Review The Fat Cactus - Cape Town Central

Kyla Tee
The food was absolutely fab! Really enjoyed chicken enchilada and the quesadillas with bacon. The taste was exceptional. The salsas were fresh and delicious as well. I tried different things but these two were amazing. The frozen margarita was just okay for me, would have like it more with fresh lime and salt on the rim. The waitresses on duty were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely visit again.

Had a lovely date with myself here. The waitress was really nice and attentive. The food, amazing. Let me not get started on the margarita 😂🫣, best frozen margarita I ever had. Definitely coming back soon.

The food at Fat Cactus is absolutely delicious! The tacos are a must have item on the menu. The staff was super friendly and it's a great place to meet friends over delicious food. I would HIGHLY recommend it!
Lourens Engelbrecht
Quaint place in Mowbray with a pub and grill type atmosphere. Great food, could have ordered double the tacos. Would have liked better seating, the tables are a bit wobbly and they feel like you are light-years apart from your partner. Overall nice place to have good food and drink.
Grazelle Marché Sitzer
Their food is amazing, I enjoyed every bite. The service was poor though, the waiter never checked up on us, we constantly had to call someone for assistance.
Leanne Johnson-Robson
Great food, service and vibe - and reasonably priced. Pulled pork tacos were really good and of course a trip here is not complete without a frozen margarita jug! Heaters outside a nice touch for cold winter nights!
Shaun Fourie
Great place for a beer and wine with my loved one to decompress after a long day Such good vibe and they help with working your tips
Amy Palframan
The ribs were amazingly tender - the perfect consistency of crispy and soft. They come with a small tub of slaw that was also great. The handcut chips are perfect chips. Highly recommend Fat Cactus Mowbray 🌵

I didn’t get a photo of the nachos we had, but the portion felt relatively smaller, but was good nevertheless The pulled pork tacos, with chipotle sauce was a 10/10 🤲🏾 The quesadilla was average, the bacon was a bit burnt and there wasn’t really sauce on it, but this was my first time having it so perhaps it’s how it’s supposed to be. But overall, the service, food and atmosphere was 8/10.
Angelo Graser
Very good Mexican restaurant. Menue is a little bit limited but what they do offer never fails to disappoint. Their starters are on the pricey side but their tacos and nachos are highly recommended including their frozen margarita jugs. Always find myself coming back here.

I haven't been to Fat Cactus in many years. I took the kids to treat them and WOW. I didn't realise I had been missing the Ice Berg beer special so much. The food was exactly as good as I remember and the whole family enjoyed. Friendly staff and tidy restaurant just add to the great experience.
Emily
One of my favourite regular places to go. I enjoy the atmosphere and I have an absolute weakness for their margheritas (both normal and frozen lime) and I also recommend trying the Iceberg, beer mixed with frozen Margherita! If you're looking to eat, the food is great too with generous portions for the tapas.
Jamielu Savoy
Watched the rugby match and had their nachos and jugs. The food is really good as well as the service and drinks . However I just miss the music in the background but overall a good place for celebrations and good food

Visited late afternoon on a Saturday. Had great and fast service with a very helpful waiter who assisted us with our food choices (there are so many good options). I had the ridiculously good Strawberry Daiquiri mocktail and hubby had a Fokof Fokberg (which is a beer topped with lime margarita slush). Starters consisted of to-die-for Amazeballs (deep fried Risotto balls with cheese and chorizo and jalapeño pieces - very mild spice level for those of you who are a bit more sensitive to heat) and hubby had some 🔥 hot 🔥 Jalapeño Poppers (he rated them 4 out of 10 on heat scale, but they were more like a 7 to me!) My main was Coriander and Lime Chicken Enchilada. Very good and generous enough that I took half of it home for later! There was a small mixup with hubby's Nachos so it wasn't as hot as he would have liked but still really good. He'll be spicing up his leftovers at home. This is where our story started out 7 years ago. Was so good to be back. We'll definitely visit more often! Ps. We were too stuffed for dessert - pity! Maybe next time, dear Deep Fried Mars bar 😉

It's definitely my favorite Fat Cactus branch in CPT. We had such a perfect lunch experience. Service was great even though they were busy. Food was out all at the same time even though we were a big table. Thank you guys. We will be back.

Took my boyfriend out for dinner. Had a lovely time. Food was tasty and the portions were perfect. Loved happy hour, definitely worth it. Our waitress was friendly and quick to provide service. Will definitely be back soon

Went to fat cactus in Mowbray and so disappointed. Out of stock of ribs, chicken wings and the wine we wanted. It’s January in Cape Town. It’s season. Surely you have stock and want to impress your customers? Place is completely run down and no one cares.

Honestly- so badly run since the owner died and I would recommend that no one goes here until they have made some serious changes!!

My boyfriend and I went there a few weeks ago and although we enjoy the vibe that the restaurant has to offer- their food was sadly quite awful. I had the nachos and poppers- found a hair in my food... need I say more..My other half had the pulled pork burger which apparently was cold and bland..Hopefully next time we go there the food will be just as good as the vibe...
Sarah Herrington
Great food and very vibey atmosphere, more deserving of a 3.5 than a 3. I got the taco platter with refried beans, which was a huge portion and came with lots of sides which I enjoyed. It was unfortunately a tad under seasoned, but still very tasty. The frozen lime margarita jug we ordered was also delicious. Unfortunately, the service was a bit of a let down. I had ordered a table for 6:30, and upon arriving had to wait ten minutes at the bar as people were still at the table, which was quite a downside for me. Service throughout the night was also just a bit slow, and we were forgotten for large periods of time. I would still come back for the large and tasty portions though, which I believe are very good value for money.

Never disappointed. Always my favourite place to go to when I’m in the neighborhood. I love their hot sauce and burgers. Go with friends and share.

Poor management. I visited Fat Cactus Mowbray with four friends on Friday, 22 February. We had a very bad experience. First, none of the frozen drinks were available as the machines weren't frozen (not sure if they had been turned on too late).

Then, when our food arrived (nachos), we were told that the guacamole had run out (we were not told this before ordering). I then had to pay R108 for a plate of very average nachos with no guacamole. I asked the manager if I could have a discount as I did not think it was fair to pay for a full meal when a large ingredient was missing, but they did not allow this.
Despite all this, our waitress was great and very apologetic.
Avoid this branch, rather go to the one in town, it is much better.
Tommy Van
Used to be a great place, but has become overpriced for the area. Doesn’t care about its locals. Seems to have lost the vibe that made it so popular.
Cathleen Vermaak
Came in waited 40 mins for starters.
Ordered mains right away which we waited more than an hour for. When the food got to the table none of our meals had guacamole (I ordered nachos. Ever tried having nachos without gauc?!?)
Ordered a latte and the waiter brought a cappuccino. When I said I ordered a latte but the cappuccino is fine I was told "We don't have those tall glasses". The coffee beans were also burnt which just added to my frustration.
Really disappointing experience.
Helen
Fat Cactus is never a disappointment; from the staff to the food, to drinks, ambiance! My favorite spot especially because it’s vegan friendly :D

I had been meaning to visit Fat Cactus due to its popularity with varsity students and fortunately, it’s close to UCT, Varsity College and AFDA. Upon arrival, Dacia Dee Hassan welcomed my table of 10 and was, overall, very accommodating. The restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere and maybe this is linked to the daily Happy Hour special that they run from noon until 18:00. Nonetheless, the menu is pocket-friendly and after sampling their margaritas and Nachos Grande with Buffalo Chicken, I can certainly say that their drinks and food menu is great! Given the popularity of the franchise, a reservation is recommended.

I ordered from OderIn - so there wasn’t much restaurant experience, but I must say these nachos were yummy. The restaurant also delivered a good portion of sides. Their guacamole, salsa and mince were enough. I could even finish them. I am definitely trying out this restaurant again.

Friday lunch with colleagues. This is my work hangout spot. Love it here. Good food, awesome frozen margarita jugs.

I had the calamari, amazeballs and poppers starters. Super tasty. The rest of the table ordered wings, quesidillas, burritos, corn fritters and more amazeballs 😀. Really good Mexican food
Dominique Abrahams
I have ordered the 3 Amigos Sliders before but this time I wasn’t really impressed with our take-away. Bread buns wasn’t all toasted. Maybe can package better so that the burgers don’t move around in the box. More care to be noted.
Lou
A nice surprise being from the TEX-MEX capital of the world, TEXAS! Greeted in Spanish, nice surprise; late afternoon seating, took a bit to get service & then drinks & food arrived promptly. Huge portions have vegie fajitas & grande nachos..food was flavorful, hot & generous. Offered suggestion of “chips & salsa” as in the States! Over all fun experience, filling & enjoyed watching the “street” pass by on the patio! Thanks guys!!!

So the first time I went to this Flat cactus I had negative remarks about the service . However, after going again last
week on Friday I have changed my mind. I will start with what is always important to me which is the service which was amazing by the way. Considering how packed the place was someone met us at the door with a smile and after some time we were moved to our table of preference. Our waitress was friendly and she made a lovely recommendation on our choice of tequila shots. I had my favourite meal which is the Happy Hoo and my friend had the BBQ flavored fajitas. Both meals were well done especially the pork in each meal . However the wraps for the fajitas were few I was left wandering more, all in all it was the perfect date night . Social and fun but still cost and intimate .Thomas Mulwa

Pros:
1. Good food
2. Good service

Cons:
1. Hard to get a table on weekends and weekday evenings so book a table in advance
2. Burgers are surprisingly average

Great food and service. we visited on a Thursday afternoon. was very quiet and we received prompt service. Portions were good and food tasty.
Murdoc Nicals
Atmosphere was nice but the service was slow and the food was overpriced for what you get in my opinion. Probably won't be back for we were not really intrigued and mostly just disapointed.
Richard
Another excellent FC! Good everything. Only thing missing is something to make it great!! Oh how I love a well run spot just like this. Good presentation satisfactory although could improve. Good craft beer offering will get me back many times...
Johanna Marie Paderes
Second time here. The place was packed on Saturday. Arrived around 8pm.Service was abit...racist. We were a group of 5, different nationalities. My friend had booked a table but was given one in the smoking section(she doesn’t smoke), she saw there was another booked table inside which was for 6:30 , we were at fat cactus around 8(I’m pretty sure restaurants can only keep your spot for an hour max to accommodate other customers that are already there and want to eat). The waiter tells us we can’t have that spot because that person, Kathy “might still come”. We ordered our food, saw that waiter remove the reserved sign in which Kathy and her group did not come, he could’ve easily accommodated us to have sat at that table for 4, instead another group of white guys, (whom I’m sure none of them were Kathy), got the table.

Overall service was not that great. Food was good enough minus the racism.

Dear Fat Cactus, Mowbray

We have been going to Fat Cactus since 1998 when you opened.

The photograph attached to the review - is not from your restuarant or menu. This is an example of what a corn dog is.

You are charging R70 for for 3 mini mince balls - called a corn dog (deep fried) - on the starters menu - we ordered today - 2017/07/09.

We ate the real deal - corn dogs - at another restuarant in Observatory - also starter - for R65 - 4 corn dogs with chips and dipping sauce - pictures attached.

The new menus - not online yet - we ordered from today - is ridiculously expensive for the portion and quality - and my disappointment is so big that we don't think it is worth spending time or money at your restaurant ever again.

We miss the Fat Cactus that served delicious fairly priced Mexican food until about 3 years ago.
Matshepo Motlanthe
Enjoyed the Hot Chicky burger!!! Will definitely be back for the warm soup specials: Corn soup served with tortilla chips or Chill Bean soup with an optional extra of Chorizo.
The vibe was great and the cosy restaurant definitely helped to forget about the miserable weather outside
Johnny Jol
A southern suburbs institution, famous with students, families and everyone else. Mexican fare is of pretty good quality. A bit tightly packed but there's always a nice warm vibe.
FoodieC
Amazing margaritas!! And their food is really great. You can try a bit of everything actually. The location is good and the service was great!
Robyn Samantha Walker
BEST VIBE, BEST FOOD, BEST SERVICE. I am no stranger to this place and I can guarantee you that their tacos will change your life forever 🌮🌮🌮
LeMarc Gouws
I was super excited when I heard a Mexican place opened in Durbanville (when this place just opened, now there is 2 yay!) and we had to go experience it immediately! I was only sort of impressed.. Sort of, due to the fact that seeing it was the only Mexican option available close to home it was ok, but it lacked flavour and was pricey with some options.. The tacos was tasteless (pork) and the poppers had no burn and was expensive considering what we received.. Honestly, would rather choose to go somewhere else than buy food here, only been here once and was not too impressed.
Andrea Lauren Kraak
Received complimentary tequila shots for my anniversary here 😋 in other news, fat cactus never ever fails me, no matter which one I go to. I am forever inlove with the iceberg and it is the only drink I will have here. The food is just so good. I had the quesadillas this time and it is so amazing ! They do not skimp on the bacon, avo or feta and it is just such a great combo.
Capetown_restaurants
Nachos from @thefatcactus, 'The Big Cheese' consists of tortilla chips, guacamole, salsa and crema and is absolutely delicious and satisfying. Go and enjoy the perfect meal to share or demolish alone. Either way, wash it down with a frozen margarita jug.
Jessy Lipperts
I normally wouldn't come here but my daughter has Dutch class around the corner on friday afternoon so i need to kill a few hours in the area. Asked for a small portion of nachos which turned out to be quite substantial and good quality for very reasonable price. Service was friendly and good.
Jaynisha Patel
The Fat Cactus is always a good time. The atmosphere is lively and the interior makes its cosy. At first it does seem pricy but the portion sizes are massive, which quickly makes up for the pricing. The have a limited number of vegetarian dishes but I generally do find something I enjoy.

Most recently we had a jug which was great. To start we ordered cheesy nachos - yum! And jalapeño poppers - not so yum. For mains we had a quesadilla which I loved. The smokiness from the chipotle was great. The fajitas were served with many sides and was really tasty.

Overall, great atmosphere, great food. We did find the service was a bit slow and the chilli poppers were an absolute fail but this isn't always the case.

Fat Cactus is a must for any foodie. The tacos are my weakness. The chicken and guacomole are perfectly combined with a relish and some grilled chicken for a mouth-watering experience. If you order the tacos ask for corn-bread not soft tacos. Fat Cactus is quite a popular place so for a weekend visit, I'd advise that you call in first. A well-deserved 5 stars.
Ankia Scholtz
Celebrated end of 2nd year with the best selection of drinks and food. The margarita jug was a winner! Enjoyed the chilled atmosphere and great service, and have been back since with the same experience. A great environment for any occasion.
Maxine
We met some friends for dinner before going out for the night and the setting is nice and relaxed. The food was good - we had the bean quesadillas and chicken tacos. It was a good start to our evening.
Nicol Miller
This is the Flagship branch, but definitely not my favourite. I find it difficult to find parking, the outside section to be abit grubby and service to be slightly slow. To drink, we shared the Moggy Rita Jug, which is a blend between lime and strawberry, and you get about 5 glasses out of it. To eat, I would recommend the Food truck Tacos, especially the pulled pork, that comes with chunks of pineapple, which really compliments the dish.

✔good food
✔ value for money
✖ difficult to find parking
✖grubby outside section
✖ slow service
Zinhle Ntuli
This place makes yummy frozen margherita - I highly recommend the frozen strawberry one. I had the BBQ Pulled Pork tacos which I loved, they came with a pineapple salsa that worked well with the pork flavour - I would without a doubt have them again. The service is a little slow but friendly and the vibe is nice and relaxed.
Jana Van Rensburg
My first time here and I really liked it. The vibe is pure Mexican and the look and feel as well.

I had the Pistol Pete quasidilla with bacon, feta and avo. The we also had the Park Road burger with streaky bacon, guacamole and feta as well as the Big Cheese nachos.

Jugs of frozen margaritas and beers were also doing the rounds! The jugs are really strong and is actually a good deal if you like having cocktails.
Claudia Penny
I find myself craving fat cactus waaay too much.

The food here is mostly hit and miss, but I find that if you stick to what you know then you won't be disappointed. I particularly LOVE the amaze balls, the poppers and the burgers. The nachos are super super filling.

The drinks are a little bit on the different side. Get the mixed margarita or an iceberg. Definitely get gingerbread tequila.

The service is friendly and happy and efficient, but they do get really busy.
Matthew Kretzschmar
We tried Fat Cactus in Mowbray for the first time and were very impressed indeed. Naturally we had to sample a margharita to begin with, which was delicious and refreshing. Then we shared some exceptional chilli poppers (which had a fair whack of heat to them!) followed by excellent nachos and a fresh and tasty soft taco dish. Everything was clean, crisp and full-flavoured. Service was excellent and prices were fair. We’ll be back.
Murray Lovemore
Really standard, but good Mexican food. Go for the pulled pork soft shell taco, hard shell gets a bit messy but tastes as great. Also dabble in the chilli poppers and buffalo wings
Danieljake
The Mowbray Fat Cactus branch is definitely my favourite. It's open every day and the staff here are always super friendly.

The last time I came here with some friends we shared the strawberry and mango frozen margarita jug and the Chorizo nachos.

The nachos at Fat Cactus are probably the best in Cape Town. The margarita was nice, just a bit too much on the sweet side.

Definitely worth visiting this outlet if you haven't yet.
Barbara Ann Hall
Authentically Mexican all the way! Casual and relaxed with awesome food from a well packed menu to choose from. Service is quick, staff are friendly and it's just good fun.
Conrad Jonck
There is always a great vibe here. The food is very good with a big varied selection. I've taken a liking to their Nachos and find myself ordering the same every time. It can get a bit loud but we opt to go early evening to avoid the louder crowd.
Chanel Pillay
A little while ago we got a takeaway from this branch after writing a test.

We had the wing basket for starters and I had the quesadillas with Mexican chicken for mains. Both were delicious and packed with flavour.

The service was also good as we had a friendly waiter who was very helpful.
Iman Bawa
Used to frequent this branch when I went to school nearby so decided to pop in again since the last time I've been was 3 years ago. I have to say nothing has really changed same vibe and same good food. Definitely give the nachos a go the are life altering. I don't drink but apparently their frozen margaritas are out of this world. This branch is a little off the beaten track so if you craving fat cactus but don't want to be in the hustle and bustle of things give this branch a go
Azele Anne Naicker
The fat cactus has quite a reputation for serving up some of the best mexican food in Cape Town. I find this branch has great food but needs a bit of sprucing up in terms of its decor. The frozen margarita's are great though. I had the pulled pork quesadillas with a pineapple salsa. It was really tasty and the portion was huge. My partner had the chicken fajita which was flavoured quite well with really tender chicken pieces. All in all, a good effort.
Lisa
Awesome vibe in Fat Cactus, the margaritas were great! Food was not as memorable unfortunately but still good. Definitely need to make a point of going back.
Wilmie Visser
Great night with the girls.
We went to the one on long street, super delicious nachos and strong tequila jars. What more do you want? Always a great vibe with good music.
Ulisha Moodley
Find this Fat Cactus to be rather average. The service is extremely slow and the food just doesn't taste as good as the gardens branch. My nachos were soggy and the rest of the dishes were just average. I also find that this branch is dusty and dingy looking. Would definitely recommend rather going to the gardens branch.
Waseem Dawood
tried the fat cactus the weekend with freinds. the place was cool and had a student vibe. the nachos were good in my opinion as were the chilli poppers. i had a chicken burger, it was huge so i didnt finish it. i would recommend it to students, its filled with a much younger crowd
Tiyaarah Cloete
Tried fat cactus mowbray last night, it was a real vibe. The food, we had the very cheesy nachos which I found boring, the jalapeño poppers which were pretty good. For mains I had the chicken tacos, Waseem had a crumbed chicken burger and our friend KG took anything with bacon. Our food was okay, really big portions. KG also had a sundae which looked delicious. It was a good chilled night but the food wasn't anything to write home about
Natashakrumbock
I am quite a fussy eater and was nervous I wouldn't find anything to eat at the fat cactus but I was pleasantly surprised!! I shared a platter with a group of friends and I loved everything on the platter- cheesy, crunchy, spicy and delicious food!
Definitely recommend for something different!
Gill Gregory
Good food, great atmosphere. Service is a little slow but if you aren't in a rush I would recommend fat cactus in mowbray. Lime margarita was superb
Cary Seach
What a great place! Friendly and vibey like a Mexican should be. The food was tasty and the service was spot on.

The Jalapeño Poppers were amazing, then the enchiladas and burrito were superb. I was also told the burgers are out of this world.

They have a nice selection of Tequila and do some off the wall Marguerita flavours.

Definitely worth a visit, it'll become a do over.
Raeesa Naik
A casual Mexican eatery with a few unique options that present a good variation compared to the usual "taco, quesadilla, Nacho" limitations. Service varies depending on who's serving you, but it's never been completely out of whack whenever I visited. Sometimes you do have to wait quite some time for food; even if the place seems barren.

I enjoy their fajitas compared to fajitas I've tried at other establishments. They give you quite a few different items so you can have fun building up your fajita. The chilli poppers are served with this salsa mayo that can be a little problematic because it's very chunky and difficult to dip into. However, it's not bad. Delicious milkshakes and an entertaining ambience for casual eating fun. The place is very clean and kudos for that! It's Mexican cuisine, after all!

Adrian Ciesielski
A beautiful collection of food, and a vine hat is laid back - a place you can enjoy your food. I went here the other night expecting the old menu, but got something better - a fresh dish of Mexican.

Give it try, especially this venue, it was its first
Harry Sinko
Great authentic food, great unpretentious and casual vibe with really helpful and accommodating staff!!! Just the place to relax, unwind and chill out!
Chante Daries
I really miss this place. The best nachos ever! And the service was top notch. They are perfect for parties as well. Held a party for like 20 people and they catered. Wasn't too pricey either and people loved it.
Thomas Moller
Most of what I saw was actually okay, but there was one factor which basically ruined the whole experience.
There was one waiter who was exceptionally rude. After he introduced himself, we were about to order (as is the norm in every restaurant I've ever been to), but before we could get more than 2 words out, he interrupted us, and insisted we were being rude for not giving our names as well! He then looked at us and waited, and wouldn't take our order till we gave our names...
When I go to a pub/restaurant, it's not to make friends with the staff. I'm paying for a service. I'm a guest, not a friend, and paying to receive treatment like that is something I've never experienced anywhere before.

If the staff is friendly, professional, and pleasant, then I'd probably have given my name anyway. But to call a customer rude, and treat them the way my friend and I were treated is very unprofessional (especially when we hadn't even ordered yet).

In summation, the food and drinks aren't bad, but the service was shocking. In particular, I suggest if you are served by 'Joe' (at least, that's what I was told his name was) I suggest leaving, or requesting a different waiter.
Zandi Mgutshini
I enjoyed the food until I saw a cockroach on the floor. I understand that often it's hard to curb pest problems in urban areas but I can't help but be put off. The service isn't great and the food can take really long to be served but the cocktails are quite interesting. The frozen mangorita is really good.
Tabassum Smiley Aleem
This is my new go to place for nachos. I had the big cheese which was really cheesy. Just the way i like. I felt the chilli poppers were bland. The strawberry juice was nice. Service was abit slow.
Sophie Mamet
This place is just amazing!
Very festive for a Sunday evening!
The staff is very friendly!!
And the food is amazing, the portion are huge and it is very tasty and not too spicy👍🏻
I had the burrito with beef
Khethelo
Went there on a Thursday night, the food was good had the Chicken on Waffles. Only issue is the fact that I had to actively find a waiter to point me to my table even though I had a reservation. Overall a good vibe for a casual date or just to hang out with friends for drinks and food.
Richard Best
This one pips my other favorite Mexican that is near-ish to us because it has a much better atmosphere and a good lively vibe along with a nice airy feel to it. Book a table in advance if possible.

It is a casual restaurant so don't expect classy finishes, but the cantina feel is appropriate and good for a fun dining experience.

The food was pretty good and the portion size was decent as well.
We found the poppers to be okay, not the best but certainly not rubbish. The Nachos and Fajitas were good, and on a hot evening you can enjoy some frozen drinks.

Probably not the most kiddie friendly restaurant though as there isn't anything to keep them amused and if they wonder out the door they are pretty much in the street.
Shez
Personally Mexican food has never been my favorite cuisine because I'm terrible with spicy foods and always have been so scared to try it as I did not want to burn up and not enjoy my meal from an overly spiced dish. However, I went without knowing much about the cuisine or what the best dish was to order. Landed up ordering the cheese, tomato and onion quesadilla. It was delicious and the perfect dish for me! Not too spicy at all and so tasty! My boyfriend ordered the nachos and that was yummy too (although I avoided the jalapeños.) Will definitely be going for Mexican food more often from now!
Charné
Edit: fat cactus has gotten pretty expensive without a huge increase in quality. I like their food but wouldnt go out of my way to eat there.

The family favorite for Mexican food. The fat cactus is always busy and vibey. The food is delicious, especially the quesadillas. The chili poppers are also great. The decor could probably do with an upgrade sometime soon, but no one minds much 😄
Kwangu Mashumba
I've found this place to be a nice place to catch up with a mate and have a good meal. The tacos arn't bad at all and I would suggest trying the Asian Steak Tacos with the soft flour.
There is a good selection of burgers on offer. Of course no meal goes nicely without a nice cold drink, nice tequilas on offer and of course CORONA!!!!🍻
I've always found the atmosphere to be nice, a good place to catch a game.
Rebecca Francis-Pope
Love love LOVE this place! Had never been to this branch, but booked my birthday dinner here based purely on recommendation, and was not disappointed in the least! The staff easily accommodated my group of 20 people, plying us with delicious Icebergs, margaritas, gigerbread tequila and Mexican food that is unrivalled in Cape Town. Really had a great evening and will definitely be back soon. Highly recommended the pulled pork soft tacos!
Sonja Strauss
Loved the Frozen drinks!!! they were definitly the best EVER! happy hour also helped making it more reasonably priced.
Enjoyed the Jalapeño poppers, and will visit again and again to try other menu items.
Great atmosphere great place to meet up for drinks and have a snack.
Catherine
This place has been around for years and is always busy, and its easy to see why - great service, delicious food (I'm a big fan of their fajitas), that so far has never disappointed. They are also well-priced for what you get and have a good drinks selection. One of our regular hang-outs
Amy Imogen Tanzer
The Fat Cactus always serves the most delicious dishes! Despite being inherently greasy, it is a firm favorite when craving Mexican food and some margaritas. With a large menu of starters, nachos, quesadillas, tortillas and tacos etc one is sure to find something that suits your tastebuds

A firm favorite is their tequila margaritas that can be served by the glass or by jug. Do not be fooled by the sweet flavor as these drinks pack a punch and will have you drunk in two minutes.

Decor is geared at a more relaxed and rugged vibe but the atmosphere is always lively - especially during a soccer or rugby match. Be sure to book as it is a favorite location for these events. Service is good and waitresses are helpful and friendly however not always too lively or cheerful.
Teresa Cosentino
No review needed - just check out that steak burger I ordered.....
Amazing food, incredible margaritas, friendly service.... Always a winner
Aqeelah Hassim
Absolutely delicious Mexican food! My favourite meal to have is the Mexican Chicken Quesadilla 🎉 and of course Jalapeño poppers to start! Their frozen Strawberry Margarita is delicious and pretty potent 🍹 the great service and delicious food makes for the best casual dining experience!👌🏽
Mikhil Valjee
Mexican food is always the best go to! Good portions at reasonable prices. I would suggest the veg fajita's for vegetarians and the frozen Margarita's for the drinkers out there. The service and vibe was welcoming. Walked out of Fat Catcus feeling satisfied … and a bit tipsy! A must try!
Chesne Botha
The food is mediocre, the floors were quite filthy and there are quite a few disturbing pictures on the walls. There were very large portions of food. On the up side, the staff are friendly and attentive, don't think I'd be going to the fat cactus anytime soon again
Venetia Paulse
Good food with generous portions. The different flavoured margerita jugs were divine. Will definitely recommend and be back to taste more.

Always have a great time at fat cactus and the food has never disappointed me. Portions are generous and always a great vibe. Margaritas go with everything on the menu :-)

Starter was my all time favourite chilli poppers which were delicious😊then my boyfriend and I shared the ribs and calamari platter for R120 which was monstrously huge and amazing! Thoroughly enjoyed the dinner 😊Alex Crossley

Great atmosphere, Nice and cosy and great food. Took my wife there one night in the week and the place was buzzing with fairly hip and young crowd. Chicken Tacos were were delicious as well as their Jalapeño Chill poppers but i was looking for a bit more heat from the poppers

This place makes my heart & gastric acid warm with the amazing variety of Mexican food. We often came over here to reward ourselves or nurse a hang over from a serious evening. The price is right & if you can't wait for your meal, order a lemonade or tequila jug with as much rum as you can stomach & chug it down merrily. It will be the best thing you could've done for yourself just before the wings, poppers & fajitas arrive. You can rarely just order one thing so go slow and steady on this one, there is no rush.

I used to live two blocks away from Fat Cactus. It is honestly the best Mexican place in Cape Town. Fav thing on the menu is the Tequila jug. The ribs are so spicy and juicy that I always refuse to share them with anybody!
Be sure to check this restuarant out :).

Best Mexican food in Cape Town... That's for sure! Love that atmosphere! Make sure you book a table well in advance as they are very popular! 👌🏼

Had lunch at The Fat Cactus today and I was pleasantly surprised! It doesn't look encouraging from the outside but quaint and vibey on the inside. Service was a little slow, bit of a wait before we got our menus and even longer wait to get our food. However, The food was good and worth the wait. I had the lemon coriander chicken fajitas, and whilst the DIY aspect was messy, it was so good and filling! Was disappointed they don't do a virgin frozen margarita but he strawberry juice I had was a great alternative.

This is one restaurant that comes to my mind everytime I decide to go out for an unwinding evening. Rt from food to ambiance, just one word comes in mind - Chill. Recommended.

Want a good vibe and GREAT food? Fat Cactus is the place you need to go! Chilli poppers and frozen moggy are my ultimate favourite. Fat Cactus is great for any occasion, meeting up with friends, a date or a family dinner or celebrations. Definitely one of my favourite places in Cape Town

By far my favourite restaurant in Cape Town. Not only does this Mexican joint offer delicious nachos, tacos, fajitas and the likes, it also has an array of fun-flavored shooters, cocktails and beers - my favourite being 'the iceberg', a cold beer served with a ball of margarita floating on top. I cannot recommend this restaurant more. Yum yum yum.
Amazing Vibe. Love the Milky Bar tequila, the tapas and nachos. The perfect hang out. Music is vibey, waiters are friendly and food really tasty.

Shout out to The Fat Cactus Mowbray. Epic comfort chow... My frown officially turned upside down! Drinks, food, atmosphere 100's. Awesome night out.

Amazing food, amazing vibe and amazing drinks BUT expect to be served your food at least 1.5hrs after you have arrived! The service needs a serious upgrade!

In theory Fat Cactus ticks all the right boxes - cool vibe, nice enough waiters and Mexican food. But the food lacks authentic Mexican flavour; it's not spicy enough and a little bland. I much preferred the starters and moggyrita jugs to the mains.

Fat Cactus in Mowbray is a serious goodie. I know they’re not newbies and I know that most Capetonians already know who and where they are and have been there at least once in their lifetime. BUT just in case (like us) you might have forgotten about them or don’t go there nearly as often as you would like to – here’s a drool-worthy reason to visit them again soon :)

The Cactus Combo platter - a giant plate of BBQ wings, Nachos, Dips, Chilli Poppers, Quesadilla wedges, Peppadrinos & BBQ Riblets @R216 - its huge, tasty, finger-lickin goodness!

Tequilla, Mexican food and good vibes make Fat Cactus a winner :)

I've visited The Fat Cactus on a few occasions and just love it! Always a fun and pleasant choice.

We usually get some chilli poppers to start of with (of course ;) ) and then my favourite main I've had thus far would have to be the Enchilada. The portions are generous and the food has just that right amount of kick to remind you where you're eating ;) plus the margarita jugs are perfect for sharing :) I would suggest the mango and lime mix.

Service has ranged from good to average...

Just got take aways, and for some reason got charged more than the price on zomanto... Won't be going back again. Can't say much about the food though, cause I am quite annoyed that I got charged extra...

I have been to the Fat Cactus Mowbray 3 times now and I have been extremely impressed each time. The food is absolutely delicious, the helpings generous and menu extensive. The amaze balls and chilli poppers are the perfect starter and highly recommended. I have ordered the burger, nachos and quesadillas before, and each one has been fantastic. The iceberg- a draught with a large scoop of frozen margarita on the top is a must have

The food is really average some meals I haven't even wanted to finsh cause it's not good and defiantly not the best margeritas I've had. Service has been from bad to average defiantly haven't ever returned at my own will

Great spot with quirky decor. Wonderful frozen margarita's - try the strawberry and lime combo. Delicious food with a nice hot kick. Dessert portions are huge, so it is best to share. An overall great place to have a night out with friends. The only down side is to find a parking spot near by.

We started lunch with a couple of moggy ritas (a frozen lime and strawberry margarita mix) and an iceberg or two (a draft with a cap of frozen margarita). SO GOOD! And then the food started arriving. We ordered the Amazeballs, which are deep fried chunks of chorizo risotto and their name absolutely describes what they are - followed by chicken chilli nachos and the Pistol Pete quesadillas. Everything was freshly prepared, completely delicious and easily shared by three. Our waitress was lovely and the vibe is chilled... I would recommend the Fat Cactus to anyone.

This place is great! Good prices and huge portions. Definitely get the bang for your buck. Nachos are outstanding. Pulled pork tacos are out-of-this-world! Indoor and outdoor seating. It isn't in the prime location, but not by any means a dangerous area. Lots of street parking. They also seem to have a regular parking guard. If you aren't in the area, make yourself in the area. Oh and the other locations aren't as good. (Keep that in mind when decided on where to eat) =)

Lovely for a rowdy party. Food is tasty, and they serve big portions, which is great for sharing. Friendly staff. We've held most of the Cape Town Rollergirls get-togethers there and we always have a good time. My favourites are the wing baskets, the spinach and feta quesadillas, and it's hard to say no to the risotto Amaze balls.
