Review Sloppy Sam's - Cape Town Central

Albert Gerber
Such personalised service it feels like you are visiting the family which owns the business in their home. After we had already paid we enquired with the sweet owner what denning vleis was. We were already out the door when she insisted that we return for a free taste. To our amazement a whole plate of denning vleis with all the accompaniments arrived. Wow
Erma Pretorius
Stopped for lunch. Today they had a buffet with salads, chicken curry, rice, babotie, yellow rice, dhal and so much more. A starter was served and also dessert.

This is a MUST if you are in Cape Town! Oustanding cuisine, breathtaking views and if you are fortunate enough to meet the owners Yusuf and Nazli, you will also hear about the history of the Bo-Kaap and the incredible people that make up this cosmopolitam community. Book now!

Beautiful view overlooking Cape Town and Table Mountain. Family run, traditional cape Malay buffet.
Patric Bengtsson-Davids
We had two different taster platters. To me only the denningvleis was fantastic, while the other dishes are made much better at home or by family or friends. Very nice service though and the view is outstanding!

My family we took a trip to Bo Kaap Kombuis for the buffet experience to be honest would’ve liked a wider variety however the food was okay traditional and the desert was absolutely delicious you will definitely enjoy the views make booking id suggest to get a good seating it’s not very big but it was nice and quiet…they don’t make use of Amex card and no soft music playing in the back keep that in mind overall it’s was good

What a joyous and delightful host and family. Authentic Cape Malay traditional food and the views are stunning. It doesn't get better than this. Have the starter samoosa which was part of the buffet, you won't want one from anywhere else ever again. Recommended to me by #Cape Malay Consultants @Nazreen Salie.

Lovely waiters with rich heritage displayed on the walls of the restaurant. A unique and wonderful experience

Homely atmosphere with stunning views, the food was good too.

Firstly, this is a business that is family owned, Nazli and Boeta Yusuf is always on hand to welcome you with a warm smile. Secondly, you have an amazing view over the Bo-Kaap and the CBD, from a restaurant in the heart of this cultural hub. Thirdly, you have an amazing food spread being prepared, freshly prepared, FULL OF FLAVOR, traditional Malay Cuisine at its best. The pricing is on par with other restaurants, just more value / quality food, for your money from this restaurant. The restaurant had gone over and above most Cape Town restaurants, by having screens installed between tables, in an effort to prioritize safety for patrons where it comes to covid. I've taken many local and international guests to this establishment and they have never disappointed. I recommend this restaurant to everyone, and the warm reception by the owners, makes it feel like your visiting family opposed to eating at a restaurant.

Amazing authentic Bo-Kaap food experience, great service & amazing view over capetown!

WELL PRICED with EXCELLENT views and AMAZING food! Great value for money in a beautiful setting with an amazing view over the Bo-kaap and table mountain. Wow- one of the best restaurants in this area in Cape Town. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

Not all heroes wear capes, but the Malays are real superheroes when it comes to their traditional cuisine. I decided to visit the colourful and pretty streets of Bo Kaap, and I would say to eat the food of the people here is a wonderful experience, or as the kids would say No Caap. Really friendly service, tasty food and gorgeous views. So you should curry here as fast as you can, pay the reasonable rices and get it in you. Highly recommend!

I was invitee to dinner by colleagues. The view from the restaurant is unbeatable. The food waa good but a bit cold seeing as it is a buffet. However all the typical Cape Malay food was on offer and very tasty. We were served a very moist chocolate cake and icecream for dessert which was lovely.

What a beautiful restaurant and an equally impressive menu and service. A true gem, hidden in the quaint suburb called Bo-Kaap. This place is also a perfect venue for that intimate wedding or special occasion. Loved everything about it, especially the very tasty meals and reasonable prices. Booking is essential.

We stumbled across this place whilst checking out Bo-Kaap. The view is breathtaking, as if the the mountain is on display just to this area. There are only 2 tables on the balcony so booking is a must. Great covid practices with screens between tables & waiter keeps distance. The food is very traditional & the establishment does have a warm family feel. No kids menu but they do offer chicken nuggets & chips. The falooda shake is heavenly. Pricing averages around 140-220 for a main meal. The Parking is on the street amongst residential holdings.
Shaolin Cafe
Finally experienced the food after lockdown. Tasty is a definite yes. One of Cape Town's best curry houses.

Everything is perfect from the delicious Malay food to the impeccable service and the breath taking views. We keep coming back again and again. I highly recommend Bo-Kaap Kombuis.

Best kept little gem in Greenpoint - Mediterranean style cuisine ...perfect flavouring, with moussaka which leaves you feeling it’s straight from “Nonnas kitchen”. Dishes kept rustic and simple but packed with layers of flavours which delight your every sense - Lovely intimate and casual setting perfect for both family and couples. Staff and owner on point turning customers into long term customers and friends / loved this spot - highly recommended!

A Delightful and understated surprise in Greenpoint. The owner (and Chef Hoonan) understands the value of connecting with his patrons. Friendly and engaging staff. With friends and family popping into their favourite little joint - it leaves one almost feeling like you “belong” and you’ve been friends forever! Food simple but full of flavour. Delicious and really a worthwhile experience. ... recommended dishes would have to be pickled octopus and mouussaka ...
Damien Jack Anderson
We tried this joint out as a few colleagues. One of our colleagues is Persian, so she wanted to give it a shot.

The welcome we got was warm and friendly. Hooman was the perfect host. He threw together a bit of a tasting meal for us, and we were so impressed. The meat was so soft and tender. And the flavors were perfect. Let's not even talk about how good the Hummus was.

Definitely give it a go!

On the rare occasion I will rate a 5 ☆ experience based on three things... The food.. the ambience.. the service. All three of these are TOP notch at Sloppy Sam's. An absolute GEM. The food is absolutely delicious and the ambience is homely and romantic and unpretentious. Hooman is passionate about his meals... and his Roasted Lamb Neck is heavenly. The Mezzah is amazing and the personal way in which you are greeted is exceptional. Very special place and we will be back.

Cozy and casual date night...just how we like it!

We went here for a date night and it was perfect. The vibe is relaxed and cosy and the food is amazing! The owner (and chef), Hooman, is great, he came to greet us and asked how our food and experience was..made us feel very special. Will definitely recommend and go here again soon!

Surprisingly good food, walking into Sloppy Sam I didn’t have high expectations but absolutely enjoyed the food. I would definitely go back again. The decor does need a bit of updating. The food on the other hand is worth a few more visits.

Very quirky and cool interior. Food was very good! Service was great. Cosy little place to enjoy some comfort food. Will definitely visit again.

Went here with mates for relaxed dinner. Tried the octopus starter, which was good. Served in olive oil with pita bread. Mains tried the lamb neck and stew. Hubby's lamb neck was incredible, very tasty. The stew was good and had loads of slopping up with pita bread side. The only thing I missed in the stew & couldn't taste were the dehydrated lemons from middle east, that are rehydrated in the stew, according to waitress. Dessert was halva on ice cream. I was anticipating a small slice of halve, but they opted for the crumbled option over the ice. Was tasty regardless. Now to the pricing... although i enjoyed the vibe and setting, I do find their pricing is a tad high. Will be back.

This unique restaurant is a must for any lamb lover . The service was exceptional, we went on a quiet night. The waiter paid attention to our needs. The lamb was very fresh and only seasoned with salt&pepper which was good for a change. Most marinated meat is not fresh. They could work on upgrading their green salad, it was basically just tomatoes, cucumbers and onions so I didn't touch it.
Talia Lee Cohen
An innate selection of Persian and Mediterranean dishes. The linefish was chewy and underflavaoured. Although I enjoyed the tikka chicken (especially soaking it's sauce up in the pita) even my baby sister did not find it "spicy". Overpriced.
Jemal
What a stunning little unique venue. Service was outstanding and the food is definitely authentic, lot of lamb options for the lamb lovers. I had the line fish - which was really delish!!! The decor is so interesting - kept me busy for a while staring at all the unique goodies. Lovely vibe, will definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a romantic dinner spot. :)

What amazing food...authentic and delicious. Excellent service with friendly staff. Impressed with the chef who came over to our table to check on our meals. A 'must eat' restaurant in Cape Town.
Jonathan Holmes
Definitely one of my favorites for consistently good food and an enjoyable ambience. Being a place known more to locals than tourists, you are likely to find a table even if you have forgotten to make a booking and other restaurants are full. Mediterranean fare with a destinctively Persian touch makes this restaurant unique. The casual and not so noisy feel makes it a great place to catch up with old friends. The owner/chef will give you personal attention and explain to you how he uses the large jars of dried limes displayed on the counter to give a unique flavor to his food. Start with the meze, and then move on to either a delicious lamb shank or the Madagascan pepper steak, served with a side of roast veggies.
Neil
By far one of my favourite places in Cape Town. Dinner for two or a birthday party for 15 you will be equally impressed. The food is made simple yet delicious and the quality is always consistent. This is the place to go to if you want proper South African lamb made with Persian flair. The venue is cozy and heart warming and will make you feel at home. I have gone there for years and what I love even more than the food and venue itself is the owner Hooman, who is never shy to welcome me back with a great big hug.

What a hidden gem...if you like Lamb, you'll love Sloppy Sam. Had the lamb neck, served as a full portion...very rich but delicious. Red wine suggestion was spot on, great accompaniment. Will be back.

Of course we've had dinner at Sam's and there's nothing sloppy about it. The food is straight up, unpretentious, wysiwyg and delicious. The last time we enjoyed steak and lamb chops. A perfect Middle Eastern delight.
LuluFromJozi
Lamb neck to die for. The sauce it comes with is so delicious, that I want to eat it like soup. Restaurant had a table available for us at 6pm on a Friday night, which was awesome. Decor very cosy. Staff very friendly. A bit pricey, but for that tasty "home cooked" style food, sometimes its all you need on a cold winters day.

This little place feels like a family restaurant in Persia. The menu is simple and you can see the chefs cooking as you sit in the restaurant. There were beautiful ingredients sitting on the counter and being used in the food. The food isn't cheap at about 150 for a main but the service is personal and it's a warm and inviting restaurant. We'd go back with family.

Sloppy Sam is halal friendly and really good. I thoroughly enjoy visiting. The food is middle eastern and I simply love the flavours. The staff are always attentive and I've received good service in the past

We had a business dinner. We shared some platter starters which was very good. I shared the lamb shank and must say this was excellent, tasty and falling off the bone. For dessert I opted for the Baklava, a winner, as it was small baklava squares, easier to eat and retain flavour. The cappuchinno was a disappointment as the milk was too hot.

I'm ashamed to say last night was my first experience at this great restaurant. The service was super, and being able to see the talented chef in action is an added benefit to the atmosphere. We were 5 and all of our main courses arrived timely and beautifully. A simple yet very satisfying menu with great meze style starters and delicious mains. As can be expected lamb is a dominant choice and its understandable why, the Lamb neck, Lamb roll and Lamb shank all went down a treat. Superbly done. It was my first but not my last visit to this awesome little gem.

@sloppysameat is a revelation! Owner/#Chef Hooman never fails to exude boisterous bonhomie...matched with stupendous Persian/Greek fusion dishes!! Witness the homemade hummous (words fail me!), the INCREDIBLE Kleftika (slow-roasted lamb shank in a dreamy rosemary/lemon sauce...yummm!), and HALVA ice-cream! Can't rave about this place enough...DEF @jamescapetown FAVE! 😘🌍👏💜🌴😎😁🍰🌎

Very quaint setting , the decor is great , feels like you are in another country. The presentation of my lamb shank was dismal , with lots of white fat showing , however after removal the lamb was very tender and tasty and had a lemony sauce that worked well with the roast potatoes and fresh veggies , my partners lamb neck was very crispy and tasty , that's the one I would go for next time

Have had two experiences at Sloppy Sam - both really great.
Visit 1
Lamb shank cooked to perfection - restaurant was packed and the vibe was awesome.
Visit 2
Line fish - was undercooked but the chef rectified that immediately.
Love the intimacy and we can walk there from De Waterkant.

Just had dinner at Sloppy Sam's. Had the most delicious, flavourful lamb neck. Crunchy on the outside, soft & juicy inside & served with crispy roast potatoes & roast veg. Also tasted a meatball which full of flavour. All 8 people at our table loved their meals from the calamari to the mussaka - all great! Will definitely be back!

Went there on a Monday evening, had meatballs to start, a lamb shank main and malva pudding to end the meal. The starters were lovely and the meatballs were incredibly moist, though they would've benefited from a dipping sauce of some kind. The shank was cooked to perfection and very well seasoned. Again, I would have preferred it to be served with a tomato based, herb infused sauce but it was very lovely. Malva pudding was one of the best I've had, overall a very pleasant evening with friendly waiting staff that were always there when we needed them.

We visited sloppy Sam about a month ago and had the best evening. It was like having dinner in someones home and we left feeling satisfied and happy.

We ordered a selection of starters our favourite being the Kufteh (meatballs) that were so flavourful and well cooked as well as the Dolmeh. The squid was a bit rubbery so we wouldn’t have that again.

For mains I had the lamb roll which was a generous portion of de-boned flank and absolutely delicious. It comes with roast potatoes and we also got a plate full of roast vegetables. The lamb was well flavoured with herbs and garlic and tenderly cooked.

Definitely going back to Sloppy Sam which was anything but sloppy.

Best lamb ever!! Great food & Fabulous place !!
Must visit & very affordable ?
Host make you feel at home
Great for birthdays and romantic evenings

Nice and cosy environment. Lamb shank is to die for. The owners have really done a great job in representing their culture, truly an experience like no other.

The food is excellent. Genuine Greek food made with love (and if it's not they do a great job of making it seem loved). Quite expensive, so go for a treat to this unassuming little restaurant. The name and facade of the building give nothing away of the warmth that waits inside, and you feel instantly welcomed in this ambiently-lit and pleasantly cluttered cosy place. The owners seem like they're nice, though they're not too pleased if you don't spend a lot of money (the prices caught us off guard) and seemed a little offish once they realised we wouldn't be going in for large meals.
Definitely delicious.
Liesl Van Wyk Lotter
What a lovely surprise, the name is misleading, the interior is homely on a very busy road and you are transported to somewhere in Greece. The food is tasty and the hosts are welcoming, prefer to sit upstairs. Try everything, it's all good!

Heartwarming in every way! The decor is, as everyone has mentioned, really homely. It is one of the few places where the proprietor, Sam, makes a special effort to greet you and familiarize you with the food on offer - Greek/ Lebanese style. The calamari and lamb neck are our standard orders- good portion sizes and extremely well flavored. Sloppy sam's really stole my heart when sam's wife was generous enough to eagerly part with her fantastic kofta recipe and method, like a dear Aunty.

Great food served with authentic Turkish flavour and warm hosts. Definitely would recommend it. Lovely ambience though a little pricey.

Sloppy Sam is an absolute delight. It's cosy, intimate and warm inside, with beautiful decor that reminds me so much of Turkey. My hubby and I both decided to go for the 'Famous Sloppy Sam Lamb Shank' - best decision ever! Lamb shank that seriously just melted in your mouth and gorgeous roast potatoes and vegetables, with an incredibly delicate and thin lemon sauce.

When we asked the waiter to thank the chef for such an extraordinary meal, he looked delighted and waved us off with a huge smile when we left for the night.

We will most definitely be back!
Nicole O'Neill
Such a lovely restaurant and homely atmosphere. The food lacks representation, but at first bite you forget all about the representation because the food is so gosh darn DELICIOUS. I had the lamb shank, which was tender and fell off the bone. In terms of the lack of representation, it adds more to the homeliness of the restaurant, as it is more like home-cooked food. I had taramasalata and pita bread for starters which started my dining experience off on a good note. We had vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce for dessert: the chocolate sauce tasted like melted Cadbury chocolate - my favourite. The waitresses were lovely too, and the restaurant was busy with other customers and so there was lots of chatter and noise, which, I think, are very good things in a restaurant. They don't have a cocktail menu, which was disappointing but not the most important thing - it doesn't seem that sort of restaurant. I would recommend Sloppy Sam's for a relaxed meal in a great location. Parking may be a bit of a problem - we had to park a bit further down the road but the walk wasn't far and at least we got to walk off our food ;)

Atmosphere is fantastic and has a real homey vibe. Food is amazing and can't wait to go back????

Charming little place found by chance. It looks family-run and is just good, honest Greek food. It's in an unassuming place, but those are usually the best-kept secrets.
Richard
Excellent food with first class service. In a nutshell a great time out. From the outside you'd steer well clear if Sloppy Sam, but once you venture inside and try the Mediterranean spread you'll be hooked. Well presented and attention to authenticity is apparent. All the courses were good, wholesome food with no one asking for more. Desserts were standard issue, but mains and starters really excellent! We'll worth a nose in off Somerset Road drag... Btw.pets may be allowed depending on their behavior

Friends were visiting from from Qatar and wanted to take them somewhere quiet to catch up.
we felt as if we were in some one's home and were well looked after as if we were personal guests of the owner.
Warm and welcoming the food came out quickly and was well presented. I had the rolled lamb and potatoes and the meat was cooked to perfection. Moist and tasty coupled with very hands on proprietor makes this for a lovely night out.
Anita Shapiro
There is nothing surprising on Sloppy Sam's Greek slash Middle Eastern menu, everything you would expect is present. But what does set Sloppy Sam apart is that "Sam " is present. Restaurants with an involved and present chef/proprietor make me feel at home and as if there is a special treat in store for me. Our waitress's name was Anita too, so it really felt as if I was a guest in their home kitchen. The food is unpretentious, well prepared and delicious. We had a variety of mezze and two different lamb dishes, the shank and the rib, for our main course. We left with warm tummies and warm smiles on our faces. I recommend this restaurant for a laid back rustic evening out. Ask for Anita.
