring and bland..

Favourite place to have breakfast in Cape Town. Excellent daily salads that are often vegan-friendly, attentive staff, and charming atmosphere are all key characteristics that keep me coming at least 3 times a week and the salads selling out within a few hours.

Whether you a chocolate lover or not, the brownies sold at this lovely cafe are just to die for, by far the best I've ever tasted. The mixed veg salad is really good as well, love the flavours and texture of the salad

This is by far my favourite place to grab a quick, healthy lunch! Large varieties of prepared salads that you can mix and match and add a protein of choice with your selection. The salads are beyond amazing (I will walk an extra 5 min from our office block and pass Food Lovers, just to get lunch here). I prefer the way they prepare their red meats and fish over their white meats.

The cafe is tiny (I think it has fewer than 10 seats), so do a take-away on a nice day, and park on a bench in Thibault square.

Oh and their brownies!!!! Oh my soul, best brownie I've ever had....ever!

Update: returned for a takeaway salad! So so good!

Absolutely loved it. Had 3 amazing salads and some chicken -> It was incredibly good value for money, simple, quick and easy. Will be going back for sure.

I love this place - it's perfect for a quick, feel-good work lunch. The General Store makes beautiful, healthy food and the service is super friendly.

A really great fresh food store. The perfect place to grab a lunch.

Clean and current, this place offer a great alternative to fast food. Ready prepared meals, with a great selection. The kind of place you can eat at, every day of the week.

The only thing missing, is a glass of white wine to wash it down.

The coffee is superb and the brownies life-affirming.
While I have not yet tried the food, my colleague was blown away by it. Rating based on the friendly staff and amazing coffee.

I haven't eaten here, but I did order brownies to be delivered to my friend for her birthday. Not only did they arrive wrapped beautifully, but my friend also said they were the best she'd ever tasted.

After having the best brownie in Cape Town, I feel I need to go back for lunch.

It is theeee cutest little lunch spot, perfectly catering to those who want a quick healthy lunch take away option.

You have to make a plan to try them out.

The decor is so spot on and the waiters are great, very friendly!

Wholesome yummy salads, quick to grab but can have be bustling with human traffic during lunch breaks 😝 really enjoyed the sweet potatoes with cabbage, and the roasted vegetable salad was good

Found this little gem on an unlikely corner of Bree. Service was quick, which I needed on a lunch break, and food is delicious. I had string beans there which have reshaped my view of green vegetables. Since then I have indulged in the brownies too - just writing this is making me crave them.

I think the owner caters for functions too

Great little find in De Waterkant after stopping for lunch on the go while passing through town on business. The owner Collette is lovely and very helpful. I had a guava juice and fresh salad boxed to go which was fantastic. Great fresh food at great prices. Will definitely be stopping by again.

Great food! Made fresh and with passion. Such a healthy lunch alternative in the city. Very reasonably priced and run by such a friendly lady :) the stores decor is beautiful- simple with a couple twists. Really gives a fresh take on the western classic. A must try! P.s she bakes like a boss!

Such a cute and quaint restaurant! Lovely decor with really friendly staff. Heathy, harvest-style food. I had the best carrot cake I have eaten there!

Located in lower Bree street, this teeny weeny eatery offers eat-on-the-go yummy breakfasts, salads, hot veg & dishes of the day.
Portions are made to order and dishes are simpke, fresh & trendy.
Limited searing area so perfect for quick take away lunches.
General Store is a top take away lunch place. High quality of food. Healthy, kind and efficient services.
Neat space, even if not many tables.
Growing success so I expect them to become bigger, unless it is not the owner's philosophy.
VG coffee from Rosetta.

I was initially scared off by their prices, but now they are doing a selection of three salads for R35 - which is much more doable as a weekday lunch. The salads are fresh, with interested dressings, nuts and herbs in them, and they feel a lot healthier and fresher than supermarket salads. Coffee is great, too.

Popped in here for a quick coffee as I needed to kill some time in the CBD. Such a lovely, clean space. Stunning details of wood and plants make the little cafe feel so fresh. Coffee was delicious and I ended up leaving with a take away salad for lunch. They have a really gorgeous, diverse salad bar which changes daily. I got the small take away box with roast cauliflower salad with Danish feta, rocket and spices and was so impressed (by how much food they squeezed into the tiny box and by how yummy it was). So happy to have found such a gem!

Love it! Another stylish new coffee spot, this time on lower Bree street. Only seats about 8 pax, a tiny bit comfortable space. Great coffee and service and they serve lunch too, salads mostly. Oh, and the crockery is fabulous, all by Mervyn Gers.

Superb food for a weekday lunch. The options are heathy and delicious, and the coffee is very very good! Service is fast and efficient, friendly.

I was so excited to have a new lunch time restaurant close to the office!

The general store is beautifully decorated and boasts the most delicious salad selection. I went for the spinach and feta quiche with a selection of salads and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was!

Great lunchtime treat!

A lovely lil hipster spot! Usually at these places I feel out of sorts and today dressed to the 9s in my springbok supporter kit, I didn't. The food was awesome and everyone inside was friendly and keen to to chat about their unique offerings. Our breakfast was delicious, coffee was great (to be expected, it's Rosetta coffee) and we even bought some lemon grass cordial for our home made cocktails later. Loved it!

This is probably the ultimate hidden gem! You'll more than likely miss it if you blink while driving past, but you'll be rewarded immensely if you do spot it! They don't have a set menu just yet, but what they have on offer is fresh and delicious! I had the mushroom, bacon and poached eggs with a side of crunchy green beans and broccoli. It was absolutely superb! We also took home one of their home-made lemon and lemongrass cordials - equally as delicious!
