This is my spot.
Its affordable, a lovely staff, a nice family vibe. Astounding food. Grahh I'm hooked.
I have no idea how I'm only discovering this now
Bruh those crying rolls I swear, if you are a hot food addict they are the best.
Tuna sashimi and dragon too.
They give you chappies with the bill, this place is great 🤣
This is the hidden gem of Cape Town. The owners are amazed no and the sushi selection are on points. They are tasty, generous and creative. It's always a pleasure to go there !
This place is amazing. They don't skimp on the fish or portion sizes and the quality of the food gets a 12/10 from me and that's just the food. The staff are super friendly and they know how to make a customer feel at home and leave with an amazing eating experience on a whole. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for decent sushi (Actually more than decent) at a reasonable price.
Little sushi spot with very reasonably priced and delicious sushi. Service was friendly and efficient. It's a little spot - but very quaint and charming in its own way.
Tiny unobtrusive family run sushi restaurant with exceptional service and fabulously fresh sushi. Always received with a smile and ur bound to leave smiling. A true hidden gem of Cape Town.
Found my new favourite dim sum place! It's quite pricey, but I can understand why though. They are made to order and dim sum is rather an art to get right. I loved it all. So authentic and reminded me of my time in Asia. Even the location of this restaurant is reminiscent of Asian alley ways and finding gems at the end of the dodgy alley. The owners are so friendly and hail from China. Which is why they just got all the dishes so right. I ordered the fish ball soup, BBQ pork bun, fried beef dumplings, pork steamed dumplings and the steak prawn dumplings. Can't wait to return and wade through the rest of their dim sum menu.
Hands down the best sushi I've had in Cape Town, if not SA, and I've tried them all. Â Husband and wife team who care about sourcing only the freshest fish & preparing consistently excellent sushi with voluptuous cuts. Â Have been going here for 20 years and the quality is still every bit as good. Â Somehow they manage to lay their hands on real toro from time to time, and it is an experience! The ambience is average, the service depends on how busy it is (only one waitress), the prices are good considering the cost of fish and the generous slices.
Really like the sushi here, like it was so worth it. Sushi was super fresh and it was HUGE! So they were definitely not overcharging! Probably one of the best in Cape Town!
I had sushi here a couple of times before the store moved, and decided to pop in again when I saw their new store. It's located off a corridor I usually wouldn't have entered, and isn't easy to spot off long street. I was so glad we tried it again. The staff are friendly and theres clearly a core group of dedicated locals that have realised the charm of the restaurant. The sushi really is delicious. I love their tempura avo sushi, and my boyfriend tried a rice-less roll that was melt in the mouth delicious. They have lots of interesting options and even have more imaginative vegetarian sushi than usual. We didn't try the dim sum, only the sweet custard steamed bun (which was yum). I'm sure they're as good as the sushi
I love this place! Haven't gone in years but ended up using Ubereats. Their tabasco carrot salmon california has always been my favourite! Honestly love their sushi!

I have never been ushered into a susi restaurant by an energetic and vibrant shop owner before; talk about a welcoming! The restaurants theme and decor is well done, the intimate environment is pleasant. The sushi is worthy to be glorified as it is special with mouth watering flavour, texture, appearance and consistency of quality. Definitely a recommendation to all who find themselves in and around Long Street in need of value for money. Returning for more sushi soon.
My mom and I usually go to Minato's for lunch, it's our usual meeting point when we're working in the city. It's a quick escape to quint little restaurant for the tastiest Tuna sashimi and miso soup you have ever tasted...literally. The freshest ingredients to hit your taste buds. The lady that runs the place is always super friendly and helpful, her passion for her restaurant clearly shines through. We love it and will keep coming back.. Thank you!
Warm and friendly welcome! Exciting choice of enticing sushi rolls...
Unbelievable flavor and selection from simple ingredients. You can't go wrong!
The owners, staff are phenomenal with wonderful hospitality. Non pretentious environment, just great value for quality Japanese cuisine.
If you lucky, you may just get to have some tuna torro (tuna belly) amazing!
This place never ever ever disappoints. Fabulous friendly woman running the show and always with a smile while hubby prepares the sushi and my personal favourite the Age Dashi Dofu soup *YUM* and ofc the Original Special always impresses. It's a lovely intimate setting that really makes you feel at home.
Minato is one of those truly unassuming gems. The menu is great and boasts quite a large variety of sushi. The food is fresh and delicious and you are likely to discover unique sushi rolls. The venue is sadly not as kitsch and undergroundy as the last one, but this is redeemed by the friendly, welcoming family who run the place.
Don't let the hole in the wall deter you. It's not typical a Cape Town restaurant at all but the sushi is up there with the best!! Fresh, fast, inventive and reasonably priced. Service is wonderful. Try it!
What a lovely and homely restaurant to eat at. Sushi with creative names and looks. The services were nice and kind. One of my favorite. Will definitely come back again. I recommend the crying roll.
The best and most affordable sushi in town! I've been to lots of sushi places and Minato is always the one I keep coming back to. The quality is equal to Willoughby's but price is much cheaper. They have lots of interesting and special sushi which is different from the normal sushi you would often get. My favorite one is Soft shell crab roll which is something that you don't usually see and you can get for under R100 which is really worthy. I also tried out their new dim sum menu the other day which is also really good! The one dish that I would want to recommend is crispy duck! A very unique dish I've had nowhere else. A must go place for all sushi lovers!
Friendly staff made it a fun dining experience. Empty but on a Wednesday night you can't expect much more. Satisfactory taste. Still pretty pricey for quality.
Minato is probably my all-time favorite sushi restaurant. I'm sure I'm one of many diehard customers. The restaurant is owned and managed by a lovely couple.
Minato uses unusual ingredients that aren't what you'd typically associate with sushi, think rocket, fig, cherry tomatoes to name a few. But everything has clearly been combined because the flavours and textures work so well. If you like simple sushi, you'll either love or hate the complexity.
Each sushi roll is 6 or 8 pieces so it's best to order a couple of dishes to share to experience the food properly.
Just so you can't say you weren't warned, the pieces can be really large. You may struggle to make it in one bite, at least not elegantly at first ;).
While everything is amazing, try the Original Special and the Rocket rolls. I'm also a big fan of the dimsum.
Was staying in a hotel just a stone's throw away from this sushi restaurant and one of the staff did recommend it to us.
It is a small little hole in the wall kind of establishment but is clean but not too well lit though. Â We popped in for a rather late lunch at around 3pm and there was one other customer in the restaurant and as soon as we sat down, he got up and left.
We ordered 3 different sushi dishes and 2 dim sum ones. Â Amongst the sushi orders, we tried their tempura sushi roll and their salmon roses. Â The tempura sushi roll is basically a "california roll" but coated with tempura batter and then deep fried. Â The 8 pieces that we had were rather large as in my experience with these "deep fried" sushi rolls tend to be. Â Taste wise wasn't too bad. Â The salmon roses were presented in a very pretty fashion, with the salmon slices spread out more like a "lily flower" fashion then the traditional round cylindrinal style, with the rice in small ball in the centre. Â Eating this is rather awkward as you can't pick up the whole "rose" even with my chopstick skills and dip it into soy to eat. Â The some of the "petals" of the rose inadvertently got left behind on the plate. Â Kudos for the presentation style though.
The dim sum dishes we had were the har gou (steamed prawn dumplings) and the chicken deep fried dumplings (gyoza). The har gou was very tasty and the prawns in it tasted fresh. Â
We might have over-ordered as our bill for 2 persons came up to close to R380 (for lunch!). Â But I think the quality of the sushi is slightly on the average sight but the dim sum did make up for the rest of the experience.
All time favourite spot for sushi! If you've been, you are aware it is almost literally a hole in the wall. You are welcomed and served by the owners lovely wife - who on occasion has a second waitron with her. The sushi is ALWAYS fresh, and super yummy. Truly a wonderful experience - you must must must have the Age Dashi and the Original Special - both dishes will not disappoint.
Minato On Long has fresh, quality sushi at a very affordable price. I particularly appreciate the buy one get one free special. The service is very good and our waitress was very helpful. I rated the atmosphere highly because it is always quite quiet there which I appreciate. Might be a bit too quiet if you went there alone though. My go to place for sushi takeaways.
A hidden gem for sure and one of the oldest sushi spots in CT. Don’t expect anything fancy, it’s simple, unpretentious and delicious. I shared a bunch of stuff here with a friend and received great service. So much so that I returned on another trip to CT. It’s well priced too. The lady running the place is really nice.

4.5 stars. Very friendly and unassuming place. Such an interesting and extensive menu. Amazing sushi and quaint decor. Great service.
Got Uber eats, good sushi. The eel nigiri said “buy 1 get 1 free” but they made it half the size. Felt ripped off. Might as well not say that and make them full size. False advertising.
The sushi is very tasty and well priced. I like that they stick to the 'traditional' way of making sushi, not drenched in sauce or deep fried. Feels healthy and clean when you eat it. Have used their website to order and deliver and it works reliably. Overall good experience.
Delicious, fresh sushi. Wouldn’t have walked in on first look, casual but excellent food
Really nice sushi spot. You would not know there is a nice Asian restaurant here because it is not on the road. Great sushi, dumplings and broths. Definitely going back.
The food is authentic Japenese cuisine. All dishes were incredibly good!
Delicious food. Super fast and friendly service. Not many tables so it feels quite cozy. The “Boat” is highly recommended.
From the moment I arrived I noticed how happy people where leaving giving thanks to the owners of this Sushi restaurant. The server was super polite, the atmosphere was a chill vibe with a sense of a warm welcome..I had 3 different orders of sushi and soup. Even if there was only one cheff the food came out on time and looked as good as it tasted. I enjoyed my time here very much. I highly recommend going anytime you need food to lift up your spirit.
I'm Very picky about my Sushi and I tried many different Sushi places during my three months in Cape Town. They were mostly varying from not so good to okay. And then I found this little hidden treasure. Best sushi I've had in a very long time, you can taste the quality of the fish in their Nigiris and they experiment with flavours without killing the concept of sushi. You can watch the chef making every piece with a lot of attention to details. On top of this it is run but the cutest me most adorable couple that are so human in their service. I'm recommending this place to every sushi lover that I meet.
Amazing atmosphere. Good food for good prices, nice lunch specials too. Highly recommend it.
Excellent sushi with some good vegan options
One of the best sushi places in CPT with generous portions and great quality at a decent price.
Lovely little place. The sushi was extremely fresh and delicious. It cost R50 for 6 pc California roll to give you a general idea of pricing. Would recommend to any sushi lover 👍
probably the most under rated sushi place in Cape Town. always great sushi!
Update Jan 2020: has since changed owners. have not given them a try as yet. curious to know myself if they are still good.
We ordered sushi for the first time from Minato through Uber Eats. Very impressed with the quality of the ingredients. Delicious sushi! I will definitely order from them again.
