Review Beijing Opera - Cape Town Central

As a season ticket holder I cannot praise the CTOC enough! The quality of their ongoing productions, impromptu pop up evening's (eg Young Blood Art Gallery) and world class quality of every production is worthy of a global stage! Whilst my favorite since being a child (1st opera Age 9 was Madame Butterfly 😉 ), is always to be suprised by the spectacular props and costumes, I have to aknowledge that the recent Pearl Fisher opera which hardly had a prop was equally spectacular! Well done CTOC and proud to support you always..a MUST for any local or foreigner visiting CT

Arrived at the restaurant at around 8 dead hungry and looking forward to some apparently delicious dim sum. We had a drink on arrival and ordered food around 8.15 or so. There were 2 or 3 other couples in the restaurant, it was a quiet midweek night. The waiter seemed like a nice guy and answered questions regarding the menu. We placed our order and then waited, and waited, and waited some more. My friend got one small dish at around 9.10. I figured the service had been shockingly slow but the other food must be coming, lets not worry about it. At around 9.30 there was no sign of any food, the waiter was just sat chatting with his friend like he had been for most of the evening so we asked about it. He told us he thought it would be 5 or 10 minutes more. I explained to him how long we had waited (he must have been aware having seated us) and I felt it was too slow given how quiet the restaurant was. He answered there had been issues in the kitchen. I was annoyed with him at this point, he could definitely have been proactive given how little he had to do during the evening. I asked him for the bill so we could settle while we ate, it was getting quite late. Upon receiving the bill a few minutes later (but no food still), the waiter had not entered most of my order, seemingly thinking it would be normal for me to wait 1 hour and 15 minutes for 1 small portion of dim sum despite my explaining how hungry I was when I arrived. At this point, not wanting to wait any more we paid for the one small dish we had received and left. This is probably the worst restaurant experience I can remember in a very long time. If you would like to be hungry and feel like an inconvenience to the staff I can wholeheartedly recommend Beijing Opera.

This is one of my favourite finds. I have always had a great meal. sure sometimes there may be a wait, but dim sum is best made to order and I think yours is the best!

Amazing time at this really cool spot! Waitresses were great Lisa Robertson, Yang and Cindy Satram! Food was absolutely fantastic, tasty, spicy and tasteful. Will definitely recommend this spot!

We were craving some Asian food on Friday night and having heard some things about the place, decided to give Beijing Opera a shot. We called to enquire whether there was a table for 2 (trying our luck a bit since it was already quite late on a Friday evening) and managed to secure a reservation for 8pm. We Uber-ed quite a distance from home all the way to De Waterkant anticipating some amazing dim sum. When we arrived the place was packed. Nevertheless, we made our way inside and were greeted with “Oh I’m sooooo sorry, but we’re fully booked...” to which we responded that we had just made a booking (with the same person who greeted us, mind you). After some seconds of awkward silence, the hostess mumbled something about giving our table away to some people who had arrived late for their booking. A rather superficial apology was given with a sort of ‘tough luck’ attitude. Absolutely no effort was made to rescue the situation. We were now left standing outside the restaurant wondering where we could grab some dinner. Establishments such as these, however popular, should not be supported as they do not value their customers. Had the situation been handled properly we might have even given them another try. Needless to say we will not be back due to their crappy attitude. Luckily for us we ended up at Izakaya Matsuri and had some delicious Japanese food and good service– craving sorted! If you want to be treated like you are doing a restaurant a favour by being there then by all means, go check out Beijing Opera. We certainly won’t be giving them a second chance.

Beware if you are vegetarian. I've been served meat dim sum on 3 different occasions despite informing the waiter that I'm vegetarian. Last night was the last straw though. The owner didn't seem concerned and sent a waitress to deal with the situation. I was told this was the first time this has happened.....hard to believe when I've had the same experience thrice.

Very authentic dimsum that reminds me of my Sunday yumchas I had as a kid, not the dodgy versions that lump Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indonesia and goodness knows what other Asian countries into one menu. Can't wait for them to start serving Cantonese congee and other surprises!

Still my favorite dim sum bar in Cape Town. However the service was very disappointing last night.

Terribly disorganised place. Made a reservation for two (?!?!only two) people on a friday night. Couldnt get the time we wanted but was happy with the time offered. Arrived there after driving all the way from the southern suburbs. As mentioned in previous complaints: only one waitress around. We had to push through the packed place to get to the kitchen in the back to ask where our table is. She said they have no space. No apology, no plan, no offer to help with a reservation someowhere else. She made our reservation, but she didnt know about two other online reservations?! She said we could wait, but has no idea how long. Rude staff, overcrowded and understaffed, disorganised. Doesnt really matter how good your food is, customers need to be treated with respect for their time. Especially on a friday night.

Been a fan since day 1 Atmosphere is always dope, chilled but professional. I can't think of anything bad to say

Delicious dim sum. Pared down decor with a great feeling. This is going to be a busy spot.
