Review Hokey Poke - Cape Town Central

Catherine Kannemeyer
I really enjoy flavoursome bowls but was late to the poke party as a sushi purist. Nonetheless I have become a devotee having enjoyed a number of innovative combos, with staff being kind enough to accommodate special requests. I am often a creature of habit and the inspiration to enjoy a variety of different textures and flavours at Hokey Poke is untold. The music and decor are added bonuses.

Nice pole bowl place!! You must be satisfied with delicious sea foods. You can choose whatever you want and you can make your original poke bowl. Enjoy them like fast food!!

Great selection of Poke Bowls and ingredients to build your own. Food was fresh and wholesome. Service was ok. Used Feastfox for the first time here and it actually worked out pretty well. Definitely coming back.
Danielle Pieterse
What a great, cozy place with amazing food. It was the first time I experienced Poké and it was suprisingly delicious. They have a great variety of fresh food and the vibe inside is very cool!

After a little speed bump with Uber Eats and this being out of stock, Hoke Poke took the effort to find me and send me a voucher to fix the mess. Well done, not only a funky brand with great food, but they actually look after their customers. 5 stars guys, my weekly Rolls order is back!

This place got me hooked on poke bowls. I normally just used to eat sushi, but I never thought of trying something else. Their flavour combinations are delicious and they also give you the freedom to mix and match different ingredients in your poke bowl. Another thing I love is that you can taste the freshness in all of their ingredients. Never fails to disappoint 👌🏻
Riaan Boshoff
Fresh, healthy and funky. That sums up the food at Hokey Pokey. You can choose one of their "suggested" bowls or build your own. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is a mix between modern and retro. Could be sitting in Tokyo. Perfect place to have dinner before going our for a few drinks.
Nils Flaatten
This is a real gem tucked away in the city center! They do deconstructed sushi dishes. I loved it and went with a bowl of sticky rice. Imported beers so a bit pricy but great decor which reminded me of being back in Asia. Fresh and tasty chow. Give it a try!
Morne van Dyk
Something different you have to try, feel good food in a funky atmosphere. Cleverly hidden away in the concrete jungle. One of the best attributes is being able to play chef by creating your own bowl of yummy. This place bis going to be around for a long time
Jonathan
My first poke bowl and it was excellent. Love the idea, and everything is fresh and tasty. Look forward to trying out a couple more items from the menu.

Absolutely love this spot. Retro, fun, healthy food, delicious. Will definitely be back

As a Chinese person who grew up in Asia, I found the poke bowls here tasty and very Asian tasting. I like how you can choose your base - sticky rice, brown rice, vegetables, nachos etc. Not to mention the condiments provided - sriracha chilli sauce, another spicy sauce, salt, pepper etc. A medium bowl ranges from 85 - 110 Rand. You can also customise your own bowl.

I love Hokey Poke! I’m a really picky eater but I love their food, it’s fresh, colourful and tasty :) I order here all the time, been very happy with it each time <3

Nice Poke Bowl restaurant. Friendly service and tasty + healthy food!

Great place for dinner with a girlfriend. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Food was flavorful and delicious. The medium bowl was the perfect portion size. Lots of options for both meat and veggie eaters. Will definitely go again!

The best atmosphere with even friendlier staff, this place is on my top 10 restaurants!! Love everything about Hokey poke from their super fresh ingredients to the electric ambiance. Highly recommend this place!!

simply delicious! Fresh, beautiful food, perfectly balanced flavours and also just great, great, great. I couldn’t have asked for a better start to first thursdays!

Prices keep rising, so it’s become more of a splurge. But my goodness these bowls are delicious, super filling, and no regrets each time. My go-to choice is #5

I ate from their Mojo Market stall and had a pleasant experience. The lady taking my order was so eager to help me decide on what to put in my bowl and she smiled the entire time. They said it would take 10mins when in fact it took them 5mins. The poke bowl was so tasty and presented beautifully. I loved how none of the sauces were overpowering even though I had ordered two usually strong options (creamy wasabi and soya). They were generous with my toppings and my Avo was cut so carefully. I really enjoyed my meal and the handy wooden fork was a nice touch to my travel pack.

The food looks great, and it tastes great, but I’m not sure if it was worth the price. I tried a medium No. 2 , which had Salmon, avo, edmame beans , almonds and some other stuff with a half brown rice and half kale base. I would have liked more salmon. For R110 I think it’s a tad bit over priced. But glad I tried it out. FYI, the menu on Zomato is outdated. I have attached the current menu with the new prices.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed! The décor is quirky and Japanese-inspired, although I thought the seating arrangements could be a bit more comfortable. We both ordered the No. 2, which came very quickly. It was tasty and flavourful - the salmon was fresh and I really enjoyed the Hokey Poke House sauce, and the addition of edamame beans. Although a bit on the expensive side, the portions are generous and filling, and you are paying for high quality ingredients. Service was decent, and I’ll definitely be returning to try more of their options.

I absolutely love sushi and I had seen so much hype about poke bowls over the past summer. I decided to pop in at the store in the Waterfront “for the gees”.

The assistant helped me pick out one of the more popular bowls - I chose a number 3 (half baby salad, half sushi rice) and offered to sear the tuna. What they don’t tell you is that the “sear” is done in an air fryer so my tuna was dry and unpalatable. I took it back and was told “this is what you ordered”, surely the standard of something seared is a hot pan and flash fried? Anyway, the rest of the bowl was delicious once I picked the tuna out.

I tried Hokey Poke again, but this time at the Mojo Market for the World Cup Final. I was really disappointed at the quality of ingredients that was in the bowl - the avo was brown and they put waaaay too much soy sauce even after I had asked the assistant to stop, homegirl just kept pouring.

Apparently there’s a third Hokey Poke store - I’m willing to give them another go. I’m really keen on having one of these 5 star experiences!
Aiden Suskin
Super average poke bowl. It was so small and expensive. I have had poke bowl from many places in Cape Town and this wasn’t great compared to the other places I’ve been. Portions are tiny and simply wasn’t that tasty.
SKB
Really nice atmosphere, presentation and ambience - but I've had better poke bowls. I had a number 1, which isn't the most adventurous, but found that there were relatively few toppings compared to the rice. It was still yummy, but I'll probably try other spots before coming back.
Emma Divaris
Best poke bowls in town! I love making up my own dishes with all of their fresh ingredients. I always top it off with the Hokey Pokey house sauce - it's a winner!
Robin Mahlangu
I'm a bit disappointed with myself for not having tried out this spot considering it has been open for some time now. It was well worth the wait as i absolutely loved everything about this spot. The ambiance is very cool and laid back with the pink neon lights that add to the whole cool and hip mood this place gives off. The staff are very friendly and explain any questions you might have about the menu thoroughly. The food itself is amazing, the fusion of fresh ingredients just work perfectly. There's a medium and large size bowl and for me personally unless you're SUPER hungry I'm glad I went with the medium bowl because the portions are very generous. Great value for money and defintely a place I'll be visiting frequently.

I’m obsessed. By far the best poke I’ve ever had. The no.3 will change your life , honestly . I’ve been to the main restaurant in CBD and the mojo market stall and the staff is always super nice. You definitely need to visit Hokey Poke , HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend

Tried these poke bowls at the Mojo Market stall today. I had the No 5 special which was absolutely DELICIOUS! What a generous amount of salmon, beetroot, edamame beans and all topped off with crispy salmon skin. Liked the spicy (sesame?) sauce on the sticky rice too. Really delicious and fresh bowl of yummyness! My vegan friend went for their No 3, swapped the tuna for tofu and asked them to remove the mayo sauce and also really enjoyed it. We both went back for seconds!! The service here is really quick, efficient and the staff are able to answer questions so they are well versed in the menu. Really love the concept and will be back many more times!

Incredibly unique, healthy, delicious food. Quaint little spot in town - I found the decor and lighting very strange - doesn’t compliment the super good food. Overall great experience.

So I had my first poke bowl at the Hout Bay market last month and it really did rock my socks off. Ever since I have been wanting to try Hokey Poke and finally the day came. This time, not only were my socks rocked off but so was everything else. I had the number two with a base of kale slaw and a Kombucha to drink and the whole experience was just fantastic. The combination of flavors and textures were truly on point. The only thing I could suggest is to be a little more generous with the salmon (yes I know it is expensive). I left feeling perfectly full, healthy, happy and extremely satisfied.

Amazing food, preped while you look. Sure wish they served alcohol though... but it's got a great quaint vibe to keep tge cold Cape weather away. Cosy...🤗
Zulfah Albertyn
My first Hokey Poke bowl was from the Mojo Market- it was absolutely yummy! I had the #5 special-the crispy salmon skin absolutely made the dish for me and less sticky rice would have been nice. Will definitively be trying some other bowls..
Lauren Laa Hebbs
I love hokey poke with its fresh tasty colourful poke bowls! Absolutely delicious and nutritious! Highly recommend the bowl with salad and almonds in and with a base of half rice and half kale slaw ❤️💛💚💙💜

The food is of great quality. The Hawaiian atmosphere is well done. Prices are reasonable but for the style of food makes it worth it. Would recommend for those who haven't experienced poke before.
Jaryd Kay
Woah, the food here is super duper fresh and just feels like clean eating. I had the number 5 which was yum, rich, flavourful, fresh and i added chilli which added perfect balance. Its quite pricey but I'll go back to spoil myself.
Bree Street Brent
Hokey Poke is very “downtown”, with a quick-service in and out kinda vibe. And it’s great. Poke is like a combo of sushi/sashimi and Mexican. It’s delicious and fresh. They currently don’t have a liquor licence, but you can bring your own.
Danieljake
Quietly tucked away at the bottom of Church Street, hokey poke offers a variety of unique poke bowl menu items, as well as a 'create your own option', which I opted for.

I had tofu as my protein with a brown rice base, pear and chili.

The combination worked well. I particularly enjoyed the salty flavour of the pear.

I had a matcha green tea cappuccino to drink (if I see that a restaurant offers it, I'll always order it) which was creamy and delicious.

The decor is very trendy, with low key lighting and all in a 'millennial pink' colour.

I will definitely come back here.
Marcel Oudejans
I happened to park outside their front door. Looked at the menu, and since it was supper time, I popped in. Selected the #1 which was an excellent choice. Food took a little long to arrive, but was freshly made, so the extra 5min was worth it. Simple, delicious food. Only change I would have made is to have less 'house sauce' in the rice. What I enjoyed most was how good I felt about the fresh, healthy, satisfying meal. Will return.
Claire Victoria Henderson
My first time at Hokey Poke and I was very impressed. The food was delish, the location is great and the vibe is amazing.

We chose to have both the broth options and the number 6 poke bowl for main courses, as well as the almonds and edamame beans for starters.

The broths were amazing, perfect for a winter's night. Really warm and tasty and packed with veggies, chicken, noodles and all the other good stuff.

The poke bowl was good, too. It was jam-packed with flavour, and had an array of veggies and beef.

Overall, it's a great little spot that serves health, authentic food that speaks to your soul. We will definitely be back!
Lammies
Ordered the No.3 w/ kale slaw via UBEREATS and it's was everything you would want from a poke bowl. Fresh, crunchy, sweet, spicy and extremely tasty! Can't fault it actually. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu!
Gaby
First time trying a Poke bowl, and Hokey Poke did not disappoint! Loved the laid back atmosphere and super friendly staff. The seating area is very limited, but the food is worth the community tables.
The Chowing Bunnies
This place should definitely be on your go to restaurant list!

They specialize exclusively in poké bowls, so only visit if you know everyone in your party would enjoy poké!

I'm such a fan, the fish is super fresh and the flavour combinations of the set bowls are incredible, there is also the option to choose the ingredients and make up your own poké bowl though.

The meal goes perfectly with Brew Kombucha.

I went for lunch, but have heard the vibe is great at night. Can't wait to be back! They also have a small store at the Mojo Market.
Robin Jansen Van Rensburg
Built my own bowl and it was divine. My boyfriend opted for the hot 4 with vegetarian tofu. Would definitely recommend this restaurant. It's a gem.
Jessica Linford
Really delicious, fresh flavours. I loved the Mexican themed bowl. Will be back to try all of the other options. I've also visited their stall at the Mojo Market - also great.
Zara Wong Soemadinata
The decor of Hokey Pokey is very aesthetically pleasing. Lovely light and healthy meal. I had #5 with nachos which was a huge mistake. I would highly suggest always start with sticky rice because I ended up getting it afterwards. Overall it was extremely delicious and fresh. The thing that would've made it perfect was if the portion was bigger.
Bryan Vally
Hokey Poke is a tricky review. The food alone is a 6! I'm hooked on Poke bowls at the moment and theirs are nothing short of sensational. I'm already planning another visit - but just for a take away I think. Their location is a little dodgy and their restaurant lends itself more towards an "eat and go" than relaxing for a leisurely meal (which I prefer). Still, their food is amazing and I'd strongly and wholeheartedly recommend giving them a try. I have definitely not had my last Hokey Poke bowl!
Robin Michael Moodaley
If you love sushi, fresh flavours and textures, then this is the place for you! Amazingly fresh food, quick friendly service and a laid back atmosphere provides the perfect spot to enjoy your Hokey Poke!
Jack Gorton
Wow did this place suck!, portion size, price, flavour pretty much everything was disappointing I will not be going back. If your dish is 90% rice please have well seasoned rice and I don't mean doused in soy sauce. I had two dishes, 1 the bulogi beef, bulogi is usually thin strips of short rib, this was cubes of chuck, the 2nd was the pineapple chicken, consisted of shredded dry chicken breasts the texture was like eating a weave and again no seasoning on the the rice, to charge R120 and R130 I expect a a little substance either in volume or at least in flavor, sadly neither. I would recommend you spend your money else where.
Jessica Stromin
I've had Hokey Poke twice now, and I love how fresh and delicious it is! The first time I tried I went for a Build Your Own, which ended up being expensive and not as nice as it should have been. My recommendation would be to stick to the suggested combos as they have clearly been well thought out for a reason. I tried the No.3 (sticky rice, avo, crispy onion, edamame beans, mango/pineapple) with salmon instead of tuna (an extra R10) the second time and was very happy with my choice - delicious and fresh and not stingy with the toppings! Great for a sit down meal or a quick, healthy takeaway. So much to love!
Riya Rughubar
Finally got a chance to try this place out and it was even better than expected!

I had a #3 (with some changes) which was delicious mix of salmon, edamame, pineapple, crispy onion avo and ginger with a sprinkle of furikake (sesame seeds) the textures and flavours came together perfectly to create an amazing lunch.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. There wasn't as much of a vibe as I've previously seen there but that was due to the odd timing of my visit.
Samantha Taylor
Wow, one of my new favs! This cute little authentic restaurant is seriously a hidden gem. It's first come first serve and bring your own drinks (which I love). Prices were good and the food was beyond my expectations. If you haven't had a poke bowl before, it is totally unique, full of flavour and a must try.

So this review is actually for the Hokey Poke at Mojo Market...last night after training, we grabbed a Build Your Bowl. This gives you some freedom to play around with the available ingredients they have to offer on their menu. We both opted for the Medium bowl. I chose sticky rice, spring onions, salmon, corn, avo, sprouts and the ponzu dressing. So for those who don't know, The Poke Bowl, is based on sushi, but obviously deconstructed. The salad was great...fresh, light, crunchy and the dressing was the perfect addition. The only iffy part, is that you'll have to dig deep into your pocket, as it isn't the cheapest option at the market.
Nicole Zetler Shapiro
Went to the Hokey Poke in the new Market Mojo Centre in Sea Point. Was very excited to try it out as I really enjoy Poke bowls. Good concept and topping options, but off the bat I was disappointed with the service - they clearly had some teething problems with faulty computer system (taking forever to process our order).

Opted for the original 1 tuna bowl - and other in the group ordered the no. 5 salmon bowl. Overall, everyone thought it was good and tasty - but I'm not completely bowled over (excuse the pun) - it was okay, have had better Poke elsewhere. Also, it felt expensive for what you are getting.

Maybe will try a 'make my own' next time.
Rebecca Starke
This is my new number 1️⃣ in Cape Town! Absolutely delicious. You can order a poke bowl or make your own, I recommend hot 4! Mouth watering. You can't book and they get very full so I suggest going super early. And it's BYOB so the bill is a delight too!
Pusm
Interesting idea but badly executed. First impression is the location, not too pleasant, in a side dark street. Then the very limited menu. And to finish a very inexpert staff who can't communicate with customers. I don't expect them to learn all the single ingredients but at least to remember what we ordered and not leave half of the table without their order. The sad conclusion of dinner is also the dessert. Only options are those frozen ice lollies called Las Paletas, which you can buy at any grocery stores in bulk ....
Sarah Silva
Super vibey spot in Cape Town!
Delicious food with fresh fish & amazing atmosphere. It's good for birthdays as they don't have a liquor license yet so bring wineeeeee!
Shelley Bell
Awesome concept! Loved the 'kitch', random decor. Food was fantastic. Fresh, flavourful and interesting combinations. Friendly service. Will definitely be back.
Reshmi Muringathuparambil
This place really picks up in the evenings thanks to their delicious make-your-own poke, vibey decor and lack of a liquor licence... Suuuch a jol. The food is so fresh - was such a treat. Even the tofu substitute I had was delightful. Would definitely recommend!
Katie Roller
Delicious, fresh food (raw fish + fruit works surprisingly well, by the way) and great service from passionate staff! I would recommend this restaurant to those looking for a healthy, light-but-filling bite to eat. Will be back soon.
Caro Van Aardt
Really cute little spot. We were there at an odd time on a First Thursday. Around 17:00 it seemed like they weren't yet quite ready for customers - fixing the sound, sweeping the floors all around our feet at the table. Nonetheless this is a really cool idea food-wise. Very fresh and massively tasty dishes, wish super friendly service. I had the Special 6 - it was really filling and delicious. I hope this little place makes it!
Kieran Pearce
This place is amazing, fresh and raw. Hawaiian poke done right. I have now tasted every bowl and can't get enough. Will go back weekly if financially possible.
Liani
Really enjoyed the Poke Bowls. I had the number 2 which was delicious and my friend had the number 3. The large portions are very filling.
The staff is very nice & friendly.
We took our own wine. The place has quite a nice vibe.
CT Food Bommer
Grab and go.... but with incredible flavour and super fresh fish. Location a bit hidden and in an awkward always part of town. The interior is clean and simple with Two long bar counters and dotted with a few tables. Ideal for a healthy lunch.
Tremayne West
Fresh, simple and so delicious! Can't wait to go back for more! If they delivered I'd order all the time. Nice interior too, and great to see the owner so hands on!
Blyda De Waal
My new favorite spot in Cape Town for sure. Delicious, fresh ingredients as well as great service from everyone we met. We tried the number 1, 3 and 5 and although they were all super yummy I will be back for more and more number 3. Also really like the simplistic decor - overall just a great vibe. Happy customer!
Jacqueline Koch
I first heard about poke bowls a few months ago and have been intrigued about the concept of deconstructed sushi bowls ever since. How exciting then to find a spot in Cpt dedicated to this dish!
Standard bowls or build your own. The latter still an overwhelming concept because the options are so vast! If I lived in Cpt I would be here at least twice a week and would work my way through the set menu before starting to experiment with my own combinations.
Simple, tasteful food. Vibrant, fresh, colourful and full of texture. I had the #5 whilst hubby had #3. Both were delicious. Live the fresh crunch of the edemame beans. Love this concept. Only wish we had something similar in Jhb.
Definitely on the 'To do' list for the next Cpt trip
Simon Bowes
Great for a quick lunch in town or dinner with friends. An inner city gem with fresh Hawaiian fusion food. The execution of decor/menu/service is spot on. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for something new.

I picked up some takeout from Hokey Poke this evening on my home from a drink in town. I put together my own bowl of vegan goodness with sticky rice and the signature sauce. It's not super cheap, but it's a cute spot, and a novel addition to the Cape Town collection.
Chiara Esposito
Maybe I'm a bit biased because this is one of my great friend's brother's new spot but who cares! Hokey Poke is Cape Town's first dedicated Poke bar. It is mainly seafood based - if you're a sashimi lover like me, I'd be surprised if you haven't been here yet!Walking inside you are given the sense of being inside a restaurant in the land of oriental cuisine, with its cool, white-tiled interior. My dear friend Katie and I tried Poke bowl #3 which involved tuna sashimi, edamame beans, mango, an oriental dressing (I think it contained ponzu), a bit of sriracha mayo and other yummy things. I'm not one usually to mix fruit with savoury and mango sounded weird however I'm trying to adopt an approach of trying new things out of my comfort zone. Well, I'm so glad I did. The bursts of mango flavour - my favourite fruit - did the dish wonders. It was sensational, fresh and I enjoyed every bite. There are other weird and wonderful, new and interesting things on the menu that I would like to try. Thank you, Max, for bringing this gem into the heart of Cape Town! If you have not been yet, please do give them a go, Cape Tonians and foreigners. Who doesn't love a cheeky burst of Oriental Asia to liven up their day? I know I do. Do Hokey Poke and turn your day around for the better.
Talia Lee Cohen
Can't wait to try their Açai berry bowl! 😱😍
But in the meantime I had their number #5. Beautiful delicate ponzu salmon with fresh beets, edamame, leafy greens and crunchy nuts (they hadn't the salmon crisps available). The staff are lovely and I even ran into the owners, who are rather delightful! Cool, chic decor too. The white walls, neon signs and plants cast a vibrant energy ☄️
Craig De Gouveia
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that a poke bar has opened in Cape Town. They offer set meals or the option to create your own bowl. I opted for the latter and created my own spicy veggie bowl with tofu. It was delicious. I enjoyed this with a cup of matcha tea. The staff are super friendly, there are a number of food and drink options to satisfy all taste buds, and the restaurant is well designed. I will definitely be back for more.
Sydney King
Hokey Poke is a brand new spot in the Cape Town CBD. It offers absolutely divine Poke bowls. Poke originates from Hawaii and suits the Mother City to a tee! You can enjoy both fresh, raw fish dishes as well as cooked protein options. The restaurant has set bowls and build your own bowl options ! The house sauce is to die for and the purple labneh is out of this world. It's a great spot for weekday lunch breaks and a super convenient and healthy take away option !

The decor is super hip and funky and something really unique for the area in which it is located. The staff is super friendly and the place is immaculately clean. Give this place a try, you won't regret it !
