Review The Crypt Jazz Restaurant - Cape Town Central

There is nothing like experience in the Crypt in person. It's not just the live music it's all about the local genius artists who play the music make you love this place even more.

Locally flavoured jazz in an amazing setting. 3 piece band an female singer on that evening. Cocktails and OK wine selection. Food not bad, we are everything...

Great service by the friendly and professional staff in a unique environment. The music was great and we thoroughly enjoyed listening and dancing to Afro Fiesta! The food (we had Steak Frites and apple crumble) was good, but not great. This is a place to visit for the music and atmosphere, not the food.

Lovely vibe good food and stunning music. Perfect for a relaxing night!

This restaurant is a bit of a hidden gem, situated underneath a cathedral the view is breathtaking. Historical facts are displayed on the way to the entrance and once you get it it is a very cozy restaurant with amazing live jazz bands to entertain you. Even the waiter sang when I was there. The food is also good and the service was prompt.

Amazing entertainment. On the night a group called Afro Fiesta were there. Highly recommended looking out for them to be there. My food was really good but small portion. Definitely could have done with more food. Had a curry. All other people at our table of 4 were disappointed with their meal. Especially since the prices can be considered above average.

Spent a great evening here despite a mix up with on line booking which meant we joined a sharer’s table which was fine. All the staff were attentive and although the food was a little slow there was great music to keep you entertained. The music was great, with a distinct African style to jazz. The place was packed and everyone was having a good time. Some tables talking over the music but I suppose you can expect this at a jazz restaurant rather than a jazz ‘club’. Good selection of wines and beers and prices by UK standards were a steal. Two good main courses, a bottle of Glenwood Chardonnay, bottle of still water and the cover charge only came to £42 between two. Doorman was good and organised a reputable taxi for us within a few minutes of us wanting to leave around 11.00pm.

Really great music, Future Legends killed it. The only issue we had was the R95 beer and burger special. The website still shows the special but when we asked our waiter about it he said that it is no longer in use, which was a bit misleading.

Cool jazz restaurant. Book ahead. The food is average. Very interesting ambience as the restaurant is set at the corner of a church! The restaurant lists its liquor licence in november so for the next two or three months bring your own. There is a corkage fee... oh and book a table. It is a small intimate place that fills up fast... I will come back here again... I hope that will have better food... the same beautiful music... and a liquor licence ;-)

The Venue is situated in the Crypt of the St George's Cathedral in Wale St Cape Town. It's done out very nicely with Old Pictures of the area, has a small Stage for the Jazz Bands. The Food is Bistro Style they also have a Liquor Licence so everything is on offer, The Wine List is Very Good. They offer discounts for Seniors over 60, I had my 70th Birthday their with a party of 8. There is a Cover Charge off R110 pp food & drink is not included. The Menu has Gourmet Burgers, Fish and French Fries, pizzas, etc The Vegetarian menu is limited. It's has an electic vibe, and cosy seating which are comfortable. Seats about 150 people. Booking is essential as no walk-in's. The Service is 4star waitresses are friendly and efficient but kept busy. Food waiting time around 20 minutes as food is made on Order, Drinks are brought promptly. They do have Credit card machine's which are portable which are brought to the table. The Jazz Bands are different every Evening check on their Website to see who is playing on your Evening and book accordingly so you won't be disappointed.

Five stars for the music & the food! It's probably the most reasonable meal I've had in five weeks of eating out in Cape Town. The only down side is it too hot but the menu served as a good makeshift fan!

It was amazing!! Jazz is life there... And the crypt has many simbolism... You must try

Awesome music on a Saturday night! I took a tapas plate for 2. It was average. No alcohol is served, but BYO is allowed. Lot's of people had their own wine. Go for the music, you'll spend a wonderful evening. Entry is 100ZRA.

What an experience!!! Located in the cellar of the St Georges Cathedral on Central Capetown, this upper class restaurant and live music venue allows for the most enjoyable live music and dining experience ever. It is very intimate, and is an absolute MUST DO.

Very nice people. Great music. They have a new chef so I tried the Chicken Burger and it was the best I have ever had. The music was amazing that the service was great.

I love this place for multiple reasons , it is located in basement of st George cathedral which has great political significance during the apartheid times, they have a gallery of pictures representing a few incidents. Then we attended live jazz music performance which was simply outstanding. They HV played around interior of the church n not changed it a lot which is lovely because of the Victorian details in the architecture

This was an exceptional evening. From the food, to the decor and setting, to the service, and of course the jazz. We were lucky enough to catch the Tina Schouw Quartet when we visited. I can't recommend the place highly enough.

Good music & atmosphere. Bad food and management, and the interior needs a serious lift!
Also, don't put on the back of your menu that "The restaurant is supervised by Franschhoek master chef Matthew Gordon" when we then get told it isn't, when asking the waitress.

So much potential, such a great location and amazing building but the poor service out a huge damper on the night. Waited for about 30 minutes before a waiter even came to our table for drinks orders, then all the mains came at different times. I was finished my main before other people in our group had even received theirs! We had to clear the empty glasses off the table ourselves as the waiters never came to clear. Very disappointed in what could be an amazing place

Can't really say much about the food - it was average at best and the service was virtually non-existent. The upside is that you get to bring your own booze and the amazing building itself (the restaurant is under a cathedral). The live jazz band really made the visit worthwhile.

Great music scene, mediocre food at best. The place could be cleaner, however a bit of dust does suit a jazz bar in some ways. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Cramped. Not a big variety of food, but the little food I had was good (not great). Good music. We had a friendly waiter. In retrospect, it was an okay night.

Don't waste your time here!

My boyfriend and I travelled to Cape Town this past weekend. We were beyond excited to try out new places and the Crypt sounded like our type of vibe. We love food. We love Jazz. And the Venue sounded rad. Dale called to make a reservation but was told to sms instead. He smsed requesting a reservation. We did not receive any response. We waited... We waited. We decided to go to the venue and see if they could squeeze us in by the bar. We arrived and spotted available seats at the bar so we sat down and a waitress asked if we had made a reservation. We apologetically explained that we had tried but no one had responded. Could we sit at the bar? Was three a table available? With a huge huff, the waitress scowled and proceeded to point us to an available table and stormed off. We would have been happy at the bar which no one sat at the entire evening but we sat at the available table.
The waitress proceeded to ignore us for a long time, walking past us and refusing to make eye contact, before we eventually waved her down to make an order. She had a seriously bad attitude, made us feel very unwelcome and obviously was having a bad day as she slammed down our orders on the table despite us thanking her and trying to smile and be nice. It was an over R400 bill, the worst cappucino I have ever had, a disgusting, cold creme brulee that had obviously sat in a fridge for days and some lady singing her personal favourite Mariah Carey songs karaoke style (where is the Jazz??) and then telling the poor overseas tourists chatting in the corner to shut up because she was trying to think... Um...nice... they are paying overseas patrons who have come here to have a good time... It was an awful experience, it ruined what was supposed to be a 'romantic' night and we didn't deserve to be treated that way. If they didn't have space, they could have kindly told us that they were fully booked and we could have had a great evening somewhere else...
Give this place a miss!!!!!!!!

Once, as a student, I came here dressed up for a vampire party of some sorts. Since then, it still has the same ominous gothic vibe, as it is literally a den under a cathedral. Now, instead of pasty goths, it's filled with mostly octogenarians (Guess the death theme stuck 0_0). Rated for bathroom selfies, good jazz music and the ability to hide bad skin under low lighting. Not rated for charging R24 for a coke & very high 'service fees' for alcohol (not corkage, as listed on the website) as they are currently not licensed. Food was average- I had the peri peri chicken breast. Would only go back for the jazz, and stick to the bar with, well, I guess, holy water.

Jazz music on a lovely summers evening in the mother city sounds nice, with a friendly ambiance to fill your desire. But this wasn't the case. My dad and I were looking forward to a eventfull evening, but as he phoned The Crypt, asking for a table to watch Tina Fey, the person on the phone said, they would have to come back to him, because there is limited space (which is not fine, because if there is limited space, try to fill it up by adding more customers.) Later on my dad emailed them asking whether a table is still available, being a little more demanding. An email came back adressed from The Crypt as follow "I you weren't so rude, we would've given you a table." This is unprofessional in the most deguisting way, The Crypt, my message to you is: Stop keeping tables for the "usuals" and open an equal space for everybody. This reveiw could've been alot different if you did.

Seemed like a good idea at the time. But unfortunately thats all it was. We went to go watch a show , a jazz band, an whilst the music was great it was difficult to appreciate it over the loud murmour of the crowd. Paying R75 to get through the door one expects a show. I experianced more of a side attraction. Then there was the food. I get that fancy places charge fancy prices but then you would at least expect fancy food. I ordered the pasta and what was placed infront of me was a small portion of pasta submerged in a tomatoe brine liquid which suppose you could call a sauce. The taste wasnt bad but it wasnt R95 good and neither was the portion size. I could go on ... on positive note our waiter was great he was quick and friendly. Besides the service i dont see a reason to be back... ever.

Lovely little gem. Great atmosphere, small and intimate. Food was delicious, well cooked and well presented. Very attentive waiters. We decided next time we go we need yo go early and make a whole night of it, this time we walked in an hour before closing and we wanted to stay longer!

They've packed these massive wooden tables into the smallest spot..no room to move. Gets extremely hot in there too. Menu is small and very basic. Food is bland and far below par. I had the rumo steak which is expensive for what it is. Service is far from attentive. ..youve got to search for a waitron to flag them down. Would nit return.

The place as a great vibe: great food and great live music with extremely friendly and helpfull service. There is seriously no better place for a jazz lover to spend some money. The menu is basic, but everything is delicious. I especially like the beer battered hake and the bitterballen. The place is great for a romantic evening or a jazz joll with friends and provides probably the coolest decor in the city. Enjoy.
