Review El Burro Taqueria - Cape Town Central

Nikiwe Mayedwa
Mesmerizing views. Seats strategically arranged to ensure that every guest could indulge in the scenery while enjoying their meal. I had crispy duck taco and their fish taco 10/10 . Meat perfectly seasoned, tacos were soft and fresh. To accompany my meal I had a pineapple juice that met me with a burst of sweetness it felt like enjoying a tropical vacation in a glass 😂😂😂🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽. The service and food equally outstanding. If you’re a fan of Mexican cuisine or looking for a taste of Mexico in town , look no further this is your go to spot. Highly recommend. 🫶🏽🫶🏽

The tacos are excellent but a bit on the pricey side. It’s quite small inside and it was very busy on Saturday evening when we went. Parking is also a bit sparse. The staff are very friendly and the food was very quick to be served.

If you want really good tasty mexican food this is the spot. Service was quick, staff friendly and the restaurant created the perfect vibe with that mexican feels. Prawn taco and salmon ceviche was amazing. Had the pork and fish taco too, it was all fresh and really good!

We like to come here with friends, great openings for both vegans and omnivores =) Lately the hot chocolate has become a bit watery, but service and food stay really great. Tapas for every taste - from fruity flavors (the jackfruit option with pineapple) to spicy dishes- you won't go hungry. Your usual suspects on the drinks menu as well as some Mexican drinks. The desert options is yummy I was told. Looking forward to the next visit.
Matthew Stark
Chips and salsa are worth the trip. The tacos are amazing. Drinks always hit the spot. I think this is one of our favourite local spots. We visit usually once a month and it never disappoints. Butternut quesadilla is the sleeper of the lineup - it's so good!

Almost all of the restaurants in the neighborhood were closed at 9pm but we noticed this restaurant was open. Considering I come from the States and in a large Mexican community, I have big expectations when it comes to food claiming to be Mexican or even Tex-Mex. Despite all of that, I really liked this restaurant with what they described as Mexican-inspired tapas. Some of it definitely was different from its traditional counterpart, but it was all good nonetheless. We started with a couple of drinks, a Horchata and a Paloma. Because it was tapas style we ordered a few things - the Chile Rellenos, Steak Quesadilla, a Fish Taco, an Al Pastor Taco, the Sweet Potato Taquitos, and the Smoked Jalapeno and Corn Croquettes. The Chile Rellenos threw me a little off guard because they were small, almost bite sized, and basically only had cheese in them. The rellenos were really good though, smokey and cheesy. The tacos were also 🔥 and had a ton of flavor. The Taquitos and the Croquettes were so amazing, I think they stole the show because of how good they were! The Taquitos were different in that they were made with sweet potato but they tasted amazing! And of course the croquettes were so delicious, I mean they're corn! The restaurant itself was small but had a cute decor, a lot of the decorations and setting Mexican inspired. I really enjoyed this restaurant, the food was really good in its own right albeit not all the way authentic! I would definitely recommend this restaurant with its twist on Mexican cuisine!

Delicious, flavourful food. Always accommodating to patrons and allow add ons and substitutions to orders (I always ask for regular mozzarella in the vegan tacos). Lovely vibe and decor too!
Hannah Hudson
There are unlikely to be any other spots that have food this good. I'd say likely uncomparable! The service is alot on point, kind, and suuuuper quick! I love it when everyone is beyond nice and makes the experience even better. That is THIS place! Best tacos: fish and/or duck!
Brandon Daffue
Small Mexican place. Lovely atmosphere at night. Wish they could have a few other cocktails though (without tequila, as all the cocktails are basically margaritas) otherwise we enjoyed the nachos and tacos. The guacamole was very good. Our waitress was very helpful and kind.

El Burro literally never disappoints. BEST EVER!!

El Burro is a must go at Kloof. Great food, great service. You can just enter and get a table. Not expensive but quality is really good
Van Zyl van der Merwe
Always a great place to go. Late afternoon is my personal favourite time as the sun slowly bakes you, the food fills your soul and the margaritas calms the nerves.
Andrew Turpin
Fantastic fresh food seemingly prepared in a very authentic manner. Great taste combinations and if your looking for authentic Mexican I highly recommend it. The ceviche was fresh and tasty. The only downer is the food is plated on cheap plastic. Great friendly waitresses.
Marvin Schuster
I promised myself that I won’t throw 5 stars reviews around anymore, but this place earns it. All I want from a Mexican place! Great fresh food, creative menu, delicious margaritas and super friendly service. Keep up the good work folks!
Petri Jansen
Selection of tasty, modern Mexican cuisine, to share.
Wendy Wood
Loved the house made Limonade, staff were very helpful and friendly. Vegan Quesadillas were full of flavour with four choices.
Florian Tschurtschenthaler
Really delicious tacos and guacamole. Definitely worth to check it out
Renee La Tour
So delicious, high quality, great flavor combos & great service 👍 suggest the Chilorio Pork taco & Chili Rellenos.
Lauren Stuckenberg
The food is delicious. The venue is cool and quirky. It is small however, so the seating can be quite odd when it gets busy, which is often. I was quite literally rubbing backs with a stranger and could not properly sit on my chair, as a result of that uncomfortable situation and trying to avoid it. So I'd suggest going there outside general meal times to avoid this situation, as they do not take bookings due to the size of the venue. Great tapas selection and the food never disappoints. I must be honest, I do find it quite odd that they provide handheld drinks menus, but not food menu, considering with tapas, you order multiple different plates over time. It's definitely worth a visit though!

Friends and I visited El burro in green point on Saturday evening for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed my vegan meals. It was delicious, original and Mexican! Pity no vegan dessert though! We were also bit disappointed with the place where we were seated because there was poor air circulation but the staff happily suggested some alternatives. The best part of our dinner was the EXCELLENT service we receive from Dee, our waitress. She was friendly, helpful and sincere. Thank you for your kindness Dee! You are an asset to the restaurant.
Catherine Stevenson
Absolutely delicious vegan food! The smokey jalapeño rellenos with cashew cheese were amazing! As well as the vegan artichoke quesadilla, and very authentic frozen margarita. Good sized portion too, and great service! Will definitely be back
Cornelle Ellis
Fantastic Vegan Menu – I can't wait to come back and try the other dishes on there. My husband had the line fish off the regular menu – he was also very happy. Great vibe, delicious food! PS Would love to see a vegan dessert, please!
Ashlea Myson
Brilliant experience. Excellent food, amazing service. The calamari is insane. The pulled pork carnitas were out of this world. The smokey chilli poppers were simply the best I've ever been served. Will be back again and again and again.
Tara Looney Casimano
Really enjoyed the orange and mint margarita - nice place, food, and staff
Mandy Matthew Bird
Such delicious food...my word!! And tequila tasting very interesting...hostess great and Nic such a gentleman..well done guys you rock!! Best Mexican I've ever had
Laura Burrows
Had amazing margaritas and the starter Chiviche amazing!!!! And fish tacos. Thanks to hosts great evening out and drinks and food was great! Can highly recommend!
Lee Reeves Allen
Absolutely terrific. The food and service were impeccable. A nice gem well hidden away. Angela, the manager provided stellar service. She even got us an Uber with a failed phone and stayed with us until it arrived.
Emma Brunette
My absolute favourite! Excellent food and on top of it all, environmentally responsible - no straws here! Please open your Newlands restaurant on Saturdays and Sunday's! I am always so disappointed when I can't satisfy my Sunday lunch Mexican craving!
Vicki Mac Callum
Went there this afternoon for the chicken quesadilla that we have been craving for a month. We walked in and seated ourselves - there wasn't anyone around. Then a waitress came to the table and I asked if they have The Entertainer app (just out of interest) to which she thought I was talking about a drink and responded eventually that they don't have it, or wifi and added "we don't have anything" which rung true a few minutes later. We ordered two castle lite draughts and two chicken quesadilla (at R115 I might add) and she came back to tell us they have neither of them. On a Friday afternoon and a public holiday. We then left and came to Buena Vista where we were so welcomed and served two beers extremely quickly since we were now at the point of being parched. We also managed to get two chicken quesadillas and starters for the same amount as El Burro would have charged for one quesadilla. Such a difference. Bad bad experience on the one hand - and 5 star on the other (without us saying what had happened at El Burro)
Lindiwe Ndiwe Livo Sakayi
It was my 1st experience there, thanks to a friend of mine that suggested the place. I enjoyed the Chunky Guacamole and Tortilla chips as starter and Steak Quesadilla. Thanks to the friendly ladies who served us ,pity they didn't have name tags.
Roar Kvamme
Aaaaaaaamaaaazing. Great food. Great staff. Great drinks. Great speed. Looooved it. Come to Norway
Megan Combrink
Really great vibe, food (especially the traditional mexican dish) and service! Loved it, something totally different. We willl be back!
Robyn Leigh Tobin
Had my birthday dinner there last Friday - food, drinks, ambience and service was excellent! Highly recommend. Can't wait for the one in Newlands to open
Kate Wade-Lehman
Cocktails are great & very well priced. Do yourself a favour & order the chocolate fondant for dessert. Probably the best I've had in Cape Town!!
Mary Illingworth Banks
Had an AWESOME lunch there today. Love the vegan menu. Great service from Emily. It was my third visit ( twice in Green Point and once in Newlands).
Antoinette Tossie Brill
We visited El Burros in Green Point on Saturday night and just loved the Mexican food experience and friendly ambiance of the place. The service was excellent. We will definitely be back.
Ann-Christine Baetge
I went to El Burro on Friday evening. However, myself and my boyfriend were very disappointed especially because what we experienced did not match the great rankings. The food was beyond average and lukewarm. The Tacos were soggy and my boyfriend's meal was so terrible that he only had two bites and took the rest as takeaway,to give to the car guard later. It's a pity since the ambiance is really nice and cozy. The waitress was friendly, however, she did not ask if we wanted another drink or even bothered to take away the empty glasses. We will definitely not be back.
Michael DieTweede Bredenhann
The service was great, the drinks yummy, the main meals everything I hoped it would be and the dessert moorish (I could have eaten 2 portions). I will be back soon, that is for sure.
Francoise Hannah Phillips
My favourite little Mexican restaurant. I love their grilled fish tacos and house margaritas. So sad to see they no longer have the duck tacos or single tacos on the menu. El Burro Taqueria is my happy place.
Sam
For years I have loved the El Burro Greenpoint more than this branch but I have to say my opinion has changed. The tapas style of this menu allows you to try a great number of dishes plus they are light so you won’t feel lethargic after eating here.

Would highly recommend you visit on a Sunday to take advantage of the delicious R25 mimosas. Make sure to try one of their margaritas, I love the orange & mint one.

We had the nachos with guacamole (proper quality avocados were used), deliciously hot rellenos, duck taco, wild mushroom quesadilla, grilled chicken taco and cauliflower and chickpea taco.

We enjoyed all the dishes although we were a bit sad that the fish taco was out of stock.

There is a great variety of vegan options as well.

Churros was the perfect way to end the meal. Highly recommend.
Yurisha Naidoo
We ordered two quesadillas via UberEats but received two of the tiniest tacos I’ve ever seen. Contacted the restaurant and our feedback and request for a change to the order was completely dismissed and we were basically told to just accept it. Would not recommend!
Monique Gibson
A cosy corner of Churro Cheerfulness. We absolutely loved the quinoa salad, a variety of tacos and of course ...the churros! Not a value for money meal as you'll want to sample a few different items on the menu, but worth the cost for the flavours, fantastic neighborhood atmosphere and friendly service.
Suraj Singh
El Burro Taqueria is the smaller sibling of El Burro Greenpoint and EL Burro Newlands. The Taqueria specialises in single serving mexican cuisine. We have a range of small plates from Ceviche, Chille Rellenos and Salads to Tacos , Quesadillas and of course Churros and Paletas.
Nicholas_Jon_D
So yummy and I adore El Burro. I do however feel that the menu is slightly limited, even though it’s a Taqueria, it really could have a few more options.
Janita Naidoo
*This review is for Greenpoint. However, I have already reviewed the restaurant and I do not want to edit or delete it* most recent experience explained below:

Came here for a friends birthday dinner (large group of around 18) and we were seated promptly by the waitress at the door.

Was pleasantly surprised by their updated menu although slightly disappointed that there were no nacho options. I can’t remember if this was ever an offering here.

Ordered taquitos & chips and guacamole to start. Food came extremely quickly, suspiciously so, considering the restaurant was packed. The taquitos (filled with sweet potato and feta) tasted of pure (old) oil, the only thing that saved this dish was the slaw it was served with. Felt considerably nauseous after eating this. Guacamole was a decent portion, not like the “diet” version you get at other places, however the chips were a letdown. They were super frail and kept flaking/breaking when trying to scoop up guac, def something that needs to be reassessed.

Shared the line fish “build your own” tacos. All toppings (pink pickled onion, sour cream, guac, pico) come served on the side in small bowls. Corn tacos were served in a circular warmer and fish was lightly battered and fried, served with mixed beans on the side and a refreshing slaw. This was AMAZING! The fish was well seasoned and the batter was light but still crunchy.

The tamarind margarita was really different, had me taking sip after sip to try and place the flavour. The other cocktail had tequila, ginger ale and peach juice. This was not the greatest and tasted very strange.

Our waitress was attentive and friendly, a complete 180 from our previous visit. Again, the menu is not what you might think of when you think “Mexican” food but it is authentic and flavorful. The chocolate fondant dessert is still decadently chocolatey and delicious

I'm very happy to have found this place. they serve excellent soft shell tacos. the prawn was we've excellent. The beef and pork was very spicy, which I enjoyed. We had a margarita which wasn't the best though.
Daniel Human
Lovely food, lovely people, lovely time. Had excellent quesadillas and a few tequila cocktails. Very nice ambiance and very good food. Love it.
Aletha Jeftha
Yaaaaaasssss! These tacos are life! And when you hear a bunch of Latin accents and Spanish being spoken in the restaurant, then you just know that you're about to be served something close to the real deal.

Ordered the spicy pork and fried fish tacos, so so good! All served on flour tortillas, packed with all the right flavours. Also had the steak quesadilla, which was equally as yum. Ended off the meal with delicious churros!

The portions are 'tapas' style, so would recommend ordering at least 3 items per person.

Looking forward to returning.
Chantelle
Everything from the corn to the crackling is amazing in this place. These guys really know how to make food. They staff are always great and it is always a pleasure to dine here.

They get all the thumbs up.
Anja Immelman
This vibey little spot is a must. Who doesn’t like them some nice tacos?? 🌮🌮

Quaint set up with coloful chairs and small tables overlooking the corner street.

A tapa styled menu will ensure you order at least 3/4 plates between 2 people. Service is on point and the food is reasonable priced. We ordered 4 dishes and a bottle of wine. R330 for 2 people is not too bad!
Adrian Engelbrecht
If overcooked, tasteless, pricey veg tacos are you thing this place suits
Apathetic, listless service @ around 6 pm
I suppose miracles do happen(average 4,5 rating) but not when we were there
Kaitlyn Williams
Situated on a bustling corner, this place is small but packed with energy! What a pleasant atmosphere to be in. Food is delicious, although portions are a bit small. My best friend and I ordered a variety of tacos and nachos with a bean dip. To finish off the night we had churros which were super yum!
Kposselwhite
At the moment this is hands down my favorite restaurant in Cape Town. The food, the vibe, the buy two get the third free special, the drinks - all to die for. Also, the Mexican food is so authentic- not some crappy Tex mex place. I wish I could eat here everyday. The fish taco, the duck taco - or the "ducko" as I like to call it, and the mushroom taco are my favourites
Cherie Thomson
My boyfriend and I visited on a Thursday evening and the vibe was awesome/busy. They don't take reservations but are very accommodating and are happy to find a place for you where they can. The service was super efficient, drinks well priced and the food was good value for money. I ordered the nachos and salsa and refried beans dip and ceviche and I would highly recommend these dishes👌🏻 I have since been back and ordered the ceviche and prawn taco but would rate the ceviche as my favourite! Will definitely keep going back.
Jaryd Kay
The gauc is the best out there. The drinks are exciting and delicious and plenty legit Mexican drinks to enjoy. The menu is small but appetizing. If you don't like spicy food however, it becomes a bit of a small menu. In any case, everything we tried was delicious. Just don't go there hungry unless you're willing to spend.
TK Boulais
We had four tacos- Fish, Prawn, Pork and garlic, and Steak. The steak and prawn were our favorites. Really delicious. The fish taco had too much white sauce. I had the regular Margarita. It was good but next time I'd try one of their other cocktails. There are only a few comfy booths and they fill up quick so get there early if that matters to you.
Morgan
Always good service. Great menu. Caters well for veggie vs non-veggie. Flavorsome. Good drinks - warning - the tequila based drinks are quite strong but still delicious. Ceviche is the best in the city. Good vibe / energy. Try get their early to get a good table.
Susan Searle
Ok don't mess around!! You HAVE to go here and have to have
The crispy pork skin
The ceviche
The fish taco
The beef-steak taco

In that order!
Chad Rutter
This place ticks all the boxes for me! Took my gf here for a bday dinner, she doesn't drink tequila but we tried the cocktails anyway and they were great! It was our first time here and our waitress Chloe was superb, the tacos were amazingly delicious - the chilli pork was so yummy besides it's spicyness, but our favorite was the fish! We could eat tons of those little pieces of heaven! We ended off with churros which were yummy! Had a great night here and would def visit more 10/10 would recommend :)
Ruby Bunjun
Food was excellent. I had the fish tacos and they were just amazing. The churros were also some of the best in have ever had. We went as part of a group and everyone was happy with their order. 10/10 would recommend
Kyla Meyerson
El Burro Taqueria is just fabulous! The fish tacos take me to my happy place. The decor is happy but not over the top. The atmosphere is such a nice, chilled vibe at lunch time and very festive in the evening.
Nicola
My boyfriend and I saw the restuarant as we walked past and decided to give it a go. We didn't realised it was tapas and not being really strong followers of tapas; we still stayed. And boy... are we glad we did! Their quesadillas and tacos are superb! We tried and tested their vegetarian, wild mushroom and vegan options and order another round. Also friendly and knowledgeable staff which is an added plus.
Catalina Guzmán
Lovely space. Very open and colorful. The food was good but definitely not spicy (at least not if you're from Latin America). The margaritas were awesome.
MattJBlack3
Chicken, beef and fish tacos for lunch..incredible food, almost nothing to separate the three! Great service and a really nice spot. Definitely try the Churros for dessert too!
Sereshan Pillay
Met up with some friends for a casual dinner. I have yet to try El Burro in Greenpoint and due to being fully booked, opted for El burro taqueria. Tapa style Mexican food with a variety of quesadillas and tacos. Food was good, but perhaps slightly underwhelming. Ideal for drinks and snacks, as opposed to dinner.
Guy Blackhurst
One of my favourite everyday spots for a light dinner and a drink. Located opposite the popular pub, The Power and the Glory, it's a great spot to unwind and do some people watching after a long day. The pork scratchings are addictive, especially with a glass or two of white wine. The tapas-style tacos and quesadillas are equally as addictive, especially the fish taco's. Fortunately everything is very reasonably priced so you can get away with trying a number of things on the menu. The service is always friendly and attentive. If you've got a craving for toned-down Mexican cuisine, this is the place for you.
Danieljake
Trendy, vibrant little Mexican restaurant on the corner. Friendly staff and the churros are fantastic. Definitely worth checking out.

I recently tried the chilli poppers which were some of the best I've had in Cape Town.

All the food here is tapas sized so I ordered the steak quesadilla as well which was fantastic.
Roxie Collingwood
Stay at home mum, got a rare night out with my girlies and we decided to meet at El Burro. We love mexican.

The tables and chairs are incredibly uncomfortable and made for a kiddies play school. When I begged to be moved to a booth because I was in physical pain from sitting - the waitress told me - that they dont want people to actually sit down for an evening - that it was more of an eat on-the-go restaurant!!! On a friday night!!!

The food came and it was average and bite size at premium price.

If you want a fun mexican vibe - head to fat cactus off kloof
Julia Louise Domanski
My Capetonian friend brought me here for dinner and it was absolutely awesome! I love Mexican food and this is the real deal.
The portions are almost tapas-sized which is great because you can order lots of different things and taste a bit of everything.
The nachos with salsa and cheese-stuffed jalapeño peppers were delicious starters. Tacos come in portions of single tacos and my favourites were the chorizo special and the chicken. My friend's vegetarian tacos were also very good.
The absolute cherry on top were the churros with chocolate sauce - not to be missed.
Rachel Myra
Small tasty tapas type food, best to order a variety and mix it up. Great location although parking can be a bit of a mare. Their fish taco is a must!
Sumendra Chetty
Been wanting to try this little restaurant out for so long and finally got the chance to! We had the Mexican mule and pineapple margarita - deliciousness! The chicken quesadilla and the wild mushroom quesadilla were fantastic and just the right amount! Was disappointed with the service though- our little order took a while and the waitress was not friendly or attentive. But great food and great cocktails and a fantastic area! The decor is amazing as well :)
Mikaela
Being a huge fan of El Burro, I went to El Burro Taqueria with high expectations and I was not disappointed!

Inside the Taqueria it is small and cosy, with friendly waiters and a fun atmosphere. While many items on the menu are the same as those at El Burro, the flavour of the food itself is very different which gives this restaurant it's own unique edge. The portions are small and well-priced. The Taqueria does not have a liquor license yet, but they do let you bring in your own drinks. Definitely put this one down on your list! (And make sure you stay for the churros)
Pieter Strydom
Great service-very friendly. We were a table of 6. Loads of different drinks and tapas on the table at any point in time, all tasty, totally my scene. Ceviche was good. Churros for dessert- ooh ja! Easy going alternative to the institution in green point.Go for a chilled night out.
Juante Wall
I had a wonderful evening at El Burro Taqueria a while back. I love the decor and the relaxed feeling and I love the food even more. We started with nachos for the table which were so yum that we had to order more! We then moved onto the tacos. I tasted quite a few and loved them all. The chicken and avo was a firm favourite as was the butternut quesadilla. We ended off the evening with some churros. Not the best I have had but they were still yummy. Overall a fantastic evening.
Imtiyaaz Hart
Awesome!!!!

1. Food: full of flavor!

2. Value for money!

3. Friendly staff.

4. Did i mention the food was awesome? Yeah... I did... Coz it was!!!

Worth a visit and many returns!!
Brad Dubbelman
Awesome informal little spot with a good vibe. The fish tacos are a win and the overall food is generally good while being a little on the pricey side. Don't bother with the margaritas - way too strong and way too sweet.
Collin Allin
Great vibe and great food, mostly do Tacos and u order single portions around R35 each , so make sure you watch that or turns into expensive meal.. Also no Liquor license but you are allowed to bring your own booze at no charge which is good.. Service was friendly and good.. Definitely worth a visit
Liza
If this place was in pretoria I would have had shares...a lot of shares!! My tastebuds went gezooola!!!! The different flavours are devine and you have to try as much as you can from the menu; portions are small enough to do that. Fairly priced no problem there. Service excellent! They serve alcohol now so you can have that shiraz. Only problem? This little piece of mexico heaven is in Cape Town... Not pretoria. But I WILL be back!!!!!
The Cape Town Glutton
We are completely obsessed with the vibe on Kloof street and could not be happier that El Burro is now adding to the awesome atmosphere. With their authentic food and laid back buzzing atmosphere of their corner shop, they really have a winning combination! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here! We especially loved their churros and of course that they stock one of our favourite frozen treats Las Paletas!
Gabriel Stein
El burro taqueria summed up in one sentence: Super tasty (expensive) food, not much variety or size.

Awesome service, the staff are really friendly and great. Currently there is no liquor license but you can bring your own bottle of wine which is cool, they have glasses for you. They do however serve Margheritas.

The tacos and quesadillas are really tasty but lack size, I had 3 of each and still wasn't full (DISCLAIMER: I'M AN ANIMAL), they're also pretty pricey. The most unfortunate thing about this place is that they're a Mexican restaurant with a pretty lame nacho game, the salsa was tasteless. Also, a cheesy nachos option would be great.

Come here if you don't mind paying out your bum for great tasting food, also it has an awesome vibe of you come with friends.
Lorelei Kruger
Our first experience at El Burro was an absolute delight. Warmly greeted by our waitress who had good knowledge of the food. All food was incredibly reasonably priced (our bill came to R270 for starters, mains, dessert and a cocktail!). All the food was tasty and authentic Mexican. Each bite was lip smackingly good! But, do not go for the Nacho's- basically just plain nachos and a salsa that resembles a pasta sauce. Special mention to the Churros, totally better than can be expected. Genuinely impressed with the food which was delicious and service was quick!
Nic Hern
Lovely little restaurant opposite rafiki's! The tacos were delicious but my favorite was the chicken quesadilla which were absolutely to die for👌🏻 The restaurant itself has a very cool vibe and is done up really well! I will definitely be back🙌🏻
Ben Rhys
This place has been open since June 2015, they're right in the middle of the hipster shitpacking district, and they're unlicensed. Initially I'd thought "wow, these guys must be goddamned incredible if they've managed to survive without booze," but that's because I'm unaware; the real reason is that they're clearly losing money, but they're owned by the same bros who own the Mini Royale next door, and the regular El Burro in Green Point, and the regular Royale on Long. It's like a miniature boutique fast food empire.

Don't sweat it re the not being licensed bit, mind you, there's a liquor place just up the road. Also these guys make really nice vegan tacos, which feels like it should be a joke and yet.
Max Hayes
Incredibly busy, but it has so many redeeming features that you don't even notice. Friendly, spritely staff. The food is easy to love, and is still somehow relatively cheap. I think that the idea is that you spend 2 or more hours there, slowly munching (service is quick, i mean many lil courses), so it is important to remember that who you go with will make or break your evening. Basically it is the perfect place to be trapped, chowing tasty lil treats with people that you love
Zaakiyah
Love anything Mexican, but this was one of those disappointing experiences in terms of taste. There seemed to be nothing to excite your taste buds , no flavor just bland and boring.

The venue and locations is perfect and ambience was key! Loved the waitress outfits , they where way to cute.

Everything in terms of the food was simple. A great place to catch a snack and relax. After having your meal , it is great to end off with some ice cream that was probably the best even though it was not made by the El Burro team otherwise it's such a great place to stop over for a late evening snack!!!
MaccTuyyna
Amazing American style Mexican, I'd say closest to Texmex. Absolutely delicious... Try the ceviche, fish taco, chorizo breakfast taco... Only the pulled pork was a tiny bit oily but still amazing.
Kate Stewart
What an amazing place! Loved the flavours, the vibe, the decor and the service. Was a lovely night and I'll definitely be back again. Keep an eye out for the Wild Mushroom Quesadillas...stunning!
Tabitha Guy
The decor is lovely, although the stools to sit on do not look very inviting, but if you're lucky enough to get a booth seat then you're comfy. Sticking true to the El Burro theme; the colours, outfits and music are great. The menu is a little confusing and limited, but I can highly recommend the Fried Fish Tacos, by far my favourite.
Shannon Van Wyk
Everything about this place is lovely, from the decor to the food and the service. The churros are 💯 I'll definitely be heading back soon.
Craig Calverley
Great Mexican food. fast and efficient service and great tasty food. Nice small portions so you can taste a variety of what they serve. good Margherita - the pork was to die for. Definitely will be back.
Kirsty Donald
I love the vibe of this El Burro taco bar! It is awesomely decorated and the small menu really hits all the spots you want from a taco joint. The chilorio pork taco and the veggie quesadilla are ones you must try! The churro are also top notch. I look forward to coming back.
Tabassum Smiley Aleem
My friend and i popped into el burro and i wasnt really that impressed. I love the colours of the decor. We ordered nachos and my idea of nachos is cheesy with guacamole. Their idea is more traditional which was like chips with a dip. I had a butternet and feta taco which was actualy pretty good. They dont have a liquor licence so we were told we could go opposite the road to Rafikis which disappointed my friemd greatly. Uhm okay. The chilli hot choclate was good
Claire Shaban
Interesting experience. Authentic Mexican dishes, nachos do not appear on the menu. I had the enchiladas and a side of chilli. If you love chilli, go get the chilli from here. Tasty and hot. Good range of tequila.
Alan Jan Meyer
Great place with a great atmosphere! The food is authentic and packed with flavor! Staff were great and service was great, def recommend this one to anyone who likes their food a little more interesting!
Nastassja Toll
Awesome little taco restaurant and really great lunch spot. Small potions so you might need to order several options to make a meal....but this is a great way to try the whole menu :) Bright, colourful and really friendly staff. Great service ;)

Mexican food is such a win. The portions here are small but the flavours are big! It's quite nice that you can bring your own drinks in but don't expect massive El Burro portions. I like how open the place looks with the huge in street windows and view into the street.
Bring your bae on a date here.
No lemur poo coffee served. X

We arrived at El Burro Taqueria excited for a great dinner surrounded by a buzzing atmosphere. And we were not let down! El Burro Taqueria is a small Mexican restaurant with big flavors. The tapas style menu is packed with fresh ingredients and is not overpowered by heavy cream, oil and cheese. The waiters seem happy to be serving people and were very attentive to our table. The atmosphere is constantly buzzing with laughter and life. El Burro Taqueria is a great restaurant for an exciting Friday night. Leila Eshraghi

Nice and intimate little spot and well located opposite Power & the Glory. The portions are quite small and even though it seems well priced you will need at least 4 portions to make a decent meal. Service is very quick and would rather recommend this spot for a late lunch. The chilorio pork taco and the vegetarian quesadilla was probably my favorite.

Delicious, more traditional Mexican food. Small portions, well priced, for a good mix and match kind of meal, nice for variety and taste testing tummies. Currently they don't have liquor licence but they let you bring your own drinks. The selection of drinks on their menu looks standard for Mexican eateries and fitting with their food menu.

Chilled and cosy atmosphere although they intend to have a high turnout of tables so not a place to enjoy a meal and linger - for that make use of their Somerset Road Eatery, I guess.

We went there this past weekend, we ordered the beef, chicken and pork tacos and the beef quesadilla and it was delicious! But, what stole the night were the delicious churros, they were amazing, I would trade my fist born for them... And the chocolate sauce that went with them was perfect, not too sweet so it balanced well. The staff were also very friendly and helpful :)

A simpler & quick version of El Burro.

Nacho's and salsa as a starter - would have liked some avo salsa with them.

Taco's - chicken, fish and steak all yummy!
What a lovely spot! Went for a girls dinner and everyone left very satisfied. Quite small and they don't take bookings so get there early.

The portions are more starter size so I would recommend at least 2 portions! The nachos don't offer much - it's just a basket of chips with a salsa dip but fine to snack on whilst deciding on what to have.

The chilorio pork taco and the beef taco were delicious -- and I have it on good authority that the quesadillas are worth it too! The staff are friendly and more than happy to recommend dishes!

They don't have a liquor license yet, so being a bottle of wine and some good company and you'll no doubt have a lovely evening.

Popped in on a Friday after work and it was relatively empty and we managed to get a table near the window. The waitresses were efficient and friendly. We tried the fish, chilorio pork and beef tacos and all of them were absolutely delicious. I also tried a steak quesadilla which was my favourite out of the bunch. The nachos could do with some gaucamole in my humble opinion. This place is the real deal, none of that oily tex mex we usually find around cape town. I loved it and would definitely recommend it

Upon biting into one of El Burro Taqueria's tacos you are immediately spellbound by the taste of the soft taco shell - a corn flavour that wraps around and complements their succulent fillings.

Mitch Prinsloo and I begin with the chicken taco (pictured) - a smoky, garlicky experience. I try the vegetarian quesadilla - never have I had such flavourful butternut at a restaurant, and it was complemented perfectly by the goats cheese.

One taco, one quesadilla down and our bellies are still rumbling. We opt for the chilorio pork and the fish tacos.

Our food audibly sizzling in the kitchen behind us, we glance around the restaurant. Decor is deconstructed, candy coloured Mexican; a change from the tendency towards cheesy decor in other Mexican spots.

The pork has a good spice to it, but I wouldn't have a second because it lacks a freshness that the other dishes offer.

We leave the fish tacos for last. Teeth sinking into taco and a smokey, limey favour bomb is released in our mouths. Definitely deserves a recommend.
So tonight I got to experience El Burro Taqueria and I'm so happy to have finally done so. It was packed and the vibe was amazing. The waitresses were busy but friendly and we could have a few good laughs with them. And despite being so busy we didn't have to wait all too long for our food. We ordered a few rounds of quesadillas and tacos, and I particularly enjoyed the pork tacos. And then we all enjoyed some churros for dessert, served with the most amazing chocolate sauce. Fantastic! Utterly enjoyed the evening there and will definitely be back!

LOVE this little gem. Popped by yesterday, unplanned, which is fine as they don't take bookings anyway. Looks like a Mexican diner, small but the decor is fabulous. Serves individual dishes, much like a food truck would, but the food is AMAZING. Super authentic Mexican dishes. No liquor licence yet but you can bring your own booze. Excellent for sharing, dishes are about R30 each on average, so order a few things to try. Rellenos are my favourite (smoky, un-battered, better versions of 'chilli poppers'.) Oh, and they have salted pork crackling sticks. 'Nuf said. 5 Star status for me.

Wow, love this place. Style and decor is fresh and uplifting. Great colour on the wall. Delicious food, I love the way they do their chili poppers. Batter free and super healthy, or at least that's the way their smoked option feels like to me. I had the fish taco. I am drooling again just thinking about it. It's about 3 mouthfuls, so make sure you buy a second. I also tried the steak quesadilla which was nice and spicy. Had a good little kick to it. They don't have their liquor license yet, but the plus side of that is you can BYOB and they don't charge corkage at the mo as a result. I am doing #SoberSeptember so the no booze didn't phase me...at least this month 😝. We popped in after work to beat the traffic so we got seated straight away which was rad. I will be back, and I definitely want to try that burger place right next door (same owners I believe). Awesome!

Vibrant, colourful and each plate served is sure to carry an absolute flavour bomb. The ingredients are fresh and authentic, while the dishes themselves are superbly nuanced and manage to bring their full flavour profiles to the fore. The portion sizes are fairly limited, but this great take on the Mexican 'fast food' concept is worth the cost - even more so if you are sharing with friends. The Fish Fried Taco is a must!

Popped in for a quick bite after work. Darted across the road to the bottle store to pick up a bottle of vino as the venue doesn't have a liquor license yet. Started off with the nachos and the corn dish, which were both good. Then ordered 2 cholorio pork tacos and a steak enchilada. Food was served quickly and fresh, enjoyed it all quite a bit! Will definitely be back!
Im probably a bit biased as the regular El Burro's biggest fan, but the baby brother of my favourite doesnt disappoint! I love that I can have a little bit of everything. And everything is spectacular! The ceviche is everything everyone says it is and no meal is concluded without a churro! We took our own wine while they wait for their liquor licence. Essentially a frozen margarita is all this meal needed to get a perfect score.
Kev
Had the chicken, fish , veggie tacos. Also had the Chilli rellenos. Recommend the chicken tacos. Nice concept, felt the Mexican vibe. Hola!!!

This lovely little place in the heart of Kloof Nek is perfect for the indecisive, or those who find themselves constantly wanting everything on the menu. Bits and bobs type of eating at its best! And the decor... Wow!

I recommend:
Fish taco 😍
Chilorio pork
Veg quesadilla

(But tried EVERYTHING on the menu and nothing disappoints.

Completely lived up to my expectations - Food comes out quickly, it's delicious and there's a great vibe.

Highly recommend: fish tacos and the corn off the cob

So good! The ceviche was fantastic and I loved all the tacos, especially the spicy chillorio pork. The space is small but didn't feel over crowded. I will be back for sure!

Hot damn, this place lives up to its reputation. The food is fresh and unbelievably tasty - I had the fish taco (soooo good) and vegetarian quesadilla (my favourite!). We also ordered a portion of nachos and salsa to share, and the corn chips were super tasty. And yes, we had churros for dessert - worth every calorie!
Norman Buller
Great little spot - essentially Mexican tapas. Good vibe and great design and ambiance. The food was fantastic. Not licensed yet so had to run across the road to buy a bottle of wine. We will be back.

This is the new kid on the Tamboerskloof block and it's fabulous. Owned by the El Burro team the offering is my kind of food - small tapas type dishes so great to mix it up and share food with your date/ friends. NB They're still waiting on their liquor license.
Bianca Lee Coleman
El Burro's new venture in the city bowl - delicious Mexican fast food you can eat with one hand, leaving the other free for a glass of vino. No liquor license yet so take your own. There is a bottle store across the road. Ceviche is divine.

Affordable. Friendly. & vibey. Visiting this restaurant during their opening weekend I was pleasantly surprised by their fantastic service and affordable Mexican dishes. I highly recommend their pork and beef tacos. It's probably best to get a couple of things to share. I will definitely be back for more soon :)

I am so delighted to have Cape Town's best Mexican restaurant on my doorstep! El burro has out done itself with its Taqueria.

The smaller restaurant serves taco tappas style dishes. We started off with a basket of Nachos that were served just with salsa (as opposed to cheese and guacamole) and pork scratchings serves with salt and lime (a must try) we went on to have the beef, fish, chili pork and vegetable tacos about two each were enough. These were all washed down with glorious margaritas and we ended off our meal with churros!

If you can't get a booking simply put your name down with the manager and Pop over to The Power and The Glory for a pre-dinner drink.

This was a bit of a disappointment. I guess my hopes were too high...living up the road @jacquesuys and Jaenadams and i decided to check out the new joint. Being and avid lover of mexican food and a value for money freak i was disappointed in the price in relation to the portion size and presentation (plastic kindergarden picnic plates). The attached pic if of a taco which was meant to be a quesadilla (the waiter insisted it was a quesadilla) trust me i know what a quesadilla is. ...so the waitrons are fresh but the atmosphere is chilled and vibey.
Jaenadams
Would have liked a menu, seen that A waitress is taking my order and I don't have to order at the counter. Sat with my back towards the menu board and it kind of hurt my neck having to turn around and decide what to order. The tacos were decent. Quesadillas looked just like a taco, no it was a taco! That was not a quesadilla. The decor is pretty, plastic plates made me feel like I'm back in kindergarten.

Although the portions are small, the tacos are very tasty. I would suggest going with a group and ordering different dishes to share. The churros were especially delicious, but quite overpriced.
Foodhunter
Really great ambiance- cosy with candles. The food was delicious- the vegetarian taco was way too hot to eat. However, as soon as we said something we were offered something else straight away. The service was really great! No liquor license yet so bring your own wine. Still new so thing once it's had time to wear in it will be amazing.
GideonC
Finding parking is a bit of a nightmare - but the food, service and ambience makes it worth the hassle. They are still awaiting approval of their liquor license - but don't let that stop you! Go!
Adrian
Killer little gem! About time ct got introduced to some quality quick service Mexican! Pork and fish tacos are winners - and if you into ceviche, it's on point

Think about El Burro Taqueria as El Burro's baby sister. It's literally the dynamite version of cape town's best Mexican joint . A small focused menu that allows you to enjoy lots of different delicious things on the menu but keeps the flavoursome integrity of El Burro. I basically tried most of the tacos save for the chicken , for me the fish taco was the best on the menu followed by the steak taco. As always however the winner was the angelfish ceviche. Such a gorgeous little spot ! Best Mexican spot in SA❤️

Friends and I pulled in to this restaurant mid-afternoon on Saturday and we had to pull ourselves away late evening. The staff were very happy and knew their menu well, they responded well to our jovial spirits!

We had the ceviche which was delicious and then moved on to their tacos, chilli poppers and nachos. Well I wouldn't necessarily recomend the nachos, everything else was 5/5 - those chilli poppers have yet to be beaten.

Well done to the management to creating that typical comfortable and easy atmosphere el burro is so famous for in a great corner of town! i have no doubt this will become a regular spot for my friends and I to frequent!

This El Burro has a fresh take on how you approach your decision making when it comes to ordering your food. It is convenient for anyone wanting to try various things yet can't decide. Each item is individually portioned so you can mix match your own perfect combination of Taco and quesadilla etc. There is an awesome selection to work through & there is a nice drinks menu for the perfect pint to pair with your choice of combo portions, cause you know you want more then one Taco. Definitely recommend making a stop off.
