Review Newport Market & Deli - Cape Town Central

Chloe Wrathmall
When we arrived, it was raining so the door was closed on account of the weather. One of the staff saw me arriving and opened the door to usher me in before I even reached it. The food was amazing, fresh juice phenomenal, and we had a waiter who was so friendly and looked after us so well. Silly me left the restaurant and forgot my handbag on the chair next to me. About an hour later I realized and raced back. The staff had moved it to a back room and kept it safe for me. Thank you so much, Newport. I’ll be back 1000 times again.

First time for a friend and I. Love the setup to go upstairs as well. Very big menu to choose from. Nice meeting spot for business and leisure.
Simona Marinkova
The service is great and friendly. We were seated and served fast for brunch. The food and coffee are both quite good. The deli shop has good quality foods and bread.

Really wonderful service from the staff and management on duty Saturday morning (28/10). I ordered the rare roast beef sandwich but wasn't entirely happy with my order, it was handled very professionally and they went beyond my expectations to ensure I was happy. Excellent customer service 👌🏽

Pretty good overall, go upstairs of you want a view of the golfbaan or the sea obstructed by some buildings. General kinda "healthy" vibe like the type that would attract people coming back from a yoga class wanting a "strong" smoothie. Food was good, Turkish chicken wrap almost tasted like a authentic Shawarma. Albeit portion wise it could have been bigger. But a pretty good place to have brunch, if that's your lifestyle and have to catch a teeoff or yoga before or after class before having your midday white wine.

Just opposite the Greenpoint park and close to the beach this restaurant is relaxed and casual. You can take your kids there and not feel uncomfortable if they are a little noisy. The smoothies are amazing and the service is good. Food was well priced.

Great coffee and service. Chocolate croissants are amazing. Portia is always friendly when I visit there. We have become loyal coffee goers there.

Newport is an Artisanal Café, Sourdough Bakery & Deli, established 1997, and is one of my favourite places to hang out. From the sourdough breads to their muesli biscuits, everything you eat here is fresh, homemade and delicious. They keep their menu uncomplicated and always appetising and fresh with loads of options! They cater for vegans, vegetarians and those who just love a wholesome well balanced meal. When you come to Newport you can eat fast, fresh and healthy, the deli is truly a lovely place to shop for fresh produce. Absolutely love the healthy breakfast selection. Amazing little gem found just opposite the lighthouse in Cape Town.

Before I was diagnosed as a celiac I loved eating here. They have always had great quality, delicious food. I stopped for a few years because they didn't have good gluten free options. Today I had a toasted gluten-free sandwich and it was amazing. Really happy they have made such a big effort to cater to those of us with food allergies and intolerances. I'll definitely be back.

Quick take-away after walk. Excellent deli and bakes - but the Cinnamon bun looked nice but average, only had half and always order a double-shot or you have to buy an expresso and add to your coffee - not strong enough.
Gavin Rabinowitz
A very well run restaurant. A really good selection of fresh food , and the bakery is fantastic . I've been here many times over the years, and it has always been good .. Good service , good food . Can't find any fault with them .
Claudio Bartolucci
Nice place close to the sea, you can enter for the shop or you can seat down at the restaurant. People very kind, food is good. There are lots of things in the menu, I had pouched eggs with cheese and turkey bacon. We didn't have to wait to long for our food. Inside it's a bit noisy, if you sit outside and you are cold you can have a blanket.

Best sandwich on earth, gourmet grilled chicken sandwich on sourdough. Priscilla who served us is a gem. Really appreciate the service from the establishment and her. Food and cappuccinos are great. Almond milk and other alternatives are available and made equally as good as normal Dairy (this isn’t always the case) Everything is clean and pleasant. All food and drinks are really reasonably priced. The venue borders the eco park which is an absolute must. Top spot. Will be back whenever we visit.

What a lovely restaurant with such friendly helpful staff, opens the door when youre approaching with a fat friendly smile. Very accommodative to your menu needs, lovely food, great portions. Quite vibey, anything goes, lovely decor, can sit up or down stairs and has a descent bathroom and baby changing facilities

The best lentil soup!! I'm stuck in my hotel sick and had a craving for some tasty soup, this hit the spot perfectly (I may even order the same for dinner tonight).

Ahhhhh, yes this gem of a place is an old favourite. After a walk/yoga in Green Point Park or a leisurely walk along the promenade, this is a great morning stop for breakfast, lately Shakshuka is my go to meal and it so good here. Plus, they have great coffee with a fab view of Signal Hill.
Natasha Groenewald
This vegan dish was very unexpected but delicious! Your juices are amazing too. Thx so much

We went looking for a brekkie place after our walk. Most places are understaffed and not serving breakfast. We asked if we could have croissants made with cheese and salad and this was no issue. We ordered coffee and bought a bran muffin fresh from the oven it was amazing. Everything tasted great , the service was excellent nothing was to much staff are so friendly.

Favourite cafe to visit after a walk along Seapoint Promenade or after a walk in Greenpoint Park. This place makes really good coffee and the food is delish! It's a habit to always sit upstairs because of the beautiful views of Table Mountain, Lion's Head, Signal Hill, the golf course and the park! I've never been disappointed by their food, in the past I have tried their wraps, pasta and gourmet sandwiches & I give all a thumbs up! Their fresh juices are super, 'the energiser' is great and so refreshing! This time I had the Cajun chicken burger and it was divine, although it looked more like a sandwich as you choose what kind of roll you want it on (mine was a bougette). I found it a bit strange that instead of fries they gave Lays lightly salted chips, but I didn't mind too much because the burger itself was so tasty and filling!
The service here is really good, the waiters are always so friendly and on the ball! No complaints about this gem!

Whatt an amazing location, the lighthouse and promenade on the left and green point park and stadium to the right. The outside section is dog friendly making it immediately popular as many people walk their dogs in the park. Inside has a beautiful deli that is stocked with luxurious “essentials”. I recommend buying their freshly squeezed orange juice. Most people sit downstairs but I prefer the less busy area upstairs near a window to admire lions head and the park. The Greek wrap is always my choice for lunch and breakfast is their croissant. I find it peaceful enough to work here and I have had some excellent service!

Lovely salads, wraps and sandwiches. Simba the waiter always takes good care of us. Good quality cappuccinos & fruit juice. One of our favorite lunches in Green Point:
Jason Bagley
If you're looking for super healthy options, it's a great place for breakfast. Their warm breakfast menu is disappointing and about 15%-20% over priced. I guess that's down to location, but even the V&A offers you more value for money (and I'm not talking chain restaurants). Sandwiches are also pretty expensive, which does make you feel like you're eating at a touristy spot, however there isn't a tourist in sight.

Deli looks great and stocked with fresh breads and pastries. Coffee was pretty good too.
Anuschka Wischnewski
Always enjoy coming to Newport Market and Deli. The place is always bustling but service is quick and efficient. The food is always fresh and I always make a point of eating there when I'm in Cape Town.
Rudespoon_SA
Lovely breakfast! Fresh & hot. Service is a bit slow but definitely worth a try! Home made bread & free range eggs is a must for breakfast. Stunning view of the scenic ocean, situated just behind the lighthouse, great for a post run on the promenade.
ZEV SCHAPIRO
I had the most delicious homemade beef & bean soup for lunch today served with a sourdough roll. Great service and value for money I will be back to try the homemade lentil soup!
Jamie Kawalsky
I ordered the pastrami bagel, it was inedible. The pastrami was obviously previously frozen, it made me feel physically ill. I then asked the waitron (who was absolutely lovely) to just give me a cheese bagel. The cheese bagel arrived, the cheese was brittle and also obviously frozen and absolutely awful. I feel robbed and I will never return.
Martin Mössmer
Cheesecake was edible. Wish I could say the same for the ancient carrot cake, or the insipid, burnt coffee. Avoid it if you possible can - it's quite for a reason.
Terry
The setting is beautiful as it is right by the promenade. The food was very disappointing for the hefty price. We ordered chicken soup and a roast beef sandwich, the chicken soup was basically; extremely salty water with a little bit of dry chicken, a few strands of noodle and some pieces of carrot, how do you even call that soup?? The roast beef sandwich was alright, the roast beef itself was as thin as a ham slice, so you basically paying over R70 for some lettuce, bread and slice of tomato. (Please see pictures) Not worth it at all. The service was very average as well, Our waitress didn't even say anything to us, we had to engage with her, and all she said was ok..... for the price and area you would assume to have delicious food and great service but it was the complete opposite. The deli inside has some great baked goods thou.

Quick breakfast here this morning. The cafe is super cute, and the cosy feel was really nice on a chilly morning. The coffee is great, and the food is good. Noting exceptional but good, well cooked food.
Claire Atkinson
Newport is pretty cool. Had to wait for a table but I suppose it was worth it. Coffee was great but a trainee waitress was kind of offish. Will probably go back again though. Perfect for an after cycle breakfast.

I like Newport for their centrality to the promenade and the park. We tend to stop here often before a picnic in the park to stock up on yummy essentials. This time we chose to have lunch at the restaurant. A table outside secures a front row seat to checking out Cape Tonians at their best. The falafel salad is recommended along with the salmon gourmet sandwich. They pride themselves on the salad dressing but it's pretty average according to my taste buds. They make awesome smoothies and the variety on offer is great. Stop by the next time you take a walk on the promenade

If you're looking for a lunch spot with a varied menu, an open & laid back atmosphere and a view of the ocean, then Newport Deli is a place you have to visit! They are super busy so be prepared to queue for a bit... but the wait is definitely worth it! The service was relatively quick but it's the kind of restaurant experience you don't want to rush so reading the menu or sipping on your drink for an extra 10 minutes is pretty painless. My Cajun chicken quinoa salad was really delicious and a very reasonable portion! I shared it with my mum but could have definitely eaten it on my own!
The menu offers something for all tastes so you're unlikely to be disappointed! Looking forward to going back!

Lovely breakfast spot, especially if you are in the mood for something healthy and delicious. They have got a wide range of breakfast options as well as smoothies and fresh juices. Very friendly staff and efficient service. I will definitely be back.
Nicole Whitehorn
Popped in here for a quick takeaway sandwich as I'd heard they offer gluten-free goodies. Was a Sunday at lunchtime and yet I received my delicious gluten-free sandwich within 8 minutes. Beautifully packaged and loaded with toppings. Will definitely be back.
Estelle Roux
Lovely wraps and salads, quite a bad smell as it's right off the promenade (but they can't help that) and they got me a bowl of water for my dog. Nice touch.
Suitcases And Lattes
I'm being generous with these stars but location is nice. This was probably the worst breakfast place that I have been too and here are the reasons why:
1- the cutlery felt dirty
2. Cheese tasted old like it was defrosted and not fresh
3. Coffee was too weak for my liking
4. You are not allowed to create your own breakfast which is a bummer considering you just want some toast and eggs or toast and Avo. Customizing a breakfast is so easy.
5. The waiter was unfriendly and didn't really see how we were doing. we had to ask for things several times before we got it.

Overall very disappointing because the location is nice.

It's sad because it has a cute Delhi in the place but I was weary of buying anything after my terrible experience!

There are so many other nicer breakfast spots around sea point, don't waste your time here.

Beautiful setting on the Promenade in Sea Point, especially on a sunny day. The rare beef sandwich on gluten free bread was delicious and good value for money. Our waitress was friendly, polite and attentive. Definitely will be back!

We live in Amalfi, the block above Newport. The service and friendliness from staff is 10/10. You can phone down your order and fetch in 5 minutes. I rate them very highly. Delicious food.

What a beautiful café / restaurant! So light & airy, huge glass windows, tasteful decor. Lovely bakery section selling moutwatering marvels.

We had an excellent slice of New York cheesecake. Creamy, exact lemony balance, thin delicate crust. Perfection.
The chocolate croissant was flaky with a dark chocolatey centre. Lovely. The cappucino was hot, rich & creamy. The orange juice is freshly squeezed in front of you. Pulpy, ice cold & sweet.
Ryan Goodman
A more spacious, improved setting and a better vibe than the old location, made for a generally pleasant Sunday breakfast experience.

But as another reviewer noted, there is something missing, something that leaves you a little empty afterwards: perhaps its the hefty price for a realtively basic breakfast (no frills nor flair), or perhaps its the cavernous/vaulted ceiling, wood tables and tiled floors that makes for a slightly cold experience.

The service cannot be faulted but if you're after a hearty brekkie, there are better spots around.
Lindie White
Newport have a winning combination of the perfect setting, understated stylish decor, loyal support and an established reputation. It was filled with avid cyclists, yummy mommys with babes in prams, proud fathers with toddlers in tutus, slightly dishevelled teens talking to each other via Snapchat and middleaged grownups treating their octagenarian relatives to brunch. It certainly had a New York feel to it, especially the beautiful display of artisan breads and bakes.

Our waiter was good (though we had to wait quite long for a card machine to settle our bill). We ordered Scrambled Eggs and our companions had a Chicken Mayo Sandwich and an Avo & Chicken Wrap. Her Carrot with Kale + Spinach and Ginger looked scarily healthy (but that's why she's a skinnymalinx).

So why only 3pts? Not sure actually. Can't really fault them, so this is a completely subjective opinion. The price perhaps? At R60, I expected more (as in presentation, not quantity) from the breakfast. The cappuccino was good, but not great.

In the end, the whole experience just didn't resonate deeply with us. Will it put us off? Most probably not. Can we recommend it? Ja. Will we go again? Ja, i suppose so. Why? As I said earlier: Newport have a winning combination of the perfect setting, understated stylish decor, loyal support and an established reputation . . .
Always a nice vibe in the mornings for breakfast and also offers great coffee. Food is not amazing and there is not much of a selection on the menu. I would suggest to go for a morning coffee though for the vibe.
Bev Moss-Reilly
Newport's food is tasty and relatively inexpensive but somehow lacks the character of the old one.
Service is average.
Parking is a huge problem and a real drawback. After a stressful week its not pleasant to hunt for parking and not be able to make a reservation.
Lovely little spot to stop at while enjoying a stroll along the promenade! I loved the old Newport when it was further along beach road and was eager to try the new establishment out- amazing! Fantastic service that was on the ball, walked in and was served promptly. The coffee is great, the replenish super juice is my absolute favorite (so yummy and good for you!) and from the breakfast I have to say the poached eggs are awesome. This little restaurants deli selection is fantastic- lots of little treats that are hard to come by are scattered all around- easily tempting the eye!

Popped into Newport late this morning for some breakfast nibbles. Between us we ordered the Triathlete smoothie, the Berry Blitz smoothie, a chocolate, cinnamon and plain croissant and coffee. We had no complaints. The smoothies were yummy, the croissants were freshly baked and the coffee was strong! Perfect 👍
Tanner
I find it really sad that a nice hot spot with beautiful scenery has everything going for it except horrible service. Food before drinks. Food before cutlery. Forever to get Tabasco where one has to leave the table to go inside to get it. Staff are in no hurry and seem very disorientated. This place is good for stopping in to get coffee on the go and buying the odd bread or croissant. No desire to come back in a hurry. Well done !!
Sharna Berelowitz
This is the second time I attempted going to this restaurant. Staff is unfriendly and in no rush. When ordering drinks the waitress brings each drink, ice and lemon at separate times! Very rigid in their menu while charging for each condiment. Disappointed as usual.
Gabriela Limberis
Lovely spot on the beach front. Loved the breakfast and the service was absolutely fantastic.
The combination of the sea breeze, lwe are sure to be back!
Conrad Jonck
There are many places that offers lunch with a view, but this one really caught me off guard! The sandwiched were exceptionally good and with service to match it. I definitely look forward to going back to try some of the other delicacies.
Natasha Lutz
Excellent place to come for lunch
We loved the variety of choice and the unusual smoothies. The staff were friendly and efficient and the vibe was awesome. When locals hang out at a restaurant than you know it's good, coming back to try some other dishes
Joshua Levi
Severely mediocre experience. We had to send our coffees back due to them practically being steamed milk - our replacements not being much better. Unfriendly and hostile manager who got offended when we asked when our food would be arriving (after waiting for well over half an hour). Food however was OK, not particularly good though.
Gillian
Lovely setting and good vibe - it was bigger than I thought inside, but we were lucky to get a table outside. Food is good but not spectacular. Juice combinations are great - I loved my beetroot juice combo. Bought some bread for home and still have to taste before I can comment. Easy to find parking and even better to take a walk along the promenade afterwards for a great morning out

We went to Newport Market and Deli inGreenpoint on the spur of the moment..with a group of 21 people , 3 kids under the age of 10 as well as teenagers and adults. The owner accommodated us quite quickly , the waiters were very friendly and handled the crowds quite well.

The food was delicious and fresh juices were refreshing.
Wish that there were halaal choices on the menu but I was really thankful to the owner for being very honest with us about the halaal status of the meats

The Market also offers a range of fresh handbaked breads and other foods .
The atmosphere is very relaxed and informal and a great place for families and friends to get together .

I had the Mediterranean plate and my hubby had the avo and pine nut salad , both very good ...the artic wrap was also a winner as was the ceasar wrap and chicken sharwma , the chicken burgers were a hit with the teen boys and mac and cheese with the younger kids .

I highly recommend this place .

Had lunch with my parents @ Newport. We each had a salad. The portions were more than adequate and the ingredients fresh. The new location is lovely and the staff are on the ball.

I usually go to Newport when I need a pick me up before work. I miss the old location - it had its charm even though it was cramped. The new store is spacious and modern. Great coffee and pastries. My favourites are the chai latte and chocolate croissant. The almond croissant isn't bad either. They have a large selection of fresh juices and superfood smoothies. Maybe next time I should try one of those. Nothing beats a chocolate croissant in the morning though!
Mike Varney
New location but just as good as the last! Had a quick coffee and croissant with some friends. Bit dark inside so opt for a table outside - weather dependent.
Nicola Alexandra Stevenson
Great smoothies, delicious almond croissants and very tasty sour dough bread!! The Vibe and the service is great and deli is fabulous! Really great spot, don't miss out!
Mandy Jones
This is one of my ultimate breakfast or lunch spots... Especially after a run or walk along the promenade! Their menu makes it really difficult to choose what to order, and everything I've had so far has been delicious! I usually go for the salmon and cream cheese wrap, or one of their salads as their greens are always so fresh. Coffee is of course a must, and although I normally have a latte, it always hits the spot.

What I love about this place is that it's also a deli which makes it really easy to spoil yourself with some overseas goodies!
I Love Foodies
I had the pleasure of breakfasting at the Newport Deli this weekend, and as I hadn't been there since they relocated eons ago, I was pretty excited to go check them out. In true deli style, I was not disappointed. I had a freshly-squeezed apple and ginger juice to start off with, which was wonderfully refreshing, although the ginger was quite potent, and followed that with a cappuccino. Then I opted for their fresh fruit salad, muesli, yoghurt, and honey breakfast, which was absolutely divine. The mixture of fruit was great and they even had figs, which I thought was pretty epic. Apparently they don't serve bacon (only macon) with their traditional breakfasts, and bacon is a must for me if I have eggs. So I probably won't head there for one of those hearty breakfasts, but I'd be back for the healthy options in a heartbeat!
Johan Snyman
Sooo slow!! Food is decent. Not blown away by the sandwiches, though. Rather tasteless. I'd go back, but just to buy ingredients, not to eat there.

Having very recently moved to Moullie Point, my boyfriend and I decided to give the Newport Deli a second chance (having been disappointed before). We didn't sit down to eat, this is simply a review of the Deli section.

Nothing mind blowing, the baked goods are probably slightly below the standard of the average Spar bakery only 4 times the price. The smoothies are nothing to write home about, again for what they are, ridiculously over priced.

The service is average, the prices are very high and all in all I was left with the impression that this is an attempt at being artisan and "crafty" simply by over charging for substandard products.

I will definitely give the restaurant a try simply to get an all round experience but I must say I am prepared for something rather average.
Hlela Gush
Noisy and woefully overpriced (new building overheads perhaps?). Unfortunately for them, there are a plethora of better options but they should be fine with their loyal following.
Rebecca Hartle
Newport deli is becoming a firm favourite of mine. Whether it be for a sit down meal with friends or a quick stop to pick up some essentials for the week.

Staff are always friendly, and it's a fantastic place to bring your laptop to work for a couple of hours.

Their baked cheesecake is out of this world amazing and I dare say it- perhaps the best I've tasted in Cape Town!

I recommend grabbing a take away coffee, some cheesecake and a few picnic things and taking a stroll through Green Point park.
Gabrielle Meyers
Same same but different. If you loved the old one you'll love this one just the same. I love that it is now a double story setting and you can have a view of the golf course or the sea 😊 I had the carrot and apple juice to start followed by the banana breakfast.
Paul W Harding
This place has always been a favourite. A great place to visit after walking the Atlantic boulevard when they were located in Granger bay. Their smoothies are tasty as are the wrap and sandwiches. Most of the food is simple but well prepared, seasoned correctly and tasty. I would recommend a visit if just for a berry smoothie or freezerchino

The only reason I rate 4 and not higher is the new location is extremely noisy and not as cosy as the original. Having said that they have succeeded in keeping the food standard up.
Louis Or
Ordered the chicken schnitzel burger. Was so disappointed. The quality of the burger was no different from a street vendors chicken burger. The mocha I ordered was cold when it arrived as well. Overall terrible experience with over priced food. Will definitely not be going there again.
Instaeatscapetown
Have been to the new Newport Deli twice. The 1st time I had a delicious salad and coffee and the 2nd time I had the peanut butter smoothie with superfoods. Both were incredibly delicious, service was quick and friendly and the new venue is so spacious and comfortable.
Sarita Kerber
Fresh delicious juices are the best at Newport. A lovely choice of healthy meals I had a lovely avocado, salami and cheese bagel. Delicious meals always a good choice to go after a walk at green point park.
Phoebe Kondylis
As and old favourite I was sad to hear they were moving but I love it even more now in the new location. It is spacious and open and not as chaotic as the previous spot. Their menu is vast and the food is always excellent.
Dominique Andrea Vieira
I love Newport Deli. Plenty of healthy options on the menu, and their coffee is delicious! They've recently moved to a new, renovated space and the upstairs section is just amazing to sit in. Newport never disappoints, great service and a really lovely busy, bustling cafe vibe. Their deli section means you will never leave empty handed, but who minds that, really? Great for a breakfast (try their paw paw with yoghurt, almond, honey and ask for extra chia seeds) or a light salad: sandwhich type lunch after a nice promenade walk! There's something on the menu no matter how fussy the eater is 😊
Catherine Steere
Cute little deli spot with a great vibe and location. Nice for chilled weekend breakfasts. The juices are great and I had a salmon sandwich which was delicious. Would definitely go back.
Elizabeth Visser
This is a wonderful little seaside spot. For rainy days, their thick, chunky lentil soup is gorgeous, and for any other day, their sandwiches, wraps and fresh fruit juices are delicious! It is quite noisy inside, since lots of families bring their kids, but it doesn't disturb the atmosphere 🎈
Mademoiselle Nomad
Awesome lovely local spot. Unassuming, unpretentious. Great place for locals. Perfect during winter too with their delicious hot chocolate. Their food is also yummy (I love the pasta with chicken, pesto and basil). Service is good. You can also shop from the cute deli. Not as extensive as others but great nonetheless.
Nick BG
Went one Sunday morning - it was packed and unfortunately VERY noisy due to lots of loud children and a distinct lack of absorbent surfaces - think wall to floor glass and wood, and shiny screed underfoot. Only other negative is the high prices.. BUT the food was oh so yummy! My partner had the shukshuka and I had a delicious 'health' breakfast, one of the best I've ever had, can't wait to do it again soon.
