Review Red Sofa Cafe - Cape Town Central

First visit here after a hike around Devil's Peek. The service was friendly and quick. The food was delicious and there was a good choice. Coffee was excellent. Definately will go there again.

I really enjoyed this small cafe. It was so nice that it's dog friendly. And the food was amazing. Everyone is friendly. Definitely affordable and portion sizes are perfect.

Thought we were about to have a little racist situation when the whole restaurant turned and stared at us for a moment when we came in (at that point there were only white patrons in the restaurant), but it was a wonderful and pleasant experience! Great food, great atmosphere, awesome service, and a great menu! Will definitely be back.

Situated in the heart of Vredehoek, this cafe will suit all your caffeine needs. There is a delicious Menu available, and breakfast is served all day! Friendly on-leash dogs are welcome too. On the run and can't sit down? No worries, they have take-aways available and there's a deli at the back of the cafe! Pet-friendly | @petfriendly_cpt

Food is heavenly. Customer service is incredible! The owners are extremely friendly too ✨

Simple, nicely situated café that's perfect for transitioning from coffee to beer as you try to knock out a challenging brief on your laptop 😜 ... the food is generally good value. Special mention: the halloumi fries. Great service too. WiFi is fast, etc.

I love this cafe for many reasons! 1. Pet friendly and incredibly welcoming of your pet! 2. I always manage to find parking close by. 3. They have a wonderful menu selection and their meals are wholesale, tasty and reasonably priced. 4. I always receive a wonderfully warm welcome!

We had nice burger lunch and a couple ice cold beers after a cycle, sat outside under the veranda. Was quite pleasant. Luch was tasty, service was good even though they were short staffed. Looks like they have a variety of coffees and smoothies on offer. Will visit again for sure.

Tried almost all the breakfast food and loved all of it. Really reasonable prices and a great view of Table Top Mountain. The free WiFi is a big bonus for tourists. Coffee and smoothies are also excellent. My Dad, Sister and I came here 4 days of 7 days we were Cape Town.

This little cafè is a hidden gem, from waiter service to food everything was amazing. Food was fresh and delicious. They are dog friendly and I didn’t even have to ask for a bowl of water for my fluffy friend, as the waiter saw the dog and just brought it out. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for fresh food and good service!

Fabulous neighbourhood coffee shop with delicious food and friendly staff. Couldn't ask for more <3

I Always come back here l . 5 ambience 5 staff 5 taste of the coffee. Awesome setting in Vredehoek. There’s always a place to sit, even when the wind blows. Dogs are welcome.

When you pay almost a R100 for eggs benedict...you expect a proper job. what you get though is typical cape town lazy way. Making eggs in a silicone container is NOT EGGS BENEDICT!!

Service was slow, portions tiny and when you pay R28 for a flat white that is the size of a double espresso then you know you have been fleeced....

Only positive was that food was good..

We wont be going back or recommending this place.
Zeenbean
A lovely experience, thank you for a great breakfast. I had a cafe croissant, the scrambled eggs were some of the best I've had. The croissant was definitely on point. Overall a great experience. Will definitely be back 😊

Red Sofa's location is perfect in the middle of the neighborhood and their openness to having furry friends join you for breakfast is great. Their service is good and their coffee is fantastic.

The food was lovely especially the french toast. I like that the menu has limited options, but still covering everything.

Pet peeve of mine: restaurants who microwave their poached eggs. Gosh I hate it. Please do a proper poached egg, it will make the world of difference.
Chris Rafael
Nice spot to chill outside and enjoy life passing by. The coffee is good and the food is good too. The only complaint I have is that my poached egg wasn't correctly poached - I find that when people use those mound to poach the eggs asking for them medium
always ends up with some of the white not being cooked. If the eggs were poached in the traditional manner my Benedict would have been decent.
Sheryll
It's a cute and cosy spot.

Great place to study or catch up on some work with free WiFi and power points in lots of places

Coffee is pretty good and the staff are always smiling

From a food perspective, it's your basic cafe menu, croissants, nice breakfast etc.
Hidden away down a street in Vredehoek is where you will find this coffee shop. Atmosphere is unpretentious with a 'But First Coffee' sign on the wall that adds to its quirky charm.

Come rain or shine, it offers an indoor section as well as an outdoor seating on the porch - a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee or enjoy a delicious breakfast whilst browsing the net offering free Wifi.

The Effing Delicious Stack comes with sourdough rye topped with delicious, creamy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, brie with a hollandaise sauce at the side (the sauce is a substitute due to no ripe avos at the time). Nothing like a double shot espresso ice latte to wash down a delicious breakfast.

Red Sofa Cafe has a chilled vibe, with simple but tasty food in a relaxed atmosphere.
I used to live just up the road from this gem and of course it was my go-to coffee spot. The coffee is heavenly, the layout comfortably casual, the staff chilled and friendly, and the food tasty and consistent. Whether you opt for the 'build your own brekkie' or the 'plate-o-bacon', you won't be disappointed. Having moved into the suburbs, it has been a while since I was there. So when friends asked to meet in town for breakfast, I immediately requested Red Sofa and they did not disappoint! I had the eggs benedict and, being wheat intolerant, loved that it came on Rye bread! The hollandaise was delicious and not overpowering. Would recommend it to anyone.

This was our second bad breakfast which is very disappointing as we really have enjoyed some good meals here. No rye toast, only one selection of bread, no salmon, although listed on the menu. My husband had the worst pork sausage he has ever eaten in his life and had to leave half of it. When he complained, the waitress apologized and said she would tell the manager. Very weak response, I thought! We will not be going back!
Big Al
A very disappointing breakfast experience, avoid the pork sausages at all costs. I had two porkers of note, dried out and old, or just overcooked in the extreme. They are on a par with a pork sausage I had some 30 years ago and have remembered ever since, it being a standard family joke. The Red Sofa porkers now take over this esteemed spot. I did complain, management did apologies, but did not offer another sausage, reduction in the bill or offer much other of the normal PR sympathy. This happens to be the 2nd poor meal I've had at this venue, so have written it off. A pity as it is convenient to drop in for coffee etc, but no more!
Jo Burger
Good coffee and a good eggs benedict. I like how many options there were for the eggs benedict: spinach, ham, bacon or salmon - nice to have a choice. A lovely place to sit outside and watch the world go by.

Not sure how having lived in Vredehoek for many years in the past, I had not been to the Red Sofa cafe until today.
It's got a lovely location; fantastic to opt for outdoor seatings and watch the world go by on Derry Street.

As a picky salad eater, their build your own salad option brought a big smile to my face. I ordered a spinach salad with tomatoes, feta, roast veg, bacon and croutons. It was really delicious. I also had their iced chai which was lovely.

Great service and friendly staff, only downside is that there is not much in the way of dessert options -only muffins.
Claudia Penny
This is a quaint little coffee spot in a quiet part of vredehoek.

The vibe is very laid-back and sometimes occasionally office-away-from-the-officey. The staff are friendly.

The coffee and iced coffee is pretty good. Food looks fresh- I haven't tried it yet.
Cynthia
Love going to this place, it being in my neighborhood makes it convenient for a brekkie or quick bite, good vibes, waiters a friendly, and they have free wifi!

Update 2016-11-30:
Not sure what happened since my first visit. Things seems to have gone down quite a bit. Frazzled waiters; Cooks don't wash veggies/spinach, then use them on omelettes and in food - Girlfriend had a nice, sandy omelette for breakfast :-/

Ordered a Lemon & Poppy Seed muffin, which had no lemon in it - Muffin was tasteless, except for the poppy seeds maybe. Ordered a chocolate muffin on a different date - Again, dry and tasteless. Came in a few days ago and tried the local cheese cake - Again, dry and definitely wasn't a cheesecake. Not sure what's going on at Red Sofa or what happened to their chefs / bakers ... Confused and really worried.

Original review:
Very relaxed cafe ... Open very early, so a perfect spot for an early morning coffee or brekkie. Can get very busy and vibey, early in the morning .. Love it!

Super friendly waitress that served us! ... Very attentive; No hand-waving necessary :p

Eggs Benedict was pretty good. Was a bit concerned about the amount of food you get with the "build your own breakfast" ... Think we paid R20-something extra, for little more than a teaspoon of cottage-cheese... Didn't seem right to me.

For lunch, you can't go wrong with the veggie-wrap ... Best I've ever had! :) They bake their own fresh muffins (EPIC chocolate muffins!) and have a yummy selection of huge, fresh cookies available on display too.

Definitely worth a visit!

Loved this unassuming restaurant on a street corner in Vredehoek. Was starving when we found this little gem. Had the most incredible fresh and exciting salad. And I'm not usually one to go for a salad in a restaurant unless it's amazing 🙊 which it was. Our waitress was lovely and gave me her recommendation of building a salad. So I went for a bed of baby spinach topped with spicy chicken strips, roasted veggies and pumpkin seeds. Plus loads of feta and avo. It was super yum. I devoured every morsel of it 👍 the views of the mountain are beautiful from their patio. Oh and the coffee was excellent too. Will be back to try more on their menu.

Loved this place - went for the first time recently for breakfast & coffee, both really good. And free wifi. And excellent service. It's in Derry street, easy parking too. A cool coffice option but don't sit there on your laptop for hours and not order food & drink. Eat, drink & surf I say.

Went for breakfast and had The Effing Massive Stack which had Brie and avo. It was very well done and presented, I didn't think it was a good combo but enjoyed it after adding some honey to it. The coffee was good and the waitress was really friendly. It was a bit cold inside though and I was very disappointed they didn't have any red sofas.
Jackie Platt
Such a lovely place for breakfast. Have not had a bad meal and their coffee is very good. Only thing i dont like is the way they poach their eggs, i like proper poached eggs in the water and not steamed.

Kids enjoyed the burger and I must say the chips were good. My food was ok. Friendly attentive waitrom. I found the menu limited though. Nice place to sit and do some work on the laptop.

I was quite excited to come to Red Sofa as I hadn't been here in a long time. I had previously had really good wraps and food here. Today I was relatively disappointed. I ordered French toast with bacon, as well as a peanut butter smoothie. The French toast was good, but it wasn't super tasty or anything special. The peanut butter smoothie, however, was a big let down. It was awfully sour, almost like off milk. I'm not sure what it was, but it definitely overpowered any remnants of peanut butter in the smoothie. The service was very slow and unobservant, which was a bit unpleasant. Overall it was still a trendy little café to come to on a Saturday morning, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. Hopefully another meal will be better. 60%.

Good service and great tasting food. We had the spicy chicken and avo wrap and the cheese burger with chips. The chips were the best chips iv ever had.
Sabrina Kennedy
Lovely eggs Benedict with delicious hollandaise sauce. Always a winner. Delicious sour bread toast and well made eggs. Just wish they had five roses tea Also, not just loose leaf tea as I find it really strong. Also amazing coffee milkshake

Red Sofa is honestly such a great little gem in the heart of Vredehoek down the road from the Kwik Spar and Side Walk Cafe. They have an all day breakfast served until 4PM. The menu is on their Zomato profile so go check it out. I love their build your own salad option purely because I get to make my own and it's quite a generous portion so you are left really fulfilled. This is also on their Zomato profile so do go check it out. The bonus ofcourse is their free unlimited wifi access. A must for anyone who is on the go like myself. Staff and service are exceptional. 👌🏻🌟

Awesome spot for breakfast and lunch. Friendly staff, good coffee and lovely breakfasts. You can build your own salads and make your own juices

This is such a cute spot! The service was good and it's a great location. I ordered a green juice to kickstart my day (it was VERY green, and rather tasty, as green juices go) and followed it up with a great decaf cappuccino. The menu looks enticing and I'll definitely be back to try a brekkie option. Love that they're dog-friendly and very laid back!

This place is a great little café just around the corner! I don't know why I haven't tried it before! They even do a WHOLE plate of bacon! Just bacon... Nothing else!! I mean what else would you need?? They have great coffee and because I wasn't particularly hungry, I had the croissant with cheese and jam and added extra bacon (of course)! So yummy!
Troy Van Der Westhuyzen
Popped in for breakfast on a Sunday. Enjoyed my brekkie, waitresses were happy and the vibe was good. The brekkie soothed the hangover but the star if the show was the coffee. Really enjoyed it, definitely worth popping in for a coffee and a catch up with mates!

Wonderful coffee (double shot standard), great music variety (smooth and not too loud), relaxed an friendly staff. Overall a wonderful experience with free wifi to boot 😆
Ryan Blunt
Super friendly place where you feel like all the staff genuinely like each other and make you feel like you're home. Food is great value, nothing overly fancy, always a generous helping and tasty. Coffee is some of the best i've had.
Sarah Oldert
I really enjoyed Red Sofa until my eggs benedict arrived on a cold plate with nearly cold eggs. Very unfortunate. The key to a benedict is a hot plate and hot eggs since hollandaise can only be warm. Otherwise they've got good coffee, free WiFi and a relatively cosy inside area. Don't sit by the door on a windy day, though!
I recommend the scrambled eggs - they are creamy and delicious. Also, the sourdough Rye is a serious winner. It's served with just about everything and there's a reason why.

I love this place. Good food, good vibe, good wifi, and a good hot chocolate. This is the kind of place you can spend hours at on a sunday afternoon when the rest of Cape Town is closed. It has a really homey sense, and it is enjoyable to spend afternoons sipping away at their hot drinks. In terms of food, I've enjoyed both their "build your own" salads as well as their soup of they day. Really filling, well priced, and surprisingly tasty.

The pros: It's lovely! Great place to work, lounge with friends, and have a quick (or long) bite to eat. Good service, good atmosphere.

The cons: There really aren't any! This is a good spot. Maybe don't buy the cookies - I had a chocolate chip one there this past week that wasn't so great.

Loved getting dvds from the best dvd renting place in town and was so happy when they opened the cafe. Service is a bit lacking though but the food isnt too bad :)

Visited Red Sofa Cafe for Sunday Brunch. Immediate impression was of a comfortable, simple bakery. Sat outside in the sun. Service was slow, as were coffees, which were decent (once they arrived). The menu was slightly confusing, but offers lots of combinations and options. Impressed that salmon is only R20 to add to a breakfast... Food was average. Nothing special in terms of presentation or flavour. Overall, average experience, average score.

Red Sofa Cafe is your classic neighborhood style cafe - it's full of locals with their dogs and their newspapers and it just feels as comfortable as if you were still at home.

The BF still rates their eggs Benedict as one of the best in Cape Town, and I don't blame him because it is delicious. They also have t oats and seeds with yoghurt, if you're looking for something lighter. They have deluxe coffee, which is always strong and will give you the kick you need.

Their lunch menu is good too, and their butternut and almond salad is my favorite.

If I haven't convinced you yet, you should go there purely because you can order a plate of bacon. Yup, a whole plate of bacon and not be judged for it.

Great coffee, friendly staff, relaxed vibe. Nice spot to have all day breakfast. Had the "effing delicious" and a properly strong flat white. Lekker
Leigh Howard
A very nice place with a good menu. Portions are a little less than expected and the poached eggs are done in a poaching pan. The coffee is always amazing and the place is clearly a local favourite.
Stephanie Kelly
Relaxed venue, great iced lattes and good food. Perfect place for a chilled coffee date with friends. Friendly staff too! Definitely coming back here soon!

The eggs benedict is amazing! The parma ham was so tasty and was the perfect hangover remedy ? And did I mention that their cappuccinos are out of this world!?Definitely going back. I highly recommend this place! ?

I went for a late breakfast with my girlfriend and my little furry friend and absolutely loved it. Our waitress was great, the food hit the spot perfectly. A really great place to go if you are looking t have a super relaxed meal with your furry friend and a few peeps.

Bacon was Very tasty. Good service.

Red Sofa is an awesome breakfast & lunch spot. Any place that understands the need for a "plate 'o bacon" on the menu is a place that has my heart! You really can't go wrong with whatever you order!
The atmosphere is comfortable and has a "stick around as long as you like" vibe, which is welcoming.
The service is generally great, though it can be touch and go depending on who you have; it's either really sweet & attentive or it can come with a slight attitude.
Their red cappuccino is one of the best!
Also: free wifi, a comfy couch and lovely outdoor seating (though windy at times but that is Vredehoek for you).
Janine Palser
Very relaxed vibe, and the most delicious pot pie! Also, a plate of bacon available on the menu - going to have to bring my boyfriend there to try it..
Blackbeard
What a pleasant surprise! Didn't think a shop that rents out dvd's would pull off such a great meal. Great ambience, great coffee, great food
Lemon Dream
Good coffee (Deluxe brand), good breakfast. The food is fresh and the bacon crispy. Service tends to slow down as it gets busy ... it's mostly busy -especially on weekends. There's plenty of shade outside and dogs are welcomed with a bowl of water. BYOD seems to be the order of the day with the Mac:PC ratio around 10:1.
Vermont Art Circle
Great place with casual & relaxed atmosphere, rather like 'Cheers' where everyone knows your name! Have never had a bad meal there and have enjoyed many a happy hour chilling with friends +/or family. Whether it is breakfast (Eggs benedict or delicious croissants), a coffee break with carrot cake or red velver cupcake or the amazing burgers or wraps or sandwiches - oh dear what shall I choose today? Do yourself a favour & try it!
