Review Arts Cafe - Cape Town Central

Unplanned lunch at the cafe, and we ended up ordering takeaways of our meals as well. Both meals where delicious! Very impressed with the food. Service was good, always room for improvement. Decor needs a change and update. Overall we'll be back!

Quick service and a reasonable choice of basic restaurant food. Noisy though. We spoke to the host about that and he was thoughtful, promised to do something about it. Popular place to sit out side and drink the afternoon or evening away. We will certainly go again.

We have been to Arts Cafe quite a few times recently. The food were delicious and well presented. We did not wait long for our food. Staff were all friendly and very helpful. We will definately go there again before going to Arts Theatre for a show. As long as guests realise that this is a cafe and not a restuarant that you go eat at to make it an evening they will be satisfied too. The only small thing we found was the acoustics and I am sure that this will be attended to, since it was mentioned before.

Food always great and coffee awsome. Can take a while for the food but it's simply delicious. And the cook serving We have been so many times, a favourite spot

Great location for a quick bite to eat if you are going to the theatre. Just remember to reserve a table very small restaurant for a big venue. Value for money big portions and service was quick and efficient. Will eat there again when going to the theatre.

Waited an hour for our food which ended up either being raw or having missing ingredients. Manager was inexperienced and unable to offer any valid reason for the issues. Food didn’t arrive at the same time either, not that that matters when half of its inedible.

Where are the days when the restaurant stayed open until after the show!! It used to be such a nice place for artists and public to go to after a show. it used to be packed. Now they close at interval. Totally stupid.

Service was shocking. The restaurant is attached to the theatre building, they must know that people will come for a meal before a show, make provision for it! It took 20 minutes just to get a waiter to take our order. We had to flag someone down twice, being told by one waitress she can't take our order because we're not seated in her area and she'd get into trouble. We had no issue with that, just get our waiter, who eventually appeared. It took another 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive and the food followed about 20 minutes later. After eating we sat and waited for the bill, again, our waiter nowhere to be seen. The show was going to start in about 10 minutes so I eventually had to get up from the table to go and find our waiter to ask for the bill. At one point I threatened that if the waiter and our bill had not arrived when they made the last call to take our seats in the theatre, I would leave without paying. For the first time in my life I didn't leave a tip, I just left annoyed and harried, worrying I wouldn't be in my seat by the time they closed the theatre doors! The food is not bad, just make sure you go a minimum of 2 hours before a show for a meal and don't expect much in the way of service.

At what point does one refuse to pay a bill?

2 beers, a single gin and tonic took 20+ minutes to arrive at the table. Food order: 2 chicken burgers and a beef burger. After waiting almost an hour, 2 of the burgers arrived and we were told that the other meal will be out shortly!! 10 minutes later we were asked by our waitress ( who took this very simple food order) came and asked if we were still waiting on food????

The waitress then apologises and blames the manager who apparently placed the food order. The manager then comes to apologize stating that he hasn't a clue why he is being blamed as he has nothing to do with this....

We are going to pay this bill ( obviously ) but seriously, at what point can a customer refuse ???

Food: I ordered a large Flatbread. R70 - it consisted of 4 small slices. It was tasteless.
We didn't get cutlery or napkins with the food. I had to ask thrice.
Service: Not impressed
Seating: It's alright
I won't recommend friends here.

Read some terrible reviews, but tried anyway. The service was friendly and efficient. Some meals were good and some were average. All in all not a bad experience considering tight timelines to eat.

It's a pity that you can't award "no stars". 45 mins from order to food, 20 mins from order to drinks and the clock ticking to curtain time. They couldn't produce a milkshake on a Saturday evening because they had run out of ice-cream and the extra avo for a burger couldn't be done because they had run out of avos. This is not the first time we have experienced service like that at this restaurant and it was only because there is nothing lse close by apart from a Burger King that our group took a chance and ate there. The chicken schnitzels were dry, and the cheese sauce had maybe had a passing glance from a piece of cheese.....and that was provided in milk jugs to be shared between two as they didn't have any small individual jugs.Next time we'll eat at home first - maybe real burgers with amazing mixed fries from the Royale Eatery in Long Street - before heading for Artscape. Arts Cafe has a captive audience and anyone travelling from out of town to a show has little choice. I live in the city and have a choice: I'm voting with my feet (and wallet).

Very friendly staff, but shame the food... I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole again. Had the veggie burger and chips and the patty tasted like cardboard! It was practically inedible.

Update: had time to kill before a show and stopped by for a pot of tea (didn't order any food given my last experience here). Staff are really very friendly!

Update 2: had tickets to see the sound of music on a Sunday evening. It was a 3 hour production and with all surrounding restaurants closed, I had to grab something here before the show. Good news is they have a sushi chef and my friend said the sushi is decent. I still was not going to be adventurous and just ordered chips. The cafe was super packed, so we had to order it to go.

An inefficient use of space, terrible Service, the waitress kept rolling her eyes, the food was mediocre and expensive for what it was, we will never go back

Popped in at the Arts Cafe as I had some time to spare before a show. Chicken wrap was tasty, chips less so. Flat white was okay, nothing to rave about though. The red velvet cake was delicious and the service was in point. The show was awesome btw!

Not somewhere I would go unless I was going to watch a show at Artscape. The food is good value for money but definitely not fine dining. It is convenient and pleasant enough though to have dinner at before going to the theatre.

I suggest reserving a table as we had not and if seated at the bar you can only order one of two seafood platters. Which was good nonetheless. Their menu is reasonably priced and a nice option before a show.

This restaurant understands the challenge of satisfying theatregoers and it accomplishes this goal admirably. Every time we've been (at extremely busy as well as quieter times) we've had the same swift service with surprisingly tasty food and deals on drinks that twist your arm into seconds. Well worth a visit before or after a show.

Disappointing food. Went to Arts Cafe - it was convenient as we were going to a show at the Artscape. Lasagne was smothered in cheddar cheese and horribly salty -and it didn't taste like beef. The chicken burger & chips were OK. The Alfredo was also OK. Definitely not a restaurant of choice.
