Review Charly's Bakery - Cape Town Central

Devon Tangocci
I organized a bachelorette party with Charlie’s Bakery. 10/10 the cookies were absolutely delicious and the woman absolutely were in love. I can highly recommend Charlie’s Bakery the food is incredible and their customization on the cookies such as “I do”, “getting hitched” was sublime. Thank you for excellent service

I do love visiting Charlys Bakery, and their muffins are still just the absolute best. I was at the store on a Friday morning on this occasion and I was surprised at how little stock there was. I do remember the store as much bussier but I shall be back. With delights this tasty the memory lingers on.

It feels like a fairytale filled with beautiful colours and fun cupcake designs. Children and even adults would love to receive a cake or cookie from Charlies Bakery. They are a bit expensive but totally worth the treat. There are savory options for the not-so-sweet tooth. It is still delicious, the presentation thereof is just not their speciality

My family have been using Charly's Bakery for most of our families birthday cakes and they have never disappointed. As a vegan it is such a treat to be able to get a delicious and beautiful cake that I can share with all my loved ones. This year we got the vegan vanilla pound cake that was heavenly, everyone got a slice and even the non vegans went in for seconds. Always a treat to have a cake from Charly's Bakery. The team is very communicative and kind. I would 100% recommend if you are looking for a customised cake that is as delicious as it is beautiful to place your trust in Charly's Bakery.

I was really impressed with the professionalism, rapidity and efficiency of your services. I ordered my son’s cake all the way from Switzerland 🇨🇭and you complied to my every wish. Forever grateful for helping me make a timely surprise for my sons 17th Birthday

unbelievable service from ordering to delivery for my daughter's birfday. Cup cakes were the best my daughter tasted.

Absolutely phenomenal cake! Beautifully made with such an epic, custom design exactly what we wanted and to top it off it was delicious 🎂 Walked into the venue and when people saw how spectacular the cake looked they immediately asked if it was from Charly’s Bakery 🧁

What an amazing experience, I have ordered two cakes from Charly's Bakery recently - both for special occasion's. Brilliant customer service, the cakes were phenomenal ( both in appearance and taste) and delivered to the door for a small extra fee. Highly recommend

We have been ordering from Charlys Bakery for the last 10 years. They have delivered on creativity and taste and are always willing to listen and make the customer happy and give the customer the best result possible. We attempted their carrot Extravaganza Cake with chocolate ganache inside and white chocolate buttercream outside which was fantastic! Our favourite is their petit fours which is a staple constant yearly! Thank you for being part of our celebrations and journey! We appreciate all of you and all of the staff!

A story totally worth sharing with friends! On my girlfriend's birthday, they went above and beyond to make sure a personalized cake was delivered to her, even with their crazy schedule. Even though I was in Italy at the time, they provided awesome assistance through WhatsApp. I got to share all the details, including a quick sketch I made. They even took the time to enhance it and showed me a preview of how my request might look. The cake was delivered and my girlfriend was over the moon! I really loved how the team added a little extra flair to the delivery, so many laughs and good vibes! They absolutely nailed it! And you know what the best part is? They played an important role in creating a core memory that will be treasured forever! Thanks a bunch, everyone, and Thomas, you're an awesome friend! I owe you a drink when I swing by!

I'm based in Lisbon and wanted to spoil my mom with something delightful on her birthday. I ordered the most gorgeous cupcakes that according to my family were "mouthwatering!!"🎉💕 Big shout out to the team especially Chenai who was amazing in putting the order together, sending me pics of the cupcakes and arranging everything else including the delivery from the bakery to my mom in Cape-Town. Amazing service and can’t wait to visit in person over my December holiday. Bravo Charly’s Bakery!! 🥰

Superb first time experience. Had the chocolate fudge brownie and it was super yummy, moist and fresh. The carrot cupcake was tasty. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Loved the creativity and the cookies were delicious.

The taste of the birthday cake I ordered was absolutely amazing. I ordered vanilla pound and red velvet and the taste of both was out of this world. The cake was the Safari one, and it was decorated as precisely as the pictures. What I ordered was 100% what I got. The customer service was also out of this world. At no point did I feel anxious about my needs being met. In fact I was constantly reassured. What a pleasure it was.

Amazing cake with beautiful designs. A bit crowded in the small shop. Tables a little too close together. If you're looking for a creative purely Cape Town cake shop then this is the place to go.

It was my first time ordering from Charly’s bakery, and it was the best experience yet! I ordered very last minute and they made the cake in one day, Such lovely people! Will defo recommend and order again! Thank you so much, you're wonderful!! The cake looks fantastic!

Honestly just visited this cute bakery to have the classic picture taken by their wall.
Their location is a little on the dodgy side and the shop was much smaller than expected, nonetheless we were greeted with friendly staff and the most adorable bakes and cakes.
Would not go back again, but I am glad I got to tick this bakery of my bucket list.
Aletha Jeftha
Once upon a time this used to be thee place to order a special occasion cake. Alas, this no longer is the case.

Company ordered a chocolate cake. It was not bad, but not great either. I find the texture compact and sometimes dry instead of fluffy and moist.

Hmm.. their rivals on Loop street do a far better job in my opinion.
Devon Boshoff
I visited this bakery years ago during the peak of it's hype - I only have fond memories of that experience. I brought my family here to hopefully build some new memories - It was truly disappointing.

The location is a tad dingy - You need to pay to get "Safe" parking. Ironic that on the way back to our cars we were threatened and nearly mugged. I also cannot justify the prices there - They clearly cater for an international audience - R50 for a cupcake. Yeah they look great and I am sure it does great for social media marketing but as far as taste - Average at best. Also ordered a double fudge brownie (might not have the terminology correct there) and it was dry as can be. It was smothered in chocolate (did nothing to help the dry brownie itself). The container also leaked all over the car.

The bakery itself is also super busy and there is no indication as to where to queue. People stand where they want and on a busy day today it was simply unpleasant. On the plus side - the staff members were friendly.

In conclusion (my personal experience may be very different from yours): Unsafe, Overly-hyped and over-priced.
Talia De Mendonça
Such a warm and inviting place to sit and indulge in one of their many treats! The staff was very friendly and helpful and their coffee was great. I ordered a basic chocolate cupcake and it was rich and fresh. I would definitely recommend a trip to this bakery.

I love Charly's bakery just for the whole concept and the vibe in the place but it really can do with an upgrade. The eats look better than they taste. The chocolate cake sometimes tastes almost like it's a few days old. There is so much competition now that I feel Charly's needs to up their game a bit. It really is an iconic place to visit when in Cape Town.

Charlys Bakery has been around for many years and even though their cakes are beautifully decorated, the wicked chocolate cupcakes and cheesecake that I tried was nothing to write home about..the service is quite slow as well.In my opinion, I think this place is overpriced and not worth all the hype.
Cindy Balie
Had a bad experience when we tried to order my niece’s 1st birthday cake, last year: the lady who helped us was super dismissive and condescending. We ended up getting excellent and friendly service from the Velvet Cake Co. 😌

We gave Charly’s a second chance this year for her second birthday. This time around a (slightly) warmer reception. While the shop certainly is charming and inviting, the cake was a MASSIVE disappointment: dry and tasteless, and not quite decorated as we’d expected. No bang for our buck. To be exact we spent R850 and cake was probably worth R250 (but this is because we’re taking into account labour 😔)
Helena
Overrated and overpriced, the decor of the cake was nothing short of spectacular but the actual cake tasted awful. The cake sponge was absolutely dry.
Caryn Rajh
Love the quaint little shop. The pastries and treats are sure winners for me, I can't fault them. Love the peacan tartlets and red velvet cupcakes.
I had my 21st cake done here and while the chocolate cake itself was good the fondant and filling was way to sweet to enjoy the cake.
Perhaps I just chose the wrong pairing but I'd defs go back.
Robyn Smith
Fantastic chocolate fudge brownie, and the best coffee. Very relaxing vibes, to sit outside under a cover and enjoy your coffee and cake. Would definitely go again

I have had mixed experiences of Charly's over the years. No doubt it's an institution, and a fun bakery to visit, especially with first timers. I've ordered birthday cakes here for friends once or twice and been slightly disappointed at the texture and flavour of the cakes. But recently, I tried their vegan red velvet cupcakes and I was super impressed. I'll be getting these again soon!
Trevez Mcfc Jacobs
Litter outside the bakery possibly due to the construction, a little off putting. R60 for a themed iced cookie surprised me, I'm not sure what the going rate is for these type of things.
Livashnee David
It's a good selection of cakes, cupcakes and biscuits. Carrot and pineapple cake was okay. Tasted a sample piece of the chocolate cake, that was great.
Very friendly staff.
Jordan Hannah
Good experience to have in the bag as Charlys is so popular and well known. However the cakes are not amazing and quite over priced. Now that I've been there I won't go back again.
Jenine Van Rooyen
Second time I came to this shop. Everyone ignored me after waiting 10 minutes someone helped me. I was the only one to ask for help. I bought over R700 cupcakes and cookies. The pink and blue monsters was so hard and dry. Could only eat the icing. The chocolate cupcakes were also dry. It was terrible. I wont be back and won't recommend it. I am really dispointed.
Hitesh
A definite visit. Must have the brownie with extra extra chocolate sauce..... each bite is soo heavenly for chocolate lovers.
Ambience is ok. The staff is very friendly and the star baker sisters are always happy to have a picture with you. Will surely visit each time I'm in CT.
Lizekie4
Their chocolate fudge cake is amazing😍 They even pour extra chocolate sauce in the box when you take a take away. Their other products are good to but the chocolate fudge cake is a must try.
Wanderlust Coffee
I don't understand what the big uproar is about. As I walked in, there was water falling on me as there's a hole in the roof. They have such bad service; the woman looked at me and just walked away when I started talking to her to give my order. There's no line; people are just standing around trying to be helped. Their prices are so high; R25 for a cupcake is a little too much. It tasted good but more like a muffin than a cupcake. I'm very disappointed and won't be going back.

Yrina Pustella

Best cakes in town, chocolate slice drenched in chocolate sauce, Sesame Street vanilla cupcakes or customized cakes to meet your needs. Always a pleasure to visit and getting service with a smile!
Priyanka Harry
Their chocolate truffle cake keeps me coming back. Absolutely heavenly. I have tasted their cupcakes and other chocolate cakes but the truffle cake is my favourite 💕
Dunc.irv
A bit disappointed with the whole experience, they can make very nice custom cakes but I was not blown away with the flavors of anything, seemed a bit average. Staff were (sort of) friendly but I couldn't hear what the lady was saying, and she seemed uninterested in trying to make herself heard, I asked about the different options of cakes slices and cupcakes and she mumbled them to me as if her mind was lost in Narnia.
The options are out dated, I've been here years before and it's still exactly the same stuff. Nothing new.
Only pies for a savory option so this place isn't a good option for lunch or breakfast.
Pusm
No no no. If the name is a reminder of ChaIie's Chocolate Factory they should be sued for it. The decor and the food are so basic that they can't compete with the quality you find nowadays around town. Just an example, it looks like they can only do icing , and not even an excellent one. Very disappointing .
Lauren Niekerk
My friends were very eager to try this place but unfortunately once we did, we were disappointed. There is a large variety of cakes to choose from so you are sure to find one you like. The cake itself is alright in terms of taste. The service was shocking. There is no system to ordering either. We waited ages before we were served and when we eventually were helped, the lady who helped us was rude and offish.
Samantha Taylor
Charly's Bakery is well known in Cape Town. Such a sweet place and the staff are lovely. I love their concept and their treats are great. I wouldn't say it's the best bakery I've been to but it's a nice place to go see while you are in Cape Town
Rayne Alexander
Delicious cupcakes and cakes, possibly a bit overpriced but definitely worth it if you have a super special ocassion. One of the few times I will eat almonds is in these cakes!
Chelsea E
Lovely decorative and visually appealing cakes ..however lacks in flavor.
Decent petit fours ...
a bit of an under whelming experience
perhaps over-priced and over-rated

We first went to Charly's a few years ago after watching the show and I really loved the wicked chocolate cake and cupcakes.

When I got married I decided to surprise my wife with the wedding cake from Charly's. I arranged the consultation (think it was with Roch) and went in with an idea of what I wanted. After the consultation the cake we came up with was so much better than what I wanted. It was also important to me that my daughter be part of the cake, which they did perfectly.

3 tiers, bottom 2 tiers were chocolate and top tier was red velvet (red velvet is wife's favourite) which we took with on honeymoon. All 3 tiers were covered in white chocolate ganache (we don't like fondant)

The cake was really amazing.. My wife was amazed at how beautiful it looked, how realistic the toppers were. The cake tasted amazing and our top tier was so fresh and moist even 4 days into our honeymoon. My daughter really loved eating the topper of herself.

I will always be grateful to Charly's for my amazing wedding cake.
Candice
Don't know what all the hype is about, the place is your average bakery. There's no system to ordering and the staff are not friendly. Not the best experience, was expecting fun and quirky and got boring and below average.
Tia
We've all seen or atleast heard of Charly's Bakery and their "mucking afazing", quirky cakes and novelty cupcakes and cookies. This is why I was very excited when I visited their bakery for the first time. Unfortunately I was somewhat disappointed as they have become too commercial or focused on the way their cakes look as opposed to the quality and taste... the Cookie Monster Cupcakes were quite dry as well as some of the other cupcakes. I will say that I really enjoyed the Triple Chocolate brownie which is the only reason I gave a 3.0 rating as well as the fact that their cakes all look stunning and well crafted. It was fun taking pictures at the iconic Charly's Bakery wall but other than that the bakery has become more of a gimmick. There was not much seating space but it did have a relaxed atmosphere where one could enjoy a coffee and treat.

Uhm ... no ... I feel like Cape Town has so much more to get in terms of good quality baked goods. Take a walk around the corner and there are at least 3 other places getting it right. Charlie's cake was a bit disappointing and didn't live up to the hype at all -but maybe it's just me. I'm a big fan of moist cakes packing the flavor punch not just the icing.
Sara
The cookies I tasted from here were nice but nothing amazing. I do like their wicked chocolate cupcakes but that's about it. It is quite pricey but if you're looking for cute stuff that is not necessarily the best cake you've ever had, this is the place.
Diana Mak
I was so excited to come try this! But as soon as I walked into the cafe I was a bit disappointed at the quality of the baked goods. Over done with a lot of icing and it didn't look fresh. - don't get me wrong, they look super cute but they not the light puff pastries that I thought I'd find. It was jam packed with a lot of kids very excited to get their goodies. We however walked out empty handed.
Capetown_restaurants
Having heard so much about this place I was so disappointed when I finally got to go. The cakes are boring at best, and dry or sickly usually. The coffee isn't great, especially after having to beg the waiters to bring it to you. All in all, I left feeling sad that I'd wasted my money and the calories.
Harun
Ordered my mothers birthday cake here, the cake was very dry and tastless! For the price you pay you atleast expect a cake that is somewhat juicy/moist but it was extremely dry, this was the second cake i have ordered at charlys- i refuse to go back here ever again
Rachelle
A colleague recommended this bakery and described it as the best bakery in central Cape Town. I have to admit although very small the piece of cake and coffee I had was superb.
DBMadventures
It was an ordinary day in the heart of Cape Town, when I visited a bakery, Charly’s Bakery in District Six, but there was nothing ordinary about this bakery.

As you approach the pink and white striped building (representing their cake boxes, of course), you see a glimpse of really funky cake inspired street art. This gives you a little taste of the craziness you might experience inside. There is much more to this colourful building than meets the eye. Built in 1898, it is one of a few original buildings left in the historic area. Before becoming the proud home of the bakery in March 2009, it used to be the Jewish bookstore Beinkenstadt. The building still boasts with some of its original features, and the ceiling and wooden flooring were restored to its previous glory.

Charly’s Bakery, a family-owned business, founded in 1989 by Charly and run today by his wife, Jaqueline (Jackie) Biess, their daughters and their wonderful team of 36 Oompa Loompas, as they are referred to on their tv show, “Charley’s Cake Angels”.

As you enter the bakery, you are surrounded by pops of colour and interesting items, like their chandelier made from tea cups. Their friendly staff assisted me and took me through the variety of cakes they had on offer. I sampled the wicked chocolate cake. This dense, moist brownie-style chocolate cake covered with chocolate ganache was delicious. It is their best seller, closely followed by their smooth and creamy baked cheesecakes, available in 6 different flavours. The bakery is known for their “Mucking Afazing” designer cakes, bright cupcakes and cookies. I could have easily spent hours looking at each of these creations, such is the level of detail on each.

Their portfolio speaks for itself, as they have baked for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Sir Elton John and South Africa’s very own Archbishop Desmond Tutu to name but a few. They are very popular under the brides to be, so better order your wedding cake early to avoid disappointment.

After sampling the wicked chocolate cake, I was hooked, and I ordered a slice. If you are a chocolate lover, you will love this. They have seating inside, as well as outside the bakery, where you can get some fresh air and enjoy the mountain view while sipping on your coffee and eating their yummy goodies. If you are in a rush, they do takeaways as well, so no excuses.

Charly’s have become such a big part of their community, supporting over 30 different charities. The main charity that they adopted is the “Big Issue”, a non-profit magazine organisation assisting willing unemployed adults to make a living, selling the monthly general-interest magazine. The relationship between them goes back 16 years when Charly’s was still in their Roeland Street premises and the Big Issue was their neighbour. To this day, every Thursday, except over Christmas when they are closed, the Big Issue collects a box of assorted goodies, to enjoy at their weekly vendor meetings.

As baking is in their blood, I asked Daniella (Charly and Jackie’s daughter) to share advice for all the amateur bakers out there. Her advice is quite simply the following:

1. Watch as many YouTube and craftsy demos as you can!

2. Trust in your own innate creativity and play with new ideas

3. Have fun!

4. Innovate, don't imitate

It was a fun place to visit, and their staff was great. It was clear that everything Charly’s baked was made with love. Their quirky cookies also make for some great gifts. Charly’s Bakery gets the DBM splash of approval.

Visiting this bakery is an experience I'd recommend due to its location, decor and layout. The variety of cookies and cakes is vast, as well as the quiches. All in all I was very impressed! The chocolate cheese cake and lemon meringue were out of this world!
Ruqaya Gabier
i don't really see the hype around this bakery. while their pieces are beautifully decorated, i find they lack flavour and depth. service is sub par as well.
Francesca Favero
I have such mixed feelings about Charly's bakery.
Whenever I have had cake that has been specially ordered for a birthday - it is phenomenal, their wicked chocolate and their lemon meringue are both delicious!
However, on the few occasions I have had something to eat at Charly's I have been less than impressed. Average cupcakes (though the look amazing!), pies and petit fours. Service not great either.
It's a big yes for ordering whole cakes for occasions, but a big no to actually going there for coffee or a bite to eat.
FoodiewhippedSA
Amazing place that is a must to visit. I had one of my business trips to Cape Town and Charly's Bakery was on definite to do list. I pop in as I was leaving the mother city. Great place very magical. Just reminded me of a wonderful fantasy land. I picked some peti
four's for my wife as a little gift from the mother city. Great place. Neeta Raga-D

During my high school experience my friends always got Charly's bakery goods for their birthdays and honestly I've never had a pleasing experience with their cakes. I'm a very easy person when it comes to food and I'm really not difficult however this isn't a recommendation is you want cake for a birthday or any kind of event. Yes the decorations are outrageous and amazing and I'm sure a lot of effort go into it!

Firstly the icing is extremely too sweet and rich and really isn't mouth watering as everyone says it is. I don't like the butter icing they use.
Second the cake in itself isn't to die for. I've had many different cakes from around the world and from the best patisseries in France as well as, one of my old friends was a pastry chef therefore I've tasted the best and this wasn't.
Neeta Raga-D
Located in Cape Town, Charlys bakery, they have the most beautiful decorated cakes, I have tried the petit fours, the chocolate one is yummy! The cake is moist and delicious!

A must try whenever you visit Cape Town!

The colours are so inviting! A special treat for sure!
Jana Van Rensburg
I don't get what all the fuss is about. Apart from looking outrageously good the cupcakes, cakes, pies etc. doesn't taste as good as they look. Give it a try just to say you were there but don't expect an out of this world taste.
Wencke Lasch
My mom insisted to see Charley's bakery due to the TV show .. cupcakes were amazing but surroundings disappointing .. needs a little facelift and nicer atmosphere .. would definitely buy a special cake for a special person here ..
Iman Bawa
Had to pick up a cake for a friend so decided to stay for a chocolate brownie. The brownie was heaven in earth so gooey but not overly sweet just perfect. The only reason they not receiving full marks is because I had some of the cake my friend orders and it was a complete let down after the brownie
Glen Hunt
Overrated and expensive. A novelty act. We decided to check it out after watching the tv show and while it looked all amazing and such it was a complete let down.

Chocolate cake was so dry it was almost ash. One puff of wind and it would fallen apart.

It was crowded and just really over overrated.

Won't go back, even if you get me a spot in the show.
Sanelisiwe Sani Sibanyoni
I got my birthday petit fours from Charlys two days ago & they are worth the walks from Adderely. They're always fresh. I'm not too keen on the sweetness of the cupcakes & other cakes but every once in a while we all deserve a little Charlys!
Barbara Ann Hall
Cape Towns legendary bakery!! Their cakes are well known for being amongst the best around as is their savoury section of pies, quiches etc. You can sit outside and eat but I recommend that you take your goodies home with you. You do however need to try their bakery if you haven't done so yet. Order a special Birthday or Wedding cake from them. You won't be disappointed!! They Rock!!!😎😘
Jolene
Came to Cape Town and had Charly's on my list of things to do because of the buzz on social media. Even though everything was beautifully decorated, I was very disappointed in the taste. I had a (very overpriced) chocolate cupcake that was dry and not tasty at all. The cakes on display looked stunning, so I hope they taste as good as they look.
Keagan
Only decent thing worth ordering is the chocolate brownie/cake with sauce poured over, everything else tastes pretty much the same as everything, else icing sugar and more icing sugar.
J D
Pretty pretty cakes and what not but the sponge really isn't the best. A little to dry for me. Worth a visit once but wouldn't go back again.
Mikaela
I visited Charly's Bakery to see what all the hype was about (and to get a picture by the bright pink Charly's Bakery wall). The people at Charly's sure know how to make cute cupcakes! I just wish they tasted as good as they looked. The slice of cake I had was very dry and didn't really taste like anything. The coffee was equally disappointing. It's something you have to do once if you're in Cape Town, but not worth a second visit.
Jessy Da Silva
Not very impressed with Charly's Bakery, with the reputation it has I really expected alot more from them. I enjoyed their red velvet cupcakes but their chocolate cupcakes were quite hard. Not in a hurry to go back.
Wez_Undercover
Don't really see what the fuss is about, cakes are decorated very nicely but doesn't wow the tongue. Coffee was good and the location is great for meetings but that is about that
Simone Hasselbach
I honestly dont know what the hype is about. I had blueberry baked cheesecake and my husband had some or the other vanilla cake. Was average at best and super pricey. Wont be back anytime soon im afraid.
Talia Lee Cohen
Interesting to see the ratings now. I bought a cake for my birthday the very first few months it had opened. The cake was 😍😍😍😍 I took many of my friends here, raving about their pineapple carrot cake and their monster cupcakes 🌸 and then I bought my dad a cake for his 50th birthday! I specifically requested vanilla sponge with a Liverpool uhhh bra.

The cake looked stunning. I flew with it that afternoon all the way to Johannesburg. Now imagine my surprise when we cut into it and chocolate glazed upon the knife. Not only was it chocolate, but it was not fresh and moist. Perhaps from the flight? Needless to say, I did message them about this and their response was that it was because I had ordered the cake too close to time it was needed as it was a busy time for them. That would have been fine if they had only told me before. I haven't been since. This did happen a few years ago, but it doesn't seem worth another go..
Foodster CT
Charly's is good at making bright, pretty things. Do they deliver on taste? Meh. Pretty standard cake stuff.. Extremely dense chocolate cake (a bit like putting a brick in your stomach really). The chocolate they use on their cakes is the opposite of great quality. The individual pies are good. Great flavor on the lamb with a rich, flaky pastry. A touch overpriced at R43 though.
Sumendra Chetty
Charly's Bakery looks like fun and trust me- the interior is as cute and out-there as the exterior. I was unfortunately underwhelmed, I tried the red velvet cupcake and chocolate cupcake and found that while they look very pretty, they taste ok. There's a lot of bakeries in Cape Town that leave a better impression.
Joshua
Great place; love their pies as they are extremely filling. They have a good set of friendly staff. Haven't tried their sweet things as yet but I can see myself visiting again so I'll give it a try then.
Tiyaarah Cloete
I don't get the hype. I've had their baked cheesecake and their chocolate cake, both underwhelming. I didn't like it, but I have only been there once
Tracey-lee Lincoln
cakes are nice..I had a Triple choc brownie, and a spoonful of a friends wicked choc loaf, was yummy ..however the spinach and Feta Pie I had was so salty it wasn't edible.
Juanita Rene Stears
Loving sweet stuff as much as i do, i just had to visit Charly's Bakery! Walked in, was in Sweets Heaven, and couldn't decide what to take! I had a chocolate brownie covered in chocolate sauce, and my partner (a cheesecake lover) had a nice big piece of cheesecake. I loved mine but he was a bit disappointing in the cheesecake he had! I Will definitely go back and take him with to try something else and restore his faith in the bakery!!
Princess Petra
I had to try out one of Cape Town's must-see places. When you are walking up to this funky building you can't help but want to see what is inside. From the minute you walk in you don't know where to look. This place is just too cute! The glass counters display a lot of cupcakes and treats. We tasted a few and I didn't see what all the hype was about. I didn't like the taste of any of their icings, in my opinion the cupcakes and Petit Fours look much better than they taste. On the plus side, service is quite fast and their coffee isn't half bad. Overall I am glad I went but I don't think I'll be back in hurry.
Tally Leach
Very popular bakery with a lot of publicity. Beautifully presented food but unfortunately they focus more on the presentation of their food rather than the actual taste.
Nicola Barrett
It is a must-see place (including an obligatory photo against the wall) and the food is good, but not exceptional. The food does look really nice though and the cupcakes and biscuits look almost too good to eat!
Glenn Muller
I can see what the fuss is all about...leveraging on the 'popularity' of their tv show and showcasing it to all and sundry- Charly's bakery is an instituion in Cape Town and locals and tourists come from afar to delight in their quirky cupcakes and decadent cakes .

Service can be dodgy at times, prices definitely geared towards those with dollars and euros, however cakes are okay. Just okay. Nothing to blow me away; yes they no "cake boss" and I don't think they are trying to be, but still something Cape Town can be proud of.
Clare Appleyard
Popular place for cake - lots of yummy looking goodies, but haven't been blown away by the cakes. Today we had a Petit Four (perfect size) and a blueberry white chocolate cheesecake. Bit too much crust on the cheesecake. Fairly standard in our view.
Lauren Kim
I was excited to visit this iconic bakery after seeing it on tv and in magazines. We went at lunch time and it was super busy. You have to pay for your food upfront and then they will bring the food to your table. It was chaos - they could improve their ordering and paying system so that it is more streamlined and efficient. The quiche was really tasty and other members had the pies who complimented them. Their desserts were great - their chocolate fudge brownie with sauce is beyond decadent - enough to feed 4 people as its so rich. Their cheesecakes were good - specifically their double chocolate cheesecake. Their food items are amazing but if it's good service you after - be patient.
Jayshall Vassen
Although the decoration of Charly's cakes are fun and vibrant I find this place highly overrated. Their cupcakes are dry, the icing tastes fake and they are overpriced. After being quoted a ridiculous amount for a simple birthday cake and being treated as if I need them more than they need me I won't be back in a hurry.

I don't understand how Charly's bakery has a good reputation as I always have family from out of town that want to try their cupcakes but have to let them know their cakes are not up to standard.

I first tried them a couple years back in my first year at UCT and thought that their cupcakes looked great and quirky but tasted stale. I was disappointed as I watched their show on TV. Since then, I've tried them a few times hoping things would have gotten better but no.

I love the look of the bakery and think its a real tourist attraction but maybe try to make desserts that deserve the attention it gets.

We took the kids there on Saturday and they were so thrilled to choose one of their huge cookies! Love the building, its position and the funky vibe of their "brighter is better" decorated cakes/cupcakes/cookies. A true Cape Town establishment well worth a visit with the backdrop of Table Mountain behind.

When you go to this iconic place, expect and indeed celebrate the queue you are certain to be in.
It's a South African institution and the queues it enjoys are an intricate statement of its stature.
I went with my wife and bought enough pastry, chocolate and biscuit to paralyze a giant African elephant.
It's impossible to make a choice.
It's even harder to bring yourself to eat it.
It's just a slice of pure proudly SA. Surely that's enough........

I had a terrible experience with Charly's a while ago and have not been back since.

I ordered a cake for my boyfriend's birthday and arrived five minutes before their opening time on a freezing Saturday morning. I opened the door, said hello, and was greeted by the woman behind the counter with a very rude "we are not open yet". I started to say that was ok, I would just sit in the restaurant and wait for five minutes, to which she pretty much screamed "we are not open yet".

I was so shocked that I was expected to wait outside in the freezing cold that I left, and got a friend to fetch the cake. I would have just cancelled the order, but unfortunately they require payment upfront.

This shocking service is such a pity because the cake was actually delicious. However, I won't be going back to Charly's ever again. There really is no need to, as there are so many other lovely bakeries in Cape Town where they will do a custom cake for you, without being rude.

All I can say is DECADENCE! Situated next to the old castle, this pink building oozes temptation (the good kind). Enjoyed a slice of their "death by chocolate" cake and was in heaven. The outside seating was dirty and I expected better. Service was swift and friendly and glad I could tick this one off my list of to-do's in Cape Town. Please go and visit and be pleasantly surprised.

We came here to have some cake and were not disappointed. The brownies were an absolut highlight and the interior of the shop was decorated lovely! We need to come back to try some of the fancy cupcakes!

Seriously expected so much more out of this place. Lady at the till was extremely rude, when I stepped into the shop I saw all flys sitting on pies and pastries, the sweet goodies like brownies shortbread etc are decent . Will not go there again

Absolutely the best cake I have ever ever had!!!... I always said when I turn 21 I would love Charly's Bakery to do my cake. I had a few places to choose from but Im so happy I stuck with my first choice of letting Charly's do my cake! I had a picture of a cake I wanted but because I was paying for my own cake and had a budget, I couldnt have the exact cake I wanted. Yet Charly's was so kind and amazing to create a spin off cake according to the cake I originally wanted. Such a creative and unique bakery with amazing, freindly, creative people working there. Was so awesome when we sat down and talked about what the cake would look like and all the creative ideas we can do on the cake. Charly's was soo so excited to do my cake and I was sooo happy and excited they were doing my cake, sticking to the theme I wanted, what I wanted on my cake, what colours I wanted and what flavours I wanted and sticking to my budget at the same time... Their service was excellent, even after working hours they phoned my mom to talk about the cake and kept emailing us, awesome communication!... Well spent money I must say, I paid for my amazing, out of this world cake and for fabulous service!... If I could I would buy a birthday cake from them every year!!! ... Best place for custom cakes!

I went on holiday to Cape Town and of course after being a huge fan of the TV show I had to visit the bakery. The line was ridiculous as expected but it was definitely not worth the wait. All the cupcakes and biscuits that were ordered were not fresh. They were ice cold! The biscuits were dry and tasteless. The goodies are so expensive so it's nothing but a fancy name and a photo op. I definitely will not be going back!

What's the big Charly about? Very disappointed with our cupcakes which were dry and really very poor. The long queues and fame of this charming bakery suggest a magical food experience, however it is bitterly disappointing. I hope the owners improve the quality! Not worth visiting!

Paid Charly's a visit to see what all the hype was about. Had a cupcake and was pretty let-down. As mentioned in other reviews, they get an A++ for creativity, but the cupcake was, "maybe", a 5 out of 10 in taste.

Went here with a group of friends and all the treats were heavenly!!! Plus they have the freshest things on the planet. I live how attractive the store is, draws your attention immediately. Just that the seating area is beyond small.

Fantastic looking cakes, biscuits and sweet stuff. Tried the baked strawberry cheesecake and my wife had the chocolate and fudge cake slice. Didn't really enjoy the cheesecake, possibly because it was baked. The chocolate and fudge slice oozed with chocolate and was nice and moist but was not too sweet, which made it good to eat. Service was slow, and tables were limited. But it is tourist season so they were busy as well.

It's one of those places which are hyped up by people. we had a decent morning breakfast but not as great as I had heard. the cakes, dessert are beautiful cute looking, but are not the best I have had if I compare to Europe, Asia. Had a nice large cookie for take away, it was nice.

Second visit at Charly's Bakery. First visit I had everything chocolate and I was thoroughly disappointed. This time I decided to try something else. I had the lemon meringue cupcake which was gluten free and an apple pie. The lemon meringue cupcake was very nice, not to sweet. The Apple pie was also very nice, the pastry was perfect and it had a strong cinnamon kick!

Charly's is honestly so average. They definitely get 10/10 for their creativity and decorations however their cakes are of such poor quality, not to mention their ridiculous prices.
Their sense of hygiene is also quite a problem, there are always flys roaming around on the cupcakes which is such a put off.
It is definitely not worth all the hype.

Charly's never fail to disappoint me. It always make me happy to walk in there and to see all the quirky innovative designs. I think it is easy to get blaze'about the skill it takes to do this. It is my go-to place for the perfect pick-me-upper gift ( or even an insult, if you need one ;) ). It is like edible greeting cards. Or sometimes one just need to stuff your face with something decadent to drown away your sorrows. My favourite is a slice of Hummingbird cake. It is always so moist and bursting with flavours. This is by far my favourite comfort grab which just put the world right back where it should be. I am and will always be a fan.

Went to the Bakery because I'd seen the show- amazing experience! Vibed with the waitress, food was delicious! Best chocolate cake and brownies and the decor is out of this world. Not only would I go back, I'd be happy to recommend to anyone. Definitely worth every cent- and would happily pay more. Well deserved Cape Town landmark label!
It might seem that Charly's Bakery is the ideal place to visit, however, they are overpriced and definitely not worth all that fuss. The packaging is eye-catching and appealing but the quality is disappointing.

I was a really big charly's fan but I've been disappointed by the sweet things more than once. The food looks absolutely amazing, they get an A++ for decoration. The taste, on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. My boyfriends red velvet tasted very strange, the icing in particular was very fake. The icing on my chocolate cupcake was delicious but the cake itself really wasn't great. I've had similar experiences in the past and I feel that quantity has started taking preference over quality. Very disappointing.

I have to agree with some of the reviewers below. I've tried Charlies confectioneries a few times, and while visually fantastic, I've generally walked away thinking I've had better, or I can make this better at home.
Although I ordered the quiche once, and that was pretty good, so perhaps their savoury menu is better?

Charly’s Bakery has done amazing things, which have contributed to the East City’s revival, but post TV stardom the quality of their goods has not always been that great. Recently, however, I had a truly amazing slice of cake at Charly’s that put them on the path of redemption for me. I will be back.

aah charlys, pretty much the go to place when you’re looking for quirky party cakes. Their chocolate cupcakes are my favourite and they are only too happy to decorate them exactly the way you want them… naughty or not ;)
Sunny
This place is over rated - tiny venue, very disorganised, unfriendly staff and average cakes... In fact the red velvet cupcake was terrible...
Jarne Botha
Their baked goodies are amazing and beautiful but their service is not that great. a little friendliness and not looking at us like we are disturbing them would've made our visit much better.

Had an incredibly enormous slice of cheesecake here for less than R40! I chose the blueberry white chocolate, which was pretty good but a little dry. The cookies were decorated so nicely and looked really good as well! A friend of mine had a birthday party recently and we had a cake from here, and it was very delicious and really beautiful as well! Definitely would recommend, plus they have shirts too!

The cakes were absolutely amazing, great flavour and delicious!! Eclectic designs, fun and creative cake artistry!! However, the waitresses were not friendly at all, they were short and to the point with orders... No atmosphere to match the wonderful cakes and I felt disconnected as a customer to the story of Charly's and I didn't feel welcomed in the slightest!!
Lindsay
Not worth all the hype, love the story, think the cakes look good but they don't taste amazing. Very dense cupcakes. Very crowded over weekends. Love the idea that you can see them prepare all the cakes. So... been there done that.
Chantal
Was in ct and this place was on my to do list... was quite disappointed... everything is really overrated... it looks good.. but tasteless and fry. I agree that u eat with your eyes.. but guys.. ur stuff tastes a bit mass produced! Woolies is mass produced and they still manage to produce quality.

I know everyone raves about this place and because they had their own show on food network, we decided to go and get some cupcakes bought a whole selection of their famous cup cakes and quite frankly we weren't impressed they were dry & tasteless! They decorate very well but I feel that taste is more important and they failed to deliver!
