I've been a fan of the Chippies brand for decades now. As a student I used to look forward to my Prego steak or chicken roll which rolled by (pun intended) every Thursday or Friday with military precision. It was on my Prego roll that I started valuing the awesome powers of garlic. Years later, as part of my travels to the east, I also encountered the big fat garlic slices (or massive whole ones) as a normal part of one's diet. As a child my mother used to use a mortar and pestle to help create an aromatic garlic and ginger paste which soon disappeared into the wholesome tastes of homemade curries with basmati rice and childhood. Of course things change and that familiar welcome is no longer possible. I used to look forward to my weekly catch-up with "Mr Chippies". "How's school, the family is fine. So and so passed away. You're looking pale, you must take care of yourself, I need to change the light bulb today" and so on. Wonderful memories and at my age I tend to live with memories as much as the present. They don't accept cash and the young man at the till was very adamant that cash is outdated. Luckily I brought my purse along so had that lifesaving plastic π π
; otherwise my trip to Rondebosch might've been quite in vain. They offer snapscan, QR code thingimagigi and more, confirming that we are indeed living in the 21st century. But back to the Prego rolls and chips. Yes, it definitely reminded me of the previous century's rolls with subtle variations which I guess should be expected. The garlic slices are not as abundant as I remember it, but one can purchase some more Prego sauce π. Fabrica Do Prego is fast becoming one of my regular weekly visits - with my own family in tow. Must be in the genes.

Very nice Portuguese food. Not the cheapest. But very nice food.

Awesome staff who are super friendly, love the decor and vibe. Always the best in town.

This is in my top 10 foods ever eaten. That garlic prego sauce is unbelievable.

What a delicious hole in the wall. Small shop that makes you think of a classic chips or sandwich shop. Food is of very high quality.
Stem Prego, soft, medium rare even and bursting with flavour. Twice fried crispy chips and the best Prego sauce that I have ever tasted. A must visit

Best Prego Chicken I have had in Cape Town

In the last 5 weeks I have eaten the takeaway half chicken and chips more frequently than any other takeaway in my life. It is very good. I would gladly drink the peri-peri sauce.

For those who know karinichas in Durban and want a tasty chip roll. I highly recommend this pla e. The prego chip roll is well worth it. Truly tasty and very saucy.

We have been going to Chippies since before I can remember. They form a big part of my childhood memories, and now, when I am hungover on a Saturday, they are still my go-to! Their authentic Portuguese flavours are simply mouth-watering, and I could eat their Prego sauce with anything! I would recommend their Prego rolls, chicken livers, and lemon & herb chicken dishes. Or, you can just eat their chips with a yummy sauce.

Was in the area and decided to visit this little takeaway for the first time in years. When I was in high school, this was our favourite after-school hangout and, feeling nostalgic, I went back to buy what I'd always buy back then - a chiproll with extra prego sauce (R25 for the chiproll, R5 for the sauce).

It was served quickly but admittedly the prego sauce was a little different from what I remembered. Although I love garlic, there were large chunks in the sauce which can become quite overwhelming after a while. The chiproll itself was delicious though (probably the best chips in the area) and their portion sizes definitely haven't decreased over the years.

There's quite a bit of parking and, because it's mainly takeaway, the food is served quickly. There aren't many tables for sit-down as it's quite a small shop. No fuss and no frills. I'll be back but I'll probably try one of their other sauces next time.

What an awesome little hidden gem! Apparently its been here for years but I thank Zomato for this discovery. I was in the Rondebosch area a week ago in a Tuesday and was ravished! They have a Tuesday special where you get 2x Pieces of Hake or a portion of calamari with their famous chips. Wow!!! I almost finished the lot! I took the rest to the office for my colleagues to try. I would definitely be back for their other daily specials. A must visit!

C Prego is a no frills take out spot in Rondebosch. Their menu is geared toward chicken dishes but they do make a quick and tasty chiproll as a vegetarian option.

The chiproll is well stuffed with chips, and the bun is usually fresh. You can ask them to put their prego sauce in it for some added flavour. Beware of the chunky garlic pieces though.

Want authentic Portuguese prego?
Can you handle the heat?
Love copious amounts of fresh garlic?
Yes? Yes? Yes?
Then this place is the answer to your prayers.
Magnificently moist and tender steak marinated in prego sauce then slathered with some more on the grill. Fresh fries crisped to perfection and drizzled in salt & vinegar. Yummo
Wednesday special is 2 prego steak rolls with chips for R120. Great value.
Highly recommend their chicken too.

BigJoe

I really enjoy the chicken kebab with chips. Always well cooked the chicken tastes excellent and the chips are really good. Great for a takeout meal

This tucked away takeaway in the heart of Rondebosch is an excellent option when feeling too lazy to cook. Very friendly staff, good specials and the best chips in the area.

Tried chippies as I've been told by many locals that it's great. For me the sauce was really underwhelming, and tasted uncooked. Way too many big pieces of garlic which overpowered the roll. The chicken was still juicy though and the roll was fresh.

Yeah chippies rondebosch (c prego) is pretty average I would say. It has the potential to be better if for example they loaded up the chip portion and worked on making that delicious but ridiculously oily prego sauce a little.... Well..... Less oily. I'll slam a prego roll because it's conveniently close but it's pretty low on my list of go to take Aways. Saying that I'd say give it a go if u want something a little different.

I am really not a fan of Chippies Prego, it maybe due to what I ordered. I had a chips prego roll while my boyfriend had the steak prego roll. It was meant to be a cheat meal the day after a night out.

The chip roll was basically chips smashed together to form a patty, I would have preferred if they didn't do this and just let the chips stay in their shape. Their prego sauce also wasn't that great. On the other hand, my boyfriend liked his steak prego roll and had no complaints. I also have read reviews of people who like their food.

So my advice is try it for yourself, I might be in the minority who don't like Chippies Prego.

The ultimate cheat meal - Usually have chippies as a take away but last night we decided to sit in. Best idea ever - the Prego rolls tasted better because usually the sauce gets messy/oily with traveling which ruins the bun. They also have a great selection of salads. I had the potato salad it was creamy and delicious! Will definitely be back π

Awesome food, always good quality. Salads divine. Buy some of their sauces, prego sauce with chips Chicken kebab and chips a MUST. The best.

Always had a good experience at Chippies. As far as fast-food/take-away places go. Chippirs is great. Consistently good quality. I enjoy all their food, though occasionally in their generosity, their prego sauce with the chips can be a bit over-whelming.

I have had over a decade of great service, friendliness and meals at Chippies / C Prego . They never disappoint, from the bacon and egg toasted sandwich in the mornings, to my chicken prego or steak rolls lunch or evenings. The outstanding quality of the rolls/buns to the best quality chicken and steak only used. They always just deliver for an absolute bargain of a price. When in need of an awesome grub -- their grilled peri peri chicken and choice of salads really rocks. I cannot commend this place enough. Thank you for great service and awesome portuguese and thank G-d for your insane prego sauce. Gift from heaven!

The food is well prepared. The flavors are always consistent, year after year.

They have a good variety of fresh salads. There are banting meals available.

They have specials Sundays to Thursday.

Well worth the value and a visit.

Awesome food, never had a bad meal. Prices are very reasonable for the portion size. Keep it up :) .

Good local fast-food place, far better than the franchises.... Their Prego roll and chips hits the (unhealthy!) spot rather well, especially if spicy @ garlic-laden fare is your taste. Not to be mistaken for anything more than take-away.
Izzy Dagg
Chicken with peri peri sauce is quite good, definitely worth a try, but their prego steak rolls are the best. If you are looking for a quick lunch on-the-go or some takeaways for the family then this is your place.

Had the chicken prego, R38. Unfortunately not free-range, not that I was expecting it to be. Very basic place, with a simple fast food menu. The meal was ok, chicken was nicely cooked in a tasty prego sauce and which was the right amount of garlicy and spicy. Roll was a bit stale, unfortunately.

Chippies gets a 4/5 for their chips and bbq sauce and a 3.5/5 for the burgers. Without the glorious chips I wouldn't go there. But all in all its value for money. NB: ask the chips to be crispy --> trust me you won't regret it!
Byron
Decently priced Portuguese takeaway place. Not a good sit down place. Very basic with good food and great specials. 4 stars for the food and prices.
