Review Sotano Restaurant - Cape Town Central

One of the most dog-friendly places we have visited! We all had a great time, even our furry friend. Oh, and don't forget to try the mouth-watering tomahawk steak next time! 😋

Funky vibes and beautiful views. The service was a bit slow, but they were very friendly and the food was excellent. Thanks for a lovely experience. A quick walk over the road to the promenade makes for a great end to a perfect day.

6/10/2023 For early dinner, I thought maybe a burger. It was Friday and there was a nice buzz in the place. Ordered the lamb burger. The bread bun - oh my - STODGY and dry and so thick!!!!!!! The rest of the burger was nice, but that bun! Come on people, get it right! Also - where was the top bun??????????????????? Really!!!!!!!!! 5/10/2023 Had a very late lunch, very early dinner here today. Great service and what lovely decor!!!! Decided on Fish and Chips - bit pricey for R165 and not a huge portion .... was still hungry after that. Lovely location - perfect for when staying in La Splendida Hotel.

Had both lunch and breakfast here last weekend.Staff were friendly and service good. We had the Mediterranean bread for lunchtime was tasty and nice and crisp. The eggs Benedict for breakfast, only point to mention is the toasted croissant was very toasted with black bits and my sift poached egg,(I had requested)was hard.

Awesome food, can really recommend the flatbread. Warm and cozy while it was a typical Cape Town evening outside. The service was friendly and fast. The setting is very well decorated.

I haven't had a bad meal yet. Such great variety too. This is our favourite breakfast and sushi spot. The service is also amazing. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dins you won't be disappointed.

Delicious food, extraordinary service, and comfortable environment. Do try them out

Stunning place! The atmosphere is great here - very relaxing. The staff are EXCELLENT ✨ Theo was very welcoming and smiley 😊 The flatbread, calamari and desserts were delicious and the churros were out of this world good. Also the food was so FRESH 🥬 Would definitely recommend everyone to try this beautiful place ☺️

What a great place! Awesome atmosphere. Great food. My only criticism is that we weren't offered drinks and a menu straight away when we sat down. Otherwise it was an awesome experience and we will definitely be going back.
Pamella Irakoze
Great service and really great food. The food portions are really satisfying with high quality products. Very affordable. Really enjoyed it there and will definitely return.

This is the best restaurant in Cape Town The breakfast just blew my mind The sushi is exceptional The location is amazing The staff are remarkable I’ve been coming here for years now and never had a bad meal. Well done to the Sotano team

I LOVE GOING TO SOTANO. We had the most amazing lunch enjoying the sun on the smoking deck. Dogs all round and such a homey relaxed environment. The team and waiters service is amazing and they always help each other which was so nice to see :) In other words we always had a refreshed drink and constant check ups!!! The interior is absolutely beautiful and the bathrooms are also super clean always.

Always a cool go to place to go for good food and drinks. Chilled spot for sunset too! (Try phone for a booking, someone’s busy but also someone’s way to walk in) They make really good halloumi burgers which aren’t on the menu.
Johannes Eich
We had a very tasty breakfast at Sotano and had nice, shady seats outside. I got the cereal with honey, yogurt and fresh fruit. Nice and light and started the day well with it.
morne lourens
This is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten or been at. I honestly can not fault them on any aspect. Wow amazing brilliant
Arnold van Geuns
We celebrated our Moms 103rd birthday here after we had scattered her ashes opposite the light house in the sea. Sotano accommodated us at the last minute. We were a group of 23 and we are internally grateful to them. The atmosphere, service and food was great. Thank you Sotano
Ralf Dillmann
Outstanding food. Nice ambiance and great service. Will see us again plenty of times. Seafood linguine and paella were super tasty and perfectly prepared. Looking forward to the next time
Gorgeous location! First off, the wine list is great! We ordered the Warwick First Lady sauv Blanc for our midday drink. The ice bowl is massive and greatly appreciated when the sun is beating down on you. We ordered the mussels starter, salmon roses and the salmon salad. All were delicious! The location is fantastic and staff are friendly. The manageress was elegant and friendly.

Great venue. Unique and beautiful atmosphere.

Food : Lam burgers, so tasty and different. They are really refreshing.

Service: We went on a busy night and service was a bit slow. Nontheless, we were still helped graciously and it made the worlds difference.

Amit Bhana
Had the lamb burger which was very average. On't half a bun is given and it lacks flavour. Chips tasted like they were not freshly fried. Also had fish and chips where the batter was also not fried well so it was soggy not crispy.
Cocktail was average. Service was poor on a Friday night where we had to call when we needed anything. Won't go back.
Tomasovicova.monika
Excellent food, beatiful sea view, good wine. Very good service. We have never waited too long. Good choice of tapas. Always a nice breeze from the sea even on hot days. And finally restaurant which is pets friendly! Prizes are bit higher but it is worthy. Finaly something not too touristic with positive attitude and viber. Our dogs also loved it!
Michael Muller
Great place to go for drinks and feel a fresh sea breeze on a hot day. We ordered the paella and risotto and both were underwhelming. Risotto tasted good and was cheesy but was light on squid while the paella lacked flavor. Next time we’ll do tapas and drinks but won’t order mains.
Alan Hooper
Go there late afternoon/early evening for a really chilled spot serving good food, their Tapas menu is the best with a great selection of wine & beer not to mention their selection of Gins.
Andrew King
Beyond average full English breakfast at R100 , ok service although asked for tomato relish which they offer with other items on the menu ( instead of the mushrooms) , food arrived with neither. Asked a few times and staff disappeared . You would think I was asking for the bird itself.

Better options for breakfast in Cape Town .
Rowan Watson
The food is a little salty for my liking. The pricing is definitely on the more expensive side of the spectrum. The friendly staff redeemed the restaurant and bumped it up to a 4 star.
Nalinee Soobramoney
Popped in for a snack and a glass of wine after the work day. It was quite vibey despite it being a Wednesday evening. Food was great albeit a bit overpriced. No doubt , will re-visit when we’re back in Cape Town.
Johan Oberholzer
Always a nice experience, good service and quick delivery. The view is great, and so is the food. Would appreciate some light music outside, but no complaints
Nqobile Msibi
At Sotano we found that the tables for 2 were a bit small for a place that serves tapas so the table was quite full by the time all the food we ordered arrived. We really enjoyed the live music though and the staff were very attentive and friendly which was the perfect touch to my birthday dinner 😊 - I really loved the marinated raw tuna belly and can't wait to try it again but hopefully with a bit less lemon juice.
Gavyn Letley
We used to come here regularly - but the standards have definitely dropped. Service was terrible - order three different types of wine and they had no stock. Refused to allow for corkage. What was most shocking was they had geelbeck on menu - which is on the red Sassi list. Restaurants in South Africa should not be selling highly endangered fish.
Sarah Mcghie
I have always driven and walked past Sotano but never been! So today I was happy to finally arrive when I had a meeting here! There were 3 of us and we had 6 tapas to share
-short rib beef, delicious
-pork belly which was exquisite and my favorite
-calamari, really tasty
-halloumi which was so tasty and had been char grilled a bit
-sirloin steak, also delicious and the mustard sauce with it was amazing
-lamb koftas, good
All in all I had a really fantastic lunch, the vibe and setting was great, service good, bit on the slow side, and I will be back!
Lisa Nyoka
Came here for dinner last weekend because I had heard a lot of hype around it, especially due to their two-for-one burger special on a Monday (not sure if it's still a thing)... So I had the lamb burger to eat, the meat was seasoned well and cooked well but the bread was far too hard, ended up not even having it. The cocktails were also fine, not bad but nothing amazing either. Overall it's a very chilled vibe, and I'd suggest going there for a light lunch over dinner.
Steven Korber
Both meals were inedible - it was either the quality and freshness of the meat, the manner in which it was seasoned, or both. They agreed the meals were inedible but never so much as apologised and the management were unbelievably arrogant. A really horrible restaurant experience.
Magda Oosthuysen
Sat down for a drink as the place has a great location with a partial sea view and seemed to have a nice vibe.

The venue is really great, as is the vibe.

What was very disappointing was the drinks. Freshly squeezed orange juice tasted old and the iced coffee was nothing more than cold milk with ground coffee added - actual really bad taste. I will give it a try again, this time with food, but I am disappointed
Coleen
Over-rated!! Soggy flatbread and about 10 tiny squid tentacles for R70 something. We have eaten here many times and usually get a decent bowl of tentacles. So we called the manageress to query the portion size and she gave us a very vague response and said she would go and find out and get back to us and .......... she disappeared! Service was mediocre but it will be a while before I return or recommend this restaurant. Over priced for portion size!
Shazzyd1
Delicious, egg white omelette & salmon benedict, served with Truth artisan coffees. Also fresh, pure juice. Excellent service for a busy Sunday morning.
Sumendra Chetty
Sotano is perfectly positioned along the scenic Mouille Point strip. With views to die for the outdoor seats are usually snatched up quickly! We were not too disappointed with being seating indoors though- the restaurant has a lovely Spanish eclectic theme going and there was plenty to draw the eye to. The menu is intriguingly packed with a mixture of tapas and mains, we tried out the lamb koftas (best yet!) and the Lebanese flat bread. The portions were so generous I was not too sure if we’d finish the meal. To drink we tried out the wine spritzers- delish! The only criteria Sotano falls short on is service- constantly having to flag down your waiter gets a bit tedious. I’d give them another try though.

Arrived and were seated at a table right next to the live band😂😂 It didn’t take long to request another table further away. The band were excellent but sitting on top of them was not conducive to any conversation. They obliged.
We started with a selection of tapas- squid tentacles, grilled halloumi bruschetta, Soriano’s patatas brava’s ( delicious)
So tapas are definitely the way to go here. They were tasty and interesting.
We opted to go for espetada, moules frites and the Spanish paella.
Both the espetada and mussels were ok but whoever made the ‘ Spanish paella ‘ has obviously never been to Spain. The dish never in a million years resembled any paella I’ve ever had in Spain 🇪🇸
It was more like a vegetarian stew with two lonely prawns and minuscule bits of chicken, fish and calamari. And then you needed to send out a search party to find those bits.
Please don’t call it a Spanish paella rather say South African paella. But enough said - very disappointed
Service was a bit Bermuda Triangleish ( disappeared periodically then reappeared)
Nice ambience.
But this restaurant is not a keeper.
Liani
Absolutely horrible.
The service is terrible. 7 people at our table and one person enjoyed their food. Food is bland. Very expensive for what you get. Avoid avoid.
CT Food Bommer
Efficient and delicious. The top spot in Mouille Point for a breakfast or lunch. Superb service and Great sharing style options for lunch. The tapas board is generous and each morsel well cooked and bursting with flavour. The flat breads are thin and crisp with a perfect amount of toppings.
Lucinda Villain
Lovely space with a great view. Seating a bit tight to accomdate everyone but worth it nevertheless. Started off with a rosemary bread and olive tapenade (warning: this stuff is addictive) Hubby's Paella was the best he's ever had and my Espetada was slightly overcooked but flavorful and tasty with it's roasted veggies. Ended off sharing Baklava which satisfied my insatiable sweet tooth. Great friendly staff too.
Mose Shirley Khubedu
It was the kind of day, no one wanted to waste indoors so we weren't at all surprised to find all the outside tables occupied. We were seated indoors, but asked to moved outside as soon as there was an available table.

The waiting staff were so attentive despite it being so busy. They were so on-the-ball that waiting list and all, we were moved outside right after we received our drinks.

The ambiance was casual and relaxed. Filled glasses of wine, animated conversation and good service. My only complaint is that my oxtail which was right up there flavour-wise, was underdone so I couldn't even get it off the bone.

Despite this great disappointment (I was really looking forward to it) I left with a smile on my face thanks to their chocolate churros that just hit the spot (it could also just be that I was hungry but hey, I left happy!)
Aaron Vandenberg
Best place in cpt to eat sushi and have a nice day with the rivertones to relieve your raggae spirit best desert and best food I really recommend the baklava which was define

Been here a while ago and still thinking about the amazing duck dish I had for lunch. Meat was tender, the skin was crispy and the jus was beyond yummy. It is served with seasonal veg, which is done to perfection.

Others around the table also seemed to be enjoying their meals. One ordered the steak and added mushrroms - had a bite and it was definitely a winner. My other friend ordered the sushi - it was good - but not in my Cape Town top 3 list kind of good (I also stole a bite, lol).

It seems to be a very popoular brunch spot, and will need to return for their breakfast selection at some point.

Awesome place to go for a chilled Sunday where you can enjoy the great Atlantic ocean view while enjoying delicious food surrounded by local Capetonians going about their business...the lamb burger was a great choice and the tapas were amazing.
Simon Chemaly
Our go to when craving fish and chips or for an early morning post Promenade dog walk breakfast.

The fish is amazing, probably the best traditional fish and chips in town, with their small twist in respect of presentation, staff are always pleasant and I thoroughly enjoy their welcoming attitude towards patriots with their dogs.

Very social during sunny afternoons.
Yemurai Muchenje
Sotano would've gotten a full 5 stars if it wasn't for the fact that we had to wait for about an hour before we got our food. This was due to the waiter not putting our order through.

Besides that, this is an AMAZING place. It caters for all sorts of people, couples, singletons, friends/family having dinner. Their live music was the highlight and I know that my friends and I will be going back for that. The food was also great, despite it taking so long to get to us.

Overall, I loved it!
Giulia M. Di Marino
Sotano is my favorite breakfast spot in Cape Town. I love the Mediterranean Breakfast. They have a nice outside area and it's dog friendly. They are also on the entertainer.
Jessica Stromin
Lovely spot on the Sea Point golden mile. Best cocktails and lamb burgers in town! Wednesday 2 for 1 special is awesome, and the sushi's not bad either.
Bebz H
Great location. Right next to the Promenade and the sea. Food was really delicious. We had Tapas: crispy duck, deep fried squid, halloumi cheese and basil bruschetta & Parmesan truffle fries. Every dish was thoroughly enjoyable. We will definitely be back to try the other dishes!
Lezandi Fourie
Sophisticated casual. Each dish is mindfully plated. I particularly enjoyed the chunky glasses that our pina colada's were served in. My chicken supreme dish had unique flavours, not the kind that you can recreate at home.

Nice restaurant close to the ocean. Too bad it's divided from it by the road, it could be even more enjoyable. It's one of my weekend meeting point with friends. Tasty food with light and not so light choices. We generally go for breakfast and than between chats and coofees we end up staying for lunch too, especially on sunny days.
Claire Atkinson
What a perfect place to end off a run along the promenade! Awesome atmosphere with great breakfast, great coffee and the friendliest staff in the area. 5/5. There is 100% chance I'll be returning and spreading the word about this place. Bravo.

Second time dining at Sotano and the experience was nothing short of great! The service was good, food was nice and waiter checked up on us at regular intervals.

Love their Spanish Paella!

The only downer was the dessert menu which didn't appeal to me so had to find another place that I could enjoy something sweet at ☺
Kieran Hilmar Cairncross
Ambience:
This intimate layout is especially fantastic while watching the sunset after a productive day in town. Armed with good company and a healthy bank balance, you're ensured a good time. especially with the presence of live music for supper time.

Food:
Great joint for Tapas. The variety is of a nature that's unique to this restaurant only. Taking simple tapas elements with a unique twist to heighten the experience of old favorites! The beef and chimichurri pintxos is a must.

Service:
The waitresses even performed a tune for us! I love coming to a restaurant where the staff enjoy what they're doing. The job can't be all work.
Magda Spence
Glad we came across this place. Very lively place, it was packed on a Sunday. Service was a bit slow, probably because they were very busy. We went for the tapas and it was absolutely perfect. The prawns were amazing, perfectly cooked. Loved the flavours. Squid tentacles were lovely and crunchy, served on a stone plate. Loved the presentation. Although it was a bit pricey, the food was worth it!
Jeff Singh
Stayed at the hotel above the restaurant for a few days so frequented this place over the time.

Location is beautiful and great. Breakfast sucks - I wouldn't bother going here for that. Pretty standard and nothing to rave about.

Their food however is good food, enjoyed all starters and mains tried. Was thoroughly impressed with their starters, perfect portioning sizes and presentation.

Drinks are expensive but it's a lovely hangout place.
Ainsley Ai Stewart
Great service from Sharon!!

We had their Pork and Chorizo Croquettes, Moroccan Chicken, Confit Lamb Loin and Spanish Paella - the chicken and lamb were absolutely incredible!

I will be back and definitely recommend checking them out.
Jacqueline Koch
Have been here several times for breakfast. Great spot with outdoor seating overlooking the promenade.
I'm always looking for breakfast options which are not the generic/standard eggs and bacon etc and Sotano delivers.
Their truffle scrambled egg breakfast in particular is a winner but also love their wild mushroom and poached egg.
Eggs are always well prepared, good coffee and efficient service
Jenna Rodd
This is a lovely breakfast spot right on the promenade which is great on a summer day because you can sit in the sun and watch the sea and activity on the promenade. I found it very reasonably priced as far as breakfasts in Cape Town go.
Theoca Voges
If it's not bad enough that I had to drag the umbrella over my table to keep us from getting wet, I had over cooked chicken, warm wine and a waiter that asked for more than I tipped her. No.
Your venue might have a vibe when there is a band but you can't hide terrible service and shoddy cooking skill.
Viantha Naidoo
Perfect sundowner spot. The service is scarce and inattentive but the food is excellent. Very friendly to pets, which makes it a great post-walk snack spot as it's just across the road from the dog friendly bit of the promenade 🐶👍 Roasted aubergine starter and pan-fried chicken w/ gnocchi, shimeji mushroom and truffle jus = 🙏
FoodMissionary
What a lovely place for a sundowner on a summers day. One of Sotano’s biggest assets is their setting; overlooking the sea and right by the Mouille Point promenade.

Their tapas is delicious but on the pricy side, that’s why I love their lamb burger special. That gives us with lighter pockets a chance to enjoy Sotano. This Wednesday evening deal is actually amazing at just R45 for one burger (two for the price of one). I decided to also taste their squid tentacles with aioli which was lekker.

One point of critique: there are so many people walking around doing different things (a manager, a host lady, your waiter, other waiters, 2 or 3 people clearing plates around and on your table) that some things get overlooked. They probably thought someone else had given us cutlery but we waited about 5 min for it after the burgers had arrived. The lady who noticed we were looking around for assistance was apologetic, no hard feelings. When moving from inside to outside ownership of the table seems to get slightly lost.

On the plus side: the wine and cocktail menu is extensive and good!
Epikoros
Beautiful view of the bay across road from the Mouille Point promenade. Good coffee. Service tends to be lacklustre albeit friendly when one does get the attention of a server.

Standard breakfast fair with omelettes that tend to be overdone. Mushrooms on toast and the Mediterranean dish of poached egg, avocado and halloumi cheese are possibly best offers for breakfast.
Bame Modungwa
Second time at Sotano last night though the first time was some years back. Made a last minute reservation for dinner and was well accomodated. Had an outside table but pity the Cape Town wind was not cooperating. I was moved inside without issue. We opted for the tapas so we could try a little bit of everything. Had the truffle oil Parmesan chips that reviews rave about and loved them. Also had the braised beef, prawns, pork belly and duck wings. Braised beef was the winner, paired well with the fries though the dish is accompanied by a slice of toasted baguette. The duck wings were dry, in the efforts to give us a crispy wing all we got was dry unfortunately. The sauce for the duck didnt do it any favors. Pork belly was okay, also a little on the dry side and not much to rave about, and the prawns were lovely. Service was good, had an attentive waiter and we had an all round good experience!
Daniel Da Silva
My go to place in Cape Town, been here countless times and always excellent food, service and drinks.
The food is Mediterranean and really hits on all the original flavours.
JayRo
Amazing vibe, great location and view. Awesome for a hot summer day. Service is somewhat lacking unfortunately, very slow and not very good. Ordered a lamb burger with no tomato, it came with tomato. The burgers are served on little cutting boards, which personally I'm not a fan of. They never seem clean and your food/sauce keeps spilling off. The burger patty itself was really good, a tad salty but that can be overlooked. While there we saw some flat breads coming out, they looked amazing so will definitely be back to try those!
Dayne Williams
Really nice summer vibe, grabbed some paella and seared tuna (after a game of putt putt just up the road) which was some of the best we've had in Cape Town and, as such, we left happy and full. Warm and attentive service. Fairly pricey which is to be expected on that strip but used the entertainer app which made it really reasonable.
Tiyaarah Cloete
Decided to go here for tapas. It was really average honestly. I was completely underwhelmed. Their prices are okay, and there's a bit of a view but I left unsatisfied
Paula Zolezzi
Sotano is one my favorites. I've been there many times for a quick light lunch, many times for a snack and a drink before dinner, other times with my granddaughters, and dinner with a Spanish friend. Also with a friend from Angola

I like the Mediterranean flair and the decor, I find the service friendly. The classy presentation of dishes is appealing and in terms of price it's reasonable. It's well heated outdoors when the chilly winter breeze starts to be felt and a comfortable spot over summer.

I've met a variety of people of diverse origins and nationalities in this restaurant. A restaurant I wish rego visit again soon.

The Benedict sauce they prepare with eggs is a favorite. I've also had a their interesting, well prepared and seasoned salads and tasted their calamari.

Certainly convenient and close to the walk along the Mouille Point lighthouse and promenade.
Michael Wright
Breakfast here are always a treat. Dog friendly with a wide range of pricing options to suit everyone in the group. Dog friendly with a chilled vibe.
Simira
Was a first time at Sotano this morning and was quite surprised. While the coffee was terrible, the breakfast was large in size and taste. We had the breakfast flatbread and was enough to share. The restaurant gives off a chilled vibe with a great view.
Chuma Khumalo
Set right on Beach Road, Sotano has a beautiful view of the promenade. Not only is their menu amazing but they have an extensive wine offering as well! With at least 4 options for each type of wine, I was in heaven 😍 The waiting staff are friendly and attentive which makes for an overall wonderful experience
Omar Youssef
Great and friendly vibes specially on Fridays and Saturdays, the band playing on the background are amusing, a beautiful voice waitress some times shares the band with minutes of singing, it's diverse in terms of cuisines on their menu (cons) as i believe in specialization and authenticity more than diversity and rich menus.
Authenticity: 3/5

Taste balance: 3.5/5

Service: 3/5

quantity per money value: 2.5/5

Restaurant health code: 5/5

First time at Sotano this morning, and it was definitely a great way to start a Sunday morning. The view is picturesque, the weather was beautiful and the breakfast was delicious. Between us we had the salmon and cream cheese on rye, salmon benedict, plain scrambled eggs and the muesli bowl. The portions were decent, the food tasted great and it was really well presented. The only mishap was that our table was slightly wobbly, which caused Darios mom to spill her coffee all over her white pants! Other than that, an awesome way to start the day.

✔good breakfast options
✔tasty food
✔beautifully presented food
✔excellent view

✖abit pricey
✖ small coffee mishap which dampened the experience The Cake Queen

Such a lovely venue for dinner or drinks.
The atmosphere is great. Sometimes there's a live band on the weekend.
They make a wonderful piña colada and churros :)
The food is great and they are not overly priced.
If you're looking to miss some traffic after work this spot is great.
Service has never been bad and always willing to accommodate.
Give them a try.
Ashirvad Lobo
Was recommend this place by a colleague who said it's her favorite place. Found why today! Amazing location, great crowd and fantastic food.
MattJBlack3
A few of us went to Sotano to watch the rugby a few weekends ago. We had a range of their breakfasts, which were excellent although portions were a little on the small side. Will definitely be back! Great coffee too!
I Love Foodies
Mouille Point is one of those beachfront areas I associate with sunshine, sitting outside, and watching the ocean. So, when my partner wanted to head to Sotano, one of the wonderful restaurants along the Mouille Point stretch, on a cold and stormy day, I felt a little apprehensive. Nonetheless, since I had never been there and had been wanting to try it for months, I faced the miserable weather and looked forward to a new foodie adventure.
Johnny Jol
One of my go-to places when I'm in the area... usually after a weekend Promenade walk. Has a nice vibe, close to the beach and decent fare. We usually go for a selection of tapas, but I always, absolutely, unfailingly MUST order the Truffle Parmesan chips.
Jaco Coetzee
Most probably the worst experience I have ever had. Firstly our food gets delivered to the wrong table. The wrong table touches the food, then realises it's the wrong food and the waiter moves it to our table. When the move takes place, the garnish flies all over the place.Secondly, we asked for extras. The extras are wrong. Takes a few minutes to correct this. Food arrives again, but I am already finished with mine. No apologies at amy stage. Just another dump with a view.
Lindie White
Sotano was a preferred meeting place for our circle of friends because it was open till late and they served the most mouthwatering Fish Goujons. Then things changed - the dish wasn't on the menu when we visited again and the seared tuna was disappointing. Judging by the packed tables over weekends, however, it's still very popular. Outside there's usually a cosmopolitan, loud crowd including large groups of friends and families while the inside area offers a more subdued ambience. Almost like two separate restaurants. Perfect location on the Promenade near the Lighthouse and Green Point Park.
Chloe
Sotano seems to be a bit unsure of what they are. It looks like a really nice upmarket/fine dining restaurant but there were people playing cards at one table and the live music was nice but incredibly loud and didn't seem to suit the place. When we arrived they just grabbed menus from other tables and literally through them across the empty table so there was no presentation. We were six people and were put at a massive 9 seater table (we booked ahead of time) so not only did we have to should over the music but we had to shout across the table at each other. The food wasn't bad, I had the slow roasted pork belly which was a bit overdone but otherwise really good. We had the Mediterranean platter to share as a starter which was delicious. They don't do corkage and wouldn't even make an exception for one of our party's birthday who had brought a special wine. Food was good but overall experience was disappointing.
Jemal
The absolute best breakfast I've had in an extremely long time!!! It's a little bit different to your normal bacon and eggs - which was just what I was looking for. It was the Mediterranean breakfast, the flavours of everything on the plate worked soooo extremely well...this is a must have for your next brekkie if you're in the area. I would highly recommend it to everyone, oh yes and don't forget to top this amazing brekkie off with a glass of champagne (it works well together)!!! I ate it all so quick I couldn't even snap a pic...next time!!!

Came through to Sotano for supper last night. A very spacious restaurant and being a Sunday night not very busy. I ordered the Seafood Paella which was packed full of chorizo, fish, calamari, chicken, prawns, and veggies. An absolutely delicious dish with alot of character and texture to it. All round the food was good, and service was great. I also had a classic Mojito which was true to its name and great.

After literally spending hours debating where we were going out for dinner, we decided on The Butcher shop & Grill in Moullie point, where after being seated were told that there was a ridiculous R200 per head minimum despite the fact that the restaurant was not fully booked or busy and most of our group was not very hungry and were planning on having a smaller meal. Out of frustration we therefore settled on Sotano despite reading the very mixed reviews online. The restaurant is fairly large however the interior design appeared rather random giving a bit of a strange ambiance. However, the experience only improved from this point onwards. I ordered the Espetada which was delicious and cooked to perfection, it really exceeded my expectations. Our entire group was impressed with the meals even though some only ordered starters or desserts. The service was good and our waiter was very friendly though he could have been slightly more clued up on the menu. Overall, a very pleasant experience that surpassed our expectations! Will be back in the near future!

Arrived for a lateish lunch with friends. It was quite empty to my surprise but service was really great, food was amazingly delish! I ate the Shiraz braised short ribs tapas, my friends ate the Beef Tartar and Seared Tuna. The quality of food was amazing and the quantities were great! I was super full after just eating my Tapas. My friends said the Seared Tuna was perfect and exactly what she was craving for and the Beef Tartar was great meat and the spices to mix were a great combination. The waiter kept on checking on us and was speedy with bringing the drinks. Looking forward to go back to try the mains ;) Well done guys keep up the great work!!!
Lauren Van Haght
If you, like me, enjoy a basic breakfast with eggs and bacon, this is not the place for you. However, if you're into breaking your fast with glamour, they have some spectacular salmon eggs benedict and French toast with an amazing selection of fruit and delicious coffee (well priced).

On a recent visit to Sotano's, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the sun set while sipping on their amazing tasting Margaritas and Mojitos. That was why I was so disappointed with the taste of their Spanish Paella (R145) which consisted of short grain rice cooked in pepper, tomato, chicken, chorizo, line fish, prawns, calamari, mussels, white wine, fish stock and saffron. The portion size was impressively large, but it was very tasteless. The rice grains were too dry unlike any paella I tasted before. I am not sure if that is how the Spanish actually make their paellas. But I rather prefer the paellas with the moist rice packed with all the flavours of the different sea food ingredients we normally get at restaurants around South Africa.

What a horrible experience.

Food, service and management are all extremely poor. Not to mention your valuables are at risk when user their "camera watch". Felt reassured when dining under the many cameras surrounding us, yet when valuables were stolen from our table; the management simply stated that the cameras don't work and this happens all the time. A big red flag in my book considering this should be a major priority. Not only that but we were not even compensated for our beverage and food considering our valuables were taken. Furthermore, they never followed up and stated they were too busy when we called daily to investigate the matter with the owner from whom we've heard no word.

Probably typical service you'd expect of that for a restaurant with only a 3.5 star rating

Lesson learned and BEWARE!

What a terrible experience. This was my third time to Sotano and there will be no more. The first time I went we had to send our food back, we waited for over an hour and walked out the Restaurant. 2nd time was average but the third still makes me feel sick. Meeting a few friends for drinks after work I felt safe with all the cameras around. We were seated for just under two hours and when we left I noticed my laptop bag had been stolen from right under us. It held other valuables up to R20,000 and it's safe to say I was not made a priority. I was then told that this happens a lot and that phones and wallets are often taken from Sotano. None of the cameras work and therefore we couldn't catch the culprit, just blank screens where the footage should have been. I had to call everyday on updates and was told that they were too busy to follow up. Not a word from the owner which would have been nice as it was in their restaurant that everything of mine was stolen. Not a care in the world... Obviously because it maybe happens so often. It was the worst restaurant experience I have ever had and I honestly recommend anyone who is considering going, to rather stay away. 1 star management, 1 star service, 1 star food. Sorry

Our visit to Sotano was a spur of the moment decision - thanks to the Entertainer, the stunning winter afternoon it had turned into and a desire to have some ice cream from the Creamery, we settled for an early dinner at Sotano.

I love the layout of the restaurant! Very spacious, perfect for a hot summer's day, yet also cozy enough for a winter afternoon. We arrived at a time when they weren't busy at all and could basically choose anywhere to sit. We chose a round table, enclosed by a comfy leather couch (perfect for cuddling, if I might just add). Out waitress was very friendly, promptly bringing us menus and water for the table.

Their tapas look good, but we weren't too hungry so we decided to share a starter. We had the pork flatbread, which honestly sounds much more eccentric on the menu than it does in real life. Basically just garlic flatbread with a few cubes of bacon on it. I don't think I'd order it again.

Mains were a different story all together - grilled salmon and a lamb burger. The burger was something different - not really a burger, more like a piece of bread stacked with a lamb patty, hummus, avocado and onion rings. But it was quite tasty, scoring a 4/5. The combination of the lamb with the hummus and avocado worked perfectly, but the dish was letdown by the chips, which resembled McDonalds' fries and tasted mediocre as well. The salmon however... Wow! I was super impressed! Definitely one of the best grilled salmons I've ever had, scoring a solid 5/5! Lovely crispy skin, meat cooked to perfection in a delicious marinade. Served with the best black rice I've ever tasted (which says a lot because I'm not really a fan of rice). And I absolutely loved the sauce it came with! Worked perfectly with the dish and I can highly recommend ordering this!

Overall, a lovely experience, made even better by the Entertainer's voucher, an awesome waitress and top notch company! I definitely will be returning in the summer to enjoy an afternoon of cocktails and tapas!

I love Sotano! Great vibe and wonderful breakfasts. We had the Mediterranean with haloumi, Avocado, Sundried tomatoes and a poached egg....bursts of flavour. The egg white omelette with salmon, feta and mushrooms was good but needs something more to lift it up. The only reason why I'm not rating it a higher score is the service is lacking...slow and you tend to always be looking for a waitron and when you do see one it is bit of a drama trying to wave them down for attention.

I took my parents here for dinner. When we got there the service was bad. Nobody came to help us. I brought a nice bottle of wine but they proceeded to tell us that they don't do corkage. I checked their website beforehand and saw no indication of this. I don't recommend going there. Apparently their sushi isn't bad.

A lovely restaurant with a truly spectacular view. I had the beetroot risotto which was absolutely delicious, however I did find their menu a little on the pricey side, although that could be expected with the location. The service was a bit slow, but all round a good spot for a sunny Saturday afternoon lunch.

My Friday just got super interesting. Dinner at Sotano is a must do. Super delicious Portuguese grilled sardines are a must have. A must have🍴🍸

Let me start by saying if I were a white male this rating would be a lot higher. I went here on a date with someone and hence went through the whole process of calling well in advance so we would have a great table to sit at, but my name is a dead give away regarding my ethnicity and hence we were placed in an obscure corner at an uncomfortable table. After various complaints we moved to a better table with a slightly better view (the view is a large part of the reason anyone wants to eat in Mouille Point).

Now that that's out of the way, the paella is great and I would recommend going there despite my mixed experience as it's a part of being black and in Cape Town.

I've been to a lot of restaurants in cape town but I can confidently say that Sotano has the best Pina Coladas I've ever tasted. Creamy and a perfect balance of flavours. Pure zen.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. AND TERRIBLE/NO FOLLOW-UP OF MY REPORTING OF THE INCCIDENT.

I wrote the following email to Sotano on the 17th of Feb. Today is the 17th of March, no response.

Horrible.

Dear Manager/Owner of Sotano.

I wanted to give you some critical feedback about a recent terrible experience at your restaurant.

I did not raise it at the time for two reasons:

1. I was upset and would not have reacted well in public;
2. I didn't want to upset the other customers by making a scene.

But I thought it important to raise this issue privately, after calming down and reflecting on the incident.

I also really enjoy coming to your restaurant, so I want to make sure that next time, if there is one, I do not experience the same issues.

My fiance and I were at Sotano two days ago, (Monday 15 Feb 2016).

We had a reservation for 7.30 pm in my name.

Our terrible experience started from the moment we arrived:

1. When we walked through, the team didn't look like they were sure if they wanted us to sit down or not. We decided to simply point ourselves to a table and sit there.
2. After receiving the menus, we placed our orders. I ordered the Avo & Feta flat bread and requested extra bacon. My fiance ordered the Cesar Salad with Bacon & Chicken. We also requested a small plate of sushi to start, with two glasses of water and a gin and tonic to drink for my fiance.

The drinks were served and the sushi followed shortly afterwards.

3. However, 45 minutes later our food had still not arrived. It was only then, that the waiter arrived to inform me that there was no Avo to serve on my flat bread. Surely it could not have taken 45 minutes to establish that there was no Avo for the flat bread? Unless I'm missing something?
4. So I placed a different order for a Lamb Burger, hoping that it would be prioritised as we had been waiting for 45 minutes.
5. It was only after I asked how long the food would take to arrive, after a lengthy waiting period, did the waiter and the floor manager go check with kitchen.
6. After 1 hour 30 mins our food finally arrived. There are people who arrived after us and ate before us, and left, while we were still waiting.
7. In our waiting, (for an hour and 30 mins), not one person came to give us the reassurance that our meal was being prioritised (because clearly it was not).

For the kind of money we spend in your establishment surely it cannot be too much to expect a little better than this?

Surely?

Regards,

Michael
We went for the lamb burger special last night (two for one, try it it's amazing)

The service staff were generally quite slow and confused but not enough to ruin a good night.

Restaurant has quite a nice location on the promenade for sundowners but we went for dinner and their indoor seating didn't feel like too much of a compromise either.

the food is really delicious. Please do not leave without trying the truffle + parmesan fries...
Absolutely loved those.

Sotano is a great spot for sundowners and a small bite on a Sunday. I love their tapas and sushi menus and can't resist a nibble when I pop to this spot for a glass (or 2) of wine.

Went here for breakfast last week for the second time. I do like the breakfast menu but it does feel like it could use some more options. The service was quite slow and the tables were sticky.

I had the chai latte which was really good and I would definitely have it again. For mains, I had the scrambled eggs with truffle. It was quite a disappointing dish because the eggs were a bit hard and the truffle oil was overpowering after a few bites. My parents both enjoyed their meals, especially the mushrooms on toast with a poached egg.

Overall, mixed feelings about breakfast here but the highlights were the chai latte and the mushrooms on toast.

Always busy. Food always quality. Sometimes live music. Sometimes noisy. Once the chef lost his way with the chocolate fondant. But will go there again and again.

We sat down after a walk on the promenade for dinner. The dogs were allowed to sit outside with us. The drinks and food arrived promptly - we had a wonderful, friendly waiter. The seared tuna was cooked fantastically - a portion perfect in size - not too small nor too big. The seafood linguini - not too saucy - lots of seafood (calamari, prawns and Tuna). Will definitely be back

Decent breakfast without being fantastic. In fact, the omelette and eggs benedict looked a lot better than they tasted, probably due to a lack of herbs and seasoning and the fact that the omelette was overcooked. Service a tad slow and coffee pretty average. I have had better experiences at this restaurant and will return.

UPDATE: excellent lunch: beer battered kingklip, juicy fillet and grilled halloumi all beautifully xooked and presented. A job well done

Im not sure how to rate Sotana fairly. Whilst their food is delicious, their breakfast divine, their service is absolutely pathetic.

My boyfriend and I visited Sotana on 3 separate occasions over this Dec/Jan silly season.
The first time was for their sushi because it truly is epic. We had been previously and had had a fantastic meal.

Once we eventually caught the attention of a manager, we were seated at a table right at the stairs, so we could not be missed by any waiting staff.
After 10 mins of waiting and managerial staff staring at us as they walked by, we were eventually offered menus by a manager who appeared from nowhere.
My bf ordered a beer and I a glass of wine. His beer arrived fairly quickly but he had almost finished it by the time my glass of wine had arrived. The bar is listerally just down the stairs.
We were eventually offered to order food, to be told they weren't taking sushi orders for the next hour or more due to the backlog.

The following visit was a much more pleasant experience, we both had yummy breakfasts, although my flat white seemed to lack any coffee. Our waitress was excellent, even rhough super busy

Our final visit was a dinner with some out of town guests.
The place was extremely busy and our orders were eventually taken by a waiter. - not the same one who took our drinks order?
I ordered fish and chips but asked for the fish to be grilled and not battered. The waiter told me this would take longer and suggested I order it as is. Of course, i declined saying Id happily wait the extra time for food I wanted to eat.
The food arrived to the table fairly quickly, what a pleasant surprise. It looked delicious. Only for my fish to arrived battered, so I sent it back asking them to grill, as per my order.
A waitress came past to apologise, although not her section, she caught the error and was trying to sort it out for me.

By the time the entire table had finished eating their meals and with some waiting time, there was still no sign of my food.
I evetually cancelled my food order with the on-the-ball waitress, Sian. When I sat back at my seat, the food had arrived.
Well i tell you, the 3 and a bit measly pieces of kingklip would not have been enough to feed a 4 year old child. Truly a disgrace and a cheek to charge patrons R130 for a meal like that.

Unfortunately, no manager even bothered to apologise for the long wait, the saving grace of this place is their excellent waitress Sian.

I have not been back as yet, I must say I am hesitant to but perhaps I will wait until mid Feb to fo back and try get a plate of sushi.
Hopefully they will be able to handle the kitchen demands by then.

What a vibey place to just happen upon while searching for a bite to eat! I can picture having cocktails while watching the sun set, though we just popped in for lunch before a game of putt putt.
The mojitos are absolutely delicious and surprisingly tasty even though they have quite a kick to them!
For those that love tapas, this menu offers one of the bigger arrays that I have seen to choose from.
We chose to share the beer battered fish and chips, which isn't your standard since they use kingklip - so good! But the highlight was the tapas dish of grilled calamari tubes tossed in a delicious spicy sauce with spicey chourico. The portion was very decent too even though it was only a starter portion!
The staff were friendly and chirpy, always a good sign to see happy staff!
Side note - I loved the decor and design of the interior!
I look forward to returning to check out their live music evenings and their "vibey nightlife"
Samantha
There is no signage outside and when i questioned that, the waitress explained "it says Sotano on our shirts". Once you eventually find the place it is actually really nice. We were a little slow to get served initially but once we received our menus, everything was great thereafter (including service). Food and cocktails were awesome. Really enjoyed it.

I've been to Sotano twice now and every time has been an absolute treat. The vibe is great and the food never disappoints. Service is efficient and friendly and the lovely decor adds to the vibey ambience.
If I had one complaint it would be the live music, though very cool in principle, it makes it quite difficult for an one sitting inside to enjoy their meal as it's incredibly loud, but even with that I'd go back any time.

Sotano in Mouille Point has a great view and a nice breeze, which was needed on this hot day.
The wonderful service made it a very pleasant experience. The waiters were focused and helpful and went out of their way to make us comfortable and looked after.
I had prawn tapas, then the fish of the day on beans. Delicious!
I'd def go back.

I really love Sotano's location close to the lighthouse on Beach Road in Mouillie Point.

It really has a good vibe and the great setting adds to the dining experience.

It is a great place for sundowners and their breakfasts are great.

For breakfast I simply had scrambled eggs with avocado on the side while others had the Sotano Omellete (egg white only) and the Mediterranean Breakfast. The food is fresh and the helpings are quite generous.

Besides for receiving two coffees at the table in dirty cups, the Origin coffee which they serve is very good and is a great way to get breakfast started.

Service was a little slow but the environment and being on holiday makes it okay to wait that extra bit longer.

I would definitely recommend Sotano for a good breakfast and sundowners.

Very cool place to chow down. A fantastic menu to choose from, you have a great view of the ocean if you are luck enough to get a seat on the balcony. The service is rather slow but other than that I had no complaints. I would say, go and give it a go! :)

Fantastic location! Breakfast not so fantastic. There's too much vinegar in your poaching liquid fellows. There's too much vinegar in your hollandaise too. So.... the eggs benedict was below par, the Mediterranean breakfast was not a very well balanced plate (there's tart on tart going on in there mostly because of the vinegary egg and sundried tomato pesto plus lemon juice covered avocado). Not a herb to help a brother out. The bed of rocket got the pesto dressing treatment so that didn't help. Ah, and a note to everyone in every kitchen everywhere: please rinse your halloumi and feta in fresh water before serving. The salt brine is a preservative not a flavourant. The scrambled eggs looked great though. Try that. Definitely try that. Lastly, the manager was really very switched on. Great job. Keep that guy.
**the above average rating is solely on account of the decent service, good management and great location. If you're looking for a great breakfast then look further.
**addendum a: a different, later visit to Sotano involved a mediocre chickpea and calamari salad and a ridiculous thing they claim is a flamkuchen (flame tart). Folks at Caveau.. make your own dough. Don't leave substandard food on your menu. That thing is an embarrassment. To the reader: for the love of god just order the burger. Or the tuna salad (it looked good on someone else's plate). The end.

Unfortunately, we didn't experience Sotano as many others have. To me, it was one of the most unpleasant restaurant experiences to date. Here's why: the restaurant inside was noisy, and not like the lovely noise of people enjoying themselves, but rather like a clanging, banging noisy. Every time a blender went on or something was dropped, it was as if I was in the middle of a war zone, and I felt a strong urge to dive for cover. The cappucino was luke warm and tiny. The stuffed calamari starter was bitter and dry. (I sent it back.) The duck was rubbery, the carrot puree was cold and the portion was small. And throughout this catastrophe, the waiter was very scarce. The only reason I'm giving a 2 is that my husband's fillet was very good. I left hungry. (Sad face) The cherry on the top was an incorrect bill. Will definitely not go back....

Sotano is a firm favourite in my family - whether it be for celebrations or just a well-deserved break, they always add to the occasion.

The ambiance is one of relaxed dining, catching up with friends and enjoyment. the staff are very friendly and willing to assist. They also put out blankets outside - the weather should not deter their guests from enjoying the beautiful view!

Their calamari is out of this world and fresher than can be believed! Definitely worth the trip and should be added to your list if you have not yet been there.

Ate at Sotano with friends. There us an updated menu and a wide variety to choose from. But we could not find the restaurant as signage is very poor. I had the grilled salmon with squid ink rissoto, it was perfectly prepared and tasted drvine. My husband had the lamb burger and he also raved. Will definitely be returning.

So I've obviously been to Sotano a few times before (see my blog post) but thought I'd give a little update: They've changed a few things on their menu since the last time I've been there and my new favourite is their seafood linguine. Absolutely yum! Includes a healthy portion of fish and calamari and a few mussels and prawns. Went with two friends who had the lamb burger and skewered beef fillet, a little pricy for what it was, but they still enjoyed it.
