Review Mulberry & Prince - Cape Town Central

Tondani
The space is small and reservations are very important. We really enjoyed the food, the portions are generous and we enjoyed the drinks too. The space is small so it may feel loud but they can accommodate many people as they also have a bar area. Would recommend as an experience when in Cape Town.

I've never tasted a breakfast quite like this. My avo on toast with salmon was on another level, I'm gluten intolerant, and the waitress suggested their hashbrowns, oh! what a well-balanced, scrumptious meal this was. My husband enjoyed his full English breakfast 😋 and delicious coffee. We like the interior and ambience. It's definitely on our permanent breakfast spot list. It's definitely worth a try.

Quaint place to visit with OUTSTANDING food. Highly recommend the fried chicken and waffles. The food was so good we took leftovers home and ate them cold in our hotel. Worth it! 😂 The servers were extremely kind and made sure we had everything we needed and wanted. Can’t wait to visit again when we return to South Africa. This is now our favorite breakfast spot there.

I've been waiting and wanting to go to this restaurant for breakfast. Heard and read so many great reviews, and they were definitely spot on. It met all my expectations. Loved it! We were welcomed kindly, seated and introduced to our waitress, Jennifer, who was absolutely delightful. She was on top of everything, and really cool. I had a mango mimosa for the first time and was really good. We waited a bit for our food but it was DEFINITELY worth the wait. Tried the most popular dishes on their menu and I know why these are so popular. The portions were so big - real value for money.

Literally the best avocado đŸ„‘ toast I’ve ever had and best hollandaise sauce I’ve ever had as well. Went here for brunch with a friend and left incredibly satisfied. Their food is bursting with flavor. Highly recommend. I’ll be back!!

A Must-Try Breakfast Spot in Cape Town! Mulberry & Prince is a must-visit breakfast spot in Cape Town. My recent experience there was nothing short of exceptional. The blueberry pancake was incredibly fluffy and bursting with fresh sweetness, while the "Eggs Your Way" dish impressed with perfectly cooked eggs and delectably tasty hash potatoes. With numerous breakfast options in Cape Town, Mulberry & Prince stands out as a must-try destination. The impeccable service, cozy ambiance, and delicious food make it a memorable dining experience that should not be missed.

Mulberry & Prince has truly found a way to become a breakfast bastion in Cape Town, and rightly so. It’s as great as pictures and articles tout. To be sure, it’s an aesthetic haven for the visually-minded foodies and photo-takers ready to capture their next great Instagram post. Specializing in American-style breakfast and brunch cuisine, the menu reads as a concise, curated collection of plates per dietary requirement. I tried both the Shally’s Pancakes, as well as the Avo on Toast, and while not groundbreaking brunch menu options, these vegetarian dishes were made quite different to the norm – and my tummy and tastebuds were better for it. As a lover of leftovers, let me just state that the pancakes are lovely even when reheated the next day at home. Mulberry & Prince understands the deep and abiding devotion to coffee, that Capetonians have. Their coffees (from Cortados to Americanos) are made with beans sourced from the famed coffee bean roastmasters brand ‘Rosetta Roastery’.

Have been here twice already with plans for more visits. This was the first restaurant me and my dad tried in Cape Town and it was picture perfect. The staff is superb, so so friendly. The space is very aesthetically nice and clean, and the good food and drinks seal the deal. Easy 5 stars. Recommend their polenta porridge and their avocado toast but can’t go wrong with anything off the menu.

Love this spot — comfort food brunch done exceptionally well. I went on a Sunday and even though I didn't have reservations they found me a table outside, which was perfect for their Sencha tea, and eggs benny.

Brilliant vibey spot for breakfast and brunch. Must book as it gets busy! Great service, generous portions and delicious food! Come hungry 😉 must try items are the berry pancakes with maple syrup butter and the truffled scrambled eggs with burrata.

I had a pretty good experience here. I'm a big fan of chicken and waffles, so naturally I was going to order it. We arrived at 11 without a booking because their system was offline, unfortunately we had to come back at half 12 because they were full (small place, could definitely do with a venue upgrade). The food was quite nice. Eye-watering prices for breakfast to be honest, especially because I'm not sure whether the rest of the experience matches up with the prices. Their chicken had a decent, not amazing, coating. Meat was cooked well enough, though a tad bland and probably could have done with 4 more minutes in the fryer. Their waffle was quite nice, though I think I've had better. My kid had their pancakes which were actually really nice. Atmosphere is OK. Nothing to write home about. Tad cramped for my taste, but I can see the appeal for those with their fingers on the city pulse. (a tik tokers paradise) All in all, I probably wouldn't race to go back there, but wouldn't be mad if I found myself back there.

Mulberry and Prince has been on my list for a while and I’m so glad I got to try it! Shally’s Pancakes were absolutely incredible! It’s very pricey and the coffee wasn’t as amazing as expected, hence the 4 stars. Bookings are required!

Great food. Lovely atmosphere and staff. 5 stars plus

This restaurant lives up to the hype in terms of how good the food is. I enjoyed the brunch so much I went back, the service is ok and it’s better to book ahead as it’s a small place and popular. It is on the pricey side, so be prepared to spend on average R450 for 2 people on a meal each and a drink. The pancakes were the fluffiest I’ve ever had, and the Turkish eggs and M&P Benedict were freshly prepared and delicious. It closes at 2pm so keep that in mind when booking. Service 4/5 Food 5/5 Ambiance 4/5

Absolutely delicious and adorable! Don’t be in a hurry but the food is really good!

Everything was excellent. I liked the Turkish eggs and french toast

Try your best to reserve a table... They dont allow you to just walk in. The food was really good and came out pretty quick . I really enjoyed the chicken and waffles ... The hash Browns are packed with flavor... I just really wish they had a better booking options to reserve a table... if there are only 2 of you and the date you book says they are booked for 2 guest what do you do?? Book for what’s available a table for 4??

Best Benedict I've had in ages <3 We did find the english Muffin a bit heavy, and the sausage on the full breakfast had an unpleasant spiciness to it (the kind that repeats on you for hours after). However, all in all it was a great success with perfectly cooked eggs all round those delicious little potato devils and lovely creamy Hollandaise... YUM! Will definitely be back.

I visit this little spot every so often for their Sunday brunch and its definitely a favourite. They've been super consistent in terms of service and food. I particularly love their sweet options for brunch - found the savoury dishes a bit over salted/spiced and not as fascinating, but my partner differed in this opinion. Judge for yourself. They capture that American style brunch to perfection, but with a beautiful decor experience. Portions are large, be warned, but also go there hungry. Their pancake stack and waffles are the best you'll find in Cape Town.

Had been meaning to try this place with my friends for a while. Venue lives up to its hype in terms if its decor - its beautiful. It is advised to book as it is quite small. The food was good not great i think the hash brown was amazing. my friends enjoyed their chicken and waffels as we were told its the most popular meal . My only issue is the wait - we waited far too long for our food so it will be a while before we give it another try .

What a lovely place, revealing surprises as you head through those pink doors. The meals were tasty and hearty, their brunch menu is divine.
Carmelita Dos Ramos
Had a high expectation for this place. Decor is superb but the food is way hyped up, its average. Coffees and drinks price is normal but food is expensive. Service is also okay. Overall it was a pleasant experience. Pancake stack and French toast stack is R100 which to me is expensive. Cute place for a girls brunch or a date spot.

It's all for the gram really! Pretty looking, awesome decor. But the service is poor - we made a reservation for the bar seating (as their tables were fully booked). But we were ignored most of the time, I suppose it's because we didn't have a table number and no one was allocated to us. Food was av! I had the pancakes... not horrible but nothing to ride home about!
Jen
Atmosphere was bland. Everything we had was too salty and overly spiced as you couldn’t even taste the real food! Would not recommend at all.
Sandy Salerno
I would give it 5 stars except for sound level which at times made conversation almost impossible but the good is stellar. We ordered everything on the menu and the 5 of us were impressed by every dish. The chef is from Brooklyn NY USA which is my home town. Mulberry and Prince is an intersection in Little Italy in NYC and I know it well. We live in San Francisco and this restaurant would be a hit there.
Jasmine Chieh-Yu Ho
Went for their sunday brunch. Their food is amazeballs, hands down to their chicken and waffle (some even says it is far better than the ones from another restaurant on Regent Road). Watch out for the portion because they are way more than enough for your tummy, we cannot even finish the super light and fluffy pancakes. Love their mimosa. The service was friendly but do gradually get slower when customers start pouring into the restaurant.
Tamlyn Springer
Very overpriced and overrated. Food was presented beautifully but nothing to write home about. Only three tiny meals and a bottle of wine and a bill of over R700 to which we left to get actual supper elsewhere

Three of us had the chance to try the new menu of this 2017 eat out nominee. We were once again satisfied with the unique yet tastefull flavours and the elegent way in which these dishes are plated and served. These two chefs never fail to dissapoint and it is my privilege to dine at such a high standard restaurant - one that always impress! Congratulations on your 2017 eat out nomination- it is indeed well deserved.

Stunning space. Amazing staff. And the food is so delicious and such an experience. I was there for their American style breakfast, and it was delicious

A fantastic dining experience, delicious, beautifully presented and interesting plates of food, with both our wines being spectacular as well. Guaranteed stimulation for serious foodies. Simplicity brings out the best of the star ingredient. The beef tartare and the burrata cheese were our personal favourites. Very nice and warm welcome, one of the chefs offered to help with menu choices as well as serving and describing the dishes and the individual elements. Great service. Spacious and therefore private setting, leaving us free to enjoy ourselves for an entire evening outing. Not cheap but definitely worth every cent. Highly recommended. Thank you for being the highlight of our Cape Town visit!

If you are looking for an instagram worthy place, Mulberry & Prince is it. With a minimalist interior with obvious notes of millennial pink (a dream) and touches of beaten copper and rose gold it's a gem.

The food looks just as pretty as the interior and is worth every bite and penny. We had chicken and waffles with authentic hot sauce (not Tabasco) swag. If you have a sweet tooth try the cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting a melt in your mouth experience...

Mulberry & Prince give you actual crockery in pretty shades of pink. A great place to become a regular (if you have those kind of coins) with very friendly wait staff and owners.

Pay them a visit, truly worth it. 💗

Sunday Brunch Goals đŸ„‚đŸ˜» A new offering at Mulberry & Prince is their scrumptious and generously served brunch menu! My friend and I shared the Toad in a Hole and Brioche French Toast (the best I've ever had đŸ€€) Absolutely delicious food, attentive service and beautiful decor make for the perfect Sunday treat!
Didi Tsitsi
We went for the first of their Sunday Brunches, and were greeted with a complimentary mimosa. The service was absolutely lovely, warm and gracious. I had the Toad In the Hole which was gorgeous, and my friend has the pancakes which were light and fluffy (and abundant!- definitely shareable).
The aesthetic is clean and calm, modern yet not to sharp. I look forward to returning for more!

This has to top my list of the most anti-climatic culinary experiences of my life given the hype been made about this place.

Look I don't care about paying a steep price for good food, but R150 for scallops that can fit into a espresso cup or R250 for a small rib-eye steak dusted and butchered by a Lucky-Star anchovy crust is just not on.

That being said the restaurant is beautiful but really don't understand what the rave is about when Cape Town has so many fantastic culinary treats.
Matthew Rosenberg
Tasty food and good service but incredibly overpriced for the portion sizes and then to be told that jugs of tap water are limited to one per customer due to the drought?
Mbali Msimang
I almost forgot to do this M&P review
Guys this restaurant is beautiful. They are open from 6pm-10pm and I really wish they also did daytime hours because I suspect this would be a great place to sit in at lunch time.

Anyway the service was amazing
And the dishes were really flavorsome.
The space was glorious and quiet.

I really recommend you try the fillet but in all honesty everything we ordered had really amazing flavours. My only critique would be the portions perhaps. The very limited menu, which is also a bit difficult to understand at first glance 'tapas style" but not really priced for you to order 2/3 dishes if we're being real. We ordered three which all tasted great (justifying the limited choices) but it truly felt like just a teaser.

Nonetheless,
I don't think trying this place out will upset you at all.
4 stars well deserved.

By far the best restaurant I've had the pleasure of eating at in Cape Town so far. The restaurant itself has a beautiful minimalist decor and a gorgeous interior brick. The food is beyond fantastic- I went with a group of four girls and we shared several dishes of which the highlights were the sardine chips, the beef tartare, and the honeycomb panna cotta. The combination of unique flavors in each dish were utterly complimentary and divine. The service was also impeccable đŸ‘ŒđŸ» servers were attentive but not overbearing. Perfect place for girls night, date night or even for a work dinner. I will definitely be back and will be recommending to everyone.

This article first appeared in House & Leisure Online and is entitled “A Taste of New York at Mulberry & Prince”. Here I’ve adapted my original post slightly in order to make it blog-relevant.

When I have the opportunity to get out of the kitchen and sample of the sort of food that has placed Cape Town on the global map as an epicurean destination, I do so with enthusiasm. Cue an intimate weeknight dinner at Bree Street’s most recent addition, Mulberry & Prince.

Unquestionably Instagrammable, this contemporary cafĂ© is Cape Town’s answer to the Soho-style eatery. Dusty pink double doors lead one into an interior that is in equal parts tasteful minimalism paired with retro Scandinavian pieces in a colour palette of grey marble, muted pink and reflective bronze. Through the dĂ©cor and the food, co-owner Cynthia Rivera has brought her native New York to the inner-city space while her business partner Cornel Mostert has added a local element that makes Mulberry & Prince such an enjoyable option for dinner.

A modern take on menus, theirs features a tasting theme – patrons each make a selection of two to three plates and participate in sharing them among one’s party so as to experience the menu in it’s entirety. And with dishes such as Seabass Crudo, Caramelized Onion Dip with Trout Roe and Sardine Chips with a horseradish crĂšme fraiche, ingredients are celebrated for their simplicity by allowing their flavour to shine through. A personal favourite of ours were the Sardine Chips – a paper-thin slice of potato threaded with a whole sardine and deep-fried – followed by the Straciatella with a kale salsa verde and charred ciabatta slices. While the former was full of umami notes from the sardine, the latter was a celebration of creamy buffalo mozzarella topped with a zingy citrus kale dressing and eaten off smokily blackened toasts.

Still sure to recommend local, the wine list is carefully curated – we drank Intellego Wine’s “Pink Moustache” 2016 Syrah and Cinsaut blend – a fruity and yet dry rosĂ© that perfectly completed the main course of Rainbow Trout with pickled turnip and almond milk. Their menu changes every few weeks to incorporate seasonal ingredients so you’re unlikely to experience the same meal twice – a detail that I feel fits in with their New York City philosophy to be a restaurant that will never rest on it’s laurels but rather keep adapting and bettering themselves.

Treat this as a spot for a special occasion as our bill was rather on the steep side – but as a firm believer in quality over quantity, Mulberry & Prince is unquestionably worth it.

This was my first experience of Mulberry & Prince and I have always wanted to try it.
And I soooooo was NOT disappointed.
Every bite a mouth orgasm! I have become a regular overnight!

Our second visit to Mulberry & Prince was an absolute treat. Their food was flawless and the variety of flavours, textures and colours made it a sensory experience we'll never forget.

Some highlights included the Buffalo mozzarella, the beef tartare and the lamb ribs which just slipped off the bone and practically melted in our mouths. The kohlrabi salad was refreshing and a nice change between meat/cheese dishes. The ricotta dumplings were also a hit and the perfect balance of soft and creamy.

By the time dessert arrived we didn't have much space but that didn't stop us as the chocolate cake was so more-ish - such a light texture and subtle hints of Maldon salt to accentuate the dark cocoa flavour. My personal favourite was the pannacotta and hibiscus vinegar. The service made us feel relaxed and at home whilst still attentive and answering all our questions. Really, exceptional job Mulberry and Prince team.

Food is excellent. Complex, intricate flavours. Everything is prepared with the utmost consideration. You'll want to order a variety of dishes so that you can truly experience the culinary excellence on offer. The lamb ribs were my favorite - Melt in your mouth decadence! The Restaurant itself is clean and the decor is just dreamy. Such a welcoming, charming little spot. It can be a bit expensive because you need to order a few dishes to really experience the offering properly but it's definitely worth it! Loved every bite! Booking is essential.

Beautiful restaurant but that is were it ends.

The owner acts as if eating at his restaurant is a privilege.

They allow you to bring 1 bottle of champagne at an exorbitant corkage of R100, we were a large group and simply asked for them to make an allowance of perhaps a second bottle, this request was met with arrogance and rudeness.

As I do not drink much alcohol I asked the waiter if there were any non-alcoholic options to which I was told no, so if you don’t drink be prepared for an evening of water.

We had also paid a large deposit to secure our reservation and much to our surprise this is not then deducted off the bill, but rather refunded once you leave. This simply makes no sense at all.

Unless they get their act together regarding customer service I simply cannot recommend it, which is sad because the concept is nice.

I had an amazing night here! The food was exceptional! the highlights were the dumplings, tartare, and prawns! the prawns are served with a little bowl of hot water and lemon to wash your hands afterwards which we all thought was clever! only downside was the service. we didn't see our waitress but the restaurant was very busy and it looked like she was the only waitress on the night but slie who is the food runner took care of us and he was very friendly. highly recommend! and will be back very soon

Went for dinner at this amazing little place on 30 July 2016. Such a cute little restaurant with amazing staff. Our waitress, Casey, knew exactly what their restaurant serves and could explain everything on the menu in great detail. Food was amaaaazing!! We had a couple of the dishes off the menu and the lamb ribs were my favorite. We had the chocolate cake and panacotta for dessert.. WOW..!! Amazing food, amazing staff, amazing restaurant. The fact that we could bring our own wine ( as they do not have a liquor license yet) was actually a big plus as it knocks off quite a bit on your bill. Everyone should give this place a try... You won't be dissappointed at all!!
Frantisek Pour
Amazing food which I thought beats other foodie places in town - great service and very reasonable value. Tried almost every dish on the menu and could not find anything we didn't like. The only downside was their booking system - they don't respond to emails if fully booked.
Cape Town Diva
Amazing discovery- a new restaurant on Pepper Street in the CBD. Really excellent food- small plates enough for two to share-choose a variety of starters and mains. Don't be greedy though as plates are filling. The risotto dumplings are divine. For now take your own wine, until their liquor licence comes through. Great service from Casey, Danni and Sly.
Robyn Silverstone
Thoroughly enjoy the evening and the food. Portion size was amazing and 3 of us shared 5 courses which left us super satisfied. Dessert was a lovely round off. Highly recommend

Shockingly poor and arrogant service. Made for an unpleasant evening. Decor is beautiful but they have concentrated more on this than creating a good ambience. Disappointing

My Friends and I had the privilege of dining at Cape Towns new hot spot, Mulberry & Prince. This is such a unique and special place with the interior and friendliness of the staff adding to the experience. The menu is interesting yet exciting with ingredients I could not even pronounce. We wanted to try a bit of everything and ended up doing so. The food was absolutely incredible. The flavors are so interesting you cant help to order something else just to find yourself enjoying the next plate even more. The concept of shared plates encourages a spontaneous and communal vibe, which we really enjoyed. I had a memorable time at Mulberry & Prince with the food being the highlight of the evening. This kitchen and bar is a little gem right in the heart of Cape Town. These two young Chefs has amazed me in so many ways. Mulberry & Prince is worth the visit, and though all of us can't visit New York ourselves, Cornel and Cynthia managed to bring a piece of it; combine it with the mother city and deliver a fantastic creation like non other!

We had some drinks with friends across the road and on our way to our car we walked past a pink door on Pepper Street and saw some people in the window having something to eat. It looked quiet from the outside but as we entered we walked right into a jam packed restaurant. We asked if they might have an open spot for us but were informed that they are full but that we could sit at the bar as to our luck the previous people just left about 10 mins before we came in. We were advised to pick a few items from the menu and share so we immediately ordered a handful of dishes as we were starving (stracciatella, octopus, lardo on toast, beef tartare, and the divine chocolate cake). While waiting for our food we couldn't help but just sit and stare at the beautiful decor and art on the walls. The food arrived and was extremely tasty, original and unpretentious. The desert was so good that we ended up ordering a second portion of the choc cake. Our waitress was very friendly, relaxed and professional. If it wasn't for the pink door that grabbed our attention we would have probably walked right past this hidden gem. This place would make for an excellent date night so treat your significant other and go wine and dine them. Full marks and Five stars!

Cannot fault this wonderful eatery. The service was excellent. The food delicious and interesting. The setting beautiful, stylish yet understated.

We handed over the responsibility of ordering to our awesome waitron - and she made exceptional choices on our behalf. Loved every morsel.

BOOK IMMEDIATELY. GO ASAP. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
Marijke Duminy
Warm, charismatic and efficient service coupled with unpretentious, simply delicious and sincere food! Wonderful experience and will be sure to return! Every single dish we had, we thoroughly enjoyed! We hope to return again and again!

I am not one to post reviews easily so here goes... Entering the new Pink Door on 12 Pepper Street you are transformed into something different, elegant, stylish yet understated with a minimalistic flair - there just aint any other place like this in Cape Town. We were seated at one of the window tables and felt like we were abroad, watching people stroll about outside. Once you start reading the Menu (which I will not delve into as that would be considered spoilers in my opinion - go experience it yourself) you suddenly realise this is just what you need, something new to experience compared to the dull same things that you might have become accustomed to in Cape Town. Your mouth starts to drool and this is where Chefs, Cornel Mostert and Cynthia Riveria end up taking care of you. The food is exceptionally finely orchestrated and when it comes to ingredients, strange ones that you might have never even heard of - all sourced fresh and locally - you know you are in for a real treat (as some have mentioned before be prepared to pull your phone out to Google some ingredients unless you are a well versed Foodie!). The funky and ingenious combinations will immediately kickstart all of your senses, tasty flavours will fill your mouth and put a smile on your face. The staff are all attentive, friendly and well versed all lending to a great vibe. As they say age is just a number, so don't let these Chef's young age fool you. They have more experience than a lot of grey beard Chefs, having worked in some of the worlds most prestigious kitchens some of which we have ourselves visited, such as Alinea in Chicago and Noma in Denmark. Keep your eye on these new cool kids on the block because they are phenomenally gifted and are bound to surprise you. I wish them the best of luck and can only see them reach great big heights! The sky is no longer the limit. On as last note unlike quite a few restaurants in Cape Town, Cornel told us that they will be changing their Menu every few months to keep things from becoming dull. We look forward to that as well as to visiting Mulberry & Prince regularly from now on. Thank you for the memorable evening Chefs! Regards, Geo, Jesse, Guy & Niki * * * * *
