Review Mimi's - Cape Town Central

Robert Uys
A cute eatery in Obz's centre. The coffee was okay and the muffins (although big) does not seem to be freshly baked. I did enjoy the freshly squeezed pineapple juice though. The store does offer free wifi and there is a toilet. Great place to meet for breakfast or lunch. It seems to have a loyal base of regulars. The store is dog-friendly.

I loved everything about mimi! We can for the vegan burger and it was more that we Could hope for. Best hands down. Cute intimate space, passionate and engaging chef. Will be back.

Nice cosy place with friendly staff. Really enjoyed the no7 gormate sandwich. All in all a good place to chill by yourself or with friends

They have great portion sizes and excellent freshly pressed juices which you can customize. Their breakfast portions are sizeable and croissants fresh. They have to if lunch options and great pastas for dinner. The general feel of the place and the atmosphere is cost and quirky. I love the chilled approach the service style has. They come highly recommended

Small and intimate feel. Good customer service and I enjoyed one of the staff members playing the piano. Thought that was cute. Had the vegan pasta and it was yum. Excited to go back to try their breakfast menu.

Very delicious food as well as a very friendly host!

Awesome local eatery, great salads and to-die-for sandwiches although the latter have gotten expensive! If you don't mind paying the price of a meal for a sandwich then go for them, they're delicious! Their new location makes for great people watching, people from all walks of life pass Lower Main Road. Dog friendly.

We had a voucher and in most cases trying this sort of thing was disappointing. In this case, good service and really good food was a great surprise Sitting on the pavement watching the passers by and being served by a friendly manager was excellent. I will return.
Gordon Konieczny
It is a nice cozy place. Owner, staff and guests are really open-minded and even share with you the smell (and maybe more) of the cucumber flavoured gin. It fits perfectly in the area.

For a place so small and modest, you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and service. Also worth a mention, is their fine selection of locally made Craft Beers. GIVE IT A TRY!

Probably one of the most delicious coffee cups I've ever enjoyed. Cute little place with colourful decor, very friendly service, and in the lively neighbourhood of Obz (Observatory)! Would recommend highly!

I've had both vegan ciabatta sandwich options which. together with the quaint interior decor, makes it a favourite and easy option to return to given the opportunity. Particularly recommended for a lazy Sunday lunch.

Best experience ever. Had breakfast with friend. Like the vintage look and coziness at the place.

The only nice thing to mention about the place is the setting and decor. Apart from that, I was very disappointed with the time it took to get my order as well as the quality and taste of the food. We redeemed a Hyperli coupon for 500g ribs (which were really not the greatest) and bought a side of veggies which were overboiled and tasteless. As the coupon requires that a beverage is purchased, we decided to get a bottle of wine, of which for most of the selections listed on the menu were not in stock, and settled for something that was in stock. The service and the waiter, or should I say dude were way below average. Firstly it didnt seem like there was a uniform, he spent most of the time hanging out with his buddies who seemed to have "visited" him at the other table. Once we were done eating we had to call him over to collect the plates, and between his manager bringing the meals to the table and finishing the meal, he had not come over on a single instance to check if "everything is okay".

I would probably rate the experience as 0.5 overall

This place surprised me on walk in. It is way smaller than what the pictures depicted. The warm beverages were not the best. It's a cute and intimate place for those looking for a cozy environment with average food.

First time I went there, the food was really good. Second time, there was very little on my plate and it was cold. You kind of have to be lucky. Good service though!

I ordered the biltong salad through OrderIn - Where did the biltong go? At R85 for a salad - I would expect to see more than 3 pieces of biltong.

From the exterior, this cafe is very unassuming and you might even miss it if you’re not looking closely! Inside, however, is a different story. The decor is quirky and when you walk in you immediately feel at ease and at home.
I went on a Wednesday evening and the music and vibe inside the restaurant were both great. Our waitron was also really friendly.

I ordered the thimble cottage pasta - feta, basil pesto and red pepper - and my friend ordered the linguine Alfredo without bacon - creamy mushroom pasta. Both pastas were really well presented, very tasty and flavourful and the portions were large! My pasta was, unfortunately, a bit undercooked and still a little hard.

Our food was served within 40 minutes which is really a lot longer than expected. We were given bread to tide us over after 35 minutes as we were super hungry but I really feel they should’ve warned us beforehand that our food would take so long... both waitrons did apologize after for the long wait though.

Parking is a bit of a nightmare, even in the middle of the week, so just be aware that you might have to circle around a bit before you get a spot. I’m a little hesitant to go back after the exceptionally long wait, though, but I am keen to try their breakfasts so if I find myself in the area again I’ll give them another try.

Waste of time, don't bother.

1.) Drinks order took 30 mins (they totally forgot until prompted)

2.) Waiter took our food order, 30 mins later the table that arrived after us, had their food. We didn't. When we waived the waiter over (the same one that took our order) to ask where our food was - we were asked if we had indeed ordered food (what?!?).

We promptly left and won't be back. Staff couldn't care less. They are stoned and living on another planet.

Rather go to Hello Sailor, Rust, Jerry's or any other establishment in the area - as they know what service is, Mimi's clearly doesn't!

- The obs locals that won't be back.

Food was GREAT! Was there on the 13th of July with my brother visiting from Kenya. Treated him to the burger with the yogurt and banana. Weird but incredibly tasty combination! Even took a picture with the chef :D... The 5 star review definitely is reserved for great food.

The best eating out experience we've had in a while! Great homely atmosphere, truly delicious food and absolute hospitality. We only ended up there by chance, left feeling so satisfied with every aspect of our visit and vowed to return very soon!

Ordered two smoothies and burger and gourmet sandwich on uber eats 5 minutes ago and got the most disgusting smoothies, tastes awful both of them, are not smoothies rather look and taste like dirty water. Beyond disappointed. Spent R100 on smoothies and it was awful

Rest of the food wasn't too pleasant either but edible.

Sweet little place. We came here for dinner one Friday night with the intention of using our entertainer app. We ordered fresh fruit juice which was great. I had the lasagna, which was also tasty. We also prdered a burger which delicious chips. Sadly one of ingredients in the vegan salad ordered was a little bit past it, but the owner did apologise and not add it to the bill. Would be keen to try it again, perhaps for a breakfast or lunch.

Another little stunning venue "Serendipitous" Cheap with good food sums it all up.

Normally little tucked away restaurants like this one have a limited menu, however we had an amazing selection and we were pleasantly surprised by the outstanding service we received from the staff.

That's all, plain and simple..... This one gets a thumbs up from me

Charming coffee shop with a great selection of fresh vegan food. Loved the vegan burgers and tahini milkshakes. If only this type of whilesome and healthy food was available in Johannesburg!

Cute lil shop in lower main in Observatory. Very tasty coffee and breakfast. Calm vibes and friendly staff. Their playlist is also very on par with my life. Cause they don't play Jack Johnson... I hate Jack Johnson.

A very nice, simple restaurant perfect for the tight student budget. Nothing fancy, but the setting screams a social, homey and quaint environment for a great group study sesh or catch up with friends. Very nice selection of interesting milkshakes. However, I was a bit disappointed with the quality of mine. Really competent service performed by friendly waiters.

Really cool little coffee shop situated in Obs. Great Vegan burger and range of wraps, soups and sandwiches. And the waiter gave 3 of us free coffee for playing Pokemon! Check them out!

Mimi's is a charming and laid back restaurant on the busy road of lower main Rd. Come if you want friendly staff, cheap and delicious food or for a boardgame! The perfect spot for a student with a budget. Or for a family! Also serving spring water that they collect themselves from Newlands forest! With great vegetarian and vegan options as well!
The best vegan burger in Cape Town!

(apologies for the half eaten picture)

Loved this cute cafe in the middle of Obz
Easy comfort food, vegan and gluten free friendly so caters to everybody's needs...
Had a delicious vegan burger with crispy sweet potato wedges... My friend have the cheese burger..
Great stuff and vibe...
Warm matcha latte that was so tasty...
Really great place

I found chewed gum stuck to the bottom of my sandwich. It was discussing! The owner then tried to get out of it by saying she doesn't know where the gum came from because her staff isn't allowd to chew gum... Like I put it there!? After further probing it turned out that one of them was chewing gum and it ended up in my food. Terrible experience all round! Never go there!
Megan Bellinger
Cute little place. Nothing fancy, it is Obs after all :)
Met a friend for lunch, and we we were almost the only customers, but maybe that's because it was a weekday early lunch.
We both chose sandwiches, which they have a load of options! I chose a smoked chicken, avo and pineapple, while my friend chose a falafel, avo and tomato one. We both enjoyed ours. I had a cappuccino which couldve beem better, but it came with a piece of orange biscotti, yum!
Good friendly service too.
Alex Van Eeden
Really great coffee and breakfast! Has a lovely vibe and is great for a catchup with a friend, or for sitting down and getting an essay done.

At first I thought Mimis was just another hippie coffee shop in the middle of Observatory and it is. But what a vibe, great music and great tasting coffee( takes awhile but worth it ).
The service can take awhile but hey, IT'S OBS. So if you're in the area, have some time to send emails and judge shoeless hipsters.
Check them out.
Zanel
Really interesting little cafe with what looks like a mini library upstairs. My cappucino was really good and so was the biscotti that came with it. Waiters were friendly and menu has some tempting desserts at affordable prices.

That priceless home-cooked taste and presentation was the most enjoyable part of having breakfast at Mimi's.. Oh and for 55 rand (not inc. tip) you can order eggs benedict that comes with a free coffee!

Service is average, no real sense of urgency but the food made up for this.
Hadassah Laing
Although the ambiance of this place was homey and the food average, the poor service really put a damper on the whole experience. Not only did the waiter get our orders completely mixed up, he was visibly distracted and was overall unhelpful.

The food itself wasn't terrible. The sandwiches were nice, but not exactly as advertised (i.e: the tomatoes were not sundried).
Lynsay Sampson
The restaurants got a cool, buzzy ambience and service is friendly . The decor is bohemian, but not the chic kind. We had the deluxe breakfast - while the portion is very generous, the food lacks flavour; everything on the plate seems to have been boiled - incl. the bacon & mushrooms.
On the upside, I've had their crumpets before which is quite nice.
Vicki Heard
Worst restaurant experience in quite some time. Quaint ambiance but cold inside - entrance door open at night in winter. Service cold, in fact, shockingly bad, ribs ok but unbasted and when requested, basting sauce arrived cold. chips served cold, chickpea salad the most uninteresting salad I've had in ages. With so many good restaurants nearby, there's absolutely no need to waste one's hard-earned money on this one. Will never go back. Yes, it was THAT bad in every way.
Ryan Harrison
Really homey atmosphere, looks a bit like the upstairs room where you keep all your books. Very friendly staff that welcome you. Service was very quick and I can recommend any of their sandwiches. I had a nice breakfast there as well. Fairly priced and a convenient place to pop in for a quick bite or a coffee.
Ryan Mulders
Quaint cafe in Obs, great for a quick lunch. I had a burger here that was not bad and fairly priced. The ambience is quirky and there's even a small library upstairs. I found the owner to be a nice and friendly lady.

I'm still rather perplexed from the dinner I just had at Mimi's. Went there with my brother to grab a bite. Made reservations but got there & my table was not available. Then we ordered ribs which to about 25mins. The ribs looked cheap & horrible and I saw a mile away it was those pick n pay looking pre packaged ribs. They tasted horrible - cheap pork dipped in sauce. Shockingly they use those frozen pre packaged chips from the grocery store too. The waiter, nice chap btw, asked me how my food was & I was honest and told him horrible & y I say that. Then the manager came to apologize & admitted they use low quality food so that they can keep the prices down - and the students don't mind the bad quality. Needless to say I was speechless. I am hoping to still wake up from this nightmare. 1 word for this place - YUCK!

Tell someone!

This is the definition of a cute and quaint coffee shop with its eclectic interior and a wide array of light food with a few options for lunch.

I ordered the breakfast smoothie and mmmhm it was delicious! Every bite (warning: sipping through the straw will not work) was filled with the perfect amount of crunch from the muesli. I thought I wouldn't be able to finish the entire thing (the serving portion is large!) but I drank it to the bottom and wish I had more.
Trevor Pontes
Really quaint setting. Service was great. Had the breakfast special. One egg, one slice of bacon, fried tomatoes plus rye bread. Good value as it comes with coffee.

Such a cute, quaint lil café on one of my favourite streets in Cape Town, lower main :)) .. Their breakfast is delicious - try the bacon, banana flapjacks - the generous helpings are and added bonus! The freshly squeezed juices are a must try !!
Schneider Elisabeth
Very nice. Burgers are very good. Service is good now too. And the owner Vivian is adorable.
liz

Kindof dissapointed by skimpy breakfast which used to be more genourous. Not much for the price... Hope they step it back up to previous levels

Moroccan seems to be the thing to have here, and as the chef is from Morocco it's bound to be tasty! Funky Obs vibe combines to make Mimi's a cool hang out before hitting the clubs in downtown. The front right table hidden in the glass front is definitely the best seat in the house where you can watch the hub bub of Obs. The owner is very welcoming and ensures that a great experience is had by all!
Kevin Brooks
Some really interesting Moroccan food with attentive service from Matthew. We really enjoyed it.

I really like Mimi’s.

The décor is rustic with lots of different types of art used. A mixed matched type of look. They have pulled it off really well. I love these types of restaurants. My boyfriend got a Mikes delight double thick milkshake which is made up of Chocolate, Peanut butter and Banana.(He said it was the best milkshake has had in a long time.)
It really is hard to choose what to order for breakfast, everything sounds so delicious. I ended up having the Scrambled egg, salmon and avo and my better half got the Eggs Benedict.
Our breakfast was very good. The Eggs Benedict presentation was a lot more appealing than my meal and that is the only fault I have.

Even though it was breakfast time we could not resist getting some chocolate cake to take home.
Thank you for the lovely time

I am very eager to return

***Meal Suggestion: Eggs Benedict***

I didn't put make up on this morning...too lazy...when I got to the office I thought I could turn my bare face into a virtue and post a #nomakeupselfie for cancer awareness, but the morning ran away with me and I had a lunch date with Philip, who very often sees me without make-up, so I didn't bother. We went to Mimi's and I realised that I would have felt completely out of place with make-up, since it is a no frills, no GHD, barefoot kind of place. Just outside the restaurant sat a girl with a white mouse on her shoulder. Our very sweet waiter sold us on the burgers, handmade on the premises, and they were indeed very good. The prego sauce which we opted for with the burger was even better! Their Moroccan offering on the board and menu looked very good, but is only available in the evening. And to round off my au natural day, I had a look around Komati Foods next door for some health and wellness supplies.

This is an atmospheric, down-to-earth, well-priced cafe-bistro in the heart of the suburb, close to a couple of backpacker joints. A good spot to peruse the paper, read your book, enjoy your coffee and take in the day. Seating both inside and outside. I was served by two very sincere and helpful waitresses. Prices are great. I had a cheese/tomato/onion omelette, and made a couple of special requests about its preparation, all of which the waitress/manager were happy to oblige. Both the cheese and the tomato were a bit acidic, however, which rather spoiled the overall dish.

Good food and great service! Had a great time at Mimi's. For a few moments it felt like I was sitting at a cafe somewhere far away. Highly recommended.

Popped in here for a quick bite to eat with some colleagues and it was quite entertaining...

We sat on the busy sidewalk just watching all characters from all corners of the earth walk by, it was fun and relaxing, we had such fun in our lunch our that we were revitalized and energetic to continue our day.

Food was yummy and perfectly portioned for a lunch time meal, prices were very well worth the food and very reasonable. Service was great, friendly and very helpful staff, the waitress got one of the wraps wrong but that was rectified in no time...

Would definitely recommend Mimi's for a quick bite to eat...

We went for Sunday breakfast. Services was very very slow - we arrived at 10h30ish and waited almost an hour to get our food. Mimi's manager should have informed us before we ordered our food that they had problem with their stove not working. My son ordered eggs benedict which was supposed to be served on an English Muffin but instead it came on some toast. The waiter apologized and said he forgot to mention this -pity as there is nothing worse than disappointment. I also notice that they charge R4.50 for boiled water... at all other restaurants there is no charge for boiled water. Orange juice is complementary, but we had to ask the waiter. So either lack of training of waiters not knowing the menu. Doubt we will go back.

Mimi’s is a delightful coffee shop with a wide variety of light meals, desserts and drinks. I ordered a Mike’s Delight milkshake and was pleasantly surprised – it was probably the most amazing thing I have ever had! A double thick milkshake with banana, chocolate and peanut butter. If you have a sweet tooth, a Mike’s Delight is definitely a must when visiting Mimi’s. Mimi’s has a chilled vibe and very friendly staff. Do yourself a favour and visit this jewel in the midst of observatory.

We were having a walk-about in Observatory one very, very hot afternoon and happened to stumble upon Mimi's, a small and very unassuming little restaurant. The plan was only to have some cool drinks, but in the end the menu descriptions enticed us to have a double thick chocolate milkshake, which was exactly as described - double chocolate and thick! Mike's Delight was something to plan a new year's resolution around as it is simply the most divine milkshake (Chocolate, banana and peanut butter!) I have ever tasted - I refused to share a single sip! Don't let 2014 go by without having one of these. We also had the Chocolate volcano (an afternoon filled with chocolate!) served with ice cream, that was equally delicious. So, don't judge this little café by its cover - taste surprises await inside!

I have always been very lyrical about my fetish with breakfast foods and my never-ending quest to find the most delicious breakfast spots - and Mimi's does it for me. Having a stunning cup of coffee while staring into the mist of Devils Peak in the artsy streets of Observatory is inspiring. On more than one occasion, the Mimi's staff have opened at 7 am to accommodate my early morning cravings before work.
Their black board specials are insane. I once bought a cup of coffee and got free pancakes! The staff is also extremely pleasant! LOVE this place!

My friends and I have been going to Mimi's since our arrival to Cape Town. They have a great selection of food, our favorite are the sandwiches, especially number 14 on whole wheat :-) breakfast is also very delicious! The staff are lovely and the prices are reasonable! Mimi's also has free wifi, you should try Mimi's for a nice relaxed breakfast or lunch!
